JCSC Foundation News The Johnson City Senior Center Foundation is registered with Kroger and is supported through your Kroger purchases. Many of you registered the Foundation as your charitable organization on your Kroger account. However, we recently were notified that the designation must be renewed annually on each individual account, or the Foundation will not receive credit for your purchases! Please visit the Kroger website, log into your account, click on the Community tab, and select Kroger Community Rewards. If you previously designated the Foundation, click on the Reenroll Now tab, and then Edit under Community Rewards. Under Find your Organization, type in the organization number 82707, select the Johnson City Senior Center Foundation,

and click on Enroll. It’s that simple to help the Foundation! If you have not previously supported the Foundation with your Kroger account, would you please consider doing so? Kroger’s last quarter donation to the Foundation, thanks to the support of our participants, was over $500; please take a moment to renew or begin your support so the donations keep coming. Mark your calendars for Tuesday, November 1. This will be the fundraising day at Bob Evans; a portion of your meal purchase will be donated to the Foundation, and will be designated for the Christmas Box project. The Foundation is currently seeking other sponsorships for the Christmas Box project; if you would like more information, please let us know!

Not all nursing homes are the same. Here at Lakebridge Health Care, we care for each resident with a personal touch, and that makes all the difference. You can relax knowing your loved one is in good hands with us.

Golfing is often thought of as a passive sport that does not require any real degree of fitness. In reality, golf incorporates cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and even balance and coordination. With all of these benefits, it’s hard to say no to a game of golf. 1. Walking - One of the best parts of golf, from a fitness standpoint, is the high amount of cardiovascular activity that is involved in the sport. Think about it--most golf courses are spread over multiple acres of hilly ground. Therefore, walking across a golf course is a great way to improve your cardiovascular system. 2. Strength Training - Swinging a golf club, in and of itself, is not very difficult from a strength training point of view. However, as discussed above, golf courses typically have lots of hills and valleys. Walking up these hills is sure to work the quadriceps and hamstrings, which help to make up the muscles of the lower body. In addition, lifting your golf bag from the car to the course, and carrying it around the course with you all day, is a great way to get your upper body strength training in for the week. 3. Balance - One of the best types of exercise that you can get from golfing is an increase in your ability to balance your body. A high degree of balance is not only difficult to achieve, but is very important for a number of reasons. First, individuals who exhibit a great sense of balance often have a very strong core. Your core includes the abdominal muscles, as well as the muscles of the lower back and even the buttocks. These muscles work together to help prevent back pain, falls and a number of other dangerous occurrences. Whenever you get a chance to work on improving your balance, you should take it. 4. Concentration - Golf is a great way to exercise your body. However, as recent research has found, this is not the only type of exercise that your body needs. Exercising your brain is also very important not only for long life, but also for the prevention of brain degradation, which can result in memory loss. Golfing forces you to remember numbers, images, and even specific tips and techniques. Therefore, it is a great all-around way to exercise both body and mind.

Meet the Staff Patty Altman

Community Health Activities Coordinator

Patty Altman grew up in Johnson City playing in Powell Square and swimming at Legion Pool with her best friend. She knew very early on in life that she would be a nurse. She calls herself “a caretaker at heart”. “My first patient was a dog and I was 12 years old. Poochie, a big redbone hound lost a tooth and was bleeding. I was worried that he would bleed to death, so I tried to make the dog to gargle salt water to stop the bleeding. You just cannot get a dog to gargle. The dog lived and a nurse was born!” Patty and her husband Jerry moved to the country in 1972 where they raised 3 sons. The family continued to grow, now with 5 grandchildren, 3 step granddaughters and a great grandson. “After my husband passed away in 2013, I found myself lost. I had already retired from the Johnson City Medical Center after 30 years of bedside nursing but still felt the need to help others. This job has been an answer to prayer. My work here includes scheduling health programming, teaching classes, doing blood pressures, blood sugars and listening to people. There are wonderful, active seniors who inspire me with their life stories. The people here are so precious. I love the outdoors and spend time gardening, hiking, biking, playing with my grandchildren and my two puppies who keep me on my toes!” As you can see, the Johnson City Senior Center is very lucky to have such a compassionate “caregiver” on our team!
