JCSC Foundation News Can you believe it, summer is over and Christmas is just around the corner? At least, the Johnson City Senior Center Foundation Board is gearing up for Christmas and their next fundraising event; The Christmas Box program which helps low income seniors.

Their goal for this year is 250 boxes containing perishable/nonperishable food, staples, paper goods, laundry items, and personal hygiene products.

There are many ways you can help with this project; find a sponsor, sponsor a box, make a donation, volunteer your time to assemble and wrap boxes, volunteer to pack the boxes, or volunteer to deliver boxes to the senior recipients.

The cost to fill a box is $60. Please help us to help a senior have a Merry Christmas. Boxes will be delivered on December 19th. For more information, please see staff.

Please call 434-5723, 48 hours in advance to reserve a meal or if you need to cancel a meal that you have already signed up for. Sign up sheets are also available outside of the dining room.

October 24 – Dr. Chidinma Onweni Blood Sugar Monitoring Basics October 31 – Dr. Joseph Kattakayam Diabetic Foot Care Cancer Awareness for September September is cancer awareness month for several cancers: Blood Cancer; Ovarian Cancer; and Prostate Cancer. Being knowledgeable can sometimes be one of our best defenses in recognizing potential health issues. With that said here is some basic information about these cancers: Blood Cancers: Leukemia – a type of cancer found in your blood and bone marrow caused by rapid production of abnormal white blood cells; Lymphoma – a type of blood cancer that affects the lymphatic system which removes excess fluids from your body and produces immune cells; and myeloma – cancer of the plasma cells. Plasma cells are white blood cells that produce disease and infection fighting antibodies in your body.

Ovarian Cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the ovaries. Early stage ovarian cancer rarely causes any symptoms but some signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer may include: abdominal bloating or swelling; quickly feeling full when eating; weight loss; discomfort in the pelvis area; changes in bowel habits, such as constipation; and a frequent need to urinate.

Prostate Cancer is most common cancer in men in the United States after skin cancer. Prostate cancer often has no early symptoms. Advanced prostate cancer can cause men to urinate more often or have a weaker flow of urine.

Talk to your doctor regarding any screening tests and any concerns you have regarding any of these cancers.

JCSC Seniors on the Go will meet on Thursday, September 14 at 3:00 pm. We invite you to come make new travel friends and enjoy a social time. This is also the place where you’ll be among the first to hear about upcoming outings and overnight trips.

There Washington DC trip in October is going to be a fabulous tour of our Nation’s Capital. For only $644 pp/do, you’ll enjoy 4 nights lodging, 8 meals, two guided DC tours, including an evening tour; admission to Mount Vernon, and Arlington National Cemetery.

The first series of classes known as “Absolute Beginner Line Dance Class” will meet once a week for 5 weeks. The Absolute beginner class is recommended for anyone who has never line danced before – The class starts with the very basic steps, learning the terminology and sequence of steps. This class will teach the participants how to count steps, do basic steps such as a grape-vine, scuff, toe-strut, and putting those steps together to make line dances. This class will be followed by second series of classes, “Beginner Line Dance” and it will take the participants to the next level of line dance steps.

Classical Creations Instructor: Ed Puhr Cost: $15 for the series Thursday September 14, 21, 28 10:00am – 1:00pm Oil painters, has it crossed your creative minds how the

Renaissance painters made a beautiful painting of their pets.

If you have an explorative spirit, come and learn the basics of how classical painters did it. The course is meant for the intermediate and upper levels of oil painters who are familiar with the basics, such as color, mixing, mediums and the general dynamics of sketching. Bring your supplies - oil paints, brushes, mediums, and an easel. Come prepared with a willing spirit to explore the wonderful techniques of painters such as Rembrandt, Caravaggio, or whoever your favorite Renaissance painter is. Interact with other lovers of oil painting and be the painter you are meant to be. The class is 3 hours long, please be prompt! Bring an 18” x 24” canvas, some gesso to initially apply, a piece of fine sandpaper, sketching paper and soft charcoal sticks to practice drawing your favorite pet with a ‘chiaroscuro’ effect.

After learning to use the loom you can expect to create your own designs. There will also be a project which requires learning another stitch. Brain-a-Cise Thursdays, 4:00p • Cost: Free Your brain needs exercise just as much as your body.

Come join this group for different brain stimulating activities.

Keep It Moving A supervised exercise program for individuals who have finished Cardiac Rehab, Physical Therapy or been told by your physician that you need to exercise but don’t know how. This program serves as the next step in your progression in establishing a safe, independent exercise program. This program requires a referral from a medical professional. This is an ideal program for the individual who is facing total joint replacement both before surgery and after finishing post-surgical physical therapy. New Turtle Challenge!

Become a Turtle Team Traveler- gather up some friends and form a team as we journey through magnificent Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Tetons. Our route takes us to Old Faithful, Mammoth Hot Springs, the historic Roosevelt Lodge, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Yellowstone Lake and through the Grand Tetons to Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

The route is 230 miles! The Turtle Traveler challenge begins September 12 and ends November 7 with a chuck-wagon style celebration! Team members will add together their miles each week and report a team total. Each week will feature a fun fact about Yellowstone. Need members for your team- we’ll help you! Cost is $8 per participant.

4 Reasons Why Golfing is More Exercise than You Think 1. Walking One of the best parts of golf, from a fitness standpoint, is the high amount of cardiovascular activity that is involved in the sport. Think about it--most golf courses are spread over multiple acres of hilly ground. Therefore, walking across a golf course is a great way to improve your cardiovascular system. Cardiovascular exercise is thought of as biking, swimming or jogging. However, when you walk (and not ride in a golf cart) during your golf game, you are sure to get the same kinds of cardiovascular benefits.

2. Strength Training Another reason why golfing consists of more exercise than you think, is because of the high amounts of strength training that goes on during the game. Swinging a golf club, in and of itself, is not very difficult from a strength training point of view. However, as discussed above, golf courses typically have lots of hills and valleys. Walking up these hills is sure to work the quadriceps and hamstrings, which help to make up the muscles of the lower body. In addition, lifting your golf bag from the car to the course, and carrying it around the course with you all day, is a great way to get your upper body strength training in for the week.

3. Balance One of the best types of exercise that you can get from golfing is an increase in your ability to balance your body.

A high degree of balance is not only difficult to achieve, but is very important for a number of reasons. First, individuals who exhibit a great sense of balance often have a very strong core. Your core includes the abdominal muscles, as well as the muscles of the lower back and even the buttocks. These muscles work together to help prevent back pain, falls and a number of other dangerous occurrences. Whenever you get a chance to work on improving your balance, you should take it.

4. Concentration Golf is a great way to exercise your body. However, as recent research has found, this is not the only type of exercise that your body needs. Exercising your brain is also very important not only for long life, but also for the prevention of brain degradation, which can result in memory loss. Golfing forces you to remember numbers, images, and even specific tips and techniques. Therefore, it is a great all-around way to exercise both body and mind.

Dominion Senior Living of Johnson City Our monthly scenic drive is always a huge hit for residents, but this month it became the talk of the town. David, our Maintenance Director, volunteered his time to take the residents to his neck of the woods, Watauga Lake. The residents enjoyed the breathtaking scene, as they shared stories of their remembrance of the original town of Butler, Tennessee.

Since David is familiar with the lake he was able to act as our tour guide, explaining the history and area around Watauga Lake. We are so lucky to have a team member that enjoys spending time and making moments with the residents, and doesn’t mind putting his work to the side in order to do so!
