Turtles Rule ... Did you ever want to try a triathlon? Well, Senior Services came up with a very innovative approach to triathlons. They called it Turtle Triathlon. Best of all, it didn’t have to be done in one day. The goal was simple, participants completed each section, run, bike, swim, of an Olympic style triathlon from January 9 through March 6, which consisted of 6.2 mile run, 24.8 mile bike, and a .93 mile swim. Each participant posted his or her accomplishments in a log book provided by the staff when registering for the event. The fees for the fitness room and open lap swim were waived during the 8-week period. Participants then completed the weekly training logs in no particular order and submitted their results to staff on a weekly basis. At the close of the event, participants celebrated their successes and were given an event t-shirt and medal. The event was a huge success with 60 seniors enrolling in the program. The Turtle Triathlon offered athletes an opportunity to compete at any skill level and at their own pace. “Hats are off “ to the staff who provided yet another effective way to promote an Active Life Through Active Living.
