Get Your Play On! During Park and Recreation Month, the National Recreation and Park Association challenged local parks and recreation department’s to get their play on.

On July 15, Memorial Park Community Center hosted the department’s park and recreation month celebration. Staff members from athletics, administration, seniors, and recreation services put their heads together and created an event to capture the essence of play.

‘Get Your Play On Saturday in the Park’ featured an evening of outdoor oldfashioned games, inflatable fun, hiking at Jacob’s Park, basketball contests, a watermelon eating contest, balloon artist, chalk fun, water games, s’mores, entertainment, food, and an outdoor movie with free popcorn. The fun was endless!

Administration Highlights ~ 

Pavilion rentals for Rotary Park show a significant increase over last year’s rentals since the edition of the splash pad and new playground. Rentals were 25 this time last year compared to 97 in 2017.



Restroom plans for Rotary Park are being reviewed.



The advertisement for an Assistant Parks Director closed on July 21.

Athletics Division Highlights ~ 

The summer tennis program concluded this month with 65 participants.



The spring adult softball ended with 67 teams this year.



Youth fall soccer registration will end on July 23.



Girls Fall T-ball, Machine Pitch, and Fast Pitch Softball registration is underway.

Park Services Division Highlights ~ 

Washington County inmates cleared all the overgrown embankments at Winged Deer Park bringing them to a manageable state. Park Services followed up with slope mowing and weeding.



Additional signage was installed at Jacob’s Nature Park at Sinking Creek.



Prepared fields for the July 4 fireworks celebration at Freedom Hall.



Aerified athletic fields at Civitan Park.



Sanded and applied stain to picnic tables at Buffalo Mountain Park.



Assembled and installed picnic table umbrellas at Rotary Park’s Splash Pad.



Conducted irrigation repairs at Winged Deer Park and Civitan Park.

Recreation Services Division ~ 

Camps are in full swing at all recreation services locations. The photos certainly portray loads of happy campers enjoying a wide array of fun, learning, and outdoor activities. Great job by all the counselors in making this a memorable experience for all the kids!



Memorial Park Community Center had 80 participants in the Jump Start JC camp. The two teen camps were also popular choices this year with Volunteer Camp bringing in a full camp of 30 and Adventure Quest 19. Basketball camp had 30 enrolled.



Princeton Arts Center held two camps during the month of July, Under the Paint Brush and Arts in Parks. Both camps were full with 20 participants each.



Carver’s Camp had 78 enrolled in the 7-week program.



Nature Explorers Camp had 22 participants who enjoyed a variety of outdoor experiences during camp from shelter building to water rafting.

Congratulations Sam Miller for landing in this month’s Kudos Corner! Sam has taken on many hats this month with the summer camp program, Aquatics new hire, recreation services programming, overseen installation of a new playground at Carver Park, and is coordinating work being completed at Freedom Hall Pool. Great job Sam!
