Tools to Try Feel free to experiment with different techniques and tools. Color pencils are a popular choice with coloring books because they allow the artist to blend and create shading. Felt tip markers provide a wonderful depth of color. Fine-tip gel markers can be used to add detailed lines to the existing illustrations. You can even lightly paint some of the images with a watercolor or acrylic paint, but be sure not to get the paper too wet or it will bleed and buckle. Combining and mixing media can achieve great effects. Try using a light colored marker and overlap with another color in pencil to add depth and shade.
Coloring Tips Experiment on a piece of scrap paper to help develop a techique you like. Add depth and dimension to your design with shading. You can do this by darkening corners and edges. If using color pencils, keep them sharp, especially when working inside small shapes or when shading. When choosing colors, try not to be boxed in by reality. Just because leaves are usually green in real life does not mean that they must be colored that color. Choose colors that make you happy in the moment. Using contrasting colors, such as orange and purple or blue and yellow, next to each other can create a lively and fun effect. Leaving some spaces white or adding black will provide interesting contrast.
