2008 Season Preview Pieces are in Place for a Return to Success for the Jayhawks in 2008
Coming off of a 2006-07 season in which things simply couldn’t
go right for the University of Kansas, conventional wisdom would indicate that the program’s 2008 spring campaign might be in line for more of the same. Take a closer look at this year’s team, however, and any possible notion of a repeat of last season is quickly extinguished. All of the ingredients that make up a successful tennis team are in place for KU. Talent, experience, depth -- you name it, the Jayhawks have got it. Perhaps the biggest difference this year from a season ago is KU’s experienced senior class, a luxury that simply did not exist in 200607. Leading the group is Elizaveta Avdeeva, one of the program’s top players in recent history. Her accomplishments speak for themselves. The Obninsk, Russia native is a two-time All-Big 12 selection in both singles and doubles. Avdeeva has been at or near the top of Kansas’ lineup since arriving in Lawrence and will enter the season within striking distance of some impressive career milestones. With one more Big 12 doubles win, she will enter KU’s all-time top-five in the category, and five victories will make her the all-time leader.
a win in the No. 6 singles position. Smith also joined Hommell on the Academic All-Big 12 team following the 2006-07 season, her second time receiving the honor in as many years. The Jayhawk’s junior class, which is arguably their most talented, will again be looked upon to produce for the Jayhawks in 2008. The class is led by Horvath, who joined Avdeeva on last year’s AllBig 12 doubles team. The Budapest, Hungary native is also a skilled singles player, finishing second on the team with 18 victories a year ago -- a number which was topped by KU’s other standout junior, Yuliana Svistun. No member of Kansas’ roster has improved more in her time at KU than has Svistun, a Ufa, Russia native. After competing sparingly her freshman year, Svistun has blossomed into a star, picking up an impressive 25 wins last season in singles action. She then showed no signs of slowing down this fall, recording a team-high 10 wins, which included a singles title at the Hoosier Classic. Horvath and Svistun will be staples in the Jayhawk lineup this season, and while their past accomplishments are surely impressive, the potential exists for the two juniors to take their performances to even higher levels in 2008.
Avdeeva will again join junior Edina Horvath to form one of the nation’s top doubles tandems. The duo, which was ranked No. 36 in the ITA preseason poll, finished second in the No. 1 position in the Big 12 and was given all-conference honors following a season in which they went 23-9. The pair enters 2008 with high expectations -- expectations that are well deserved. Another member of Kansas’ deep senior class is Roswell, Ga., native Lauren Hommell. Despite struggling though injuries last spring and again this fall, the fiery lefty has been a constant in KU’s lineup throughout her career. Not only does she bring consistent play, she brings an intensity to her matches that other players feed off. If healthy, Hommell will be a key factor in her squad’s performance this season. Rounding out the senior class is Stephanie Smith, a home-grown product from Salina, Kan. Smith, who also struggled with injuries last season and again during the fall, has been a significant influence on her team both on and off the court. In her first match of the 2006-07 season, she clinched Kansas’ victory over Utah with 8
Jayhawk
Elizaveta Avdeeva and Edina Horvath will look to build upon a 2006-07 season in which they were named All-Big 12.
While the Jayhawks’ sophomore class may only include one athlete, the impact that Sopron, Hungary, native Kunigunda Dorn has on her team is anything but small. Dorn stepped right into Kansas’ lineup as a freshman last season, playing in various positions, including at No. 1 singles on occasion. She also won a singles title at the Hoosier Classic during the fall of 2006. Tennis

2008 Season Preview While Dorn’s first year at KU was certainly a success, the consensus throughout the program is that 2008 will be an even better year for the talented sophomore. Finally, as far as numbers go, no group of players on KU’s roster is as deep as this season’s freshmen class, which features five studentathletes. The group is led by Maria Martinez and Mymee Tokuda, who proved during the fall that they have the ability to not only contribute to this year’s team, but to drastically improve its chances of success as well.
Once again, the Jayhawks will face one of the nation’s most daunting schedules. Seven teams appearing on 2008’s slate -- Tulsa, Kentucky, BYU, Baylor, Texas and Texas A&M -- were NCAA Tournament squads a year ago. Many of KU’s 2008 opponents were also ranked in last year’s final ITA National Poll. Joining the seven NCAA Tournament teams in the rankings were Arkansas, New Mexico, Iowa and Oklahoma State.
Martinez, an Abingdon, Md., native, was a standout at Elkton Christian Academy in both tennis and academics. During her career, she achieved a Mid-Atlantic ranking of No. 2 and competed in two USTA Fed Cup tournaments. She also graduated with a 3.6 GPA and an award in speech. Tokuda also put up big numbers at Chienkan High in Saga, Japan. As a sophomore, she won the Saga Prefecture National High School Championship, an event which she competed in as a freshman as well. Tokuda was also ranked third in singles in the Saga Prefecture U-18 division. Another member of KU’s freshmen class, Fredericksburg, Texas native Richelle Mechem, brings not only an impressive collection of accomplishments to the team, but strong tennis ties as well. The Fredericksburg High graduate teamed with her sister, Lindsay, to win the 4A state doubles championships and played in 18 junior tournaments. Her older sister, Nikki, played at Texas A&M, and her father, Richard, is a former coach of Kansas’ men’s team. Kate Goff, out of Scottsdale, Ariz., is the fourth student-athlete in KU’s freshman class. Goff was a standout both on and off the court at Saquaro High, where she was a regional champion as a junior and runner-up as a senior. Goff was also a member of the school’s state runner-up volleyball team and was selected to the National Honor Society and National Honor Roll. The Jayhawks’ freshman corps is rounded out by Emily Gorham, a late addition to the team. Gorham, a Boerne, Texas, native, was the first player in state history to advance to state in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles during her career. She was a San Antonio AllArea Athlete selection and was also a member of the National Honor Society. Kansas’ expectations are very high for its incoming freshman class, and given each of its members’ success at the high school and junior level, there is no reason to believe that it will not live up to its billing. Jayhawk
The Big 12 Conference, as it is year-in and year-out, will be one of the country’s top leagues, headlined by 2007 conference champ Stephanie Smith is one of three seniors who will provide the Baylor. This season’s Big 12 Championships, which were hosted by Jayhawks with veteran leadership in 2008. KU last year, will be held in College Station, Texas, on the campus of Texas A&M. In short, optimism is high for the Jayhawks. Everything that a winning team needs is present, which should make the 2008 season one to remember at the University of Kansas.

2007 Fall Recap Following
the end of it’s 2006-07 spring season, the University of Kansas set a goal of using its fall campaign to reinstate a winning mind-set within the program. Given the Jayhawks’ success at five of the nation’s top fall tournaments, it’s safe to say that the desired atmosphere is back. KU opened its schedule at the Cissie Leary Tournament in Philadelphia, where it’s doubles tandem of senior Elizaveta Avdeeva and junior Edina Horvath, ranked No. 36 in the ITA preseason poll, earned a second-place finish in the main draw. Horvath also had a strong showing in singles play, advancing to the tournament’s quarterfinals. Junior Yuliana Svistun, who was arguably Kansas’ most impressive performer throughout the fall, also got her season off to a fast start, winning three round-robin singles contests at the event. Following their solid showing at the Cissie Leary Tournament, Avdeeva and Horvath were selected to compete at the ITA AllAmerican Championships at UCLA as one of only 24 doubles teams to earn an at-large bid into the qualifying draw. However, the tandem, which was All-Big 12 in 2006-07, fell in the first round of the event. Avdeeva also earned a spot in the pre-qualifying singles bracket but did not advance. KU’s second full-team event of the fall was the Hoosier Classic in Bloomington, Ind. Highlighting the event for Kansas was Svistun, who won the championships of the Flight E singles bracket. The win gave the Ufa, Russia, native her third career tournament title. In other action, freshmen Mymee Tokuda and Maria Martinez each notched their first collegiate singles wins. Next up for the Jayhawks was the ITA Central Region Championships in Tulsa, Okla., where Avdeeva and Horvath were looking to win their second-straight doubles title at the event. The duo fell short, though, as they were eliminated in the quarterfinals. KU did enjoy some 10
success in singles play, however, as Svistun won two qualifying matches to earn a spot in the main draw and give her a team-best seven-match winning streak. Avdeeva also advanced to the round of 32. Rounding out the Jayhawks’ fall slate was the Florida State Seminole Invitational. KU produced yet another solid showing, as its doubles tandem of Svistun and sophomore Kunigunda Dorn earned a runner-up finish in the Gold bracket. Svistun also excelled in singles play, taking third in the Black draw. Horvath had a strong weekend as well, placing fifth in the Gold singles draw.
Avdeeva and Horvath were again Kansas’ top doubles duo, finishing the fall with a team-high five victories. Dorn and Svistun tallied three doubles wins, and Martinez and Dorn won two matches playing together. As a whole, KU’s fall season produced its share of highlights, but more importantly, was indicative of the improvements made throughout the program. With that in mind, there is no reason to believe that the improvements won’t continue, setting the stage for a return to success by the Jayhawks.

Hall-Holt, a member of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and the United States Tennis Association, earned a master’s degree in physical education with an emphasis in sports administration from Eastern Kentucky in 1996. On July 10, 2004, Hall-Holt was married in Kentucky to her husband, Rance Holt, and the two currently reside in Lawrence.
Under Hall-Holt’s guidance, KU has garnered numerous accomplishments, both on and off the courts. During her tenure, Hall-Holt has seen her players receive All-Big 12 recognition five times, which includes current Jayhawks Elizaveta Avdeeva and Edina Horvath. Hall-Holt’s players also excel in the classroom. In 2005, the tennis squad set an all-time Kansas Athletics record by posting a 3.49 GPA. Under Hall-Holt’s leadership, KU has placed nine athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 team. Current players Avdeeva, senior Lauren Hommell and senior Stephanie Smith have all been named to the team under Hall-Holt. In 2006, Kansas spent the majority of the season ranked in the ITA national poll, and numerous individuals have been ranked throughout Hall-Holt’s time at KU as well, including Avdeeva and

highest team GPA, and he was also named to the Dean’s List.
Dalmagro’s tennis coaching experience stretches far beyond his days at WFU. He served as the head coach at the Nike Tennis Camp in Lawrenceville, N.J., in 2004 and 2005, and was also a coach at Abraham Baldwin College in Tifton, Ga., from 2002 to 2003.
German Dalmagro begins his second year as assistant coach of the Kansas tennis program. Despite being at KU for just a year, Dalmagro’s impact on the program is noticable. The Jayhawks placed two members of last season’s squad on the All-Big 12 team, and Dalmagro also helped Kansas land an impressive recruiting class for 2007-08 that includes five newcomers. Dalmagro came to Kansas following a very successful playing and coaching career at the University of West Florida. Prior to accepting the KU job, Dalmagro had been an assistant coach of both the men’s and women’s teams at UWF since the fall of 2005. During his year with West Florida, both teams reached the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. While Dalmagro’s coaching career at West Florida may have been brief, his impact as one of the most decorated tennis players in school history was definitely not. He was a member of UWF’s back-to-back NCAA Division II National Championship teams in 2004 and 2005, and was part of the 2005 Gulf South
National Champion in 2002.
Dalmagro graduated from West Florida, earning a degree in business administration with a specialization in management.
Dalmagaro also put together a fine individual career, at UWF and ABAC Junior College, highlighted by All-America honors in 2004 (doubles), 2003 (singles and doubles) and 2002 (singles and doubles). He was also ranked nationally as high as No. 3 in doubles and No. 11 in singles throughout his career. At West Florida, Dalmagro excelled in academics as well. He and his teammates won the 2004 National Award for Jayhawk

2007 Recap Young Jayhawk Squad Shows Promise, Resolve During Trying Season
Look no further than the University of Kansas’ heartbreaking loss
to Oklahoma in the first round of the Big 12 Championships to understand what epitomized its 2007 spring season -- the Jayhawks are almost there. Comprised of a roster that featured no seniors and a collection of student-athletes that battled injuries and adversity all year, KU tennis set the foundation for what appears to be a bright future for the program. On the heels of an outstanding fall in which several of its players accomplished impressive feats at four of the nation’s top preseason tournaments, highlighted by Elizaveta Avdeeva and Edina Horvath’s championship performance at the ITA Central Regional doubles tournament, Kansas entered the spring ranked 59th in the country and with excitement at its peak.
What followed the win over Drake, however, would prove to be a major factor throughout the remainder of KU’s season. Not only did the squad drop to 1-3 after a setback at the hands of No. 20 Texas, the Jayhawks, who were already playing minus the injured Stephanie Smith, were dealt a devastating blow when they learned Ksenia Bukina, an All-Big 12 singles and doubles performer from 2006, would miss the remainder of the year due to injury. The loss of Bukina presented several KU players with the task of moving up a spot in the singles lineup, including several to positions they had never competed in. The Jayhawks struggled to make the transition, losing their next four duals against Syracuse, Wake Forest, Arkansas and BYU to fall to 1-7. Although the team had hit a rough stretch, Avdeeva and Horvath were storming through doubles competition, as the duo put together a streak of six wins in its first eight matches. Next up for Kansas was a date with non-conference foe Utah in Lawrence which turned in to arguably the highlight of the season for the Jayhawks. With the dual score knotted at three and only the No. 6 match to be decided, Smith, playing for the first time all spring, outlasted the Utes’ Jessica Carter in a thrilling three-set contest, sending her squad to a 4-3 victory. The dual also featured Avdeeva and Horvath’s seventh win of the young season in the No. 1 doubles slot, as well as a victory from the No. 3 duo of Svistun and Lauren Hommell. Following a setback at No. 41 Oklahoma State, the Jayhawks won back-to-back outings and appeared to be steering the season in the right direction. First was a convincing 6-1 victory over Iowa State in Ames on March 3. KU had singles wins from Avdeeva, Dorn, Svistun, Smith and Horvath, who recorded the first of what was eventually a season-high streak of four consecutive victories. The Jayhawks also swept all three doubles matchups.
Yuliana Svistun led KU with 25 singles wins in 2006-07.
After dropping their first two contests to Tulsa and No. 43 Indiana, the Jayhawks picked up their first win of the season, 5-1, over Drake on Jan. 21. KU got singles wins from Avdeeva, Horvath, junior Yuliana Svistun and freshman Kunigunda Dorn, who started off her collegiate career by winning two of her first three singles matches. The ‘Hawks also dominated doubles play, getting wins from all three of its tandems, including Avdeeva and Horvath’s third-straight in the No. 1 position.

That momentum then carried into Kansas’ March 10 meeting with Nebraska, in which the Jayhawks dominated the Huskers, 5-2. The win, which evened the ‘Hawks conference record at 2-2, featured the fourth-straight win from Avdeeva and Horvath in the No. 1 doubles position, as well as the seventh-consecutive victory from Svistun in the No. 5 singles position, the longest unbeaten streak by any KU player all season. Also taking singles matches for KU were Dorn, Horvath and Smith. After a 5-2 defeat at the hands of Louisville on March 11, four of the Jayhawks’ players headed off to Phoenix, Ariz., for a round-robin spring break tournament. The weekend was a huge success for KU, as Avdeeva, Dorn and Svistun each won their singles contests, as did Horvath, whose win over Murray

2007 Recap State’s Angela McGahee was the Budapest, Hungary, native’s fourth in a row. With the much needed rest from spring break, the Jayhawks began the stretch run of their schedule with seven-consecutive conference duals to close out the season. First up was a date with 16th-ranked and defending Big 12 Champion Baylor in Waco. Despite the fact that KU dropped the contest to the Bears, Avdeeva and Horvath notched their most significant win of the season as they defeated BU’s top tandem of Zuzana Cerna and Zuzana Chmerlarova, 8-6, improving the duo’s mark to 12-3. Kansas then hit its roughest stretch of the season, dropping its next four contests to No. 69 Texas Tech, Missouri, Kansas State, and No. 30 Colorado. However, Svistun continued to establish herself as one of the league’s top singles players in the No. 5 position, as she tallied victories in all four outings to improve her record to 13-5 during the spring, including a 7-2 Big 12 mark. Horvath also recorded two singles wins during that sequence of matches.
themselves on the verge of advancing to the quarterfinals. Kansas would not got gently, though, as Smith won a three-set match in the No. 6 slot to knot the dual at three with only the No. 1 matchup remaining between Avdeeva and OU’s Gabby Baker. The Obninsk, Russia, native, fought hard, but could not overcome the powerful Baker, who took the match, 7-5, 7-6 (3), ending KU’s season. Following the bitter conclusion to its spring, Kansas was recognized by the Big 12 Conference for the performance of its players both on the court and in the classroom. Smith was named first team Academic All-Big 12, while Hommell was selected to the second team. Smith, a Salina, Kan., native, was second-team Academic All-Big 12 in 2006 as well.
On April 18, KU headed to Norman, Okla., looking to break its losing streak against the Sooners. The Jayhawks appeared to be on their way after taking the doubles point and getting singles wins from Avdeeva and Svistun in two of the first three matches to be completed. However, OU stormed back, winning each of the remaining three singles matchups, all went three sets, to hand the Jayhawks one of their most stinging defeats of the season, 4-3. KU closed out its regular season on April 22 with a 7-0 loss to No. 21 Texas A&M. Despite the lopsided score, the Jayhawks’ doubles tandem of Hommell and Dorn, who had been competing at No. 2 for less than a month, picked up Kansas’ biggest doubles win of the season when they topped A&M’s 39th-ranked and eventual league champion duo of Lubinsky and Mechem, handing the pair its only conference setback of the spring. At the end of the regular season, the Jayhawks stood at 4-16, including a 2-9 Big 12 record that pitted them as the No. 11 seed in the Big 12 Championships in Kansas City, Mo., which Kansas hosted. The Jayhawks’ first-round opponent was an intriguing one as they were given the opportunity to avenge the stinging loss to Oklahoma. The dual again started in KU’s favor, as the ‘Hawks got doubles wins from Hommell and Dorn, the duo’s third-straight, as well as Avdeeva and Horvath, who outlasted Oklahoma’s No. 1 tandem of Gabby Baker and Irina Lykina in a classic tiebreak match, giving Kansas the 1-0 lead.
Also garnering recognition from the league were Avdeeva and Horvath, who were named All-Big 12 First Team doubles following a seasonElizaveta in which thewas tandem went 12 7-4singles in the conference, the Avdeeva named All-Big and doubles. second-best mark in the No. 1 position. Avdeeva also was placed on the All-Big 12 singles team for the second-straight year.
OU then tied the dual up with a win in the No. 4 match, but Svistun immediately put her squad on top, 2-1, with her dominating victory over OU’s Chelsea Orr in the No. 5 position. The Sooners, however rallied again, winning the next two singles contests to put Jayhawk

2007 Recap Svistun finished second in the league’s No. 5 singles position standings with a record of 8-2, behind only Texas A&M’s Nicki Mechem, who went 9-2. Overall, the Ufa, Russia, native led KU with a 15-6 singles record in the spring, followed by Horvath, who went 11-11. Avdeeva and Horvath finished with a team-best mark of 15-7 in doubles play, while Dorn and Hommell ended with a mark of 5-7. The season proved once again that the Big 12 Conference is one of the nation’s elite. Five of the league’s member schools finished the regular season ranked in the ITA poll, including NCAA
Tournament selections Baylor, Colorado, Texas and Texas A&M. Add to that a non-conference slate that featured four opponents which were ranked at the time of their match with KU, and it’s evident that the Jayhawks took on one of the most daunting schedules in the country. The 2007 spring campaign was a trying year for KU, but with the experience and lessons learned by the team both on and off the court, better days for the Jayhawks are certainly on the horizon.
