7 2008 JAYHAWK CROSS COUNTRY

HEAD COACH

Stanley Redwine

Ninth Year at Kansas/15th Overall (Arkansas, 1985) Since taking the reins of the track and field and cross country teams at the University of Kansas, Stanley Redwine has found success in leaps and bounds. As he enters his ninth year at the helm, Redwine, his staff and his teams continue to establish their marks in the lore of Jayhawk history, shattering school records and adding several AllAmericans to the illustrious luminaries of Kansas’ storied past. Judging by his results, both as a coach and as an athlete, this path looks to continue into the future. In Redwine’s first eight seasons, 33 Kansas student-athletes have achieved 68 All-America honors, and the men’s and women’s teams have combined to set more than 60 school records and crack the KU all-time top-five list in more than 60 events. At Kansas, he has coached four individuals to national championships in six different events. As a result of their outstanding performances, Redwine’s 2001 and 2002 men’s track and field teams were enshrined into the KU Hall of Fame after back-to-back eighth-place finishes at the NCAA Championships. Since coming to Lawrence, Redwine has also found time to coach at the international level. In July of 2007, he traveled to Rio de Janeiro as the men’s head track coach for Team USA at the Pan-American games. Redwine’s athletes took home 20 medals, including three golds. It was the second time Redwine was selected to coach the team, as he also served as an assistant at the 2003 games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Throughout Redwine’s tenure, his teams have also shown great success in the classroom. In the past three seasons alone, the cross country teams have supplied 30 members to the Academic All-Big 12 teams, while the track teams have contributed 72 to the same list. Redwine’s eighth season, the 2007-08 campaign, featured 14 All-Americans combined in cross country and track and field. Colby Wissel became just the fifth cross country runner in school history to earn back-to-back All-America honors. In the 2008 indoor track and field season, nine school records were topped, and Kansas was just one of 10 schools to have both its men’s and women’s teams finish in the top 25 at the NCAA Championships. Senior Egor Agafonov joined a prestigious list with Karl Salb, Jim Ryun and Leo Bookman as the only Jayhawks to successfully defend their indoor national titles, winning the weight throw for the second-straight year. At the outdoor NCAA championships, senior Crystal Manning (long jump and triple jump) and junior Nickesha Anderson (100 meters and 200 meters) each won two All-America honors. Only one other woman (Candace Mason) had accomplished the feat in KU history.

men had their best finish since 1989, ranking 18th in the nation, while the women’s fifth place finish at the Big 12 Championships was their highest showing in 13 years. Six different Jayhawks won individual Big 12 titles (also a school record), and freshman pole vaulter and Big 12 Indoor Performer of the Year, Jordan Scott, won the same award during the outdoor season. In Redwine’s sixth season, the men’s cross country team recorded its best results at both the Big 12 Conference Championships and the NCAA Championships in more than a decade, finishing third and 12th, respectively. Additionally, Redwine and his staff mentored Benson Chesang to back-to-back Big 12 titles in cross country, the first time a Jayhawk had accomplished the feat since the 1950s. On the track, Redwine and his staff oversaw the development of Sheldon Battle, a six-time All-American. Battle was named the 2006 Division I Men’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Year for the Midwest Region. In total, the 2006 track and field season delivered Redwine and his staff six more All-America performers in 10 events. In 2005, Redwine oversaw five athletes who received All-America accolades in outdoor track, as he and his staff guided Amy Linnen to Big 12 and NCAA Championships in the pole vault. The Jayhawk men finished 25th nationally, and the women placed 29th. The summer of 2005 also saw the Jayhawks claim success on the international stage as Paul Hefferon captured the silver medal in the 5000-meter race at the Junior Pan Am Games in Windsor, Ontario. Coach Redwine’s 2004 men’s cross country team tied its Big 12 and regional finishes from the previous season, finishing fourth at both meets. In addition to the first of his two Big 12 Championships, Redwine saw Chesang become the first KU cross country All-American in a decade with a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Championships. During the 2003 season, Redwine guided the women’s indoor track and field team to a fourth-place finish at the Big 12 Conference Championships and a sixth-place finish at the outdoor championships. On the men’s side, Redwine and his staff helped develop Leo Bookman as he became the indoor and outdoor national champion in the 200-meter dash, a feat he would repeat at the indoor championships in 2004. Redwine’s second season at KU was very prosperous. In 2002, he produced eight Big 12 champions, 21 total NCAA qualifiers and two individual national champions. The men’s track team finished eighth in the nation during the indoor season, and then gave a fourth-place

THE REDWINE FAMILY

In 2006-07, the men’s cross country team made its second consecutive NCAA appearance, finishing 20th as Wissel and Paul Hefferon became the first Kansas runners in 12 years to win All-America honors in the same season. Wissel was also one of three indoor athletes to receive All-America honors as the men finished 16th nationally and the women 34th. The outdoor season was one of the best in Redwine’s tenure. The teams set a school record with eight All-Americans, including the first duo of KU men’s long jumpers to claim the distinction in the same year (Eric Babb and Barrett Saunders). The

performance at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships before finishing 21st nationally. Also in 2002, Redwine and his staff guided seven athletes to a total of eight All-America honors, while the men’s squad set four outdoor and seven indoor school records and one all-time collegiate record. In his first season at Kansas, Redwine and his staff made their mark quickly, turning what some considered a rebuilding project into a budding powerhouse. Redwine mentored seven different athletes to a total of nine All-America awards, had three athletes qualify for the USATF Indoor Championships, two athletes compete at the USATF Outdoor Championships, two athletes set a total of three national records, one athlete compete at the IAAF World Championships in Edmonton, Canada, and two athletes compete at the World University Games in Beijing, China. Both of his 2000 cross country teams improved at the Big 12 Conference Championships, as the men placed sixth and the women improved from 11th to eighth. Before Redwine was hired as head coach at Kansas on May 25, 2000, he had a six-year stint as head coach at the University of Tulsa. At Tulsa, Redwine’s athletes broke more than 70 school records, most on multiple occasions. In many events, Redwine’s athletes completely re-wrote the Golden Hurricane’s all-time top-10 performance lists. Including some of the top finishes in conference history, Redwine produced 11 NCAA qualifiers and Tulsa’s first-ever All-American. Redwine also oversaw the Golden Hurricane as they registered some of the highest conference finishes in school history. Prior to his appointment at Tulsa in 1994, Redwine spent 11 years as an assistant coach at the University of Arkansas, one of the premier track and field programs in the nation. During his tenure at UA, the Razorbacks captured nine consecutive NCAA Championships and 22 titles from 1985 to 1994 in both track and field and cross country. He helped produce 14 All-Americans and two NCAA Champions in hurdle and sprint events. Among those All-Americans were two-time 400 meter NCAA indoor and outdoor champion, Calvin Davis; three-time 400 meter and 500 meter NCAA champion, Robbie Haley; and seven-time All-American sprinter, Jimmy French. Before becoming a coach at Arkansas, Redwine placed his name in the Razorback history books as a 400-meter, 600-yard and 800-meter runner from 1980-1983. Redwine was a four-time All-American and was named UA’s Outstanding Track Athlete all four of his years in Fayetteville. He was a six-time conference champion and still ranks among the Razorbacks’ top 10 in six events, which includes anchoring the school’s record-setting sprint medley relay team (3:15.10) at the Penn Relays in 1983, which still ranks as the second-best time in school history. For his achievements, Redwine was inducted into the University of Arkansas Hall of Honor in 2003. Professionally, Redwine retired from competition in 1996 after he finished fifth in the 800-meter run at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Atlanta, Ga. He was a U.S. Olympic Trial qualifier five consecutive times from 1980 to 1996 and was a two-time silver medalist in the 800-meter run at the Goodwill Games (1986, 1994). He also won two bronze medals at the Pan American Games, in 1983 and 1987. Redwine was a five-time World Championship team member (1985, 1987, 1989, 1991, 1993), and a two-time U.S. 800-meter champion. Redwine earned his bachelor’s degree in administrative management from the University of Arkansas in 1985. He and his wife, Jacqueline, have three children: Crysta (26), Stanley, Jr. (23), and Alexa (18).

ASSISTANT COACH

Doug Clark

Ninth Year at Kansas/18th Overall (Central Missouri State, 1981) Doug Clark begins his ninth year at the University of Kansas as an assistant cross country coach and middle distance/ distance coach for the track team. Clark came to KU after six successful seasons as an assistant coach to Stanley Redwine at the University of Tulsa. Clark has worked closely with Redwine throughout his career, also coaching alongside him from 1988-93 at the University of Arkansas. In Clark’s last four seasons at Kansas, the men’s cross country team has had four All-Americans. Colby Wissel (2006, 2007) became just the fifth cross country runner in school history to earn back-to-back AllAmerica honors with his 39th-place finish at the 2007 NCAA Cross Country Championships. Benson Chesang earned the honor in 2004, while Paul Hefferon earned the distinction in 2006. Hefferon and Wissel’s 2006 honors made them the first pair of Jayhawks to receive All-America status in the same season since 1994. Under Clark, the Jayhawk men’s cross country teams finished 12th at the 2005 NCAA Championships and 20th at the 2006 NCAA Championships, Kansas’ first two top-20 finishes since 1994. The team also had back-to-back third-place showings at the conference level in 2005 and 2006, which were the highest finishes since Kansas placed second in the Big Eight Conference in 1981. The second-place finish at the 2006 NCAA Midwest Regionals matched the team’s best effort since the inception of the regional format in 1978. Kansas also boasts three of the last four Big 12 individual champions in Benson Chesang (2004,2005) and Colby Wissel (2006). The 2007 women’s team was headlined by Lauren Bonds, who earned all-region honors. The future is bright for the KU women’s team. The 2008 squad could be the best women’s team since Clark has been at KU. The Jayhawks lost only three seniors to graduation in 2007, with nine letterwinners returning. Only one of those returnees, Megan James, is a senior. The rest of the roster features four juniors, four sophomores and six freshmen.

1,500 meters (two), Mile (two), 3,000 meters (one), 3,000-meter steeplechase (one), 5,000 meters (two), and distance medley relay (four), as well as an additional nine NCAA qualifiers in cross country and track. In that period, the team has also made major revisions to the school’s all-time performance lists, including school records in the men’s and women’s 1,000 meters, women’s 1,500 meters, men’s 3,000 meters and the men’s and women’s distance medley relay. Since arriving at Kansas, Clark also directed Jayhawk alumnus Charlie Gruber to a secondplace finish at the 2004 Olympic Trials, earning him a spot on the 2004 USA Olympic Team in the 1,500-meter run. That year, Gruber ran a 3:34.71 (1,500 meters) and 1:46.30 (800 meters), was champion at the USATF 4K Cross Country Championships and finished second at the USATF Indoor Championships in the 1,500-meter run. In 2005, he oversaw Paul Hefferon to the title at the USATF Junior Championship and to the silver medal at the Pan American Junior Championships (both in the 5,000-meter run). During Clark’s tenure at Tulsa, the distance and middle distance athletes made major modifications to the school record book, including multiple Western Athletic Conference and Missouri Valley Conference championships. Most notably, Clark directed Dwight Davis to a school-record 3:59.29 mile, and Tulsa’s first-ever track All-America honors in the indoor mile and outdoor 1,500-meter run in 2000. Prior to Tulsa, Clark served as an assistant coach at the University of Texas-El Paso in the spring of 1994. While with the Miners, he coached Jim Svenoy to a NCAA Championship in the outdoor 3,000-meter steeplechase. Under Clark, Svenoy also set a Norwegian record in the indoor 3,000-meter run (7:51), good enough for a second-place finish at the NCAA Championships. UTEP finished third in the nation during the indoor season, and was national runner-up during the outdoor championships. While with Arkansas, Clark helped assemble one of the most dominant teams in the history of college athletics. During the 1991-92, 1992-93 and 1993-94 school years, Arkansas won all nine NCAA Championships in cross country (three), indoor track (three) and outdoor track (three). Clark was an NCAA qualifier in cross country at Southwest Missouri State University and qualified for the 2000 Olympic Marathon Trials, running 2:17.40. He was the top Masters runner in Oklahoma from 1996-2000, posting times of 14:58 (5K), 25:45 (8K), and 31:41 (10K).

Throughout Clark’s eight-year tenure, the Jayhawks have produced All-Americans in the

SEASON PREVIEW

NICK CAPRARIO

Men With five returning letterwinners from a team that notched two wins in 2007, the Kansas men’s cross country squad has high hopes for the 2008 season. “We’re definitely excited about the people we have returning,” head coach Stanley Redwine said. “We’re going to be led by Bret Imgrund. He’s been really doing well, and hopefully he’s going to lead the team in doing great things this year.” Imgrund, a junior from Shawnee, Kan., finished at least third on the team in five of the six meets last season, including a runner-up finish at the Kansas State/Kansas Duel where teammate and two-time All-American Colby Wissel was the winner. With the departures of Wissel, All-American Paul Hefferon and fellow graduating seniors Patrick McGowan and Jason Schweitzer, Imgrund will be looked to for leadership this season. “I think any time you lose two All-Americans, you definitely have to have someone step up and do a great job,” Redwine said. “It’s an opportunity for others to lead.” Nick Caprario had a solid freshman season, and looks to have repeat success in 2008. The sophomore from Kearney, Neb., competed in all six KU meets last year. In his debut at the Bob Timmons Classic, he delivered a 17th-place finish and followed that by placing a 14

career-best sixth at the Kansas State/Kansas Duel. Caprario went on to finish sixth on the team at the Big 12 Championships and concluded his freshman campaign by recording the fifth-best KU time at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships. “As a freshman, Nick had a really good year,” Redwine said. “Now that he knows what to expect and how to season himself, we’re expecting him to step up and do a great job. When we’re talking about filling in for some of the seniors that are gone, Nick is going to be one of our main people this year. So we’re looking forward to him being successful.” Dan Van Orsdel also competed in every event for the Jayhawks in 2007, placing anywhere from third to seventh on the team throughout the year. The sophomore from Minnetonka, Minn., turned it up a notch at the end of the season, finishing third on the team at the Midwest Regional (71st overall) with a personal-best 10K time of 32:11. Van Orsdel turned in his best finish (eighth place) and a career-best 5K time of 16:27.2 at the Kansas State/ Kansas Duel. Redwine’s 2008 men’s squad features just one returning senior, Victor Chesang. Chesang, who hails from Nairobi, Kenya, looks to regain the form he had in 2006 when he set personal bests in both the 5K and 8K. The nephew of twotime Big 12 Champion and former Jayhawk runner Benson Chesang had his

2008 JAYHAWK CROSS COUNTRY

SEASON PREVIEW best performance of 2007 at the Kansas State/Kansas Duel, where he placed 16th. Levi Huseman, a junior from Tonganoxie, Kan., ran a career-best in the 8K last season at the NCAA Pre-Nationals. His best finish was 13th place at the Kansas State/Kansas Duel. The performances of both Huseman and Chesang will be key to how good the Jayhawks are this year. Redshirt freshman Clay Schneider also enters the KU roster, along with ten other newcomers. The fresh faces hoping to boost the Jayhawk lineup include freshmen Josh Baden, Sam Bird, Greg Bussing, Kaleb Humphreys, Diego Ladron, Sean Proehl, Don Wasinger and Zach Zarda as well as transfers Isaiah Shirlen (junior) and Brock Ternes (senior). “Everyone has a role,” Redwine explained. “With the new people that are coming in now, there is definitely something expected of them. I think in order for the team to succeed, some of those guys have to step up and produce immediately. If we have to redshirt some of the others we can, but I think that there are some of them that can come in and contribute to the team right away.” With a good balance of veterans and underclassmen, KU looks to have the necessary pieces to make another run at an NCAA Championships appearance in 2008. “We have to be hitting on all cylinders,” Redwine said. “I think in order for that to happen, we have to have good leadership and we need everyone else to do their job. We’re looking for guys to come in and step up, and for our underclassmen to be good leaders.” Women Hopes are high for the 2008 KU women’s cross country team. The Jayhawk women return nine letterwinners with only three departures and look to improve upon back-to-back 11th-place finishes at the Big 12 Championships. “We have a little bit more experienced team this year with the women,” Redwine said. “We’re looking for them to place better this year than they did last year, when we had a young team. I think overall our women’s team will be a better program.” Leading the way for KU will be Lauren Bonds. The junior from Hutchinson, Kan., was the team’s No. 1 runner in every meet she competed in last season. She earned all-region honors with a 25th-place finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships. Bonds placed third at the Bob Timmons Classic and turned in a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Pre-Nationals. At the Big 12 Championships she placed 30th, a career-best conference finish. “Lauren has done an excellent job for us,” Redwine said. “She is a great competitor. That’s one thing that she has. She’s able to compete and go beyond expectations. In saying that, there are other teammates (of Bonds)

2008 JAYHAWK CROSS COUNTRY

who will definitely fill the gap and do well.” Amanda Miller made a splash as a freshman in 2007, and looks to do more of the same this year. The sophomore from Overland Park, Kan., competed in all six KU meets last season, contributing to the scoring effort in five of those six meets. Miller finished 14th in her debut at the Bob Timmons Classic and placed a career-best 10th at the next meet, the Kansas State/Kansas Duel. She finished 38th at the NCAA Pre-Nationals and turned in a personal-best time at the Midwest Regional (22:23) to finish in 96th place. “Amanda is quite a competitor,” Redwine said. “What it comes down to is her knowing she can do it throughout the race. Last year was a new distance for her, and towards the end of the season she figured out that she could do it. She went out and did a great job for us at the end of the season, and she’ll do the same this year.” Alison Knoll returns after being a consistent No. 5 runner for the Jayhawks in 2007. The junior from Shawnee, Kan., placed 11th at the Kansas State/Kansas Duel and finished 61st at the NCAA Pre-Nationals. Knoll saved her best for last, recording a personal-best 6K time of 22:25 at the Midwest Regional. The lone senior on the roster this season is Megan James. A Kansas City, Mo., product, James participated in every one of the Jayhawks’ 2007 meets. She finished seventh on the team in five of the six meets and placed sixth on the team (13th overall) at the Kansas State/Kansas Duel. Two other returning juniors for the KU women are Kellie Schneider and Cassi Sokol. Sophomores Kaitlyn Coen, Claire Hall and Riley Wertenberger are the rest of the Jayhawk returnees. Redshirt freshman Kara Windisch and freshmen Amanda Akin, Laura Nightengale, Lindsay Schaefer, Rebeka Stowe and Devin Wiegers also look to add depth for KU this year. “It has to be a total team effort,” Redwine said. “I’ve never been one to single people out and say that the season depends on their performance. The team has to do well, and in order for the team to do well, every individual has to do their part. That’s what we’re looking for.” With nine returnees and only one senior in 2008, the future looks bright for the Kansas women’s cross country team. “Last year was a learning experience for them, being a very young team,” Redwine said. “The athletes know what’s expected of them, they know how to season themselves, and they know how to race. They are in better shape a year later, they’re more mature, and I think they will do a better job.” “When it comes down to the rest of the conference and the rest of the nation, they’re thinking the same thing, so we really have to step up and do a good job.”

2007 SEASON REVIEW

LAUREN BONDS

Despite neither team qualifying for the NCAA Championships in 2007, Kansas cross country had a solid season with 12 Jayhawks earning Academic All-Big 12 honors and the continued success of seniors Paul Hefferon and Colby Wissel as well as sophomore Lauren Bonds. The Kansas men started off the season hot with two team wins. At the Bob Timmons Classic, the Jayhawks won with Wissel taking the individual title with a time of 25:49. Hefferon, who ran with Wissel the entire way, finished one second behind with a time of 25:50. KU also won the Kansas State vs. Kansas Duel, defeating the Wildcats 39-21. Wissel notched his second victory of the season with a 5K time of 15:07. Following his performance at the Kansas State vs. Kansas Duel, Wissel was named the Big 12 Cross Country Runner of the Week for the second time in his career. It was the fourth time overall that a Jayhawk had won the award. In their first big meet of the season, the Kansas men placed 13th out of 23 teams at the 22nd annual Roy Griak Invitational. Wissel and Hefferon led the Jayhawks again by placing 7th (24:42) and 18th (24:55), respectively. At the Big 12 Championships, Kansas finished seventh with Wissel placing fifth to make the All-Big 12 team for the third consecutive year. Competing in its biggest meet of the season, the Midwest Regional, the team was unable to qualify for nationals as they placed 10th. However, the meet did have bright spots, with Wissel and Hefferon earning all-region honors. Wissel placed fifth to earn a spot at the NCAA Championships. At Nationals, Wissel placed 39th with a 10K time of 30:36 and was named an AllAmerican by virtue of him being one of the top-30 American-born finishers. Wissel was the fifth Jayhawk overall and the first to be named an All-American twice since legend Billy Mills accomplished the feat in 1959. Five men’s runners were named to the Academic All-Big 12 team. Hefferon, junior Alex Rock and sophomore Dan Van Orsdel were named to the first team. Wissel joined junior Levi Huseman on the second team.

Wissel, Hefferon, Jason Schweitzer and Patrick McGowan all completed their final seasons as KU cross country runners. However, a strong nucleus was bulit for future seasons. Sophomore Bret Imgrund was consistently the third finisher on the team and has a personal-best time of 25:02 for the 8K. Freshman Nick Caprario was a welcome addition to the team who scored in all but one meet for Kansas. Van Orsdel stepped up at the end of the season to finish third on the team at the Midwest Regional with a 10K time of 32:11. The Kansas women, like the men, won the Bob Timmons Classic to make it a Jayhawk sweep. Bonds highlighted the meet with a third-place finish with a time of 22:52 on the hilly terrain. KU had five runners in the top 15. Throughout the season Bonds solidified her spot as the team’s number one runner as she was the first Jayhawk to cross the finish line at every meet she ran. Bonds’ season was highlighted by a personal-best 6K time of 21:05 at the Midwest Regionals. Her 25th-place performance earned her all-region honors. Besides Bonds, senior Alicia McGregor was the most consistent Jayhawk runner. McGregor placed second on the team in three meets, with a personal-best time coming in the last meet of her career. She ran a 6K time of 21:56 while placing 70th at the Midwest Regionals. Seven women made the Academic All-Big 12 team. Sophomores Claire Hall, Sarah Nackley and Bonds joined senior Lisa Morrisey and junior Megan James on the first team, while senior Hayley Harbert and sophomore Kaitlyn Coen earned spots on the second team. Seniors Morrisey, Harbert and McGregor each finished their Jayhawk careers in 2007. Freshman Amanda Miller will return in 2008 to improve on a great first year. Miller finished in the top five on the team in five of the six meets in 2007. Sophomore Alison Knoll also provides a bright spot for the future. She finished either fifth or sixth in every meet and had a personal-best time of 22:25 at the Midwest Regionals.

LEGENDARY JAYHAWKS

Wes Santee (1952-55)

A legendary Kansas Jayhawk, Wes Santee’s contributions to Kansas cross country and track and field are among the bedrocks of the tradition-rich heritage. Santee, an Ashland, Kan. native, captured the NCAA championship in 1953, giving KU the individual crown for the third time in four years. In fact, Santee’s All-American performance at the 1953 NCAA Championships propelled the Kansas cross country team to the NCAA title, the only cross country team in KU’s history to achieve the feat. Santee also excelled at the conference level, claiming back-to-back league championships in 1952 and 1953 and helping his team collect two Big Seven Conference championships (1952 and 1953). Santee was a member of the 1952 U.S. Olympic team in the 5,000 meters. He broke three world records while at Kansas, twice setting new marks in the indoor mile run (1954, 4:04.9; 1955, 4:03.8) and in the outdoor 1,500 meters (1954, 3:42.8). A two-time outdoor All-American, Santee won the 5,000 meters in 1952 and the mile run in 1953. Santee collected seven conference championships: three indoor (1952-54, mile run; 1953, 880 yards) and four outdoor (1952-54, mile run; 1953, 880 yards). A member of the KU Hall of Fame, Santee’s statue at Rim Rock Farm can be found at the start of the second mile of the course, west of the Shady Glen.

LEGENDARY JAYHAWKS

Herb Semper (1949-52)

A member of the Kansas cross SEMPER’S ACCOLADES country program during its • 1950 and 1951 NCAA Cross Country Champion golden era under the direction • 1950 and 1951 Big Seven Individual Conference Champion of head coach Bill Easton, Herb Semper firmly established his mark in the lore of Kansas cross country. Semper became the first Jayhawk to win an NCAA championship, prevailing in 1950 and 1951. He remains the only runner in KU history to win two cross country individual national championships. Under Easton’s guidance, Semper was a member of two Big Seven Conference championship teams (1950 and 1951) and was a two-time Big Seven individual champion (1950 and 1951). Semper is also a member of the KU Hall of Fame. Semper’s excellence extended to the Kansas track and field team as well. A four-time Big Seven Conference champion in the two-mile run (1950-52 indoor; 1950 outdoor), Semper was a two-time outdoor All-American after back-to-back third-place finishes in the two-mile run at the NCAA Championships. Semper’s statue at Rim Rock Farm (see map below) is surrounded by three ponds (Teardrop Pond, Jayhawk Pond and Pat’s Little Pond) on the northeast portion of the course.

LEGENDARY JAYHAWKS

Jim Ryun (1966-69)

There is perhaps no other athlete more associated with Kansas distance running than Jim Ryun. His legend extends far beyond his KU acomplishments. A three-time Olympian (1964, 1968 and 1972), Ryun captured silver at the 1968 games in Mexico City in the 1,500 meters, duplicating the performance of former Jayhawk Glenn Cunningham at the 1936 games. During his tenure at KU from 1966-69, Ryun broke five world records, including the world outdoor mile record twice, and also claimed five individual NCAA titles. Before attending Kansas, Ryun became the first high school runner to complete the mile run in under four minutes. In addition, his national high school mile record of 3:55.3, set over 30 years ago, still stands today for events completed in the U.S. Inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1982, Ryun’s statue at Rim Rock Farm sits atop the Jim Ryun Skyline Bend and is among the first statues visitors see when turning into Rim Rock Farm.

RYUN’S ACCOLADES • Broke five world records while at Kansas • Five NCAA Championships • Still Holds 11 Outdoor and three Indoor Track and Field records • 1972 Olympic Silver Medalist in 1,500-meter run

LEGENDARY JAYHAWKS

Glenn Cunningham (1931-34)

One of the earliest cross country greats to don the Crimson and Blue was Glenn Cunningham. A member of the KU Hall of Fame, Cunningham was a two-time Big Six Conference cross country champion, capturing the league crown in 1931 and 1932. Cunningham also excelled in track and field while at Kansas, breaking the world record in the indoor 1,500 meters (3:53.3) in 1934 and both the indoor mile (4:08.4) in 1932 and the outdoor mile (4:06.7) in 1933. During his tenure on the track at KU, he served as team captain in 1934 and won 12 conference championships: four indoor (1932-34, mile run and 1934, 880-yard run) and eight outdoor (1932-34, mile run; 1932-34, 880-yard run; 1933-34, two-mile run). In 1932 and 1933, Cunningham was the NCAA champion in the mile run, earning All-American accolades in the process. A two-time Olympian in the 1,500 meters (1932 and 1936), Cunningham won the silver medal at the 1936 summer games in Berlin. In 1974, he became one of the first inductees into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. In accordance with his early success, Cunningham’s statue is located near the start of the course. The finish line at Rim Rock Farm is affectionately known as the Glenn Cunningham Finish.

CUNNINGHAM’S ACCOLADES • 1931 and 1932 Big Six Cross Country Conference Champion • Silver Medalist in 1,500-meter run at 1936 Olympics • Broke three world records while at Kansas

LEGENDARY JAYHAWKS

Billy Mills (1958-61)

Gold medalist. All-American. Hall-of-Famer. Kansas Jayhawk. All these accolades describe Billy Mills, who made his impact on the Kansas tradition with golden footprints. A two-time All-American (1958 and 1959), Mills captured the 1960 Big Eight cross country championship. He was also a part of two Big Eight Conference team titles while at KU (1958 and 1959) under head coach Bill Easton. However, Mills’ legacy at KU extends far beyond the borders of the Sunflower State. A member of the 1964 United States Olympic team, Mills won the gold medal in the 10,000 meters and set a new Olympic record. In dramatic fashion, Mills came from behind on the last lap to win the race in Tokyo and to this day, he is still the only American to win the event. Mills’ success was also evident on the track and field team, as he set a world record in the six-mile run in 1965 (27:11.6). He won two Big Eight Conference championships, capturing both the indoor and outdoor championships in 1961 and was a member of both the 1959 and 1960 NCAA championship track teams. Inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1976, Mills’ iconic statue, in which his arms are raised high, is placed on the last straightaway of Rim Rock Farm, saluting the runners for their perseverance and will to compete. In fact, the pose of Billy’s silhouette is identical to the one he struck upon winning the gold medal at the 1964 Olympics.

MILLS’ ACCOLADES • 1958 and 1959 All-American • 1960 Big Eight Cross Country Champion • 1964 10,000 meter Olympic Gold Medalist

LEGENDARY JAYHAWKS

John Lawson (1963-66)

As the most recent Kansas cross country runner to win the NCAA championships, John Lawson’s career signals yet another chapter in the golden era of Kansas cross country. In 1965, Lawson pulled off an impressive sweep, capturing both the Big Eight Conference championship and the NCAA individual title and was recognized with All-America status. A member of the KU Hall of Fame, Lawson also performed valiantly on the Kansas track and field team, earning three All-America awards: one indoor for his second-place performance in the two-mile run and two outdoor for consecutive second-place finishes in the three-mile run in 1965 and 1966. At the conference level, Lawson captured four individual championships: three indoor (1964 and 1966, two-mile run; 1966, mile run) and one outdoor championship (1965, three-mile run). Lawson’s statue at Rim Rock Farm can be found near the end of the third mile of the course, southwest of the finish line.

LEGENDARY JAYHAWKS

Al Frame (1952-55)

A teammate of Wes Santee, Al Frame carved out an equally impressive cross country and track and field career while attending the University of Kansas. A member of the 1953 NCAA championship team, Frame won the individual NCAA championship in 1954. Under the tutelage of head coach Bill Easton, Frame was a member of three Big Seven Conference championship teams while at KU. He also won the Big Seven individual championship twice, netting the accomplishment in back-to-back years (1954 and 1955) and was the last Jayhawk to do so until Benson Chesang won the Big 12 Championships in consecutive years (2004 and 2005). A 1954 and 1955 All-America honoree, Frame, like so many before him, also found success on the track and field team. During his time on the team, Frame captured six Big Seven Conference championships: four indoor (1954, two-mile run; 1955-56, mile run; 1956, 880-yard run) and two outdoor (1955, mile run; 1955, two-mile run). A third-place finish at the outdoor NCAA Championships in 1955 added All-America status to Frame’s resume. A member of the KU Hall of Fame, Frame’s statue at Rim Rock Farm is located just north of Pat’s Little Pond on the third mile of the course.

FRAME’S ACCOLADES • 1954 and 1955 Big Seven Champion • 1954 and 1955 All-Amercian • 1954 NCAA Champion

LEGENDARY JAYHAWKS

Bob Timmons (1966-88)

Bob Timmons is to Kansas Cross Country what Phog Allen is to Kansas Basketball. The man who coched KU to four NCAA Track and Field Championships is perhaps most noted for bringing Jim Ryun to Lawrence. Timmons coached Ryun at Wichita East High School until 1964, when he became an assistant at KU for a year under Bill Easton. Ryun then followed Timmons to Kansas where he continued to thrive under Timmons’ coaching. Timmons was an 11-time NCAA District V Coach-of-the-Year and was the 1975 U.S. Track and Field Coaches Association National Coach-of-the-Year. At the helm of the KU track and field program, he led the Jayhawks to 13 indoor league crowns and 14 outdoor titles. In cross country, Timmons guided John

Lawson to the 1965 NCAA Individual Championship. In 1970, Timmons and his wife, Pat, purchased land just north of Lawrence. In 1974 that property became known as Rim Rock Farm and it has been home of the Jayhawk Cross Country team ever since. Rim Rock Farm is now known as one of the best and toughest courses in the nation and is a credit to Timmons’ vision and passion for cross country. The annual Bob Timmons Invitational is held each September in his honor on the course he put so much work into. During his career, Timmons coached 77 AllAmericans, 24 NCAA champions, 16 world record holders and seven Olympians. Timmons is a member of the Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of Fame, the KU Hall of Fame, and the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame. TIMMONS’ ACCOLADES • 11-time NCAA District V Coach-of-the-Year • Four Track and Field NCAA Championships • 1975 USTFCA National Coach-of-the-Year

LEGENDARY JAYHAWKS

Bill Easton (1948-65)

In a career that spanned over three decades, Bill Easton built a reputation of one of the nation’s best track and field coaches. Before coming to Kansas in 1948, Easton won three-straight cross country NCAA Championships with Drake University while also serving as the meet director for the Drake Relays. At Kansas, his teams were always near the top of the conference. His cross country teams won 15 conference championships and never finished worse than second in his 18 years as coach. He won conference titles in cross country, indoor and outdoor track for eight consecutive years. The first highlight of Easton’s Jayhawk career came in 1953 when his cross

country team won the NCAA Championship. He later won the 1959 and 1960 outdoor men’s track and field titles. Easton coached 32 AllAmericans including Wes Santee, Herb Semper, Al Frame, Billy Mills and John Lawson. In track and field, he mentored Olympic champions Bill Nieder and Al Oerter. All together, Easton coached eight Olympians. His KU athletes set 14 intercollegiate records, seven NCAA records, 14 American records, four Olympic records and four world records. He is a member of seven different halls of fame including the KU Hall of Fame and the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame. The Bill Easton Scoreboard stands in his honor near the finish line at Rim Rock Farm. EASTON’S ACCOLADES • Four NCAA Individual Cross Country Champions • 1953 NCAA Cross Country Champions • 10 Top-six finishes at NCAA Championships • 15 Conference Championships • 12 Individual Conference Champions

RIM ROCK FARM The University of Kansas hosts its home cross country meets at historic Rim Rock Farm, northwest of Lawrence. Before being donated to KU in 2004, the property was owned by former head track and field and cross country coach Bob Timmons and has been the home of the Jayhawks since the 1974 season.

In the fall of 2006, Rim Rock Farm played host to its first Big 12 Cross Country Conference Championships. Rim Rock Farm hosted the Big Eight Cross Country Championships in 1983, 1991 and 1995, and was also the site of the 1998 NCAA Division I and II Cross Country Championships as well as numerous Kansas high school state meets.

Any runner or spectator will say that the course is quite challenging and unusual. In addition to having two covered bridges as part of the course, Rim Rock Farm also features specific hills, turns and other landmarks that are named after former Jayhawk greats. Dispersed throughout the course are silhouette statues of seven legendary Jayhawk distance runners including Herb Semper, Al Frame, John Lawson and Olympians Billy Mills, Wes Santee, Glenn Cunningham and Jim Ryun.

Rim Rock Farm is home of the Jayhawks, but also home to former Kansas runner Steve Heffernan. After donating the course to KU, Timmons made sure that the cozy house in the middle of the farm had a full-time tenant. Heffernan is currently responsible for the farm’s upkeep, while also serving as head coach of cross country and track and field at Lawrence Free State High School.

Rim Rock Farm was the vision of Coach Timmons, who, during his 23-year tenure, won two cross country conference championships. “There is something for everyone at Rim Rock Farm,” Timmons said. “Parents are afforded the opportunity to walk around throughout the course and find all the wonderful places to observe. Spectators can catch the runners three or four times throughout the event and explore the different elevations. And the runners can navigate a course that will challenge them with its obstacles and amaze them with its beauty. That’s what makes Rim Rock Farm so exciting.” KING’S BRIDGE

Directions to Rim Rock Farm: Those traveling to Rim Rock from the Kansas Turnpike are advised to take the East Lawrence exit and then travel north on Kansas Highway 24/59 (which curves to the west) for approximately 2.5 miles before turning right (north) on the asphalt road at the Midland Store. Approximately 2.5 miles later, watch for an abandoned natural gas station on the right and make a left turn (west) at that point onto a gravel road. About .25 miles ahead, make a right turn and follow the gravel road approximately 1.33 miles (north) to the course. Maps are available through the cross country office by calling (785) 864-3486 or by visiting www.kuathletics.com. GLENN CUNNINGHAM FINISH

THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS schools in allied health, architecture and urban planning, business, education, engineering, fine arts, journalism and mass communications, law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy and social welfare. KU also has expanded geographically, adding the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.; the School of Medicine clinical branch in Wichita; the Edwards Campus in Overland Park; and educational and research facilities throughout the state. In addition, KU prepares students for success in an increasingly global economy. Among public universities, KU ranks seventh in the nation for the percentage of its students who study abroad and 25th in the nation for the number of graduates serving as Peace Corps volunteers.

KANSAS ROOTS, GLOBAL REACH The University of Kansas — fondly known as KU — is a tradition-rich, comprehensive research university that throughout its distinguished history has excelled in creating superior, enduring value for students, the state of Kansas and the world. Founded by the same determined New Englanders who had emigrated to the Kansas Territory to create a state free of slavery, KU became one of the first universities of the Great Plains. The university opened its doors on Sept. 12, 1866, to 29 men and 26 women. Never in its history has KU restricted admissions based on race or gender. Since its early years, KU has been fueled by high aspirations and today enjoys a national reputation for innovation and academic excellence. In 1890, the first chapters of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi west of the Mississippi River were chartered at Lawrence. The following year, the KU Endowment Association was established, the first foundation of its kind supporting a state-assisted university. Not to be forgotten: KU initiated interscholastic basketball competition in 1898 under the leadership of Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of the game. With a student body of nearly 30,000 and an endowment with assets of more than $1 billion, KU has become a diversified, broad-based center of learning with professional

WORLD-CLASS, ACCESSIBLE EDUCATION KU teachers have earned international distinction: 12 have been elected national academy members, 33 are fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and 283 have received Fulbright awards for international study since 1950. Astronaut Steve Hawley, a Salina native and KU graduate, will return to Lawrence in fall 2008 to join the Department of Physics and Astronomy. He’ll teach students and travel the state emphasizing the importance of science education. Led by these world-class teachers, KU students have achieved an impressive record of major honors: 25 Rhodes, 406 Fulbright, 45 Goldwater, 24 Mellon, 16 Truman, 16 Udall and nine Marshall scholarships. Architecture magazine has twice bestowed its “Home of the Year” award on KU student-built projects. The debate team has won four national titles. Journalism and math students have placed first in their respective collegiate competitions. The attractiveness of KU to outstanding high school graduates is reflected in the current student body. In fall 2007, 30 percent of KU first-time freshmen scored 27 or higher on the ACT or converted SAT equivalent. Nationally, 15 percent of ACT test takers scored 27 or above. The average freshman ACT score of 24.6 is a record high for KU, well above the national average of 22 Last fall, KU enrolled 35 National Merit scholars, eight National Hispanic scholars and two National Achievement scholars. THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS PATH-BREAKING RESEARCH KU is known for bioscience research in areas such as cancer, vaccines and Parkinson’s disease. The KU Cancer Center seeks to heighten Kansans’ access to breakthrough treatments by becoming a designated National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Center. Strong programs in drug development and delivery are fueled by the School of Pharmacy, which is No. 1 in the nation in portion of faculty funded by the prestigious National Institutes of Health, and No. 4 overall in funding. KU’s total research expenditures in all disciplines reached $289 million in 2007. There are 19 KU-developed technologies in the marketplace and nearly 70 new invention disclosures a year. Professors across campus are researching critical topics such as climate change, monarch migration, payday lending businesses and avian flu. KU students contribute to major research, too. One student studied why — despite the risks — people talk on cell phones while driving. DEEP ANALYSIS OF KU A nationwide study by Indiana University, the “Documenting Effective Educational Practice” report, in 2004 lauded KU as a progressive research university that thoroughly engaged students in the learning process. “Many other colleges and universities will benefit from learning about KU policies and practice,” the DEEP report stated. UNIVERSITY STATISTICS • 20,298 undergraduates and 5,321 graduate students at the Lawrence and Edwards campuses; 2,918 students at the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. • More than 100 fields of study and more than 100 opportunities to study abroad are offered to students. • $165 million in financial aid and scholarships went to more than 16,000 students in 2007-08. ATHLETICS DIRECTOR Lew Perkins Director of Athletics Lew Perkins has served as Director of Athletics at the University of Kansas since June 2003. He arrived at KU after achieving nationally recognized success as athletics director at the University of Connecticut. Kansas Athletics has experienced tremendous growth and success during Perkins’ short tenure. • In the spring of 2008, the studentathletes in KU’s 18-sport program achieved unprecedented success in the classroom. Eleven KU teams posted 3.0 grade-point averages or better and 282 studentathletes on active rosters (58 percent) posted a 3.0 GPA or higher, including 58 with perfect 4.0 GPA’s. Kansas student-athletes earned a combined 3.03 grade-point average during the 2008 spring semester, setting an Athletics Department-record for a spring semester. • The football team won the 2008 Orange Bowl, capping a school-record 12-win season, and the team has been bowl-eligible in four of the last five years; • The men’s basketball team won the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship, reached the Elite Eight of the 2004 and 2007 NCAA Championships and has won the last three Big 12 Conference regular-season championships, as well as the last two Big 12 tournament titles; • The women’s volleyball team has appeared in three NCAA tournaments, reaching the second round in 2003 and 2004; • The women’s soccer team has appeared in two NCAA tournaments, reaching the Sweet 16 in 2003; • The softball team won the Big 12 Championship in 2006 and reached the NCAA tournament for the second straight season; • The baseball team won the Big 12 Championship in 2006 and reached the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1994; • The women’s basketball team reached the 2008 and 2006 Women’s National Invitation Tournament; • Several track-and-field student-athletes have won NCAA titles, and many have received All-America and All-Big 12 honors.

level, Perkins has served as Chair of the Big 12 Board of Athletics Directors and as a member of the Big 12 Television Committee. In spring 2005 he was named to the Board of Directors of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Additionally, he is a member of the Gatorade Board of Directors. At Connecticut (1990-2003), Perkins was instrumental in guiding UConn athletics to impressive growth - athletically, academically and financially. His leadership influenced six NCAA Division I National Championships. He was rewarded in 2000 as the inaugural winner of the National Athletic Director of the Year Award as selected by Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal, in conjunction with the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). A native of Chelsea, Mass., Perkins was inducted into his high school Hall of Fame in 1989. A highly recruited basketball player, he played at the University of Iowa (1965-67) for Hall of Fame coach and KU graduate Ralph Miller. Perkins earned his undergraduate degree there in 1967. Perkins served as Director of Athletics (1969-80) and head basketball coach (1969-79) at the University of South Carolina Aiken as that institution grew from a junior college to a four-year institution. He received his master’s degree in education (1975) from the University of South Carolina. Perkins delivered the commencement address and received an honorary Doctor of Education degree at USC Aiken in May 2005. Perkins also has served as athletics director at the University of Maryland and Wichita State University, and associate director of athletics at the University of Pennsylvania. Perkins is married to the former Gwen Flaum. Like Lew, Gwen earned an undergraduate degree from Iowa and a master’s degree in education from the University of South Carolina. They have two daughters - Amy (husband Brandon Macneill) and Holly - and two granddaughters (Caroline and Alexandra Macneill).

Kansas Athletics fundraising has reached unprecedented levels. Under Perkins, KU’s $27-million athletics budget has grown to more than $55 million. That fundraising, including landmark apparel and corporate-partner contracts, has resulted in greater services for KU coaches and student-athletes, and numerous upgrades in KU’s athletics facilities: • The Booth Family Hall of Athletics, which opened in January 2006 in Allen Fieldhouse, celebrates the tradition and history of Kansas Athletics; a beautiful Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame exhibit was unveiled in the Hall of Athletics in February 2008. • The spirit and aura of Allen Fieldhouse has been enhanced by renovations that were completed prior to the 2005-06 season and include freshly painted bleachers, new windows, new lighting and sound systems, and a new center-hung scoreboard, which includes a large, state-of-the-art video board; • The baseball complex now includes an indoor hitting facility and a new scoreboard, complete with a large, state-of-the-art video board; • The Anderson Family Football Complex and two new practice fields - adjacent to Kivisto Field at Memorial Stadium - have recently been completed; • A new Aquatic Rehabilitation Center houses three Hydroworx pools that enhance rehabilitation efforts under the guidance and supervision of the University of Kansas Sports Medicine Staff.

CHANCELLOR Dr. Robert Hemenway University Chancellor Robert Hemenway’s life has been marked by accomplishment as an administrator, teacher and scholar. As the 16th chancellor of the University of Kansas, he is the chief executive of the university, which includes the main campus in Lawrence, the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas, the Edwards Campus in Overland Park and the School of Medicine-Wichita, along with facilities in Garden City, Hays, Parsons, Pittsburg, Topeka and Yoder. Under Hemenway’s leadership, a growing number of KU academic programs have received national recognition, and the achievements of faculty and students have cemented KU’s position as an international research university. U.S. News & World Report ranks 12 KU graduate programs in the top 10 nationwide and 26 in the top 25. KU’s graduate programs in city management and urban policy and special education are ranked first in the nation. KU enrolls more Kansans than any other university, with 70 percent of its more than 29,000 students coming from the Sunflower State. The diverse student body is highly talented, with an average ACT score well above the national average. KU students regularly win the nation’s most prestigious awards, including Rhodes, Goldwater, Marshall, Fulbright, National Science Foundation and Udall scholarships. In intercollegiate competitions, KU students excel — the men’s basketball team was the 2008 NCAA Champions, the debate team ranked first in the nation for the 2007-08 season, the journalism program was first in the Hearst writing competition and the football team was the victor in the 2008 Orange Bowl. Research at KU, a major source of Kansas economic growth, has climbed steadily, reaching $289 million in fiscal year 2007. The university’s No. 1 research priority is to achieve National Cancer Institute designation for the KU Cancer Center at the KU Medical Center in Kansas City. This designation will lead to superior cancer research and care for citizens throughout the state and region. As a public institution, KU remains focused on working for the people of Kansas. KU doctors treat patients throughout the state, during medical outreach trips and via telemedicine. KU researchers measure groundwater levels in western Kansas, while law enforcement officers trained by KU’s Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center protect Kansans in every county. Leaders of other universities recognize Hemenway’s administrative talents. In November 2007, he was elected to the 11-member executive committee for the Association of American Universities, an organization representing the nation’s most prestigious research universities. He has also served on the board of directors for the American Council on Education, the National Association of State and Land Grant Colleges and the NCAA Division I Board of Directors, which he chaired from 2002 to 2005. Hemenway remains a committed scholar and teacher. He is known for his biography of AfricanAmerican novelist Zora Neale Hurston, a “Best Books” pick by the New York Times in 1978 and a Quality Paperback Book Club selection in 1991. Hemenway also stays connected to the classroom, most recently teaching an honors seminar on global poverty. Hemenway grew up in Hastings, Nebraska. Before becoming chancellor of KU, he served as chancellor of the University of Kentucky. Hemenway and his wife, Leah, live in the Outlook, the KU chancellor’s official residence. Four of the chancellor’s eight children are KU graduates. The Hemenways have seven grandchildren.

TRADITIONS THE ROCK CHALK CHANT The Rock Chalk Chant has been the battle cry of KU fans for more than 80 years. This strange, traditional chant, which is among the most famous of all college cheers, was started by E.H.S. Bailey, a professor of chemistry. Bailey wanted a cheer for his Science Club. Returning from a convention in Wichita, Bailey and some associates patterned a yell after the rhythmic cadence of their train rolling along the tracks. On May 21, 1886, Bailey submitted the cheer to his club. Even though there was no football team at KU until 1890, the Rock Chalk Chant tradition steadily grew. Before the University adopted the cheer in 1897, it consisted of “Rah, Rah, Jayhawk, KU” being repeated three times. An English professor soon suggested that “Rock Chalk” be substituted for “Rah, Rah” because it rhymed with Jayhawk. “Rock Chalk” was also symbolic of the chalky limestone formations found on Mount Oread. Professor Bailey would be amazed to hear 50,000 Jayhawk football fans shouting the cheer he gave his Science Club in 1886; a cheer that Teddy Roosevelt said was the best he had ever heard. CAMPANILE HILL Campanile Hill forms the picturesque backdrop for Memorial Stadium. On a sunny fall Saturday, the “Hill” is transformed into a congregating place for watching Jayhawk football, sunning and barbequing. Potter Lake, just to the southeast of Memorial Stadium and at the bottom of Campanile Hill, adds to the beauty of the Kansas campus.

WAVING THE WHEAT Since the early days of KU football, it has been a ritual of Jayhawk fans to “wave the wheat” following every Kansas scoring drive. The ritual consists of fans waving their arms in the air, an activity which, when done by a large Memorial Stadium crowd, resembles a breezy Kansas wheat field. THE NICKNAME During the Civil War a regiment raised by Kansas Governor Charles Robinson called itself the “Independent Mounted Jayhawks” (later officially the First Kansas Calvary and then the Seventh Kansas Regiment). By the end of the Civil War the word Jayhawk was associated with the spirit of camaraderie and the courageous fighting qualities that characterized efforts to keep Kansas a free state. By 1886, the University of Kansas had adopted the mythical bird as part of the KU yell. When the university’s football team first took the field in 1890, it seemed only natural that they should be called Jayhawkers. Few colleges and universities have such a meaningful symbol, one so deeply associated with the struggles of the people who founded them.

THE FIGHT SONG George “Dumpy” Bowles, a student with the class of 1912, longed to make a great contribution to KU spirit, but wasn’t athletic enough to do historic deeds on the a thletic field. He turned to music and produced some outstanding student musical shows. A song in one of these shows was “I’m a Jayhawk.” Written in 1912, it was dormant until 1920 when a growth in school spirit brought out “I’m a Jayhawk” once more. The song contributed to the raising of funds to build both the stadium and union as World War I memorials. The 1926 glee club made it known n ationally.

The Big 12 Conference has established a consistent level of national success on the field and in the classroom as it enters its 13th season in 2008-09.

She was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in 2007, but rebounded to win All-America honors at the 2008 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Since it began play in 1996-97, the Conference can boast 31 team crowns and over 385 individual NCAA Championships. The success continued during 2007-08 as Kansas captured the Big 12’s first national title in men’s basketball, while the league added 31 individual crowns.

Competitive excellence, scholarship and sportsmanship are all equal components of the Big 12 philosophy. All-Big 12 teams and Academic All-Big 12 squads are recognized for each sport at the end of their respective seasons.

Over the past four seasons a total of 12 NCAA trophies have been hoisted by Big 12 institutions, with at least one national crown won in all but one year for the Conference, including each of the past 11 seasons. The Big 12 leads all conferences with five appearances in Bowl Championship Series title games. League squads have played for the football national championship five times in the last nine years with berths in 14 BCS games overall, including two in 2007. The Big 12 led all conferences with four teams ranked in the Top 10 in the final national polls a season ago. In addition, an all-time high eight league players earned consensus All-America recognition in 2007, more than any other conference. In basketball, nine men’s and women’s teams have advanced to their respective Final Fours in the past seven seasons as the Big 12 continues its place among the elite intercollegiate athletic conferences. The six men’s Final Four participants since 2002 is more than any conference. Numerous national honors have been won by basketball student-athletes during the league’s history, with Michael Beasley (Kansas State), D.J. Augustin (Texas) and Courtney Paris (Oklahoma) the most recent to garner accolades as consensus All-America in 2007-08. The Big 12 and its member institutions are committed to a competitive environment where sportsmanship and fair play take center stage. Whether on the field, in the classroom, or within the community the student-athletes, administrators, coaches and game officials of the Big 12 support the highest ideals in sportsmanship. Big 12 student-athletes also do well in garnering national academic recognition. Sarah Pavan (Nebraska) was named Academic All-America of the Year in volleyball the past two seasons by ESPN The Magazine and College Sports Information Directors of America with a 4.0 grade-point average in Biochemistry. She also won the national academic honor presented for all sports in 2006-07 and was named recipient of the prestigious 2006-07 Honda-Broderick Award as Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year. She is the first athlete since the Big 12 was formed to earn the accolade. In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Augustin was an Academic All-America First Team choice. In its history, the conference can boast of over 300 academic honorees, averaging more than 25 each season. The Big 12 can boast of other stories that combine on and off the field success. Patience Knight (Texas Tech) was the recipient of the Honda Inspiration Award in 2008, given to an outstanding female college athlete who overcomes adversity to excel in her sport.

At the end of each academic year, the Conference honors its top male and female student-athletes with the Big 12 Athlete of the Year and Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year awards. Institutions can also nominate student-athletes for the prestigious Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarships at the end of each academic year. A total of 201 scholars have received over $1.2 million in postgraduate financial aid through the first 12 years of the program. The Big 12 sponsors 21 sports. Men’s squads include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and wrestling. Women’s teams are fielded in basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball. The conference is made up of 12 institutions that have shared many traditional rivalries throughout their histories. Member schools include - Baylor University, University of Colorado, Iowa State University, University of Kansas, Kansas State University, University of Missouri, University of Nebraska, University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University, University of Texas, Texas A&M University and Texas Tech University. The institutions created a league that encompasses seven states, over 45 million people and television households in 18 of the top 100 markets within its geographic footprint. The conference conducts championships for 20 of its 21 sports. Each championship helps to determine teams and/or individuals that will represent the Conference in national postseason competition. The winner of the Big 12 football championship game earns the league’s berth into the prestigious Bowl Championship Series. In the last several years the Big 12 has increased its bowl agreements and expanded television opportunities for all sports through contracts with ABC/ESPN, FSN and CBS College Sports. Most recently, the league renewed and expanded its multi-year arrangement with ABC/ESPN, Inc. The new contract begins in 2008-09. In its first 12 years, the Conference has distributed more than $1 billion to its 12 member institutions. The Big 12 staff administers to over 4,600 student-athletes in 21 sports. The conference is headquartered in Irving, Texas.
