2009 Jayhawk Cross Country

Season Outlook With the loss of only three seniors between the men’s and women’s squads and the return of 10 letterwinners, the KU cross country teams are poised and ready to attack in 2009. “We’re really excited about this upcoming season,” Head Coach Stanley Redwine said. “We have some newcomers that will make an immediate impact on the team and the maturity we’ve seen in our returning athletes from last year to this year is extremely encouraging. We certainly have all the elements to have a great cross country season.” WOMEN The women’s team tied their best showing in the last five years at the 2008 conference meet, finishing eighth overall in the Big 12. Entering the 2009 season, the team will enjoy a complete roster, as they boast a solid group of veteran runners and an influx of new talent; all of whom have the ability to score big throughout the season.

In addition to Bonds, Allison Knoll and Amanda Miller represent two other upperclassmen who will help lead the squad in 2009. Miller finished behind Bonds as the Jayhawks’ No. 2 runner in all six races in 2008, while Knoll consistently held the No. 4 position. Miller opened her 2008 season as the runner-up at the Bob Timmons Classic, followed by a fifthplace finish at the Missouri Cross Country Challenge. She posted a career-best 6K time of 21:47.70 at the ISU Pre-Nationals race, which was nearly a minute faster than her previous record. Knoll, an experienced member of the KU squad, turned in several solid performances last season, including her best overall finish of seventh at the Bob Timmons Classic, where she posted a career-best 5K time of 19:41.70.

Donny Wasinger 8

“Although I am confident that any of our freshmen have the ability to hop into the top three at any time, the returning athletes of Bonds, Miller and Windisch really proved themselves as our stable runners last season and we will again rely on them to take care of business,” Redwine said. Among the new additions to the KU roster are high school standouts Kyra Kilwein, the Lawrence Free State High School recordholder in the 4K, and Kathleen Thompson, a four-time state qualifier in cross country and a member of the 2009 Missouri State Champion 4x800 meter relay team. Joining Kilwein and Thompson on the list of accomplished freshmen are Natalie Becker, Brenna Farren, Allie Marquis and Tessa Turcotte. These six new faces will add depth to the KU roster and play a significant role in improving upon the results from last season. MEN On the men’s side, the squad welcomes back nine of the 11 runners who competed at the Big 12 Championships. The team that suffered slightly last year from a young roster will now look to their experience as the prevailing factor for success in 2009. Donny Wasinger, a sophomore from Winona, Minn., emerged as the Jayhawks’ premier runner during the 2008 season. He was the No. 1 finisher for KU in four of six meets last year and posted a season-best 8K time of 25:17.63 at the conference championship. As a freshman, Wasinger led his team at the Midwest Regional, finishing the grueling 10K in 32:09.80 to take 28th place overall. Along with Wasinger, senior Bret Imgrund will pick up where he left off as one of the top runners in Crimson and Blue. The Shawnee, Kan., native was among the Jayhawks’ top three finishers in five of six meets last season, including the OSU Jamboree, where he led the squad with an 8K time of 25:48. He turned in his best time of the season at the Big 12 Championships, finishing the 8K race in 25:30.98.

Kara Windisch

Leading the charge for the women is senior Lauren Bonds, who is coming off arguably the best season for a female in Jayhawk history. Not only did Bonds lead the squad in all six races last year, but she finished among the top 15 overall in five of six meets and took home two individual medals at the Bob Timmons Classic and Missouri Cross Country Challenge. She became only the second woman in KU history to earn All-Big 12 First Team honors with a 12th-place finish at the Big 12 Championships. She was named to the all-region team for her performance at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship, where she finished in 15th place with a 6K time of 21:29.70. Bonds is a strong competitor who undoubtedly has the drive to win.

Kara Windisch returns after a highly successful season as a redshirt freshman. The Overland Park, Kan., native established herself as the Jayhawks’ No. 3 runner early in the 2008 season, after finishing just seconds behind Miller at the Bob Timmons Classic and Missouri Cross Country Challenge. Windisch was also one of KU’s top performers at the Big 12 Championships, clocking in at 22:25.20 to finish in 41st place overall.

2009 Jayhawk Cross Country “Donny Wasinger and Bret Imgrund were our consistent top two from last season and, as both are returning this year, we can expect to get strong leadership and great results out of them,” Redwine said. Joining them as returning Jayhawks are juniors Dan Van Orsdel and Nick Caprario. “Nick Caprario has always been good when it comes time,” Redwine said. “He has stepped up in the past and often filled that third or fourth spot in the lineup and we expect him to continue to run well for us this season.” Caprario saved his best performance of the 2008 season for the Big 12 Championships, as he finished third on the team and 40th overall with a time of 25:32.58. Van Orsdel also proved himself as a reliable team member, competing in all six meets, with his best finish coming at the OSU Cowboy Jamboree. He was the No. 3 runner for KU and posted a seasonbest 8K time of 25:29. Along with the veterans, KU had several newcomers make an impact in 2008, including Zach Zarda and Kaleb Humphreys. “Zarda is another guy who can come in at any time and do a really good job for us,” Redwine said. Zarda was the first to cross the finish line for Kansas at the Missouri Cross Country Challenge, finishing the 8K race in 27:12.82 and taking sixth overall. Humphreys ran in all six meets as a true freshman, earning his highest team finish of third at the Midwest Regional. He turned in a season-best 26:09.10 at the ISU Pre-Nationals race, followed by a 26:15.08 at the Big 12 Championships. The men’s squad welcomes two new faces to the roster; Sam Cosgrove, a senior transfer from Miami-Ohio, and David Roberts, a freshman from Mulvane, Kan. Roberts is the reigning state champion in the 3,200 meters and placed fourth at last year’s state cross country championships. The Jayhawks have six events on tap for 2009, starting their season in usual fashion with the Bob Timmons Classic at Rim Rock Farm. Both the men and women won the event last year and hope to continue their dominance on their home course this season. “Although we are still in our base phase of training during the first two meets, we plan to throw a lot at the team when they first report to campus, so they will be ready for our early competitions,” Redwine said. “We look at the season as a continued progression from the first meet to the NCAA and we will expect better performances out of them every week.”

After their debut event, the teams will travel to Columbia, Mo., for the Missouri Cross Country Challenge, followed by the OSU Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla. KU then heads to the site of the 2009 NCAA Championships for the highly competitive ISU Pre-Nationals race on Oct. 18. After a short two-week hiatus, the Jayhawks will vie for a conference title at the Big 12 Championships in Columbia, Mo. “In order for us to place better we obviously need to be better compared to our competition,” Redwine said. “Everyone in the Big 12 is training harder and getting better. What it comes down to is we need to be both mentally and physically prepared to race at that level.”

Lauren Bonds

The Jayhawks begin NCAA competition with the Midwest Regional Championships on Nov. 14, followed by the NCAA National Championships on Nov. 23.

Stanley Redwine Head Coach 10th Year (Arkansas, 1985) Since taking the reins of the track and field and cross country teams at the University of Kansas, Stanley Redwine has found success in leaps and bounds. As he enters his 10th year at the helm, Redwine, his staff and his teams continue to establish their marks in the lore of Jayhawk history, shattering school records and adding several All-Americans to the illustrious luminaries of Kansas’ storied past. Judging by his results, both as a coach and as an athlete, this path looks to continue into the future. In Redwine’s first nine seasons, 33 Kansas student-athletes have achieved 69 AllAmerica honors, and the men’s and women’s teams have combined to set more than 61 school records and cracked the KU all-time top-five list in more than 60 events. At Kansas, he has coached four individuals to national championships in six different events. As a result of their outstanding performances, Redwine’s 2001 and 2002 men’s track and field teams were enshrined into the KU Hall of Fame after back-to-back eighth-place finishes at the NCAA Championships. Since coming to Lawrence, Redwine has also found time to coach at the international level. Most recently, he was selected as the distance coach for Team USA at the 2009 IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Berlin, Germany. In July of 2007, he traveled to Rio de Janeiro as the men’s head track coach for Team USA at the Pan-American games. Redwine’s athletes took home 20 medals, including three golds. It was the second time Redwine was selected to coach the team, as he also served as an assistant at the 2003 games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Throughout Redwine’s tenure, his teams have also shown great success in the classroom. In the past four seasons alone, the cross country teams have supplied 39 members to the Academic All-Big 12 teams, while the track teams have contributed 86 to the same list. After losing six All-Americans in 2008 and welcoming a combined 44 new faces to the men’s and women’s rosters, the 2008-09 season was a year of growth for both the cross country and track and field programs. Despite the youth-driven squads, Redwine saw 23 athletes make the KU all-time top five lists and two new school records set. He also led five athletes to the NCAA Championships throughout the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.

All-America Honors (XC/Track & Field) Academic All-Big 12 selections in last four seasons

Under the direction of Redwine, Lauren Bonds became only the second woman in Kansas history to earn All-Big 12 First Team honors in cross country, after she finished 12th at the Big 12 Championships in 2008. Bonds also set two new school records during the indoor track season in the mile (4:43.74) and 1,000 meters (2:46.60). Redwine’s eighth season, the 2007-08 campaign, featured 14 All-Americans combined in cross country and track and field. Colby Wissel became just the fifth cross country runner in school history to earn back-to-back All-America honors. In the 2008 indoor track and field season, nine school records were topped, and Kansas was just one of 10 schools to have both its men’s and women’s teams finish in the top 25 at the NCAA Championships. Senior Egor Agafonov joined a prestigious list with Karl Salb, Jim Ryun and Leo Bookman as the only Jayhawks to successfully defend their indoor national titles, winning the weight throw for the second-straight year. At the outdoor NCAA championships, senior Crystal Manning (long jump and triple jump) and junior Nickesha Anderson (100 meters and 200 meters) each won two All-America honors. Only one other woman (Candace Mason) had accomplished the feat in KU history. In 2006-07, the men’s cross country team made its second consecutive NCAA appearance, finishing 20th as Wissel and Paul Hefferon became the first Kansas runners in 12 years to win All-America honors in the same season. Wissel was also one of three indoor athletes to receive All-America honors as the men finished 16th nationally and the women 34th. The outdoor season was one of the best in Redwine’s tenure. The teams set a school record with eight All-Americans, including the first duo of KU men’s long jumpers to claim the distinction in the same year (Eric Babb and Barrett Saunders). The men had their best finish since 1989, ranking 18th in the nation, while the women’s fifth-place finish at the Big 12 Championships was their highest showing in 13 years. Six different Jayhawks won individual Big 12 titles (also a school record), and freshman pole vaulter and Big 12 Indoor Performer of the Year, Jordan Scott, won the same award during the outdoor season. In Redwine’s sixth season, the men’s cross country team recorded its best results at both the Big 12 Conference Championships and the NCAA Championships in more than a decade, finishing third and 12th, respectively. Additionally, Redwine and his staff mentored Benson Chesang to back-to-back Big 12 titles in cross country, the first time a Jayhawk had accomplished the feat since the 1950s. On the track, Redwine and his staff oversaw the development of Sheldon

2009 Jayhawk Cross Country Battle, a six-time All-American. Battle was named the 2006 Division I Men’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Year for the Midwest Region. In total, the 2006 track and field season delivered Redwine and his staff six more All-America performers in 10 events. In 2005, Redwine oversaw five athletes who received All-America accolades in outdoor track, as he and his staff guided Amy Linnen to Big 12 and NCAA Championships in the pole vault. The Jayhawk men finished 25th nationally, and the women placed 29th. The summer of 2005 also saw the Jayhawks claim success on the international stage as Paul Hefferon captured the silver medal in the 5000-meter race at the Junior Pan Am Games in Windsor, Ontario. Coach Redwine’s 2004 men’s cross country team tied its Big 12 and regional finishes from the previous season, finishing fourth at both meets. In addition to the first of his two Big 12 Championships, Redwine saw Chesang become the first KU cross country All-American in a decade with a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Championships. During the 2003 season, Redwine guided the women’s indoor track and field team to a fourth-place finish at the Big 12 Conference Championships and a sixth-place finish at the outdoor championships. On the men’s side, Redwine and his staff helped develop Leo Bookman as he became the indoor and outdoor national champion in the 200-meter dash, a feat he would repeat at the indoor championships in 2004. Redwine’s second season at KU was very prosperous. In 2002, he produced eight Big 12 champions, 21 total NCAA qualifiers and two individual national champions. The men’s track team finished eighth in the nation during the indoor season, and then gave a fourth-place performance at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships before finishing 21st nationally. Also in 2002, Redwine and his staff guided seven athletes to a total of eight All-America honors, while the men’s squad set four outdoor and seven indoor school records and one all-time collegiate record. In his first season at Kansas, Redwine and his staff made their mark quickly, turning what some considered a rebuilding project into a budding powerhouse. Redwine mentored seven different athletes to a total of nine All-America awards, had three athletes qualify for the USATF Indoor Championships, two athletes compete at the USATF Outdoor Championships, two athletes set a total of three national records, one athlete compete at the IAAF World Championships in Edmonton, Canada and two athletes compete at the World University Games in Beijing, China. Both of his 2000 cross country teams improved at the Big 12 Conference Championships, as the men placed sixth and the women improved from 11th to eighth. Before Redwine was hired as head coach at Kansas on May 25, 2000, he had a six-year stint as head coach at the University of Tulsa. At Tulsa, Redwine’s athletes broke more than 70 school records, most on multiple occasions. In many events, Redwine’s athletes completely re-wrote the Golden Hurricane’s all-time top-10 performance lists. Including some of the top finishes in conference history, Redwine produced 11 NCAA qualifiers and Tulsa’s first-ever All-American. Redwine also oversaw the Golden Hurricane as they registered some of the highest conference finishes in school history. Prior to his appointment at Tulsa in 1994, Redwine spent 11 years as an assistant coach at the University of Arkansas, one of the premier track and field programs in the nation. During his tenure at UA, the Razorbacks captured nine consecutive NCAA Championships and 22 titles from 1985 to 1994 in both track and field and cross country. He helped produce 14 All-Americans and two NCAA

Redwine was a four-time All-American and was named UA’s Outstanding Track Athlete all four of his years in Fayetteville. He was a six-time conference champion and still ranks among the Razorbacks’ top 10 in six events, which includes anchoring the school’s record-setting sprint medley relay team (3:15.10) at the Penn Relays in 1983, which still ranks as the second-best time in school history. For his achievements, Redwine was inducted into the University of Arkansas Hall of Honor in 2003. Professionally, Redwine retired from competition in 1996 after he finished fifth in the 800-meter run at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Atlanta, Ga. Michael Whittlesey, Ph.D. Assistant Coach First Year (Connecticut, 1990) Michael Whittlesey is in his first season as assistant coach for cross country and middle distance/distance running at Kansas. Whittlesey came to KU after serving 11 years as the assistant coach in charge of cross country and distance running for the track program at North Carolina. In addition to his coaching duties at UNC, Whittlesey worked as the assistant director for both men’s and women’s track and field and cross country for the past four seasons. Under his direction, North Carolina produced nine NCAA individual and relay titles in six years, 70 All-Americans and 36 conference champions. Most recently, Whittlesey led the track team to back-toback NCAA titles in the distance medley relay at the 2006 and 2007 Indoor NCAA Championships. Along with the 2007 distance medley relay title, Whittlesey coached sophomore anchor Brie Felnagle to the individual NCAA title in the outdoor 1,500 meters. Under the guidance of Whittlesey, Felnagle captured three NCAA titles and was named an All-American 10 times in her career. Additionally, in his 11 years at the helm of the cross country program at UNC, the Carolina women's team advanced to the NCAA Championships 10 times, including a program-best sixth-place finish in 1999. With a 10th-place finish in 2004, the Tar Heel women posted back-toback top-10 NCAA finishes for the first time in school history. After assisting the Tar Heels to a fourth-place indoor finish and another top-10 outdoor finish and producing four NCAA individual and relay titles, Whittlesey was awarded the first-ever NCAA Division I Track and Field National Assistant Coach of the Year for women's middle distance/distance in 2003. Whittlesey also received the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field East Regional Assistant Coach of the Year honor. On top of the great team success during Whittlesey’s tenure at UNC, the Tar Heels also witnessed some of the greatest individual distance athletes in school history during his term. Perhaps no other athlete thrived under Whittlesey more than Shalane Flanagan. Flanagan was the NCAA cross country champion in 2002 and 2003. Not only was Flanagan the first Carolina woman to ever take the cross country national championship, but she was only the third woman in NCAA history to successfully defend her title. A threetime recipient of the NCAA Cross Country Athlete of the Year award, Flanagan also excelled on the track. She won a pair of indoor national championships in 2003. Individually, she claimed the title in the 3000 meters, and then teamed up with teammates Erin Donohue, Anissa Gainey and Alice Schmidt to take first-place honors in the distance medley relay. Flanagan also earned a spot on the 2004 U.S. Olympic 5,000 team before claiming a bronze medal in the 10,000 at the 2008 Olympic Games.

Along with Flanagan, Whittlesey coached standout runner Alice Schmidt, who was a two-time national champion in the outdoor 800 and the first North Carolina track and field athlete to win an NCAA title in the same event twice. Both Schmidt and Flanagan went on to earn places on the 2005 U.S. Track & Field World Championship team, while Erin Donohue earned All-America status in both cross country and track. All three athletes earned spots on the 2007 U.S. Track and Field World Championship team, as well as the 2008 US Olympic team. Whittlesey has twice won both the ACC Cross Country Coach of the Year and Southeast Region Coach of the Year awards, earning each in 1999 and 2003. A native of Morris, Conn., Whittlesey started his coaching career at UNC-Charlotte, where he served two years as an assistant coach. While with the 49ers, Whittlesey coached his athletes to 53 new school records in 18 different events and coached all-conference performers in the triple jump and javelin. Before his time at Charlotte, Whittlesey coached at the University of Connecticut for six years and also served as an assistant strength coach. Whittlesey's competitive experience includes being the first American finisher in the 1995 Boston Marathon. He also qualified for the 1996 Olympic Trials in the marathon after competing as a non-recruited athlete at the University of Connecticut. He graduated from UConn in May 1990 with a bachelor's degree in sports medicine/athletic training and later earned a master's in biophysical science/exercise physiology in 1993. In 1997, Whittlesey received a doctorate of philosophy in sports science/exercise physiology from UNC. Whittlesey and his wife, Carol, have two children: five-year-old daughter Samantha Paige and three-year-old son Ryan Allen.

Athletics Director Lew Perkins Lew Perkins has served as Director of Athletics at the University of Kansas since June 2003. He arrived at KU after achieving nationally recognized success as athletics director at the University of Connecticut. That success has continued at KU. In the summer of 2008 Perkins topped the public voting in TIME Magazine’s online poll of the best sports executives in the world. He was the only college sports administrator to make TIME’s list of 35 individuals, which includes team owners, team managers, league commissioners and other executives from around the world. Kansas Athletics has experienced tremendous growth and success during Perkins’ tenure. Student-athletes have excelled in athletic programs in conference and national play, bringing home conference titles, bowl games and national championships under Perkins’ leadership. Success can also be found in the classroom, with student-athletes setting new records for academic excellence. Kansas Athletics fundraising has reached unprecedented levels, resulting in greater services for student-athletes, coaches and numerous upgrades in KU’s athletics facilities. Under Perkins, Kansas Athletics’ $27-million budget has grown to more than $55 million. Perkins has 41 years experience in college athletics and is one of the most respected athletics directors in the country. A native of Chelsea, Mass., Perkins was inducted into his high school Hall of Fame in 1989. A highly recruited basketball player, he played at the University of Iowa (1965-67). Perkins earned his undergraduate degree there in 1967. He obtained his master’s degree in education (1975) from the University of South Carolina and received an honorary Doctor of Education degree at USC Aiken in May 2005. Perkins has served on many NCAA, Big 12 Conference and other prestigious committees, including the Basketball Issues Committee. At the conference level, Perkins has served as Chair of the Big 12 Board of Athletics Directors and as a member of the Big 12 Television Committee. In spring 2005 he was named to the Board of Directors of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. He and his wife Gwen have been married 41 years. Their daughter Amy and her husband Brandon Macneill, Executive Associate Athletic Director at Tulane University, are parents to Caroline and Alexandra. Daughter Holly obtained her juris doctorate from the University of Kansas School of Law and is an associate at Polsinelli Shughart in Kansas City. Lew and Gwen are committed to the well-being of all student-athletes, coaches and staff, and are proud to call Kansas home.

University Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little A highly regarded scholar, teacher and university leader, Bernadette Gray-Little began her tenure as the 17th chancellor of the University of Kansas on August 15, 2009. As KU chancellor, Gray-Little is the chief executive officer of the university, overseeing campuses in Lawrence, Kansas City, Overland Park and Wichita in addition to research and educational centers in Topeka, Hutchinson, Parsons and elsewhere in the state. She succeeds Robert Hemenway, who served as KU chancellor for 14 years. Chancellor Gray-Little previously was executive vice chancellor and provost from 2006 to 2009 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A professor of psychology, Gray-Little rose to the post of UNC’s chief academic officer after successive administrative appointments, including dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, executive associate provost, senior associate dean for undergraduate education for the college, and chair of the Department of Psychology. In these roles, she earned a reputation as a superb fundraiser, a relationship builder, a strong advocate for faculty and for research, and a champion for the highest quality educational experience for students. A native of eastern North Carolina, Gray-Little received her bachelor’s degree from Marywood College in Scranton, Pa., and her master’s and doctoral degrees in psychology from St. Louis University. Her postdoctoral research in cross-cultural psychology was funded by a fellowship from the Fulbright Foundation for study in Denmark. She has also been a Social Science Research Council Fellow and a recipient of a Ford Foundation Senior Scholar Fellowship through the National Research Council. Her research falls primarily into three areas, two of which reflect a continuing interest in the relation of social and cultural factors to personality and psychopathology. First, she has studied the relevance of the client and clinician’s ethnic/racial membership to the diagnosis and treatment of psychological disorder. The second area concerns the social determinants of self-esteem and is manifest in research on factors associated with self-esteem in children and adolescents of varied ethnic groups. In a third area of research she has explored the association of relationship satisfaction to the decision-making and influence strategies used by couples in intimate relationships. Gray-Little is married to Shade Key Little, who was assistant dean for academic support services at UNC. They have two adult children and one grandchild.

2009 Jayhawk Cross Country

2008 Season Review It was a year of growth for the Kansas cross country teams, as a combined 15 freshmen were featured on the men’s and women’s rosters as opposed to just three seniors. Junior Lauren Bonds and freshman Donny Wasinger consistently led the Jayhawks during the 2008 campaign, while several others moved in out and out of the top five throughout the season. Despite the young membership on both squads, KU put forth a valiant effort and posted many strong performances in 2008. The Jayhawks opened the season with a dominating performance, sweeping the men's and women's races at the annual Bob Timmons Classic. It didn’t take long for Bonds to get started on what would prove to be one of the greatest individual seasons by a KU women’s runner in school history. The Hutchinson, Kan., native turned in an eye-opening performance, crossing the finish line in a 5K personal-best time of 18:53.10 to win the race by 24 seconds over runner-up and teammate Amanda Miller. Miller, a sophomore from Overland Park, Kan., also finished with a 5K personal record of 19:17.20. On the men’s side, Wasinger also made an early name for himself. The freshman from Winona, Minn., turned in the best performance for the men, with a fifth-place overall finish and a personal 8K record of 25:56. Two weeks later at the Missouri Cross Country Challenge, Bonds found herself in the winner's circle once again, while both the KU men's and women's teams finished in second place behind host Missouri. Bonds posted a time of 18:59.29 to take home the women's individual title at A.L. Gustin Golf Course. Miller was the next Jayhawk to finish, placing fifth overall with a time of 19:20.75. For the second straight race, a freshman paced the KU men in Columbia. This time it was Zach Zarda, a product of Marantha Academy in Shawnee, Kan. Zarda finished in sixth place overall with a time of 27:12.87, while junior transfer Isaiah Shirlen finished right behind in seventh place (27:18.80). For their efforts in Columbia, Bonds and Zarda were named Big 12 Runners of the Week by the conference office. Bonds became the first women’s runner in KU history to win the award, while Zarda joined two-time All-American Colby Wissel as recent KU men to achieve the honor. Bonds’ ninth-place finish at the 72nd annual OSU Cowboy Jamboree (Oct. 4) led Kansas to a fourth place finish in a 27-team field. On the men’s side, five Jayhawks ran season-best times, as KU placed seventh in a 23-team field. Bonds finished the 6K course with a time of 21:32, while juniors Bret Imgrund and Wasinger paced the Kansas men. Imgrund and Wasinger ran the 8K course neck-and-neck, both finishing in a season-best time of 25:48. Imgrund narrowly captured 42nd place and Wasinger finished in 43rd.

In the most competitive field of the season for Kansas, the Jayhawk men and women finished 36th and 23rd, respectively, at the ISU Pre-Nationals meet (Oct. 18), held on the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Huate, Ind.

Riley Wertenberger, Amanda Miller, Rebeka Stowe, Kara Windisch, Kaitlyn Coen

Bonds led the women’s team for the fourth-consecutive race, placing 64th individually with a 6K time of 21:24.90. She was followed by Miller, who finished 94th overall in 21:47.70. Leading the Jayhawk men was Wasinger, who finished in 160th place after running a 25:21.1 8K. He was followed by Imgrund at 25:36.2 (183rd). Next up for the Jayhawks was the much anticipated Big 12 Championships. Bonds put together arguably the best performance of the season, based on the level of competition. She finished in 12th place with a time of 21:31, becoming the second women’s runner in Kansas history to earn All-Big 12 honors. Wasinger was the top finisher for the KU men for the third time during the season. He placed 28th in his first Big 12 Championships appearance in a time of 25:17.63, his second-best career 8K time. Both the KU men’s and women’s teams finished in eighth place overall. The eighth-place women’s finish tied for the second-best Big 12 Championships performance in school history, behind a sixth-place finish by the women in 2002. Led by top-35 performances from the usual suspects (Bonds, Wasinger, Imgrund and Miller), the Kansas men’s and women’s teams finished eighth and seventh, respectively, at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships, held on the campus of Oklahoma State University. Bonds finished in 16th place with a 6K time of 21:29.70 to lead the KU women, while Wasinger was once again the highest finisher for the men’s team in his first career 10K race. He finished in 29th place with a time of 32:09.80. Imgrund was right behind in 31st place, running a career-best 10K time of 32:11.60. Midwest Regionals marked the final event of the 2008 season for the Jayhawks, but the team said goodbye to only two (Brock Ternes and Megan James) of 14 runners who competed at the event. James was a two-year letterwinner and a three-time All-Academic Big 12 First Team selection. She ran in all six races as a senior, posting a careerbest 6K time of 21:19.60 at the ISU Pre-Nationals race. Ternes was a senior transfer from Emporia State, who competed in all six of KU’s 2008 races. He turned in his best finish at the Missouri Cross Country Challenge, finishing third on the team and eighth overall with a time of 27:46.66. Also graduating in 2009 was Victor Chesang, nephew of twotime Big 12 Champion and Jayhawk runner Benson Chesang.

2009 Jayhawk Cross Country

Glenn Cunningham (1931-34) One of the earliest cross country greats to don the Crimson and Blue was Glenn Cunningham. A member of the KU Hall of Fame, Cunningham was a two-time Big Six Conference cross country champion, capturing the league crown in 1931 and 1932. Cunningham also excelled in track and field while at Kansas, breaking the world record in the indoor 1,500 meters (3:53.3) in 1934 and both the indoor mile (4:08.4) in 1932 and the outdoor mile (4:06.7) in 1933. During his tenure on the track at KU, he served as team captain in 1934 and won 12 conference championships: four indoor (1932-34, mile run and 1934, 880-yard run) and eight outdoor (1932-34, mile run; 1932-34, 880-yard run; 1933-34, two-mile run). In 1932 and 1933, Cunningham was the NCAA champion in the mile run, earning All-America accolades in the process. A two-time Olympian in the 1,500 meters (1932 and 1936), Cunningham won the silver medal at the 1936 summer games in Berlin. In 1974, he became one of the first inductees into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. In accordance with his early success, Cunningham’s statue is located near the start of the course. The finish line at Rim Rock Farm is affectionately known as the Glenn Cunningham Finish.

CUNNINGHAM’S ACCOLADES • 1931 and 1932 Big Six Conference Cross Country Champion • Silver Medalist in 1,500-meter run at 1936 Olympics • Broke three world records while at Kansas

Bill Easton (1948-65) In a career that spanned three decades, Bill Easton built a reputation as one of the nation’s best track and field coaches. Before coming to Kansas in 1948, Easton won three-straight cross country NCAA Championships with Drake University while also serving as the meet director for the Drake Relays. At Kansas, Easton’s teams were always near the top of the conference. His cross country teams won 15 conference championships and never finished worse than second in his 18 years as coach. He won conference EASTON’S ACCOLADES titles in cross country, indoor and outdoor track • Four NCAA Individual Cross Country Champions for eight consecutive years. The first highlight of • 1953 NCAA Cross Country Champions Easton’s Jayhawk career came in 1953 when his • 10 Top-six finishes at NCAA Championships cross country team won the NCAA Championship. • 15 Conference Championships He later won the 1959 and 1960 outdoor men’s • 12 Individual Conference Champions track and field titles. Easton coached 32 All-Americans including Wes Santee, Herb Semper, Al Frame, Billy Mills and John Lawson. In track and field, he mentored Olympic champions Bill Nieder and Al Oerter. Altogether, Easton coached eight Olympians. His KU athletes set 14 intercollegiate records, seven NCAA records, 14 American records, four Olympic records and four world records. He is a member of seven different halls of fame, including the KU Hall of Fame and the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame. The Bill Easton Scoreboard stands in his honor near the finish line at Rim Rock Farm.

Al Frame (1952-55) Al Frame carved out an impressive cross country and track and field career while attending the University of Kansas. A member of the 1953 NCAA championship team, Frame won the individual NCAA championship in 1954. Under the tutelage of head coach Bill Easton, Frame was a member of three Big Seven Conference championship teams while at KU. He also won two Big Seven individual championships, netting the accomplishment in back-to-back years (1954 and 1955) and was the last Jayhawk to do so until Benson Chesang won the Big 12 Championship in consecutive years (2004 and 2005). A 1954 and 1955 All-America honoree, Frame, like so many before him, also found success on the track and field team. During his time on the team, Frame captured six Big Seven Conference championships: four indoor (1954, two-mile run; 1955-56, mile run; 1956, 880-yard run) and two outdoor (1955, mile run; 1955, two-mile run). A third-place finish at the outdoor NCAA Championships in 1955 added All-America status to Frame’s resume. FRAME’S ACCOLADES • 1954 and 1955 Big Seven Champion • 1954 and 1955 All-Amercian • 1954 NCAA Champion

A member of the KU Hall of Fame, Frame’s statue at Rim Rock Farm is located just north of Pat’s Little Pond on the third mile of the course.

John Lawson (1963-66) As the most recent Kansas cross country runner to win the NCAA championship, John Lawson’s career signals yet another chapter in the golden era of Kansas cross country. In 1965, Lawson pulled off an impressive sweep, capturing both the Big Eight Conference championship and the NCAA individual title and was recognized with All-America status. A member of the KU Hall of Fame, Lawson also performed valiantly on the Kansas track and field team, earning three AllAmerica awards: one indoor for his second-place performance in the two-mile run and two outdoor for consecutive secondplace finishes in the three-mile run in 1965 and 1966. At the conference level, Lawson captured four individual championships: three indoor (1964 and 1966, two-mile run; 1966, mile run) and one outdoor (1965, three-mile run).

LAWSON’S ACCOLADES • 1965 Big Eight Cross Country Champion • 1965 NCAA Champion • 1965 and1966 All-American

Billy Mills (1958-61) Gold medalist. All-American. Hall-of-Famer. Kansas Jayhawk. All these accolades describe Billy Mills, who made his impact on the Kansas tradition with golden footprints. A two-time All-American (1958 and 1959), Mills captured the 1960 Big Eight cross country championship. He was also a part of two Big Eight Conference team titles while at KU (1958 and 1959) under head coach Bill Easton. However, Mills’ legacy at KU extends far beyond the borders of the Sunflower State. A member of the 1964 United States Olympic team, Mills won the gold medal in the 10,000 meters and set a new Olympic record. In dramatic fashion, Mills came from behind on the last lap to win the race in Tokyo and to this day, he is still the only American to win the event. Mills’ success was also evident on the track and field team, as he set a world record in the six-mile run in 1965 (27:11.6). He won two Big Eight Conference championships, capturing both the indoor and outdoor championships in 1961, and was a member of both the 1959 and 1960 NCAA championship track teams.

MILLS’ ACCOLADES • 1958 and 1959 All-American • 1960 Big Eight Cross Country Champion • 1964 10,000 meter Olympic Gold Medalist

Inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1976, Mills’ iconic statue, in which his arms are raised high, is placed on the last straightaway of Rim Rock Farm, saluting the runners for their perseverance and will to compete. In fact, the pose of Mills’ silhouette is identical to the one he struck upon winning the gold medal at the 1964 Olympics.

Jim Ryun (1966-69)

RYUN’S NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS 1967: Mile, Indoor 1967: Mile, Outdoor 1968: Mile, Indoor 1968: Two-Mile, Indoor 1969: Mile, Indoor

There is perhaps no other athlete more associated with Kansas distance running than Jim Ryun. His legend extends far beyond his KU accomplishments. A three-time Olympian (1964, 1968 and 1972), Ryun captured silver at the 1968 games in Mexico City in the 1,500 meters, duplicating the performance of former Jayhawk Glenn Cunningham at the 1936 games. During his tenure at KU from 1966-69, Ryun broke five world records, including the world outdoor mile record twice, and also claimed five individual NCAA titles. Before attending Kansas, Ryun became the first high school runner to complete the mile run in under four minutes. In addition, his national high school mile record of 3:55.3, set over 30 years ago, still stands today for events completed in the U.S. Inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1982, Ryun’s statue at Rim Rock Farm sits atop the Jim Ryun Skyline Bend and is among the first statues visitors see when turning into Rim Rock Farm.

Wes Santee (1952-55) A legendary Kansas Jayhawk, Wes Santee’s contributions to Kansas cross country and track and field are among the bedrocks of the tradition-rich heritage. Santee, an Ashland, Kan., native, captured the NCAA championship in 1953, giving KU the individual crown for the third time in four years. In fact, Santee’s All-America performance at the 1953 NCAA Championships propelled the Kansas cross country team to the NCAA title, the only cross country team in KU’s history to achieve the feat. Santee also excelled at the conference level, claiming back-to-back league championships in 1952 and 1953 and helping his team collect two Big Seven Conference championships (1952 and 1953). Santee was a member of the 1952 U.S. SANTEE’S ACCOLADES Olympic team in the 5,000 meters. • 1953 NCAA Individual Cross Country Champion He broke three world records while at • Member of 1953 NCAA Cross Country Championship Team Kansas, twice setting new marks in the • 1952 and 1953 Big Seven Conference Cross Country Champion indoor mile run (1954, 4:04.9; 1955, • 1952 Olympian in 5,000-meter run 4:03.8) and in the outdoor 1,500 • Broke three world records while at Kansas meters (1954, 3:42.8). Herb Semper (1949-52) A member of the Kansas cross country program during its golden era under the direction of head coach Bill Easton, Herb Semper firmly established his mark in the lore of Kansas cross country. Semper became the first Jayhawk to win an NCAA championship, prevailing in 1950 and then again in 1951. He remains the only runner in KU history to win two cross country individual national championships. Under Easton’s guidance, Semper was a member of two Big Seven Conference championship teams (1950 and 1951) and was a two-time Big Seven individual champion (1950 and 1951). Semper is also a member of the KU Hall of Fame. Semper’s excellence extended to the Kansas track and field team as well. A four-time Big Seven Conference champion in the two-mile run (1950-52 indoor; 1950 outdoor), Semper was a two-time outdoor AllAmerican after back-to-back third-place finishes in the two-mile run at the NCAA Championships. Semper’s statue at Rim Rock Farm is surrounded by three ponds (Teardrop Pond, Jayhawk Pond and Pat’s Little Pond) on the northeast portion of the course. SEMPER’S ACCOLADES • 1950 and 1951 NCAA Cross Country Champion • 1950 and 1951 Big Seven Conference Champion

Bob Timmons (1968-88) Bob Timmons is to Kansas Cross Country what Phog Allen is to Kansas Basketball. The man who coached KU to four NCAA Track and Field Championships is perhaps most noted for bringing Jim Ryun to Lawrence. Timmons coached Ryun at Wichita East High School until 1964, when he became an assistant at KU for a year under Bill Easton. Ryun then followed Timmons to Kansas where he continued to thrive under Timmons’ coaching. Timmons was an 11-time NCAA District V Coach of the Year and was the 1975 U.S. Track and Field Coaches Association National Coach of the Year. At the helm of the KU track and field program, he led the Jayhawks to 13 indoor league crowns and 14 outdoor titles. In cross country, Timmons guided John Lawson to the 1965 NCAA Individual Championship. In 1970, Timmons and his wife, Pat, purchased land just north of Lawrence. In 1974 that property became known as Rim Rock Farm, and it has been home of the Jayhawk Cross Country teams ever since. Rim Rock Farm is now known as one of the best and toughest courses in the nation and is a credit to Timmons’ vision and passion for cross country. The annual Bob Timmons Classic is held each September in his honor on the course he put so much work into. During his career, Timmons coached 77 AllAmericans, 24 NCAA champions, 16 worldrecord holders and seven Olympians. Timmons is a member of the Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of Fame, the KU Hall of Fame and the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.

Home Course

RIM Rock Farm The University of Kansas hosts its home cross country meets at historic Rim Rock Farm, northwest of Lawrence. Before being donated to KU in 2004, the property was owned by former head track and field and cross country coach Bob Timmons and has been the home of the Jayhawks since the 1974 season. Any runner or spectator will say that the course is quite challenging and unique. In addition to having two covered bridges as part of the course, Rim Rock Farm also features specific hills, turns and other landmarks that are named after former Jayhawk greats. Dispersed throughout the course are silhouette statues of seven legendary Jayhawk distance runners including Herb Semper, Al Frame, John Lawson and Olympians Billy Mills, Wes Santee, Glenn Cunningham and Jim Ryun. Rim Rock Farm was the vision of Coach Timmons, who, during his 23-year tenure, won two cross country conference championships. “There is something for everyone at Rim Rock Farm,” Timmons said. “Parents are afforded the opportunity to walk around throughout the course and find all the wonderful places to observe. Spectators can catch the runners three or four times throughout the event and explore the different elevations. And the runners can navigate a course that will challenge them with its obstacles and amaze them with its beauty. That’s what makes Rim Rock Farm so exciting.” In the fall of 2006, Rim Rock Farm played host to its first Big 12 Cross Country Conference Championships. Rim Rock Farm hosted the Big Eight Cross Country Championships in 1983, 1991 and 1995, and was also the site of the 1998 NCAA Division I and II Cross Country Championships as well as numerous Kansas high school state meets.

Rim Rock Farm is home of the Jayhawks, but also home to former Kansas runner Steve Heffernan. After donating the course to KU, Timmons made sure that the cozy house in the middle of the farm had a full-time tenant. Heffernan is currently responsible for the farm’s upkeep, while also serving as head coach of cross country and track and field at Lawrence Free State High School.

traditions THE ROCK CHALK CHANT

The Rock Chalk Chant has been the battle cry of KU fans for more than 80 years. This strange, traditional chant, which is among the most famous of all college cheers, was started by E.H.S. Bailey, a professor of chemistry. Bailey wanted a cheer for his Science Club. Returning from a convention in Wichita, Bailey and some associates patterned a yell after the rhythmic cadence of their train rolling along the tracks. On May 21, 1886, Bailey submitted the cheer to his club. Before the University adopted the cheer in 1897, it consisted of “Rah, Rah, Jayhawk, KU” being repeated three times. An English professor soon suggested that “Rock Chalk” be substituted for “Rah, Rah” because it rhymed with Jayhawk. “Rock Chalk” was also symbolic of the chalky limestone formations found on Mount Oread. Teddy Roosevelt once said the Rock Chalk chant was the best he had ever heard.

CAMPANILE HILL

Campanile Hill forms the picturesque backdrop for Memorial Stadium. On a sunny fall Saturday, the “Hill” is transformed into a congregating place for watching Jayhawk football, sunning and barbequing. Potter Lake, just to the southeast of Memorial Stadium and at the bottom of Campanile Hill, adds to the beauty of the Kansas campus.

WAVING THE WHEAT

Since the early days of KU sports, it has been a ritual of Jayhawk fans to “wave the wheat” following every Kansas scoring drive. The ritual consists of fans waving their arms in the air, an activity which, when done by a large crowd, resembles a breezy Kansas wheat field.

THE NICKNAME

During the Civil War a regiment raised by Kansas Governor Charles Robinson called itself the “Independent Mounted Jayhawks” (later officially the First Kansas Calvary and then the Seventh Kansas Regiment). By the end of the Civil War the word Jayhawk was associated with the spirit of camaraderie and the courageous fighting qualities that characterized efforts to keep Kansas a free state. By 1886, the University of Kansas had adopted the mythical bird as part of the KU yell. When the university’s football team first took the field in 1890, it seemed only natural that they should be called Jayhawkers. Few colleges and universities have such a meaningful symbol, one so deeply associated with the struggles of the people who founded them.

THE FIGHT SONG

George “Dumpy” Bowles, a student with the class of 1912, longed to make a great contribution to the KU spirit, but wasn’t athletic enough to do historic deeds on the athletic field. He turned to music and produced some outstanding student musical shows. A song in one of these shows was “I’m a Jayhawk.” Written in 1912, it was dormant until 1920 when a growth in school spirit brought out “I’m a Jayhawk” once more. The song contributed to the raising of funds to build both the KU football stadium and student union as World War I memorials. The 1926 glee club made it known nationally.

THE SCHOOL COLORS

The University of Kansas colors, crimson and blue, used since the early 1890s, are not the colors originally adopted by the university Board of Regents in the 1860s. The Regents had decided to adopt the Michigan colors, maize and sky blue. Maize and blue were used at early oratorical meets, and they may have been used when Kansas competed in rowing in the middle 1880s. However, when football came upon the scene in 1890, the student backers wanted to use Harvard crimson as the athletic color in honor of Col. John J. McCook, a Harvard man, who had given money for an athletic field at KU. That field ran east and west in the proximity of where the north bowl of Memorial Stadium stands on the Kansas campus today. Some Yale men were on the faculty, and they demanded the Yale blue be included. The rooters rallied forth to allow crimson and blue on their team. No one fought to retain the original colors, and the vivid deeper tone crimson and blue became generally used. Finally, in May 1896, the KU Athletic Board adopted crimson and blue as the official team colors for the university.

THE ALMA MATER

In 1891, professor George Barlow Penny searched for a school song for the Glee and Mandolin Club to sing on its tour through Kansas to Denver and back. No one responded with an original song in answer to his appeals. Just before departure, he thought of the Cornell song “Far Above Cayuga’s Waters.” Hastily changing a few words, he gave it to the glee club men to sing on the trip. He did not expect the song to be used after their return, but “Crimson and the Blue” still goes on. The music is not Cornell’s but an old English folk tune, “Annie Lisle.”

The Big 12 Conference has established a consistent level of national success on the field and in the classroom as it enters its 14th season in 2009-10. Since it began play in 1996-97, the Conference can boast of 34 team crowns and over 400 individual NCAA Championships. The success continued through 2008-09 as Texas A&M captured national titles in men’s golf as well as men’s and women’s outdoor track & field. The league placed two teams in the Bowl Championship Series for the fifth time and had a team play for the BCS National Championship for the sixth season. In addition, two volleyball teams advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Championship and Oklahoma played in the Women’s Final Four. Missouri softball and Texas baseball punched tickets to the College World Series. Among individual honors, Sally Kipyego (Texas Tech) became the first NCAA Division I female or male runner to win three consecutive cross country national championships. She was named the Honda Award winner for the third season as the nation’s top female cross country athlete, becoming just the eighth athlete to win the award three times in any sport. Jenny Barringer (Colorado) claimed the Honda Award for Track & Field while Oleksandr Nedovyesov (Oklahoma State) was named ITA/Campbell’s Tennis Player of the Year. Over the past five seasons a total of 13 NCAA trophies have been hoisted by Big 12 institutions, with at least one national crown won in all but one year for the Conference, including each of the past 12 seasons. The Big 12 and its member institutions are committed to a competitive environment where sportsmanship and fair play take center stage. Whether on the field, in the classroom, or within the community the student-athletes, administrators, coaches and game officials of the Big 12 support the highest ideals in sportsmanship. Big 12 student-athletes also do well in garnering national academic recognition. Sarah Pavan (Nebraska) was named Academic All-America of the Year in volleyball in 2006 and 2007 by ESPN The Magazine and College Sports Information Directors of America with a 4.0 gradepoint average in Biochemistry. She also won the national academic honor presented for all sports in 2006-07 and was named recipient of the prestigious 2006-07 Honda-Broderick Award as Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year. She is the first athlete since the Big 12 was formed to earn the accolade. In its history, the conference has over 330 academic honorees, averaging more than 25 each season. The Big 12 can boast of other stories that combine on and off the field success. Patience Knight (Texas Tech) was the recipient of the Honda Inspiration Award in 2008, given to an outstanding female college athlete who overcomes adversity to excel in her sport. She was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in 2007, but rebounded to win All-America honors at the 2008 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Competitive excellence, scholarship and sportsmanship are all equal components of the Big 12 philosophy. All-Big 12 teams and Academic All-Big 12 squads are recognized for each sport at the end of their respective seasons. At the end of each academic year, the Conference honors its top male and female student-athletes with the Big 12 Athlete of the Year and Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year awards. Institutions can also nominate student-athletes for the prestigious Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarships at the end of each academic year. A total of 225 scholars have received over 1.3 million in postgraduate financial aid through the first 13 years of the program. The Big 12 sponsors 21 sports. Men’s squads include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and wrestling. Women’s teams are fielded in basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball. The conference is made up of 12 institutions that have shared many traditional rivalries throughout their histories. Member schools include - Baylor University, University of Colorado, Iowa State University, University of Kansas, Kansas State University, University of Missouri, University of Nebraska, University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University, University of Texas, Texas A&M University and Texas Tech University. The institutions created a league that encompasses seven states, over 45 million people and television households in 18 of the top 100 markets within its geographic footprint. The conference conducts championships for 20 of its 21 sports. Each championship helps to determine teams and/or individuals that will represent the Conference in national postseason competition. The winner of the Big 12 football championship game earns the league’s berth into the prestigious Bowl Championship Series. In the last several years the Big 12 has increased its bowl agreements and expanded television opportunities for all sports through contracts with ABC/ESPN and FSN. Most recently, the league renewed and expanded its multi-year arrangement with ABC/ESPN, Inc. The new contract began in 2008-09. In its first 13 years, the Conference has distributed more than $1.1 billion to its 12 member institutions. The Big 12 staff administers to over 4,600 student-athletes in 21 sports. The conference office is headquartered in Irving, Texas
