Since taking the reins of the track and field and cross country teams at the University of Kansas, Stanley Redwine has found success in leaps and bounds. As he enters his seventh year at the helm, Redwine, his staff and his teams continue to establish their marks in the lore of Jayhawk history, shattering school records and adding several All-Americans to the illustrious luminaries of Kansas’ storied past. Judging by his results, both as a coach and as an athlete, this path looks to continue into the future. In Redwine’s first six seasons, 22 Kansas athletes have achieved 40 All-America honors, and the men’s and women’s teams have combined to set more than 50 school records and crack the KU all-time top-five list in more than 60 events. At Kansas, he has coached three individuals to national championships in five different events. As a result of their outstanding performances, Redwine’s 2001 and 2002 men’s track and field teams were enshrined into the KU Hall of Fame after back-to-back eighth place finishes at the NCAA Championships. The 2005-06 academic year was especially rewarding for Redwine, his staff and his teams. Under his tutelage, the men’s cross country team recorded its best results at both the Big 12 Conference Championships and the NCAA Championships in more than a decade, finishing third and 12th, respectively. Additionally, Redwine and his staff mentored Benson Chesang to back-to-back Big 12 Championships in cross country, the first time a Jayhawk had accomplished the feat since the 1950s. The women’s cross country team’s eighth-place finish at the Big 12 Conference championships demonstrated the continued improvement of the program. Finally, Redwine and his staff saw the teams’ success translate to the classroom, as six cross country women and three men were named to the Academic All-Big 12 teams. On the track, Redwine’s squads continued to display the success and tradition associated with Kansas track and field. Redwine and his staff oversaw the development of Sheldon Battle, a six-time All-American in the indoor shot put, weight throw and the outdoor shot put. For his accomplishments, Battle was named 2006 Division I Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Year for the Midwest Region. In total, the 2006 track and field season delivered Redwine and his staff six more All-America performers in 10 events. The men’s indoor track and field team finished sixth at the Big 12 championships, a two-place improvement from 2005, while the women’s team finished 10th. At the Big 12 outdoor championships, Redwine and his staff guided the women’s team to an eighth-place finish and the men’s team to ninth. In addition, Redwine and his staff saw three of his competitors embark to the USATF championships in June, where Stephanie Horton won the bronze in the USATF Junior Championships. Just as with cross country, track and field’s success carried over to the classroom, as 26 members of the two teams were named to the Academic All-Big 12 teams. In 2005, Redwine and his staff oversaw Battle, Brooklyn Hann, Amy Linnen, Jeremy Mims and Ekaterina Sultanova garner All-America accolades in outdoor track. The indoor season saw the women finish seventh in the conference, while the men came in eighth. Also in 2005, Coach Redwine and his staff guided Linnen to NCAA and Big 12 Championships in the pole vault. In the 2005 outdoor season, the Jayhawk men had a fourth-place performance at the Big 12 championships and then finished 25th nationally as the women took sixth place at the outdoor conference meet and 29th nationally. The summer of 2005 also saw the Jayhawks claim success on the international stage as Paul Hefferon captured silver in the 5000-meter race at the Junior Pan Am Games in Windsor, Ontario. Redwine's 2004 men's cross country team tied its Big 12 and regional finishes from the previous season, finishing fourth at both meets. The 2004 women's team tied its 10th-place Big 12 performance from the 2003 season and finished 16th at the NCAA Midwest regionals. In addition to the first of his two Big 12 championships, Redwine and his staff saw Chesang become the first KU cross country All-American in a decade with a seventh-place finish at the NCAA championships. During the 2003 season, Redwine guided the women’s indoor track and field team to a fourth-place finish at the Big 12 Conference championships and a sixth-place finish at the outdoor championships. On the men’s side, Redwine and his staff helped develop Leo Bookman as he became the indoor and outdoor national champion in the 200-meter dash, a feat he would repeat at the indoor championships in 2004. Redwine’s second season at KU was very prosperous. In 2002, he produced eight Big 12 champions, 21 total NCAA qualifiers and two individual national titlists. The men's indoor team finished seventh in the conference and eighth in the nation, while the women ended the indoor season sixth in the conference. The Jayhawk men gave a fourth-place performance at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships and then finished 21st nationally as the women took eighth place at the conference meet. Also in 2002, Redwine and his staff guided seven athletes to a total of eight All-America titles, while the men’s squad set four outdoor and seven indoor school records and one all-time collegiate record. Finally, five athletes were named USATF Junior All-Americans, including one USATF junior champion. In his first season at Kansas, Redwine and his staff made their mark quickly, turning what some considered a rebuilding project into a budding powerhouse. Redwine mentored seven different athletes to a total of nine All-America awards and had three athletes qualify for the USATF indoor championships, two athletes compete at the USATF outdoor championships, two athletes set a total of three national records, one athlete compete at the IAAF World Championships in Edmonton, Canada and two athletes competed at the World University Games in Beijing, China. Both his 2000 cross country teams improved at the Big 12 Conference championships as well, as the men placed sixth and the women improved from 11th to eighth. Before Redwine was selected as head coach at Kansas on May 25, 2000, he had a six-year stint as head coach at the University of Tulsa. At Tulsa, Redwine's athletes broke more than 70 school records, most on multiple occasions. In many events, Redwine's athletes completely rewrote the Golden Hurricane's all-time top 10 performance lists. His success at Tulsa was not, however, limited just to the school record book. Under Redwine, Tulsa athletes achieved numerous USA and NCAA rankings in many different events, both men and women. The list of events includes the women's 4x400m (3:36.93 outdoor, 3:40.14 indoor), women's 400m (53.12 outdoor, 54.11 indoor), women's 3000m (9:34.45), women's 5000m (16:42.24), men's mile (3:59.29), men's 1500m (3:42.43), men's 800m (1:47.69), men's DMR (9:37.95), women's 4x800m (8:59.16) and men's long jump (24-11 3/4). At Tulsa, Redwine produced 11 NCAA qualifiers and the school's first ever All-American. In addition, two athletes qualified for the USA

During Redwine's tenure, Tulsa athletes won several conference individual championships and contributed to the top team conference finishes ever for a Tulsa team. Prior to his appointment at Tulsa in 1994, Redwine spent 11 years as an assistant coach at the University of Arkansas, one of the premier track and field programs in the nation. During his tenure at UA, the Razorbacks captured nine consecutive NCAA Championships and 22 titles from 1985 through 1994 in both track and field and cross country. He helped produce 14 All-Americans and two NCAA champions in hurdle and sprint events. Among those AllAmericans are two-time NCAA indoor and outdoor champion in the 400m, Calvin Davis; three-time NCAA champion in the 400m and 500m, Robbie Haley; and seven-time All-American sprinter, Jimmy French. Before becoming a coach at Arkansas, Redwine placed his name in the Razorback history books as a 400m, 600y and 800m runner from 1980-83. Alexa, Stanley, Jacqueline and Stanley Jr. Redwine was a four-time All-American and was named UA's Outstanding Track Athlete all four of his years in Fayetteville. During his freshman season, he captured the Southwest Conference Championship in the indoor 600-yard run (1:10.52) and was a member of the outdoor conference champion 1,600m relay team. The next year, Redwine once again became the 600-yard run champion, improving his time to 1:09.97. As a senior, he was a three-time conference champion in the 800m run (1:50.15), 880-yard run (1:50.96) and the mile relay (3:14.69). Redwine still ranks among the Razorbacks' top 10 in six events, which includes anchoring the school's record-setting sprint medley relay team (3:15.10) at the Penn Relays in 1983, which ranks as the second-best time in history. Redwine owns the fourth-best time in school history in the 800m at 1:46.13. In addition, he also ranks fourth in the outdoor 400m dash and was a participant in several top-10 relay performances for the Razorbacks. He still holds the fourth, seventh and eighth-best times in the outdoor 1600m relay record book and the second, sixth and ninth-best times in the outdoor DMR. For his achievements, Redwine was inducted into the University of Arkansas Hall of Honor. Professionally, Redwine retired from competition in 1996 after he finished fifth in the 800m at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Atlanta, Ga. He was a U.S. Olympic Trial qualifier five consecutive times from 1980 to 1996 and was a two-time silver medalist in the 800m run in the Goodwill Games in 1986 and 1994. He also won two bronze medals at the Pan American Games in 1983 and 1987. Redwine was also a World Championship Track Team member in 1985, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993 and a two-time USA 800m champion. His most recent honor was being selected by USA Track and Field to serve as an assistant coach to Team USA in the XIIVth Pan American Games that were held in 2003 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He coached the men's endurance events under Team USA men's and women's head coaches Fred Harvey of Arizona and Monica Gary of Purdue. Redwine was also inducted into the Arkansas State Hall of Fame in 2003. Redwine earned his bachelor's degree in administrative management from Arkansas in 1985. He and his wife, Jacqueline, have three children: Crysta (24), Stanley Jr. (21), and Alexa (16).
DOUG CLARK Assistant Coach Seventh Year At Kansas Central Missouri State, ‘81 Doug Clark begins his seventh year at the University of Kansas as assistant cross country and distance coach for the track team. Clark came to KU after six successful seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Tulsa. Clark has worked closely with head coach Stanley Redwine throughout his career, coaching alongside him at both Arkansas and Tulsa. In his six years with the Kansas cross country team, Clark has helped produce eight All-Big 12 athletes, five NCAA qualifiers since 2000 (Mark Menefee, Charlie Gruber, Benson Chesang, Paul Hefferon and Cameron Schwehr) and the highest conference team finishes since the introduction of the Big 12. In addition, eight of his cross country athletes have gone on to win a total of 10 All-America honors in track. Clark also played an instrumental role in Benson Chesang's 2004 All-American cross country campaign. In 2005, Clark’s guidance helped spur the men’s cross country team to third-place at the Big 12 Championships, a third-place finish at the MIdwest Regional Championships and a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, the squad’s best performance since 1994. During Clark's tenure at Tulsa, he helped produce the first-ever NCAA qualifier and first-ever Western Athletic Conference champion. In addition, Tulsa's men's and women's teams achieved their highest finishes in school history at both the region and conference levels, while several individuals earned all-conference and all-region honors. Prior to Tulsa, Clark was an assistant coach at the University of Arkansas from 1988-93. During that period, Arkansas won four NCAA team championships and produced multiple All-Americans. Clark was an NCAA qualifier at Southwest Missouri State in the late 1970's. He also qualified for the 1980 U.S. Olympic Trials in the marathon with a time of 2:17.40. Clark was the top masters runner in Oklahoma from 1996 to 2000, posting times of 14:58 (5k), 31:41 (10k) and 25:45 (8k) during that period. In the summer of 2004, Clark traveled to Athens to coach former Jayhawk Charlie Gruber in the 1500m race at the Olympics. He still competes and clocked a 15:48 5k time during the summer of 2002.

Seven KU teams posted 3.0 grade-point averages or better and 205 student-athletes on active rosters (51 percent) posted a 3.0 GPA or higher, including 40 with perfect 4.0 GPA's; = The football team won the 2005 Fort Worth Bowl and has participated in a bowl game in two of the last three years; = The men's basketball team reached the Elite Eight of the 2004 NCAA Championship and has won the last two Big 12 Conference regular-season championships, as well as the 2006 Big 12 tournament title; = The women's volleyball team has appeared in three consecutive NCAA tournaments, reaching the second round in 2003 and 2004; = The women's soccer team has appeared in two NCAA tournaments, reaching the Sweet 16 in 2003; = The softball team won the Big 12 Championship in 2006 and reached the NCAA tournament for the second straight season; = The baseball team won the Big 12 Championship in 2006 and reached the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1994; = The women's basketball team reached the 2006 Women's National Invitation Tournament, its first postseason appearance since 2000; = Nineteen KU student-athletes qualified for the 2006 NCAA indoor and outdoor track and field championships, with 10 of those earning All-American honors. Kansas Athletics fundraising has reached unprecedented levels. Under Perkins, KU's $27-million athletics budget has grown to more than $40 million. That fundraising, including landmark apparel and corporate-partner contracts, has resulted in greater services for KU coaches and student-athletes, and numerous upgrades in KU's athletics facilities: = The Booth Family Hall of Athletics, which opened in January 2006 in Allen Fieldhouse, celebrates the tradition and history of Kansas Athletics; = The spirit and aura of Allen Fieldhouse has been enhanced by renovations that were completed prior to the 2005-06 season, include freshly painted bleachers, new windows, new lighting and sound systems, and a new center-hung scoreboard, which includes a large, state-of-the-art video board; = The baseball complex now includes an indoor hitting facility and a new scoreboard, complete with a large, state-of-the-art video board; = With funding secured, construction of a new football facility and practice fields adjacent to Memorial Stadium will begin shortly; = A new Aquatic Rehabilitation Center houses three Hydroworx pools that enhance rehabilitation efforts under the guidance and super vision of the University of Kansas Sports Medicine Staff. Perkins has served on many NCAA, Big 12 Conference and other prestigious committees. His current NCAA obligations include the Basketball Issues Committee. At the conference level, Perkins currently serves as Chair of the Big 12 Board of Athletics Directors and as a member of the Big 12 Television Committee In spring 2005 he was named to the Board of Directors of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Additionally, he is a member of the Gatorade Board of Directors. At Connecticut (1990-2003), Perkins was instrumental in guiding UConn athletics to impressive growth - athletically, academically and financially. His leadership influenced six NCAA Division I National Championships. He was rewarded in 2000 as the inaugural winner of the National Athletic Director of the Year Award as selected by Street & Smith's Sports Business Journal, in conjunction with the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). A native of Chelsea, Mass., Perkins was inducted into his high school Hall of Fame in 1989. A highly recruited basketball player, he played at the University of Iowa (1965-67) for Hall of Fame coach and KU graduate Ralph Miller. Perkins earned his undergraduate degree there in 1967. Perkins served as Director of Athletics (1969-80) and head basketball coach (1969-79) at the University of South Carolina Aiken as that institution grew from a junior college to a four-year institution. He received his master's degree in education (1975) from the University of South Carolina. Perkins delivered the commencement address and received an honorary Doctor of Education degree at USC Aiken in May 2005. Perkins also has served as athletics director at the University of Maryland and Wichita State University, and associate director of athletics at the University of Pennsylvania. Perkins is married to the former Gwen Flaum. Like Lew, Gwen earned an undergraduate degree from Iowa and a master's degree in education from the University of South Carolina. They have two daughters (Amy, husband Brandon Macneill; Holly, husband Tom Halligan) and two granddaughters (Caroline and Alexandra Macneill).

2006 Outlook Cross Country Ready to Lead the Pack The 2006 season looks to be an especially promising for the Kansas men’s and women’s cross country teams. The men’s team is coming off its best finish at the NCAA championships (12th) and NCAA Midwest Regionals (third) in more than a decade. Although the women’s team lost several seniors to graduation, it blends a host of veterans with an influx of new talent to improve on last year’s results. Head coach Stanley Redwine, entering his seventh year at the helm of both squads, is enthusiastic about the possibilities. “We’re always hungry to do better and I believe that both squads can achieve their goals if they take care of busines,” Redwine said. “Our women’s team has experience in the front and a crop of newcomers that can contribute immediately.” “It was an honor for myself and the staff to see the men’s team perform so well in 2005. I believe the team is excited about what the season has in store for us.” The 2006 season will be especially memorable for both squads because KU will be hosting the Big 12 championships at Rim Rock Farm, the first Big 12 Championship hosted by the Uninversity in Lawrence. In the 2005 campaign, the men’s team placed three members on the All-Big 12 team and five runners on the all-region team. The 2006 season looks to be just as promising as the top five runners return and welcome a host of newcomers capable of earning valuable points immediately. Leading the charge for the men is senior Benson Chesang. As the defending back-to-back Big 12 champion, the first Jayhawk to do so since Al Frame in 1954-55, the Eldama Ravine, Kenya, native will look to become the first Kansas runner to register three consecutive conference championships. Additionally in 2005, Chesang, a threetime All-Big 12 runner, was the top finisher for the team in four of the five races in which he competed. Teaming with the Chesang as catalysts for the team’s aspirations in 2006 are a pair of talented juniors, Paul Hefferon and Colby Wissel, who both earned All-Big 12 and all-region recognition. Hefferon, an Overland, Park, Kan. native, recorded his best result at the NCAA Midwest Regionals, where he led all Jayhawks with an eighth-place finish. He also finished well at the Big 12 meet, scoring valuable points for the Jayhawks by placing 13th overall. Wissel displayed tremendous consistency throughout the season. He started the year off with a flurry, winning both the Bob Timmons Invitational and the KSU/KU Dual Meet. His 10th-place finish at the Big 12 Championships
and 15th-place finish at the NCAA Midwest regionals helped the team score its best results at both events in over a decade. Seniors Erik Sloan and Tyler Kelly look to conclude their careers at KU by building on the team’s success in 2005. Both were named to the all-region team after netting top25 performances. Sloan was one of five Jayhawks to score points at the Big 12 Championships, placing 20th overall and and 22nd at the Midwest Regionals. Kelly brought home an 18th-place finish at the Midwest Regionals and finished second at the Bob Timmons Invitational. Rounding out the returners for the Jayhawks are senior Matt French, who redshirted in 2005, junior Patrick McGowan and sophomores Victor Chesang and Levi Huseman, who all will be vying for a spot in the top seven. On the women’s team, their eighth-place finish in the Big 12 represented their second-best result during Redwine’s tenure. The team is led by senior, Laura Major and redshirt junior Melissa Moody. Throughout the 2005 season, Major never finished outside Kansas’ top-three finishers and scored a seasonbest result at the KSU/KU Dual meet, where she finished the 6k run in 19:49.6. Moody begins her third season at Kansas after spending her first season competing at Southeast Missouri and looks to continue her cross country career with additional strong finishes. Both were members of the 2005 Academic All-Big 12 First Team. Closing in on the heels of the seniors are five juniors who embark on their first season as upperclassmen: Connie Abbott, Haley Harbert, Alicia McGregor, Lisa Morrisey and Melissa O’Rourke. Of the group, Morrisey and Abbott found the most success in 2005. Abbott was the team’s top finisher at the Bob Timmons Invitational, placing seventh and she also joined Major and Moody as a member of the Academic All-Big 12 First Team. Morrisey left her mark on the season toward the end of the campaign, recording the team’s top finish at the final three events of the season, capped off with a 43rd-place finish at the NCAA Midwest Regionals. Harbert and McGregor also bring consistency to the team, averaging 23:27, respectively, and 23:19 in the five 6k races during the 2005 season. Joining the upperclassmen are a threesome of sophomores in Megan James and Bridget Moran. All three got a taste of Big 12 competition and look forward to solidifying the future for the Jayhawks.

RIM ROCK FARM Rim Rock Farm is home to many unique features, including a pair of covered bridges and statues of legendary Jayhawks dispersed throughout the course.
Donated to KU in 2004, Rim Rock Farm has been home to Kansas cross country since 1974, making the 2006 season the 33rd year KU has competed at the course. Rim Rock Farm represents the vision of former KU men’s cross country coach Bob Timmons, who, during his 23-year tenure, won two cross country conference championships.

"There is something for everyone at Rim Rock Farm," Timmons said. "Parents are afforded the opportunity to walk around throughout the course and find all the wonderful places to observe. Spectators can catch the runners three or four times throughout the event and explore the different elevations. And the runners can navigate a course that will challenge them with its obstacles and amaze them with its beauty. That's what makes Rim Rock Farm so exciting."
Rim Rock Farm was also host to the 1998 Division I & II National Championships, which coincided with the course’s 25th anniversary.
Directions to Rim Rock Farm -- Those traveling to Rim Rock from the Kansas Turnpike are advised to take the East Lawrence exit and then travel north on Kansas Highway 24/59 (which curves to the west) for approximately 2.5 miles before turning right (north) on the asphalt road at the Midland Store. Approximately 2.5 miles later, watch for an abandoned natural gas pump station on the right and make a left turn (west) at that point onto a gravel road. About .25 mile ahead, make a right turn and follow the gravel road approximately one and .33 miles (north) to the course. THE STORIES BEHIND THE STATUES GLENN CUNNINGHAM: One of the earliest cross country greats to don the crimson and blue was Glenn Cunningham. A member of the KU Hall of Fame, Cunningham was a two-time Big Six Conference cross country champion, capturing the league crown in 1931 and 1932. Cunningham also excelled in track and field while at Kansas, breaking the world record in the indoor 1,500 meters (3:53.3) in 1934 and both the indoor mile (4:08.4) in 1932 and the outdoor mile (4:06.7) in 1933. During his tenure on the track at KU, he served as team captain in 1934 and won 12 conference championships: four indoor (1932-34, mile run and 1934, 880- yard run) and eight outdoor (1932-34: mile run; 1932-34: 880yard run; 1933-34: two-mile run). In 1932 and 1933, Cunningham was the NCAA champion in the mile run, earning All-America accolades in the process. A two-time Olympian in the 1,500 meters (1932, 1936), Cunningham won the silver medal at the 1936 summer games in Berlin. In 1974, he became one of the first inductees into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. In accordance with his early success, Cunningham’s statue is located near the start of the course and the finish line at Rim Rock Farm is affectionately known as the Glenn Cunningham Finish.
HERB SEMPER: A member of the Kansas cross country program during its golden era under the direction of Head Coach Bill Easton, Herb Semper firmly established his mark in the lore of Kansas cross country. Semper became the first Jayhawk to win an NCAA championship, prevailing in 1950 and 1951. He remains the only Jayhawk in KU history to win two cross country individual national championships. Under Easton’s guidance, Semper was a member of two Big Seven Conference championship teams (1950 and 1951) and was a two-time Big Seven individual champion (1950 and 1951). Semper is also a member of the KU Hall of Fame. Semper’s excellence extended to the Kansas track and field team as well. A four-time Big Seven Conference champion in the two-mile run (1950-52 indoor; 1950 outdoor), Semper was a two-time outdoor All-American after back-toback third-place finishes in the two-mile run at the NCAA championships. Semper’s statue at Rim Rock Farm is surrounded by three ponds (Teardrop Pond, Jayhawk Pond and Pat’s Little Pond) on the northeast portion of the course.

THE STORIES BEHIND THE STATUES WES SANTEE:
A legendary Kansas Jayhawk, Wes Santee’s contributions to Kansas cross country and track and field are among the bedrocks of the tradition-rich heritage. Santee, an Ashland, Kan. native, captured the NCAA championship in 1953, giving KU the individual crown for the third time in four years. In fact, Santee’s All-America performance at the 1953 NCAA Championships helped propel the Kansas cross country team to the NCAA championship, the only cross country team in KU’s history to achieve the feat. Santee also excelled at the conference level, claiming back-to-back league championships in 1952 and 1953 and helping his team collect two Big Seven Conference championships (1952 & 1953). Santee was a member of the 1952 U.S. Olympic team in the 5,000 meters and broke three world records while at Kansas, twice setting new marks in the indoor mile run (1954, 4:04.9; 1955, 4:03.8) and in the outdoor 1,500 meters (1954, 3:42.8). A two-time outdoor AllAmerican, Santee won the 5,000 meters in 1952 and the mile run in 1953 to garner the recognition. Santee collected seven conference championships: three indoor (1952-54, mile run; 1953, 880 yards) and four outdoor (1952-54, mile run; 1953, 880 yards). A member of the KU Hall of Fame, Santee’s statue at Rim Rock Farm can be found at the start of the second mile of the course, west of the Shady Glen.
AL FRAME: A teammate of Wes Santee, Al Frame carved out an equally impressive cross country and track and field career while attending the University of Kansas. A member of the 1953 NCAA championship team, Frame won the individual NCAA championship in 1954. Under the tutelage of Head Coach Bill Easton, Frame was a member of three Big Seven Conference championship teams while at KU. He also won the Big Seven individual championship twice, netting the accomplishment in back-to-back years (1954 and 1955) and was the last Jayhawk to do so until Benson Chesang won the Big 12 championships in consecutive years (2004 & 2005). A 1954 and 1955 All-America honoree, Frame, like so many before him, also found success on the track and field team. During his time on the team, Frame captured six Big Seven Conference championships: four indoor (1954, two-mile run; 1955-56, mile run; 1956, 880-yard run) and two outdoor (1955, mile run; 1955, two-mile run). A third-place finish at the outdoor NCAA championships in 1955 added All-America status to Frame’s resume. A member of the KU Hall of Fame, Frame’s statue at Rim Rock Farm is located just north of Pat’s Little Pond on the third mile of the course.

THE STORIES BEHIND THE STATUES BILLY MILLS:
Gold Medalist. All-American. Hall-ofFamer. Kansas Jayhawk. All describe Billy Mills, who made his impact on the Kansas tradition with golden footprints. A two-time All-American (1958 and 1959), Mills captured the 1960 Big Eight Cross Country Championship. He was also a part of two team Big Eight Conference titles while at KU (1958 and 1959) under Head Coach Bill Easton. However, Mills’ legacy at KU extends far beyond the borders of the Sunflower state. A member of the 1964 United States Olympic team, Mills won the gold medal in the 10,000 meters and set a new Olympic record. In dramatic fashion, Mills came from behind on the last lap to win the race in Tokyo and is still the only American to win the event. Mills’ success was also evident on the track and field team, as he set a world record in the six-mile run in 1965 (27:11.6). He won two Big Eight Conference championships, capturing both the indoor and outdoor championships in 1961 and was a member of both the 1959 and 1960 NCAA championship track teams. Inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1976, Mills’ iconic statue, in which his arms are raised high, is placed on the last straightaway of the course, saluting the runners for their perseverance and will to compete. In fact, the pose of Billy’s silhouette is identical to the one he struck upon winning the gold medal at the 1964 Olympics.

As the last Kansas cross country runner to win the NCAA championships, John Lawson’s career signals yet another chapter in the golden era of Kansas cross country. In 1965, Lawson pulled off an impressive sweep, capturing both the Big Eight Conference championship and the NCAA individual title and was recognized with All-America status. A member of the KU Hall of Fame, Lawson also performed valiantly on the Kansas track and field team, earning three AllAmerica awards: one in indoor for his second-place performance in the two-mile run and two in outdoor for consecutive second-place finishes in the three-mile run in 1965 and 1966. At the conference level, Lawson captured four individual championships: three indoor (1964 and 1966, two-mile run; 1966, mile run) and one outdoor championship (1965, three-mile run). Lawson’s statue at Rim Rock Farm can be found near the end of the third mile of the course, southwest of the finish line. THE STORIES BEHIND THE STATUES JIM RYUN: There is perhaps no other athlete more associated with Kansas distance running than Jim Ryun. His legend extends far beyond his KU acomplishments. A three-time Olympian (1964, 1968 and 1972), Ryun captured silver at the 1968 games in Mexico City in the 1,500 meters, duplicating the performance of former Jayhawk Glenn Cunningham in the 1936 games. During his tenure at KU from 1966-69, Ryun broke five world records, including the world outdoor mile record twice, and also claimed five individual NCAA titles. Before attending Kansas, Ryun became the first high school runner to complete the mile in under four minutes. In addition, his national high school mile record of 3:55.3, set over 30 years ago, still stands today for events completed in the US. Inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1982, Ryun’s statue at Rim Rock Farm sits atop the Jim Ryun Skyline Bend and is the first statue visitors see when turning into Rim Rock Farm.

THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS Kansas Roots, Global Reach The University of Kansas - fondly known as KU - is a tradition-rich, comprehensive research university that throughout its distinguished history has excelled in creating superior, enduring value for students, the state of Kansas, and the world. KU ranks among the nation's premier public research universities and is a leading center for study in a wide range of fields: the arts and humanities, the sciences, and the professions. Founded by the same determined New Englanders who had emigrated to the Kansas Territory to create a state free of slavery, KU became one of the first universities of the Great Plains. The university opened its doors on Sept. 12, 1866, to 29 men and 26 women. Never in its history has KU restricted admissions based on race or gender. Since its early years, KU has been fueled by high aspirations and today enjoys a national reputation for innovation and academic excellence. In 1890, the first chapters of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi west of the Mississippi River were chartered at Lawrence. The following year, the KU Endowment Association was established, the first foundation of its kind supporting a state-assisted university. In 1908, KU became one of the first 11 public universities to be admitted to the prestigious Association of American Universities. Not to be forgotten: KU initiated interscholastic basketball competition in 1898, under the leadership of Dr. James Naismith, the founder of basketball. With a student body of 29,590 and an endowment with assets of more than $1 billion, KU has become a diversified, broad-based center of learning with professional schools in allied health, architecture and urban design, business, education, engineering, fine arts, journalism and mass communication, law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and social welfare. KU also has expanded geographically, adding the Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas; the School of Medicine clinical branch in Wichita; the Edwards Campus in Overland Park; and educational and research facilities throughout the state. World-class, Accessible Education KU faculty members have earned international distinction: 10 have been elected national academy members, 35 are fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and 269 have received Fulbright awards for international study since 1950.
Led by the faculty, KU students have achieved an impressive record of major honors: 25 Rhodes, 388 Fulbright, 38 Goldwater, 15 Truman, 13 Udall, and 9 Marshall scholarships; 24 Mellon fellowships; five Javits fellowships; and one Churchill scholarship. KU prepares students for success in an increasingly global economy. Path-breaking Research KU's total research expenditures reached a record $274 million in 2004, more than double totals of fewer than 10 years ago. Particularly strong programs in drug development and delivery are fueled by the School of Pharmacy, which stands third in the nation in National Institutes of Health funding. THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS In spring 2005, KU received a $19 million, five-year award from the National Science Foundation for a Science and Technology Center to study polar ice caps and global climate issues. With this award, KU joined an elite group of five U.S. universities with both an NSF Science and Technology Center and an NSF Engineering Research Center. A $17 million grant created KU's engineering research center in 2003 to develop environmentally friendly chemical processes. BIG 12 CONFERENCE The Big 12 Conference - Entering its Second Decade of Competition Fresh off its 10th anniversary season, the Big 12 Conference begins its second decade of competition in 2006-07. While there have been many proud accomplishments through the first 10 years, the conference and its members anticipate continued success. Through its first 10 years, the Big 12 claimed 28 team and 310 individual NCAA titles. During this past season, conference programs captured national championships in football (Texas), women’s indoor track and field (Texas), wrestling (Oklahoma State) and men’s golf (Oklahoma State). In addition, 12 individual event titles were also won by student-athletes who compete in the Big 12. The 2004-05 campaign marked the most successful in conference history with six NCAA championships. Baylor won the crown for women’s basketball, becoming the first Big 12 squad to win in that sport. Colorado won both the men’s and women’s cross country trophies, just the fourth school in NCAA history to win both in the same year. Oklahoma State regained the top spot in wrestling, winning the national title for the 33rd time. Texas captured its fourth women's outdoor track and field crown, along with its sixth national championship in baseball. The Big 12 leads all conferences with five appearances in the BCS National Championship game. A Big 12 team has played for the football national championship five of the last six years, and each of the last three. In basketball, an unprecedented eight men’s and women’s basketball teams have advanced to their respective Final Fours in the past five seasons as the Big 12 continues its place among the elite intercollegiate athletic conferences. The Big 12 and its member institutions are committed to a competitive environment where sportsmanship and fair play take center stage. Whether on the field, in the classroom, or within the community the student-athletes, administrators, coaches and game officials of the Big 12 support the highest ideals in sportsmanship. Competitive excellence, scholarships and sportsmanship are all equal components of the Big 12’s philosophy. All-Big 12 teams and All-Big 12 Academic squads are recognized for each sport at the end of their respective seasons. At the end of each academic year, the Conference honors its top male and female student-athletes with the Big 12 Athlete of the Year and Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year awards. Institutions can also nominate student-athletes for the prestigious Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarships at the end of each academic year. A total of 153 scholars have received more than $845,000 in postgraduate financial aid through the first nine years of the program. The Big 12 sponsors 21 sports. Men’s squads include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, swimming and diving, tennis and wrestling. Women’s teams are fielded in basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball. The conference is made up of 12 institutions that have shared many traditional rivalries throughout their histories. Member schools include - Baylor University, University of Colorado, Iowa State University, University of Kansas, Kansas State University, University of Missouri, University of Nebraska, University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University, University of Texas, Texas A&M University and Texas Tech University. The institutions created a league that encompasses seven states, over 42 million people and more than 18 million television households within its geographic footprint. The Conference conducts championships for 20 of its 21 sports. Each championship helps to determine teams and/or individuals that who represent the Conference in national postseason competition. The winner of the Big 12 football championship game earns the league’s berth into the prestigious Bowl Championship Series. The Big 12 is under the direction of its third commissioner, Kevin L. Weiberg, who took over the reigns in December 1998. Weiberg has led the Big 12 into additional football bowl agreements and expanded television opportunities for all sports through contracts with ABC/ESPN, FSN, TBS and CSTV. In its 10-year history, the Conference has distributed $807.2 million to its 12 member institutions. The Big 12 staff administers to over 4,600 student-athletes in 21 sports. The conference headquarters will move to Irving, Texas, from Dallas in August 2006.
