Head Coach 8th Year at Kansas/14th Overall Arkansas, 1985 Since taking the reins of the track and field and cross country teams at the University of Kansas, Stanley Redwine has found success in leaps and bounds. As he enters his eighth year at the helm, Redwine, his staff and his teams continue to establish their marks in the lore of Jayhawk history, shattering school records and adding several AllAmericans to the illustrious luminaries of Kansas’ storied past. Judging by his results, both as a coach and as an athlete, this path looks to continue into the future. In Redwine’s first seven seasons, 29 Kansas studentathletes have achieved 53 All-America honors and the men’s and women’s teams have combined to set more than 60 school records and crack the KU all-time top-five list in more than 60 events. At Kansas, he has coached four individuals to national championships in six different events. As a result of their outstanding performances, Redwine’s 2001 and 2002 men’s track and field teams were enshrined into the KU Hall of Fame after back-to-back eighth-place finishes at the NCAA Championships. Since coming to Lawrence, Redwine has also found time to coach at the international level. This past July, he traveled to Rio de Janeiro as the men's track head coach for Team USA at the Pan-American games. Redwine's athletes took home 20 medals, including three golds. It was the second time Redwine was selected to coach the team, as he also served as an assistant at the 2003 games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Throughout Redwine's tenure, his teams have also shown great success in the classroom. In the past two seasons alone, the cross country teams have supplied 18 members to the Academic All-Big 12 teams, while the track teams have contributed 45 to the same list. Following the 2007 outdoor track season, 11 more student-athletes were named to the USTFCCCA Division I All-Academic Team and yet another, Egor Agafonov, was named an Academic All-America by CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine. The athletic achievements of the 2007 seasons were just as plentiful. The men's cross country team made its secondconsecutive NCAA appearance, finishing 20th as Colby Wissel and Paul Hefferon became the first Kansas runners in 12 years to win All-America honors in the same season. Wissel was also one of three indoor athletes to receive the All-America honors as the men finished 16th nationally and the women 34th. The outdoor season was one of the best in Redwine's tenure. The teams set a school record with eight All-Ameicans, including the first duo of KU men's long jumpers to claim the distinction in the same year (Eric Babb and Barrett Saunders). The men had their best finish since 1989, ranking 18th in the nation, while the women's fifth place finish at the Big 12 Championships was their highest showing in 13 years. Six different Jayhawks won individual Big 12 titles (also a school record) and freshman pole vaulter, Big 12 Indoor Performer

of the Year, Jordan Scott, won the same award during the outdoor season. In Redwine's sixth season, the men’s cross country team recorded its best results at both the Big 12 Conference Championships and the NCAA Championships in more than a decade, finishing third and 12th, respectively. Additionally, Redwine and his staff mentored Benson Chesang to back-toback Big 12 titles in cross country, the first time a Jayhawk had accomplished the feat since the 1950s. On the track, Redwine and his staff oversaw the development of Sheldon Battle, a six-time All-American. Battle was named the 2006 Division I Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Year for the Midwest Region. In total, the 2006 track and field season delivered Redwine and his staff six more All-America performers in 10 events. In 2005, Redwine and his staff oversaw five athletes receive All-America accolades in outdoor track as Redwine and his staff guided Amy Linnen to Big 12 and NCAA Championships in the pole vault. The Jayhawk men finished 25th nationally as the women placed 29th nationally. The summer of 2005 also saw the Jayhawks claim success on the international stage as Paul Hefferon captured silver in the 5000-meter race at the Junior Pan Am Games in Windsor, Ontario. Coach Redwine's 2004 men's cross country team tied its Big 12 and regional finishes from the previous season, finishing fourth at both meets. In addition to the first of his two Big 12 championships, Redwine and his staff saw Chesang become the first KU cross country All-American in a decade with a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Championships. During the 2003 season, Redwine guided the women’s indoor track and field team to a fourth-place finish at the Big 12 Conference Championships and a sixthplace finish at the outdoor championships. On the men’s side, Redwine and his staff helped develop Leo Bookman as he became the indoor and outdoor national champion in the 200-meter dash, a feat he would repeat at the indoor championships in 2004. Redwine’s second season at KU was very prosperous. In 2002, he produced eight Big 12 champions, 21 total NCAA qualifiers and two individual national titlists. The men's track teams finished eighth in the nation during the indoor season and then gave a fourth-place performance at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships and finished 21st nationally. Also in 2002, Redwine and his staff guided seven athletes to a total of eight All-American titles, while the men’s squad set four outdoor and seven indoor school records and one all-time collegiate record.

In his first season at Kansas, Redwine and his staff made their mark quickly, turning what some considered a rebuilding project into a budding powerhouse. Redwine mentored seven different athletes to a total of nine All-America awards and had three athletes qualify for the USATF Indoor Championships, two athletes compete at the USATF Outdoor Championships, two athletes set a total of three national records, one athlete compete at the IAAF World Championships in Edmonton, Canada, and two athletes compete at the World University Games in Beijing, China. Both his 2000 cross country teams improved at the Big 12 Conference championships as well, as the men placed sixth and the women improved from 11th to eighth. Before Redwine was selected as head coach at Kansas on May 25, 2000, he had a six-year stint as head coach at the University of Tulsa. At Tulsa, Redwine's athletes broke more than 70 school records, most on multiple occasions. In many events, Redwine's athletes completely rewrote the Golden Hurricane's all-time Top10 performance lists. Including some of the top finishes in conference history, Redwine produced 11 NCAA qualifiers and the Tulsa's first-ever All-American. Redwine also oversaw the Golden Hurricanes as they registered some of the highest conference finishes in school history. Prior to his appointment at Tulsa in 1994, Redwine spent 11 years as an assistant coach at the University Redwine was an All-American in of Arkansas, one of the the 600-yard run (twice), the premier track and field 800-yard run and the 800-meter programs in the nation. run. During his tenure at UA, the Razorbacks captured nine consecutive NCAA championships and 22 titles from 1985 through 1994 in both track and field and cross country. He helped produce 14 All-Americans and two NCAA champions in hurdle and sprint events. Among those All-Americans were twotime 400 meter NCAA indoor and outdoor champion, Calvin Davis; three-time 400 meter and 500 meter NCAA champion, Robbie Haley; and seven-time All-American sprinter, Jimmy French. Before becoming a coach at Arkansas, Redwine placed his name in the Razorback history books as a 400-meter, 600-yard and 800-meter runner from 1980-1983. Redwine was a fourtime All-American and was named UA's Outstanding Track Athlete all four of his years in Fayetteville. He was a six-time conference champion and still ranks among the Razorbacks' Top-10 in six events, which includes anchoring the school's record-setting sprint medley relay team (3:15.10) at the Penn Relays in 1983, which still ranks as the second-best time in school history. For his achievements, Redwine was inducted into the University of Arkansas Hall of Honor in 2003. Professionally, Redwine retired from competition in 1996

Assistant Coach 8th year at Kansas/17th Overall Central Missouri State, ‘81 Doug Clark begins his eighth year at the University of Kansas as an assistant cross country coach and middle distance/distance coach for the track team. Clark came to KU after six successful seasons as an assistant coach to Stanley Redwine at the University of Tulsa. Clark has worked closely with Redwine throughout his career, also coaching alongside him from 1988-93 at the University of Arkansas. In Clark's last two seasons at Kansas, the men's cross country team has finished 12th (2005) and 20th (2006) at the NCAA Championships, the first two Top-20 finishes since 1994. The team also had back-toback third-place showings at the conference level which were the highest finishes since Kansas placed second in the Big Eight Conference in 1981. The second-place finish at the Midwest Regionals matched the team's best effort since the inception of the regional format in 1978. Kansas also boasts the last three Big 12 individual champions in Benson Chesang (2004, 2005) and Colby Wissel (2006) as well as three All-Americans in the last three seasons. Chesang earned the honor in 2004, while Paul Hefferon and Wissel each earned the distinction last year. In doing so, the teammates became the first pair of Jayhawks to receive All-American status in the same season since 1994. The 2006 women's team, featuring nine freshmen and just one senior, finished 11th in the Big 12. The youngsters, however, made great strides toward the end of the year and throughout the 2007 track seasons and figure to be much improved. Senior Alicia McGregor and sophomore Lauren Bonds both scored at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships and will join senior Lisa Morrisey, the top runner for the 2006 cross country squad, to form a formidable nucleus in the 2007 season. Complementing the progress of senior Hayley Harbert and the 2006 freshmen will be newcomers Kara Windisch, the reigning Class 6A Kansas state champion in the 3,200-meter run and Amanda Miller, who placed second at the cross country Class 6A Kansas state championships in 2005 and had a fifth place finish in 2006.

Throughout Clark's seven-year tenure, the Jayhawks have produced All-American athletes in the 1,500 meter (two), Mile (two), 3,000 meter (one), 3,000 meter steeplechase (one), 5,000 meter (two), and distance medley relay (four) as well as an additional nine NCAA qualifiers in cross country and track. In that period, the team has also made major revisions to the school's all-time performance lists including school records in the men's and women's 1,000 meters, women's 1,500 meters, men's 3,000 meters and the men's and women's distance medley relay. Since arriving at Kansas, Clark also directed Jayhawk Alumnus Charlie Gruber to a second place finish at the 2004 Olympic Trials and as a member of the 2004 USA Olympic Team in the 1,500-meter run. That year Gruber ran a 3:34.71/1,500 meters and 1:46.30/800 meters, was champion at the USATF 4K Cross Country Championships and finished second at the USATF Indoor Championships in the 1,500meter run. In 2005, he oversaw Paul Hefferon to the USATF Junior Championship title and to the silver medal at the Pan American Junior Championships, both in the 5,000-meter run. During Clark's tenure at Tulsa, the distance and middle distance athletes again made major modifications to the school record book including multiple Western Athletic Conference and Missouri Valley Conference championships. Most notably, Clark directed Dwight Davis to a school record 3:59.29 mile and Tulsa's first-ever track All-American awards in the indoor mile and outdoor 1,500 meter-run in 2000. Prior to Tulsa, Clark served as an assistant coach at the University of Texas-El Paso in the spring of 1994. While with the Miners, he coached Jim Svenoy to a NCAA Championship in the outdoor 3,000 meter steeplechase. Under Clark, Svenoy also set a Norwegian record in the indoor 3,000-meter run (7:51), good enough for a second-place finish at the NCAA Championships. UTEP finished third in the nation during the indoor season and was national runner-up during the outdoor championships. While with Arkansas, Clark helped assemble one of the most dominant teams in the history of college athletics. During the 1991-92, 1992-93 and 1993-94 school years, Arkansas won all nine NCAA Championships in Cross Country (three), Indoor Track (three) and Outdoor Track (three). Clark was an NCAA qualifier in cross country at Southwest Missouri State University and qualified for the 2000 Olympic Marathon Trials, running 2:17.40. He was the top Masters runner in Oklahoma from 1996-2000 posting times of 14:58/5K, 25:45/8K, and 31:41/10K.

2006 Year in Review

www.kuathletics.com

2006 Year in Review The 2006 Cross Country season was very successful for the men's squad, while providing the women's team reasons to be optimistic for the upcoming year. Juniors Colby Wissel and Paul Hefferon became the first pair of Jayhawks to be named All-Americans since 1994, as the men finished 20th at the NCAA Championships. The young women's squad had many bright spots throughout the season despite the roster consisting of nine freshmen and just one senior. In the opening meet of the season, the men and women swept the Bob Timmons Invitational at Rim Rock Farm for the second consecutive year. In the men's race, Hefferon (25:38.95) fought off Wissel for the first win of his collegiate career. The men won the 10-team race as seniors Erik Sloan and Tyler Kelly and junior Patrick McGowan all finished within the top 10. Melissa O'Rourke led the Kansas women on their home course with a sixth-place finish (23:14.51), followed by senior Laura Major, who was second on the team with a 12th place showing (23:23.95).

Hefferon came in just 11 seconds behind Wissel to place 16th. However, Heffferon would eclipse Wissel at the NCAA Pre-Nationals with his 13th-place finish (23:50.0). Wissel was 14th, crossing the finish line just two seconds behind. Benson Chesang finished third and Erik Sloan finished fourth in each of the two races as the men's team placed ninth at the Roy Griak Invitational and sixth at the NCAA Pre-Nationals.

2006 Year in Review In 2006, Kansas became the 11th different school in as many years to host the Big 12 Championships when the conference schools competed at Rim Rock Farm on Oct. 27. After Benson Chesang won the previous two conference titles, another Jayhawk, Wissel, took home the men's crown. Wissel fought off the frigid conditions and the hilly terrain to win the 8K race in time of 24:34.4. Hefferon and Chesang also earned All-Big 12 honors as Hefferon had an impressive fourth-place showing and Chesang came in under the 25-minute mark of the 8K race for a 12th-place finish. Seniors Matt French (33rd) and Tyler Kelly (34th) rounded out the top five runners for Kansas. During the Big 12 Championships, the Kansas women were unable to find the same success they had in September at Rim Rock Farm The Jayhawks finished in 11th place and were led by Morrisey's 45thplace finish. The junior from Ottawa, Kan., ran the 6K race in a time of 22:48.9. Junior Alicia McGregor and freshman Lauren Bonds finished 57th and 58th, respectively.

Back-to-Back-to-Back Big 12 Individual Champions

2004 and 2005 Benson Chesang

A member of the Jayhawk crimson and blue has been the first to cross the finish line for the past three years at the Men’s Big 12 Championships. In 2004, Benson Chesang began the string of titles when he narrowly edged out Brent Vaughn of Colorado. His winning time of 24:07.43 at the Stateland Cross Country Course in Topeka, Kan. was just over a second faster than Vaughn’s. Chesang followed up his 2004 performance with another Big 12 championship in 2005 in Waco, Texas. His winning time of 23:45.20 marked the first time in over fifty years a Kansas runner had won back-to-back conference crowns. The Jayhawks’ latest champion, Colby Wissel, won the 2006 title in a time of 24:34.40. The third straight victory for Kansas was even more special because Wissel’s championship was won at Kansas’ own historic Rim Rock Farm. Wissel and the Jayhawks will look to add a fourth title at the 2007 Championships in Lubbock, Texas on October 26.

Wes Santee (1952-55) • • • • •

1953 NCAA Individual Cross Country Champion Member of 1953 NCAA Cross Country Championship Team 1952 and 1953 Big Seven Conference Cross Country Champion 1952 Olympian in 5,000-meter run Broke three world records while at Kansas

A legendary Kansas Jayhawk, Wes Santee’s contributions to Kansas cross country and track and field are among the bedrocks of the tradition-rich heritage. Santee, an Ashland, Kan. native, captured the NCAA championship in 1953, giving KU the individual crown for the third time in four years. In fact, Santee’s All-American performance at the 1953 NCAA Championships propelled the Kansas cross country team to the NCAA title, the only cross country team in KU’s history to achieve the feat. Santee also excelled at the conference level, claiming back-to-back league championships in 1952 and 1953 and helping his team collect two Big Seven Conference championships (1952 and 1953). Santee was a member of the 1952 U.S. Olympic team in the 5,000 meters. He broke three world records while at Kansas, twice setting new marks in the indoor mile run (1954, 4:04.9; 1955, 4:03.8) and in the outdoor 1,500 meters (1954, 3:42.8). A twotime outdoor All-American, Santee won the 5,000 meters in 1952 and the mile run in 1953. Santee collected seven conference championships: three indoor (1952-54, mile run; 1953, 880 yards) and four outdoor (1952-54, mile run; 1953, 880 yards). A member of the KU Hall of Fame, Santee’s statue at Rim Rock Farm (see map below) can be found at the start of the second mile of the course, west of the Shady Glen.

Herb Semper (1949-52) • 1950 and 1951 NCAA Cross Country Champion • 1950 and 1951 Big Seven Individual Conference Champion

A member of the Kansas cross country program during its golden era under the direction of head coach Bill Easton, Herb Semper firmly established his mark in the lore of Kansas cross country. Semper became the first Jayhawk to win an NCAA championship, prevailing in 1950 and 1951. He remains the only runner in KU history to win two cross country individual national championships. Under Easton’s guidance, Semper was a member of two Big Seven Conference championship teams (1950 and 1951) and was a two-time Big Seven individual champion (1950 and 1951). Semper is also a member of the KU Hall of Fame. Semper’s excellence extended to the Kansas track and field team as well. A four-time Big Seven Conference champion in the two-mile run (1950-52 indoor; 1950 outdoor), Semper was a two-time outdoor AllAmerican after back-to-back third-place finishes in the two-mile run at the NCAA Championships. Semper’s statue at Rim Rock Farm (see map below) is surrounded by three ponds (Teardrop Pond, Jayhawk Pond and Pat’s Little Pond) on the northeast portion of the course.

Jim Ryun (1966-69) • • • •

Broke five world records while at Kansas Five NCAA Championships Still Holds 11 Outdoor and three Indoor Track and Field records 1972 Olympic Silver Medalist in 1,500-meter run

There is perhaps no other athlete more associated with Kansas distance running than Jim Ryun. His legend extends far beyond his KU acomplishments. A three-time Olympian (1964, 1968 and 1972), Ryun captured silver at the 1968 games in Mexico City in the 1,500 meters, duplicating the performance of former Jayhawk Glenn Cunningham at the 1936 games. During his tenure at KU from 1966-69, Ryun broke five world records, including the world outdoor mile record twice, and also claimed five individual NCAA titles. Before attending Kansas, Ryun became the first high school runner to complete the mile run in under four minutes. In addition, his national high school mile record of 3:55.3, set over 30 years ago, still stands today for events completed in the U.S. Inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1982, Ryun’s statue at Rim Rock Farm (see map below) sits atop the Jim Ryun Skyline Bend and is among the first statues visitors see when turning into Rim Rock Farm.

Glenn Cunningham (1931-34) • 1931 and 1932 Big Six Cross Country Conference Champion • Silver Medalist in 1,500-meter run at 1936 Olympics • Broke three world records while at Kansas One of the earliest cross country greats to don the Crimson and Blue was Glenn Cunningham. A member of the KU Hall of Fame, Cunningham was a two-time Big Six Conference cross country champion, capturing the league crown in 1931 and 1932. Cunningham also excelled in track and field while at Kansas, breaking the world record in the indoor 1,500 meters (3:53.3) in 1934 and both the indoor mile (4:08.4) in 1932 and the outdoor mile (4:06.7) in 1933. During his tenure on the track at KU, he served as team captain in 1934 and won 12 conference championships: four indoor (1932-34, mile run and 1934, 880-yard run) and eight outdoor (1932-34, mile run; 193234, 880-yard run; 1933-34, two-mile run). In 1932 and 1933, Cunningham was the NCAA champion in the mile run, earning All-American accolades in the process. A two-time Olympian in the 1,500 meters (1932 and 1936), Cunningham won the silver medal at the 1936 summer games in Berlin. In 1974, he became one of the first inductees into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. In accordance with his early success, Cunningham’s statue is located near the start of the course (see map below). The finish line at Rim Rock Farm is affectionately known as the Glenn Cunningham Finish.

Billy Mills (1958-61) • 1958 and 1959 All-American • 1960 Big Eight Cross Country Champion • 1964 10,000 meter Olympic Gold Medalist

Gold medalist. All-American. Hall-of-Famer. Kansas Jayhawk. All these accolades describe Billy Mills, who made his impact on the Kansas tradition with golden footprints. A two-time AllAmerican (1958 and 1959), Mills captured the 1960 Big Eight cross country championship. He was also a part of two Big Eight Conference team titles while at KU (1958 and 1959) under head coach Bill Easton. However, Mills’ legacy at KU extends far beyond the borders of the Sunflower State. A member of the 1964 United States Olympic team, Mills won the gold medal in the 10,000 meters and set a new Olympic record. In dramatic fashion, Mills came from behind on the last lap to win the race in Tokyo and to this day, he is still the only American to win the event. Mills’ success was also evident on the track and field team, as he set a world record in the six-mile run in 1965 (27:11.6). He won two Big Eight Conference championships, capturing both the indoor and outdoor championships in 1961 and was a member of both the 1959 and 1960 NCAA championship track teams. Inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1976, Mills’ iconic statue, in which his arms are raised high, is placed on the last straightaway of Rim Rock Farm (see map below), saluting the runners for their perseverance and will to compete. In fact, the pose of Billy’s silhouette is identical to the one he struck upon winning the gold medal at the 1964 Olympics.

John Lawson (1963-66) • 1965 Big Eight Cross Country Champion • 1965 NCAA Champion • 1965 All-American As the most recent Kansas cross country runner to win the NCAA championships, John Lawson’s career signals yet another chapter in the golden era of Kansas cross country. In 1965, Lawson pulled off an impressive sweep, capturing both the Big Eight Conference championship and the NCAA individual title and was recognized with All-America status. A member of the KU Hall of Fame, Lawson also performed valiantly on the Kansas track and field team, earning three All-America awards: one indoor for his second-place performance in the two-mile run and two outdoor for consecutive second-place finishes in the three-mile run in 1965 and 1966. At the conference level, Lawson captured four individual championships: three indoor (1964 and 1966, two-mile run; 1966, mile run) and one outdoor championship (1965, three-mile run). Lawson’s statue at Rim Rock Farm (see map below) can be found near the end of the third mile of the course, southwest of the finish line.

• 1954 and 1955 Big Seven Champion • 1954 and 1955 All-Amercian • 1954 NCAA Champion A teammate of Wes Santee, Al Frame carved out an equally impressive cross country and track and field career while attending the University of Kansas. A member of the 1953 NCAA championship team, Frame won the individual NCAA championship in 1954. Under the tutelage of head coach Bill Easton, Frame was a member of three Big Seven Conference championship teams while at KU. He also won the Big Seven individual championship twice, netting the accomplishment in back-to-back years (1954 and 1955) and was the last Jayhawk to do so until Benson Chesang won the Big 12 Championships in consecutive years (2004 and 2005). A 1954 and 1955 All-America honoree, Frame, like so many before him, also found success on the track and field team. During his time on the team, Frame captured six Big Seven Conference championships: four indoor (1954, two-mile run; 1955-56, mile run; 1956, 880-yard run) and two outdoor (1955, mile run; 1955, two-mile run). A thirdplace finish at the outdoor NCAA Championships in 1955 added All-America status to Frame’s resume. A member of the KU Hall of Fame, Frame’s statue at Rim Rock Farm (see map below) is located just north of Pat’s Little Pond on the third mile of the course.

• 11-time NCAA District V Coach-of-the-Year • Four Track and Field NCAA Championships • 1975 USTFCA National Coach-of-the-Year Bob Timmons is to Kansas Cross Country what Phog Allen is to Kansas Basketball. The man who coched KU to four NCAA Track and Field Championships is perhaps most noted for bringing Jim Ryun to Lawrence. Timmons coached Ryun at Wichita East High School until 1964, when he became an assistant at KU for a year under Bill Easton. Ryun then followed Timmons to Kansas where he continued to thrive under Timmons’ coaching. Timmons was an 11-time NCAA District V Coach-of-the-Year and was the 1975 U.S. Track and Field Coaches Association National Coach-ofthe-Year. At the helm of the KU track and field program, he led the Jayhawks to 13 indoor league crowns and 14 outdoor titles. In cross country, Timmons guided John Lawson to the 1965 NCAA Individual Championship. In 1970, Timmons and his wife, Pat, purchased land just north of Lawrence. In 1974 that property became known as Rim Rock Farm and it has been home of the Jayhawk Cross Country team ever since. Rim Rock Farm is now known as one of the best and toughest courses in the nation and is a credit to Timmons’ vision and passion for cross country. The annual Bob Timmons Invitational is held each September in his honor on the course he put so much work into. During his career, Timmons coached 77 AllAmericans, 24 NCAA champions, 16 world record holders and seven Olympians. Timmons is a member of the Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of Fame, the KU Hall of Fame, and the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.

In a career that spanned over three decades, Bill Easton built a reputation of one of the nation’s best track and field coaches. Before coming to Kansas in 1948, Easton won three-straight cross country NCAA Championships with Drake University while also serving as the meet director for the Drake Relays. At Kansas, his teams were always near the top of the conference. His cross country teams won 15 conference championships and never finished worse than second in his 18 years as coach. He won conference titles in cross country, indoor and outdoor track for eight consecutive years. The first highlight of Easton’s Jayhawk career came in 1953 when his cross country team won the NCAA Championship. He later won the 1959 and 1960 outdoor men’s track and field titles. Easton coached 32 All-Americans including Wes Santee, Herb Semper, Al Frame, Billy Mills and John Lawson. In track and field, he mentored Olympic champions Bill Nieder and Al Oerter. All together, Easton coached eight Olympians. His KU athletes set 14 intercollegiate records, seven NCAA records, 14 American records, four Olympic records and four world records. He is a member of seven different halls of fame including the KU Hall of Fame and the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame. The Bill Easton Scoreboard stands in his honor near the finish line at Rim Rock Farm.

The University of Kansas hosts its home cross country meets at historic Rim Rock Farm, northwest of Lawrence. Before being donated to KU in 2004, the property was owned by former head track and field and cross country coach Bob Timmons and has been the home of the Jayhawks since the 1974 season. Any runner or spectator will say that the course is quite challenging and unusual. In addition to having two covered bridges as part of the course, Rim Rock Farm also features specific hills, turns and other landmarks that are named after former Jayhawk greats. Dispersed throughout the course are silhouette statues of seven legendary Jayhawk distance runners including Herb Semper, Al Frame, John Lawson and Olympians Billy Mills, Wes Santee, Glenn Cunningham and Jim Ryun. Rim Rock Farm was the vision of Coach Timmons, who, during his 23-year tenure, won two cross country conference championships. “There is something for everyone at Rim Rock Farm,” Timmons said. “Parents are afforded the opportunity to walk around throughout the course and find all the wonderful places to observe. Spectators can catch the runners three or four times throughout the event and explore the different elevations. And the runners can navigate a course that will challenge them with its obstacles and amaze them with its beauty. That’s what makes Rim Rock Farm so exciting.” In the fall of 2006, Rim Rock Farm played host to its first Big 12 Cross Country Conference Championships. Rim Rock Farm hosted the Big Eight Cross Country Championships in 1983, 1991 and 1995 and was also the site of the 1998 NCAA Division I and II Cross Country Championships as well as numerous Kansas high school state meets. Rim Rock Farm is home of the Jayhawks, but also home to former Kansas runner Steve Heffernan. After donating the course to KU, Timmons made sure that the cozy house in the middle of the farm has a full-time tenant. Heffernan is currently responsible for the farm’s upkeep, while also serving as head coach of cross country and track and field at Lawrence Free State High School. D R R F : Those traveling to Rim Rock from the Kansas Turnpike are advised to take the East Lawrence exit and then travel north on Kansas Highway 24/59 (which curves to the west) for approximately 2.5 miles before turning right (north) on the asphalt road at the Midland Store. Approximately 2.5 miles later, watch for an abandoned natural gas station on the right and make a left turn (west) at that point onto a gravel road. About .25 miles ahead, make a right turn and follow the gravel road approximately 1.33 miles (north) to the course. Maps are available through the cross country office by calling (785) 864-3486 or by visiting www.kuathletics.com.
