2016-17 Season Preview Though 2015-16 was a historic season for Kansas swimming and diving, a 9-4 dual meet record capped off with the program’s second top-two finish and highest-ever point total at the Big 12 Championships, the Jayhawks are unsatisfied with keeping pace with last year’s success. Depth will be key to the team continuing its growth trend; with 24 swimmers and six divers this will be the largest roster since the 2008-2009 season. Despite the graduation of All-American Chelsie Miller, the Jayhawks can trust in the talent of the returners and newcomers. Sophomore Libby Walker and freshmen Haley Downey and Jenny Nusbaum swam alongside Miller at the US Olympic Trials this past summer. The talented underclassmen will be buoyed by the leadership provided by this year’s large, nine-person senior class. “What I’m really happy about is we have a nine-person senior class that wants to leave their mark; they want to leave a legacy,” 15-year head coach Clark Campbell said. “Coming off of a historical last year will be a great challenge. We have a really good senior class that’s doing a really good job leading.” Winding down from the Olympic fervor this summer, an emphasis will be placed on training this year before the start of the season. Having a large stable of swimmers at the top of their game affords Campbell the flexibility to set lineups that will give the team the highest chance for success. “We have more depth than we usually do, which is nice, but it’s solid depth. What we want to do is be great,” said Campbell. “It’s going to require everyone to be working together to become the best version of ourselves. If we do that, we’ll even surpass what we did last year.” An additional source of leadership will be volunteer assistant Haley Molden, a four-time letterwinner at KU. Molden will complete her undergraduate degree in December but will remain with the team through the end of the season. The 2016 recipient of the Kansas Athletic Department’s Jayhawk in a Supporting Role will continue her four years of service to Kansas swimming and diving in a different function.

“Haley has been an addition already in her short amount of time on the staff. She has a real passion to coach. Making the transition from athlete to coach is one of the tougher ones when you’re that age. It’s really hard when you’re less than a year removed from the people you’re coaching being your teammates,” Campbell said. “I’ve been watching her do it and she has really embraced that necessity that you’ve got to have a barrier between the athletes and the coach. She’s done a really good job with learning that and running with it. At the same point she can really relate to the team; she knows exactly what they’re going through. Her influences in and out of the pool are really going to help us grow.” With two top-two finishes in the last three Big 12 Championships, the impact of last year’s senior class is clear. The Jayhawks on the roster have the ability to build off of last year’s success and carve their own marks into the history book. For Campbell, this is not a possibility, it’s an expectation. Here’s a look at a stroke-by-stroke breakdown of the 201617 Jayhawks, including quotes from Campbell on an individual swimmer from each:

MEDLEY • Versatile senior Pia Pavlic finished in the top-nine in three different strokes at the Big 12 meet and will provide short-distance expertise. • Sophomore Libby Walker placed in the top-five of three different strokes and will be looked upon to grind out the distance events. • Junior Madison Straight placed in the top-nine of her two medley events that the Big 12 meet. Clark Campbell on Madison Straight: “It’s going to be interesting because we lost Chelsie Miller but we have Madison Straight, who’s been a Big 12 Finalist several times and is another person who had a really good summer and can be a leader right away.”

BUTTERFLY • Sophomore Haley Bishop tallied up the most points by a Jayhawk at the Big 12 meet and will continue to be a highlight for Kansas. • Sophomore Cassaundra Pino and junior Zoya Wahlstrom will provide consistency to the butterflyers. Clark Campbell on Haley Bishop: “Haley Bishop is really solid. Bishop is more of the lightning kid and Libby Walker is more of the thunder kid, she does longer distances and Bishop does the shorter ones.”

BREASTSTROKE • The Pocisk sisters will once again make the breast stroke a family affair. The two both finished in the top-12 in breaststroke events at the Big 12 Championship, with senior Gretchen Pocisk placing in the top-eight in both events. Junior Lydia Pocisk earned a dozen top-five finishes during her sophomore season. • Junior Briana Balsbough provides reliability and steadiness to the breastroke. • Freshman Haley Downey will bring the speed that qualified her for the 200-meter breastroke at Olympic Trials. Clark Campbell on the breaststrokers: “That’s probably the one area where we don’t quite have the depth but we have the quality. We have just got to make sure we roll with that and let them have plenty of opportunities to get the reps they need.”

BACKSTROKE • Senior Yulduz Kuchkarova is coming off of a dominant performance at the Big 12 Championship, where she swam two lifetime-best marks to earn two top-three finishes and add her name to the Kansas record book. • Ever-reliable junior Madison Hutchison is also returning from turning in two career-best times at the Big 12 Championships. • A freshman campaign consisting of eight top-five finishes will be a good foundation for Taylor Sieperda to build off of. • Senior Hannah Angell will continue churning out high finishes in the 100-yard backstroke • Three-time 100-yard backstroke champion Elizabeth AmatoHanner will strengthen an already-formidable group of backstrokers. Campbell on Elizabeth Amato-Hanner: “The senior class is loaded with backstrokers. Somebody who I think would be exciting to see coming in is Elizabeth Amato-Hanner. She had a really good summer, wanted to make trials but was just short, but she has used that for motivation and has been really doing well early on. I’m excited to see what she does.”

FREESTYLE • Sophomore Breonna Barker will build off of her freshman year dominance in sprints, where she recorded two top-five finishes at the Big 12 Championships. • Four-time Texas 6A state championship finalist Carly Straight and top-3 Indiana girls sectional championship finisher Katy Schlies will rev up the Jayhawk sprints. • Junior Hannah Driscoll and senior Leah Pfitzer will shore up Kansas sprints. • Distance swimming will see mostly familiar faces with bedrock seniors Sammie Schurig and Lindsay Manning and junior Nika Fellows comprising a majority of KU distance. • Freshman Jenny Nusbaum, an Olympic Trials participant in the 200-meter freestyle, will add a fresh face to Kansas distance swimming. DIVING • Senior Graylyn Jones qualified for her second NCAA Zone D Diving Championships in both the one and three-meter dives with a junior-year resume that included 10 top-three finishes and a careerbest three-meter dive. She will look to make a third-consecutive trip to the NCAA Diving Championships. • Junior Nadia Khechfe also represented Kansas at the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships in the one and three-meter dives. • Senior Amanda Maser provides senior leadership and experience to this group of divers. • Redshirt sophomore Jasmine Deng will debut for the Jayhawks after diving at Coe College, where she finished in the top-10 in both the three and one-meter dives. • Freshmen T.J. Strength & Conditioning The Anderson Family Strength & Conditioning Center is a split-level facility that features 20 Power Lift platforms and power racks, most recently outfitted with Elite Form 3D Camera technology which is used for measuring bar speed and calculating power output for each exercise performed in the rack. The training center houses Uesaka bumper plates and Olympic bars, along with two full sets of dumbbells to 120lbs. While mostly a free weight oriented program, Anderson also houses Keiser power equipment, eight one-of-a-kind high speed cable systems, and Hammer strength machines. In addition, a 50-yard open turf area for speed and agility development and a cardiovascular workout area are available.

Sports Medicine The University of Kansas sports medicine staff and physicians are constantly on the cutting edge of injury prevention and rehabilitation. CONSECUTIVE SEMESTERS THAT KANSAS SWIMMING AND DIVING HAS EARNED A GPA OF 3.0 OR HIGHER

ACADEMICS The Student-Athlete Support Services staff focuses all collective resources in support of the academic, personal and interpersonal development of each individual it serves. As part of its commitment to the academic success of its athletes, Kansas Athletics completed a new academic complex in the summer of 2009. The facility features individual study rooms, a computer lab and offices for all Student-Athlete Support Services personnel. KANSAS ATHLETICS TUTORING PROGRAM • Tutoring is available to any student-athlete who needs academic assistance. • Approximately 100 tutors work for Kansas Athletics, many of whom are instructors or teaching assistants at KU or retired educators. Some tutors are undergraduate students who have excelled in their respective subject areas. • Kansas Athletics offers both individualized and small study group tutoring, based entirely upon the learning needs of each student-athlete. • More than 2,000 tutoring sessions are scheduled each week. • More than 300 student-athletes work with tutors each semester.

Ben Krauth: Unanimous All-Big 12 First Team, struck out 103 batters; Michael Tinsley: First catcher in KU history to earn All-Big 12 First Team honors, ABCA/ Rawlings All-Midwest Region Second Team, highest draft pick among catchers in program history, Johnny Bench Award Semifinalist, led Big 12 in hitting. 2. MEN’S BASKETBALL Team: Won the Maui Invitational, its 12thstraight and NCAA-leading 59th overall conference regular-season title and the postseason Big 12 Championships; KU entered the 2016 NCAA Championship as a No. 1 seed. All five KU starters were named All-Big 12: Perry Ellis, Wayne Selden Jr., Frank Mason III, Devonte’ Graham and Landen Lucas. THE K RING The K Ring symbolizes a uniquely shared experience between generations of varsity letter winners at the University of Kansas. As a Jayhawk you are expected to uphold tradition and retain the characteristics of a champion while continuing the create your own legacy.

WAVING THE WHEAT Since the early days of KU sports, it has been a ritual of Jayhawk fans to “wave the wheat” following every Kansas scoring drive in football. The tradition also extends to Allen Fieldhouse where fans “wave the wheat” when an opponent fouls out and at the conclusion of every Jayhawk victory. The ritual consists of fans waving their arms in the air, an activity which, when done by a large crowd, resembles a breezy Kansas wheat field.

THE ROCK CHALK CHANT The Rock Chalk Chant has been the battle cry of KU fans for more than 80 years. This strange, traditional chant, which is among the most famous of all college cheers, was started by E.H.S. Bailey, a professor of chemistry. On May 21, 1886, Bailey submitted the cheer to his club.

CAMPANILE HILL Campanile Hill forms the picturesque backdrop for Memorial Stadium. On a sunny fall Saturday, the “Hill” is transformed into a congregating place for watching Jayhawk football, sunning and barbequing. Potter Lake, just to the southwest of Memorial Stadium and at the bottom of Campanile Hill, adds to the beauty of the Kansas campus.

THE ALMA MATER In 1891, professor George Barlow Penny searched for a school song for the Glee and Mandolin Club to sing on its tour through Kansas to Denver and back. No one responded with an original song in answer to his appeals. Just before departure, he thought of the Cornell song “Far Above Cayuga’s Waters.” Hastily changing a few words, he gave it to the glee club men to sing on the trip. He did not expect the song to be used after their return, but “Crimson and the Blue” still goes on. The music is not Cornell’s but an old English folk tune, “Annie Lisle.”

Heading into his 15th season with the Jayhawks, head coach Clark Campbell has created a winning tradition and strong culture within the swimming and diving program. After bidding farewell to four seniors at the conclusion of the 2015-16 season, Campbell and the Jayhawks closed out one of the best four-year stints during his tenure. Kansas posted a 9-4 record this past season and combined for a 30-15 record since 2012. It was the second-consecutive season that KU tallied nine victories.

Campbell’s laid-back and genuine demeanor helps build close relationships with each of his swimmers outside of the pool. Not only does he care about making his swimmers better in the pool, but also in the classroom. Campbell’s team has been named by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) as a national Academic AllAmerican Team, earning a team GPA of 3.0 or higher, all 28 semesters he has managed the program. Attention to detail is what makes Campbell’s practices productive. Every set he organizes for the swimmers has scientific reasoning behind why it works and will ultimately lead to success. His team at KU has placed in the top-five at the Big 12 Championships all 14 seasons. At Kansas, Campbell has coached 18 swimmers to NCAA Championship appearances.

Campbell served as the head coach of the men’s and women’s programs at West Virginia Wesleyan from 19931995 and directed the school into a top-10 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics program in just two years. He was named the NAIA Swimming Coach of the Year in 1995. PERSONAL Campbell competed as a professional triathlete for seven years before his coaching career began. After turning professional at the age of 19, he became one of the most consistent top-10 finishers on the pro circuit. During his career, Campbell was self-coached. He was the 1986 National Long Course Champion and the 1990 runner-up at the United States Triathlon Series National Championship. Campbell received a Bachelor’s degree from Kansas in 1993, and a Master’s in physical education/coaching from West Virginia University in 1995. Campbell and his wife, Cassie, have three children: Canaan, Cierra and Claire.

COACHING BEFORE KANSAS Prior to his appointment at KU, Campbell coached at the University of Evansville for three years. There, he led several athletes to success at the national level and helped the program reach new heights. The Purple Aces established school records in all 19 men’s and women’s events while Campbell was at the helm of the program in 1998. Those top marks included 12 Missouri Valley Conference records.

From 1995-98, Campbell served as the assistant men’s swimming coach at the University of Minnesota. During his time in Minneapolis, the Golden Gophers captured Big Ten conference titles in 1996 and 1998 while earning top-15 finishes all three years at the NCAA Championships.

During the 2013-14 season Campbell coached Kansas’ first Big 12 Champion, Chelsie Miller, to victory in the 400yard individual medley. In the same season, the decorated coach also led the Jayhawks to their first top-two finish in 18 years.

During his four years at Evansville, his squads were named Academic All-America by the CSCAA all eight semesters. In 2000, Campbell was named the Missouri Valley Conference Men’s and Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year.

KU’s dominance in the pool over the years has brought Campbell to a 185-99 dual meet record throughout his coaching career.

For the second time in his 14 years at the helm of the swimming and diving program, Campbell was named Big 12 Coach of the Year. The other came in 2014 when he led KU to its first-ever top-two finish at the Big 12 Championships. This time, Campbell was accompanied by All-American Chelsie Miller, who was honored as 2016 Big 12 Swimmer of the Year. Campbell coached Miller to three-consecutive NCAA Championship bids, including her top-eight finish in the 400-yard individual medley at this past year’s championship meet. Miller earned All-America honors in all three appearances, receiving First Team accolades for the first time in 2016 and the first Jayhawk to finish in the top-eight at NCAAs since 1993.

In addition to turning in competitive results during the regular season, Campbell led the Jayhawks to their best league meet performance in the 20-year existence of the Big 12 Conference. Kansas registered a program-best 650.5 points at the meet while finishing second in the conference for the second time in three years. On the way to a record-breaking meet, Campbell saw 25 Jayhawks turn in top-eight performances and 20 Jayhawks make ‘B’ finals, all contributing to their final point total.

After an exciting year for the newlywed, former coach Fox returns as coach Jen Betz for her 14th season at Kansas. Betz knows exactly what life is like balancing intense pool workouts with school and a social life, being a former Jayhawk swimmer herself. Since joining the KU team as assistant coach in 2003, Betz has established close relationships with the swimmers and led strong recruiting efforts for the team. She knows what it takes on a daily basis to be successful both in and out of the pool, helping the team achieve a GPA of 3.0 or higher and recognized by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSAA) achieving Team Scholar Awards during all 24 of her semesters with KU.

SWIMMING CAREER AT KU (1996-2000) Former head swimming coach and assistant athletic director Gary Kempf recruited Betz to swim for Kansas. Betz competed in the backstroke and the freestyle events and was a seven-time scorer at the Big 12 Championships during her four years as an athlete at KU from 1996-2000.

She is married to Tate Betz. They will celebrate their one-year wedding anniversary in November.

PERSONAL After graduation, the Mansfield, Ohio native joined the full-time staff of Athletes in Action (AIA), a Christian sports organization that helps student-athletes throughout the country. AIA sent her to the University of Virginia where she became a volunteer assistant under head coach Mark Bernardino and worked with the men’s and women’s swimming teams. Both teams finished top 10 in the NCAA.

Her career at KU began in 2003 as she took the position of assistant coach and head recruiting coordinator under Campbell. She was a student assistant under former KU head swim coach Cathy Burgess during the 2000-01 season. In her first season, she assisted the

After serving as the interim diving coach for Kansas during part of the 2014-15 season, Downey became a permanent addition to the coaching staff last year. The Kansas City, Missouri native is familiar with KUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s swimming and diving program and has high expectations for the Jayhawks, both in and out of the pool. While Downey is looking forward to producing competitive divers for the Jayhawks, he is also focusing on creating a strong culture between the team.

Downey will continue his second collegiate coaching season this fall and is off to a strong start as two of three divers competed at the Zone Diving Championships last season. Starting his college coaching career with two divers, Downey has already made strong recruiting improvements as well. The team will now have five divers, and have their sights set on reaching finals on all three boards at the Big 12 Conference meet this year, as well as qualifying for Zone Championships.

Once a collegiate competitor himself, Downey understands the rigorous schedule and demands of student-athletes. The former diver competed for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he perfected the art of diving. After returning to the Kansas City metro area, Downey began to offer his talents as a coach for local club teams. A few of his accomplishments include back-to-back top-25 team finishes at the USA Diving Junior Nationals, as well as producing divers that competed in the 2008 and 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials.

First year Kansas athletic trainer Brittany Blunt is continuing the family business of sorts. Greatly influenced by her mother, a neo-natal nurse, and her aunt, a collegiate basketball student-athlete, Blunt has naturally combined the professions of her two mentors and is a National Athletic Trainers’ Association Certified Athletic Trainer. She is licensed by both the Texas Advisory Board and Kansas State Board of Healing Arts to practice sports medicine. No stranger to the physical demands of performing at the highest level, Blunt is a former track and field athlete who leans on her own competitive experience to provide empathetic and effective care. Blunt finished among the NJCAA’s top10 in hammer and weight throws at Coffeyville Community College before contributing in throws at Louisiana-Lafeyette, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in exercise science. Blunt returned to the heart of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex to earn an athletic training degree from the University of Texas at Arlington, a little more than a hammer’s throw from her hometown of Grand Prairie, Texas. Blunt gained experience in the field while interning for her hometown’s minor league baseball team, the Grand Prarie Airhogs. Blunt is excited to combine what in her mind is the best of both worlds - athletics and medicine - while working with the swimming and diving squad.

Luke Bradford is the strength and conditioning coach for the Jayhawk baseball, soccer, volleyball and swimming and diving teams. He is a National Strength and Conditiong Association Certified Strength and Conditioning specialist and a Muscle Activation Techniques specialist. He is also certified with USA Track and Field. Bradford came to KU in June of 2010 after serving as the Sports Performance Director at Velocity Sports Performance from 2003-10. He was also an assistant baseball coach/strength and conditioning coach at his alma mater, Emporia State, for two seasons. A varsity baseball player at Hutchinson Community College and Emporia State during his collegiate career, Bradford earned his bachelor’s degree from Emporia State in 2002 and a graduate degree from KU in 2011. Bradford and his wife, Emily, have a daughter, Marygrace. The couple resides in Lawrence.

Jason Brozek comes to KU from Indianapolis, Indiana where he worked in athletic administration and was the head swimming coach at Franklin Central High School and the Flashes Aquatics Club team. While at Franklin Central, he coached athletes to multiple school and club records and sent several swimmers on to compete at the collegiate level. With the Flashes, he was awarded Marion County High School Boys Swimming & Diving Coach of the Year for the 2013-14 season. Prior to the Flashes and Franklin Central, Brozek spent four years as an assistant coach at Butler University where he coached individual medley and distance swimmers, leading two athletes to become all-time school record holders. Brozek swam at Butler University as a studentathlete. He was a Horizon League Conference finalist and part of three school record-setting relay teams, competing primarily in breaststroke and IM. Brozek is originally from Great Bend, Kansas where he was an all-state swimmer and school-record holder. His younger sister, Jessica, swam for KU from 2005-09.

TEAM NUTRITIONIST TEXAS A&M

Aaron Carbuhn oversees all of the teams’ nutrition education and support. His role as the Kansas Athletics nutritionist ranges from planning specific meals for individual athletes to planning the menu for a team before competitions at home or on the road. When he’s not planning meals, Carbuhn is in charge of making sure that the department is stocked with supplements and food products. He also helps with the body composition tests and analysis. The Waco, Texas product came to KU in 2010 after spending a year working with the University of Houston’s football program as its strength and conditioning coach. Carbuhn earned his bachelor’s degree in nutrition from Texas A&M, as well as two master’s in nutrition and exercise physiology. He is currently working toward a PhD in exercise physiology and hopes to finish in the next two years. Carbuhn and his wife, Amanda, have two children, Karington and Makenna.

Demetrius Daniels started at Kansas Athletics in June, 2007 and serves as the Olympics sports equipment manager. Daniels was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he attended Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences. He played high school basketball and has an award co-named in his honor for outstanding athletic service at the high school. Daniels earned his bachelor and master’s degrees from Austin Peay State (2004 and 2006). Before coming to KU, Daniels was an athletic equipment intern at Villanova. He enjoys bowling and listening to music. He is a member of AEMA and was the winner of the Frank and Gladys E. Buhler Scholarship in Health and Human Performance. Carie Gallagher is the administrative assistant for Kansas’ Olympic sports. Her role includes the responsibility of handling travel materials, team receipts and cash advances for when teams go on the road. When she’s not overseeing travel expenses, Gallagher prepares all of the competition rosters prior to the teams traveling, as well as, organizing recruiting books for perspective athletes. The De Pere, Wisconsin native came to Kansas a decade ago where she first served in the business office and Williams Education Fund. She is currently serving her fourth year as an administrative assistant. Gallagher ran cross country at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay as a student-athlete. With dreams of becoming professional violinist, she studied music and arts during her collegiate career. Carie and her husband, Philip, have two English Springer Spaniels, Bailey and Tucker, that they consider their children. Before coming to KU, Gallagher helped design and sell jewelry for 15 years.

Dr. Bernie Kish is a lecturer in Sport Management in the School of Education at the University of Kansas. Prior to this appointment in the Fall of 2005, he served as the first Executive Director of the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Indiana, for 10 years. He also worked in the University of Kansas Athletics Department from 1992 until 1995. A career military officer, he served in the US Army for over 29 years, completing his service as a Full Colonel. His service included tours in Vietnam and Cambodia plus two, four-year tours in the Federal Republic of Germany as well as several stateside assignments. Kish is a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a Master’s Degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and a Doctorate in Higher Education from the University of Kansas. Kish and his wife, Judy, make their home in Lawrence. They have two daughters; Keri, an attorney in Kansas City, Missouri and Kathryn Hayman, a public relations and marketing director in Beverly Hills, California.

Kevin McCarty joined Kansas Athletics in August, 2011 and serves as the department’s interactive web designer. He is in charge of enhancing the look and functionality of KUAthletics.com and assisting with the department’s digital media efforts. McCarty came to Kansas after spending the 2010-11 school year as the director of athletic communications at Angelo State University. While at Angelo State he oversaw the publicity efforts of the school’s 13-sport program, the school’s athletic website and social media initiatives. His media relations career includes student assistant stops at Oklahoma State, Hutchinson Community College and Kansas State before a graduate assistant position at Illinois State and the full-time position at ASU. McCarty also spent time as a web manager/ assistant general manager at the Mineral Wells Steam of the Texas Collegiate baseball league and as a sports reporter at the Hutchinson News. McCarty graduated from Kansas State with a public relations degree in 2008 and earned a Master’s degree in sport management from Illinois State in 2010. Haley Molden is serving her first year formally on the coaching staff but is no stranger to leading the team as team captain and the team’s “Director of Fun” through much of her career. Molden has taken her bubbly personality and positive outlook to local club teams Mills Farm Mustangs of Overland Park, Kansas and Ad Astra Area Aquatics of Lawrence, Kansas during summer 2016. In her time as an athlete at KU, Molden set a record in the 200 freestyle and the 800 freestyle relay. She placed in the top-five in her four events at the Big 12 Championship during her senior year. She tallied 12 top-three finishes in her final season with the Jayhawks. Molden put up second-fastest times for the team her last three seasons. She made the Academic All-Big 12 team, Athletic Director’s and Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Rolls twice. Molden finished her last year of eligibility helping the Jayhawks to the team’s highest point tally at the 2016 Big 12 Championships. Her role as a student coach is the last step in earning her degree in exercise science.

Beth Morford is certified in upper extremity Active Release Technique (2015), integrative and structural massage and bodywork, on-site & event massage, trigger point therapy, sports massage, Strain-Counterstain Technique, deep tissue massage, and pregnancy massage. She has been an active certified therapist since April 2004. Morford attended Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas, and the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas, while later deciding to pursue a career in massage therapy. She attended school at the Professional Fitness Institute in Olathe, Kansas. After graduating, she got a job as a sports massage therapist in the sports medicine & training facility at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. There, she worked on the football team, swimming team, tennis players, track, and cross country runners. Her experience within the athletic training room, alongside athletic trainers and the team physicians, gave her specific knowledge in acute and chronic injuries that very few massage practitioners ever get a chance to acquire. Since moving back and settling down near Lawrence, Kansas, she has been working on local professional and collegiate athletes, lifetime athletes, and regular clientele in Baldwin City and Lawrence.

Andrew Roman enters his third year as the Kansas swimming and diving team manager. His role as the team manager includes assisting with meets, making sure the team has all necessary equipment and helping the coaching staff. Roman is currently a student at the University of Kansas and is studying mechanical engineering. He plans to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in December 2016. The Lawrence, Kansas prduct was a member of the swimming and diving team for Free State High School. Roman competed in a variety of events for the Firebirds, but focused his training on the distance and individual medley races.

James Saat enters his third year as a student assistant for the Kansas Athletics communications department. He helped as a student assistant with the men’s basketball program his first year before taking on the responsibilities of the primary contact for women’s golf during the 2015-16 season. This year Saat will head the communications efforts for the women’s swimming and diving team. As the sport contact, Saat works alongside the coaches and athletes in efforts to promote and inform fans and media about the Jayhawks’ swimming and diving program. Currently in his final year of undergraduate studies, the Flemington, New Jersey native will earn a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Finance and Sport Management in May 2017. After graduation he will seek a career in college athletics. Saat has an older sister, Sammie.

Gary Vancil came to KU in December 2014 as the Aquatic Facility Operator for Robinson Natatorium. His job duties include balancing the chemicals, handling all of the mechanics underneath the pool and cleaning the pool.

Debbie Van Saun joined the Kansas Athletics staff as an Associate Athletics Director and Senior Woman Administrator in August 2007. On July 2011, Van Saun was named Senior Associate Athletics Director.

Vancil earned a bachelor’s degree from McPherson College and began his career in pharmaceutical manufacturing for 29 years before heading to Lawrence, Kansas in 2010. He took on a part-time job at Home Depot and enjoyed some free time before joining the KU staff.

At Kansas, Van Saun directly supervises selected sports and provides administrative guidance to those coaches and their programs. Those selected sports include women’s basketball, rowing, men’s golf, women’s golf, softball, and swimming and diving.

The Sabetha, Kansas native and his wife, Erin, have three children: Brian, Katie and Scott. When not fixing the pool, Vancil enjoys spending time with his family and three granddaughters: Addison, Jacie and Tessa.

In addition, Van Saun oversees Student-Athlete Development, Sports Medicine, Travel, Risk Management, and works closely with studentathletes regarding financial aid, housing, summer school, fifth-year aid and other pertinent areas. It is Van Saun’s responsibility to monitor Kansas Athletics’ efforts to comply with Title IX and NCAA gender equity principles, as well as monitor NCAA governance issues and contribute to the University’s position on new NCAA legislation. Van Saun came to KU from the City of Lawrence, where she served in numerous positions: assistant city manager, assistant utilities director, assistant finance director and collections supervisor. Her roles with the City date back to 1979 and concluded when she came to KU in 2007. Van Saun earned two degrees from KU, a Bachelor’s in Education and a Master’s in Public Administration.

Gray-Little serves on the Board of Directors for the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, and will conclude a term as chair of that board this year. Dr. Sheahon (SHAY-un) Zenger’s genuine care for coaches and student-athletes has hallmarked his career in intercollegiate athletics. That care, which he has exhibited since his arrival as Athletics Director in January 2011, has helped KU’s coaches and student-athletes achieve outstanding performances on both the conference and national stages. Highlights include: • A National Championship for the Women’s Outdoor Track & Field team, and seven individual national championships. • NCAA Final Four and Elite 8 appearances for Men’s Basketball and six Big 12 Conference regular-season championships, raising that streak of titles to 12. • NCAA Final Four and Sweet 16 (and four straight NCAA) appearances for Volleyball. • Two NCAA Sweet 16 appearances for Women’s Basketball. • NCAA Tournament appearances for Softball (twice), Baseball, Soccer, Men’s and Women’s Golf, and Tennis. • Four National Coach-of-the-Year awards – Stanley Redwine, women’s track and field; Bill Self, men’s basketball; Ray Bechard, volleyball, and Laura Kuhn (assistant coach), volleyball – and several Big 12 Conference Coach-of-the-Year awards – Self (three times), Redwine (three times), Bechard (three times), and Clark Campbell, swimming (twice). In addition, third-year tennis coach Todd Chapman was named 2016 Coach of the Year for the Central Region after leading the Jayhawks to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 17 years. During 2015-16, 12 KU teams were represented in NCAA postseason competition, the most-ever KU appearances in one year.

Zenger has spearheaded some $80 million in new Kansas Athletics facilities as well – improvements he expects will help KU’s coaches and student-athletes continue their run of outstanding performances. Notable among these is the completion of the DeBruce Center, the new permanent home of James Naismith’s original “Rules of Basket Ball.” In addition, a $2 million renovation of the football locker room is now underway. The track surrounding the football field was removed in summer 2014, replaced with new artificial turf, bringing the turf to within 10 feet of the stands. A $1 million renovation of the Jayhawks’ Sports Medicine Facility has provided modernized rehabilitation, an x-ray room and treatment areas. Fall 2015 saw the opening of McCarthy Hall, which houses the men’s basketball team and an equal number of distinguished non-student-athletes. The beautiful new, nationally acclaimed Rock Chalk Park, home to KU soccer, softball, and track and field, has already hosted its first NCAA meet, and more are on the horizon. And the soon-to-be-completed Jayhawk Tennis Center, an indoor-outdoor complex at Rock Chalk Park, will house the KU tennis team. Stressing a culture of competitiveness and citizenship, Zenger has instituted KU Leads, a student-athlete development program dedicated to fostering committed leaders and supporting career development. Zenger came to KU after serving for five years as athletics director at Illinois State University, helping steer ISU Athletics to a place of prominence in the Missouri Valley Conference. ISU reached new heights in fundraising, academics and community service during Zenger’s tenure there.

Zenger’s career took several turns before landing in athletics administration. He coached football at Drake University right after graduation; he then joined Bill Snyder’s staff at Kansas State, serving in key roles as assistant recruiting coordinator and director of football operations. He also coached at South Florida and Wyoming. Zenger earned two degrees from Kansas State before coming to KU to earn his Ph.D. in educational policy and leadership, strengthening his understanding of university leadership at the highest levels. He served as KSU’s associate athletics director for development before becoming Athletics Director at Illinois State in 2005. Zenger recently chaired KU’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Advisory Group, and also serves on the university’s Brand Leadership Committee. He served for three years on the NCAA Division I Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement and on two NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Division committees. He was also a member of the Executive Committee of NACDA’s Division I FCS Athletic Directors Association. He is married to the former Pam McAnarney; they have three children: Luke, Abby and Jake.

2015-16 Season Review As Kansas bid farewell to its four seniors – Laura Bilsborrow, Bryce Hinde, Chelsie Miller and Haley Molden - the Jayhawks closed out arguably one of the most successful four-year stints in historic fashion. Two years removed from a program-best second-place finish at the 2014 Big 12 Championships, KU found its way back into the top-two at this year’s conference meet, while scoring its most team points in league history. Having only lost two seniors from a season ago and adding five impact freshmen, the Jayhawks headed into the 2015-16 season with high expectations and certainly lived up to them. The team finished the season with a 9-4 dual record, tallying six of its victories at home. It was the fifth time in Head Coach Clark Campbell’s 14-year tenure that Kansas registered more than eight dual victories, and the second time in the last two years. Kansas’ success in the pool was recognized by the conference as Campbell was named Big 12 Coach of the Year and Miller earned Big 12 Swimmer of the Year accolades. In addition to the team’s successful regular season and league meet, Miller received All-America First Team honors with a top-eight finish in the 400-yard individual medley at NCAAs. The Houston, Texas native’s performance was the first time in more than 20 years that a Jayhawk finished in the top-eight at nationals. “We knew this team was going to be good,” Campbell said. “We had a really good senior class, the sophomores and juniors were strong - a year older and wiser, and then a really good group of freshmen. We knew we were going to be competitive. They met our expectations and that says a lot.” The first glimpse at how good the squad was going to be was the Crimson and Blue intrasquad meet. It was the rookies’ first opportunity to race, giving themselves, their teammates and the coaches a chance to see their potential. The senior captains, who were split into two groups, drafted their respective teams. The Blue squad, headed by Bilsborrow and Molden, took a 59-35 victory, boosted by a pair of wins from freshman Bishop. “I just got up there and honestly surprised myself,” Bishop said. “It was my

first meet so I was a little nervous, but it was fun because we were just racing against our teammates so that took a little pressure off. It really gave me confidence for the season.” After three more weeks of training, the Jayhawks opened up their regular season with a double dual against Denver and Missouri State (Oct. 23-24), during which they beat the Bears, 277-69, but fell to a nationally-ranked Pioneers team, 188-162. It was KU’s sole loss in Robinson Natatorium all year. Miller was a major contributor for the Jayhawks as she claimed four event wins during the two-day meet, including lowering her own pool record in the 400-yard individual medley. Angell recorded a pair of double dual career-bests in the 50- and 100yard backstrokes. Freshman Libby Walker had a strong start to her Kansas career by chalking up her first individual win of the season in the 1,000-yard freestyle, and a third-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly. Campbell used the Intrasquad and Denver/Missouri State performances to put together the traveling squad for an unorthodox trip to TCU. The team left Lawrence early the day of its meet in Fort Worth, Texas, giving them little rest or time to settle in for the contest. Despite having the odds against them, the Jayhawks used high energy and determination to trounce the Horned Frogs, 178-119.

HALEY BISHOP

Fort Worth product Madison Straight had a sweet homecoming, winning the 200-yard backstroke and the 200-yard individual medley. The sophomore also recorded a top-three finish in the 200 free, contributing points in all three of her individual events.

“Flying to TCU and back on the same day, we weren’t sure how we were going to react,” junior Pia Pavlic said. “The energy we had was absolutely amazing, that was probably one of my favorite meets the whole season. It was great, and Madison Straight killed it, she was on fire, which made us go.”

Despite finishing second, KU recorded multiple career and season-best marks throughout the meet. Junior Yulya Kuchkarova swam a pair of careerbest marks in the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes as well as claiming wins and meet records in both events. Miller and Bishop headlined the meet for the Jayhawks as Miller was named the Big Challenge MVP and was joined by Bishop on the All-Star Team. The two combined for seven ‘A’ finals appearances. “It’s really the first time that everyone comes together and there is a little bit of a common goal of swimming fast,” Campbell said. “It’s just that ideal preview of what’s to come at Big 12s when it is the championship season. So we have a little mini championship season and they get to see how the team reacts in a swimming invitational format, which is important.” After the Big Challenge, the team began an intense winter training regimen. Kansas utilized its Christmas break to prepare for the championship portion of the season. After a week of three-a-days, the squad headed to the Sunshine State for a pair of double duals and a chance to train outside of Robinson Natatorium. While in Florida the Jayhawks were swept in their first double dual against FIU (150.5-148.5) and NC State (161-110), but rebounded for a split less than 24 hours later, losing to Miami (178-120) and beating Rutgers (176.5-123.5).

When they weren’t in the water training, they were busy with other activities such as volunteering at local schools and practicing their reflex skills while feeding Tarpon. “Other than Big 12s, it’s the second most important time for the team,” Campbell said. “It’s such a good time for the training part, but it’s also such a big time to come together as a team. The trip is so vital in the physical and probably more importantly the mental health of the team.” Coming back from their training trip, the Jayhawks continued to dominate in their home pool. KU swept its final three home meets, winning 40 consecutive events inside Robison Natatorium. During that streak, Kansas recorded wins over William Jewell, Tabor, Morningside and a televised dual against Nebraska-Omaha. The Jayhawks wrapped up the regular season with a dual against conference rival, Iowa State. Having lost its last two duals in Ames, Kansas headed into Beyer Pool with vengence in mind. KU got out to hot start, winning its first four events of the two-day dual. The freshman duo of Walker and Bishop claimed three of the victories. Walker won the 200 fly and 1,000 free while Bishop won the 50 free.

Kansas entered the Big 12 Championship meet with fresh wounds after a rough start to the 2015 league meet when the first relay of the week was disqualified for a false start on the blocks. The Jayhawks showed no signs of remnants from the year before, jumping off to a quick start while claiming second in both of the relays on the first day of competition.

“Iowa State was a huge meet for both me individually and the team,” Bishop said. “I went crazy fast in the 100 fly, crazy fast in the 50 free and it was an eye opener for me. It was right before we taper and at that point I felt like I was ready for Big 12s.”

The freshmen continued to shine on the second day of competition, with Bishop earning another first-place finish in the 100 fly and Breonna Barker taking the 100 free. With contributions from multiple Jayhawks, Kansas won, 172.5-127.5, to conclude the regular season.

Aside from the pair of meets, KU made its way to Key Largo, Florida for an additional week of training and team bonding. While on the beach, the team changed pace and trained long course instead of its traditional short-course

Kansas used tough competition in its first three meets to prepare for the mid-season invite, the Big Challenge. This year, the Jayhawks hosted a three-day championship-style meet at Topeka’s Capitol Federal Natatorium where the swimmers were allowed to wear their technical suits in hopes to help prepare them for the Big 12 Championship. The meet featured six teams, two Big 12 schools, two Big Ten schools and a pair of mid-majors who all competed for both individual and conference crowns. Nebraska won the meet, outscoring Kansas, 969-892.

On the second day Miller notched her fifth school record with a swim of 4:43.07 in the 500 free, shattering the previous record by more than five seconds. The future Big 12 Swimmer of the Year also went on to lower her 200 fly record on the final day. Miller’s five school records are the most held by any Jayhawk.

KU continued its strong outing with three second-place finishes in the individual events on the third day of the meet. After a head-to-head race between Pavlic and Bishop for second place in the 100 fly, Pavlic edgedout Bishop by one-hundredth of a second, earning a spot in Kansas’ alltime records with the fifth-fastest time in Kansas history (53.80). Miller earned her second top-two finish in the 400 IM, while Kuchkarova took silver in the 100 back. The Jayhawks secured their historic Big 12 finish during the final event of the meet with a season-best mark in the 400 freestyle relay. After three Jayhawks placed in the top-five of the 200 fly - Miller finishing second, Bishop placing fourth and Walker placing fifth - Kansas just had to finish the final relay to break the previous point total barrier, which they did with a third-place finish. Kansas had a total of 25 top-eight individual finishes along with 20 point-contributing swims in ‘B’ finals. “This year our team was really confident in our abilities,” junior Gretchen Pocisk, who registered two lifetime-best marks in the breaststroke events, said. “We were definitely conscious of safe starts, but we went into it with so much energy and excitement. I think that showed other teams that we can have fun, but still compete with the best of them.” The conference meet marked the end of the season for everyone except Miller and a pair of divers who competed at the NCAA Zone D Championships. Miller earned a bid to NCAAs in four events – 200 IM, 400 IM, 200 Fly and 500 free – but elected to not compete in the 500 free. On the first day Miller swam a season-best mark in the 200 IM, placing 42nd. She went on to have a historic performance at her third consecutive nationals, finishing eighth in the 400 IM. Miller concluded her collegiate career with the 200 fly on the final day of NCAAs, placing 41st overall.
