“YOU COME TO KU FOR THE TRADITION, AND YOU LEAVE A PART OF IT.” DANNY MANNING
1
Hail to Old KU!

4.
THE K RING The K Ring symbolizes a uniquely shared experience between generations of varsity letter winners at the University of Kansas. As a Jayhawk you are expected to uphold tradition and retain the characteristics of a champion while continuing the create your own legacy.
5.
WAVING THE WHEAT Since the early days of KU sports, it has been a ritual of Jayhawk fans to “wave the wheat” following every Kansas scoring drive in football. The tradition also extends to Allen Fieldhouse where fans “wave the wheat” when an opponent fouls out and at the conclusion of every Jayhawk victory. The ritual consists of fans waving their arms in the air, an activity which, when done by a large crowd, resembles a breezy Kansas wheat field.
6.
THE ROCK CHALK CHANT The Rock Chalk Chant has been the battle cry of KU fans for more than 80 years. This strange, traditional chant, which is among the most famous of all college cheers, was started by E.H.S. Bailey, a professor of chemistry. On May 21, 1886, Bailey submitted the cheer to his club.
O
CAMPANILE HILL Campanile Hill forms the picturesque backdrop for Memorial Stadium. On a sunny fall Saturday, the “Hill” is transformed into a congregating place for watching Jayhawk football, sunning and barbequing. Potter Lake, just to the southwest of Memorial Stadium and at the bottom of Campanile Hill, adds to the beauty of the Kansas campus.

THE ALMA MATER In 1891, professor George Barlow Penny searched for a school song for the Glee and Mandolin Club to sing on its tour through Kansas to Denver and back. No one responded with an original song in answer to his appeals. Just before departure, he thought of the Cornell song “Far Above Cayuga’s Waters.” Hastily changing a few words, he gave it to the glee club men to sing on the trip. He did not expect the song to be used after their return, but “Crimson and the Blue” still goes on. The music is not Cornell’s but an old English folk tune, “Annie Lisle.”

“GIVE THE WORLD THE BEST YOU’VE GOT AND THE BEST WILL COME BACK TO YOU.”
THE NICKNAME: JAYHAWK The University of Kansas is the home of the Jayhawk, a mythical bird with a fascinating history. Its origin is rooted in the historic struggles of Kansas settlers. The term “Jayhawk” was probably coined about 1848. Accounts of its use appeared from Illinois to Texas. The name combines two birds - the blue jay, a noisy, quarrelsome thing known to rob other nests, and the sparrow hawk, a stealthy hunter.

There, his teams achieved national rankings of No. 17 (men) and No. 15 (women), and made back-to-back appearances in the NAIA Tournament. Chapman earned success as a head coach at the high school level as well, leading Wichita Falls (Texas) High School to three-straight Class 4A state quarterfinals (2006-08). As a player at Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma, (1994-98), Chapman helped his team to four NCAA Division II Tournaments and a national ranking as high as No. 12. The two-time Lone Star Conference Scholar-Athlete achieved a national ranking in doubles as high as 17. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach (1998-99) for his alma mater’s men’s and women’s teams, both of whom were ranked in the Top 25. Before joining the Gonzaga staff, Lilley was a volunteer assistant coach at Purdue. With the Boilermakers in 2012-13, the squad reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history. In addition, the team achieved a national ranking as high as No. 14, also the highest in school history.
National recognition is nothing new for Lilley as she had an accomplished playing career at both Kentucky (freshman and sophomore) and Georgia Tech (junior and senior). As a player, Lilley was ranked in both singles and doubles competition with highs of No. 67 and No. 6, respectively.
Kansas women’s tennis head coach Todd Chapman added an integral piece to his program when he announced the hiring of Caroline Lilley as assistant coach on May 13, 2015. 2015-16 REVIEW
Jayhawk Tennis Returns to NCAAs for First Time Since 1999
In her debut season, Anastasia Rychagova set the tone early in the year by advancing to the ITA Central Regional finals where she faced highly-ranked Katrina Adamovic of Oklahoma State. Although she fell to Adamovic in the title match, Rychagova became the first Jayhawk to receive an at-large bid to the United States Tennis Association (UTSA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships since ITA began sponsoring the event in 2005. Kansas went 11-4 in nonconference play, but that was only preparation for what was to come in the tough Big 12 portion of the season. The Jayhawks began to set the pace early in the spring with six-straight wins, including a 4-1 win against the No. 36 Arkansas Razorbacks, and earned a program-high No. 23 ranking by the ITA on Feb. 23. Opening conference play against Baylor, the Jayhawks defeated the Lady Bears 4-3, ending
REVIEW
In his third year, head coach Todd Chapman led the Kansas women’s tennis team back to the national stage during the 2015-16 season. The Jayhawks started out strong in the fall and were able to maintain that strength in the spring and find their way into the program’s first NCAA Championship appearance in 17 years.
SUMMER COLLINS and MARIA JOSE CARDONA a 16-match losing streak that dated back to 2002. Next was a team the Jayhawks had fallen to in the past 27 matches – Texas. Kansas was able to top UT, 4-3, to earn its first-ever win against the Longhorns and move to 2-0 in league play. The Jayhawks went on the road and dropped matches at TCU and Texas Tech. They bounced back by winning four-straight Big 12 matches against West Virginia, Iowa State, Kansas State and Oklahoma before dropping the season finale against the 2015 Big 12 Champions, Oklahoma State. Kansas ended regular-season play ranked second in a five-way tie in the Big 12 standings.
Kansas entered the Big 12 Championship as the fourth-seed ready to face Baylor in the quarterfinals. KU earned its secondconsecutive win over Baylor by topping the Lady Bears, 4-2. The Jayhawks went on to play in their first semifinal match since 2002, but fell to Oklahoma State, who would later win the league crown. Boasting an impressive resume filled with marquee nonconference and Big 12 wins, the Jayhawks earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship for the first time in 17 years. Kansas traveled to California to take on UC Santa Barbara in the first round. The Jayhawks had just five players, due to injury, and tried to Kt Mj R O H

The outdoor courts have lights for evening matches and every court will have its own scoreboard. “I think the future with Kansas tennis is very bright,” said Chapman. “We have gotten to the point, as a coach I will never be satisfied, but at the end of the day if we do what we are supposed to do and play the way we want to play, we can live with the result.” SUMMER COLLINS keep the momentum from the season going, but were unable to top the Gauchos and fell, 4-3.

“To be at the point where we are disappointed with losing an NCAA Championship match, we are moving in the right direction,” said Chapman. “I could not be more excited about where we are as a program.”

The Jayhawks ended the 2015-16 season with an overall record of 17-8, the program’s most victories since claiming 21 in 1998. KU returns five players for the 2016-17 season, including standout Rychagova who finished ranked No. 70 and climbed as high as 45 during the season. She was named AllBig 12 First Team, a member of the Big 12 All-Freshman Team, and the Big 12 and ITA Central Region Freshman of the Year. Following Rychagova’s recognition, Chapman was named the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year. Nina Khmelnitckaia joined Rychagova on the Big 12 All-Freshman Team. Khmelnitckaia and her doubles partner, Janet Koch, were ranked as high as No. 67 during the season. The team recorded a 3.32 GPA with Maria Jose Cardona being one of 74 athletes to receive the 2016 Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award, the Big 12 Conference’s highest academic honor. 2016-17 OUTLOOK After ending a 17-year drought from the NCAA Tournament last season, fourth-year head coach and the 2016 ITA Central Region Coach of the Year Todd Chapman and the Kansas tennis program enter the 2016-17 season with expectations of turning postseason play
into a tradition rather than an aberration. The Jayhawks return four key pieces from last year’s team which ranked No. 33 nationally, notched a 17-8 overall mark and earned a second-place finish in the Big 12 Conference. Sophomores Anastasia
Rychagova (No. 1), Janet Koch (No. 3) and Nina Khmelnitckaia (No. 4), along with junior Summer Collins (No. 5), who accounted for two-thirds of KU’s singles lineup last year, return this season. “We’re excited about what we bring back from last
47
year’s team,” Chapman said. “I think we have a great nucleus with four girls coming back who started for us last year. We are excited about that piece and we are also excited about the three newcomers.” Rychagova posted the best debut season by a Jayhawk in school history. Named the 2016 Big 12 and ITA Central Regional Freshman of the Year, while also earning All-Big 12 First Team and Big 12 AllFreshman Team honors, Rychagova posted a 26-9 overall singles record from the No. 1 spot.
Khmelnitckaia, another member of the Big 12 AllFreshman Team, and Koch each collected 20-plus singles victories on the year which also spurred the program’s turnaround. “Nina was one of those players where as the season went on she got better,” Chapman said. “A lot of that had to do with on-court maturity and how to handle and channel her emotions in the right way. Physically, Nina is really, really strong and an imposing player on the court, once she gets the mental side down she is going to have a great year as well.” Koch paired up with Khmelnitckaia at No. 1 doubles and should enter the 2016-17 nationally ranked.

By returning four players in the lineup the expectations surrounding the Jayhawks are at new heights.

“Summer had a tale of two seasons last year,” Chapman said. “She had a great fall and then tailed off in the spring. She had some injuries late in the spring that kept her out of seven of the last eight matches. She has worked really hard and I know she is excited to get her game back to where she wants it and she will be a very important piece for us this spring.”
The Jayhawks open the fall campaign at the Little Rock Invitational in Little Rock, Arkansas from September 23-25. “We have six tournaments on our (fall) schedule and the plan is for each (student-athlete) to play in four of the six events,” Chapman said. “We have a great mix of teams from all over the country. We also have a couple of events that we hope some of our girls qualify for, the All-American in early October and the ITA Indoor that Anastasia was able to qualify for last year. That will give us a chance to play against the best of the best.” In addition to those ITA events, Kansas will be represented in the ITA Regional Championship in Minneapolis in mid-October, the Roberta Alison Fall Classic in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in late October and the Notre Dame Fall Invitational in South Bend, Indiana in early November. For a complete fall schedule, click here. “The other four events we have on the schedule are challenging as well,” Chapman said. “There won’t be a tournament we go to where we are the best team there. That is always the plan to push our players in a way in the fall that gets us out of our comfort zone and definitely teach us the areas we need to get better in and develop in.” With a full schedule and roster, Chapman and the Jayhawks now just have to put it all together on the court. asdfag “We have a really talented group, but now we have to put the work in,” Chapman said. “Just because we have talent doesn’t mean we will achieve it. This is probably the best starting point we have had in my time here from a talent standpoint.” Considering last season marked the best endpoint for the Jayhawk program in 17 years, the 2016-17 campaign should be fun to follow.

“Janet was really an anchor for us in the lineup,” Chapman said. “She had a fantastic summer individually and her game is continuing to grow. We look to her this season to continue to develop, and as she continues to learn how effective her game is and game style is and continues to gain confidence in herself, great things are going to come from her this season.” As the lone junior on the squad, Summer Collins looks to rebound from an up and down year last season.
“The biggest part that has changed is the expectation,” Chapman said. “Three of those girls, in their first year at Kansas, made the NCAA Tournament, so they don’t have the mindset that this hasn’t been done in 17 years, but rather we have been here one year and we did it once. That is kind of the mindset we took through last year to start that new tradition. We are definitely going in the right direction from a culture standpoint, but we have some room to grow.” Helping Chapman grow that culture will be the addition of the three newcomers – senior transfer Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum and freshmen Tatiana “Tanya” Nikolaeva and Maria Toran Ribes. Bernard-Feigenbaum, who posted 29 singles victories and 28 doubles wins during the 201415 season at Purdue, after sitting out last season with a medical redshirt, played all matches at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles for the Boilermakers. “Tess has great experience at the top of the lineups in both singles and doubles,” Chapman said. “Being a senior, I think she has high expectations of herself too, but we expect her to come in and help anchor the top of our lineup in singles and doubles. What will that number will be? There is a lot of time between now and January. That is something she embraces and wants. She has high goals and expectations for herself and wants her senior year to be a special one.” Although new to collegiate tennis, Nikolaeva and Toran Ribes bring extensive resumes to Mt. Oread. Nikolaeva hails from Togliatti, Russia and Toran Ribes calls Algemesi, Spain home. The duo boasts top-10 junior rankings in each of their respective countries. “Both (freshmen) have extensive international experience and come in really battle-tested for freshmen,” Chapman said. “They will be like last year’s freshmen in that I knew they were good, but I didn’t know (how good) until they were in the team environment and put in those pressure situations. We will see where they go, but I know they have the ability to make immediate impacts in our lineup.”
OUTLOOK
“Anastasia had a fantastic freshman year,” Chapman said. “The sky is the limit for her. She works extremely hard and puts a lot of pressure on herself. She would be really disappointed if she doesn’t qualify for the NCAA Tournament individually, so we expect great things from her.”

UNIVERSITY CHANCELLOR Since arriving at the University of Kansas in 2009, Bernadette Gary-Little has advanced KU’s mission of lifting students and society by educating leaders, building healthy communities and making discoveries that change the world. Through the Bold Aspirations strategic plan, KU is changing the way it prepares students for success. It’s fostering research and scholarship across all disciplines, and sharing the benefits of a flagship university with the state and world.

Gray-Little led the effort to create new admission standards for the University of Kansas. These new standards go into effect for freshmen entering KU in the fall of 2016 and will give students and families a more-accurate picture of what it takes to be successful at a research university. Under Chancellor Gray-Little’s leadership, the university has also revamped financial aid, creating four-year renewable scholarships and expanding the Jayhawk Generations Scholarship. And it has launched its first university-wide curriculum, the KU Core, which incorporates both classes and experiences, making KU a leader among its national peers.
Gray-Little has also been instrumental to Far Above: The Campaign for Kansas, KU Endowment’s $1.2 billion comprehensive fundraising campaign. Additionally, the university’s Changing for Excellence initiative is making administrative operations more efficient, with the savings being invested in education and research. As chancellor, Gray-Little is the chief executive officer of the university, overseeing campuses in Lawrence, Kansas City, Overland Park, Salina and Wichita, as well as research and educational centers in Garden City, Hays, Parsons, Pittsburg, Topeka and Yoder. Gray-Little serves on the Board of Directors for the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, and will conclude a term as chair of that board this year. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and begins a five-year service on the National Institutes of Health Advisory Committee for the Director in 2017. Prior to becoming KU’s 17th Chancellor, GrayLittle held leadership positions at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, including executive vice chancellor and provost.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Dr. Sheahon (SHAY-un) Zenger’s genuine care for coaches and student-athletes has hallmarked his career in intercollegiate athletics. That care, which he has exhibited since his arrival as Athletics Director in January 2011, has helped KU’s coaches and student-athletes achieve outstanding performances on both the conference and national stages. Highlights include:

During 2015-16, 12 KU teams were represented in NCAA postseason competition, the most-ever KU appearances in one year.
Zenger came to KU after serving for five years as athletics director at Illinois State University, helping steer ISU Athletics to a place of prominence in the Missouri Valley Conference. ISU reached new heights in fundraising, academics and community service during Zenger’s tenure there. Zenger’s career took several turns before landing in athletics administration. He coached football at Drake University right after graduation; he then joined Bill Snyder’s staff at Kansas State, serving in key roles as assistant recruiting coordinator and director of football operations. He also coached at South Florida and Wyoming. Zenger earned two degrees from Kansas State before coming to KU to earn his Ph.D. in educational policy and leadership, strengthening his understanding of university leadership at the highest levels. He served as KSU’s associate athletics director for development before becoming Athletics Director at Illinois State in 2005.

Zenger recently chaired KU’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Advisory Group, and also serves on the university’s Brand Leadership Committee. He served for three years on the NCAA Division I Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement and on two NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Division committees. He was also a member of the Executive Committee of NACDA’s Division I FCS Athletic Directors Association. He is married to the former Pam McAnarney; they have three children: Luke, Abby and Jake.
Kt R O
Zenger has spearheaded some $80 million in new Kansas Athletics facilities as well – improvements he expects will help KU’s coaches and student-athletes continue their run of outstanding performances. Notable among these is the completion of the DeBruce Center, the new permanent home of James Naismith’s original “Rules of Basket Ball.” In addition, a $2 million renovation of the football locker room is now underway. The track surrounding the football field was removed in summer 2014, replaced with new artificial turf, bringing the turf to within 10 feet of the stands. A $1 million renovation of the Jayhawks’ Sports Medicine Facility has provided modernized rehabilitation, an x-ray room and treatment areas. Fall 2015 saw the opening of McCarthy Hall, which houses
Stressing a culture of competitiveness and citizenship, Zenger has instituted KU Leads, a student-athlete development program dedicated to fostering committed leaders and supporting career development.

NCAA COMPLIANCE As a fan of KU Athletics, it is important to become familiar with NCAA, Big 12 and Kansas Athletics Compliance rules. Please review the following information as a brief guide to NCAA compliance and feel free to contact our office at any time. We appreciate your support and cooperation. Rock Chalk Jayhawk!
*This list is not exhaustive. Please contact the Kansas Athletics Compliance Office if you have any questions about your possible status as a booster. Once an individual or entity is deemed to be a booster it carries that status forever. PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETES A prospective student-athlete is anyone who has entered the ninth grade. Impermissible activities with a prospective student-athlete include: • Having any type of recruiting communication including conversations, letters and messages. • Conducting any evaluation of their physical ability on behalf of the Kansas coaching staff. • Contacting the prospective student-athlete. Getting involved without consent from the Compliance Office could jeopardize the eligibility of the prospective student-athlete. Kansas Athletics is responsible for the actions of its boosters and fans and is always available to answer any questions regarding permissible recruiting activities. EMPLOYMENT OF A STUDENT-ATHLETE Employment of a student-athlete is permissible, provided all six of the following conditions are met: 1. Student-athlete is only paid for the work actually performed; 2. Student-athlete is paid at the rate commensurate with the going rate in that locale for similar services; 3. Student-athlete may not be compensated in any manner for any value or utility that he or she may have for an employer because of any publicity, reputation, fame, or personal following that he/she may have because of his or her athletics ability;

EXTRA BENEFITS An extra benefit is any special gift or arrangement provided to a student-athlete, or student-athlete’s friends or family members which is not available to the general KU student body or the general public.
