THE K RING The K Ring symbolizes a uniquely shared experience between generations of varsity letter winners at the University of Kansas. As a Jayhawk you are expected to uphold tradition and retain the characteristics of a champion while continuing the create your own legacy.

5.

WAVING THE WHEAT Since the early days of KU sports, it has been a ritual of Jayhawk fans to “wave the wheat” following every Kansas scoring drive in football. The tradition also extends to Allen Fieldhouse where fans “wave the wheat” when an opponent fouls out and at the conclusion of every Jayhawk victory. The ritual consists of fans waving their arms in the air, an activity which, when done by a large crowd, resembles a breezy Kansas wheat field.

6.

THE ROCK CHALK CHANT The Rock Chalk Chant has been the battle cry of KU fans for more than 80 years. This strange, traditional chant, which is among the most famous of all college cheers, was started by E.H.S. Bailey, a professor of chemistry. On May 21, 1886, Bailey submitted the cheer to his club.

CAMPANILE HILL Campanile Hill forms the picturesque backdrop for Memorial Stadium. On a sunny fall Saturday, the “Hill” is transformed into a congregating place for watching Jayhawk football, sunning and barbequing. Potter Lake, just to the southwest of Memorial Stadium and at the bottom of Campanile Hill, adds to the beauty of the Kansas campus.

THE ALMA MATER In 1891, professor George Barlow Penny searched for a school song for the Glee and Mandolin Club to sing on its tour through Kansas to Denver and back. No one responded with an original song in answer to his appeals. Just before departure, he thought of the Cornell song “Far Above Cayuga’s Waters.” Hastily changing a few words, he gave it to the glee club men to sing on the trip. He did not expect the song to be used after their return, but “Crimson and the Blue” still goes on. The music is not Cornell’s but an old English folk tune, “Annie Lisle.”

THE NICKNAME: JAYHAWK The University of Kansas is the home of the Jayhawk, a mythical bird with a fascinating history. Its origin is rooted in the historic struggles of Kansas settlers. The term “Jayhawk” was probably coined about 1848. Accounts of its use appeared from Illinois to Texas. The name combines two birds - the blue jay, a noisy, quarrelsome thing known to rob other nests, and the sparrow hawk, a stealthy hunter.

In 2008, Redwine coached 12 track & field AllAmericans, which was then the most he had coached in one season in his time at Kansas. In the summer of 2008 in Beijing, China, Redwine athletes Scott Russell and Nickesha Anderson represented their respective countries in the Games of the XXIX (29th) Olympiad. Russell finished in 10th place for Canada in the men’s javelin, while Anderson was an alternate on Jamaica’s women’s 4x100-meter relay team.

H/R

In 2010, Redwine mentored eight athletes to 10 All-America honors with five garnering the elite status during the indoor season and five more picking up the honor during the outdoor season. Behind NCAA Champion Jordan Scott’s performance, the KU men’s team finished seventh at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Scott claimed the pole vault title for the first time in his career, while freshman thrower Mason Finley took home second place in both the shot put and discus at the NCAA outdoor meet and also earned indoor honors in the shot put. The

W

The last four seasons marked perhaps the most successful stretch in Redwine’s Kansas coaching career, mentoring the women’s track & field team to numerous individual accolades with the most notable being the program’s first NCAA team championship in 2013. Lindsay Vollmer became Kansas’ first female NCAA Champion with her win in the heptathlon as 16 other Jayhawks earned

Already a member of the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame, Stanley Redwine is a living legend in Jayhawk country and one of the most well-respected coaches in the United States. A former All-American himself at the University of Arkansas, Redwine has coached 121 individual conference champions, 191 athletes to All-America honors, 16 individual national champions and two teams to Big 12 titles. After the historical season for the 201213 women’s track & field team, Redwine was named the NCAA’s Women’s Head Coach of the Year for the first time in his career. Redwine has coached 17 individual National Champions (16 at Kansas), 174 All-Americans (167 at KU), eight Olympians (all at KU) and 23 National Championship teams between his years as head coach at Kansas and Tulsa and an assistant coach at Arkansas.

He oversaw Egor Agafonov to his secondconsecutive National Championship in the weight throw, as well as his fifth and sixth All-America honors (weight throw, hammer throw) and his third-consecutive Big 12 Championship, in both the hammer throw and the weight throw. In the 2008 indoor track & field season, Kansas was just one of 10 schools to have both its men’s and women’s teams finish in the top 25 at the NCAA Championships. At the NCAA Outdoor Championships, senior Crystal Manning (long jump and triple jump) and junior Nickesha Anderson (100 meters and 200 meters) each won two All-America honors. Only one other woman (Candace Mason) had previously accomplished the feat in KU history. As an athlete, Redwine placed his name in the Arkansas history books as a 400-meter, 600yard and 800-meter runner from 1980-83. Redwine was a four-time All-American and was named UA’s Outstanding Track Athlete all four of his years in Fayetteville. Redwine went on to spend nine years as an assistant coach at his alma mater. During his tenure, the Razorbacks captured nine consecutive NCAA Championships and 22 titles from 1985 to 1994 in both track & field and cross country. He helped produce 14 All-Americans and two NCAA Champions in the hurdle and sprint events. Among those All-Americans were two-time 400-meter NCAA indoor and outdoor champion Calvin Davis, three-time 400-meter and 500-meter NCAA champion Robbie Haley and seven-time All-American sprinter Jimmy French. His success as an assistant earned him the head coaching position at the University of Tulsa in 1994. In six years at Tulsa, Redwine’s athletes broke more than 70 school records, most on multiple occasions. He produced 11 NCAA qualifiers and Tulsa’s first-ever AllAmerican. On May 25, 2000, Redwine was rewarded for his efforts by being hired as the head coach at the University of Kansas. The Jayhawks’ track & field program has prospered ever since, as he has restored the tradition of KU’s illustrious past. Professionally, Redwine retired from competition in 1996 after he finished fifth in the 800-meter run at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a U.S. Olympic Trial qualifier five-consecutive times from 1980 to 1996 and was a two-time silver medalist in the 800-meter run at the Goodwill Games

in 1986 and 1994. He won bronze medals at the Pan American Games in 1983 and 1987. Redwine was also a World Championship team member in 1985, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993 and a two-time U.S. 800-meter champion. Redwine earned his bachelor’s degree in administrative management from the University of Arkansas in 1985. He and his wife, Jacqueline, have three children: Crysta, Stanley Jr., and Alexa.

Michael Whittlesey is in his ninth season as assistant coach for cross country and middle distance/distance running at Kansas. In his time in Lawrence, Whittlesey has made a huge impact with both the cross country and track programs. In his eight seasons with the Jayhawks, he has guided six athletes to appearances at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, including Sharon Lokedi, who became the second All-American in the cross country program’s history in 2015 and the first-two time All-American in 2016. Whittlesey also coached Lokedi to the first Big 12 individual cross country women’s title in Kansas history in the 2016 season.

The 2010 cross country season featured junior Donny Wasinger advancing as an individual to the national championship meet. Both Kansas cross country teams finished seventh at the 2010 Big 12 Cross Country Championships. Whittlesey came to KU after serving 11 years as the assistant coach in charge of cross country and distance running for the track program at North Carolina. In addition to his coaching duties, Whittlesey worked as the assistant director for both men’s and women’s track & field and cross country for his last four seasons at UNC.

He graduated from UConn in May 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in sports medicine/athletic training and later earned a master’s in biophysical science/exercise physiology in 1993. In 1997, Whittlesey received a doctorate of philosophy in sports science/exercise physiology from UConn.

In 2010 the Kansas women’s distance medley relay team composed of Lauren Bonds, Rebeka Stowe, Cori Christensen and Taylor Washington earned All-America status at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Under his direction, North Carolina middle distance/distance produced nine NCAA champions in six years, 70 All-Americans and 36 conference champions. Whittlesey led the track team to back-to-back NCAA titles in the distance medley relay at the 2006 and 2007 Indoor NCAA Championships. Along with the 2007 distance medley relay title, Whittlesey coached sophomore anchor Brie Felnagle to the individual NCAA title in the outdoor 1,500 meters. Under the guidance of Whittlesey, Felnagle captured three NCAA titles and was named an All-American 10 times in her career.

Whittlesey also coached standout runner Alice Schmidt, who was a two-time national champion in the outdoor 800 and the first North Carolina track & field athlete to win an NCAA title in the same event twice. Both Schmidt and Flanagan went on to earn places on the 2005 U.S. Track & Field World Championship team, while Donohue earned All-America status in both cross country and track.

In the 2016 indoor season, the Kansas women’s distance medley relay team earned All-America honors with a seventh place finish at the NCAA Championships.

Whittlesey mentored Bonds to an outstanding 2010 senior season as she claimed the Big 12 Outdoor title in the 1,500 meters and went on to earn All-America honors by taking seventh at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. En route to earning All-America status, Bonds set a new KU record in the event with her time of 4:14.29. Bonds also had a fine year off the track as she was named an Academic AllAmerican and was a finalist for NCAA Woman of the Year.

Perhaps no other athlete thrived under Whittlesey more than Shalane Flanagan. Flanagan was the NCAA cross country champion in 2002 and 2003. Not only was Flanagan the first Carolina woman to ever take the cross country national championship, but she was only the third woman in NCAA history to successfully defend her title. A three-time recipient of the NCAA Cross Country Athlete of the Year award, Flanagan also excelled on the track. She won a pair of indoor national championships in 2003. Individually, she claimed the title in the 3,000 meters and then teamed up with Erin Donohue, Anissa Gainey and Alice Schmidt to take first-place honors in the distance medley relay. Flanagan also earned a spot on the 2004 U.S. Olympic 5,000 team before claiming a bronze medal in the 10,000 at the 2008 Olympic Games.

Redshirt freshman Bryce Richards led a pack of six KU men’s runners in the top 10 during the 6K as Kansas topped UMKC, Oral Roberts and Kansas Wesleyan. Richards’ first official race as a Jayhawk after utilizing a redshirt season last year was a successful one, crossing in a time of 19:31.59 and placing second overall behind former KU runner Jacob Morgan, who ran unattached.

TEAM FINISH: 1ST INDIV. FINISHERS (OUT OF 33) 2. Bryce Richards 3. Michael Melgares 4. Carson Vickroy 5. Avery Hale 9. Jacob Ryan 11. Adel Yoonis 13. Ryan Liston 17. Markeen Caine 19. Jack McDonald

The men’s pack started together and continued to stick together for the majority of the race before Richards pushed ahead in the final segment. Morgan, who has exhausted his eligibility, led wire-to-wire and broke away from the main pack of runners near the mile mark, while the rest of the Jayhawks remained clustered. Richards finished nine seconds before his teammate sophomore Michael Melgares, who was third overall with a time of 19:40.86. The next two to cross the finish line were also Jayhawks. Junior Carson Vickroy and freshman Avery Hale followed closely behind Melgares with times of 19:42.05 and 19:43.49, respectively. “That (packing) was the plan going into it,” Richards said. “Coach (Whittlesey) wanted us to stay controlled and make sure to own our home course. This really shows how my summer training has paid off and I’m really excited for the rest of the year.” Rounding out the men’s scorers were senior Jacob Ryan (19:59.7) placing ninth, junior Adel Yoonis (20:08.6) claiming 11th, sophomore Ryan Liston (20:11.4) in 13th, senior Markeen Caine (20:42.2) at 17th and junior Jack McDonald, who ran his 6K in 20:56.7 for a 19th-place finish.

RIM ROCK FARM | OCT. 1, 2016 | LAWRENCE, KAN.

The Kansas men’s cross country team placed second, as Indiana swept the team titles at the Rim Rock Classic. Junior Chris Melgares placed sixth overall to lead the KU men in the 8K race. It was a solid season-debut for Melgares, as he kept his spot in the lead pack from start to finish and completed the 8K with a time of 24:19.0. He was trailed by sophomore Dylan Hodgson in ninth (24:33.5), senior Daniel Koech in 11th (24:37.0), sophomore Michael Melgares in 12th (24:39.3) and senior James Hampton in 13th (24:42.3), who kept a tight pack for most of the race. “Chris did a really good job leading the team,” Redwine said. “The other guys have to continue to work their way up to him, and as we go later into the season we’ve got to run better together.”

TEAM FINISH: 2ND INDIV. FINISHERS (OUT OF 88) 6. Chris Melgares 9. Dylan Hodgson 11. Daniel Koech 12. Michael Melgares 13. James Hampton 18. Ben Burchstead 19. Jacob Ryan 23. Avery Hale 25. Carson Vickroy 27. Bryce Richards 33. Adel Yoonis 34. Jack McDonald 50. Ryan Liston 54. Markeen Caine

The Jayhawks placed just behind the No. 14 Indiana, and running with the Hoosiers was the goal from the start. “Our plan was to go out as a pack and run off of Indiana and we did a really good job of executing that at first,” Chris Melgares said. “Through 4K or 5K we were right with them, but then a break was made and we couldn’t quite answer. In the end it was a close pack for us, but we needed to move it up a little bit more as a team and we would’ve seen a little bit better result.” After the four-mile mark, KU and Indiana’s top five runners were in a close battle, but going into the last part of the race, Indiana pulled ahead. Rounding out the men’s top-25 finishers were junior Ben Burchstead (25:06.8) placing 18th, senior Jacob Ryan (25:14.6) claiming 19th, freshman Avery Hale (25:30.7) finishing 23rd and junior Carson Vickroy (25:25.9) placing 25th.

2016 REVIEW

The men’s race got off to a slow start. The 8K was tightly contested, as only 10 seconds separated the top 50 runners halfway through the race. With 3,000 meters to go, it was Hampton leading the way for the Kansas men. He was the first Jayhawk to cross the finish line, clocking a time of 26:01.5.

TEAM FINISH: 4TH

“The goal of the meet was to have a total team effort,” Redwine said. “As excited as I am for James, I’m also really excited for the team because they did what was asked of them. They went out and did exactly what they were supposed to do. I’m really satisfied with their performance.” The other four KU scorers included junior Chris Melgares (26:04.4) in 17th, sophomore Michael Melgares (26:06.6) finishing 19th, sophomore Dylan Hodgson (26:13.6) placing 22nd and senior Daniel Koech (26:33.6), who came in 32nd overall. The Jayhawk women ran in a tight group near the front of the field for most of the 5K race at the Bob Timmons Dual Classic. They competed as a team, but once it became clear that KU had a comfortable lead, it was anyone’s race within the pack. Juniors Hannah Dimmick and Grace Morgan spent the first third of the race in the lead position before senior Jennifer Angles took her turn setting the pace. Dimmick used her strength to power through the wooded hills and into a lead position before hanging on at the end to win.

She remained there for the rest of the race, crossing the finish line 14 seconds ahead of the next finisher. “When I started, I didn’t want to go out too hard,” Lokedi said. “I kept just kept listening to my body and kept it under control. The two separated themselves from the rest of the pack midway through the trek and ran neck-and-neck for the majority of the remaining three kilometers. Schweizer managed to save just enough for a strong closing kick down the final 400 meters, pulling in front of Lokedi for good and claiming the Regional victory. The Jayhawk sophomore crossed the finish six seconds later, posting a final time of 20:00.7 for the runner-up finish. Lokedi’s performance marked the best by a KU female at an NCAA Regional race since Melissa Swartz also tallied a second-place finish at the meet in 1994. Lokedi earned an automatic bid to her secondstraight NCAA Championship race to be held in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Senior Hannah Richardson also had a standout top-20 performance, placing 19th with a time of 21:22.0.

Seniors Hannah Richardson and Malika Baker also saw strong performances, both placing in the top-20. Richardson matched her career-best regional finish with her 11th-place finish. The Kirkwood, Missouri product completed the 6K loop in 20:30.2. Malika Baker came in the best finish of her career at the Midwest Championships, coming across in 19th with her time of 20:44.2.

Rounding out the Jayhawk scorers were junior Lydia Saggau (21:41.4) in 31st, senior Malika Baker (21:49.9) finishing 33rd and senior Jennifer Angles (22:17.9) who placed 46thoverall.

The finish earned Lokedi, Richardson and Baker All-Region honors, the first time in the Stanley Redwine era (since 2000), three Kansas women have claimed All-Region accolades.

The women accumulated a total score of 129 points, earning them a sixth-place team finish.

Rounding out the top-five for the women scorers were junior Lydia Saggau (21:16.4) in 48th and junior Hannah Dimmick (21:40.5) in 76th. The women collected 154 points, earning them fifth-place out of 33 teams.

LAVERN GIBSON PARK | NOV. 19, 2016 | TERRE HAUTE, IND.

Sophomore Sharon Lokedi turned in the best performance by a KU runner at the NCAA Championships in over 50 years as the Jayhawk finished fifth at the NCAA Cross Country TIME Championships Saturday at the LaVern Gibson INDIV. FINISHERS (OUT OF 250) 19:52.2 Championship Course. Lokedi’s performance 5. Sharon Lokedi earned her All-America honors for the secondstraight season and made her the first two-time All-American in the history of the Kansas women’s program.

KXC M

On a cold and blustery morning in western Indiana, Lokedi went toe-to-toe with a collection of the nation’s best distance runners. Coming off a 10th-place finish in the event last year, an All-American campaign on the track in the winter and spring and a Big 12 cross country title last month, Lokedi was no stranger to the big stage and her experience showed in the race Saturday.

W

“When it’s cold and windy like it was today, you never know what might happen in a race like this,” said Lokedi following the race. “So my plan was to just stay up at the front, stay with the leaders and be ready for anything. I just wanted to hang in there as long as possible and I think I did that. It was a good race.”

C/S

Lokedi nabbed a fifth place finish, the best ever by a Kansas female at the NCAA race, topping her 10th-place finish from a year ago. Her race also marked the best outing by a Jayhawk – male or female – since John Lawson won the individual title in 1965.

SHARON LOKEDI

H/R

The pace quickened and the front runners began to spread out during the home stretch of the race, but Lokedi did well to keep pace and fought through the harsh head wind over the waning moments of the race. The sophomore sprinted down the closing chute and held off several strong kicks from other runners to cross the finish with a final time of 19:52.2, just over 10 seconds behind the winner.

R

As she had done in each of her races over her first two years as a Jayhawk, Lokedi ran with the lead pack from the starting gun. The Eldoret, Kenya native was never more than two strides back from the front runner during the first 4,000 meters of the 6K loop. At the 2K check point, she sat seventh and remained up at the front when she passed the 4K marker, sitting in third place overall.

CROSS COUNTRY EARNS ALL-ACADEMIC HONORS The University of Kansas men’s and women’s cross country teams earned All-Academic Team honors for the 2016 season, it was announced by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). KU seniors Malika Baker and Hannah Richardson also claimed Individual All-Academic honors. It marked the first selection for the Jayhawk duo. To be eligible for the award, a team must have a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA and must have had at least five runners compete at the NCAA regional championship meet in November. KU was one of seven teams in the Big 12 Conference to see both its men’s and women’s teams earn the distinction. The Jayhawk women amassed a GPA of 3.55, while the women ended the fall semester with a 3.03 cumulative GPA. The women’s squad garnered the honor for the eighth-straight season, while the KU men earned the distinction for the seventhconsecutive year. Baker and Richardson not only excelled on the cross country trails, but in the classroom as well during their final seasons with the Jayhawks. The Kansas duo was among KU’s top-four finishers in four meets on the year, with both earning All-Region honors. Richardson posted a careerbest 11th-place finish at the Midwest Regional in Iowa City, Iowa and was followed closely by Baker who finished 19th, also the highest finish of her career at the Regional Championships. In order to qualify for the individual honor, athletes must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 and finish in the top-25 (or 10 percent) at regionals or as an All-American at the national meet.

CROSS COUNTRY

KANSAS LEGENDS BENSON CHESANG (2003-06) When ranking Kansas runners in the modern era, Benson Chesang is an easy selection for the top of the list. The Kenya native won the Big 12 Championships two straight years, the first KU runner to do so since 1954-55, when John Lawson won back-to-back conference titles. Chesang was just the fifth man in school history to run in three NCAA Championship meets and recorded the highest KU finish in the 2004 meet (seventh) since Brent Steiner took seventh in 1984. His finish at the NCAA meet in 2004 earned him All-America honors, the first KU male to do so in 20 years. During his four years in Lawrence, Chesang was a three-time all-conference and all-region selection and was the team’s top runner all but one year of his Kansas career. In 2005 he helped the men’s team to a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, the Jayhawks’ best result at nationals since 1989.

GLENN CUNNINGHAM (1931-33) One of the earliest cross country greats to don the Crimson and Blue was Glenn Cunningham. A member of the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame, Cunningham was a two-time Big Six Conference cross country champion, capturing the league crown in 1931 and 1932. Cunningham also excelled in track & field while at Kansas, breaking the world record in the indoor 1,500 meters (3:53.3) in 1934 and both the indoor mile (4:08.4) in 1932 and the outdoor mile (4:06.7) in 1933. During his tenure on the track at KU, he served as team captain in 1934 and won 12 conference championships: four indoor (1932-34, mile run and 1934, 880-yard run) and eight outdoor (1932-34, mile run; 1932-34, 880-yard run; 1933-34, two-mile run). In 1932 and 1933, Cunningham was the NCAA champion in the mile run, earning All-America accolades in the process. A two-time Olympian in the 1,500 meters (1932 and 1936), Cunningham won the silver medal at the 1936 summer games in Berlin. In 1974, he became one of the first inductees into the National Track & Field Hall of Fame.

BILL EASTON (1948-65) In a career that spanned three decades, Bill Easton built a reputation as one of the nation’s best track and field coaches. Before coming to Kansas in 1948, Easton won three-straight cross country NCAA Championships with Drake University. His cross country teams won 15 conference championships and never finished worse than second in his 18 years as coach. He won conference titles in cross country, indoor and outdoor track for eight consecutive years. The first highlight of Easton’s Jayhawk career came in 1953 when his cross country team won the NCAA Championship. He later won the 1959 and 1960 outdoor men’s track & field titles. Easton coached 32 All-Americans including Wes Santee, Herb Semper, Al Frame, Billy Mills and John Lawson. In track & field, he mentored Olympic champions Bill Nieder and Al Oerter. His KU athletes set 14 intercollegiate records, seven NCAA records, 14 American records, four Olympic records and four world records. He is a member of seven different halls of fame, including the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame and the USA Track & Field Hall of Fame.

AL FRAME (1952-55) Al Frame carved out an impressive cross country and track & field career while attending the University of Kansas. A member of the 1953 NCAA championship team, Frame won the individual NCAA championship in 1954. Under the tutelage of head coach Bill Easton, Frame was a member of three Big Seven Conference championship teams while at KU. He also won two Big Seven individual championships, netting the accomplishment in back-to-back years (1954 and 1955) and was the last Jayhawk to do so until Benson Chesang won the Big 12 Championship in consecutive years (2004 and 2005). A 1954 and 1955 All-America honoree, Frame, like so many before him, also found success on the track and field team. During his time on the team, Frame captured six Big Seven Conference championships: four indoor (1954, two-mile run; 1955-56, mile run; 1956, 880-yard run) and two outdoor (1955, mile run; 1955, two-mile run). A third-place finish at the outdoor NCAA Championships in 1955 added All-America status to Frame’s resumé.

73

JOHN LAWSON (1963-66) As the most recent Kansas cross country runner to win the NCAA championship, John Lawson’s career signals yet another chapter in the golden era of Kansas cross country. In 1965, Lawson pulled off an impressive sweep, capturing both the Big Eight Conference championship and the NCAA individual title and was recognized with All-America status. A member of the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame, Lawson also performed valiantly on the Kansas track & field team, earning three All-America awards: one indoor for his second-place performance in the two-mile run and two outdoor for consecutive second-place finishes in the three-mile run in 1965 and 1966. At the conference level, Lawson captured four individual championships: three indoor (1964 and 1966, two-mile run; 1966, mile run) and one outdoor (1965, three-mile run).

Gold medalist. All-American. Hall-of-Famer. Kansas Jayhawk. All these accolades describe Billy Mills, who made his impact on the Kansas tradition with golden footprints. A two-time All-American (1958 and 1959), Mills captured the 1960 Big Eight cross country championship. He was also a part of two Big Eight Conference team titles while at KU (1958 and 1959) under head coach Bill Easton. However, Mills’ legacy at KU extends far beyond the borders of the Sunflower State. A member of the 1964 United States Olympic team, Mills won the gold medal in the 10,000 meters and set a new Olympic record. In dramatic fashion, Mills came from behind on the last lap to win the race in Tokyo and to this day, he is still the only American to win the event. Mills’ success was also evident on the track & field team, as he set a world record in the six-mile run in 1965 (27:11.6). He won two Big Eight Conference Individual Championships, capturing both the indoor and outdoor championships in 1961, and was a member of both the 1959 and 1960 NCAA championship track teams.

HISTORY/RECORDS

BILLY MILLS (1958-61)

Inducted into the National Track & Field Hall of Fame in 1976, Mills’ iconic statue, in which his arms are raised high, is placed on the last straightaway of Rim Rock Farm, saluting the runners for their perseverance and will to compete. In fact, the pose of Mills’ silhouette is identical to the one he struck upon winning the gold medal at the 1964 Olympics.

JIM RYUN (1966-69) There is perhaps no other athlete more associated with Kansas distance running than Jim Ryun. His legend extends far beyond his KU accomplishments. A three-time Olympian (1964, 1968 and 1972), Ryun captured silver at the 1968 games in Mexico City in the 1,500 meters, duplicating the performance of former Jayhawk Glenn Cunningham at the 1936 games. During his tenure at KU from 1966-69, Ryun broke five world records, including the world outdoor mile record twice, and also claimed five individual NCAA titles. Before attending Kansas, Ryun became the first high school runner to complete the mile run in under four minutes. In addition, his national high school mile record of 3:55.3 stood for nearly 30 years. KXC

Inducted into the National Track & Field Hall of Fame in 1982, Ryun’s statue at Rim Rock Farm sits atop the Jim Ryun Skyline Bend and is among the first statues visitors see when turning into Rim Rock Farm.

Santee was a member of the 1952 U.S. Olympic team in the 5,000 meters. He broke three world records while at Kansas, twice setting new marks in the indoor mile run (1954, 4:04.9; 1955, 4:03.8) and in the outdoor 1,500 meters (1954, 3:42.8). A two-time outdoor All-American, Santee won the 5,000 meters in 1952 and the mile run in 1953. Santee collected eight conference championships: four indoor (1952-54, mile run; 1953, 880 yards) and four outdoor (1952-54, mile run; 1953, 880 yards).

C/S

A Kansas Jayhawk, Wes Santee’s contributions to Kansas cross country and track & field are among the bedrocks of the tradition-rich heritage. Santee, an Ashland, Kansas, native, captured the NCAA championship in 1953, giving KU the individual crown for the third time in four years. In fact, Santee’s All-America performance at the 1953 NCAA Championships propelled the Kansas cross country team to the NCAA title, the only cross country team in KU’s history to achieve the feat. Santee also excelled at the conference level, claiming back-to-back league championships in 1952 and 1953 and helping his team collect two Big Seven Conference championships (1952 and 1953).

CROSS COUNTRY

KANSAS LEGENDS JULIA SAUL (1991-93) Arguably the greatest female runner Kansas cross country has ever seen, Julia Saul was the catalyst that began the rise of the women’s program. After the Lawrence native transferred to KU from Oregon following the 1990 season, she put together a list of accolades that few other women in the Crimson and Blue have been able to match. She was the first Kansas women’s AllAmerican, earning the honor with her 18th-place finish at the 1992 NCAA Championships. Her All-America accolade was the only in KU women’s history for 23 years until Sharon Lokedi earned the honor in 2015. A three-time All-Big Eight and All-District V selection, she collected a total of six individual titles throughout her career, including the 1991 District V title. Saul became just the fifth Jayhawk in the history of both the men’s and women’s programs to run in three NCAA Championship meets, finishing 32nd, 16th and 65th in the three races. Saul’s track career was just as decorated as her time with cross country. She was a two-time Big Eight Champion, claiming her first title in the 5,000 meters at the 1992 Indoor Championships, and her second coming later that year in the 10,000 meters at the 1992 Outdoor Championships. She held the school record in the outdoor 5,000 meters for 20 years and, until 2010, also held the indoor 5,000 meter school record.

HERB SEMPER (1952-55) A member of the Kansas cross country program during its golden era under the direction of head coach Bill Easton, Herb Semper firmly established his mark in the lore of Kansas cross country. Semper became the first Jayhawk to win an NCAA championship, prevailing in 1950 and then again in 1951. He remains the only runner in KU history to win two cross country individual national championships. Under Easton’s guidance, Semper was a member of two Big Seven Conference championship teams (1950 and 1951) and was a two-time Big Seven individual champion (1950 and 1951). Semper is also a member of the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame. Semper’s excellence extended to the Kansas track & field team as well. A four-time Big Seven Conference champion in the two-mile run (1950-52 indoor; 1950 outdoor), Semper was a two-time outdoor All-American after back-to-back third-place finishes in the two-mile run at the NCAA Championships. Semper’s statue at Rim Rock Farm is surrounded by three ponds (Teardrop Pond, Jayhawk Pond and Pat’s Little Pond) on the northeast portion of the course.

BOB TIMMONS (1968-88) Bob Timmons is to Kansas cross country what Phog Allen is to Kansas basketball. The man who coached KU to four NCAA Track & Field Championships is perhaps most noted for bringing Jim Ryun to Lawrence. Timmons coached Ryun at Wichita East High School until 1964, when he became an assistant at KU for a year under Bill Easton. Ryun then followed Timmons to Kansas where he continued to thrive under Timmons’ coaching. Timmons was an 11-time NCAA District V Coach of the Year and was the 1975 U.S. Track & Field Coaches Association National Coach of the Year. At the helm of the KU track & field program, he led the Jayhawks to 13 indoor league crowns and 14 outdoor titles. In cross country, Timmons guided John Lawson to the 1965 NCAA Individual Championship. In 1970, Timmons and his wife, Pat, purchased land just north of Lawrence. In 1974 that property became known as Rim Rock Farm, and it has been home of the Jayhawk cross country teams ever since. Rim Rock Farm is known as one of the best and toughest cross country courses in the nation and is a credit to Timmons’ vision and passion for the sport. The annual Bob Timmons Classic is held each September in the legendary coach’s honor on the course he put so much work into. During his career, Timmons coached 77 All-Americans, 24 NCAA champions, 16 world record holders and seven Olympians. Timmons is a member of the Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of Fame, the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame and the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.

COMPLIANCE 101 UNDERSTANDING THE “RULES OF THE GAME” With the continued success of Kansas Athletics, the Athletic Compliance Office wants you to understand how you can help KU coaches and student-athletes. Institutional control of athletics is a fundamental requirement of NCAA legislation. Specifically, the NCAA constitution provides that each institution shall be responsible for: • Controlling its intercollegiate athletics program in compliance with the rules and regulations of the NCAA. • Monitoring its program to ensure compliance with identifying and reporting to the NCAA instances in which compliance has not been achieved and taking appropriate corrective action. • Ensuring that members of the institution’s staff, student-athletes and other individuals or groups representing the institution’s athletics interests comply with all applicable NCAA rules. Under NCAA rules, KU is responsible for all actions of its boosters. Therefore, it is also our responsibility to make you aware of consequences for violating the rules pertaining to permissible booster activity. Boosters found in violation are subject to losing benefits and privileges, including season tickets. In addition, the NCAA Committee on Infractions has required institutions to disassociate boosters who have violated NCAA rules and regulations from the institution. COMPLIANCE TERMINOLOGY BOOSTERS. You are a representative of KU’s athletics interests, more commonly known as a “booster,” if you meet any of the following conditions: • You are a member of any organization that promotes KU’s athletics program (e.g., Williams Education Fund); • You have made a financial contribution to the KU athletics department or its booster organization; • You have assisted in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes for KU; • You have provided benefits (e.g., summer jobs or occasional family meals) to enrolled studentathletes; • You are the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of an enrolled student-athlete; or • You have, in any way, promoted the athletics program at KU. Remember: Once an individual has been identified as a booster, he or she retains this identity indefinitely. Even if you are not a booster as defined by the NCAA, know that your actions involving student-athletes can cause violations of NCAA rules. Something as simple as buying a student-athlete lunch at a fast food restaurant is, most likely, a NCAA violation. Please contact the Athletic Compliance Office with your questions regarding impermissible recruiting inducements and extra benefits. PROSPECTS. A prospective student-athlete, commonly known as a “prospect” or “recruit,” is any individual who has started classes for the ninth grade. In addition, a student who has not started classes for the ninth grade becomes a prospect if the institution contacts the student for recruiting purposes or provides the student (or the

student’s relatives or friends) any financial assistance or other benefits that the institution does not generally provide to all prospective students. In addition, studentathletes enrolled in preparatory schools or two-year colleges are considered prospective student-athletes. Remember: A prospect remains a prospect even after he or she signs a National Letter of Intent or Financial Aid Agreement to attend KU. The prospect does not lose this status until the start of classes at the university or until the beginning of official practice prior to the start of classes, whichever occurs first. After classes or official practice begins, the prospective student-athlete then simply becomes a student-athlete. CONTACT. A “contact” is a face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect’s parent, relative or legal guardian and institutional staff member or athletics representative during which dialogue occurs in excess of an exchange of a greeting. However, any such face-toface encounter on the KU campus or during a KU event that is prearranged, or takes place on the grounds of the prospect’s educational institution or at the site of an organized competition or practice involving the prospect or the prospect’s high school, preparatory school, twoyear college or all-star team, shall be considered a contact, regardless of the content of the conversation that occurs. TELEPHONE/ELECTRONIC CORRESPONDENCE CONTACT. The restriction on contact extends to telephone and electronic correspondence. Any contact by you or any other booster, alumnus or other representative of athletics interest via these modes of comunication is prohibited. Electronic correspondence includes, but not limited to, text messaging or any application that functions as a text message (i.e. snapchat), email, any social media methods (i.e. Facebook, Twitter), chat rooms and instant message. Telephone contact is any electronically-transmitted voice exchange including, but not limited to, calls and video conferenceing such as as Skype and Facetime. RECRUITING. Any contact by you or any other booster, alumnus or other representative of Kansas Athletics’ interests for the purpose of recruitment, is strictly and clearly prohibited. It is not permissible for any member of Kansas Athletics’ staff, alumnus or booster to contact a student-athlete at another institution for the purpose of recruitment. A student-athlete who is attending another institution must receive written permission from their institution before they can have contact with the University of Kansas. If you know of a prospective student-athlete who may want to attend KU, we encourage you to call the appropriate coach. Contacting a KU coach is the only permissible recruiting activity in which boosters may participate. EMPLOYMENT. It is permissible for an athletics representative or alumnus/alumna to contact a prospect regarding summer employment prior to initial enrollment provided the prospect has signed a National Letter of Intent. However, no contact may be made without

approval from the Athletic Compliance Office. In addition, the employment arrangement for the prospect may not begin until the prospect has graduated from high school. If the prospect is attending a two-year institution, the employment may not begin prior to the time that the prospect has officially withdrawn from or has completed the requirements for graduation at the two-year college. EXTRA BENEFITS. It is not permissible to provide any type of assistance to a prospect — financial or otherwise. A representative of Kansas Athletics’ interests or a “booster” may not provide ANYTHING to a prospect, their friends or family, even if the prospect has a signed National Letter of Intent or a Financial Aid Agreement. STUDENT-ATHLETE. A student-athlete is any University of Kansas student who is a member of a varsity athletics team. EXTRA BENEFITS. An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or booster to provide a student-athlete or his/her relatives or friends with a benefit not expressly authorized by the NCAA legislation. It is a violation of the NCAA rules to provide an extra benefit to a student-athlete. OCCASIONAL MEAL. You may provide a student-athlete or a team with an occasional meal at your home. This meal can be catered and you may provide the studentathletes with transportation to attend the meal. All occasional meals must be pre-approved by the Athletic Compliance Office. Together, the University of Kansas and YOU will make this program a success. These reminders will help guide you and ensure that Kansas Athletics operates within the rules and regulations of the NCAA as we continue toward our ultimate goal of academic and athletics excellence. If in doubt, remember that in most cases any contact with or benefits given to a prospect or an enrolled studentathlete or their family or friends is strictly prohibited.

FOR SPECIFIC NCAA RULE INTERPRETATIONS, PLEASE CONTACT THE ATHLETIC COMPLIANCE OFFICE: Kansas Athletics Compliance Office 1651 Naismith Drive Lawrence, KS 66045 Phone (785) 864-4200 Fax (785) 864-5289 Email compliance@ku.edu
