THE K RING The K Ring symbolizes a uniquely shared experience between generations of varsity letter winners at the University of Kansas. As a Jayhawk you are expected to uphold tradition and retain the characteristics of a champion while continuing the create your own legacy.

5.

WAVING THE WHEAT Since the early days of KU sports, it has been a ritual of Jayhawk fans to “wave the wheat” following every Kansas scoring drive in football. The tradition also extends to Allen Fieldhouse where fans “wave the wheat” when an opponent fouls out and at the conclusion of every Jayhawk victory. The ritual consists of fans waving their arms in the air, an activity which, when done by a large crowd, resembles a breezy Kansas wheat field.

6.

THE ROCK CHALK CHANT The Rock Chalk Chant has been the battle cry of KU fans for more than 80 years. This strange, traditional chant, which is among the most famous of all college cheers, was started by E.H.S. Bailey, a professor of chemistry. On May 21, 1886, Bailey submitted the cheer to his club.

CAMPANILE HILL Campanile Hill forms the picturesque backdrop for Memorial Stadium. On a sunny fall Saturday, the “Hill” is transformed into a congregating place for watching Jayhawk football, sunning and barbequing. Potter Lake, just to the southwest of Memorial Stadium and at the bottom of Campanile Hill, adds to the beauty of the Kansas campus.

THE ALMA MATER In 1891, professor George Barlow Penny searched for a school song for the Glee and Mandolin Club to sing on its tour through Kansas to Denver and back. No one responded with an original song in answer to his appeals. Just before departure, he thought of the Cornell song “Far Above Cayuga’s Waters.” Hastily changing a few words, he gave it to the glee club men to sing on the trip. He did not expect the song to be used after their return, but “Crimson and the Blue” still goes on. The music is not Cornell’s but an old English folk tune, “Annie Lisle.”

“GIVE THE WORLD THE BEST YOU’VE GOT AND THE BEST WILL COME BACK TO YOU.”

THE NICKNAME: JAYHAWK The University of Kansas is the home of the Jayhawk, a mythical bird with a fascinating history. Its origin is rooted in the historic struggles of Kansas settlers. The term “Jayhawk” was probably coined about 1848. Accounts of its use appeared from Illinois to Texas. The name combines two birds - the blue jay, a noisy, quarrelsome thing known to rob other nests, and the sparrow hawk, a stealthy hunter.

Heading into his 16th season with the Jayhawks, head coach Clark Campbell has created a winning tradition and strong culture within the swimming and diving program. Following the conclusion of the 2016-17 season, the Jayhawks posted one of the best four-year stints in program history claiming three second-place finishes at the Big 12 Championship meet, including two-straight from 2016-17. At the 2017 conference championship, Kansas bested its previous program record scoring 683.50 points for its third second-place finish in four years, with the other two coming in 2016 and 2014, where Campbell was named the league’s Swimming Coach of the Year both times.

TEAMS’ AVERAGE GPA IN CAMPBELL ERA

NCAA COMPETITORS

KU’s dominance in the pool over the years has brought Campbell to a 190-103 dual meet record throughout his coaching career.

all eight semesters. In 2000, Campbell was named the Missouri Valley Conference Men’s and Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year.

Campbell’s laid-back and genuine demeanor helps build close relationships with each of his swimmers outside of the pool. Not only does he care about making his swimmers better in the pool, but also in the classroom. Campbell’s team has been named by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) as a national Academic AllAmerican Team, earning a team GPA of 3.0 or higher, all 30 semesters he has managed the program.

From 1995-98, Campbell served as the assistant men’s swimming coach at the University of Minnesota. During his time in Minneapolis, the Golden Gophers captured Big Ten Conference titles in 1996 and 1998 while earning top-15 finishes all three years at the NCAA Championships.

Attention to detail is what makes Campbell’s practices productive. Every set he organizes for the swimmers has scientific reasoning behind why it works and will ultimately lead to success. His team at KU has placed in the top-five at the Big 12 Championships all 15 seasons. At Kansas, Campbell has coached 18 swimmers to NCAA Championship appearances.

Re Rb Hi

During his four years at Evansville, his squads were named Academic All-America by the CSCAA

Campbell received a Bachelor’s degree from Kansas in 1993, and a Master’s in physical education/ coaching from West Virginia University in 1995. Campbell and his wife, Cassie, have three children: Canaan, Cierra and Claire, who will swim for her father at KU starting in the 2018-19 season.

Cs

COACHING BEFORE KANSAS Prior to his appointment at KU, Campbell coached at the University of Evansville for three years. There, he led several athletes to success at the national level and helped the program reach new heights. The Purple Aces established school records in all 19 men’s and women’s events while Campbell was at the helm of the program in 1998. Those top marks included 12 Missouri Valley Conference records.

PERSONAL Campbell competed as a professional triathlete for seven years before his coaching career began. After turning professional at the age of 19, he became one of the most consistent top-10 finishers on the pro circuit. During his career, Campbell was selfcoached. He was the 1986 National Long Course Champion and the 1990 runner-up at the United States Triathlon Series National Championship.

Mj

During the 2013-14 season Campbell coached Kansas’ first Big 12 Champion, Chelsie Miller, to victory in the 400-yard individual medley. In the same season, the decorated coach also led the Jayhawks to their first top-two finish in 18 years.

Campbell served as the head coach of the men’s and women’s programs at West Virginia Wesleyan from 1993-95 and directed the school into a top10 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics program in just two years. He was named the NAIA Swimming Coach of the Year in 1995.

Ks

As a result of that 2016 conference meet, Campbell was named Big 12 Coach of the Year for the second time in his tenure. The other came in 2014 when he led KU to its first-ever top-two finish at the Big 12 Championship. This time, Campbell was accompanied by All-American Chelsie Miller, who was honored as 2016 Big 12 Swimmer of the Year. Campbell coached Miller to three-consecutive NCAA Championship bids, including her top-eight finish in the 400-yard individual medley at the 2016 championship meet. Miller earned All-America honors in all three appearances, receiving First Team accolades for the first time in 2016 and becoming the first Jayhawk to finish in the top-eight at NCAAs since 1993.

22

In

In 2016, Kansas registered a then-program-best 650.5 points at the meet while finishing second. En route to that performance, Campbell saw 25 Jayhawks turn in top-eight performances and 20 Jayhawks make ‘B’ finals, all contributing to their final point total.

TIME SCORER FOR KU AT BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP

Her career at KU began in 2003 as she took the position of assistant coach and head recruiting coordinator under Campbell. She was a student assistant under former KU head swim coach Cathy Burgess during the 2000-01 season. In her first season, she assisted the Jayhawks to a 9-3 record and a third-place finish at the Big 12 Championships.

She is married to Tate Betz. The couple has one son, Charlie.

Mj Re

SWIMMING CAREER AT KU (1996-2000) Former head swimming coach and assistant athletic director Gary Kempf recruited Betz to swim for Kansas. Betz competed in the backstroke and the freestyle events and was a seven-time scorer at the Big 12 Championship during her four years as an athlete at KU from 1996-2000.

PERSONAL After graduation, the Mansfield, Ohio native joined the full-time staff of Athletes in Action (AIA), a Christian sports organization that helps studentathletes throughout the country. AIA sent her to the University of Virginia where she became a volunteer assistant under head coach Mark Bernardino and worked with the men’s and women’s swimming teams. Both teams finished top 10 in the NCAA.

Ks Rb Hi

Last season, Betz helped coach KU to a runner-up finish at the 2017 Big 12 Championship for the third time in four years. She also aided the team to a 5-4 dual meet record. That season sang the same tune as the 2016 season, as the Jayhawks improved to their then-highest point total at a conference meet in history. Betz continued to reign in the accolades as a nominee for the CollegeSwimming’s Assistant Coach of the Year Award. She was one of four finalists in the Established Assistant category.

A mentor for KU swimmers, Betz creates strong one-on-one relationships. Each year, she looks to challenge the swimmers and bring in high-level recruits to continue successful performances – the team boasts a 113-50 dual meet record in her tenure. PERSONAL While in high school, Downey was a four-time Kansas State Champion and broke the high school state record in diving. He continued his dominance in the pool in college, where he was a Big 12 Finalist as well as a NCAA Zone qualifier.

Once a collegiate competitor himself, Downey understands the rigorous schedule and demands of student-athletes. The former diver competed for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he perfected the art of diving. After returning to the Kansas City metro area, Downey began to offer his talents as a coach for local club teams. A few of his accomplishments include back-to-back top-25 team finishes at the USA Diving Junior Nationals, as well as producing divers who competed in the 2008 and 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials.

strong recruiting improvements as well. The team will now have five divers, and have their sights set on reaching finals on all three boards at the Big 12 Conference meet this year, as well as qualifying for Zone Championships.

After serving as the interim diving coach for Kansas during part of the 2014-15 season, Gabe Downey became a permanent addition to the coaching staff, now entering his third season. The Kansas City, Missouri native is familiar with KU’s swimming and diving program and has high expectations for the Jayhawks, both in and out of the pool. While Downey is looking forward to producing competitive divers for the Jayhawks, he is also focusing on creating a strong culture between the team.

In addition to serving as executive vice chancellor, Dr. Girod also served as interim executive dean of the KU School of Medicine until March 24, 2014. Prior to those roles, he served as senior associate dean for clinical affairs and chair of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

A surgeon, Dr. Girod joined the University of Kansas Medical Center faculty in 1994 and quickly rose through the academic ranks, becoming chair of the otolaryngology department in 2002. He was named Russell E. Bridwell Endowed Chair in 2008. Dr. Girod earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of California at Davis and his medical degree from the University of California at San Francisco. He completed his residency and an NIH research fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle. Prior to joining the University of Kansas Medical Center, Dr. Girod served as vice chairman and research director in the Department of Otolaryngology at the Naval Medical Center in Oakland, California. He served in the United States Navy Reserve from 1982, rising to the rank of lieutenant commander and later earning the Meritorious Service Medal.

COACHES/STAFF

Douglas A. Girod, M.D., became the 18th chancellor of the University of Kansas on July 1, 2017, after serving for four years as executive vice chancellor of the University of Kansas Medical Center. There he oversaw the educational, research, patient care and community engagement missions of the University of Kansas schools of Medicine, Nursing and Health Professions, with their total annual enrollment of more than 3,300 students; a workforce of more than 2,100 faculty and more than 4,000 staff; and research funding of nearly $100 million.

Director of Athletics Dr. Sheahon (SHAY-un) Zenger’s genuine care for coaches and student-athletes has hallmarked his career in intercollegiate athletics. That care, which he has exhibited since his arrival as Athletics Director in January 2011, has helped KU’s coaches and studentathletes achieve outstanding performances on both the conference and national stages. Highlights include:

• A National Championship for the Women’s Outdoor Track & Field team, and seven individual national championships. • NCAA Final Four and two Elite 8 appearances for Men’s Basketball and seven Big 12 Conference regular-season championships, raising that streak of titles to a record-tying 13. • NCAA Final Four and Sweet 16 (and five straight NCAA) appearances for Volleyball. • Two NCAA Sweet 16 appearances for Women’s Basketball. • NCAA Tournament appearances for Softball (twice), Soccer (twice), Men’s Golf (twice), Tennis (twice), Baseball and Women’s Golf. • Four National Coach-of-the-Year awards – Stanley Redwine, women’s track and field; Bill Self, men’s basketball; Ray Bechard, volleyball, and Laura Kuhn (assistant coach), volleyball – and several Big 12 Conference Coach-of-the-Year awards – Self (four times), Bechard (four times), Redwine (three times) and Clark Campbell, swimming (twice). In addition, tennis coach Todd Chapman was named 2016 Coach of the Year for the Central Region after leading the Jayhawks to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 17 years. During 2016-17, 10 KU teams were represented in NCAA postseason competition. Zenger has spearheaded some $90 million in new Kansas Athletics facilities as well – improvements he expects will help KU’s coaches and student-athletes continue their run of outstanding performances. Notable among these is the completion of

the DeBruce Center, the permanent home of James Naismith’s original “Rules of Basket Ball.” In addition, a $2 million renovation of the football locker room is now complete. The track surrounding the football field was removed in summer 2014, replaced with new artificial turf, bringing the turf to within 10 feet of the stands. A $1 million renovation of the Jayhawks’ Sports Medicine Facility has provided modernized rehabilitation, an x-ray room and treatment areas. Fall 2015 saw the opening of McCarthy Hall, which houses the men’s basketball team and an equal number of non-student-athletes. The beautiful new, nationally acclaimed Rock Chalk Park, home to KU soccer, softball, and track and field, has already hosted USA, NCAA and Big 12 Conference meets, and more are on the horizon. And the new Jayhawk Tennis Center, a 12-court indoor-outdoor complex at Rock Chalk Park, now houses the KU tennis team. Stressing a culture of competitiveness and citizenship, Zenger has instituted KU Leads, a student-athlete development program dedicated to fostering committed leaders and supporting career development. Zenger came to KU after serving for five years as athletics director at Illinois State University, helping steer ISU Athletics to a place of prominence in the Missouri Valley Conference. He earned two degrees from Kansas State before coming to KU to earn his Ph.D. in educational policy and leadership, strengthening his understanding of university leadership at the highest levels. Zenger is married to the former Pam McAnarney; they have three children: Luke and Abby, who are in college, and Jake, who’s in high school.

Compliance 101 UNDERSTANDING THE “RULES OF THE GAME” With the continued success of Kansas Athletics, the Athletic Compliance Office wants you to understand how you can help KU coaches and student-athletes. Institutional control of athletics is a fundamental requirement of NCAA legislation. Specifically, the NCAA constitution provides that each institution shall be responsible for: •

Controlling its intercollegiate athletics program in compliance with the rules and regulations of the NCAA. Monitoring its program to ensure compliance with identifying and reporting to the NCAA instances in which compliance has not been achieved and taking appropriate corrective action. Ensuring that members of the institution’s staff, student-athletes and other individuals or groups representing the institution’s athletics interests comply with all applicable NCAA rules.

Under NCAA rules, KU is responsible for all actions of its boosters. Therefore, it is also our responsibility to make you aware of consequences for violating the rules pertaining to permissible booster activity. Boosters found in violation are subject to losing benefits and privileges, including season tickets. In addition, the NCAA Committee on Infractions has required institutions to disassociate boosters who have violated NCAA rules and regulations from the institution. COMPLIANCE TERMINOLOGY BOOSTERS. You are a representative of KU’s athletics interests, more commonly known as a “booster,” if you meet any of the following conditions: •

• • •

• •

You are a member of any organization that promotes KU’s athletics program (e.g., Williams Education Fund); You have made a financial contribution to the KU athletics department or its booster organization; You have assisted in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes for KU; You have provided benefits (e.g., summer jobs or occasional family meals) to enrolled studentathletes; You are the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of an enrolled student-athlete; or You have, in any way, promoted the athletics program at KU.

Remember: Once an individual has been identified as a booster, he or she retains this identity indefinitely. Even if you are not a booster as defined by the NCAA, know that your actions involving student-athletes can cause violations of NCAA rules. Something as simple as buying a student-athlete lunch at a fast food restaurant is, most likely, a NCAA violation. Please contact the Athletic Compliance Office with your questions regarding impermissible recruiting inducements and extra benefits. PROSPECTS. A prospective student-athlete, commonly known as a “prospect” or “recruit,” is any individual who has started classes for the ninth grade. In addition, a student who has not started

classes for the ninth grade becomes a prospect if the institution contacts the student for recruiting purposes or provides the student (or the student’s relatives or friends) any financial assistance or other benefits that the institution does not generally provide to all prospective students. In addition, student-athletes enrolled in preparatory schools or two-year colleges are considered prospective student-athletes. Remember: A prospect remains a prospect even after he or she signs a National Letter of Intent or Financial Aid Agreement to attend KU. The prospect does not lose this status until the start of classes at the university or until the beginning of official practice prior to the start of classes, whichever occurs first. After classes or official practice begins, the prospective student-athlete then simply becomes a student-athlete. CONTACT. A “contact” is a face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect’s parent, relative or legal guardian and institutional staff member or athletics representative during which dialogue occurs in excess of an exchange of a greeting. However, any such face-to-face encounter on the KU campus or during a KU event that is prearranged, or takes place on the grounds of the prospect’s educational institution or at the site of an organized competition or practice involving the prospect or the prospect’s high school, preparatory school, two-year college or allstar team, shall be considered a contact, regardless of the content of the conversation that occurs. TELEPHONE/ELECTRONIC CORRESPONDENCE CONTACT. The restriction on contact extends to telephone and electronic correspondence. Any contact by you or any other booster, alumnus or other representative of athletics interest via these modes of comunication is prohibited. Electronic correspondence includes, but not limited to, text messaging or any application that functions as a text message (i.e. snapchat), email, any social media methods (i.e. Facebook, Twitter), chat rooms and instant message. Telephone contact is any electronically-transmitted voice exchange including, but not limited to, calls and video conferenceing such as as Skype and Facetime. RECRUITING. Any contact by you or any other booster, alumnus or other representative of Kansas Athletics’ interests for the purpose of recruitment, is strictly and clearly prohibited.

EMPLOYMENT. It is permissible for an athletics representative or alumnus/alumna to contact a prospect regarding summer employment prior to initial enrollment provided the prospect has signed a National Letter of Intent. However, no contact may be made without approval from the Athletic Compliance Office. In addition, the employment arrangement for the prospect may not begin until the prospect has graduated from high school. If the prospect is attending a two-year institution, the employment may not begin prior to the time that the prospect has officially withdrawn from or has completed the requirements for graduation at the two-year college. EXTRA BENEFITS. It is not permissible to provide any type of assistance to a prospect — financial or otherwise. A representative of Kansas Athletics’ interests or a “booster” may not provide ANYTHING to a prospect, their friends or family, even if the prospect has a signed National Letter of Intent or a Financial Aid Agreement. STUDENT-ATHLETE. A student-athlete is any University of Kansas student who is a member of a varsity athletics team. EXTRA BENEFITS. An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or booster to provide a student-athlete or his/her relatives or friends with a benefit not expressly authorized by the NCAA legislation. It is a violation of the NCAA rules to provide an extra benefit to a student-athlete. OCCASIONAL MEAL. You may provide a studentathlete or a team with an occasional meal at your home. This meal can be catered and you may provide the student-athletes with transportation to attend the meal. All occasional meals must be pre-approved by the Athletic Compliance Office. Together, the University of Kansas and YOU will make this program a success. These reminders will help guide you and ensure that Kansas Athletics operates within the rules and regulations of the NCAA as we continue toward our ultimate goal of academic and athletics excellence. If in doubt, remember that in most cases any contact with or benefits given to a prospect or an enrolled student-athlete or their family or friends is strictly prohibited.

It is not permissible for any member of Kansas Athletics’ staff, alumnus or booster to contact a student-athlete at another institution for the purpose of recruitment. A student-athlete who is attending another institution must receive written permission from their institution before they can have contact with the University of Kansas.

FOR SPECIFIC NCAA RULE INTERPRETATIONS, PLEASE CONTACT THE ATHLETIC COMPLIANCE OFFICE:

If you know of a prospective student-athlete who may want to attend KU, we encourage you to call the appropriate coach. Contacting a KU coach is the only permissible recruiting activity in which boosters may participate.
