Season Outlook

xpectations are high as the Jayhawks head into another season of Kansas cross country. The 2011 season will see the return of 12 letterwinners on the men’s side, while the women return nine from a 2010 campaign that saw both teams place 11th or better at the NCAA Regionals. Both teams will be filled with experience and depth from top to bottom, having all but one of their top five performers return from last season. “I’m really looking forward to see how the season turns out,” said 12th-year Head Coach Stanley Redwine. “On paper, we should be pretty good. Both teams have experience. Both teams have depth. My expectations are certainly that our kids will come in and have a successful season.” With a strong cast of returners making up the majority of both men’s and women’s squads, the 2011 roster will be filled with confidence and, more importantly, experience from top to bottom. Six women and six men who saw action in last year’s Big 12 Championships and NCAA Regionals will be back in the Crimson and Blue in 2011. The KU roster also features four seniors on each of the men’s and women’s squads as well as seven juniors, three for the men and four for the women. “With both men’s and women’s teams we have a pretty strong nucleus of returners coming back,” said third-year Assistant Coach Mike Whittlesey. “We only lost one from our top-five on both the men’s and the women’s teams last year, so we have a lot of experience coming back. The things we will really work on this season are trying to get the right combination and understanding how we need to compete in the big races.” Even though there is a plethora of leadership returning, for the season to be a real success it will be dependent on the underclassmen, who will add depth to the KU roster. The teams will feature a combined five sophomores and nine redshirt freshmen, many of whom saw action in several meets last season. Those young Jayhawks will be looked upon to make significant contributions throughout the year and will be imperative to the teams’ overall success as the season wears on. “One of the things Coach Whittlesey has done has been to develop great depth,” said Coach Redwine. “We have redshirted some people that will be able to come up and contribute for us this year. We also had a lot of our young runners get experience and contribute last year, which will really pay-off for us this season.” While there will be a great amount of experience on this year’s squad, as always, there will be several fresh faces. Eleven freshmen (six men, five women) and one transfer will be joining the Jayhawks for the 2011 campaign and will be expected to catch on quickly and contribute immediately. The 2011 Jayhawks will feature a quality that recent teams have lacked at times, senior leadership. Kansas returns two athletes that were All-Big 12 selections a year ago, Donny Wasinger and Rebeka Stowe, who are both primed for tremendous seasons. Both were KU’s top finishers in each race they competed in last season and both are looking to continue that streak this year, while also pushing their teammates to some top finishes as well. “The one common denominator on all of our past great teams is that we’ve had a great leader,” explained Coach Redwine. “This year we have that in Donny (Wasinger) on the men’s side and Rebeka (Stowe) on the women’s side. It starts at the top. If you have great leaders, then you have great depth, and once you’ve got those two things then you’re going to see some great results by the end of the season.” The 2011 Jayhawks are confident, deep, experienced and are coming off of one of the toughest summer workout regiments they have ever seen. This season, they will look to move the Kansas program that much closer to the upper echelon of collegiate cross country and to write another chapter in the KU cross country’s storied history. “Our goal is to be a perennial national championship contender, and I think this year we will take great strides toward that goal,” said Coach Whittlesey. “There’s a great heritage here at Kansas for cross country and I think our athletes have embraced that and have learned to value themselves and this program at a much higher level. Now that we have achieved that, the rest is going to become easier.” “The biggest change I’ve noticed in recent years is the athletes want to be great,” Coach Redwine concluded. “Their goal is to be at the top as a team. They’re coming in with the mindset, ‘Yes, we can do this’ and once you get those components together, that’s when the magic happens. That’s when it starts to get fun.”

The Schedule

he 2011 schedule is sure to test the Jayhawks from the first meet to the last, putting them up against some of the most competitive fields in the NCAA this season. “I feel like we’ve got a really strong schedule this year,” said assistant coach Mike Whittlesey. “It will be fun seeing our athletes going up against the best courses and the best athletes from around the country.” The 2011 season will once again kick-off with the Bob Timmons Classic on September 3 at the Jayhawks’ home course, Rim Rock Farm. At least one KU team has claimed the meet title the last five-consecutive seasons and has had at least one individual claim a title in the past seven meets. The meet will provide a prime opportunity for some of the young Jayhawks to prove themselves and build confidence for the remainder of the season.

“I really think the Wisconsin meet is going to be stronger than the NCAA Championships, competition-wise,” said Whittlesey. “Most of the top-40 teams in the country have decided to go to that meet this year. All the big players are going to be at that one. It’s going to be tough, but it’ll give us some great experience.”

The following week both teams will travel to Columbia, Mo., for a September 10 match-up against rival Missouri at the Missouri Cross Country Challenge. Both the men’s and women’s teams have good memories from last year’s meet. The men won the event while the women placed four runners in the top 10 to finish second.

From there, the Jayhawks will then prepare for the Big 12 Championships on October 29 in College Station, Texas. Both teams will look to improve upon their seventh-place finishes at the meet last season, and will look to have an individual champion crowned for the first time since 2007.

After a week break the Jayhawks will have to traverse through one of the toughest courses they will face all season when they compete at the Roy Griak Invitational on September 24 in Minneapolis, Minn.

The NCAA Regional Championships will take place on November 12 in Dekalb, Ill. The Jayhawks placed two individuals in the top 20 last season and hope to place even more in that select group this season, in order to send teams to the NCAA Championships.

The Jayhawks will then return to Lawrence and compete against their neighbors from Haskell in the Haskell Invitational on October 8. The meet will be another opportunity for the Jayhawks to gain confidence as they head in to the challenging part of the schedule.

“Our goal is to qualify for the NCAA meet as a team,” said head coach Stanley Redwine. “We have had individuals in the past but getting our team qualified has to be the goal we work toward throughout the season. That regional meet is always a very important one for us.”

On October 15 the teams will face arguably the toughest competition of the season at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational in Madison, Wis. Many of the country’s top teams have entered the meet hosted by Wisconsin this year instead of competing in the also-competitive Pre-Nationals Meet, making the event in Madison a star-filled race.

Indiana State will once again host the NCAA Championships at its home course, the LaVern Gibson Championship Course, on November 21. Senior Donny Wasinger already has solid experience on this course after competing there in the NCAA Championships last season. Wasinger will attempt to make it back to Terre Haute for a second-straight year and hopes to be joined by several of his teammates from both the men’s and women’s teams. “This schedule really has the potential to set us up to do some good things late in the season,” Coach Whittlesey explained. “Our goals are definitely for a top five, if not higher, team finish at the Big 12 meet. Then of course to earn a trip for both teams to the NCAA Championships. That should be our goal every single year, however, this is really the year that we have a great chance of accomplishing that.”

Meet the Staff

Stanley Redwine

Since taking the reins of the track and field and cross country teams at the University of Kansas, Stanley Redwine has found success in leaps and bounds. As he enters his 12th year at the helm, Redwine, his staff and his teams continue to establish their marks in the lore of Jayhawk history, shattering school records and adding several All-Americans to the illustrious luminaries of Kansas’ storied past. Judging by his results, both as a coach and as an athlete, this path looks to continue into the future. In Redwine’s first nine seasons, 33 Kansas student-athletes have achieved 69 All-America honors, and the men’s and women’s teams have combined to set more than 61 school records and cracked the KU all-time top-five list in more than 60 events. At Kansas, he has coached four individuals to national championHead Coach ships in six different events. As a result of their outstanding performances, Redwine’s 2001 and 2002 12th Year men’s track and field teams were enshrined into the KU Hall of Fame after back-to-back eighth-place finishes at the NCAA Championships. Coaching History 2000-Present Kansas Throughout Redwine’s tenure, his teams have also shown great success in the classroom. In the past four Head Coach, Cross Country/Track & Field seasons alone, the cross country teams have supplied 39 members to the Academic All-Big 12 teams, 1994-2000 Tulsa while the track teams have contributed 86 to the same list. Head Coach, Cross Country/Track & Field 1985-1994 Arkansas Before Redwine was hired as head coach at Kansas on May 25, 2000, he had a six-year stint as head coach Assistant Coach, Track at the University of Tulsa. At Tulsa, Redwine’s athletes broke more than 70 school records, most on multiple occasions. In many events, Redwine’s athletes completely re-wrote the Golden Hurricane’s all-time Athletic Achievements top-10 performance lists. Including some of the top finishes in conference history, Redwine produced 11 • Four-time All-American NCAA qualifiers and Tulsa’s first-ever All-American. Redwine also oversaw the Golden Hurricane as they • Six-time conference champion registered some of the highest conference finishes in school history. • Two-time U.S. 800m champion • Silver Medalist, 800-meter run (Goodwill Games, 1986 and 1994) Prior to his appointment at Tulsa in 1994, Redwine spent 11 years as an assistant coach at the University • Bronze Medalist, 800-meter run (Pan-Am of Arkansas, one of the premier track and field programs in the nation. During his tenure at UA, the RaGames, 1983 and 1987) zorbacks captured nine consecutive NCAA Championships and 22 titles from 1985 to 1994 in both track • Five-time World Championship team member and field and cross country. Bachelor’s in administrative management Professionally, Redwine retired from competition in 1996 after he finished fifth in the 800-meter run at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Atlanta, Ga. He was a U.S. Olympic Trial qualifier five consecutive times from 1980 to 1996 and was a two-time silver medalist in the 800-meter run at the Goodwill Games (1986, 1994). He also won two bronze medals at the Pan American Games, in 1983 and 1987. Redwine was a five-time World Championship team member (1985, 1987, 1989, 1991, 1993), and a two-time U.S. 800-meter champion. Redwine earned his bachelor’s degree in administrative management from the University of Arkansas in 1985. He and his wife, Jacqueline, have three children: Crysta (27), Stanley, Jr. (24), and Alexa (19).

Michael Whittlesey, Ph.D.

Michael Whittlesey is in his third season as assistant coach for cross country and middle distance/distance running for track at Kansas. In his short time at Kansas, Whittlesey has already made a huge impact with both the cross country and track programs. In his first two seasons with the Jayhawks, he has guided two Jayhawks to appearances at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, Lauren Bonds, which was a first for a KU woman since the 1994 season, and Donny Wasinger, who was the first KU man to do so since 2007. Additionally, in 2010 the Kansas women’s distance medley relay team composed of Bonds, Rebeka Stowe, Cori Christensen and Taylor Washington earned All-America status at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships. Whittlesey has mentored six Jayhawks to All-America honors on the track and has seen 10 of his athletes break school records. Whittlesey and his wife, Carol, have two children: seven-year-old daughter Samantha Paige and five-year-old son Ryan Allen.

Chris Howard

Associate Athletics Director Cross Country Administrator Fifth Year

Chris Howard is in his fifth year as an associate athletics director in the Kansas athletic department. His responsibilities include acting as the administror of both the cross country and track & field programs. Before assuming his current role he worked with the Williams Educational Fund to promote Kansas Athletics and develop opportunities for athletics alumni of KU. The St. Louis native has made stops at LSU as an associate athletics director from 2003-07, at the NCAA as a memberof the enforcement staff from 2001-03, and again at KU from 1996-98 as a supervisor for student support services. Howard earned a bachelor of science degree in education from the University of Kansas in 1997. He added a master’s in science degree in education and a jurist doctor degree from KU in 2001; he received the Justice Lloyd Kagey Leadership Award during his final year at the KU law school. He was also a combat medical specialist in the United States Army from 1990 to 1995; he served in Operation Desert Storm with the 24th Infantry Division. Howard has two children, Oliva, 8, and Langston, 5.

Vince Bingham

Vince Bingham was named director of operations for the Kansas track & field and cross country programs in 2008 and brings over 26 years of coaching experience to the KU staff. As a coach at Lindenwood and Missouri Babtist, Bingham’s teams won three NAIA National Championships. In 2006 with Missouri Baptist, Bingham’s women’s team broke eight national records at the NAIA Indoor Championships and all told, Bingham’s athletes earned 78 All-America honors that season. Director of Cross Country/ Track & Field Operations Fourth Year

Bingham’s athletes have qualified for the NCAA Division I Championships five times and he has coached six NCAA Division II All-Americans, with Sedell Roberts grabbing the honor in the indoor 400 meters and Jody Kay Martines taking the award in the outdoor 100 meters and 400-meter relay.

Debbie Luman

Debbie Luman started at Kansas Athletics in February, 1996 and serves as the administrative assistant for the cross country and track and field teams. Her main responsibility is working with coaches on day-to-day operations of the track office, while organizing officials and volunteers for home cross country and track meets. Luman worked as the department’s travel auditor for seven years before joining the track office in 2003. Before coming to KU, Luman spent three years as a teller supervisor and construction loan processor at Commerce Bank and one year as the human resources manager at Curtis 1000. She was born in Hutchinson, Kan., where she attended Hutchinson High School. She graduated with a business degree from Baker University.

Luman and her husband David have four children, Lindsey, Chris, Jessica and Katie. She enjoys traveling and scrapbooking.

Milan Donley

On Nov. 1, 2006, Milan Donley was named the events coordinator as well as meet director for the Kansas Relays. Donley was the horizontal jumps coach for the Jayhawks for seven seasons. For his oustanding coaching efforts in 2005, the U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association named Donley the Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year. Prior to coming to KU, Donley guided 17 All-Americans, two national champions, four Olympic team members, two U.S. champions and two American record holders.

Events Coordinator Ninth Year Donley and his wife, Julie, reside in Lawrence with their three children, Hailey, Ethan and Anna.

Tegan Thornberry

Tegan Thornberry started at Kansas Athletics in August, 2003 and serves as the travel manager. Her main responsibilities are overseeing all travel operations and making sure each team’s trips run smoothly. She specializes in postseason travel and local hotel liaison. Thornberry was a member of the Kansas golf team and also worked as a men’s basketball manager while in school. She also spent time as a baseball operations intern for the Kansas City Royals. Thornberry earned her bachelor’s degree in sports and fitness management and her master’s in sport studies at KU.

Travel Manager Eighth Year

She was born in Seoul, South Korea and attended Saint Thomas Aquinas High School in Overland Park, Kan. While in high school she played softball and golf. Thornberry is a member of the Society of Collegiate Travel Management. Her main hobby is golf.

Phil Lowcock, Ph.D.

Dr. Phil Lowcock is entering his 18th year with Kansas Athletics. He serves as the academic advisor for baseball, tennis and women’s cross country/ track & field. For the past 10 years he has been on a hiatus from working with the cross country/track and is looking forward to retunring to the programs again this season. He also works to support all of KU’s international student-athletes with admissions, immigration and visa acquisition and transition to college courses. In addition, he is an adjunct faculty member in the health, sport and excersice science department and lectures a class on campus every semester. Lowcock has been teaching at KU since 1984, when he began working as a graduate teaching assistant and doctoral student in the health, sport and exercise science department. He has attained three degrees, all from Kansas; bachelor’s and master’s in education in 1985 and 1989 and a doctorate in applied sport psychology and counseling psychology in 1992. Academic Counselor The Kansas City, Kan., native is a graduate of Shawnee Missoin North and has a daughter, Megan, who is currently a sophomore in high school. In 18th Year his spare time he enjoys spending time with his daughter and their two dogs as well as rooting on the Jayhawks athletes whenever possible.

Lisa Hehman

Lisa Hehman started at Kansas Athletics in August, 2009 and serves as an academic and career counselor. Her main responsibilities are to assist student-athletes with course selection, degree choice and academic challenges. Hehman came to KU after working as the men’s basketball advisor and life skills specialist at Cleveland State from 2007-09. She also worked as a graduate assistant for student supports services at UMKC and as a high school English teacher at the Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts. She earned her bachelor’s degree in communications studies from Kansas and her master’s degree in counseling and guidance from UMKC. Academic Counselor Hehman was born in Detroit, Mich., and attended Blue Springs South (Mo.) High School, where she participated in swimming. Third Year

Katie Martincich

Katie Martincich is in her first year with Academic Support. She will be assisting the cross country/track & field academic counselors with administrative and counseling responsibilities. Before she came to KU she worked at the Cerner Corporation in Kansas City. There, she worked as a programs coordinator as well as a business analyst. In 2009, Martincich earned bachelors’ degrees in both business marketing and sports and fitness management from KU. She is currently working towards a master’s in education while she works as a graduate student in the academic support offices. Martinchich was a four year letterwinner for the KU volleyball team from 2006-09 and was the recipient of the 2008 Big 12 Sportsman of the Year award, as well as the 2009 KU Women of Distinction Award. She also was named to the Academic All-Big 12 lists on numerous occasions. Originally from Shawnee, Kan., Martincich grew up with two older sisters Lisa (30) and Laura (28). In her spare time she coaches a club volleyball team in Kansas City. She enjoys hanging out with friends and family and loves listening to live music.

Maggie Mountsier Maggie Mountsier is in her second year as an athletic trainer for the men’s and women’s cross country/track & field teams. Her main responsibilities include prevention of injuries, evaluation and assessment of injuries, taping/bracing and rehabilitation/reconditioning. Mountsier is currently completing her master’s in health education from KU and is anticipating to graduate in May of 2012. She earned a bachelor’s degree of science in kinesiology and health from Iowa State University in the spring of 2010. While at Iowa State, she worked as an athletic training student for two years. Mountsier originally hails from Urbandale, Iowa and attended Urbandale High School where she was a member fo the swimming and golf teams. She has two older brothers Cliff (26) and Andrew (23) and enjoys spending time with friends and family in her spare time, as well as playing golf and watching movies.

Zack Sanchez

This is Zack Sanchez’s first year working with the KU training staff. His duties include covering the athletic training duties for both the cross country and track & field teams as well as being the department’s orthotics specialist and the visiting team information correspondent. Sanchez brings several years of experience as a trainer with other top cross country and track and field programs from around the country to KU. Before arriving in Lawrence, he worked at school’s such as Kentucky, Colorado and Florida. He earned his athletic training certification at the University of Florida in 2008. Sanchez, who is originally from Tampa, Fla., is preparing to marry his fiance, Courtney Krebs, in January. In his spare time he enjoys running, spending time with his fiance and watching premier league soccer.

Men’s Preview

he KU men return the bulk of the runners that combined for much of their success in 2010. Even though the Jayhawks lose the leadership and experience of outgoing senior Nick Caprario, several other men are fit to fill his spot at the front of the pack. The Jayhawks will once again be led by senior Donny Wasinger who has been the team’s top performer for the past three seasons. The Winona, Minn., native is coming off a season where he was an All-Big 12 selection after his 13th-place finish at the conference meet, earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships for his 10th-place finish at the NCAA Regionals, broke the 25-minute mark in each 8K race he competed in and became the first KU male to take part in the NCAA Championships since 2007. “Donny really had it figured out last year,” said assistant coach Mike Whittlesey. “He learned an awful lot throughout the season and gained a lot of confidence in himself and a lot of aggressiveness from a racing standpoint. I expect him to be up there at the top of the conference and go for AllAmerican.” With Wasinger looking to build on his already impressive resume, the coaches are hoping he can lead his teammates to a top finish at the conference and NCAA meets. “It’s those seasoned veterans that know how to train and mentally prepare for the big races and I think that’s where Donny is right now,” added Coach Redwine. “That will make him a great leader for this team because of his great experience.” Wasinger isn’t the only upperclassman looking to end his career in Lawrence on a high note. Fellow senior Austin Bussing was consistently a top performer for the Jayhawks in 2010, coming in as KU’s third finisher three times on the season. Bussing and Wasinger will be joined by fellow upperclassman Zach Zarda as the veteran leaders of this year’s men’s squad. Zarda saw action in two meets for the Jayhawks last season; the highlights coming in top-10 finishes at the both the Bob Timmons Classic and Missouri Cross Country Challenge. The veteran leadership and knowledge of these three fourth-year men will be a key ingredient for the success of the 2011 campaign.

Junior Josh Baden is coming off a fantastic sophomore season in 2010. He was one of only two Jayhawks to compete in all six meets, finishing in the team’s top four in four those races. Rounding out the upperclassmen for the men are Sean Proehl and Eric Dyson, who each bring speed and athleticism to give the team a more complete skill set. The KU men also return a strong class of sophomores that bring experience beyond their years. Jose Muñoz, Josh Munsch and Nikki Trooien-Smith were each members of the seven-man team that competed in the Big 12 Championships a year ago. Trooien-Smith and Muñoz also saw action at the Midwest Regionals, giving them experience few sophomores can bolster. Those three men being on the front lines for the Jayhawks this season will be instrumental in KU’s accomplishments. “We talked about the goals all summer long with this group of juniors and sophomores,” said Coach Whittlesey. “About how we need to be more effective as a team, and how we can’t just depend on the seniors to do it all this year. They’ve been training great this summer and hopefully it will show in the results come the first meet.” Rounding out the men’s team depth will be a group of five eager redshirt freshmen who have spent a year honing their skills at the collegiate level. Conner Day, James Wilson and Emilio Trujillo are a few who could help the KU men surprise teams around the country this year. “We redshirted a lot of freshmen last year so we’re expecting a much tighter pack from our guys,” Coach Whittlesey explained. “They really give us a well-rounded component to our group and it gives us a shot to run with any team in the country.” In addition, coaches Redwine and Whittlesey again have a talented and enthusiastic group of incoming freshmen that will be expected to contribute early and often to the season’s success. Six true freshmen are expected to suit up in the Crimson and Blue this year, all of which were the top performers for their respective high school teams.

The Women of Kansas

Women’s Preview

wenty-eleven is sure to be an action-packed season for the Kansas women, who return a key nucleus of runners that had standout seasons a year ago. Like the men, the Jayhawks lost a key aspect from last year’s squad in departing senior Amanda Miller. However, the coaches have their eyes on several women who will be able to fill the void left by Miller and beyond. Leading the KU nucleus will be senior Rebeka Stowe, who had a breakthrough season last year, becoming just the third KU woman to earn All-Big 12 honors while also leading the women’s team in all four races she competed in. “I expect Rebeka to be up there as one of the top runners in the country this year,” said Coach Whittlesey. “She was certainly close last year but she’s improved so much over the course of this year. I think we’re going to see some big things from her this season.”

Each were an integral aspect of the women’s team last season and now bring another year of experience that should prove beneficial. “One of the difficulties about last year was we had a lot of girls that hadn’t really had a full season of competition under their belt and hadn’t been in big races,” said Whittlesey. “Now they’ve been there. People like Tessa Turcotte, Allie Marquis and Kyra Kilwein are now veterans and I expect them to learn from last year, which was running as a stronger pack and running together more effectively.” Redshirt sophomore Natalie Becker will also be back in the Crimson and Blue and looks to have another solid season. She was the women’s No. 2 performer throughout 2010 and will help add versatility to the roster. “Even though she’s a sophomore, Natalie (Becker) is one of the veterans on this team,” added Coach Whittlesey. “She had a really good year last season and I’m excited to see what she will do this year.”

Cori Christensen, Devin Wiegers and Kara Windisch will join forces with Stowe to guide the women’s team as senior leaders this year. Windisch saw action in three of the bigger meets last season, with a top performance coming at the NCAA Midwest regionals in a 54th-place finish. “Kara Windisch should have an outstanding season,” Coach Whittlesey explained. “She really started coming along at the end of the last outdoor track season and I think she’s going to carry that over to this year.” Christensen and Wiegers each picked up valuable skills and confidence in the early meets last season and will hope those experiences can translate to some top performances in 2011. Each placed in the top 10 at the Bob Timmons Classic and Christensen placed ninth at the Missouri Cross Country Challenge to come in as KU’s fourth finisher. The coaches are expecting a lot out of the junior group of Kyra Kilwein, Allie Marquis, Kathleen Thompson

Like the men, the women have a solid group of redshirt freshmen that are primed to make a difference in 2011. Charlene Browne, Madison Moser, Lauren Guasto and Maddy Rich used the extra year of practice and preparation to learn from their coaches and teammates. They now add a much-needed aspect of depth to help round out the women’s roster. The women have added six newcomers to this year’s squad; five true freshmen and a sophomore transfer. While young, they are a talented group that will surely turn some heads once the season begins. “I expect our girls to try and run with Rebeka this year, whereas last year, I don’t think that was in everyone’s mindset,” concluded Coach Whittlesey. “The girls are going to start closing the gap on (Stowe) because they’ve improved so much, and that will make this a really solid team.”

A Look Back at the Jayhawks in 2010 It was a year of growth for the Kansas cross country teams, as a combined 25 underclassmen were featured on the men’s and women’s rosters as opposed to just five seniors. Juniors Donny Wasinger and Rebeka Stowe consistently led the Jayhawks during the 2010 campaign, while several others moved in and out of the top five throughout the season. Despite the young membership on both squads, KU put forth a valiant effort and posted many strong performances in 2010. The Jayhawks opened the season with a dominating performance, sweeping the men’s and women’s races at the annual Bob Timmons Classic. The Kansas women were nothing short of fantastic in the season’s opening meet, having eight Jayhawks finishing in the top 10. Lawrence native Kyra Kilwein took first at the meet, marking the first win of her young career. She crossed the finish line in a 5K personal-best time of 18:37.20, and joined five other Jayhawks who broke the 20-minute mark.

On the men’s side, junior Zach Zarda collected the highest finish of his career with a second-place finish. His 6K time of 19:01.30 would lead eight other Jayhawks who broke the 20-minute mark.

A week later at the Missouri Cross Country Challenge, more Jayhawk women stepped up as sophomores Allie Marquis and Tessa Turcotte finished second and third, respectively. Kilwein and Cori Christensen would also collect top-10 finishes with personal best times as the women came together for a second-place team finish at the meet.

The men found their stride, finishing first in team scoring for the second-straight week and placing four Jayhawks in the top five. Donny Wasinger made a triumphant return for the men, collecting a first-place finish with a time of 25:17.45 in the 8K race. Nick Caprario, Zarda and Austin Bussing rounded out the Jayhawks who each grabbed spots in the top five.

After a three week lay-off, the Jayhawks returned to action at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational in Madison, Wis. The women, who finished11th in the team standings, saw the return of junior Rebeka Stowe, who led the women with an individual 12th-place finish. Stowe’s 6K time of 20:31.10 was a career-best for the Olathe, Kan., native. Redshirt freshman Natalie Becker also had a break out race, becoming the Jayhawks’ No. 2 finisher and placing 54th overall, crossing the finish line in 21:20.50. Wasinger once again led the KU men, this time to a 16th-place team finish. Like Stowe, Wasinger too set a personal best with his 8K time of 24:02.80 in a 24th-place finish. Senior Nick Caprario also ran his best race of the season, notching the team’s No. 2 finish for the second-straight meet. Caprario crossed the finish line in 24:30.20 to place 54th.

In the most competitive field of the season for Kansas, the Jayhawk men and women finished 18th and 24th, respectively, at the ISU Pre-Nationals meet (Oct. 16), held on the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind.

Stowe led the women’s team for the second-consecutive race, placing 16th individually with a 6K time of 20:43.90. She was followed by Becker who finished 52nd overall in 21:25. Leading the Jayhawk men for the thrid-straight meet was Wasinger, who finished in 47th place after running a 24:33.70 8K. He was again followed by Caprario at 25:13.30 (116th). Next up for the Jayhawks was the much anticipated Big 12 Championships hosted by Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla. Stowe put together another masterful performance, finishing in 12th place with a 6K time of 20:43.44, becoming only the third women’s runner in Kansas history to earn All-Big 12 honors. Becker would again take KU’s No. 2 finish, running a 21:41.64 6K and placing 39th overall. Amanda Miller (21:53.93), Marquis (21:57.39), and Tessa Turcotte (21:58) would round out the top five KU women’s finishers, earning a seventh-place team finish.

As he had done in the three previous meets, Wasinger again paced the KU men, who, like the women, would go on to earn a seventh-place team finish. Wasinger notched a 13th-place individual finish, his best ever at the conference meet.

Led by top-31 performances from the usual suspects (Stowe, Wasinger, Caprario and Becker), the Kansas men’s and women’s teams finished 11th and sixth, respectively, at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships, held at Newman Golf Course near the campus of Bradley University. Stowe finished in 18th place with a 6K time of 20:40.33 to lead the KU women. The finish marked the fourth-consecutive race Stowe placed in the top-20, breaking the 21 minute mark in each.

It was a day to remember for Wasinger, who was once again the highest finisher for the men’s team in his second career 10K race. His 10th-place finish earned him an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships ans his time of 30:05.30 would smash his previous best, making him the first KU male to compete at the NCAA meet since 2007.

Midwest Regionals marked the final event of the 2010 season for almost all of the Jayhawks, but the team said goodbye to only two (Nick Caprario and Amanda Miller) of 13 runners who competed at the event. Caprario was a four-year letterwinner and a three-time Academic All-Big 12 Second Team selection. He ran in five races as a senior, posting a career-best 8K time (24:30.20) at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational as well as a career best 10K time (30:50.05) at the Midwest Regionals. Miller was also a four-year letterwinner as well as the team’s captain for two seasons. She was a three-time Academic All-Big 12 selection and posted five top-10 finishes throughout her career. She ran in four meets her senior season including a personal best 6K time (21:41.60) at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational.

While the season was over the majority of his teammates, Wasinger saw action in his first NCAA Championship Meet at LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course near the campus of Indiana State Univeristy. Despite fighting sickness and running against the toughest competition in the country, Wasinger put up a strong valiant effort on a cold day in Terre Haute. He would conclude his 2010 season with a 233rd-place finish and a 10K time of 33:02.7.

Rim Rock Farm The University of Kansas hosts its home cross country meets at historic Rim Rock Farm, northwest of Lawrence. Before being donated to KU in 2004, the property was owned by former head track and field and cross country coach Bob Timmons and has been the home of the Jayhawks since the 1974 season. Any runner or spectator will say that the course is quite challenging and unique. In addition to having two covered bridges as part of the course, Rim Rock Farm also features specific hills, turns and other landmarks that are named after former Jayhawk greats. Dispersed throughout the course are silhouette statues of seven legendary Jayhawk distance runners including Herb Semper, Al Frame, John Lawson and Olympians Billy Mills, Wes Santee, Glenn Cunningham and Jim Ryun. Rim Rock Farm was the vision of Coach Timmons, who, during his 23-year tenure, won two cross country conference championships. “There is something for everyone at Rim Rock Farm,” Timmons said. “Parents are afforded the opportunity to walk around throughout the course and find all the wonderful places to observe. Spectators can catch the runners three or four times throughout the event and explore the different elevations. And the runners can navigate a course that will challenge them with its obstacles and amaze them with its beauty. That’s what makes Rim Rock Farm so exciting.” In the fall of 2006, Rim Rock Farm played host to its first Big 12 Cross Country Conference Championships. Rim Rock Farm hosted the Big Eight Cross Country Championships in 1983, 1991 and 1995, and was also the site of the 1998 NCAA Division I and II Cross Country Championships as well as numerous Kansas high school state meets. Rim Rock Farm is home of the Jayhawks, but also home to former Kansas runner Steve Heffernan. After donating the course to KU, Timmons made sure that the cozy house in the middle of the farm had a full-time tenant. Heffernan is currently responsible for the farm’s upkeep, while also serving as head coach of cross country and track and field at Lawrence Free State High School.

Kansas Tradition

ew collegiate cross country and track programs have the heritage and tradition the Kansas program bestowes. Mount Oread has been home to some of the greatest distance runners and coaches in the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history and has been at the center of the evolution of cross country and track and field over the past century. The Jayhawk program has seen 27 All-Americans, 15 conference champions, five national champions and five future Olympians suit up in the Crimson and Blue as well as two legendary coaches who are now enshrined in numerous Hall of Fames around the country. Former American and world record holders such as Jim Ryun, Wes Santee and Billy Mills each kicked off their legendary running careers in Lawrence and have joined throngs of other KU men and women who have established Kansas cross country as a tradition-rich national power.

The 1953 National Championship team from Kansas is still considered to be one of the most complete and strongest teams to ever take home a NCAA title. On a cool and windy late November day in 1953, the six men on that team ran their way into Jayhawk immortality. Led by individual champion Wes Santee, the Jayhawks placed four of their six runners in the top 40, earning 70 points and besting runner-up Indiana by 11. The championship catapulted an already prestigious Kansas program into a perennial national championship contender, winning the next six-straight conference championships and taking teams to 10 of the next 15 NCAA Championship meets. The 1953 championship was one of the many highlights of coach Bill Eastonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 17-year tenure at KU, earning him his only cross country championship while at Kansas, but giving him the fourth title of his 25-year coaching career. This championship has stamped its place along side the many KU legends.

LEGENDS Benson Chesang (2003-06) When ranking Kansas runners from the modern era, Benson Chesang is an easy selection for the top of the list. The Kenya native won the Big 12 Championships two straight years, the first KU runner to do so since 1954-55, when John Lawson won back-to-back conference titles. Chesang was just the fifth man in school history to run in three NCAA Championship meets and recorded the highest KU finish in the 2004 meet (seventh) since CHESANG’S ACCOLADES Brent Steiner took seventh in • Two-time Big 12 Champion (2004, 2005) 1984. In 2005 he helped the men’s team to a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, the Jayhawks’ best result at Nationals since 1989. He was also Big 12 Runner of the Week multiple times for his constant top-10 finishes.

Glenn Cunningham (1931-33) One of the earliest cross country greats to don the Crimson and Blue was Glenn Cunningham. A member of the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame, Cunningham was a two-time Big Six Conference cross country champion, capturing the league crown in 1931 and 1932. Cunningham also excelled in track and field while at Kansas, breaking the world record in the indoor 1,500 meters (3:53.3) in 1934 and both the indoor mile (4:08.4) in 1932 and the outdoor mile (4:06.7) in 1933. During his tenure on the track at KU, he served as team captain in 1934 and won 12 conference championships: four indoor (1932-34, mile run and 1934, 880-yard run) and eight outdoor (1932-34, mile run; 1932-34, 880-yard run; 1933-34, two-mile run). In 1932 and 1933, Cunningham was the NCAA champion in the mile run, earning All-America accolades in the process. A two-time Olympian in the 1,500 meters (1932 and 1936), Cunningham won the silver medal at the 1936 summer games in Berlin. In 1974, he became one of the first inductees into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame.

LEGENDS Bill Easton (1948-65) In a career that spanned three decades, Bill Easton built a reputation as one of the nation’s best track and field coaches. Before coming to Kansas in 1948, Easton won three-straight cross country NCAA Championships with Drake University while also serving as the meet director for the Drake Relays. At Kansas, Easton’s teams were always near the top of the conference. His cross country teams won 15 conference championships and never finished worse than second in his 18 years as coach. He won conference titles in cross country, indoor and outdoor track for eight consecutive years. The first highlight of Easton’s Jayhawk career came in 1953 when his cross country team won the NCAA Championship. He later won the 1959 and 1960 outdoor men’s track and field titles. Easton coached 32 All-Americans including Wes Santee, Herb Semper, Al Frame, Billy Mills and John Lawson. In track and field, he mentored Olympic champions Bill Nieder and Al Oerter. All together, Easton coached eight Olympians. His KU athletes set 14 intercollegiate records, seven NCAA records, 14 American records, four Olympic records and four EASTON’S ACCOLADES world records. Al Frame (1952-55) Al Frame carved out an impressive cross country and track and field career while attending the University of Kansas. A member of the 1953 NCAA championship team, Frame won the individual NCAA championship in 1954. Under the tutelage of head coach Bill Easton, Frame was a member of three Big Seven Conference championship teams while at KU. He also won two Big Seven individual championships, netting the accomplishment in back-to-back years (1954 and 1955) and was the last Jayhawk to do so until Benson Chesang won the Big 12 Championship in consecutive years (2004 and 2005). A 1954 and 1955 All-America honoree, Frame, like so many before him, also found success on the track and field team. During his time on the team, Frame captured six Big Seven Conference championships: four indoor (1954, two-mile run; 1955-56, mile run; 1956, 880-yard run) and two outdoor (1955, mile run; 1955, two-mile run). A third-place finish at the outdoor NCAA Championships in 1955 added AllAmerica status to Frame’s resume. LEGENDS John Lawson (1963-66) As the most recent Kansas cross country runner to win the NCAA championship, John Lawson’s career signals yet another chapter in the golden era of Kansas cross country. In 1965, Lawson pulled off an impressive sweep, capturing both the Big Eight Conference championship and the NCAA individual title and was recognized with All-America status. A member of the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame, Lawson also performed valiantly on the Kansas track and field team, earning three All-America awards: one indoor for his second-place performance in the two-mile run and two outdoor for consecutive second-place finishes in the three-mile run in 1965 and 1966. At the conference level, Lawson captured four individual championships: three indoor (1964 and 1966, two-mile run; 1966, mile run) and one outdoor (1965, three-mile run). Lawson’s statue at Rim Rock Farm can be found near the end of the third mile of the course, southwest of the finish line.

Billy Mills (1958-61) Gold medalist. All-American. Hall-of-Famer. Kansas Jayhawk. All these accolades describe Billy Mills, who made his impact on the Kansas tradition with golden footprints. A two-time All-American (1958 and 1959), Mills captured the 1960 Big Eight cross country championship. He was also a part of two Big Eight Conference team titles while at KU (1958 and 1959) under head coach Bill Easton. However, Mills’ legacy at KU extends far beyond the borders of the Sunflower State. A member of the 1964 United States Olympic team, Mills won the gold medal in the 10,000 meters and set a new Olympic record. In dramatic fashion, Mills came from behind on the last lap to win the race in Tokyo and to this day, he is still the only American to win the event. Mills’ success was also evident on the track and field team, as he set a world record in the six-mile run in 1965 (27:11.6). He won two Big Eight Conference Individual Championships, capturing both the indoor and outdoor champion- MILLS’ ACCOLADES ships in 1961, and was a member • 1958 and 1959 All-American of both the 1959 and 1960 NCAA • 1960 Big Eight Cross Country Champion championship track teams. • 1964 10,000 meter Olympic Gold Medalist Inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1976, Mills’ iconic statue, in which his arms are raised high, is placed on the last straightaway of Rim Rock Farm, saluting the runners for their perseverance and will to compete. In fact, the pose of Mills’ silhouette is identical to the one he struck upon winning the gold medal at the 1964 Olympics.

LEGENDS Jim Ryun (1966-69) There is perhaps no other athlete more associated with Kansas distance running than Jim Ryun. His legend extends far beyond his KU accomplishments. A three-time Olympian (1964, 1968 and 1972), Ryun captured silver at the 1968 games in Mexico City in the 1,500 meters, duplicating the performance of former Jayhawk Glenn Cunningham at the 1936 games. During his tenure at KU from 1966-69, Ryun broke five world records, including the world outdoor mile record twice, and also claimed five individual NCAA titles. Before attending Kansas, Ryun became the first high school runner to complete the mile run in under four minutes. In addition, his national high school mile record of 3:55.3, set over 30 years ago, still stands today for events completed in the U.S. Inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1982, Ryun’s statue at Rim Rock Farm sits atop the Jim Ryun Skyline Bend and is among the first statues visitors see when turning into RYUN’S WORLD RECORDS AT KU Rim Rock Farm. Wes Santee (1952-55) A legendary Kansas Jayhawk, Wes Santee’s contributions to Kansas cross country and track and field are among the bedrocks of the tradition-rich heritage. Santee, an Ashland, Kan., native, captured the NCAA championship in 1953, giving KU the individual crown for the third time in four years. In fact, Santee’s All-America performance at the 1953 NCAA Championships propelled the Kansas cross country team to the NCAA title, the only cross country team in KU’s history to achieve the feat. Santee also excelled at the conference level, claiming back-to-back league championships in 1952 and 1953 and helping his team collect two Big Seven Conference championships (1952 and 1953). Santee was a member of the 1952 U.S. Olympic team in the 5,000 meters. He broke three world records while at Kansas, twice setting new marks in the indoor mile run (1954, 4:04.9; 1955, 4:03.8) and in the outdoor 1,500 meters (1954, 3:42.8). A two-time outdoor All-American, Santee won the 5,000 meters in 1952 and the mile run in 1953. Santee collected seven conference championships: four indoor (1952-54, mile run; 1953, 880 yards) and four outdoor (1952-54, mile run; 1953, SANTEE’S ACCOLADES 880 yards). LEGENDS Herb Semper (1949-52) A member of the Kansas cross country program during its golden era under the direction of head coach Bill Easton, Herb Semper firmly established his mark in the lore of Kansas cross country. Semper became the first Jayhawk to win an NCAA championship, prevailing in 1950 and then again in 1951. He remains the only runner in KU history to win two cross country individual national championships. Under Easton’s guidance, Semper was a member of two Big Seven Conference championship teams (1950 and 1951) and was a two-time Big Seven individual champion (1950 and 1951). Semper is also a member of the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame. Semper’s excellence extended to the Kansas track and field team as well. Semper’s statue at Rim Rock Farm is surrounded by three ponds (Teardrop Pond, Jayhawk Pond and Pat’s Little Pond) on the northeast portion of the course.

Julia Saul (1991-1993) Arguably the greatest female runner Kansas cross country has ever seen, Julia Saul was the catalyst that began the rise of the women’s program. After the Lawrence native transfered to KU from Oregon following the 1990 season, she put together a list of accolades that no other woman in the Crimson and Blue has been able to match. To this day she is the only female cross country AllAmerican in Kansas history, earning the honor with her 18th-place finish at the 1992 NCAA Championships. A three-time All-Big Eight and All-District V selection, she collected a total of six individual titles throughout her career, including the 1991 District V title. Saul become just the fifth Jayhawk in the history of both the men’s and women’s programs to run in three NCAA Championship meets, finishing 32nd, 16th and 65th in the three races. She was the top KU finisher in all but three races she competed in during her three SAUL’S ACCOLADES years and never finished lower • First Female KU Cross Country All-American than fourth at the Big Eight • Six individual titles at Kansas • Two Big Eight track titles in 1992 Championships. • 1991 District V Champion

Saul’s track career was just has decorated as her time with cross country. She was a two-time Big Eight Champion, claiming her first title in the 5,000 meters at the 1992 Indoor Championships, and her second coming later that year in the 10,000 meters at the 1992 Outdoor Championships. She still holds the school record in the outdoor 5,000-meters and, until 2010, also held the indoor 5,000 meter school record.

LEGENDS Bob Timmons (1968-88) Bob Timmons is to Kansas Cross Country what Phog Allen is to Kansas Basketball. The man who coached KU to four NCAA Track and Field Championships is perhaps most noted for bringing Jim Ryun to Lawrence. Timmons coached Ryun at Wichita East High School until 1964, when he became an assistant at KU for a year under Bill Easton. Ryun then followed Timmons to Kansas where he continued to thrive under Timmons’ coaching. Timmons was an 11-time NCAA District V Coach of the Year and was the 1975 U.S. Track and Field Coaches Association National Coach of the Year. At the helm of the KU track and field program, he led the Jayhawks to 13 indoor league crowns and 14 outdoor titles. In cross country, Timmons guided John Lawson to the 1965 NCAA Individual Championship. In 1970, Timmons and his wife, Pat, purchased land just north of Lawrence. In 1974 that property became known as Rim Rock Farm, and it has been home of the Jayhawk Cross Country teams ever since. Rim Rock Farm is known as one of the best and TIMMONS’ ACCOLADES toughest • 11-time NCAA District V Coach of the Year cross country • Four Track and Field NCAA Championships courses in the nation and is a credit • 1975 USTFCA National Coach of the Year to Timmons’ vision and passion for the sport. The annual Bob Timmons Classic is held each September in the legendary coach’s honor on the course he put so much work into. During his career, Timmons coached 77 All-Americans, 24 NCAA champions, 16 world record holders and seven Olympians. Timmons is a member of the Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of Fame, the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame and the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.

Colby Wissel

On October 27, 2006, Kansas junior Colby Wissel became the 15th Jayhawk to be crowned a conference champion. The Elm Creek, Neb., native overcame the blustery and muddy conditions to finish the 8k race in 24:34 and helped guide the Kansas menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s team to a third-place finish. It was a momentous victory for Wissel as well as the rest of the Jayhawk program and was made even more special because it was done on KUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s home course, Rim Rock Farm. Wissel blazed past Texas senior Joe Thorne in the final 1,000 meters of the race to give KU its third-straight individual conference champion. The victory vaulted the junior into illustrious company with other past Kansas conference champions like Wes Santee, Billy Mills, Herb Semper and Al Frame. Wissel remains the most recent Big 12 champion to don the Crimson and Blue.

Academics The Student-Athlete Support Services staff focuses all collective resources in support of the academic, personal and interpersonal development of each individual it serves. As part of its commitment to the academic success of its athletes, Kansas Athletics completed a new academic complex in the summer of 2009. Strategic and Instructional Tutoring Programs

• STP schedules more than 900 hours of tutoring each week for more than 250 student-athletes. • STP has 75 tutors who work with all student-athletes who request tutoring assistance. • Tutoring is available to any student-athlete, regardless of scholarship status or sport. • Many of the tutors working within STP are instructors or teaching assistants at KU. Some are undergraduate students who have excelled in their respective subject areas. • Research studies have found the Strategic Tutoring Program to be an effective program for under-prepared student-athletes and highly skilled students alike. • Student-athletes report a high level of satisfaction with the STP. • Both programs offer individualized tutoring as well as small study groups.

2010 Cross Country Academic Honors • Men’s and Women’s teams achieved Academic Progress Rate (APR) of 1,000 for second-straight year, placing them in the top 10 percent in the country. • Rebeka Stowe named to USTFCCCA All-Academic team for 3.66 GPA during the Fall 2010 semester. • Women’s team earned All-Academic team distinction from USTFCCCA for attaining a team GPA of 3.22 for the Fall 2010 semester. • Ten Jayhawks named to Academic AllBig 12 teams. Meet the Chancellor

Dr. Bernadette Gray-Little

A highly regarded scholar, teacher and university leader, Bernadette Gray-Little began her tenure as the 17th chancellor of the University of Kansas on Aug. 15, 2009. As KU chancellor, Gray-Little is the chief executive officer of the university, overseeing campuses in Lawrence, Kansas City, Overland Park and Wichita, as well as research and educational centers in Garden City, Hays, Parsons, Pittsburg, Topeka and Yoder. Chancellor Gray-Little’s goals for KU include enhancing student achievement so that more KU students graduate in four years, as well as spurring more research and scholarly activities that enhance quality of life and create economic growth. During her first year as chancellor she also has made it a point to meet with Kansans and with KU alumni throughout the state and nation to learn about their aspirations for the university. Gray-Little was one of four university leaders selected to represent the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities at a White House summit on math and science education in January 2010. She is also on the board of trustees for the Online Computer Library Center, an international organization dedicated to expanding public access to information and research. Gray-Little previously was executive vice chancellor and provost from 2006 to 2009 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A professor of psychology, she rose to the post of UNC’s chief academic officer after successive administrative appointments, including dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. While at UNC, she earned a reputation as a champion for the highest quality educational experience for students and a strong advocate for faculty and for research. A native of eastern North Carolina, Gray-Little received her bachelor’s degree from Marywood College in Scranton, Pa., and her master’s and doctoral degrees in psychology from Saint Louis University. She earned a Fulbright Fellowship to study in Denmark. She also served as a Social Science Research Council Fellow and received a Ford Foundation Senior Scholar Fellowship through the National Research Council. Gray-Little is married to Shade Key Little. They have two adult children and one grandchild.

Meet the Athletics Director

Dr. Sheahon Zenger

Zenger comes to KU after serving for five years as athletics director at Illinois State University, helping steer ISU Athletics to a place of prominence in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Redbirds won a conference-leading seven league titles during the 2009-10 season and captured their second Valley All-Sports Trophy in three years. In the beginning, Zenger wasn’t headed toward a career in administration. He was nine years old when he told his father he wanted to be a coach, and it didn’t take long for that dream to materialize. After playing football at Fort Hays State and Mid-American Nazarene College, he finished his undergraduate degree at Kansas State. Even before he received his bachelor’s degree in English and secondary education in 1988, Zenger was assisting the football coaches at Manhattan (Kan.) High School. His first college football coaching job came at Drake University right after graduation. In 1989, at age 23, Zenger joined Bill Snyder’s staff at Kansas State as one of the nation’s youngest full-time football staff members; he served in key roles as assistant recruiting coordinator and director of football operations. Zenger completed his master’s degree in journalism and mass communication in 1992 while helping Snyder bring Wildcat football to unprecedented success. Zenger would then seek advice from then-KU Chancellor Gene Budig, who convinced him to pursue a Ph.D. at KU. As he completed his Ph.D. in educational policy and leadership (1996), Zenger contributed communications and special projects support to the office of the executive vice-chancellor, Ed Meyen, and wrote the professional life history of then-chancellor Del Shankel, while strengthening his understanding of university leadership at the highest levels. Still, coaching stayed in his blood. After earning his doctorate, Zenger in 1996 signed on as the recruiting coordinator for the brand-new NCAA Division I football program at the University of South Florida. A year later he joined the University of Wyoming football staff as recruiting coordinator and within two years rose to assistant head coach, a position he still considers one of the crowning achievements of his career. Zenger stayed at Wyoming through the 2000 season before returning to Kansas State. He spent a year in the KSU College of Business, raising more than $2 million and restructuring its development program with research and planning. He rejoined KSU Athletics in 2001 as assistant athletics director for major gifts, helping KSU initiate important development strategies. In 2002 he was appointed KSU’s associate athletics director for development, a position he held until 2005, when he was named Athletics Director at Illinois State. A published author and researcher, Zenger served for three years on the NCAA Division I Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement. In its first 15 years, the Conference has distributed more than $1.4 billion to its member institutions. The conference office is headquartered in Irving, Texas.

The Conference conducts championships for 20 of its 23 sports. Each championship helps to determine teams and/or individuals that will represent the Conference in national postseason competition. The winner of the Big 12 football regular season championship earns the league’s berth into the Bowl Championship Series.

The new six-lane track (eight lanes on the sprint straightaway) replaces the existing track, which is the original track installed when Anschutz was built in 1984. The 231-meter oval was converted into a 200-meter track, the current standard for indoor facilities. Other improvements include new, reconďŹ gured jump pits, and a new pole vault box and runway, all of which will improve spectator viewing. It also includes a Hobart topping in all training and competition areas that will provide durability, stain resistance and longevity.The new Daktronics results board contains an active area of nearly 18 feet high and 16 feet wide. Daktronics will also install a new state-of-the-art sound system.

In 2009, Kansas completed a state-of-the-art cross country/track and ďŹ eld locker room, lounge and acquatic rehabilitation center. These facilites at KU lead the rest of the Big 12 Conference, and are among the top athletic facilites in the country.
