WE ARE KANSAS

HARD WORK Although the traditional season happens in the spring, the Kansas softball team puts in work year round. The Jayhawks report in the fall for individual workouts on the field and in the weightroom, while also playing a fall schedule. Once they return to campus after winter break, two-a-days and intense preseason camp gets the Jayhawks ready for the spring.

WE ARE KANSAS 5

“We’re athletic, we’re competitive and this team is just fun to be around. The energy is very positive. We’re very ready to do what it takes to win and do what it takes to get to (NCAA) Regionals, which is our goal.”

ARROCHA BALLPARK NAMESAKE

WE ARE KANSAS

Named after Kansas business woman Cheryl Womack’s father, Demostenes Arrocha. Womack donated the $2 million needed to fund construction of the ballpark.

ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK

6

PACK THE PARK

Arrocha Ballpark holds 750 fans. The Jayhawks averaged 617 fans per game in 2012, fourth in the Big 12.

TRADITION

After every game, the Jayhawks sing the Rock Chalk chant to their faithful fans - who chants back at their team.

MEDIA

Prior to the 2012 season, a press box was added, making it possible for all home games to be broadcast via online radio on AT&T Jayhawk All-Access.

LOCKER ROOM Located just a quick walk from the ballpark, the Kansas softball locker room is a second home to the Jayhawks and gives the team a place to focus and prepare on gameday. Not only do the Jayhawks get ready for games here, the locker room is also an easy way for the team to make it to morning workouts, shower and make it to class in comfort.

WE ARE KANSAS 7

PHOTO OF TEAM ROOM

Before players can get to the locker room, they pass through the team room. A great place for a nap or hanging out with teammates, the Jayhawks always have a place to come before and after practice or between classes. A flat-screen TV and several kitchen amenities are also housed in the team room, providing a place for homework - and the occasional nap.

ROCK CHALK PARK THE STADIUM

WE ARE KANSAS

In January 2013, the City Commission of Lawrence approved the proposal to build Rock Chalk Park, the site for brand-new, state-of-the-art track and field, soccer and softball facilities. The new park will double KU softball’s fan capacity and will be located near the intersection of 6th Street and George Williams Way, just east of K-10, in Lawrence.

THE INDOOR TRAINING CENTER

Aside from the new stadium, which will hold 1,500 fans, Rock Chalk Park will also see a vital addition to the Jayhawk softball program. A state-of-the art indoor training facility will be constructed next to the stadium, providing the team a softball-only facility for workouts during the winter months and all year round. Batting cages and bullpens will make it possible for players to train individually, as well.

DR. SHEAHON ZENGER, KU ATHLETICS DIRECTOR

“Thanks to our partnership with KU Endowment and Thomas and Dru Fritzel, we are now able to do something for the University of Kansas and the City of Lawrence that will raise our standing on the map in the world of athletics. I said from the day I took this job: This is the University of Kansas; this is the flagship institution of this great State. Initiatives like this help us act like it.”

Rock Chalk Park will serve as home to Kansas softball games, soccer matches and track meets, but it will also house their own coaches’ offices, training room facilities and locker rooms - in essence, a way for teams to form a community even away from campus.

“I honestly didn’t believe it at first, but when I saw the plans drawn up I realized that it’s actually going to happen. It’s definitely an exciting thing for the program to have and it’s exciting for us. Words can’t describe it, I’m so excited.” Elsa Moyer, junior outfielder “I’m so excited and I’m even more excited that I’m going to be here when it’s finished. It’s going to be great; I can’t wait.” Alicia Pille, sophomore pitcher

9 2013 KANSAS SOFTBALL

“We are extremely excited about Rock Chalk Park. We’ve waitied a long time to get a facility that would compare to others in our conference. We’re finally getting that. It shows dedication to our sport and the belief that Dr. Zenger wants to help us continue to grow and get better. We’re going to be able to make really big strides with that park. It’s going to be state-of-the art and really nice. We’re really excited about it.” Megan Smith, head coach

STRENGTH COACH

WE ARE KANSAS

Kansas softball strength coach Patricia Dietz joined the Kansas strength and conditioning program in summer 2011. A two-sport athlete at Northern Iowa, Dietz also works with the women’s basketball and soccer teams, all while pursuing her doctoral degree (PhD) in the field of exercise science.

ATHLETE-ONLY

The $8 million, 42,000-square foot facility is dedicated to Kansas student-athletes only.

TRIATHLON

An annual tradition, the Rock Chalk Teams - which the coaching staff designates each year - dress in Halloween costumes and compete in the Rock Chalk Triathlon. The course begins with six miles of biking, followed by a 2.2-mile run on campus and ends with three laps inside the competition pool in the Robinson Natatorium.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT

The University of Kansas offers student-athletes an academic support program designed to help them meet the challenge of accommodating both athletic and academic demands. The purpose of the program is to help student-athletes become efficient and effective learners who will become capable of independently meeting the demands of the university’s academic programs. Tutoring is available for all studentathletes, regardless of scholarship status or sport.

WE ARE KANSAS

Each sport has its own sport counselor who is responsible for making sure student-athletes make acceptable progress toward their degrees.

• Located on the northwest corner of the Kansas Athletics complex • Completed in May 2009 • $5 million, 15,600-square foot facility complete with a 36-computer technology lab • 24 individual tutoring rooms along with informal group study areas • 19 private offices for staff to meet with athletes

SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY

Dr. Sheriece Sadberry and her staff provide a strengths-based approach to individual counseling to assist student-athletes in the achievement of personal, educational and sport goals. Performance enhancement training teaches student-athletes how to monitor and control various psychological characteristics which have been found to impact performance. In individual sessions, student-athletes can learn how to develop, maintain and replicate mental states which have been found to enhance their physical performances. Through group sessions and team-building activities, the sport psychology staff help teams identify what they do well as a group and what they may need to improve upon to achieve peak performance.

CITY OF LAWRENCE

Ranked among the top-10 college cities by ParentsAndColleges.com, Lawrence is home to approximately 90,000 people for a city feel with a close-knit college town mentality. A community that supports the University of Kansas with its heart and soul, Lawrence envelops the students so they too think of it as their hometown. A hot bed for local music, concerts and a great downtown, Lawrence is also rich with history. Founded in 1854 by the New England Emigrant Aid Society, Lawrence was originally founded in an effort to keep the territory free from slavery.

TRADITIONS

ROCK CHALK CHANT

WE ARE KANSAS

The Rock Chalk Chant has been the battle cry of KU fans for more than 80 years. This strange, traditional chant, which is among the most famous of all college cheers, was started by E.H.S. Bailey, a professor of chemistry. Bailey wanted a cheer for his Science Club. Returning from a convention in Wichita, Bailey and some associates patterned a yell after the rhythmic cadence of their train rolling along the tracks. On May 21, 1886, Bailey submitted the cheer to his club. Before the University adopted the cheer in 1897, it consisted of “Rah, Rah, Jayhawk, KU” being repeated three times. An English professor soon suggested that “Rock Chalk” be substituted for “Rah, Rah” because it rhymed with Jayhawk. “Rock Chalk” was also symbolic of the chalky limestone formations found on Mount Oread. Teddy Roosevelt once said the Rock Chalk chant was the best he had ever heard.

ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK

20

WAVE THE WHEAT

Since the early days of KU sports, it has been a ritual of Jayhawk fans to “wave the wheat” following every Kansas scoring drive. The ritual consists of fans waving their arms in the air, an activity which, when done by a large crowd, resembles a breezy Kansas wheat field.

THE JAYHAWK

During the Civil War, a regiment raised by Kansas Governor Charles Robinson called itself the “Independent Mounted Jayhawks” (later officially the First Kansas Calvary and then the Seventh Kansas Regiment). By the end of the Civil War, the word Jayhawk was associated with the spirit of camaraderie and the courageous fighting qualities that characterized efforts to keep Kansas a free state. By 1886, the University of Kansas had adopted the mythical bird as part of the KU yell. When the university’s football team first took the field in 1890, it seemed only natural that they should be called Jayhawkers. Few colleges and universities have such a meaningful symbol, one so deeply associated with the struggles of the people who founded them. The name combines two birds - the blue jay, a noisy, quarrelsome thing known to rob other nests, and the sparrow hawk, a stealthy hunter. The message here: Don’t turn your back on this bird.

Campanile Hill forms the picturesque backdrop for Memorial Stadium. On a sunny fall Saturday, the “Hill” is transformed into a congregating place for watching Jayhawk football, sunning and barbequing. Potter Lake, just to the southeast of Memorial Stadium and at the bottom of Campanile Hill, adds to the beauty of the Kansas campus.

HEAD COACH MEGAN SMITH

FOURTH SEASON

COACHES AND STAFF

Megan Smith enters her fourth season as head coach of the Jayhawk softball team in 2013. The eighth head coach in program history, Smith will coach her first full-round of signees as her first freshman class begin their senior season this year. Smith, who previously spent three seasons as an assistant coach at perennial power Louisiana State University, was named the Jayhawks’ head coach on June 24, 2009.

In 2012, the Jayhawks recorded their second 30-win season in Smith’s three years. Her squad finished the year 31-20, which included an programrecord 20-game win streak. For more than a month, crossing into February and March, the Jayhawks didn’t lose a game - all of which were on the road. Additionally, the Jayhawks recorded their first home victories since 2010, going 9-6 at Arrocha Ballpark. Among those wins included series victories over Oklahoma State and Iowa State, as well as splitting a two-game set with nationally-ranked Texas Tech. For the entirety of the 2012 season, Smith’s team was top-50 in the NCAA’s RPI. Individually, Smith guided junior Maggie Hull to become the program’s 11th Academic All-American. Hull was also named All-Big 12 First Team and NFCA All-Region First Team - KU’s first in either category since 2006. Under Smith’s direction, Hull hit .409 to break the school’s single-season batting average record. Freshmen Chanin Naudin and Maddie Stein joined Hull on the All-Big 12 honoree list. Both were awarded Second Team acclaim, marking the most All-Conference selections by a Kansas team since 2008. Kansas received votes on the USA Today/NFCA poll, the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll or both during five weeks of the season. At the conclusion of the 2012 regular season, KU’s offense ranked in the top-five in the Big 12 in batting average (.288, 4th), hits (382, 5th) and doubles (61, 4th). In the circle, KU ranked in the league’s top-five in strikeouts (294, 5th), saves (5, 2nd) and runners caught stealing (12, 3rd).

In 2011, Smith guided her team to an 11.5-game improvement from the 2010 season, which marked the 16th-best turnaround in NCAA history. Kansas softball persevered through a hefty travel schedule and challenging conference season to wrap up her second campaign with a 31-22 overall mark.

The red-hot Ultimate Co in the Top continued to

Slightly less than half of the opponents KU matched up against were ranked in the top 25. Additionally, 12 of the Jayhawks’ foes went on to play in the NCAA Tournament. KU was just shy of its own postseason bid, despite a top-50 RPI and a team-record 60 home runs last season, surpassing the old club record of 54 set back in 2005.

Smith guide recognition, her players

Playing as a member of the Big 12 Conference, the league’s 2011 campaign was once again one of the toughest in the country with at least seven teams ranked in the top 25 all season, while the league averaged an RPI of 23.5, second to only the Pac-10 (19.9). The Jayhawks went undefeated in the team’s first 10 games, which was the best start to any season in program history. The team later racked up another doubledigit win streak, 11 games, to help the Jayhawks win five of their six pre-conference tournaments as they compiled a 26-3 record heading into Big 12 Conference play. KU’s 30-win season also included two upsets over nationally-ranked opponents, No. 25 Texas Tech and No. 25 North Carolina.

Among the Tigers’ three tournament appearances with Smith in the dugout, LSU made an appearance in the 2007 Super Regionals. That year, the Tigers also won their fifth SEC Tournament, while posting the program’s third-best fielding mark with a .970 fielding percentage. While with LSU, Smith also shared responsibilities for practice planning and recruiting, and organized camps and clinics.

COACHES AND STAFF

Prior to LSU, Smith served as the head coach at Western Carolina in WCU’s inaugural season in 2006. There, Smith orchestrated a storybook season in which the Catamounts compiled a 41-20 record, including a 16-4 conference mark that earned them the regular season championship and warranted conference coach of the year honors for Smith. The Southern Conference also awarded Smith’s players with conference pitcher of the year and freshman of the year accolades, while six Catamounts were named all-conference, including five selections on the first team.

PRE-COACHING YEARS Megan Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in exercise and sport science and recreation administration at North Carolina in 1999. Primarily a third baseman, she served as team captain her senior season and was named the team’s Defensive Player of the Year. Smith also owns the Tar Heels’ third-most career assists record as well as the program’s singlegame RBI record. An exceptional student, the Walkertown, N.C., native was named to the ACC Honor Roll on three occasions and made the Dean’s List twice. In 2000, she earned her Master’s of Science degree in human performance and sports studies with a concentration in sports management from the University of Tennessee.

WCU’s offense belted a Southern Conference record 81 home runs that season, which ranked third nationally, and Ashley Adams set a Southern Conference single-season record with 21 round-trippers. The Catamounts also ranked among the NCAA Top 50 in slugging percentage, runs, win-loss percentage and batting average. In addition to the team’s accomplishments, a WCU player was selected SoCon pitcher or player of the week nine times throughout the season. Mendy McKenzie was named pitcher of the week a record five times, while Jenny Jackson became the only player to be named pitcher and player of the week for the same week. Smith went to WCU after spending one season as an assistant coach at North Carolina, her alma mater. She helped the Tar Heels with recruiting and fundraising and oversaw the academic progress of student-athletes, while participating in practice planning and game management. In 2004, Smith helped steer the Tar Heels to a 46-24 record, including a second-place finish in the Atlantic Coast Conference and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. In addition, she directed the Carolina Softball Camps. Before making the coaching move to UNC, Smith served as an assistant coach at Charlotte of Conference USA for the 2003 season. The 49ers recorded their most victories in five years that season as Smith worked with the infielders and pitchers, served as hitting coach and organized all recruiting efforts. Smith began her coaching career at Young Harris College in Georgia where she compiled a 79-41 record in two seasons as head coach of the Mountain Lions from 2001-02. Without an assistant, Smith was responsible for all aspects of the NJCAA Division I program.

COACHES AND STAFF

While at Young Harris, Smith’s teams collected two regional runner-up titles and was one game away from the National Tournament in 2001. During that two-year span, nearly every school record was broken, including wins in a season (45), team home runs, individual home runs, team strikeouts, team ERA, team batting average and team fielding percentage. In 2002, her players were nationally ranked for stolen bases, strikeouts and home runs. The squad was also ranked 11th nationally for team batting average (.361). Eight of her players were named to the all-region team.

The Jayhawk outfielders, as well as their offense, have gotten progressively stronger under his direction. In 2012, the Kansas lineup recorded a .288 batting average, which ranked fourth in the Big 12 and marked the secondbest average in program history. Additionally, the outfielders recorded just seven errors all season as the team posted a remarkable .970 fielding percentage. With his help in the outfield, junior outfielder Maggie Hull started all but two games in left field, while racking up a Big 12-best .409 batting average at the conclusion of the regular season, breaking a KU singleseason record that had stood for more than 30 years. During the 2011 season, Hull also led the team with a .346 average and 49 RBIs to earn All-Big 12 Second Team honors. As the hitting coach, Roorbach saw the Kansas lineup hit a program-best 60 homeruns in 2011 - nearly doubling the team’s home run total from the previous season. From his first season to his second at KU, the Jayhawks raised their team batting average by more than 40 points. Roorbach, who has spent five seasons as an assistant at the Division I level and four years as a head coach at the NAIA and junior college levels, joined the KU softball staff after working with Smith at LSU for two seasons as the director of softball operations and also served as Smith’s assistant at Western Carolina in 2006.

DYNAMIC DUO Head coach Megan Smith and assistant coach Adam Roorbach have served as a coaching tandem for seven seasons: one year at Western Carolina, two years at LSU and four seasons at Kansas.

OUTSTANDING OFFENSE The Jayhawk offense continues to strengthen under his direction. In 2012, the Kansas lineup recorded a .288 batting average, which ranked fourth in the Big 12 and marked the second-best average in program history. Additionally, the outfielders recorded just seven errors all season as the team posted a remarkable .970 fielding percentage.

While at LSU, Roorbach directed all aspects of game video and team travel, coordinated camps and clinics, and worked with the Tigers’ booster club. Prior to LSU, Roorbach spent the 2007 season as an assistant coach at Houston. There he helped the Cougars to their first Conference USA regular season and tournament championship in school history, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2004. After knocking off UL-Lafayette and Texas A&M, Houston advanced to the final day of competition at the College Station Regional before falling twice to the Aggies to end its season with a school record 44 wins. Roorbach spent the 2006 season as Smith’s assistant at Western Carolina during its inaugural season. That year, Western Carolina posted a 41-20 record and won the Southern Conference Championship. The Catamounts also ranked third nationally with 81 home runs and 12th in the NCAA with a .476 slugging percentage. Three WCU players were ranked nationally statistically and two were named to the NFCA All-Southeastern Region team. In 2005, Roorbach served as an assistant coach at Nicholls State. Working primarily with the Lady Colonel hitters and outfielders, Nicholls set a school record with 31 home runs and improved its team batting average by 29 points over the previous season.

Earning 2003 Mid-Central Conference Coach of the Year honors, Roorbach guided 14 Pilot players to All-Mid-Central Conference awards. Equally as impressive, all three of his teams were awarded the prestigious NFCA Top 10 Academic Team Award and 17 of his players were named NFCA Academic AllAmericans.

A native of Marion, Ind., Roorbach graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University in 1998 with a double major in business administration and sports management. While attending Indiana Wesleyan, he served as an assistant softball coach and also the school’s sports information director. He went on to earn his master’s degree in physical education from Eastern Illinois in 2000.

Abbie Sims enters her first season as an assistant coach at Kansas in 2013 after joining the Jayhawks as the pitching coach in June 2012. A five-year pitching coach at the University of Houston, Sims perfected her craft at the Conference USA perennial program, training the 2008 C-USA Pitcher of the Year in Angel Shamblin, the 2011 C-USA Newcomer of the Year in Donna Bourgeois and the 2011 NCAA leader in strikeouts per seven innings in Amanda Crabtree. Two seasons ago, Houston finished the 2011 campaign nationally ranked and only one win shy of a Women’s College World Series berth using a 1.35 team ERA - the best in the nation.

ASSISTANT COACH ABBIE SIMS FIRST SEASON

At Kansas, Sims will prepare and manage the Jayhawk pitching staff, lead the KU Softball pitching and catching camps as well as assist head coach Megan Smith and fellow assistant coach Adam Roorbach with recruiting. Sims, a former All-American pitcher at North Carolina State, will inherit a KU staff that recorded its lowest ERA (3.27) since 2009, led by the work of freshman Alicia Pille. The rookie from Royse City, Texas, recorded 17 wins in 2012, tying her for third-most among KU rookies and marked the most by a KU pitcher since 2008. Additionally, she turned in eight shutouts, led the Big 12 with four saves and ranked fifth in the league with 171 strikeouts at the conclusion of the regular season. The staff’s 294 total strikeouts also checked in at fifth in the conference prior to postseason play.

COACHES AND STAFF

In 2012, Sims helped Houston to its second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance with a 35-24 overall record using a staff comprised entirely of underclassmen. As a unit, the team posted a 2.92 ERA, led by redshirt sophomore Bailey Watts, who went 16-10 with a 2.51 ERA.

Sims rebuilt quickly following a 2011 campaign, in which the UH pitching staff dominated the opposition. Aside from the nation’s best 1.35 team ERA, Crabtree led the nation in strikeouts per game (12.0) and hits allowed (2.85) as she was named to the NFCA All-Region and the C-USA Second Teams and collected C-USA Pitcher of the Week honors six times in her final season. Crabtree broke UH’s single-game strikeout record when she fanned 17 at Memphis during the Cougars’ series win over the Tigers. Bourgeois was also recognized on Second Team by C-USA as the two seniors combined to throw four no hitters. Additionally, Diedre Outon was named to the All-Freshman Team.

DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS ALICIA SPACK SECOND SEASON

Alicia Spack became the program’s first director of operations at the beginning of the 2012 season. A standout player in college, Spack played at Florida before finishing the last three years of her collegiate career at Purdue. Her main responsibilities include maintaining the team’s social media and outreach efforts, organizing team travel, as well as shooting and breaking down video. The daughter of Illinois State head football coach Brock Spack, Alicia came to Kansas after a two-year stint working for the Purdue Athletics ticket office as the Director of Group Ticket Sales. Additionally, Spack began garnering experience in the Division I coaching world as the Purdue softball team’s game manager during the 2011 season. During that time, she also held an assistant coaching position with the local high school in West Lafayette, Ind. Spack spent her freshman year as a Florida Gator before transferring to Purdue to play her sophomore, junior and senior seasons. With the Gators, she hit .444 as a freshman and scored 20 runs before making the decision to transfer to Purdue. As a Boilermaker, Spack became a regular second baseman as a sophomore, knocking in the game-winning RBI four different times. As a junior, she displayed her abilities as a utility player, making starts in the infield, outfield and at designated player.

Spack earned Academic All-Big Ten accolades her senior season, again proving her abilities as a utility player. She finished her senior year with a flawless 1.000 fielding percentage, never missing a beat in 79 chances. She graduated from Purdue University with a degree in organizational leadership and supervision in 2009 and is currently working on a masters degree in sports management. She is planning to complete her graduate degree at Kansas in Dec. 2013.
