Spring Outlook Following a strong fall season in which the Kansas women’s golf team won the Marilynn Smith Invitational and tied for second at the Chip-N Club Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., the Jayhawks will look to continue their success this season. KU will travel to five different states to compete in six events including Arizona, Florida, Mississippi, Missouri and Texas.
Freshman Meghan Potee watches a drive at the Marilynn Smith Invitational.
Led by junior Katy Nugent, averaging 74.5 strokes per round, and senior Grace Thiry, 74.6 strokes per round, Kansas will start the season at Texas State University competing in the Claud Jacobs Challenge in Victoria, Texas Feb. 13 and 14. The Jayhawks will then travel to Weston, Fla., for the Louisville Cards Challenge Feb. 27-March 1. KU will also rely heavily on freshmen Megan Potee and Thanuttra Boonraksasat who both had great starts to their Jayhawk careers during the fall. Potee recorded the lowest round by a freshman in school history shooting a 69 in the second round at Price’s “Give ‘Em Five” in Las Cruces, N.M. Boonraksasat shot a career-best 70 at Price’s to finish the tournament in 34th place. After a three week break the Jayhawks will head southwest to Tucson, Ariz., for the Mountain View Challenge March 25 and 26. Meghna Bal tied for 43rd as a freshman at the 2008 Mountain View Challenge carding a 228. That was the last time the Jayhawks competed in the event. Kansas will then journey down to Mississippi for the Ole Miss Rebel Intercollegiate in University, Miss., April 1-3. The regular season will wrap for the Jayhawks at the Baylor Spring Invitational in Waco, Texas, April 11 and 12. “We are looking forward to getting the spring season under way as we are playing at some great venues against solid teams,” said head coach Erin O’Neil. “Our goal is to treat each tournament with equal importance and prepare as best we can so that we will be ready for postseason play in April and May.” Kansas will get its first postseason test at the Big 12 Championship in Bryan, Texas, April 22-24. The Jayhawks will compete against Nebraska and Colorado for the last time as those teams will join the Big Ten and newly renamed Pac-12 respectively in 2011-12. At last season’s Big 12 Championship the Jayhawks finished 12th Freshman Thanuttra Boonraksasat chips a shot onto the green at the Marilynn Smith Invitational. overall led by Emily Powers who fired a 231 and tied for 28th. Bal tied for 30th, shooting a 232, Boonraksasat will be a key to Kansas’ success this spring. and Thiry tied for 39th and carded a 235.

Erin O’Neil returns for her seventh season as head coach of the women’s golf team at the University of Kansas. O’Neil came to KU in 2004 after four seasons as an assistant at Auburn. In her first season as head coach, O'Neil led the Jayhawks to a first-place finish at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational, the program's first team title since 2000. Coach O'Neil's teams have also notched first-place finishes at the 2010 Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational, 2009 Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational, 2006 Mountain View Collegiate and the 2006 and 2007 Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitationals. Her five victories tie her for most in school history with former coach Brad Demo. Fall Season Recap Kansas enjoyed a fall season that set a good foundation for the spring as the Jayhawks competed well individually and as a team capturing one indvidual tournament title, a team tournament title and finishing in the top-10 of each event as a team. Seniors Meghna Bal and Grace Thiry overcame weather delays to tie for fourth place individually at the 2010 Chip-N Club Invitational. The Jayhawks tied for second place overall with Kansas State at 599 strokes on Sept. 13. KU finished just one stroke behind first place Arkansas State.
Junior Katy Nugent fires a drive at the 2010 Marilynn Smith Invitational.
Bal and Thiry each finished at four over par with two round scores of 148. Bal posted rounds of 72 and 76 while Thiry carded rounds of 75 and 73. The event was shortened to just two rounds after weather suspended play midway through round two on Sept. 13. Thiry continued her success when she claimed medalist honors as the Jayhawks hosted the Marilynn Smith Invitational Sept. 27 and 28. Teammate Katy Nugent finished as the individual runner-up as the duo led Kansas to the team title. The tournament took place at Alvamar Public Golf Course in Lawrence. Thiry posted three straight one-over par rounds of 73 while Nugent bounced back from an openinground 79 to fire a 69 and a 72 to finish one shot behind her teammate. Meghna Bal tied for sixth place as the Jayhawks produced three top-10 finishers for the first time since the 2009 Duramed Collegiate when four Jayhawks were in the top 10. The Marilynn Smith Invitational marked the first time the Jayhawks won a team title since claiming that Duramed Collegiate in 2009. Thiry’s individual championship was the first by a Jayhawk since that same tournament when Meghan Gockel claimed medalist honors. At the Johnie Imes Invitational in Columbia, Mo., Thiry tied for 27th and recorded the top finish for the Kansas women’s golf team for the third-straight event as the Jayhawks finished eighth overall Oct. 4-5. Thiry carded rounds of 74, 74 and 79 to finish with a combined score of 227. Nugent fired a final round of 72 to tie for 22nd and help the team to its fourth straight top-10 finish of the season as the Jayhawks placed ninth at the Price’s “Give ‘Em Five” Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M., Oct. 11-13. Redshirt freshman Thanuttra Boonraksasat also had a strong final round shooting a career-best 70 to tie for 35th. At the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate Nugent tied for fourth place individually to lead Kansas to a fourth-place team finish and close out the fall season on Oct. 26. Senior Grace Thiry watches a putt on her way to winning the 2010 Marilynn Smith Invitational.
Nugent shot rounds of 73-71-72 to finish with a an even-par 216 total. Her fourth-place finish made her the top finisher for the Jayhawks in two consecutive events.

Alvamar Golf Club
Alvamar opened for play on May 15, 1968, and included two original nines, Jayhawk and Quail Creek. The two courses were joined by the Hidden Valley nine in 1973 and The Sunflower in 1978. In 1982, the Hidden Valley and Sunflower nines were consolidated into Alvamar Country Club. Alvamar was named by developer Bob Billings from the contraction of his parents’ names, Alva and Margaretta Billings of Russell, Kan. The Alvamar Golf and Country Club encompass over 3,000 acres of West Lawrence. The 36 holes at Alvamar were designed by Mel Anderson and Bob Dunning and include a public and private clubhouse, driving range and three practice greens. The two courses at Alvamar were the first in the United States to utilize zoysia grass for its fairways and tees. The course currently uses cohansey bent green on both surfaces. In 1991, Alvamar Country Club hosted the Kansas Amateur. Alvamar Golf Club annually hosts the Kansas Open and has been the site of the United States Golf Association’s Women’s Public Links tournament. It was the site of the Big Eight Conference Men’s Championship for eight consecutive years. In 1990, the Big Eight Conference Women’s Championship was held at Alvamar and was won by the Jayhawks. Alvamar Golf Club hosted the inaugural Big 12 Women’s Championship in 1997 and is the site of the KU men’s Kansas Invitational and women’s Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational. Having been honored as one of the “best maintained golf courses in the United States” by Grounds Maintenance Magazine, Alvamar continues to improve its attractive golf venue. Alvamar's Director of Golf is former KU player and former women’s head coach, Brad Demo. Randy Towner serves as head professional at Alvamar Country Club. Alvamar Country Club is considered one of the finest golf courses in the state. Alvamar’s reputation is one of the reasons KU attracts some of the top golfers in the country.
The Knapheide Family Practice Facility at Alvamar
Last fall, construction was completed on the newest addition to the Kansas golf program's state-of-the-art facilities: the Knapheide Family Practice Facility. The new practice facility consists of four climate-controlled hitting bays with cutting-edge swing techonology. There are three smaller bays in addition to one larger bay, which is equipped with a V1 video swing analysis system and a Trackman radar launch monitoring system. "We are incredibly excited about our new hitting facility," said head coach Erin O'Neil. "It will allow us to hit shots and work on our putting under realistic conditions during January and February." Armed with this valuable new facility, the KU golf team looks to have a productive winter in preparation for the spring season and beyond. "It will have a positive impact on our players’ confidence levels, especially for the first couple of tournaments in the spring," said O'Neil.

Chancellor Gray-Little previously was executive vice chancellor and provost from 2006 to 2009 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A professor of psychology, Gray-Little rose to the post of UNC’s chief academic officer after successive administrative appointments, including dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, executive associate provost, senior associate dean for undergraduate education for the college, and chair of the Department of Psychology. In these roles, she earned a reputation as a superb fundraiser, a relationship builder, a strong advocate for faculty and for research, and a champion for the highest quality educational experience for students. A native of eastern North Carolina, Gray-Little received her bachelor’s degree from Marywood College in Scranton, Pa., and her master’s and doctoral
degrees in psychology from St. Louis University. Her postdoctoral research in cross-cultural psychology was funded by a fellowship from the Fulbright Foundation for study in Denmark. She has also been a Social Science Research Council Fellow and a recipient of a Ford Foundation Senior Scholar Fellowship through the National Research Council. Her research falls primarily into three areas, two of which reflect a continuing interest in the relation of social and cultural factors to personality and psychopathology. First, she has studied the relevance of the client and clinician’s ethnic/racial membership to the diagnosis and treatment of psychological disorder. The second area concerns the social determinants of self-esteem and is manifest in research on factors associated with self-esteem in children and adolescents of varied ethnic groups. In a third area of research she has explored the association of relationship satisfaction to the decision-making and influence strategies used by couples in intimate relationships. Gray-Little is married to Shade Key Little, who was assistant dean for academic support services at UNC. They have two adult children and one grandchild.
Director of Athletics Sheahon Zenger Director of Athletics Dr. Sheahon (SHAY-un) Zenger is a coach at heart. But when KU Chancellor Bernadette GrayLittle introduced the Hays, Kan., native as KU’s Athletics Director January 3, 2011, he promised not to call any plays for the coaches. That doesn’t mean, though, that he won’t be right there with them – and their student-athletes – every step of the way. For it’s his genuine care for coaches and student-athletes that has stamped his career in intercollegiate athletics. Zenger comes to KU after serving for five years as athletics director at Illinois State University, helping steer ISU Athletics to a place of prominence in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Redbirds won a conference-leading seven league titles during the 2009-10 season and captured their second Valley All-Sports Trophy in three years. ISU’s Weisbecker Scholarship Fund membership grew 65 percent during his tenure, and capital projects boomed. The Illinois State Baseball Stadium at Duffy Bass Field was officially dedicated in May 2009 to culminate the completion of that $3.5 million project. In addition, funding for the Redbird Arena locker room improvements has also been secured. With experience as an educator, coach, fundraiser and administrator, Zenger brought a plan to Illinois State, and with the help of the head coaches and administrative staff, personalized that strategic plan for Redbird Athletics. As a result, the athletics department saw record-high gradepoint averages (GPA) in each of the last four years, including a best-ever department-wide 3.13 GPA in fall 2009. Redbird student-athletes now regularly carry a GPA of 3.0 or better. ISU student-athletes have also contributed more than 2,000 hours of community service in each of the last five years, including 3,500 hours during the 2009-10 athletic season. In addition to Valley All-Sports titles in 2008 and 2010, in his last three years at ISU Zenger led the department to 16 top-five finishes in its 17 Valley sports – the highest percentage of top-five finishers in league history. Zenger secured a five-year apparel contract for Redbird Athletics, and significantly increased the marketing of the program in the Central Illinois region, most notably with a campaign centered on the award-winning marketing campaign “Spread the Red.” He also witnessed record-setting attendance figures in football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball, while seeing 17 Redbird teams advance to postseason play. At the beginning, Zenger wasn’t headed toward a career in administration. He was nine years old when he told his father he wanted to be a coach, and it didn’t take long for that dream to materialize. After playing football at Fort Hays State and Mid-American Nazarene College, he finished his undergraduate degree at Kansas State. Even before he received his bachelor’s degree in English and secondary education in 1988, Zenger was assisting the football coaches at Manhattan (Kan.) High School. His first college football coaching job came at Drake University right after graduation. In 1989, at age 23, Zenger joined Bill Snyder’s staff at Kansas State as one of the nation’s youngest full-time football staff members; he served in key roles as assistant recruiting coordinator and director of football operations. Zenger completed his master’s degree in journalism and mass communication in 1992 while helping Snyder bring Wildcat football to unprecedented success. It became evident, though, that more than coaching was in store for Zenger. He sought advice from then-KU Chancellor Gene Budig, who convinced him to pursue a Ph.D. at KU. As he completed his Ph.D. in educational policy and leadership (1996), Zenger contributed communications and special projects support to the office of the executive vice-chancellor, Ed Meyen, and wrote the professional life history of then-chancellor Del Shankel, while strengthening his understanding of university leadership at the highest levels. While focusing his attention on academics, he managed to stay involved in the world of intercollegiate athletics, and specifically football. ‘Involved’ may be an understatement. In 1993 Zenger and a friend founded American Football Quarterly, a magazine for coaches. Zenger served as publisher – and then editor – until 1995, when he sold his share of the by-then-thriving magazine. Still, coaching stayed in his blood. After earning his doctorate, Zenger in 1996 signed on as the recruiting coordinator for the brand-new NCAA Division I football program at the University of South Florida. A year later he joined the University of Wyoming football staff as recruiting coordinator and within two years rose to assistant head coach, a position he still considers one of the crowning achievements of his career. Zenger stayed at Wyoming through the 2000 season before returning to Kansas State. He spent a year in the KSU College of Business, raising more than $2 million and restructuring its development program with research and planning. He rejoined KSU Athletics in 2001 as assistant athletics director for major gifts, helping KSU initiate important development strategies. In 2002 he was appointed KSU’s associate athletics director for development, a position he held until 2005, when he was named Athletics Director at Illinois State. A published author and researcher, Zenger served for three years on the NCAA Division I Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement. He also served on two NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Division committees, and was a member of the Executive Committee of NACDA’s Division I FCS Athletic Directors Association. He is also a member of many professional and university organizations, including the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), the Association for the Study of Higher Education and the American Football Coaches Association. Zenger is married to the former Pam McAnarney. The couple has three children: Luke (14), Abby (12) and Jake (10).

Since it began play in 1996-97, the Conference can boast 31 team crowns and over 385 individual NCAA Championships. The success continued during 2007-08 as Kansas captured the Big 12’s first national title in men’s basketball, while the league added 31 individual crowns. Over the past four seasons a total of 12 NCAA trophies have been hoisted by Big 12 institutions, with at least one national crown won in all but one year for the Conference, including each of the past 11 seasons. The Big 12 leads all conferences with five appearances in Bowl Championship Series title games. League squads have played for the football national championship five times in the last nine years with berths in 14 BCS games overall, including two in 2007. The Big 12 led all conferences with four teams ranked in the Top 10 in the final national polls a season ago. In addition, an all-time high eight league players earned consensus All-America recognition in 2007, more than any other conference. In basketball, nine men’s and women’s teams have advanced to their respective Final Fours in the past seven seasons as the Big 12 continues its place among the elite intercollegiate athletic conferences. The six men’s Final Four participants since 2002 is more than any conference. Numerous national honors have been won by basketball student-athletes during the league’s history, with Michael Beasley (Kansas State), D.J. Augustin (Texas) and Courtney Paris (Oklahoma) the most recent to garner accolades as consensus All-America in 2007-08. The Big 12 and its member institutions are committed to a competitive environment where sportsmanship and fair play take center stage. Whether on the field, in the classroom, or within the community the student-athletes, administrators, coaches and game officials of the Big 12 support the highest ideals in sportsmanship. Big 12 student-athletes also do well in garnering national academic recognition. Sarah Pavan (Nebraska) was named Academic All-America of the Year in volleyball the past two seasons by ESPN The Magazine and College Sports Information Directors of America with a 4.0 gradepoint average in Biochemistry. She also won the national academic honor presented for all sports in 2006-07 and was named recipient of the prestigious 2006-07 Honda-Broderick Award as Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year. She is the first athlete since the Big 12 was formed to earn the accolade. In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Augustin was an Academic All-America First Team choice. In its history, the conference can boast of over 300 academic honorees, averaging more than 25 each season. The Big 12 can boast of other stories that combine on and off the field success. Patience Knight (Texas Tech) was the recipient of the Honda Inspiration Award in 2008, given to an outstanding female college athlete who overcomes adversity to excel in her sport. She was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in 2007, but rebounded to win All-America honors at the 2008 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Competitive excellence, scholarship and sportsmanship are all equal components of the Big 12 philosophy. All-Big 12 teams and Academic AllBig 12 squads are recognized for each sport at the end of their respective seasons. At the end of each academic year, the Conference honors its top male and female student-athletes with the Big 12 Athlete of the Year and Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year awards. Institutions can also nominate student-athletes for the prestigious Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarships at the end of each academic year. A total of 201 scholars have received over $1.2 million in postgraduate financial aid through the first 12 years of the program. The Big 12 sponsors 21 sports. Men’s squads include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and wrestling. Women’s teams are fielded in basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball. The conference is made up of 12 institutions that have shared many traditional rivalries throughout their histories. Member schools include Baylor University, University of Colorado, Iowa State University, University of Kansas, Kansas State University, University of Missouri, University of Nebraska, University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University, University of Texas, Texas A&M University and Texas Tech University. The institutions created a league that encompasses seven states, over 45 million people and television households in 18 of the top 100 markets within its geographic footprint. The conference conducts championships for 20 of its 21 sports. Each championship helps to determine teams and/or individuals that will represent the Conference in national postseason competition. The winner of the Big 12 football championship game earns the league’s berth into the prestigious Bowl Championship Series. In the last several years the Big 12 has increased its bowl agreements and expanded television opportunities for all sports through contracts with ABC/ESPN, FSN and CBS College Sports. Most recently, the league renewed and expanded its multi-year arrangement with ABC/ESPN, Inc. The new contract begins in 2008-09. In its first 12 years, the Conference has distributed more than $1 billion to its 12 member institutions. The Big 12 staff administers to over 4,600 student-athletes in 21 sports.
