FALL 2012 RECAP

Back-to-back tournament titles and four top-10 finishes highlighted what was a solid fall 2012 for the Kansas women’s golf team. The Jayhawks concluded their 2012 fall season on a high note after finishing seventh at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate Oct. 28-29. Junior Thanuttra “Fhong” Boonraksasat led KU, shooting a three-round total score of 219 (+3), to tie for fifth individually. Kansas began the season by placing 11th at the Dale McNamara Invitational in Tulsa, Okla., Sept. 17-18. Boonraksasat led the Jayhawks with a 54-hole total of 223 (75-7376) and tied for 24th, while junior Meghan Potee was three strokes behind with a 226 (75-75-76; t-30th ), which tied for her third-lowest 54-hole score as a Jayhawk.

scores of 307 and 296, and concluded with a 299 in the final round to finish seventh. “We showed much improvement this fall and I am proud of what we have accomplished so far,” O’Neil said. “The team will need to continue to work hard in the off season so that we can come back even stronger this spring.” Head coach Erin O’Neil thought the final tournament was reflective of how the team played during the fall season. Looking to carry its momentum from four top-10 finishes into the spring 2013 season, Kansas is back in action Feb. 15-17 at the FSU Match Up Invitational in Tallahassee, Fla.

A week later, Kansas hosted the eighth-annual Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational, claiming its first team title of the 2012-13 season with a three-round total score of 906 (+42). Boonraksasat, sophomore Gabby DiMarco and freshman Yupaporn Kawinpakorn all finished in the top seven. Boonraksasat led the Jayhawks again placing second individually, shooting an even-par 72 in her final two rounds and a three-round 221 (+5). The Jayhawks competed next in the Price’s “Give Em’ Five” Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M., Oct. 8-10, where Kawinpakorn claimed her first medalist honors at the college level and Kansas won its second-consecutive tournament, a first for the program since the fall 1988 season. Kansas shot a three-round school-record 871 (+7), while Kawinpakorn led the Jayhawks with a 54-hole total of 213 (69-71-73). Kansas had less than a week to prepare for its next tournament before traveling to Norman, Okla., to compete in the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic at the Jimmy Austin OU Golf Club Oct. 15-17. Potee was the team’s top finisher for the second year in a row in Norman, carding a final round 74 to finish tied for 24th and helped the team to a ninth-place finish. Kawinpakorn and DiMarco also finished strong shooting within three strokes of each other for a three-round total scores of 227 (+11) and 228 (+12), respectively. The Jayhawks wrapped up their 2012 fall season two weeks later at the Edwin Watts/ Palmetto Intercollegiate in Kiawah, S.C., Oct 28-29. Boonraksasat was in eighth after the second round was suspended due to darkness, but moved up the leaderboard to close the tournament tying for fifth. The Jayhawks notched first- and second-round

Freshman Yupaporn Kawinpakorn took medalist honors at the New Mexico State Invitational in her third ever college tournament.

2013 SPRING PREVIEW Q&A WITH ERIN O’NEIL Coming off one of the best Falls in Kansas women’s golf history, how has that success carried over to the team heading into the spring? EO: “I think it is a good confidence builder. There is definitely some good momentum. They (KU women’s golf team) are very excited to get started this spring. They have been working hard, getting out and getting lots of extra work in on their own, which is good. I think they are really excited to keep going and see what they can accomplish this season.” Kansas showed balanced competition in the fall as its top five players were within three strokes of each other in scoring average from 74.4 to 77.1. Does this make the competition in practice just that much tougher? EO: “It has definitely been more competitive and intense in practice and in qualifying. It has pushed all the girls to work harder, which I think is always a good thing to have that kind of competition within the squad. It helps push everyone to keep getting better.” You used the same lineup in all five events last fall. Do you expect that to change or do you like the consistency? EO: “I would like to have some of the other girls pushing to be in that lineup. It helps because, when some people get comfortable, they tend to not work as hard. I think it will help everybody stay on their ‘A Game’ if everyone is getting pushed. I think some of the girls from the fall who didn’t travel have worked over the break, and I have seen improvement in our qualifying recently. We added another transfer (sophomore Minami Levonowich) player in at midyear. I am hoping that we’ll see some changes. I just want to see everyone pushing each other.” You have one senior, two juniors, four sophomores and two freshmen. Who are the leaders on this team? How do they lead? EO: “We have our captains, Fhong (Thanuttra Boonraksasat) and Audrey (Yowell). Outside of that, I think everybody leads in their own way. Meghan (Potee) is probably our other leader; she steps up quite a bit for us. She is involved in SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee) and other things like that. Those are probably our three main leaders. Meghan

is definitely more of our vocal leader; she will call you out if you are not doing what you are supposed to be doing. Audrey is kind of a mixture. She does a lot by example but she is kind of the big sister. Yowell is the second oldest of seven kids so she is used to being the big sister. She will speak up but in a pretty nice way that gets their (other golfers) attention. Fong is more of a leader by example. She rarely has a bad day. She is always happy and has a good effect on chemistry by helping everyone get along. Fhong also shoots good scores, so I think that is her way of leading by example.” Mook (Yupaporn Kawainpakorn) won a tournament and Fhong (Thanuttra Boonraksasat) was your leading scorer. How have they adjusted to playing golf in the U.S.? EO: “They have obviously done a good job of it as they are our two lowest in stroke averages. Fhong is a little celebrity around here and her scores have been improving. Mook has come in and played really well right out of the gate. I am proud of both of them because it is not an easy thing to come over here, adjust to a different culture, a different style of golf and team golf. They have done a very good job.”

With golf being such an individual sport, how do you set individual goals? EO: “We do it per player. We have a statistical service called GolfStat that we send in the golfers’ stats after every tournament. It measures their fairway percentage, the greens that they hit, putts, up and downs, everything so we evaluate all of those for each player and talk to them about ways to improve certain stats that need to come up. We set our goals based on that and then we have our team goals.” With the success of the fall, what are the team goals for this spring? EO: “They want to maintain what they started in the fall. Their goal was to give 120 percent every day, to have no excuses, to take 10 seconds before responding or reacting to something. It is those type of goals that everybody, whether they are travelling or not, can be a part of. It seems to have worked real well in the fall. Obviously make good grades, too. They want to have a 3.5 GPA, which we almost did in the fall (3.45). I think ultimately their goal is to make the postseason and to do that, they need to take it one day at a time and give it their best today.”

Besides the five who played last fall, who else is vying for playing time? EO: “Michelle Woods is right there. Minami (Levonowich) is starting to play better. I think she was a little overwhelmed coming in at mid-semester and adjusting to that change. I’ve seen her scores get progressively better so far. Mackenzie (Thayer) is getting better but she still has a little bit of work to do. It is probably Michelle and Minami that are pretty close to breaking through.” How will this spring schedule prepare you for the Big 12 and NCAA Championships? EO: “It (the Florida State tournament) is a really good field. It is a different format than we normally play. We are going to be teamed up with another team. It is going to be more of a team aspect rather than individual. We will be paired up with Furman. The Furman coach (Kelley Hester) is one of my best friends; I’ve known her since I was 15 and she was my teammate at Georgia.”

ATHLETICS DIRECTOR SHEAHON ZENGER ATHLETICS DIRECTOR

AB O U T ZE N GER Birthplace Hays, Kansas Wife Pam Zenger Children Luke, Abby, Jake Education Kansas State, 1988 Kansas State Master’s in Journalism and Mass Communications (1992) Kansas Ph D. Education Policy and Leadership(1970) Administrative Experience 2001-05 Associate Athletic Director Kansas State 2005-11 Director of Athletics Illinois State 2011-present Director of Athletics Kansas Coaching Experience 1987 Manhattan HS (Football Head Coach)

Dr. Sheahon (SHAY-un) Zenger is a coach at heart. But when KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little introduced the Hays, Kan., native as KU’s Athletics Director January 3, 2011, he promised not to call any plays for the coaches. That doesn’t mean, though, that he won’t be right there with them - and their student-athletes - every step of the way. For it’s his genuine care for coaches and student-athletes that has stamped his career in intercollegiate athletics. Zenger comes to KU after serving for five years as athletics director at Illinois State University, helping steer ISU Athletics to a place of prominence in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Redbirds won a conference-leading seven league titles during the 2009-10 season and captured their second Valley All-Sports Trophy in three years. ISU’s Weisbecker Scholarship Fund membership grew 65 percent during his tenure, and capital projects boomed. The Illinois State Baseball Stadium at Duffy Bass Field was officially dedicated in May 2009 to culminate the completion of that $3.5 million project. In addition, funding for the Redbird Arena locker room improvements has also been secured.

While focusing his attention on academics, he managed to stay involved in the world of intercollegiate athletics, and specifically football. ‘Involved’ may be an understatement. In 1993 Zenger and a friend founded American Football Quarterly, a magazine for coaches. Zenger served as publisher - and then editor - until 1995, when he sold his share of the by-then-thriving magazine.

With experience as an educator, coach, fundraiser and administrator, Zenger brought a plan to Illinois State, and with the help of the head coaches and administrative staff, personalized that strategic plan for Redbird Athletics. As a result, the athletics department saw record-high gradepoint averages (GPA) in each of the last four years, including a best-ever department-wide 3.13 GPA in fall 2009. Redbird student-athletes now regularly carry a GPA of 3.0 or better. ISU student-athletes have also contributed more than 2,000 hours of community service in each of the last five years, including 3,500 hours during the 2009-10 athletic season.

Still, coaching stayed in his blood. After earning his doctorate, Zenger in 1996 signed on as the recruiting coordinator for the brand-new NCAA Division I football program at the University of South Florida. A year later he joined the University of Wyoming football staff as recruiting coordinator and within two years rose to assistant head coach, a position he still considers one of the crowning achievements of his career.

In addition to Valley All-Sports titles in 2008 and 2010, in his last three years at ISU Zenger led the department to 16 top-five finishes in its 17 Valley sports - the highest percentage of topfive finishers in league history.

Zenger secured a five-year apparel contract for Redbird Athletics, and significantly increased the marketing of the 1989-92 program in the Central Illinois region, most notably with a Kansas State campaign centered on the award-winning marketing campaign (Dir. of Football Operations) “Spread the Red.” He also witnessed record-setting attendance figures in football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball, 1993-95 American Football Quarterly (Editor) while seeing 17 Redbird teams advance to postseason play.

1997 Wyoming

(Football Recruiting Coordinator) 1998-2000 Wyoming (Assistant Head Coach)

In 1989, at age 23, Zenger joined Bill Snyder’s staff at Kansas State as one of the nation’s youngest full-time football staff members; he served in key roles as assistant recruiting coordinator and director of football operations. Zenger completed his master’s degree in journalism and mass communication in 1992 while helping Snyder bring Wildcat football to unprecedented success. It became evident, though, that more than coaching was in store for Zenger. He sought advice from then-KU Chancellor Gene Budig, who convinced him to pursue a Ph.D. at KU. As he completed his Ph.D. in educational policy and leadership (1996), Zenger contributed communications and special projects support to the office of the executive vice-chancellor, Ed Meyen, and wrote the professional life history of then-chancellor Del Shankel, while strengthening his understanding of university leadership at the highest levels.

degree at Kansas State. Even before he received his bachelor’s degree in English and secondary education in 1988, Zenger was assisting the football coaches at Manhattan (Kan.) High School. His first college football coaching job came at Drake University right after graduation.

At the beginning, Zenger wasn’t headed toward a career in administration. He was nine years old when he told his father he wanted to be a coach, and it didn’t take long for that dream to materialize. After playing football at Fort Hays State and Mid-American Nazarene College, he finished his undergraduate

Zenger stayed at Wyoming through the 2000 season before returning to Kansas State. He spent a year in the KSU College of Business, raising more than $2 million and restructuring its development program with research and planning. He rejoined KSU Athletics in 2001 as assistant athletics director for major gifts, helping KSU initiate important development strategies. In 2002 he was appointed KSU’s associate athletics director for development, a position he held until 2005, when he was named Athletics Director at Illinois State. A published author and researcher, Zenger served for three years on the NCAA Division I Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement. He also served on two NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Division committees, and was a member of the Executive Committee of NACDA’s Division I FCS Athletic Directors Association. He is also a member of many professional and university organizations, including the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), the Association for the Study of Higher Education and the American Football Coaches Association. Zenger is married to the former Pam McAnarney. The couple has three children: Luke (16), Abby (14) and Jake (12).

Individually, Nugent posted a career-low 68 in the final round of the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational, while Potee recorded a career-low 54 of 217 at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate. “The spring was a bit of a roller coaster ride for us,” head coach Erin O’Neil said. “We had a win at Rio Verde, which was a great confidence boost for the team; however, we didn’t finish up as strong as we would have liked during the Big 12 Championship. Our goal when we wrapped up last April was to evaluate what worked well and what needed to be changed within our practices, within each player’s mental and physical work ethic, within our tournament strategies and within the team chemistry. It was very important for the players to show their competitors and KU supporters that they have the ability to perform at a high level and to make a positive impact on the program overall.” Kansas concluded its season April 27-29 at the Big 12 Championship in Lawrence, Kan. The Jayhawks finished 10th with a three-round total score of 951 (338-307-306).

Katy Nugent was an Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection in 2011-12.

ALVAMAR GOLF CLUB ALVAMAR GOLF CLUB Alvamar opened for play on May 15, 1968, and included two original nines, Jayhawk and Quail Creek. The two courses were joined by the Hidden Valley nine in 1973 and The Sunflower in 1978. In 1982, the Hidden Valley and Sunflower nines were consolidated into Alvamar Country Club. Alvamar was named by developer Bob Billings from the contraction of his parents’ names, Alva and Margaretta Billings of Russell, Kan. The Alvamar Golf and Country Club encompass over 3,000 acres of West Lawrence. The 36 holes at Alvamar were designed by Mel Anderson and Bob Dunning and include a public and private clubhouse, driving range and three practice greens. The two courses at Alvamar were the first in the United States to utilize zoysia grass for its fairways and tees. The course currently uses cohansey bent green on both surfaces. In 1991, Alvamar Country Club hosted the Kansas Amateur. Alvamar Golf Club annually hosts the Kansas Open and has been the site of the United States Golf Association’s Women’s Public Links tournament. It was the site of the Big Eight Conference Men’s Championship for eight consecutive years. In 1990, the Big Eight Conference Women’s Championship was held at Alvamar and was won by the Jayhawks. Alvamar Golf Club hosted the inaugural Big 12 Women’s Championship in 1997 and is the site of the KU men’s Kansas Invitational and women’s Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational. Having been honored as one of the “best maintained golf courses in the United States” by Grounds Maintenance Magazine, Alvamar continues to improve its attractive golf venue. David Dunn serves as head professional at Alvamar Country Club. Alvamar Country Club is considered one of the finest golf courses in the state. Alvamar’s reputation is one of the reasons KU attracts some of the top golfers in the country.

THE KNAPHEIDE FAMILY PRACTICE FACILITY AT ALVAMAR In the fall of 2009, construction was completed on the newest addition to the Kansas golf program's state-of-the-art facilities: the Knapheide Family Practice Facility. The practice facility consists of four climate-controlled hitting bays with cutting-edge swing techonology. There are three smaller bays in addition to one larger bay, which is equipped with a V1 video swing analysis system and a Trackman radar launch monitoring system. "We are incredibly excited about our hitting facility," said head coach Erin O'Neil. "It allows us to hit shots and work on our putting under realistic conditions during January and February." Armed with this valuable facility, the KU golf team looks to have a productive winter in preparation for the spring season and beyond. "It will have a positive impact on our players’ confidence levels, especially for the first couple of tournaments in the spring," said O'Neil.

UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS / KU TRADITIONS

THE ROCK CHALK CHANT The Rock Chalk Chant has been the battle cry of KU fans for more than 90 years. This strange, traditional chant, which is among the most famous of all college cheers, was started by E.H.S. Bailey, a professor of chemistry. Bailey wanted a cheer for his Science Club. Returning from a convention in Wichita, Bailey and some associates patterned a yell after the rhythmic cadence of their train rolling along the tracks. On May 21, 1886, Bailey submitted the cheer to his club. Before the University adopted the cheer in 1897, it consisted of “Rah, Rah, Jayhawk, KU” being repeated three times. An English professor soon suggested that “Rock Chalk” be substituted for “Rah, Rah” because it rhymed with Jayhawk. “Rock Chalk” was also symbolic of the chalky limestone formations found on Mount Oread. Teddy Roosevelt once said the Rock Chalk chant was the best he had ever heard.

THE FIGHT SONG George “Dumpy” Bowles, a student with the class of 1912, longed to make a great contribution to the KU spirit, but wasn’t athletic enough to do historic deeds on the athletic field. He turned to music and produced some outstanding student musical shows. A song in one of these shows was “I’m a Jayhawk.” Written in 1912, it was dormant until 1920 when a growth in school spirit brought out “I’m a Jayhawk” once more. The song contributed to the raising of funds to build both the KU football stadium and student union as World War I memorials. The 1926 glee club made it known nationally. During homecoming week in 2010, the KU Alumni Association held a public contest to reword portions of the song because of the impending departure of Nebraska and Colorado from the Big 12 Conference. Matt Schoenfield of Countryside, Kan., won the contest. The fight song now mentions all 10 of the current Big 12 schools in its lyrics.

THE ALMA MATER In 1891, professor George Barlow Penny searched for a school song for the Glee and Mandolin Club to sing on its tour through Kansas to Denver and back. No one responded with an original song in answer to his appeals. Just before departure, he thought of the Cornell song “Far Above Cayuga’s Waters.” Hastily changing a few words, he gave it to the glee club men to sing on the trip. He did not expect the song to be used after their return, but “Crimson and the Blue” still goes on. The music is not Cornell’s but an old English folk tune, “Annie Lisle.”

UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS / KU TRADITIONS WAVING THE WHEAT Since the early days of KU sports, it has been a ritual of Jayhawk fans to “wave the wheat” following every Kansas scoring drive. The ritual consists of fans waving their arms in the air, an activity which, when done by a large crowd, resembles a breezy Kansas wheat field.

THE NICKNAME During the Civil War a regiment raised by Kansas Governor Charles Robinson called itself the “Independent Mounted Jayhawks” (later officially the First Kansas Calvary and then the Seventh Kansas Regiment). By the end of the Civil War the word Jayhawk was associated with the spirit of camaraderie and the courageous fighting qualities that characterized efforts to keep Kansas a free state. By 1886, the University of Kansas had adopted the mythical bird as part of the KU yell. When the university’s football team first took the field in 1890, it seemed only natural that they should be called Jayhawkers. Few colleges and universities have such a meaningful symbol, one so deeply associated with the struggles of the people who founded them.

THE SCHOOL COLORS The University of Kansas colors, crimson and blue, used since the early 1890s, are not the colors originally adopted by the university Board of Regents in the 1860s. The Regents had decided to adopt the Michigan colors, maize and sky blue. Maize and blue were used at early oratorical meets, and they may have been used when Kansas competed in rowing in the middle 1880s. However, when football came upon the scene in 1890, the student backers wanted to use Harvard crimson as the athletic color in honor of Col. John J. McCook, a Harvard man who had given money to KU for an athletic field. The field ran east and west in the proximity of where the north bowl of Memorial Stadium currently sits on the Kansas campus. Until that time, Kansas football games were played at Central Park on Massachusetts Street in downtown Lawrence. Some Yale men were on the faculty, and they demanded the Yale blue be included. The rooters rallied forth to allow crimson and blue on their team. No one fought to retain the original colors, and the vivid deeper tone crimson and blue became generally used. Finally, in May 1896, the KU Athletic Board adopted crimson and blue as the official team colors for the university.

CAMPANILE HILL Campanile Hill forms the picturesque backdrop for Memorial Stadium. On a sunny fall Saturday, the “Hill” is transformed into a congregating place for watching Jayhawk football, sunning and barbequing. Potter Lake, just to the southeast of Memorial Stadium and at the bottom of Campanile Hill, adds to the beauty of the Kansas campus.
