Studio Other Spaces (SOS) wurde 2014 vom Künstler Olafur Eliasson und dem Architekten Sebastian Behmann in Berlin gegründet. Für Eliasson, dessen großformatige Kunstwerke und Installationen in Museen und im öffentlichen Raum international bekannt sind, ist die Ausdehnung in die Architektur eine nur logische Weiterentwicklung. Behmann, der nach seinem Architekturstudium in Dresden seit 2001 mit Eliasson arbeitet, war bei verschiedenen Großprojekten wie der Fassadengestaltung von Harpa Reykjavik Concert Hall and Conference Centre (2005 – 2011), Your rainbow panorama für das ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum (2011), dem Serpentine Gallery Pavilion (2007) in London (mit Kjetil Thorsen), sowie The blind pavilion, als Teil des dänischen Pavillons in der 50. Biennale di Venezia (2003) maßgeblich beteiligt.

Im Studio Other Spaces erforschen nun der Künstler und der Architekt in experimenteller Herangehensweise neue Methoden zur Gestaltung von Räumen, um die Grenzen von Architektur und Kunst auszuloten. Mittlerweile besteht das Team von Studio Other Spaces aus 10 Mitarbeiter*innen, die sich nicht nur der Entwicklung und Planung, sondern ebenso der Recherche und der Archivierung widmen.

Materialrecherche, Klimaanalysen, Kochworkshops, Naturbeobachtung und Lichtexperimente sind ebenso Teil der Praxis von Studio Other Spaces wie der Modellbau und das Entwerfen von Räumen in der virtuellen Realität.

Bei KUNST MERAN MERANO ARTE zeigt Studio Other Spaces in der ersten institutionellen Einzelausstellung einen Rundgang durch die Themen und Schwerpunkte des Büros.

Besucher*innen werden virtuell durch von SOS gestaltete Räume und Orte geführt, die Modelle und handfeste Prototypen zeigen, wie etwa einen Prototyp des Grills aus dem Restaurant Lyst, der auf der Terrasse des Kunsthauses auch tatsächlich

Olafur Eliasson: SOS entstand aus einer Kollaboration, denn Sebastian und ich arbeiten schon seit über 20 Jahren an Installationen, Ausstellungen und anderen kreativen, räumlichen Projekten für mein Studio zusammen. Ich bin schon immer an den Bereichen interessiert, in denen sich Kunst und Architektur überschneiden – und diese Überschneidung ist genau das, was uns dazu brachte, SOS als Architekturbüro zu gründen. Hier können wir mit einer integrierten Herangehensweise beide Perspektiven zusammenbringen.

Räumliche Projekte, die sich einem breiten Spektrum anderer Disziplinen und Ausdrucksformen öffnen und sie einbinden – etwa der Philosophie, den Sozial- und Naturwissenschaften, aber auch gesellschaftlichem Engagement oder Soundelementen – bergen ein großes Potenzial.

Sebastian Behmann: Es ist genau diese Offenheit gegenüber anderen Disziplinen, welche unsere Projekte auszeichnet. Unsere Erfahrungen, die wir bei der Entwicklung großer Kunstwerke sammeln konnten – zum Beispiel bei den Fassaden des Konzerthauses und Konferenzzentrums Harpa in Reykjavik, bei Your rainbow panorama in Aarhus oder Cirkelbroen (2015) in Kopenhagen –, sind sehr wertvoll für unsere Arbeit an größeren Projekten und Gebäuden bei SOS. Studio Other Spaces greift unsere Erfahrungen aus der Kunst – im Umgang mit Materialien und Entwicklungsprozessen – auf und überträgt sie auf die architektonische Praxis. Uns ist es wichtig, dass sich Kunst und Architektur in den Projekten parallel entwickeln und gegenseitig inspirieren.

Ihr habt zahlreiche Installationen, architektonische Arbeiten und internationale Ausstellungen entwickelt und realisiert und widmet euch gleichermaßen der Recherche und dem Experiment. Wie kam es zum Entschluss, Studio Other Spaces (SOS) zu gründen?

in Betrieb genommen werden kann, oder das in Südtirol produzierte hängende Modell im Atrium. Im Zentrum stehen dabei vor allem zwei ihrer kürzlich realisierten Projekte: der Meles Zenawi Memorial Park in Addis Abeba, Äthiopien (2013 – 2020) und das Design des Restaurant Lyst (2019) im Fjordenhus in Vejle, Dänemark. Das ikonische Fjordenhus wurde von 2009 bis 2018 ebenfalls von Olafur Eliasson und Sebastian Behmann gebaut und hatte zur Gründung von SOS beigetragen.

Seit der Gründung hat KUNST MERAN MERANO ARTE neben dem künstlerischen Programm einen Schwerpunkt auf die zeitgenössische Architektur gelegt. Mit Gianni Pettena, Mitbegründer der italienischen Architetture Radicale (wie Superstudio, Archizoom, Ufo), ausgebildeter Architekt und langjähriger Professor für Architekturgeschichte, der sich in seiner Produktion jedoch hauptsächlich auf die Kunst konzentriert, aber auch mit Alterazioni Video, dem Künstlerkollektiv, das mit Incompiuto die unvollendeten Betonbauten Italiens zu einem neuen (nicht nur architektonischen) Stil ausruft, wurden in den letzten Jahren in Meran auch immer wieder Positionen gezeigt, die sich bewusst zwischen Kunst und Architektur bewegen und mit ihren Visionen andere Sicht- und Herangehensweisen an die Architektur versuchen.

Wir beginnen jedes Projekt damit, bestehende Parameter und die Umgebung zu analysieren, und versuchen zu verstehen, wie wir uns einbringen können, um das volle Potenzial im Rahmen dieses Kontextes auszuschöpfen. Um unseren Ideen Form zu geben, bedienen wir uns im nächsten Schritt unterschiedlicher Medien – Zeichnungen, komplexe geometrische Analysen sowie Modelle – und beschäftigen uns mit neuen Herangehensweisen an unterschiedliche Materialien. Uns interessieren dabei nicht nur die Materialien selbst, sondern vor allem die Bearbeitung der Rohstoffe. Wir wollen das Potenzial von technologischen Lösungen, wie etwa 3D-Druck oder CNC-Biegetechniken, ausschöpfen, greifen aber gleichzeitig auf traditionelles Handwerk, wie das Glasblasen oder den Bronzeguss, zurück. Manchmal verlangt ein Projekt fundiertes Wissen in einem uns unbekannten Feld, weshalb wir mit externen Partner*innen kooperieren. So arbeiten wir gerade zum Beispiel an mehreren Lichtkunstwerken und haben uns hierzu Lichttechnikexpert*innen ins Boot geholt. Mit manchen externen Ingenieur*innen, wie etwa mit Herwig Bretis von ArtEngineering, arbeiten wir schon seit Jahren regelmäßig zusammen.

CR: Die Ausstellung in Meran widmet sich in drei Teilen den unterschiedlichen Präsentationsformen von Modellen – dem wichtigsten Werkzeug vieler Architekt*innen und Künstler*innen. Was waren eure Überlegungen für die Konzeption der Ausstellung?

Common sky, Albright-Knox Art Gallery Buffalo, New York 2019 –

Im Atrium des Museums zeigen wir ein großformatiges Modell einer Dachkonstruktion, die in Kollaboration zwischen unseren Architekt*innen, unserem Partner ArtEngineering, dem Designteam unseres Auftraggebers in Buffalo und schließlich dem Konstrukteur der baulichen Skulptur, dem Fassadenbauunternehmen Frener & Reifer in Brixen, entstanden ist. Der komplette Prozess fand in der digitalen Welt statt, während das physische Modell vor Ort gefertigt wurde. Wir interessieren uns also für einen globalen Austausch von Ideen und Inspirationen, setzen ihn aber mit lokalem Wissen und regionaler Produktion um.

In einem anderen Teil der Ausstellung sind Handskizzen, Materialproben und Prototypen zu sehen, die im Laufe des Designprozesses für das Restaurant Lyst entstanden sind. In Workshops mit dem Küchenchef Daniel McBurnie, seinem Team und dem Restaurantbesitzer Morten Kirk Johansen haben wir uns während des Entwurfsprozesses ausgetauscht, um eine Designsprache für das Restaurant-Interieur zu entwickeln, wobei wir uns auch von den Prozessen der Menü-Entwicklung inspirieren ließen. SB: Beide Studios arbeiten unabhängig voneinander, aber wir teilen Inspirationen, Recherche und Infrastruktur sowie natürlich das Gebäude. Wir wollten bei der Gründung von Studio Other Spaces hauptsächlich einen Rahmen schaffen, in dem einzigartige Designprozesse entstehen können. In der Regel arbeiten wir bei SOS an großen und komplexen Strukturen, wofür wir ein umfangreiches Netzwerk an externen Partner*innen aufgebaut haben, die unsere Gestaltungsprozesse mit beeinflussen und uns dabei unterstützen, neue räumliche Herangehensweisen zu entwickeln. Niël Meyer, Taylor Dover und Caspar Teichgräber sind als Associates bei SOS in allen Projekten involviert und organisieren diese Prozesse. Olafur und ich tauschen uns fast täglich in Person oder in Videokonferenzen aus, besprechen dabei die Richtung unserer Projekte und konzentrieren uns auf den Inhalt und die Kontextualisierung unserer Arbeit.

SB: Die Ausstellung bei KUNST MERAN MERANO ARTE ist die erste öffentliche Einzelausstellung von Studio Other Spaces. Wir wollen damit Besucher*innen Einblicke in unsere Arbeitsmethoden geben und den langen kollaborativen Prozess dahinter aufzeigen. Der Prozess selbst hat dabei in vielerlei Hinsicht einen großen Einfluss auf das Endergebnis.

Die Dinge ergeben sich nicht einfach spontan, sondern sind das Ergebnis einer Vielzahl von Entscheidungen, die im Laufe des Projektes getroffen werden. Wie es heutzutage in der Architektur üblich ist, finden diese Schritte größtenteils in der digitalen Welt statt. Wir sprechen mit unseren Partner*innen in Videokonferenzen und arbeiten an parametrischen Modellen oder den Daten für die CNC-Produktion. Designprozesse werden in Renderings und Virtual-Reality-Szenen visualisiert.

Virtual Reality gibt uns Zugang zu einer neuen Ebene des Designs – mit einem VR-Headset kann man weit über die Möglichkeiten von Videoprojektionen oder Bildschirmen hinausgehen und sich 360 Grad im Entwurf bewegen. So verschmelzen Ausstellungsraum und Projekt zu einer physischen Erfahrung. Dieses Format ist für uns vor allem interessant, weil wir auf diese Weise viele sonst übliche Ressourcen einsparen, Reisen des Teams reduzieren und somit unseren CO2-Fußabdruck maßgeblich minimieren können. Diese Ausstellungsform kann einfach transportiert werden, Inhalte können hinzugefügt und adaptiert werden und Besucher*innen können sich mit Feedback einbringen und dadurch an der Ausstellung teilhaben.

euren Arbeitsalltag? Wie werden Ideen und Projekte entwickelt? Wie funktionieren der Austausch und die Zusammenarbeit?

CR: Einen großen Raum widmet ihr dem Meles Zenawi Memorial Park in Addis Abeba, an dem ihr seit 2013 arbeitet und der dieses Jahr fertiggestellt werden soll. Besucher*innen können sich in den VR-Projektionen in der Landschaft bewegen und so das Projekt erfahren. Was steckt noch im Meles Zenawi Memorial Park – was man vielleicht in der Ausstellung nicht sieht oder spürt?

Sebastian Behmann, Olafur Eliasson

OE: Der Entwurf für den Memorial Park in Addis Abeba hat viele Ebenen. Ich habe eine langjährige Beziehung zu Äthiopien, habe viele Jahre als Professor an der Ale School of Fine Arts and Design an der Universität von Addis Abeba gelehrt, viele Workshops gegeben und Austauschprogramme zwischen Addis Abeba und Berlin initiiert, und so war ein kollaboratives Projekt wie dieses ein natürlicher nächster Schritt. Wir haben mit dem Entwurf für den Park und einer Aufreihung von Pavillons entlang eines gewundenen Pfades versucht, das Engagement des ehemaligen Präsidenten Meles Zenawi, vor allem in Bezug auf nachhaltiges Wirtschaftswachstum und Bildung, nachzuzeichnen und zu interpretieren. Unser Ziel war es, politische Bestrebungen des frühen 21. Jahrhunderts in Äthiopien sowie die persönliche Geschichte von Meles Zenawi für die Besucher*innen des Parks spürbar zu machen. Den Weg entlangspazierend nimmt man aktiv die Geschichte des Landes wahr – durch das Erlaufen wird die Geschichte spürbar, körperlich erfahrbar.

Der Park ist ein Ort für (Meinungs-) Verschiedenheiten und Debatten. Wir hoffen, dass Besucher*innen ihn als großzügigen öffentlichen Raum wahrnehmen, der Menschen mit den unterschiedlichsten Hintergründen und Meinungen, ob Freund*innen, Unterstützer*innen oder politische Gegner*innen, zusammenführt und zum Verweilen einlädt.

CR: In Anbetracht eurer Projekte in Addis Abeba, Vejle und nun hier in Südtirol – was bedeutet „Design of Collaboration“ für euch?

SB: Wir arbeiten mit einem Netzwerk von Partner*innen zusammen, die uns inspirieren, unser Design prägen und Einfluss auf unseren Arbeitsalltag haben. Das beginnt bei den ersten Recherchen, wo Daten gesammelt werden, umfasst sehr spezifisches Wissen über Produktionsmethoden und reicht bis zur Bauleitung vor Ort. Für uns ist klar, dass wir dringend Alternativen finden müssen, wie wir unsere Umgebung und Umwelt in Zukunft bauen und gestalten. Materialien, Fertigungsverfahren, Transport und das Bauen selbst müssen in einem sorgfältig kuratierten Prozess gestaltet werden, in dem die verschiedenen Teile des Teams gut vernetzt sind, während eine gemeinsame Vision dessen, was wir erreichen wollen, klar kommuniziert wird. Wir wollen globales Wissen vom Fertigen und Bauen mit einem tiefen Verständnis für lokale Gegebenheiten verbinden. Das kann unserer Meinung nach nur mit einem globalen Netzwerk und gleichzeitiger lokaler Zusammenarbeit funktionieren. Wir begeben uns in eine neue Ära von Design und Produktion, in der alles, was wir bisher wussten, hinterfragt werden muss.

Unser Hauptanliegen bei diesem Projekt war es, einen Ort zu schaffen, der nicht nur in die Vergangenheit blickt und diese kritisch analysiert, sondern die Besucher*innen ebenso einlädt, als Protagonist*innen an der Zukunft Äthiopiens teilzuhaben.

keine digitalen Pläne, wir haben die Prototypen quasi mit den Händen geformt und formen lassen. Das, was das Material hergibt, wollten wir durch einfache Bearbeitungsmethoden entfalten. Mobiliar, Leuchten und Geschirr für Lyst bestehen aus hochwertigen Materialien und wurden mit einfachen Fertigungstechniken bearbeitet: ein Brückenschlag zur Küche des Restaurants, wo Zutaten höchster Qualität und klare Handgriffe zu einem Gericht zusammenfinden. In diesem Teil der Ausstellung geht es uns um Materialität, Taktilität und die physische Erfahrung der ausgestellten Objekte. Ihre Materialität und Qualität lassen sich nur in der persönlichen Begegnung erfassen. Mit der Unterstützung der Talking Water Society haben wir außerdem eine Adaption des Grills aus dem Lyst Restaurant in Südtirol produzieren lassen, die während der Ausstellung auf der Terrasse des Kunsthauses steht und mehrmals in Betrieb genommen werden wird.

Studio Other Spaces (SOS) è stato fondato a Berlino, nel 2014, dall’artista Olafur Eliasson e dall’architetto Sebastian Behmann. Per Eliasson, le cui imponenti opere e installazioni in spazi museali e pubblici sono conosciute a livello internazionale, lo sconfinamento nell’architettura è un’evoluzione del tutto logica e naturale. Behmann, che dopo la laurea in architettura all’Università tecnica di Dresda collabora con Eliasson dal 2001, ha contribuito in modo sostanziale alla realizzazione di grandi progetti quali l’allestimento della facciata della sala concerti e centro congressi Harpa di Reykjavik (2005-2011), l’installazione Your Rainbow Panorama per il museo d’arte ARoS di Aarhus (2011), the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion di Londra con Kjetil Thorsen (2007) o il The blind pavilion, parte del padiglione danese alla 50esima Biennale di Venezia (2003).

Christiane Rekade: Olafur e Sebastian, lavorate insieme ormai da molti anni. Avete ideato e realizzato svariate installazioni, opere architettoniche e mostre internazionali, dedicandovi in egual misura alla ricerca e alla sperimentazione.

Come è maturata la decisione, nel 2014, di fondare Studio Other Spaces (SOS)?

Olafur Eliasson: SOS è il frutto della mia collaborazione con Sebastian: da oltre 20 anni, lavoriamo insieme a installazioni, esposizioni e altri progetti spaziali creativi per il mio studio. L’incontro tra arte e architettura mi affascina da sempre e proprio questo connubio ci ha spinto a fondare lo studio di architettura SOS: qui, grazie a un approccio integrato, possiamo unire le due prospettive. I progetti architettonici che si fondono con un ampio spettro di altre discipline e forme espressive, come la filosofia, le scienze sociali e naturali, ma anche l’impegno sociale e gli elementi sonori, celano un enorme potenziale.

Con Studio Other Spaces, l’artista e l’architetto esplorano nuovi metodi di allestimento degli spazi, adottando un approccio sperimentale, allo scopo di scandagliare i limiti dell’architettura e dell’arte.

Il team di Studio Other Spaces si compone oggi di 12 collaboratori, che si dedicano non solo allo sviluppo e alla progettazione, ma anche alla ricerca e all’archiviazione.

Anche le ricerche sui materiali, le analisi climatiche, i workshop di cucina, l’osservazione della natura e gli esperimenti con la luce fanno parte dell’attività di Studio Other Spaces, così come la progettazione di spazi nella realtà virtuale e nella costruzione di modelli.

Sebastian Behmann: È proprio questa disponibilità ad abbracciare altre discipline a caratterizzare i nostri progetti. Il bagaglio empirico maturato nella realizzazione di grandi opere artistiche, come le facciate della Sala concerti e del centro congressi Harpa di Reykjavik, l’installazione permanente Your rainbow panorama ad Århus o il ponte pedonale Cirkelbroen (2015) a Copenaghen, si è rivelato prezioso per il nostro lavoro nell’ambito dei grandi progetti e della costruzione di edifici.

Studio Other Spaces attinge alle nostre esperienze in campo artistico nella gestione di materiali e processi, traslandole nella prassi architettonica. Per noi è importante che, a livello progettuale, arte e architettura si sviluppino in parallelo, traendo ispirazione l’una dall’altra.

CR: Studio Olafur Eliasson (SOE) e Studio Other Spaces (SOS) condividono gli stimolanti spazi di un ex birrificio. Come influenza la vostra quotidianità questa sistemazione? Come nascono idee e progetti? Come funzionano confronto e collaborazione?

imponenti, come il grill del ristorante Lyst, perfettamente funzionante, sulla terrazza della Kunsthaus o il modello sospeso, prodotto in Alto Adige, ospitato nell’atrio. Al centro si collocano in particolare due progetti di recente realizzazione: il Meles Zenawi Memorial Park nella capitale etiope di Addis Abeba (2013-2020) e il design del ristorante Lyst (2019) nella Fjordenhus di Vejle, in Danimarca. Proprio l’iconica Fjordenhus è stata realizzata tra il 2009 e il 2018 da Olafur Eliasson e Sebastian Behmann, contribuendo alla fondazione di SOS.

Dalla sua fondazione, KUNST MERAN MERANO ARTE ha rivolto la propria attenzione non solo al programma artistico, ma anche all’architettura contemporanea. Negli ultimi anni, a Merano, con Gianni Pettena, co-fondatore insieme a Superstudio, Archizoom e Ufo dell’architettura radicale italiana, nonché architetto e docente di lunga data di storia dell’architettura (la cui produzione, tuttavia, si concentra principalmente sull’arte), ma anche con Alterazioni Video, il collettivo di artisti che attraverso Incompiuto, il racconto delle opere in cemento incompiute in Italia, sancisce la nascita di un nuovo stile (non solo architettonico), sono più volte emerse posizioni che si muovono consapevolmente tra arte e architettura, tentando, con le loro visioni, nuove prospettive e approcci inediti all’architettura.

Ogni progetto prende avvio da un’analisi del contesto e dei parametri esistenti, in uno sforzo teso a comprendere il nostro ruolo nella valorizzazione del potenziale offerto da tale scenario. In una fase successiva, per dare forma alle nostre idee, ci avvaliamo di svariati strumenti, tra cui disegni, complesse analisi geometriche e modelli, confrontandoci con nuove modalità di approccio a diversi materiali. A stuzzicare il nostro interesse non sono solo le materie prime in quanto tali, ma anche e soprattutto la loro lavorazione. Intendiamo sfruttare appieno il potenziale di soluzioni tecnologiche quali la stampa 3D o le tecniche di sagomatura CNC, attingendo al contempo al lavoro artigianale tradizionale, come la soffiatura del vetro o la fusione in bronzo. Talvolta, un progetto esige un solido know-how in un ambito a noi sconosciuto ed è qui che entra in gioco la collaborazione con partner terzi: in questo momento, ad esempio, stiamo lavorando a svariate installazioni luminose e a tale scopo abbiamo preso a bordo alcuni esperti di illuminotecnica. Con alcuni ingegneri esterni, come Herwig Bretis di ArtEngineering, collaboriamo regolarmente da svariati anni.

CR: La mostra di Merano, articolata in tre parti, è dedicata alle diverse forme di presentazione dei modelli, il più importante strumento di molti architetti e artisti. Da quali riflessioni è scaturito il concetto alla base dell’esposizione?

SB: Con la mostra al KUNST MERAN MERANO ARTE, la prima personale in uno spazio istituzionale di Studio Other Space, intendiamo proporre uno spaccato dei nostri metodi di lavoro e svelare il lungo iter collaborativo che si cela dietro a ogni creazione. Il processo stesso, sotto molteplici punti di vista, esercita un notevole influsso sull’esito finale: le cose non accadono per caso, ma sono il frutto di una lunga serie

Nell’atrio del museo abbiamo collocato un modello di grandi dimensioni della struttura di un tetto, frutto della collaborazione tra i nostri architetti, il nostro partner ArtEngineering, il team di design del committente di Buffalo e infine l’autore della scultura architettonica, l’azienda bressinese Frener&Reifer, specializzata in sistemi di facciata innovativi. Il processo si è svolto interamente in digitale, mentre il modello fisico è stato realizzato in loco. Pur nutrendo grande interesse per uno scambio di idee e impulsi di respiro globale, prediligiamo il know-how locale e i prodotti regionali.

In un’altra sezione della mostra, sono esposti schizzi a mano libera, campioni di materiali e prototipi, realizzati durante il processo progettuale per il ristorante Lyst. Nell’ambito dei workshop con lo chef Daniel McBurnie, la sua brigata di cucina e il proprietario del ristorante Morten Kirk Johansen, abbiamo dato vita a un confronto creativo volto a sviluppare un linguaggio di design per gli ambienti interni, traendo ispirazione anche dai processi di elaborazione del menu. I disegni tecnici e i progetti digitali hanno ceduto il passo a prototipi plasmati quasi interamente a mano. Il nostro intento era quello di dispiegare il potenziale del materiale mediante sobri metodi di lavorazione: mobilio, luci e stoviglie per Lyst sono stati forgiati da materiali pregiati lavorati con tecniche essenziali, gettando un ponte ideale con la cucina del ristorante, dove ingredienti di eccellente qualità e mani sapienti danno vita a piatti prelibati con semplici gesti. Questa parte della mostra è dedicata ai materiali, alla tattilità e all’esperienza fisica degli oggetti esposti, la cui materialità e qualità si percepiscono solo mediante l’incontro personale. di decisioni prese durante il percorso progettuale. Come è consuetudine per l’architettura, queste fasi si svolgono per lo più nell’universo del digitale: parliamo con i nostri partner in videoconferenza, lavoriamo a modelli parametrici o ai dati per la produzione CNC e visualizziamo i processi di design nei rendering e negli scenari di virtual reality. Proprio la realtà virtuale schiude le porte a un nuovo livello creativo: con un visore VR è possibile andare oltre le possibilità offerte dalle proiezioni video e dagli schermi, muovendosi a 360° all’interno del disegno. Lo spazio espositivo e il progetto si fondono in un’esperienza fisica, dando vita a un formato particolarmente interessante, che ci consente di risparmiare risorse, ridurre i viaggi del team e quindi minimizzare la nostra impronta di carbonio. Questa forma espositiva, poi, può essere facilmente trasportata e i contenuti possono essere integrati e adattati.

Anche i visitatori, fornendo il loro feedback, vengono coinvolti nella mostra, partecipandovi attivamente.

SB: Entrambi gli studi lavorano in modo indipendente, ma condividendo impulsi, ricerca, infrastrutture e naturalmente l’edificio che li ospita. Con la fondazione di Studio Other Spaces volevamo innanzitutto creare un contesto da cui potessero scaturire processi di design unici. Di norma, lavoriamo a strutture complesse di grandi dimensioni, per cui abbiamo sviluppato un’estesa rete di partner esterni, che permeano i nostri processi creativi e ci affiancano nello sviluppo di nuovi approcci spaziali. Niël Meyer, Taylor Dover e Caspar Teichgräber, in qualità di associati di SOS, sono coinvolti in tutti i progetti e si occupano dell’organizzazione di tali processi. Olafur e io ci confrontiamo quasi quotidianamente, di persona o in videoconferenza, discutendo l’orientamento delle nostre opere e concentrandoci sui contenuti e sulla contestualizzazione del nostro lavoro.

OE: Il progetto per il Memorial Park di Addis Abeba è articolato su più livelli. Il mio legame con l’Etiopia è ormai di lunga data: per molti anni ho insegnato alla Ale School of Fine Art and Design dell’Università di Addis Abeba, tenendo svariati workshop e promuovendo programmi di scambio tra la capitale etiope e Berlino. Un rapporto che ha trovato il proprio sbocco naturale in questo progetto, incentrato su un parco e una serie di padiglioni dislocati lungo un sentiero tortuoso, con cui volevamo rievocare e interpretare l’impegno dell’ex premier Meles Zenawi, in particolare a favore dell’istruzione e di una crescita economica sostenibile. Il nostro scopo era quello di rendere tangibili ai visitatori del parco gli sforzi politici profusi in Etiopia agli albori del 21° secolo, così come la vicenda personale di Meles Zenawi. Passeggiando lungo il sentiero, si tocca con mano la storia del Paese, che diventa fisicamente percepibile a ogni passo. Il parco si propone come un luogo dedicato alla diversità (di opinioni) e al dibattito.

Il nostro auspicio è che i visitatori lo percepiscano come un esteso spazio pubblico che riunisce individui dalle origini e dalle vedute più disparate, che si tratti di amici, sostenitori o oppositori politici, invitandoli a indugiare. Con questo progetto abbiamo voluto innanzitutto creare un luogo che non solo guardasse al passato e lo analizzasse criticamente, ma anche che invitasse i visitatori a prendere attivamente parte al futuro dell’Etiopia.

I visitatori possono muoversi all’interno delle proiezioni di realtà virtuale nel paesaggio, toccando con mano il progetto. Ci sono alcuni aspetti del Meles Zenawi Memorial Park che forse non emergono dalla mostra?

Materiali, metodi di produzione, trasporto e costruzione devono essere integrati in un processo accuratamente pianificato, in cui i diversi componenti del team, perfettamente coordinati tra loro, perseguono una visione comune veicolata con chiarezza.

Il nostro intento è quello di coniugare un know-how globale in campo realizzativo e costruttivo con un’approfondita conoscenza delle peculiarità locali. Secondo noi, tutto ciò può funzionare laddove una rete universale si armonizza con una collaborazione sul territorio. Ci stiamo avventurando in una nuova era del design e della produzione, in cui tutto ciò che credevamo di sapere deve essere messo in discussione.

Studio Other Spaces (SOS) was founded in Berlin in 2014 by artist Olafur Eliasson and architect Sebastian Behmann. For Eliasson, whose large-scale art works and installations for museums and public space are internationally renowned, expanding his practice into the field of architecture was a logical development. Behmann, who studied architecture in Dresden and has been working with Eliasson since 2001, was significantly involved in large projects, such as the facades for Harpa Reykjavik Concert Hall and Conference Centre (2005 – 2011), Your rainbow panorama for ARoS art museum in Aarhus (2011), the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion (2007) in London (with Kjetil Thorsen), as well as The blind pavilion, part of the Danish pavilion at the 50 th Biennale Venezia (2003).

At Studio Other Spaces, the artist and the architect pursue an experiment-based approach to the production of space and seek to expand the boundaries of architecture and art. With a staff made up of currently 10 people, the studio is dedicated to development and planning, as well as research and archiving. Material research, climate analyses, cooking workshops, observation of nature and light experiments are just as important to the studio’s design process as model making and designing spaces in virtual reality.

The Design of Collaboration, Studio Other Spaces’s first institutional solo exhibition, presents a tour through topics and focal points in the studio’s working methods. By way of virtual reality, visitors are led through spaces designed by SOS. One can see physical models and prototypes – such as an adapted version of a barbecue designed for Lyst Restaurant in Vejle, Denmark, which can actually be used on the terrace of KUNST MERAN MERANO ARTE, or the model hanging in the museum’s atrium, which was produced in South Tyrol. The exhibitions main emphasis lies on two recently completed projects: the Meles Zenawi Memorial Park in Addis Ababa,

Christiane Rekade: Olafur and Sebastian, you have been working together for many years now. You have developed and created countless installations, architectural works, and international exhibitions while also placing a strong emphasis on research and experiments. What led to founding Studio Other Spaces in 2014?

Olafur Eliasson: SOS was born out of a collaboration that stretches over about 20 years, during which time we have been working creatively on projects, installations, exhibitions, and other kinds of spatial work within the context of my studio. I’ve always been excited by exploring the overlaps between art and architecture, and it is this overlap that inspired Sebastian and me to establish SOS as an architecture studio that works with an integrated approach, spanning both of these perspectives.

There’s a lot of potential in pursuing spatial work across a range of registers and including other fields as well, like philosophy, the social and natural sciences, activism, and sound.

Sebastian Behmann: Yes, I think this openness to other disciplines is key to our thinking. And when it comes to art meeting architecture, the experience we have been able to gather from large artworks such as the Facades of Harpa Reykjavik Concert Hall and Conference Centre, Your rainbow panorama in Århus, and Cirkelbroen (2015) in Copenhagen, has been very valuable for our largescale projects and buildings at SOS. The art practice offers growth in our material knowledge and production processes, which Studio Other Spaces can then transfer to architectural language. We’re interested in finding a way to let architecture and art run on parallel tracks during the development process, not using one discipline as a canvas for the other. These projects, in which both art and architecture empower one another in their overlap, are most inspiring to me.

CR: Studio Olafur Eliasson and Studio Other Spaces share an inspiring space in a former brewery. How does this setup influence your workflow on a day-to-day basis? How are ideas and projects developed? How do you exchange thoughts and collaborate?

SB: The two studios work independently, but we share inspiration, research, and infrastructure, as well as the building, of course. A key reason for establishing Studio Other

Ethiopia (2013 – 2020) and the design of Lyst Restaurant (2019) inside Fjordenhus in Vejle, Denmark. The iconic Fjordenhus was built by Olafur Eliasson and Sebastian Behmann and was a significant reason for founding Studio Other Spaces.

Since the founding of KUNST MERAN MERANO ARTE, the museum has concentrated not only on an artistic program but also on placing an emphasis on contemporary architecture.

Showing positions that deliberately range somewhere between art and architecture by way of Gianni Pettena, co-founder of the Italian Architetture Radicale (like Superstudio, Archizoom, Ufo), a trained architect with a long career as a professor for architecture history, while in his practice focusing mainly on art – or Alterazioni Video, the artist collective known for incompiuto, proclaiming a new style (not only restricted to architecture) for Italy’s unfinished concrete buildings, the museum has always been interested in exploring new perspectives and approaches to architecture.

The museum’s atrium shows a largescale model of a roof structure that was developed in close collaboration between our architects, ArtEngineering, our client’s design team in Buffalo, and, finally, the building construction specialist Frener & Reifer in Brixen, who are the producers of the sculpture on display. The entire process took place in the digital world, while the physical model was produced locally.

So, we’re interested in a globalised exchange of ideas and inspiration while focussing on local production and knowledge.

CR: The exhibition in Meran is made up of three parts, which are all based on the different ways to present models – the common tool of artists and architects.

How did you go about developing the concept for the exhibition?

SB: The exhibition at KUNST MERAN MERANO ARTE marks the first public solo presentation of SOS’s work. With this show, we wanted to give visitors insights into our working methods and offer an understanding for how our projects come out of a long collaborative effort. The process has a huge influence on the final outcome in many ways. Of course, things don’t just appear, but are the accumulation of the many small decisions we make. As is now the norm in contemporary architecture, these steps are made in the digital world, whether by connecting with collaborators in video conferences, working on parametric models, or CNC production. The design process is visualised in computer renderings, and in virtual reality settings. For the exhibition at KUNST MERAN MERANO ARTE, virtual reality allows us to step into a new layer of the design – wearing the VR headset, one can go beyond the capacities of video projections and TV screens. You can immerse yourself in a 360-degree view, moving freely within the design. The exhibition space and the project itself become one physical

In another part of the show, we present physical sketches, material samples, and prototypes developed for the design of Lyst Restaurant inside Fjordenhus in Vejle, Denmark.

During the design process, we met with chef Daniel McBurnie’s kitchen team and restaurant owner Morten Kirk Johansen in workshops and developed a design language for the interior that was inspired by the way Daniel had created the menu.

There were no drawings, there was no digital planning, but we made prototypes from the material itself and created the objects through a hands-on process. Just like in a kitchen, where good ingredients come together to form a dish, we used basic raw materials and simple production techniques to give shape to the furniture, lighting, and utensils. This part of the exhibition offers materiality and tactility, a physical experience. Through their physical existence, the objects can become part of the world.

Their materiality and quality can only be experienced in person.

Thanks to the Talking Water Society, we were furthermore able to produce an adapted version of the Lyst barbecue in South Tyrol which is situated on the terrace of the Kunsthaus and will be used for several events during the exhibition.

CR: You dedicate a large space in the exhibition to Meles Zenawi Memorial Park in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa, a project that you have worked on since 2013 and that is planned to be completed this year. Visitors to the exhibition are invited to move around the landscape in VR projections, to experience the project. What aspects are essential to the Meles Zenawi Memorial Park that one might not see or feel in the show?

OE: The memorial park design in Addis Ababa builds on several layers. I’ve had a long-lasting relationship with Ethiopia – I was a professor at the Ale School of Fine Art and Design

experience. We are experimenting with this format for exhibitions, as it can substantially reduce the carbon footprint with regard to our team’s travel, and potentially by replacing many of the usual physical resources. This type of exhibition can be transported easily, content can be added, and visitors’ feedback can influence and become part of the show.

Spaces was to create conditions for unique design processes.

At SOS, we work on mostly large and complex structures, for which we have established a large and varied team of collaborators who influence our design process and enable us to explore new spatial approaches. Our three associates Niël Meyer, Taylor Dover, and Caspar Teichgräber oversee and organise these processes. Olafur and I have daily exchanges in person or on video calls to discuss the direction of our projects, focussing on the content and contextualisation of our work.

We begin by analysing a project’s parameters and surroundings, trying to understand our way into it and the potential within its context. In the next step, we use various kinds of media – sketches, complex geometry analysis, models, and new material approaches to give our ideas shape. It’s not only the materials themselves that we are interested in, but the process of shaping raw materials. We try to explore the possibilities of techniques such as 3D printing and CNC bending technologies, while at the same time incorporating traditional craftsmanship such as glass blowing or bronze casting. Sometimes a project requires in-depth knowledge from an unfamiliar field, such as in our recent work on light installations, for which we have been collaborating with light technicians. We also work closely with external engineers on a regular basis, for example, Herwig Bretis from ArtEngineering, with whom we have been collaborating for many years.

at Addis Ababa University for many years, and having given several workshops and initiated many exchange programs between Addis Ababa and Berlin, a collaborative project was a natural next step. In the park design, and in the sequencing of pavilions along a meandering path, we have tried to capture the work that the late Ethiopian president Meles Zenawi began, in particular regarding sustainable economic growth and education. Our aim is to have the political aspirations of early twenty-first century Ethiopia and Meles’s personal journey resonate with visitors as they walk through the park. Walking in this recreational spot entails taking in history actively – walking makes history felt, embodied. The park is a site for difference and debate. We hope that visitors will experience it as a generous public space that welcomes people with diverse backgrounds and opinions, friends, supporters, and political adversaries alike. It’s been crucial to us to create a space that not only looks toward the past but also encourages visitors to become the protagonists of the future of Ethiopia.

CR: In light of the projects in Addis Ababa and Vejle, and now here in South Tyrol, what does ‘The Design of Collaboration?’ mean to you?

SB: We work with a network of collaborators that inspire and form our design and day-to-day workflow. This starts with the initial research of collecting data, and includes very specific knowledge of certain production methods and organisation at local construction sites. Knowing that we urgently need to find alternatives for different ways of building our environment – from the choice of materials down to the production process, transportation, and construction – we think this requires a carefully curated design process, where different parts of the teams are well connected and a common vision of what we want to achieve is communicated. Our aim is to combine a globalised experience of how things are built with a deep knowledge and understanding of local conditions.

This can only be achieved by working in a global network, by collaborating with local people. Our design language is based on that collaborative effort. We are stepping into a new era of design and production, where everything we know needs to be questioned.

Studio Other Spaces Projects in exhibition

Studio Other Spaces, founded by artist Olafur Eliasson and architect Sebastian Behmann in Berlin in 2014, connects art and architecture through interdisciplinary and experimental building projects and artworks for public space. Recent projects include the design of Lyst Restaurant in Fjordenhus in Vejle, Denmark; the reinvention of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York, forming a new public space connecting the existing Bunshaft Gallery, the surrounding park, and the new master plan and addition designed by OMA; a permanent work of art for the 15th and 16th floors of the Morland Mixité Capitale building in Paris; and across the Mediterranean in Addis Ababa, the Meles Zenawi Memorial Park.
