Die Internationalen Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen betreiben neben dem Festival eines der angesehensten, umfangreichsten und ältesten Kurzfilmarchive der Welt. Die Sammlung umfasst heute knapp 2 000 Titel, darunter zahlreiche Unikate und W erke bedeutender Filmemacher wie Kenneth Anger, Santiago Álvarez, Maya Deren, Werner Herzog, Alexander Kluge, Jan Lenica, George Lucas, Matthias Müller, Roman Polanski, Alain Resnais oder Jan Švankmajer. In addition to putting on a festival, the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen also operates one of the largest, oldest and most highly respected short film archives in the world. Today the collection encompasses nearly 2,000 titles, among them many unique prints and works by major filmmakers such as K enneth Anger, Santiago Álvarez, Maya Deren, Werner Herzog, Alexander Kluge, Jan Lenica, George Lucas, Matthias Müller, Roman Polanski, Alain R esnais and Jan Švankmajer. Auf den folgenden Seiten möchten wir Ihnen unsere 45 Neuakquisitionen (S. 34 – 45) vorstellen. Aus den interessantesten Arbeiten des letzten Festivals haben wir vier Programme zusammengestellt (S. 12 – 25). On the following pages we would like to present to you our 45 new acquisitions (pages 34 – 45). Im ältesten Kurzfilmwettbewerb der Welt konkurrieren jedes Jahr etwa 60 Beiträge, die aus knapp 4 000 Arbeiten ausgewählt werden. Dieses Programm versammelt einige der besten und interessantesten Arbeiten des Internationalen Wettbewerbs 2014. Präsentiert werden fünf internationale, preisgekrönte Arbeiten, die um Erinnerung, Einsamkeit und Verlorenheit kreisen, aber immer auch helle und positive Akzente setzen. So erforscht Teboho Edkins in Kapstadt spielerisch wie dokumentarisch die komplexe Realität eines Lebens am Rand, stets in unmittelbarer Erwartung des Todes. Maria Kourkouta versucht das Gefühl des Dazugehörens wiederzugewinnen, indem sie Found Footage mit Gedichten und Musik zu einer vielschichtigen Collage verbindet. Und Neeuklidinė Geometrija erzählt in bisweilen irritierenden, herausragend animierten Bildern von der scheinbaren Endlichkeit der Liebe. Als Auswahlprogramm steht hier das große Kino der kleinen Form zur Entdeckung bereit.
Every year, some 60 works are selected from n early 4,000 entries to compete in the world’s oldest short film competition. This programme now brings together some of the best and most interesting works featured in the 2014 International Competition. On show are five award-winning international films that revolve around the serious themes of memory, loneliness and isolation but always with some bright, positive highlights. Teboho Edkins, for example, explores in his documentary with a playful twist the complex realities of life on the fringes of Cape Town society, where the spectre of death is always imminent. Maria Kourkouta tries to regain a sense of belonging by combining found footage with poetry and music into a multi-layered collage. And Neeuklidinė Geometrija uses sometimes perplexing but always outstandingly animated images to tell of the apparently finite nature of love. The grand cinema of the short form is here to be discovered in a specially selected programme.

Familie, aber auch alternative Lebensgemeinschaften stehen im Mittelpunkt dieses Programms mit Arbeiten des Deutschen Wettbewerbs 2014. Während wir in Das satanische Dickicht – EINS die Auflösungserscheinungen einer bildungsbürgerlichen Kleinfamilie boshaft und präzise vorgeführt bekommen, zeigt uns Udita Bhargava auf sinnliche Weise und ganz direkt einen indischen Carrom Club als faszinierende Mischung aus Spielhalle und Halbwelt. Loretta Fahrenholz lässt klassische Genreunterscheidungen als überholt erscheinen, wenn Uli Lommel inmitten einer merkwürdig anmutenden Lebensgemeinschaft unbeirrt lässig agiert. Susann Maria Hempel schließlich führt eine spezielle ostdeutsche Erfahrung nach 1989 traumwandlerisch als explodierte Puppenstube wieder auf. Dafür erhielt sie schon verschiedene wichtige Auszeichnungen, in Oberhausen den Preis für den besten Beitrag des Deutschen Wettbewerbs 2014.
This programme containing works from the German Competition 2014 centers on family, as well as alternative forms of communal living. While Das satanische Dickicht – EINS mischievously parades before our eyes the details of how a small and exemplary middle-class family begins to fray at the edges, Udita Bhargava takes us on a sensory journey right to the heart of an Indian Carrom Club, a fascinating mix of arcade and demimonde. Loretta Fahrenholz makes classical genre distinctions seem outdated when Uli Lommel, undeterred in the midst of a seemingly odd family situation, maintains his usual nonchalant air. And finally, Susann Maria Hempel recalls with unerring acuity an experience unique to East Germany after 1989, portrayed as an exploded doll’s house. She has received many important awards for her work, including the prize for the best contribution to the 2014 German Competition at Oberhausen.

Fünf Filme zwischen Black Box und White Cube, die sich der Vergangenheit stellen und die Frage nach dem „Was bleibt?“ auf unterschiedliche Weise behandeln. Während Lior Shamriz einem vergangenen Bild von Berlin auch im wortwörtlichen Sinne nachgeht, zeigt uns Josef Dabernig in brillant komponierten Schwarzweißbildern einige Menschen am Rande eines italienischen Flusses, die sich die Landschaft aneignen – ungeachtet ihrer Unwirtlichkeit. La estancia, Gewinner des diesjährigen Großen Preises der Stadt Oberhausen, thematisiert ein Massaker um Landrechte in Paraguay und ist als eine Reihe subtiler Tableaus konstruiert. Die Regisseure dieses Programms bedienen sich zum Teil sehr ungewöhnlicher Techniken und Ästhetiken, einige zeigten ihre Arbeiten bereits mit großem Erfolg in Kunstausstellungen. Dabei erlauben diese zum Teil preisgekrönten Arbeiten insgesamt einen Einblick in den aktuellen Stand des internationalen filmkünstlerischen Schaffens.
Five films between Black Box and White Cube that confront the past and ask in diverse ways “What remains?”. Whilst Lior Shamriz both literally and figuratively investigates a bygone picture of Berlin, Josef Dabernig shows us in brilliantly composed black-and-white images people sitting on the banks of an Italian river who simply appropriate the landscape – regardless of its inhospitality. La estancia, winner of this year’s Grand Prize of the City of Oberhausen, depicts a massacre sparked by the battle for land rights in Paraguay, reconstructed as a series of subtle tableaux. The directors in this film programme employ a range of very unusual techniques and aesthetics, and some of their works have been shown to great acclaim in art exhibitions. Taken together, these films, some of them awardwinning, give viewers an insight into the current state of international artist films.

Während sich in diesen Tagen verschiedene Religionen zunehmend konfrontativ gegenüberstehen, wirft dieses Programm einen frischen und unverstellten Blick auf Fragen des Glaubens und Formen der Religionsausübung weltweit. Wir erleben, wie eine scheinbare Wundererscheinung in Polen von zufälligen Beobachtern diskutiert wird, und schauen auf einen Papstbesuch in Deutschland, bei dem tausende Christen und einige Schwule und Lesben gemeinsam auf die Ankunft von Benedikt XVI. warten und sich dabei eine Schlacht der Gesänge liefern. In Zakaria wird das Studium islamischer Gebetsrituale zum Mittelpunkt einer anrührenden Begegnung zweier Jugendlicher, während wir in Mast Qalandar Augenzeugen der ungewöhnlichen Pilgerreisen nach Sehwan Sharif in P akistan werden. Am Ende lässt Herbert Fritsch, der derzeit wohl ungewöhnlichste Vertreter des deutschen Regietheaters, einen Bibeltext von über 100 Kindern eindringlich vortragen.
In days when conflicts between diverse religions are heating up, this programme takes a fresh and honest look at matters of faith and forms of worship. We see how an apparent miracle occurring in Poland is commented on by random bystanders and then observe a papal visit to Germany where thousands of Christians and also some gays and lesbians who are waiting together for the arrival of Benedict XVI engage in a battle of song. In Zakaria, the study of Islamic prayer rituals leads to a moving encounter between two adolescents, while in Mast Qalandar we witness the unusual pilgrimages made to Sehwan Sharif in Pakistan. Herbert Fritsch for his part, arguably one of the most provocative contemporary exponents of German director’s theatre, has over 100 children recite a Bible text – a haunting display.

Für lange Zeit war der „Weg zum Nachbarn“ das prägende Motto des Festivals. Es galt nicht nur für Osteuropa; gerade in den 70er und 80er Jahren etablierten sich weitere „Nachbarn“ wie etwa der lateinamerikanische Kontinent mit den politischen Filmen des „Dritten Kinos“. Diese zum Teil experimentellen Dokumentarfilme thematisieren die soziale und politische Situation in den lateinamerikanischen Ländern und richten ihr Augenmerk vor allem auf die Willkürherrschaft von Diktaturen, die fortschreitende Armut der Bevölkerung und die andauernde Einflussnahme US-amerikanischer Politik und Wirtschaft auf den Kontinent. Am Ende werfen wir einen spielerischen Blick auf die heutige Situation und entdecken dabei durchaus Kontinuitäten. Insgesamt unternimmt das Programm eine kleine Zeitreise durch die Kurzfilmgeschichte Lateinamerikas und spiegelt dabei gleichzeitig auch Festival und Archiv der Kurzfilmtage. Fast alle Arbeiten wurden in Oberhausen mit Hauptpreisen ausgezeichnet.
For a long time, “Way to the Neighbour” was the festival motto. It was meant to apply not only to Eastern Europe, however, for in the 70s and 80s further “neighbours” came onto the scene: for example in Latin America with the political films of the “Third Cinema”. These documentary films, some of them experimental, address the social and political situation in the Latin American countries, focusing mainly on the arbitrary rule by dictatorships, the unremitting poverty of the population and the constant attempts by US politics and economy to expand their influence on the continent. At the end of the programme, we take a playful look at the situation today and indeed discover some continuities. Overall, the programme takes a short trip in time through the history of Latin American short film, in the process also reflecting developments in the Oberhausen festival and its archive. Nearly all works on view won major awards in Oberhausen.

Die Kurzfilmtage kaufen oder leihen Filme / Videos aus dem Festival für das von ihr verwaltete Archiv der Stadt Oberhausen. Die Kurzfilmtage haben für die Werke das Vorführrecht erworben. Die Werke müssen in sämtlichen mit ihrer Aufführung zusammenhängenden Publikationen unter dem Titel „Aus dem Archiv der Internationalen Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen“ oder mit dem „Archivfilm“-Signet angekündigt werden.
The International Short Film Festival Oberhausen acquires or rents films / videos shown at its festival for the archive of the City of Oberhausen, which it also manages. The Festival has obtained rights for public screening of these titles. All public announcements of any form and in any format in connection with the public screening of these films / videos must be made under the title “From the Archive of the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen”, or include our “Archive Film” logo.

Leiht der gleiche Vertragspartner innerhalb des Verleihjahres (Sept. 2014 – Aug. 2015) mehrfach aus, kann er von Rabatten profitieren. Einzelfilme werden bei jedem weiteren Ausleihvorgang jeweils 10 Euro, Programme jeweils 20 Euro günstiger. Maximal drei Rabatte pro Jahr sind möglich.
Discounts are available for those who borrow films more than once during the same distribution year (Sept. 2014 – Aug. 2015). A 10-euro discount will be given on individual films for each further transaction, and a 20-euro discount for programmes. A maximum of three discounts is possible per year.
