Hello
and welcome to Kustom Kulture Life!
What is Kustom Kulture? Pulling inspiration from the past, Kustom Kulture is vintage elegance, the rebellousness of early rock'n'roll, the raw power of a V8 engine at full throttle, the madness that is low brow art, the horror from gothic darkness, & the attitude of punk, all thrown into a giant blender and served in a modern glass adorned with tattoos. The end result is a subculture that is diverse, with a distinct nod to the past. Kustom Kulture Life acts as the central hub in the wheel, a place where aspects collide, ideas are shared and contacts made. We hope you enjoy reading our magazine as much as we enjoy living it. Well, hello there and welcome to the very first ever issue of Kustom Kulture Life, an online magazine that ties all the strings of the Kustom Kulture world together in one neat little package. My name is Nikky the Rockabilly Filly, and I am the editor/ creator/ crazy car lady behind this whole shebang. I am thrilled to be bringing this to you, and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I have creating it for you. The master plan is for this to be a totally interactive magazine, so please, feel free to email me at rockabillyfilly@kustomkulturelife.com with feedback, pics, stories, event reviews, Grannie's pie recipes.... Before I go too much further, there are a few people I really need to thank for getting this baby out of my head and onto the internet. My dear kids, for being the reason I am pursuing my passion, being so incredibly patient with me and being understanding when I run off to car shows without you. Redecorating my office is just a bonus! Laurence Finn, my 'web guy', for creating the site for me while listening to Nancy Sinatra in a very big shed - I wouldn't be here without you. Mucho gracias. The amazing Nicole Stewart for finding what animates me and encouraging me to run with it. Aidan for the kick in the pants I needed to get started. Lastly but by no means least, to my amazing Dad for being the hot rod driving, cool rocking daddy that he is. I luv yoos all..... Don't forget to check out our website - kustomkulturelife.com - for a veritable Yellow Pages of our Kulture & a forum to chat/ hangout at. We also have a sister site -kustomkulturecalander.com - listing car shows, swap-meets, band gigs, dances, markets, cruise nights etc. Easier than asking the lady with retro hair & make up at the checkout if she knows when the next show'n'shine is on!!!!
Your ever faithful editor on her way to Chopped......was a windy day.....my poor hair got blown out of its 'do' before I even got there.... And YES, very very overdue for an eyebrow wax......
I am very much in luuuuurve with the above car.....thinking of starting a go fund me to buy one...please, the poor Ed is V8 starved, have a heart? Hehehehehe.
CHOPPEDDoingit in thedirt! Ah, Chopped. 3 days of mayhem involving a dirt track drag strip, music, camping with your mates, and a plethora of rods, customs, bikes, kids on retro pushies, go karts...everything you could imagine on wheels really. Every year I attend I have to be dragged kicking and screaming home, and this year was no exception... The Friday public holiday meant 3 clear days to play...well for those of us that didn't have to work...(editor goes off on a rant involving every swear word known to man...) The queues to get in stretched back kilometres as literally thousands of people made their way to Newstead - the perfect, late 20s/ early 30s temps the icing on the cake. No words I type can honestly do this event justice. I will just have to let the photos do the talking. (Editor's note. I'm still mega pissed over the Fireballs playing Friday night, day job meant I couldn't get there till Saturday....!!!) All photos on this page kindly supplied by Daniel Porter.

Easy pin-uphair. with Miss Dotty D'Mure
I love being able to style my hair to suit my outfits, and lately I have been wearing my hair in a long pony tail with bumper bangs for a more rockabilly look. Having shorter hair though means if you want to have that gorgeous long pony tail you?re going to have to go out and buy hair extensions or a clip in pony tail, right? What if there was a way to create this look without having to buy a single thing? .well except maybe lots and lots of bobby pins and hair spray? Well you can! Follow along to create this simple rockabilly hair style perfect for gals who are newly trying their hand at some fun pinup hair styles. For this hair style you will need: -Bobby pins -?U?shaped pins or French pins (don?t worry if you don?t have them, normal bobby pins work just fine) -A rat tail comb or fine tooth comb -A teasing brush -Hair ties -Hair spray -A hair rat or hair donut (cut to make a straight piece) -Hair scarf to finish the look off Now we?ve got all our bits and pieces, let?s get styling!
Step 1*For this look to work well it is best to style hair that has some curl in it.* Section off your bang area creating a U shape by running the tip of your rat tail comb or teasing brush around the top or your head from one side of your forehead to the other. Don?t worry if it?s not perfect, we?ll be covering it up with a hair scarf later. Clip that section out of the way; we?ll save the bangs for last.
Step 2We?re going to create our long pony tail by tying double ponytails! Section off your top ponytail starting at the base of your hairline near your ears, running your fingers all the way up to the base of your crown. Try to make a clean section to make tying it a little easier, but it?s ok if it?s not perfect. Clip that section out of the way; we?ll come back to it. Step 3Gather the hair under your top section and tie in a ponytail. You may need to play around with the positioning depending on your hair length but I find my hair is long enough to have the lower ponytail lower down and still have the top one cover it.
Step 4Create a little volume on top by taking small sections to tease. You can do as much or as little as you want, depending on how much volume you prefer. I started just behind my bangs and went all the way to the very top of my crown. A handy tip I learned to create one great big mass of teasing is to marry your sections together. You do this by teasing the new section into the one you?ve just done and this will blend everything together really nicely. Give the hair a good spray all over and don?t panic when you look at the giant bird?s nest you?ve created. It will get better, I promise!
Step 5Smoothing out your teasing can be a bit tricky, if you press your brush too hard you?re just going to brush out all that teasing you just put in! My secret weapon is my $2 Ebay teasing brush which has super soft bristles which are useless for teasing but as it turns out, are perfect for smoothing! So using very light strokes and holding the brush at a slight angle just lightly skim the brush over your hair until you smooth the very top layer out enough so that you can?t see any teasing poking through and then just tie that ponytail up too. You may have noticed that volume you created may be looking a little flat, don?t panic we can fix that too! Using the end of your tail comb or teasing brush, push it into the teasing and lift gently to shape all around that area till you?re happy with it, then give it a spritz with some hair spray.
Step 6Moving onto the bangs now and you guessed it, more teasing! I like to start from the bottom section and work my way up. So again taking thin sections run your comb down to the roots in a ?C?motion taking the comb out before repeating (If you run your comb down and back up again without lifting it off the hair you?re just going to take your teasing out). Don?t forget to marry each section together for one uniform ball of teased goodness!
Step 7Smooth your hair down the same way you did before, running the brush lightly over to smooth the top layer so you can?t see any teasing coming through. Using your hair rat or cut donut; wind the ends of your hair around and then roll the rat up to about mid forehead. I guess placement comes down to personal preference but I have seen bumper bangs placed right on the hair line and to me this always makes me think of Edwardian hairstyles where women wore their hair off their face in these great big bouffant hair styles. Anyway I?m getting side tracked either way is fun just comes down to the individual. Spread the hair out so it covers the rat and bend slightly to give the bangs a bit of a curve. Using your ?U?pins or bobby pins, push them up at the bottom into the hair rat to hold it in place. I used four and put one on either side at the ends for extra security.
Step 8Give your bangs a good spraying to smooth out any fly-aways. Something I like to do is spray the end of my brush and roll it all along the bang and under to make sure any stray hairs are tucked under. Next just tie your hair scarf in a bow and you?re done! *Quick tip* Keeping a hair scarf in place all day can be a pain in the tooshie, so to hold mine in place I pop a bobby pin on either side of the knot and then one on either side of my temple.
You did it! See told ya, nice and easy!
Thanks for reading, I hope this has been helpful in creating some fun new looks! xo Miss Dottie DeMure

RODOFTHEMONTH. WHITEHOTANDBLUE. CRAIGISSEL'S28 A. Ok, going to start out by saying that this car will NEVER be for sale, like EVER. Owner Craig made it very, very clear!! And I have to say I don?t blame him. This sweet little 1928 Model A roadster is a pearl beyond price. Originally built by a 19 year old Craig in 1999 with a 8BA Ford Flathead - swapped for a 4:71 super charged small block Chevvy in 2003 - this lil roadster was built to resemble the salt flat cars of the 50s and 60s. Craig has again emphatically stated ?it never has and will never ever will have a roof.?So topless she is and always will be. Other techie specs for you revheads include? ? Customline rims (Ed?s heart skips a beat), 33 x 12.5 R 15 tyres on rear, 165R15 on front, ?57 Chevvy hubcaps, and a Falcon ute lsd with a 3:55/ 1 ratio.
