Transcon's Western Harvest Fifth Annual Bred Heifer Sale

Page 1

The Western Harvest is well known as one of the highest quality offerings of Simmental bred heifers offered annually in Canada. The exclusive bred heifer theme with the welcoming demeanour has added to the success and public attractiveness.

As a foundation anchor to the sale, is without doubt the highly reputable Virginia Ranch program. I really don’t need to talk of all the quality merits of this herd and the success people have had with their past purchases, this is all very well known. But my admiration continues beyond the quality with the amazing disposition of the group. Upon summer inspection, Harry drove me out to their pasture, then called them, they came and we walked in and out all amongst them, then most all of them laid down in a circular formation all around us. They stayed there after an extended visit between Harry and I! I find it especially amazing as we all know that bred heifers, above all else, can act a bit “silly” especially in a wide open pasture environment. This is just more added value to one of Canada’s best breeding programs! As a fellow “Bull Spectrum” partner to Virginia Ranch and long term Western Harvest consignor, Tymarc Livestock is one of the leading Red Simmental herds in Canada. This program “flies under the radar” operating with a quiet, humble demeanour but is not short of quality and a serious commitment to great herdbulls such as T-Bone, Accelerator, Crossfire, Cinch and Badger all stacked into the “DNA”! Count on solid return on your investment here! The Starwest program has been a notable force in the Fullblood Simmental ranks for several years now and has added to their commitment to the dedication they have to keep creating a high-end product by relocating to North Central Alberta and a continued effort to grow the herd. Now, I mentioned the Fullblood sector of the herd, but don’t think the Black & Red Purebred core isn’t industry friendly! As a matter of fact, Starwest will feature more Purebreds than Fullbloods at this year’s Western Harvest!

My admiration, among many others, for the female side of the breeding program has always been high at Eagle Ridge Simmentals.

This is a very long running herd that has many credentials for cattle that have generated lots of revenue in other herds.

Hidden Stone Farm and Camden Cattle Company haven’t sold many, if any, females in the last many years but have been focusing on a bull clientele of which both have been successful in East Central Alberta. Last year, both of these programs offered some of their top bred heifers and both had successful appearances. This year we welcome another member of the reputable Bull Spectrum Group in GSB Simmentals. This excellent set of heifers will be one of, if not, the largest group ever offered by GSB at public auction.

We also welcome the breeding programs of Langer Simmentals with another appearance here. These are always very well bred cattle. The very methodically bred RDG program also returns with some good heifers, these people understand the merits of the cattle business from both the registered and commercial sides of the business. More quality Fullblood females in their first appearance to the Western Harvest will come from Spruce View Acres who have been purchasing many top end cattle through sales in the past years. We will also have the nice young family from Keato Meadows Simmentals joining them with an excellent group of Fullbloods. They have been, and still are, strong consignors to the Red Deer Simmental Bull Sale and Fleckvieh Equation.

Please be with us in Innisfail for this excellent Simmental event. If you can’t attend and would like to bid, please feel free to utilize our industry-leading, highly-trusted order-buying service by simply calling any of cell phone numbers listed. See you in Innisfail,

Wow what a year. Snow up to your butt til May, then fed cows til June 1st, then very dry all summer; now bedding weaned calves on October 1st with a foot of snow as I compose these notes! The positive side to this comment is how blessed and better off we are than a lot of the world! This past June we were blessed with our first grandchild when our son Brandon & his wife Dani had a son named Ryerson.

We would like to welcome everybody to the 5th Annual Western Harvest sale. We want to thank Transcon and the Innisfail Auction Mart for their professional commitment to this sale. We also appreciate our fellow consignors whom are making this sale possible. Our heifers did not come off of summer pasture til October 8th and were pictured in their working clothes shortly thereafter. We hope they meet your approval or expectations. If you happen to be in our area prior to sale day, please feel free to stop at the farm to view the gals at home.

We were very excited to purchase Kuntz Gudas 15E @ the Kuntz/ McIntosh/SAJ Bull sale last March. He was one of the high sellers that day @ $22,000. His sire, Salton is known for his calving ease on 1st calving heifers. His dam is full sister to the $48,000 Kuntz Climax, the $25,000 Kuntz Sonic, the $19,000 Kuntz Duramax and the $19,000 Kuntz Determined. Gudas is a smooth made bull with good length and a deep hind quarter. His calves will be exciting!

Ducati was one of the two bulls that started the Beechinor Bull sale in 2017. Brad Parker(Parview Stock Farms) purchased him that day. After viewing Ducati and some of his offspring @ Parview, we bought into this calving ease bull to use on some of our heifers. He is a very correct bull with lots of eye appeal. His mother, topped the Pasture Treasures female sale back in 2015. Looking forward to seeing his calves this coming January 2019. 4

Riskan Strut 16D was the high selling bull at the 2017 South Saskatchewan Simmental Bull sale. Shane Michelson had heard that I was looking for a heifer bull so gave me a call and recommended this Sherriff son. We bred him to all of our red & black heifers and all of our 1st & 2nd purebred calvers. He calved exceptionally well, heifers we sold bred to him in last year’s sale, we had all good reports.

I really didn’t think I would be selling this special heifer, but with the many tours through the pasture this past summer, Champagne appeared to be the “go to gal”; many who toured the heifers in the pasture, wanted to see her. So I decided, “What the Hell”, let’s put her in the sale. She comes from our BLI Reba cow family. Her dam Virginia Renee 49W is the perfect cow. She has produced siblings of Champagnes that are at work for Beechinor Bros of Bentley, Neil Knight of Innisfail, and the Norwood Family Farm in Ontario. She also has a daughter working for us at home too.

Pinot is right out of our matriarch cow BLI Reba (BLI 1013R), whom is the Grand-dam to our Lot 1 bred heifer. Some of you breeders will remember one of Reba’s daughters topping one of the Cow-a-rama sales, selling to Vaughn Gibbons of Ontario. In 2015 another daughter was placed as a choice duo lot in the Western Harvest sale – she was not selected, so came home home and gave birth to a daughter which was sold last December in the Western Harvest sale to Clearwater Simmentals of Olds for $15,000. This heifer goes back to one of our old matriarch cows, Eagle-Ridge Jahari 33P. Chateau is owned by my son Brandon, and he told me to brag this heifer up make some awesome footnotes. I told him, “I am actually going to write up a shitty one, as I may want to buy her back!” To make things worse, his in-laws bought tickets for a family trip to Hawaii, and he is having to miss the sale this year…not a very happy camper! Now getting back to the heifer, Chateau’s dam was purchased from Stone Simmentals at one of the Pasture Treasures female sales. I thought she was one of the best heifers in entire sale that year. Her first calf – a female rung the bell, selling to Beechinor Bros Simmentals for $18,000. Her 2nd female sold to Eagle-Ridge Simmentals. I thinks Chateau deserves a long second look. She is bred to our new $22,000 Heifer bull – Kuntz Gudas. Exposed March 22–April 25, 2018 to Kuntz Gudas - Reg #1228620 Observed bred March 24, 2018

These three females are really full sisters, Beaujolais and Bordeaux are twins and Mataro is a sister by blood, as their mothers were embryos we purchased from Ricochet Stock Farms. These two dams have produced 12 marketable offspring for us through the years, as well as putting 2 daughters into our herd. The two top mentionable progeny, a Notorious son – Virginia Esposito whom sold to Brian Miller of Okotoks and a high selling Romano daughter which sold to Kopp Simmentals of Manitoba. These three girls are going to make you money, just like their dams have done for us. Transcon’s Western Harvest Simmental Female Sale

In our first Western Harvest sale, Syrah’s maternal sister sold to good friends – Steve & Tracy Kushnerik (Spruce View Acres) of Camrose country for $15,000. Merlot’s grandmother, MFI Helga 8067 was the high selling cow at the Murray Farms Inc dispersal sale a few years back and sold to Vaughn Gibbons. This is one of the reasons I bought Merlot’s dam from Vaughn. She has turned out to be a very nice cow – we retained her daughter in our herd last year. Merlot, her sister and her dam are all like peas in a pod. We unfortunately had a rough summer last year with pink eye during 2017, so Merlot has a little white dot (scar tissue) in one eye; but that won’t stop her from being a great producer for you. She reminds me very much of her dam, Parview’s Miss Frosty. Frosty may not get extra points in the attractive department but a wise gentleman once told me you need to look beyond the appearance as usually the “ugly” ones produce the best calves. Frosty was a gentle natured cow who was a steady producer with tremendous mothering abilities. I have confidence that Eclipse will go on to produce calves that will push down the scale come weaning time. Bred to Crossroad Radium 789U on March 30th. Preg checked safe to date.

Polled. Starwest Pol Eloquence will be one of our first black consignments that we’ve offered. She is the first calf out of CMS Willow whom we purchased from the 2016 Western Harvest sale where she has gone on to do a tremendous job as a young cow. Willow is smaller framed but she makes up for it with a nice deep rib and a wide hip structure. She just weaned off one of our most impressive bulls in our pen this year. Eloquence has the same structural components as her dam and will be an easy-calver as well as a solid mother. Bred to WHF Limitless B011 April 9th. Preg checked safe to date.

Polled. I am really happy with how the dams of our two black breds turned out. Both were purchased at the 2016 Western Harvest Sale and both have raised, in my opinion, tremendous progeny for first calves. Both are heifers that could be building blocks to any herd. Starwest Easy Girl is slightly larger framed than Eloquence but she too is setting up a nice udder and has a clean front appearance. Bred to WHF Limitless B011 April 9th. Preg checked safe to date.

Echo is one that we started planning her life here at Langer Fleckvieh at a very young age, and then you know, sale season comes and here she is. We agreed to bring six of the top maroon heifers and Harmony sits among them. Looking at her pedigree you can plainly see there is not a long line of Langer Fleckvieh genetics here but she is a great example of what Maroon has done for us. I guess we will take the credit for having the foresight to breed them together as it worked in perfect harmony. Both her sire and dam’s excellent traits run deep in her and it would be very hard to pin point a flaw in this heifer, nicely pigmentated and is build just right. Harmony’s potential is endless. We are really pleased with the influence Bar 5 Willie has had on our herd. We have publicly sold four direct daughters that averaged $8,000.00. Willie is a smooth made bull, with a lot of depth through his middle and hind quarter, and a huge foot. Willie’s dam Raap N Skraap Marda is one of the most influential & productive cows to come out of South Africa. His genetic make up is outcross to most in North America, and I believe Willie is the only son of Wilko in Canada. Electra’s dam Sienna 133S is part of our donor program at 13 years of age. This mating combines two elite females, Marda and Siska. Electra dispalys a soggy long frame with lots of depth. Expect a great udder. We have elected to part with such a wonderful heifer as we have retained her full sister in the herd. Homozygous Polled. I love everything about this heifer. Eloquence is a polled, stylish, feminine type that combines calving ease and performance. The mating of Classified 10A and Brook 8B has been a home run. Brook produced a high selling bull (a full brother) for $14,000 to Swantewitt Simmentals at the Red Deer Bull Sale two years ago. He is proving to be a worry-free calving ease herdsire for them. We also have a full brother this year that will be showcased in the Red Deer bull sale in March. A genetic full sister sold as our high seller in last years Fleckvieh equation sale to Andrews Fleckvieh in the USA. All of us at Eagle Ridge would like to welcome every one to the 5th Annual Western Harvest Bred Heifer Sale. We feel it is a great privilege to showcase our cattle along side some of the best producers of Simmental Genetics Internationally. We have chosen a mini production sale of 5 head of Full Fleckveihs based around our herd-sire “APLX Waylon”, who we purchased from Applecross Simmentals and have been very happy with. The 2 Purebreds are a bit of a Cow Family showcase from one of our oldest and most productive Red blazed purebred cow “Eagle-Ridge Roxanne 60R”. We look forward to seeing all our life long friends at the sale and meeting any new fellow Simmental enthusiasts, and encourage anyone interested in the cattle to contact either Dallas or Dan at any time prior to the sale to set up a coffee date and cow tour. We are wishing all fellow farmers the best of luck for the Fall harvest, and excited to think that when we all meet at the sale in December we can celebrate the Western Harvest together!

Elvira is our Sale feature this year. We think she exemplifies the APLX Waylon 8C cattle very nicely. Even though she is the youngest of our offering this year she is the most balanced, thick and complete of the girls we have brought for your consideration. She has very strong maternal qualities and should be a heavy milking cow thanks to the Anchor T Impact influence. From our past experience, any cows with Impact in their pedigree turn out to be phenomenal productive cows, and excellent herd sire bulls. The temperaments of the Waylon offspring have made it so enjoyable to work with the cattle. We are very excited to offer a new bunch of females out of Waylon to fellow Simmental fans! We have used Waylon extensively on both cows and heifers, and even on a few purebreds and are very happy with the progeny and excited about the future of them. Elvira was bred to BEE Primo on April 5,2018 for a january calf. Exposed to BEE Primo 159E March 25- July 25 Observed bred and confirmed safe by vet on April 5, 2018

Also the Justice offspring have great growth. Everly is the perfect combination of maternal and performance qualities, and we think she will have the same longevity as her Dam has had for us. Being bred early to the Farm Fair 2016 Alberta Supreme Grand Champion Bull “ Harvie Red Summit 54B” is an exciting selling feature for this girl! After consulting with Jay, and with his suggestion that the Western Harvest would be a better option, we decided to bring our very best replacements here. We look forward to presenting them in Innisfail, catching up with all the Western Harvest consignors and visiting with you when you stop by!

Polled. Orphaned at four months of age when mom got into the alfalfa, 1E had a considerable disadvantage to the rest of the heifers. It says a lot about her to see her now. All heifers were exposed to the GSB Red Edwin 56E bull. He is a KS Bravado P68 son out of a first calf heifer (CMS Skyway 330A x Ezillee Red Mack 106H) and weighed 79 lbs. at birth.

On behalf of myself and my husband Steve we would like to welcome you to the Western Harvest Sale. We have admired this sale for many years and are honoured to be asked to join it. We are extremely proud of the four breds we are consigning. All four were top heifers in our keeper pen but we wanted to show a good representation of our herd, so here they are. For this being a severe drought year, they did extremely well and are very easy keeping. Three are direct daughters out of Double Bar D United 176A who created quite a stir a couple of years back selling for $112,000 and the other is a daughter out of Double Bar D Jury 156B, who did the same the following year. All heifers were naturally bred to Virginia’s Mission 338D that we bought a couple of years ago in the Bull Spectrum Sale and was one of the high selling bulls that day. We cannot say enough good things about this bull and I think the combination with the heifers will be a great match. I have to say, Mission has probably been the easiest calving bull we have ever used on heifers. On his first crop of calves he brought the gestation down by 3-9 days, even on cows, so watch them closely! The heifers have been vaccinated with virashield 6+ VLS killed vaccine, Tasvax 8way and Ivomec pour on and will have a first shot of Scour Guard 4KC. They were ultrasound on October 15. Feel free to stop by and see the heifers in person. Coffee is always on. Enjoy the sale!

Transcon’s Western Harvest Simmental Female Sale

Red Velvet was a favorite from the moment she was born. When I first saw her, I knew she would be something special. She wasn’t originally destined to be in any sale and was planned on being retained to enhance my own herd but was substituted in after the breeding season. A nice, deep bodied female, friendly disposition and a good udder are in the works here. A cow family that can raise either heifers or bulls. Being a daughter out of United is the cherry on the top and let me tell you, United is leaving some tremendous heifers in our herd. Bred to Mission, these heifers will be spitting those calves out like chewing gum. Mission’s calves are dark red from head to toe, even on spotted heifers and I have to say, I have had some pretty quiet calves raised here over the years, but his calves are the most docile and easy to work with that I have ever seen and that is a real bonus. Red Velvet would no doubt have been staying at our place for years to come, but we’re proud to showcase her so here she is. Highly unlikely any other heifer offspring from her mother will be sold again. Especially a United daughter. Exposed February 20 - April 22, 2018 to Virginias Mission 338D. Observed bred February 20 and March 26. Preg tested safe to March 26 breeding.

Meet Marishka. I should have named her Pita because she’s a pain in the ass. Don’t take a step back or you may fall over her, but I absolutely love her! But on a serious note, if you were to see Marishka’s full sister her mother Miranda raised this year, you are going to want Marishka. She is incredible. Miranda has raised some really, good bulls that have gone on to good commercial herds, like Les and Chad Hildebrandt’s, and with Marishka being only the second heifer she ever had she will be the only one I sell. If I were to go out on a limb, I would say she is probably my favorite heifer of the ones on offer. Another heifer that came out of the keeper pen that I had plans on taking to the next level, but once again I wanted to showcase our herd and she should do it all. Quick growth, easy keeping, good feet and udders, nice temperament, good mothering. Being bred to Mission, she should bring in the pigmentation like her mother usually does. As far as I’m concerned, Mirishka gets a gold star. I would no doubt buy a daughter of hers in the future. Exposed March 18- April 22, 2018 to Virginias Mission 338A Observed bred March 20, ultrasound safe to that date

Infiniti is a heifer I always admired as a calf, but as she grew the more she got noticed. Not just by me but by visitors to the farm. I think of all the heifers we kept back she improved the most and jumped to the front of the pack by the time weaning came. She is a deep bodied heifer and I think of the 4 on offer has the widest topline. If you were to look at all the offspring of her granddam Mandy and her mother Mindy you would see the consistency in them. They all look identical, no matter who the sire is. The easiest cow family to predict in my herd. I’m really, curious to see Infiniti’s calf as it should be loaded with pigment. Maternal and fertility are strong suits here as well as good udders and feet not to mention docility. As time goes on, I think Infiniti could be a top cow in any herd. Exposed March 18 - April 22 to Virginia’s Mission 338D Vet estimates 6-7 months but probably closer to 6 months.

We absolutely love Bobby-Jo’s dam, Billie-Jean. She is a quiet young cow who just stays in the back of the herd minding her own business and getting the job done. She was one of the high sellers in the Western Harvest sale a couple of years back that we bought from Virginia Ranch with the intent of purchasing another, but when we saw her we really felt she was the one to get. We knew she was going to have a perfect udder and be structurally correct and raise great calves. This is only Billie-Jeans second calf and we feel she did a great job! I think maternal power is in the works here. Bobby Jo is always looking for you to give her a quick scratch on the head. If you are looking for a heifer with the same qualities as her mother and potential to knock them out of the park, Bobby-Jo is for you. Billie-Jean is bred to United this year and we can’t wait! Exposed March 18 - April 22 to Virginia’s Mission 338D Observed bred March 28 Ultrasound to March 28 breeding

Dehorned. Here is another Brewster daughter that is stamped with colour, length of spine and that little bit of extra frame that cattle producers are looking for. Her mother was purchased out of the Fleckvieh Equation sale from our neighbour Ralph Burns of Lazy RS Ranch and goes back to some of their cornerstone cow families including Great Guns Mitzi 11X and Jack Pine Mali 99J.
