HSS grades used in our cutting tools HSS Top Grade Manufactured from HSS, Material 1.3343. Flutes are fully CBN-ground from the hardened material. For very high performance and long tool life. CBN (cubic boron nitride) is a much harder grinding material than conventional abrasives such as silicon carbide or corundum. The use of this harder material results in a smoother cutting action giving the tool sharper and more accurate cutting edges. This grade is used in all conical tube and sheet drills, all multi-step drill bits (with the exception of single flute multi-step drills) and all countersink bits with parallel shanks.
HSS Precision Grade Manufactured from HSS, Material 1.3343. As with the top grade, flutes are fully CBN-ground from the hardened material. In addition, 1 flute laser-engraved with graduations and diameter numbers. For very high performance, long tool life and precision work. This grade is used in virtually all sizes of conical tube and sheet drill and multi-step drill bits.
HSS Cobalt Grade Manufactured from HSS-Co, Material 1.3243. Flutes are fully CBN-ground from the hardened material. For exceptionally heavy duty machining when used on hard-to-machine materials. This grade is used in 90ď‚° countersink bits, slotted countersink bits and spot weld millers.
HSS TiN Grade Manufactured from HSS, Material 1.3343. Flutes are fully CBN-ground from the hardened material. Coated with titanium nitride after grinding. For maximum performance with 5 to 10 times the normal tool life. This grade is used in virtually all sizes of conical tube and sheet drill and multi-step drill bits, in 90ď‚° countersink bits, counterbores, milling bores and spot weld millers.
HSS Standard Grade Manufactured from HSS, Material 1.3343. With milled flutes. For normal machining work. This grade is only used in single flute multi-step drill bits and standard milling bores.
HSS High Performance Grade Manufactured from HSS, Material 1.3343. With milled flutes and ground machining faces. For heavy duty machining work. This grade is used in Morse Taper shank countersink bits, slotted countersink bits and counterbores.

Conical Tube & Sheet Drills
All you need to know about our conical tube sheet metal drill bits 1.
We no longer mill the drill flutes; instead, after hardening, they are fully ground from the solid material. This deep grinding of the flutes is achieved by applying the CBN process, using special machine tools we have designed and manufactured ourselves and by deploying the thoroughly proven DĂ„MO CNC system (also developed and produced by us). This manufacturing process ensures that the cutting edges are considerably more accurate and sharper than is the case with milled drill bits. It also has the effect of significantly increasing the cutting performance and service life of the drill bits.
2.
The shell of the drill bit is also relief-ground on special machine tools, designed and manufactured by us, using the DĂ„MO CNC system. Our special radial relief grinding process guarantees chatter-free drilling.
3.
The tips of the drill bits are also machined on special machine tools, using the DĂ„MO CNC system. The special shape of the tip of the drill bit ensures that, with all drill sizes, the bit does not wander off-centre.
How to use conical sheet metal drill bits 1.
Thoroughly coat the drill bit with drilling paste, not forgetting the flutes. This will significantly increase performance and tool life (drilling paste Ref. 152991).
2.
Mark the position of the hole to be drilled and set the speed of the power drill according to the table at the foot of this page. Position the drill bit on the mark and drill, applying slight pressure at regular intervals.
3.
If drilling large holes in thicker material, it may be necessary to drill a pilot hole beforehand.
4.
Conical Tube & Sheet drills can be reground a number of times. As this is a highly complicated operation, we recommend that the drill bits should be returned to us for regrinding at the factory.

Multi-Step Drills
All you need to know about our Multi-Step drill bits 1.
We no longer mill the drill flutes; instead, after hardening, they are fully ground from the solid material. This deep grinding of the flutes is achieved by applying the CBN process, using special machine tools we have designed and manufactured ourselves and by deploying the thoroughly proven DÄMO CNC system (also developed and produced by us). This manufacturing process ensures that the cutting edges are considerably more accurate and sharper than is the case with milled drill bits. It also has the effect of significantly increasing the cutting performance and service life of the drill bits.
2.
The individual stepped contours of the drill bit are also relief-ground on special machine tools, designed and manufactured by us, using the DÄMO CNC system. Our special radial/axial relief grinding process guarantees chatter-free drilling.
3.
The tips of the drill bits are also machined on special machine tools, using the DÄMO CNC system. The special shape of the tip of the drill bit ensures that, with all drill sizes, the bit does not wander off-centre.
4.
The best results are achieved with the spiral-fluted multi-step drill bits described on pages 16 to 20 of the catalogue. The benefits include improved cutting performance, enhanced tool life, less cutting edge build up, reduced burr formation, quieter machining and lower power requirements.
How to use our Multi-Step drills 1.
Thoroughly coat the drill bit with drilling paste, not forgetting the flutes. This will significantly increase performance and tool life (Drilling paste Ref. 152991).
2.
Mark the position of the hole to be drilled and set the speed of the power drill according to the table at the foot of this page.
3.
Position the drill bit on the mark and drill, applying slight pressure at regular intervals. If drilling large holes in thicker material, it may be necessary to drill a pilot hole beforehand.
4.
There is a radius at the end of each step and this is used to remove burrs from the drilled hole.
5.
Multi step drills can be reground a number of times; however, this reduces the diameter of the steps. As this is a highly complicated operation, we recommend that the drill bits should be returned to us for regrinding at the factory.

Countersinks All you need to know about our countersink bits 1. We no longer mill the drilling flutes of any of our countersink bits with parallel shanks; instead, after hardening, they are fully ground from the solid material. This deep grinding of the flutes is achieved by applying the CBN process, using special machine tools we have designed and manufactured ourselves and by deploying the thoroughly proven DÄMO CNC system (also developed and produced by us). This manufacturing process ensures that the cutting edges are considerably more accurate and sharper than is the case with milled countersink bits. It also has the effect of significantly increasing the cutting performance and service life of the countersinks. 2. The shell of the countersink tip is also relief-ground on special machine tools, designed and manufactured by us, using the DÄMO CNC system. Our special radial relief grinding process guarantees chatter-free drilling.
Important notes on using countersink bits 1. The countersink bits can be used to countersink, counterbore and de-burr in one operation. 2. Always ensure that the countersink bits are thoroughly cooled with cutting oil or our own drilling paste. This increases tool life. (Drilling paste Ref. 152991) 3. The best results are achieved at low cutting speeds and increased forward feed.

Screw Hole Punches Essential information about our Screw Hole Punches 1.
We have developed a special cutter geometry for all sizes of cutter in our round punch range. This cutter geometry ensures an easy start to cutting and smooth rapid punching, even when you use the punch manually with a spanner or a ratchet.
2.
The cutters of both the punch and the die of the round hole punches are taper relieved. This substantially reduces the cutting pressure and the required force.
3.
Our screw hole punches are manufactured from solid in an especially tough tool steel, which gives them a particularly long service life.
4.
Our screw hole punches come in round, square and rectangular, Min-D and special shapes and can be used both by hand and with hydraulic equipment. Hydraulic actuation is necessary for sizes above 45 mm square and 35 x 52 mm rectangular.
Directions for using our Screw Hole Punches 1.
Drill a hole for the bolt at least 1 mm bigger than the bolt diameter. We recommend you use our special size Multi Step drill Ref. 757777 shown on page 11. If the hole is too small the thread will be damaged.
2.
Insert the die with the bolt into the predrilled hole and screw on the punch.
3.
Slowly and evenly tighten the bolt with a spanner, ratchet or hydraulic press.
Important tips for use 1.
Always oil the punch well (prolongs the service life).
2.
Do not punch armour plate (shortens the service life). See the table below for the maximum plate thickness. These can be exceeded, but greater wear of the bolts will result.
3.
Do not punch the hole in one go. Stop tightening when the cutting points on the punch have started to cut into the material. Then undo the bolt and turn the punch through 90O. Now punch through the hole completely. This reduces the cutting pressure and the tensile stress on the bolt.
4.
Use a bolt with ball bearings. This substantially reduces the force required and the frictional resistance.
5.
When punching through thick plate, use the SPECIAL (S) version of the round hole puncher. This has a thicker bolt, which gives a greater cutting capacity. Thicker bolts do not bend or shear so easily. Since the bolt is the weakest point in the hole punch, the basic rule is: the thicker the bolt, the greater the cutting capacity.
6.
All the hole punches can be reground several times. Note, however, that the cutting points on the punches must always be exactly the same height.

TCT Hole Saws
All you need to know about our Tungsten Carbide tipped hole saws 1. Tungsten Carbide tipped hole saws are general-purpose cutting tools and can be used on stainless steel up to 2 mm thick, carbon steels, cast iron, non-ferrous heavy metals and aluminium up to 4 mm thick, as well as on fibreglass, plastics, plaster, light building boards and wood. 2. The guide drill bits of our TCT hole saws are fitted with ejector springs, which ensure that the tungsten carbide teeth do not come into abrupt contact with the material.
How to use TCT hole saws 1. Centre punch the position of the hole and locate the tip of the drill bit on the centre punch mark. Then apply moderate pressure until the centring bit has drilled through the material. 2. When the tungsten carbide teeth come into contact with the material, apply light and consistent pressure as you continue to drill through.
Important notes on using TCT hole saws 1. TCT hole saws are not suitable for use with percussion power drills and should never be used without a centring drill bit. 2. Always ensure that the hole saw does not come into abrupt contact with the material and that it is always aligned horizontally with the material. Always ensure that the power drill is at right angles to the material as otherwise the tungsten carbide teeth may break. 3. Always use coolant/lubricating oil when working with metal. Observe the recommended drilling speeds (see below).
