Royal Liverpool Clubhouse

“There is no better golf spectacle than The Open.” – the favorite Major of PaR nz Golfing Holidays. In 2023 our Open packages with Engravers Hospitality @ Royal Liverpool will also include a week playing golf in St Andrews. This is a special tour taking only 24 golfers! Tempted? Now read on for tour highlights! Omanu Firstly, The 151st Open Royal Liverpool! Rory McIlroy lifted the Claret Jug the last time The Open was held at Royal Liverpool in 2014. The course will stage the Championship for the 13th time in 2023. Built on the racecourse of the Liverpool Hunt Club. Liverpool retained its dual role as a golf course, and race course for its first years of life. Rory McIlroy dominated the 2014 Open at Royal Liverpool and deservedly became Champion Golfer of the Year for the first time. Only an exciting final-day charge from Sergio Garcia (66), with an eagle at the 10th before leaving his ball in a bunker at the 15th, and Rickie Fowler finishing fast for a 67 cut McIlroy’s winning margin to two strokes. Though his overnight six-stroke lead dwindled alarmingly early in the round, he held firm with a steady 71 good enough for a 17-under-par total of 271. McIlroy

became the third Northern Irish winner after Fred Daly, also at Hoylake in 1947, and Darren Clarke (2011). The Royal Liverpool Golf Club links at Hoylake can be beautiful, uplifting, challenging, and even daunting when the wind really blows and the summer rough is deep. The course was created to be a demanding test of golf and remains so, and lies at the very heart of the history and development of the game in Great Britain. Royal Liverpool is the oldest of all the English seaside Clubs with the exception of Westward Ho! in Devon, which was established just a few years earlier. Despite its benign appearance at first sight, Hoylake makes the trickiest demands of a player’s shot selection, distance control and accuracy. The Club celebrated its 150th birthday in 2019, a year which also saw the Walker Cup return to Hoylake, having made its last appearance in 1983. The 2023 Open Tour led by PaR nz Golfing Holidays will include Thursday 20th and Saturday 22nd July Open tickets and hospitality.

And now… the St Andrews Line-Up The history of St Andrews Links goes back to 1552 when John Hamilton was granted a charter to establish a rabbit warren to the north of the links. The St Andrews Links Charter refers to the public ownership of the links and the right of the people of St Andrews to play golf and other games. The right to play golf on the links were subsequently confirmed in local and royal charters. The land was acquired by James Cheape, owner of the adjacent Strathyrum estate in 1821 and sold by his brother’s grandson, also named James Cheape, to The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews in 1893. Control of St Andrews Links was regulated by the St Andrews Links Act of 1894 and St

Andrews Links Order Confirmation Act in 1974 which resulted in the creation of the St Andrews Links Trust. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews is one of the oldest golf clubs in the world. It is a private members-only club based in St Andrews, Scotland. It was previously also known as The R&A, but since 2004 The R&A has been a separate organisation. Until 2004 it was one of the governing authorities of the game, but the new organisation, The R&A was spun off with this function. The club does not own any of the St Andrews Links courses which are golf courses owned by the local authority through the St Andrews Links Trust, and open to the general public.

The Old Course Follow in the footsteps of legends - The oldest and most iconic golf course in the world. The Swilcan Bridge and Hell Bunker are recognised across the globe, yet the greatest feature of the Old Course is that despite its grand status it remains a public golf course, open to all. The Old Course at St Andrews, also known as the Old Lady or the Grand Old Lady, is a public course over common land in St Andrews. Held in trust by the St Andrews Links the c course sits adjacent to the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. The Old Course at St Andrews is considered by many to

be the “home of golf” because the sport was first played on the Links at St Andrews in the early 15th century. Golf was becoming increasingly popular in Scotland until James II of Scotland banned the game in 1457 because he felt that young men were playing too much golf instead of practicing their archery. The ban was upheld by James III and remained in force until 1502, when James IV became a golfer himself and removed the ban. Originally known as the “golfing grounds” of St Andrews, it was not until the New Course was opened in 1895 that it became known as the Old Course.

The New Course The New Course The oldest ‘new’ course in the world, the second course at the Home of Golf was built by the Keeper of the Green, Tom Morris in 1895 and it was imaginatively named to differentiate from its famous neighbour. Boasting undulating fairways and challenging greens, the New Course is a classic test of links golf. At Par 71 and 6,625 yards, with 18 holes, the New Course at St Andrews is often referred to as the world-famous links’ best kept secret. It’s an undulating course similar in character to the Old Course, with driving range facilities in the nearby St Andrews Links Golf Academy.

Were it not for the proximity of its more illustrious and ancient neighbour, many experts feel that the Open Championships – as well as many other major golfing events – would have been fought out here, the world’s oldest and most challenging ‘new’ course. It may be relatively new, but it has an extraordinary reputation for excellence. The layout was based on the traditional out and back routing, and among its most famous features are the shared fairways and a double green at the 3rd and 15th holes.

The Links Trust Clubhouse The Jubilee Course The third championship course at the Home of Golf, the Jubilee is considered by many to be the most challenging course on the famous Links. Built in 1897, the Jubilee course was named after Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, and was originally intended for use by ladies and beginners. However, after seeing its prime golfing location between the New Course and the sea, the Jubilee was converted to a championship layout in 1988. The Jubilee Course has evolved into one of the hardest

courses at St Andrews Links. The course is commonly used to test junior and amateur golfers for the British Mid-Amateur Golf Championship, as well as the St Andrews Links Trophy. Initially a 12-hole course, it was expanded to 18 holes in 1905. The course has seen considerable developments under the management of Willie Auchterlonie, Donald Steel, David Wilson and Graeme Taylor.. The Jubilee is one of several courses in Scotland that are under threat from erosion.

The Eden Course Only slightly more forgiving than its contemporaries on the seaward side of the Links, the Eden Course was built in 1914 by Harry S. Colt whose use of natural boundaries and severe bunkers provides a course full of character.

The Eden Course The Castle Course The newest addition to St Andrews Links, The Castle Course opened in 2008 by HRH Prince Andrew, Duke of York, becoming the seventh course at the Home of Golf and part of the largest public golfing complex in Europe. Set on a rugged cliff-top with spectacular views over St Andrews, The Castle Course offers a memorable golfing experience. The Castle Course delivers an exceptional golfing experience. Golfer magazine nominated the 17th hole Britain’s most spectacular par 3. Located just two miles along the east coast from St Andrews’ town centre, this extraordinarily scenic course is creating a great deal of excitement within the UK golf fraternity. The Castle Course Clubhouse is also well worth a visit, almost as popular as the course itself, with yet more stunning views.
