Creative Writing | English Literature | Film Studies | Media and Communications In English Literature our philosophy is that words matter – we believe that words shape our world and have the power to change it. We are not only interested in the details of the texts we study, but how they interact with and impact on wider issues, debates and movements. York is a great place to study literature – with inspiring events throughout the year enriching your student experience. We are a partner of York Literature Festival, a vibrant annual event which has previously hosted high profile authors such as Margaret Atwood, Michel Faber and Will Self. Staff and students can get involved in these events, and some are hosted on campus. York Centre for Writing, based at the university, is a hub for exciting writing events, projects and publications. By studying Creative Writing as part of the centre you will be collaborating with and
taught by award winning writers. You may even have the opportunity to get your work published. If you study the Working with Words: Publishing and Performance module, you will build valuable, employable skills as you work as a team to edit, design, publish and launch our annual anthology of student work: Beyond the Walls. If you study Film or Media and Communications you will have plenty of opportunities for new experiences. For example, you will be encouraged to get involved with the writing and production of Neutral, our online magazine. Every year you can immerse yourself in the events, screenings and talks which make up the BAFTA qualifying Aesthetica Short Film Festival, and you can take part in national and international field trips to explore your subject in new contexts.
