De la voz propia al libro ilustrado

From Your Own Voice to an Illustrated Book

Taller internacional avanzado on line

International Online Advanced Workshop

As we told you in previous editions, this catalogue you are looking at is the continuation of a project that began in 2018 with two editions of a workshop we called "Our Own Voice", which were an interesting way of discovering our own way of understanding the world graphically.

In both editions, the participants themselves suggested the possibility of a new workshop in which we would work on a real picture book project.

The first thing was to recognise our voice and only then, use it to make our personal project.

And so, this online course was born: "From your own voice to an illustrated book", an international course designed as a natural process to advance step by step and from our own voice in publishing illustration, offering today's professionals the resources, techniques, information and knowledge necessary to create a quality book project that can also have a place in the international publishing market.

From your Own Voice to an Illustrated Book is a project of Laboratorio Emilia de Formación and La Casa Oblicua

In addition, we wanted to enrich the talent of the participants by giving them the greatest possible creative freedom.

Some of the workshop participants already had a personal project in mind that they wanted to produce, others chose to revisit a classic. And we also invited two great writers and friends to our project, Victoria Pérez Escrivá and Eva Manzano, who provided the course participants with eight wonderful texts to work with.

And there was so much interest among the participants that the eight texts were quickly used up. And then the pandemic found us doing this course.

We have already said that the workshop was online, but even so (or perhaps just because of this...) we had scheduled two moments to get to know each other personally and work together for a few days: - The first one was in my studio in Madrid, which did take place. And although not everyone who wanted to could attend it, it was still very interesting and intimate. - The second meeting did not take place. This face-to-face meeting was planned for the 2020 Bologna Fair, to review the finished projects, to see the possible changes in person and also to meet those of us who had not been able to do so before. But as we know, the Fair was postponed and we also extended the course.

We gave ourselves more time to work on the projects and we continued to meet on the new dates of the Bologna Fair, which in the end did not take place that year. And we all lived through this strange period, as if suspended in time.

The whole cultural industry went to a standstill. So, we decided that we would launch the catalogue when the publishing activity returned to normal. And because of this, and because we believe it is also a bit of poetic justice that life sometimes gives us, we have decided to present this catalogue, and its wonderful results, at this moment, two years later. Just when everything is starting again.

Thanks to all the participants of the workshop for their immense passion, hard work and contributions, which gave us constant support, guidance and motivation throughout the process. And something else to add: in these two years of pandemic, some of these projects have already been published or have won important awards, which has made us almost as happy as the authors themselves.

And finally, I leave you with the projects of these artists, all of whom are now friends of ours. We are proud of all of them, of their evolution and their generous effort.

Un abrazo. ¡Nos vemos en la Feria! 6

When I was crazy Serena Carella

Writer Luigi Pirandello Summary Novel belonging to the corpus "Novelle per un anno", was published for the first time in 1902. It is the story of Fausto Bandini, a sharp middle-aged man who presents himself saying that he is now sane but until a few years before he was crazy. It quickly becomes clear that what he calls "madness" is nothing more than the judgment of others on his way of looking at the world: empathetic, generous and in strong connection with nature, which often becomes the mirror of his inner world. Being healthy, on the contrary, means having a dull and selfish mentality. Fausto lives in a constant but apparent conflict between these two realities.

Serena Carella was born in Naples, Italy, in 1974. I am an architect but in the last two or three years I have started to dedicate all my free time to drawing. At first it was a fun pastime, then, with the courses of Laboratorio Emilia and Javier Zabala, drawing became a daily need for me and I wanted to go further, until this book: the first time I experimented, researched, explored, clashing with my inexperience and its limits, strongly wishing to overcome them. Before these courses, in 2018 I participated in a competition ('That's a Mole') in the city of Turin, to create a symbolic image of the Mole Antonelliana, in which I was selected as a finalist.

Valeria Cavallini was born in 1988, in the foggy and flat Emilian countryside. I've always loved books, stories and brushes, so I graduated in Illustration at Bologna's Fine Art's Academy. I'am deeply interested in each element that participate to compose the narration: besides illustration, I also write stories and realize hand-printed and bound books. I'am currently studying at Bottega Finzioni, a specializing school in writing and screenplaying.

Why not?

WHY NOT?

Lisa Gelli

Writer Eva Manzano Summary The simple idea from which I started for everything is the famous concept of the glass half empty and half full, in history I felt this, nothing is impossible if you look at the glass half full! That's why one of the characters that seem impossible, the pirate siren, becomes the protagonist of the story. The story is a bit "cyclical", there are phrases that repeat themselves, phrases that say "why not" period. I thought of inserting total black pages to emphasize these negativity passages and, in the same time I used my strong pictorial sign to value the half full glass found in this darkness. I was surprised to have already done most of the work in the study phase, I found here my glass half full!

Carol Isern Omar Kheyyam

Summary Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám is the title that Edward FitzGerald gave to his 1859 translation from Persian to English of a selection of quatrains (rubāʿiyāt) attributed to the persian poet Omar Khayyam (1048–1131). This selection of 29 rubaiyat offers a distilled view of the author's main themes. The fundamental allegorical figure in the poems is wine. The quatrains are a thread of small reflections on the futility of life, human ignorance, the importance of love and the celebration of life, the benefits of drunkenness and the joy of eroticism. Khayyam has had a spiritual interpretation in the East, close to the sufism of the time, while the West has read his poemas as a gnostic celebration of life.

Y fue el amor.

Eli Landa was born in San Sebastián (Spain) in 1965 and I live in El Salvador almost 30 years ago. I studied a Master in International Cooperation for Development and a Master in Children Books Illustration (i con i, 2008). I combine both interests and sometimes they come together when working to promote rights in favor of vulnerable populations. I am the author of several illustrated books as the author of texts, illustrations or both of them. So far, nine of them have been published. I am also involved in promoting Literature for Children and Youth people in El Salvador and Central America.

Rinaldo's voice Hedie Meischke

Writer Hedie Meischke Summary Four brothers and a big black horse: an image from an old Flemish folktale that was stuck in my head. But that is just the setting. The story is about an introvert, dreamy child in a loud, opiniated family. Horse is the wisest, the caretaker. The brothers are noisy, each in his own way. They are not bad, they want to help Rinaldo. Each in his own way. Rinaldo is trying to fit in, but he misses an inner connection. Luckily, there is a place where it is quiet and full of beauty, where he can hear his own heart. It’s called nature. And with the help of Horse the brothers realize that Rinaldo is just fine the way he is. Actually, he is great.

Hedie Meischke, grew up in The Hague (Netherlands), where I studied at the Royal Academy of Arts. I did projects for the Children’s Library, such as designing posters, flyers and booklets. When I moved to the countryside I became an illustrator of nature magazines and also worked as a translator/subtitler. Now I hope to make picture books, because that has been my true love from childhood on. For Rinaldo’s Voice I got a honorable mention in the Picture This! Contest. To make art I need to feel a connection with my subject and I am always very happy when someone else is touched by what I’ve made. I like to keep it light, but with a deeper layer. And always full of hope and humor. I mix all sorts of media: stencil technique, collage, stamping, charcoal, pastel, ink, paint. I have an antique cupboard that is decorated with very old wallpaper. It’s slowly coming off in flaps, hanging down like a torn curtain. It’s on every page of the Rinaldo book.

Writer Eva Manzano Summary There was a bed in a railway station. Not that it was common for beds to come out there, because they used to be very reserved. They normally ate fluff and spent most of their lives in one place. But some had reached the university. This bed did not want to go very far, because she liked her home. Farewells The Child Born With Wings Ermelinda Nuzzarello Writer Victoria Pérez Escriva Summary The story of the child born with wings tells us of the need to explore beyond the limits we find in our family environment, beyond its prophecies, its fears and often its limiting beliefs. The wings are the symbol of this ability of children to explore beyond these boundaries, to grow, to overcome their parents and their fears. But often society and their own loved ones do not accept this way of life, requiring it to adapt to conventions. The delicate story of Victoria Pérez Escrivá, caresses the limit between family loyalty and personal freedom, in search of a balance between affection and self-determination.

Ermelinda Nuzzarello, graduated in 2004 in Set Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Catania, I worked as set designer, cultural animator, acrobatic dressmaker and toy maker. In 2013, inspired by the need to experiment new forms of expression, I moved my first steps between image and narration, as a self-taught illustrator, attending courses and workshops. I collaborate with associations and develop personal projects, participating in collective and individual exhibitions. In 2015 and 2017 I was a finalist at the 8th and 10th International Meeting of Illustration in S. João da Madeira, Portugal. I mix inks, acrylics, collages, watercolors, pastels, graphite and not disdain coffee, turmeric, chocolate, walks in busy and solitary places. I research, through my work, the possibility of creating visual resonance boxes, freeing imaginary worlds to explore individually and collectively spaces of emotional expansion.

Grandma Spider Illustrated Alphabet María José Pita

LA ABUELA ARAÑA Abecedario ilustrado

Writer María José Pita Summary The illustration that gives rise to this book was selected for the catalog Your Own Voice 1. Two years later, María furthered her graphic research using India ink spots, color and monotype. Grandma Spider becomes a character and accompanies her in the challenge of weaving a story through an illustrated alphabet. This ABC transcends the idea of a merely informative book and, surrounded by a non-sense atmosphere, describes the creative impulse of an artist, a child, or a Grandma Spider at play. A poetic and "brave" book, in Javier's words, open enough to reach an audience from 0 to 100 years old.

The Holy Land Lesley Erica Smith

Writer Alda Merini Summary I started this project intending to illustrate various poems by the Italian Poetess Alda Merini. I started with La Terra Santa but it became evident to me that this was more than just a single poem, it was a story in itself, and so the book became La Terra Santa. The poem was written during a traumatic period when Alda Merini was in a mental institution. There are many metaphoric allusions to the Holy Land from the Bible. There is one reference where she describes the mass of inmates as birds scurrying towards the Mass. From here I was inspired to create the personalities in the form of birds for my illustrations. I hope that I have expressed the sentiments of this beautiful poem.

Lesley Erica Smith, I am British born, London 1965, but have been living in Tuscany, Italy for 17 years. I have an 11 year old son and my main business here has been working with tourists who come to the area. I have no formal art training, although I have attended various workshops around the world for photography, which has been my artistic outlet and second profession since I was a teenager. I have always loved dabbling in various other art forms throughout the years. I was drawn towards illustration since early 2019, following the online course Your Own Voice with Javier in early 2019. As a complete beginner to illustrations and bookmaking it was a long hard process but I am proud of what I accomplished.

Hansel and Gretel Denise Teixeira

Writer Brothers Grimm Summary Hansel and Gretel is a German fairy tale collected for the first time by the Grimm brothers. In the story the two brothers are left in the forest to die by their own parents because they didn't have enough food for everyone. When they try to leave the forest they find a house made of candies or at least that's what they thought, but in fact it was the house of a very bad witch who wanted to eat them. More than a children's story, the tale speaks of our darkest fears, it speaks of scarcity, lack of love, lack of perspective and hunger. To survive, Hansel and Gretel need to support each other, kill their fears and get out of the forest. Will they still be the same after that as before?

Corine Teuben is an illustrator and graphic designer who lives and works in Utrecht. Illustration is for her an inspiring and expressive way of telling feelings, emotions and stories, by playing with different techniques, textures and materials. Corine is inspired by daily subjects and stories in life. Precisely those things, details, emotions, rituals and forms are so ordinary, but often so indispensable, present in everyday life. After graduating from the HKU University of the Arts Utrecht in graphic design, she worked for a number of years as a graphic designer for a design agency and publishing house specialized in book designs about artists, for art historians and museums. After that she worked as an independent illustrator and graphic designer, which she still does today. She describes her work as poetic, narrative, conceptual, sensitive and powerful.

But when Narcissus touched the lips, the enchanting face fell apart into moving wrinkles. And he touched nothing but the cold water of the mountain lake. “Don’t move, beautiful boy,” stay with me. I give you my heart, Narcissus whispered. And he wanted to stroke the boy’s soft cheek, 36 | 36

The Kiss Margriet van Noort

Writer Anton Chekhov Summary One evening in May, a group of officers is invited for dinner at the house of a retired general. During that evening the shy officer Rabovich strays into a dark room where, by mistake, an unrecognizable woman gives him a passionate kiss. And with this kiss, Rabovich immediately starts fantasizing romantically about the beauty and identity of this woman. The next day the officers leave the area and over time these vibrant fantasies start to dominate Rabovich’s life. In late August he returns to the house, which looks dark and deserted, with rough towels hanging at the bathing’s cabin. Suddenly Rabovich realizes that his fantasies were false and his hope turns to bitterness about his fate. When the general’s invitation comes, he refuses.

Margriet van Noort was born in the Netherlands (1961) where she studied Interior Design in Amsterdam. Since 2008 she has made illustrations for several children’s picture books as well as for television and magazines. She gets inspired by many things, but mostly by observing characters of people and animals and how they go through their day to day life. This fascination brought her to the work of Chekhov, of whom she became a great admirer. It was therefore a challenging and exciting choice for Margriet to illustrate Chekhov's short story "The Kiss" for this project and create an illustrated album for adults. Margriet works with mixed media techniques on paper but has a strong preference for applying the stencil technique, which she occasionally enriches with broken ink lines. Sometimes in a nonchalant way but also with a more controlled use of the stencil technique she creates graphical, narrative compositions and expressive characters.

The eagle that did not want to fly David Yerga Writer James Aggrey Summary The eagle that did not want to fly is a beautiful parable of human existence, individual and collective, when it is limited by the expectations of the environment and that can be applied to a wide variety of personal, social and historical situations. The author of the text is James Aggrey, a writer from Ghana who died in 1927. The story tells of an eagle captured by a man when he was a baby and locked in a chicken coop. For five years he lived with the chickens until he came to believe one of them and forgot what constitutes the most intimate of his essence, among other customs, that of flight.
