Há cinco anos consecutivos, duas vezes por ano, levamos este projecto editorial até aos nossos hóspedes, mais de três milhões de leitores espalhados pelo Mundo. Para comemorar, nesta edição prestamos homenagem a um destino invicto: a bela cidade do Porto. Com uma incrível oferta cultural e patrimonial, a capital do Norte está a atrair cada vez mais turistas, rendidos à autenticidade das suas gentes e à forma calorosa como sabem receber. Um bom exemplo desta maneira de ser encontra-se no novo Pestana Vintage Porto na emblemática zona da Ribeira e cujo projecto respeita o entorno e a arquitectura local. It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the tenth edition of WINK. Twice a year, for five consecutive years, we have been bringing this editorial project to our guests, over three million readers spread across the world. To celebrate, in this issue we pay tribute to an undefeated destination: the beautiful city of Porto. With incredible culture and heritage, the capital of the north is attracting increasingly more tourists, surrendered to the genuineness of its people and the warm way they welcome visitors. A good example of this can now be found at the new Pestana Vintage Porto, in the emblematic area of Ribeira, a project that respects the surroundings and the local architecture. If you are planning a visit to Porto, be sure to keep the detachable guide we have prepared especially for you which will lead you to some of the city’s best kept secrets. From the north of Portugal, we head to South Beach without leaving Portugal. One of the group’s latest investments is in the Algarve, Alvor, where the beaches are a temptation throughout the year. I speak of the new Pestana Alvor South Beach, located at one of Portugal’s most beautiful beaches and just a few metres from the sea. Mario Testino é um dos mais influentes fotógrafos do mundo. Nascido em Lima, Peru, mudou-se para Londres em 1976 onde começou a sua carreira. O seu trabalho tem estado em destaque em revistas, desde a Vogue à Vanity Fair, e em campanhas publicitárias de sucesso das grandes casas de moda e beleza como a Burberry, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Lancôme e Michael Kors. Testino é também um reconhecido retratista de atores, realeza e outras celebridades. As suas fotografias têm sido expostas em museus e galerias um pouco por todo o mundo, incluindo a The National Portrait Gallery em Londres, o Museu Thyssen-Bornemisza em Madrid, o Shanghai Art Museum, o Museum of Fine Arts em Boston e o Seoul Arts Center. Publicou 15 livros, entre eles o MaRIO DE JANEIRO Testino, Kate Moss by Mario Testino, Private View e In Your Face. Testino recebeu a Medalha Tiradentes do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, a Grande Cruz da Ordem de Mérito no Peru e a Ordem do Império Britânico em reconhecimento dos seus serviços à fotografia e à caridade. Em 2012, criou o MATE - Museu Mario Testino, uma instituição sem fins lucrativos criada para contribuir para a criação e promoção da cultura e património no Perú. Encontrámo-lo no Porto enquanto fotografava o editorial da Vogue America.

Mario Testino is one of the world’s most influential photographers. Born in Lima, Peru, he moved to London in 1976, where he began his career. His work has been featured in magazines from Vogue to Vanity Fair and in successful advertising campaigns for leading fashion and beauty houses such as Burberry, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Lancôme and Michael Kors. Testino is also a noted portrait photographer of actors, royalty and other celebrities. His photographs have been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, including The National Portrait Gallery in London, the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, the Shanghai Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Seoul Arts Center. He has published 15 books, including MaRIO DE JANEIRO Testino, Kate Moss by Mario Testino, Private View, and In Your Face. Testino has received the Medalha Tiradentes from the state of Rio de Janeiro, the Grand Cross Order of Merit from Peru and the Order of the British Empire in recognition of his services to photography and charity. In 2012, he established MATE – Museo Mario Testino, a non-profit institution established to contribute to Peru through the cultivation and promotion of culture and heritage. We met him in Porto while he was shooting an editorial for Vogue America.

Qual é a primeira coisa que faz quando chega a um quarto de hotel? Tudo depende de como me sinto. Posso querer relaxar um pouco e habituar-me ao novo contexto, mas a maioria das vezes quero fazer alguma coisa ou explorar, especialmente se for um sítio onde nunca estive.

What’s the first thing you do when you reach a hotel room? It all depends on how I feel. I may want to relax a bit and get used to my new surroundings, but most of the time I'll want to do something or explore, especially if it's somewhere I've never been before. How many passports do you have? Two. Peruvian and Italian.

Where did you spend your first holiday with your parents? My first holiday outside of Peru with my parents was to New York. I do remember the first time I went to Rio de Janeiro on holiday with my family too, when I was a teenager. It made a lasting impact on my life and I have been going back there ever since.

Onde foram as suas primeiras férias com os seus pais? As minhas primeiras férias fora do Peru com os meus pais foram em Nova Iorque. Recordo-me da primeira vez que fui ao Rio de Janeiro com a minha família também, quando era adolescente. Isso teve um enorme impacto na minha vida, tanto que, desde então, volto sempre lá.

When you’re packing, what’s the first thing you put in your case? Sometimes I might be on a trip that takes me from a warm climate to a cold climate and back to a warm climate, so having a functional wardrobe is essential. It's not unusual that I have a pair of swimming trunks and a winter scarf in the same case. I guess I always pack my travel pillow though. A few years ago I had these beautiful travel pillows made in a luxury linen and wrapped in a smooth navy suede travel bag. I gave them to my close friends as Christmas gifts. Comfort is important, especially for me as I travel a lot. I sort of have an order to packing. Shoes in their bags first, then toiletries. Socks and underwear next, then t-shirts, sports clothes, sweaters – all the soft things first. Then shirts, trousers and on top suits.

Eu saí do Peru há mais de 30 anos, mas será sempre a minha casa. Tenho muito orgulho e apoio o meu país, por isso quando aterro em Lima isso faz-me sentir em casa. Na verdade sinto-me em casa para onde quer que viaje porque viajo com a minha equipa, e quase todos são meus amigos.

Where in the world have you felt happiest? I have felt happy in numerous places. For me it's about the people you are with and the experiences you share. I am so fortunate that I have many special people in my life, who reside all over the world. Whenever I see them it's always happy. Being in Rio is also one of my happiest moments.

Em que parte do mundo já se sentiu mais feliz? Senti-me feliz em inúmeros sítios. Para mim são mais importantes as pessoas com quem estás e as experiências que partilhas. Sou um sortudo porque tenho muitas pessoas especiais na minha vida por esse mundo fora. Sempre que os vejo fico feliz. Estar no Rio é sempre um dos momentos mais felizes.

Describe the most beautiful landscape that you remember seeing. Oh! Impossible to say! There is so much beauty in this world and I have seen a lot of it and hope to keep seeing and discovering more. Sometimes beautiful landscapes are not just about the physical but also about the energy a place has. The landscape of London can be just as beautiful, in its own way, as the sunset in Ipanema, because of the energy the place has. One might not consider that on a rainy day in London, but I feel it has a beauty even then. You have to be open to these things, as the beauty of a place is deeper than just what you see. Sometimes it’s also best to see a place from the skies!

Às vezes as paisagens bonitas não são apenas o físico mas também a energia que o sítio tem. Increasingly more people are succumbing to the many charms and uniqueness of the capital of the north of Portugal. Our special guest Emmy Urban was no exception and accepted our invitation to explore the heart of Porto, known in history as the Invicta, the city that was never defeated. We lose ourselves, however, when it comes to the picturesque Ribeira overlooking the famous wine cellars and the Dom Luis Bridge, full of narrow alleyways and typical houses with colourful façades, which have resisted time and take us back to the past. The temptation to set off and explore is irresistible, which is precisely what do we do immediately after checking in at the amazing Pestana Vintage Porto, directly overlooking the Douro.

Por fora nem nos apercebemos, mas na realidade o Pestana Vintage é um conjunto de seis prédios históricos, que remontam aos séculos XVI, XVII e XVIII, e cuja recuperação é de louvar. Mário Candeias, diretor de operações dos Hotéis Pestana Collection, defende que esta recuperação é reflexo do enorme respeito que o grupo tem pelo Património Mundial da Humanidade e que o conceito vintage do hotel está a atrair sobretudo a geração Y. É fácil entender tanto sucesso. A excelente localização permite umas férias sem carro, a vista é deslumbrante, o serviço é cuidado e muito descontraído e a decoração apresenta autênticas jóias do design português. Destaque para as cadeiras originais desenhadas pelo arquitecto Fernando Távora, a evocar os anos 50, que se misturam com ilustrações contemporâneas e reinterpretações retro de polaroids. Esta filosofia retro estende-se por todo o hotel, incluindo cada um dos 109 quartos disponíveis. A tentação de ficar pelo hotel pode ser grande, dado o conforto e as vistas em cada recanto, mas maior é o desejo de correr as ruelas de granito que desenham o centro histórico da cidade.

From the outside you can’t really tell but the Pestana Vintage is in fact a set of six historic buildings, dating back to the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, which has undergone commendable restoration work. Mario Candeias, Chief Operating Officer of the Pestana Hotels Collection, explains that this recovery reflects the enormous respect that the group has for World Heritage Sites and that the hotel’s vintage concept hotel is mainly attracting Generation Y. It’s easy to understand why it’s so successful. The excellent location means there’s no need for a car, the view is stunning and the service is attentive and very relaxed. The decor features true gems of Portuguese design, in particular, the original chairs designed by the architect Fernando Tavora that evoke the 50s, blending with the contemporary illustrations and retro reinterpretations of Polaroid’s. This retro philosophy extends throughout the hotel, including in each of the 109 rooms available. You may be greatly tempted to stay in, at the hotel, given its comfort and the views from each of its corners, but even greater is the desire to roam the granite alleyways of the city’s historical centre.

Lose yourself on a tour without any mandatory itineraries, dominated by steps, backstreets and alleys that are far from the usual tourist traps and where you are constantly being surprised. There are so many points of interest surrounding the hotel that whatever direction you choose to follow, you will come across treasures such as the La Paz shop, a former 19th century pharmacy that has been recovered to host the prestigious menswear brand by the designers André Teixeira and José Miguel Abreu. The meticulously restored interior wood and wrought iron windows are commonplace in the small shops scattered throughout the city and are fortunately being restored. In addition to the shops, several monuments and cafes reflect Porto’s economic and intellectual wealth. Starting at the Ribeira you can easily walk on foot to the Stock Exchange Palace, the Sé Cathedral and the emblematic Clerics Tower. Built in 1754 in Baroque style, the Clerics Tower was then the tallest building in Portugal, with six storeys and 75 metres high. If you decided to climb the 240 steps that lead to the top, then it’s best to relax a little afterwards at one of the historic cafes, often linked to the tradition of literary gatherings, such as the Majestic, a masterpiece of new art on Rua de Santa Catarina. In 2011 it was considered the sixth most beautiful cafe in the world.

Os pontos de interesse que rodeiam o hotel são tantos, que siga por onde seguir vai descobrir pérolas como a loja La Paz. Uma antiga farmácia do século XIX que foi recuperada para acolher a conceituada marca de roupa masculina dos designers André Teixeira e José Miguel Abreu. Os interiores de madeira meticulosamente recuperados e as montras de ferro forjado são uma constante nas pequenas lojas espalhados pela cidade e que felizmente estão a ser recuperadas. Além das lojas, vários monumentos e cafés atestam a riqueza económica e intelectual do Porto. Partindo da Ribeira poderá caminhar facilmente a pé até ao Palácio da Bolsa, à Sé Catedral e à emblemática Torre dos Clérigos. Construída em 1754 no estilo barroco, a Torre dos Clérigos era na altura o edifício mais alto em Portugal, com os seus seis andares e 75 metros de altura. Mas para conhecer a história da Casa Leitão é preciso recuar até ao Porto do final do século XVIII e a uma loja-oficina da Rua das Flores, onde filigrana, corações de Viana, cordões e medalhões eram trabalhados à vista do freguês. No final do século XIX estabeleceu-se em Lisboa, no então operário Bairro Alto, onde permanece – hoje, uma moderna oficina de ourives, a mais antiga em funcionamento em Portugal. Aqui combinam-se saberes ancestrais, guardados na memória que anima as mãos dos mestres artífices, numa relação intensa entre criador e a sua obra. Jewelers of kings and queens, their pieces were designed by great artists and can be found all around the world. But to get acquainted with the history of Casa Leitão it is necessary to turn the clock back to the Oporto of late eighteenth century and a shop-workshop in Rua das Flores, where filigree, Viana hearts, necklaces and medallions were worked on right there in front of the customer. In the late nineteenth century it settled in Lisbon, in the Bairro Alto neighbourhood, where today you will find a modern goldsmith workshop, the oldest operating in Portugal. Here we have a merger of ancestral knowledge, stored in the memory that stimulates the hands of master craftsmen, in an intense relationship between the creator and his work.

A chegada do Pestana Hotel Group a Nova Iorque serviu de pretexto para uma conversa com o homem que está por trás da internacionalização da marca. José Roquette tem 48 anos e há duas décadas que se dedica ao ambicioso plano que pretende colocar os hotéis Pestana nos mais importantes mercados do mundo. Numa conversa informal, no meio das obras de mais um hotel em Lisboa, José Roquette revela-nos os desafios de ser CDO mas também o sabor das conquistas.

The Pestana Hotel Group’s arrival in New York served as an excuse to talk to the man behind the brand’s international expansion. José Roquette is 48 years old and for two decades he has been dedicated to the ambitious plan that aims to place Pestana hotels in all of the major world markets. During an informal chat, amid the works being carried out on yet another hotel in Lisbon, José Roquette reveals the challenges of being the Chief Development Officer but also the flavour of achievements.

José Roquette may well say that hospitality runs in his veins as he’s the son of an entrepreneur responsible for various tourism projects. He usually jokes saying that he "was born in the middle of construction works," but in fact it may well have been there that this adventure began, creating spaces for welcoming guests. With a degree in Business Management, it was in venture capital that his career began and lasted until 1995, when the venture capital fund he worked for supported the start of the Pestana Group’s international expansion, with the opening of the first hotel in Mozambique. Roquette admits that although Dionísio Pestana was not as well-known at the time, he already had a long-term vision that caught his eye. Not before long, he was invited to join the group as a director and move to Mozambique, where he stayed for three years. The following destination was Brazil, where he lived for four years and where he was awarded the Entrepreneur of the Year Award in Hospitality. This briefly summarises the start of the group's international expansion, just two decades ago. Currently the brand is already present in 16 countries with 86 hotels and 12 new projects already underway, specifically on Rua do Comércio in Lisbon, in Funchal in partnership with Cristiano Ronaldo, Marrakech, Madrid, Amsterdam, New York and Barra da Tijuca in Rio de Janeiro, among others.

José Roquette bem pode dizer que a hospitalidade lhe está no sangue, ou não fosse ele filho de um empreendedor responsável por vários projetos turísticos. Costuma dizer a brincar que “nasceu no meio de obras”, mas na verdade pode ter sido aí que começou esta aventura de criar espaços para receber hóspedes. Licenciado em Gestão de Empresas foi no capital de risco que começou a sua carreira. Até que em 1995, o fundo de capital de risco para o qual trabalhava apoiou o início da internacionalização do Grupo Pestana, com a abertura do primeiro hotel em Moçambique. Roquette admite que, apesar de Dionísio Pestana não ter a atual projeção, já na altura a sua visão a longo prazo lhe despertou a atenção. Passado pouco tempo estava a ser convidado a entrar no grupo como administrador e a mudar-se para Moçambique, onde ficaria por três anos. O destino a seguir foi o Brasil, onde morou durante quatro anos e onde foi distinguido com o Prémio de Empreendedor do Ano na Hotelaria. Assim se conta resumidamente o início da internacionalização do grupo há apenas duas décadas. Neste momento a marca está já presente em 16 países com 87 hotéis. E 12 novos projetos já estão em curso, nomeadamente na Rua do Comércio em Lisboa, Funchal, numa parceria com Cristiano Ronaldo, Marraquexe, Madrid, Amesterdão, Nova Iorque ou Barra da Tijuca, entre outros. 43

The much-awaited arrival in New York, one of the most soughtafter markets in the world, is clearly one of José Roquette’s and the Pestana Group’s great achievements, reinforcing their presence in the United States. But there are other projects with a special flavour, such as the five-star hotel to be born at the Plaza Mayor in Madrid. The group, already present in Barcelona, had been looking for a good opportunity in Madrid to expand in Spain, but it wasn’t easy. Persistence paid-off and the group won the much disputed concession to convert the Casa de la Carnicería into a luxury hotel. Being aware of opportunities is crucial for a Chief Development Officer, but one must not lose focus of the long-term objectives, warns José Roquette. Furthermore, it’s all about building trust, responding quickly, making shrewd choices and having a great ability to separate the wheat from the chaff. He says it takes flexibility, strategic vision and passion, when it comes to making the decision and spending your life asking "why?” just as the group’s leader, Dionísio Pestana does. Given the responsibility of a CDO, the presence of pressure is undeniable, but Roquette has learned to defend himself. A thorough analysis of each project, working with the best consultants in each market, crossing and confirming information as well as learning from past mistakes help to significantly reduce the pressure when it comes to decision-making. Sports, and especially surfing help him escape from this pressure and to combat the lack of routine experienced by someone who spends a third of his life travelling the world. This doesn’t appear to wear him out however, quite to the contrary. Hearing him talk about the future, including consolidation in South America, a stronger presence in European capitals, the likely expansion to the United States and the need to focus on innovation and human resources within the group, makes you realize that José Roquette is passionate about what he does and that he has been in the right place for the past 20 years.

A persistência deu frutos e o grupo conseguiu a disputada concessão para converter a Casa de la Carnicería num hotel de luxo. Estar atento às oportunidades é determinante para um Chief Development Officer, mas é preciso nunca desfocar do rumo traçado a longo prazo, alerta José Roquette. Além disso, há que criar relações de confiança, ser rápido nas respostas, perspicaz nas escolhas e ter uma enorme capacidade de separar o trigo do joio. Diz ser preciso flexibilidade, visão estratégica, conseguir por de lado a paixão na hora da decisão e passar a vida a perguntar “Porquê?”, tal como faz o líder do grupo, Dionísio Pestana. Dada a responsabilidade de um CDO é inegável a presença de pressões, mas Roquette já aprendeu a defenderse. Uma análise profunda de cada projeto, trabalhar com os melhores consultores de cada mercado, cruzar e confirmar opiniões, além de aprender com os erros do passado, ajudam a reduzir significativamente a pressão na hora de decidir. Fora do âmbito profissional o desporto, nomeadamente o surf é o seu escape para estas pressões e para combater a falta de rotina de alguém que passa um terço da sua vida a viajar pelo mundo. Mas isso parece não o desgastar, muito pelo contrário. Basta ouvi-lo falar no futuro, que passa pela consolidação na América do Sul, uma presença mais forte nas capitais europeias, a provável expansão nos Estados Unidos, a necessidade de apostar na inovação e nos recursos humanos dentro do grupo para perceber que José Roquette é um apaixonado pelo que faz e que, há 20 anos, está no lugar certo.

A confiança, que não tenho quase em ninguém e muito menos nos padres. O que é para si a felicidade? Diz-me muito pouca coisa. Uma ideia de infelicidade? Já não me preocupo com isso. O que é que defende? Defendo-me a mim mesmo, mas se vir uma mulher bonita a ser maltratada corro para a defender. O que é para si a liberdade? É a coisa mais bonita e eu sou livre até de mim mesmo. Qual seria uma morte perfeita? Ir a andar na rua e sentar-me. Se fosse outra pessoa, quem gostaria de ser? Eu. Quais são os seus prazeres favoritos? Sentar-me a uma mesa, comer, acordar e dormir. Onde gostaria de ter vivido? Em França. Qual o seu herói? O Tridente que nunca me deixou ficar mal. Um ódio de estimação? I defend myself but if I see a beautiful woman being mistreated I run to her defence. What is your idea of freedom? It is the most beautiful thing and I am even free of myself. What would be a perfect death? To be walking down the street and then sitting down. If you could be someone else who would it be? Myself. What are your favourite pleasures? Sitting at table, eating, waking up and sleeping. Where would you have liked to have lived? In France. Who is your hero? Tridente, who has never let me down. A pet hate? Half a dozen of them… What natural talent would you like to have, which you don’t? To be a princess’ bodyguard. What is your motto in life? It’s a very practical one: fend for myself and survive.

A longa barba branca, os olhos azul-mar e a postura relaxada de encarar a vida trouxeram-lhe o estatuto de modelo aos 77 anos. Joaquim Pereira, ou Sr. Pereira como todos o tratam, é natural de Rio Tinto, Gondomar, e costuma dizer que nasceu a envernizar móveis, sendo as memórias do restauro de pianos as que lhe trazem mais brilho ao olhar. Mas quis a vida que a música fosse outra e entre 1969 e 1971 viveu os horrores da Guerra Colonial em Moçambique. Os tempos modernos, com a filosofia do descartável, tornaram-lhe a profissão não rentável, o que o levou a dedicar-se à venda de artesanato, ocupação que ainda mantém e que concilia com as pescarias entre amigos e com a aventura de ser modelo. É a cara da La Paz, uma conceituada marca de roupa masculina portuense, e foi um dos modelos escolhidos por Mario Testino para o editorial Vogue America realizado no Porto.

The long white beard, the sea-blue eyes and his relaxed attitude towards life made him a model at the age of 77. Joaquim Pereira or Mr. Pereira, as he is known as, was born in Rio Tinto, Gondomar always says that he was born varnishing furniture, with the memories of restoring pianos being what really make his eyes shine. But life had something else in store for him and between 1969 and 1971 he lived the horrors of the Colonial War in Mozambique. Modern-day times and the throw-away society, meant that this profession was no longer profitable, leading him dedicate his life to handicrafts, a job he continues to do, reconciling it with fishing among friends and his latest modelling adventure. He is the face of La Paz, a well-known brand of male clothing from Porto and was one of the models chosen by Mario Testino for the US Vogue editorial recently shot in Porto.
