La Casita inaugurates its yearly fall exhibition Balcón Criollo, to kick off National Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM). This year’s theme: “Béisbol at the Heart of Our Latino Communities,” will explore the vital role of the national pastime, baseball, in Latino culture.
The 2015 gallery-wide installation, inspired by the work of Puerto Rican artist Pepón Osorio, will include baseball memorabilia and a significant collection of photographs and video that relate the experiences of real-life everyday heroes in our communities: dedicated coaches, parents, youths and Little League stars. The exhibit runs through December 12, 2015.
This project was documented and curated by La Casita’s own team of collaborators led by Luz Encarnación (community liaison); Marilú López Fretts (artist, photographer and videographer), and Herve Yves Comeau (collection catalog).
This event is part of a new, multi-year initiative between La Casita and the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History.
