Cuba en La Casita

FALL, 2018 – SPRING 2019

Directly from the margins, a collective of young Cuban artists and scholars from our Syracuse, NY community examine life in Cuba and the refugee experience through paintings, photography, video and site-specific installations, complemented by meaningful artifacts, as well as visual and oral narratives, past and present.

Every year, La Casita introduces a themed exhibition as the focus of a yearlong research project that includes digitizing, documenting and cataloging of hundreds of pieces in the center’s digital Cultural Memory Archive. The archive contains a significant collection of photos and memorabilia, as well as oral histories. The 2018-2019 program that runs through March of 2019 centers its attention on the Cuban experience. Most of the items on display come from the homes in our city neighborhoods and the Syracuse University campus community. La Casita welcomes new pieces on loan or as donations to its growing collection throughout the year.

This program is possible thanks to the support of the College of Arts & Sciences, the Latino-Latin American Studies Program, the Office of Community Engagement and the Office of Cultural Engagement for the Hispanic Community at Syracuse University.

Directamente desde los márgenes, una colectiva de jóvenes artistas y académicos cubanos en nuestra comunidad de Syracuse, NY examinan la vida en Cuba y la experiencia cubana en los Estados Unidos a través de pinturas, fotografía, video e instalaciones integradas por piezas históricas, artefactos llenos de significado y narrativas visuales tanto como orales.

Cada año, La Casita presenta un proyecto de exhibición temática que conlleva investigación, digitalización y clasificación de todo tipo de objetos, documentos y narrativas orales. El programa que se desarrolla de septiembre 2018 a marzo 2019 centra su atención en la experiencia cubana. Muchas de las piezas en exhibición provienen de hogares en nuestros vecindarios de Syracuse y de la comunidad de Syracuse University. La Casita acepta nuevas piezas prestadas o donadas para esta colección durante todo el año.

Este proyecto es posible gracias al apoyo del Colegio de Artes & Ciencias, el Programa de Estudios Latinos-Latinoamericanos, la Oficina de Colaboración con la Comunidad y la Oficina de Encuentro Cultural con la Comunidad Hispana en Syracuse University.

GUEST ARTISTS

Richell Castellón Ferreira (Cienfuegos, Cuba,1985) Began his formal education at the Octavio García Hernández School of Instructors of the Arts (Cienfuegos). As a student, he participated in provincial events in the City Gallery where his work was widely recognized. In 2004 he graduated with high distinction and moved on to present his work in numerous collective and solo exhibitions. Recently relocated to the United States, he now resides in North Syracuse. His visions and memories of the sights and sounds of Cuba continue to inspire his painting.

Richell comenzó su educación formal en la Escuela para instructores de arte Octavio García Hernández (Cienfuegos). Como estudiante, participó en eventos provinciales como el Salón de la Ciudad, donde recibió amplio reconocimiento. En 2004 se graduó con altos honores y comenzó a participar activamente en numerosas exhibiciones individuales y colectivas. Recientemente relocalizado en los Estados Unidos, vive en el área de North Syracuse, NY. Dashel Hernández (Camagüey, Cuba) is presenting his latest video titled, Nonsense (2018), a 27-minute video collage that summarizes a day in the every-day life of a Cuban child during the 1980s and early 1990s through a hyperbolic TV program, exposing political indoctrination as a preferred form of control in totalitarian regimes. Dashel is a scholar, poet and contemporary artist of many disciplines. Since relocating to the United States in recent years, his video and installation work have consistently surfaced as profound, bittersweet and critical reflections about life in Cuba, seen through the eyes of his generation. Dashel is an SU alum of the Maxwell School at Syracuse University (G’18) Dashel Hernández presenta su video titulado El Disparate (2018), un montaje que resume un día en la vida cotidiana de un niño cubano durante los años 80 y 90, a través de un programa televisivo hiperbólico, revelando la indoctrinación política como forma de control preferida por el régimen totalitario. Dashel es un académico, poeta y artista contemporáneo en múltiples disciplinas. Desde su relocalización en los Estados Unidos hace dos años, la obra de video e instalación de Dashel presenta una reflexión profunda, agridulce y crítica sobre la vida en Cuba, vista a través de los ojos de su generación. Dashel es graduado de la Escuela Maxwell en Syracuse University (G’18).

Danisley Pérez Bravo-Jayson, architect, photographer, has a fascination for historic buildings, vernacular architecture and construction techniques developed without the use of technology. During her years working in the Historical Center of old Havana, Cuba, she also worked with the community helping those relocating to and from the city. Eventually she relocated to the United States and this year she completed her M.A. in Urban Placemaking and Management at Pratt Institute. Danis sees her work as a combination of architecture, urban planning, historic preservation and community engagement. She is currently a designer / architect at VIP Structures in Syracuse, NY, working on residential, commercial and new development projects.

Danisley es una arquitecta y fotógrafa fascinada con los edificios históricos, el concepto de la arquitectura vernácula y las técnicas de construcción desarrolladas sin el uso de la tecnología. Durante sus años trabajando en el Centro Histórico de La Habana, Cuba, también se envolvió con la comunidad, ayudando a familias en proceso de relocalizarse en o fuera de la ciudad. Ella eventualmente se traslada a los Estados Unidos este año obtuvo un grado de Maestría en “Placemaking” y Administración Urbana (Pratt Institute).

Danis percibe en su trabajo una combinación de arquitectura, planificación urbana, preservación histórica y envolvimiento con la comunidad. Al presente se desempeña como diseñadora y arquitecta para VIP Structures en Syracuse, NY, trabajando en nuevos desarrollos de proyectos residenciales y comerciales.

___________________________________________________________________ Roberto Luis Pérez (Havana, Cuba), dancer/choreographer, was raised in Havana, where he learned about Cuban rhythms and dance from his mother and sister, then a professional dancer at the Academia de Danza in the world famous Tropicana Club. In the 1990s Roberto left Havana and eventually landed in Colombia, where dancing became a career and he started dancing in clubs, shows and festivals, including the famous, "Festival de Cali". Upon his arrival in Syracuse some years later, the love of dance again opened a path for Roberto to connect with the community and he became co-founder of the project known as La Familia de la Salsa. Roberto now teaches dance at Syracuse University and other dance studios around town. He also choreographs live performances and lights up any stage or dance floor, weaving traditional Cuban moves into a dynamic and exciting style full of exotic musical flavors .

Roberto Luis Pérez (La Habana, Cuba), bailarín y coreógrafo, creció en La Habana, donde aprendió los ritmos y bailes cubanos con su mamá y su hermana, que era bailarina profesional en la Academia de Danza del famoso Club Tropicana. In los 1990s, Roberto se fue de su país y eventualmente aterrizó en Colombia, donde hizo su carrera profesional en el baile y se presentó en clubes, espectáculos y festivales de baile incluyendo el famoso Festival de Cali. A su llegada a Syracuse, años más tarde, la pasión por el baile una vez más le abrió el camino para conectar con la comunidad y hoy es socio co-fundador del proyecto conocido como La Familia de la Salsa. Roberto da clases de Salsa en Syracuse University y otros estudios de baile en Syracuse. Sus coreografías y presentaciones en vivo encienden cualquier tarima o pista de baile con un estilo dinámico y lleno de exóticos sabores musicales.

Dalgis was always close to the visual arts, coming from a family of painters. From an early age, she began to draw and attend art workshops. Later she turned to the sciences and continued on that path until she earned a degree in Industrial Engineering (2012). Her passion for the arts, however, remained very much alive and after completing her studies in engineering, she began to take courses in design, curatorial studies and photography. She discovered in photography a way to draw through light, focusing on human sentiment, the occult life of the landscape, and the art of black and white. Her images exude a unique elegance, sensibility and delicacy that received media acclaim in her native Cuba. She now resides in North Syracuse, NY. Dalgis es fotógrafa y siempre ha estado cercana a las artes visuales, ya que proviene de una familia de artistas. Comenzó a estudiar dibujo desde niña y más tarde se inclinó hacia las ciencias. Continuó en ese campo hasta obtener un grado en Ingeniería Industrial (2012). Su pasión por las artes, sin embargo, se mantuvo viva y luego de terminar sus estudios en ingeniería, comenzó a tomar cursos de diseño, curaduría y fotografía. Descubrió en la fotografía una forma de dibujar a través de la luz, enfocándose en el sentimiento humano, lo oculto del paisaje y el arte de la fotografía en blanco y negro. Sus imágenes muestran una gran sensibilidad, delicadeza y elegancia que recibió reconocimiento en los medios, en su natal Cuba. Actualmente reside en North Syracuse, NY.

Sanlly Viera Alarcón (Matanzas, Cuba) painter/photographer. At age 15, he entered the Octavio García School of Art Instructors of Cienfuegos province (BA 2004). After five years working as an art teacher, he decided to further his studies at the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts, specializing in painting (MA 2012). His work received considerable acclaim through numerous collective and solo exhibitions in the Cuban salons and throughout Mexico. Sanlly's work explores the relevance of color and texture in our mundane everyday things and the utility of everyday things as objects of art making. He moved to the United States two years ago and now resides in North Syracuse, NY. Sanlly Viera Alarcón (Matanzas, Cuba) pintor y fotógrafo. A la edad de 15, comenzó estudios universitarios en la Escuela para Instructores de Arte Octavio García, en Cienfuegos (BA 2004). Luego de cinco años laborando como maestro de arte, decidió continuar sus estudios en la Academia de Bellas Artes San Alejandro, especializándose en la pintura (MA 2012). Su obra fue reconocida en numerosas muestras colectivas e individuales en galerías de Cuba y México. La obra de Sanlly explora la relevancia del color y la textura en nuestras cosas mundanas de todos los días y la utilidad de los objetos cotidianos en el quehacer artístico. Radicado en los Estados Unidos hace dos años, actualmente reside en North Syracuse, NY.

These sessions will be recorded, cataloged in La Casita’s Cultural Heritage Archive and preserved in our Bilingual Library. La Casita will continue to welcome pieces on loan for this exhibition program and stories until the program concludes in April of 2019.

La Casita quisiera agradecer a todas las personas que contribuyeron a este proyecto compartiendo sus fotos familiares, recuerdos e historias personales. Este año estaremos organizando una serie de encuentros donde miembros de nuestra comunidad se puedan reunir y compartir historias. La Casita continuará colectando historias y piezas que deseen prestarse para este programa de exhibición hasta que el proyecto concluya en abril de 2019.
