DUAL LANGUAGE READING CIRCLES La Casita Cultural Center in collaboration with the Our Future program at the Spanish Action League of Onondaga County, worked with a group of 26 children in the weekly Dual Language Reading Circles program to create this bilingual publication in the spring of 2016. The children, ages 4-10, started by looking at themselves in front of big mirrors while deciding which part of their body they liked the most. This led them to reflect on their abilities and good qualities, and how fortunate they are, and then write about it. The following weeks they were provided digital cameras to photograph each other, focusing on the topic they were writing about. This allowed the kids to interact with each other while taking photos and then selecting their favorite ones to be included in this book. The dedicated efforts of student volunteers from Syracuse University were invaluable to the success of this project. Some of the children wrote in English and some preferred to write in Spanish, and then we had all the texts translated to create this bilingual book that will be catalogued in La Casita’s Bilingual Library for all library users to enjoy, hopefully for years to come!
CíRCULOS DE LECTURA BILINGÜE El Centro Cultural La Casita, en colaboración con el programa Nuestro Futuro, de La Liga de Acción Hispánica del Condado de Onondaga, trabajó con 26 niños y niñas en el programa semanal Círculos de Lectura Bilingüe, para producir este libro en la primavera del 2016. Todo comenzó frente a un gran espejo, donde los niños y niñas se miraron para ver qué era lo que más les gustaba de sí mismos. Este ejercicio llevó a los jóvenes a reflexionar sobre sus habilidades y buenas cualidades, y lo afortunados que son, para luego escribirlo. Durante las semanas siguientes, el taller facilitó camaritas digitales para retratarse unos a otros, enfocando en los temas de sus escritos. Esta actividad permitió que nuestros chicos interactuaran entre ellos mientras tomaban fotos y luego en el proceso de seleccionar sus favoritas, para incluirse en este libro. Los dedicados esfuerzos de estudiantes de Syracuse University que trabajaron como voluntarios en el proyecto, contribuyeron grandemente al éxito del proyecto. Algunos de los niños y niñas escribieron en inglés y otros prefirieron escribir en español, y luego se tradujeron todos los textos para crear este libro bilingüe que será catalogado como parte de la colección permanente de la Biblioteca Bilingüe de La Casita para disfrute de todos los visitantes de la biblioteca, esperamos que por muchos años venideros.
BOWS and HEADBANDS I love my bows and headbands because they are unique. They are especially made for me by my mom’s friend Minnie. She makes lots of them, each one different. Flowers are my favorite. I keep them in a purple basket. I tie my hair in a ponytail and put a bow in it. Sometimes they match what I am wearing.

ABOUT THE EDITOR A native of Lima, Peru, Sandra Velaochaga is a Syracuse University student in her junior year. She is double majoring in Spanish Language, Literature and Culture, and Writing and Rhetoric. She aspires to have a career as an editor and translator. This spring of 2016, she worked an intern at La Casita Cultural Center, where she plans to continue learning and gaining experience to develop in her professional career.
