The Sila

The big wood of Italy The wonderful Silan plateau covers an area of about 150.000 hectares; it is situated in the central wild part of Calabria including the municipalities of Cosenza, Crotone and Catanzaro. From the top it is shaped like a big crater surrounded by a crown of high peaks and wonderful woods. The Sila shows flat territories (from the north to the south) and it consists of three macro areas: Sila Greca, Sila Grande e Sila Piccola, with an altitude average among 1.200 and 1500 metres s.l.m; it includes important mountains such as Botte Donato Mountain (1928m.) and Montenero Mountain (1881 m.) in Sila Grande and Gariglione

Mountain (1765 m.) in Sila Piccola. This wonderful area is considered the green lung of Italy and here the Sila national park has replaced the Calabria National Park (founded in 1968). As regards geology, Sila National Park is made of schist granite and biotic rocks. According to recent studies and researches the origin of this territory dates back to the age of Permico in the last period of Palaeozoic. Further information about the Silan plateau allow to describe only partially the everlasting beauties of this territory. Certainly the most popular way to refer to the wonderful land of Sila is the big wood of Italy.

SILAN MUNICIPALITIES 5

Camigliatello S. (1.306 m) The most populated village in Silan plateau. The name comes from the Scamigliati (a monastic order which used to wear only the habit, without jacket). This name in origin was Camigliatello and it later was changed into Camigliatello Silano. It is situated at a junction of roads linking several municipalities of Silan territory; the town was crossed in the past by the S.S. 107 built in 1875 and it shows nowadays a convenient highway: the Superstrada Paola-CosenzaCrotone. Camigliatello is part of the territory of the Spezzano della Sila municipality and it is situated

in the wonderful Silan plateau at an altitude of 1200m. in the area of Sila Grande. Situated at the foot of Curcio Mountain, Camigliatello is the first town of Sila. Here the first inhabitants of Sila moved here to build a well-known visitor centre both national and international which is nowadays the main visitor centre of this area. The visitor centre is situated in a land full of pine trees, fir trees, beech trees, chestnut trees and oak trees. The village offers several services such as hotels, handicrafts shops, restaurants, pizza-restaurants and coffee bars; it offers also a lot of lifts and slopes.

Moccone (1.306 m) The name of this village comes from the river Mucone in which some cow’s remains were founded in the past. It is part of the territory of the municipalities of Spezzano della Sila and Celico. It is one of the most important visitor centres of the Silan plateau. In the past it was an important stopping place for visitors and wood sellers. It is crossed by the S.S. Cosenza-San Giovanni in Fiore and nowadays it is a visitor centre full of economic activities because of the slopes of Curcio Mountain and La Pagliara.

Lorica (1.315 m) The name comes from the Latin word Lòrica (armour, shield). It is part of the territory of San Giovanni in Fiore and Pedace municipalities; it is situated at the foot of Botte Donato Mountain(1928 m.) and it is touched by a Valley surrounding lake Arvo. A mountain range protects this valley full of woods and wild animal species. It is a popular visitor centre. It offers several services: hotels, campings, restaurants, handicrafts shops and typical product shops. It offers also the Cavaliere Botte-Donato slope and a bobsleigh slope next to the cableway square.

Silvana Mansio (1.473 m) It is a visitor centre founded in 1932. This village is situated in the territory of Serra Pedace and offers suggestive pinewoods; nowadays it is a tourist centre for those who want to spent their holidays in contact with wild nature and discover wonderful landscapes. The name of this village comes from the Latin words permanere in Silva and it is situated near the slopes of Carlo Magno and Lorica.

Croce di Magara (1.376 m) The name comes from a Greek word meaning big cross. It is situated in the territory of Spezzano della Sila and Spezzano piccolo. It is a rural village built after the agrarian reform; nowadays it is a interesting visitor centre especially by the environmental point of view because of its closeness to the protected area of Fallistro called “I Giganti della Sila�. It offers several services and it is linked to the municipality of Camigliatello through the S.S. 107 and the modern highway Superstrada Paola-Crotone.

Fago del Soldato (1.450 m) Village situated in the territory of Celico; it is crossed by the S.S. 107 Paola-Cosenza-Crotone. It is a visitor centre founded in the 30s to preserve the wild beauty of this land. It has been for long time a stopping place for wood sellers and for those who wanted visit the wonderful lands of Sila. Here there was the firs post office of the area, the same which later moved to Camigliatello. The name of this village comes from a legend which deal with the fight between a bandit and a soldier; the bandit died and his body was find at the foot of a beech tree (Fago).

Montescuro (1.633 m) It is nearly always surrounded by a thick fog. Next to this place is situated a big metal Cross as perpetual witness to both the silence of this land and the everlasting nights of Sila. On the mountain there are the delays of the RAI and the centre Stazione Metereologica dell’Areonautica Militare. On the Valico there is a stone in memory of Nicola Misasi, a well known artist native to Cosenza who is one of the most popular poet of Sila. From this centre the S.S. 107 can be taken to reach the municipality of Spezzano della Sila.

Villaggio Palumbosila (1.436 m) It is a well-known visitor centre situated at the foot of Gariglione Mountain (1765 m.); it is the highest peak of the Sila Piccola. It is a visitor centre during both the winter season and the summer season because of its position on the beautiful body of water of lake Ampollino. The village belongs to the municipality of Crotone in the property of the municipality of Cotronei. The town was founded by Domenico Palumbo and it is full of residences, hotels, restaurants, cottages and all kind of shops. It is an important sporting centre to both winter and summer sports offering lift facilities, alpine skiing lifts, cross-country skiing lifts, snowmobiles, indoor stadium 20x30, trekking routes, ridings routes, tennis courts, football grounds, playing fields, two artificial bobsleigh slopes 1000m. Long and some lifts to perform summer skiing in “neveplast” that are 120m Long.

Trepidò (1.246 m) It is a visitor centre situated in the municipality of Cotronei. This small rural village is divided into two parts: Soprano and Sottano. The village of Trepidò is surrounded by Larch Pine woods and it is situated near the artificial lake Ampollino which has been built from 1926 to1932. Near Trepidò there are other small villages of Sila such as the village of Ardorino (founded by a priest called Don Gaetano Mauro), Belcastro (a typical rural village with breathtaking landscapes), the village of Lopez (a small town situated in the wonderful valley of the municipality of Crotone) and the small rural village of Baffa.

Villaggio Mancuso (1.319 m) it is a visitor centre founded in the 30s which is situated in the municipality of Taverna in Sila Piccola. This visitor centre is an amazing point of reference for the tourists who want to spent their holidays in such a peaceful place surrounded by the green Silan woods. The village is characterized by small cottages coated with coloured wooden boards to evocate a mountain style. The visitor centre offers: hotels, handicrafts shops, restaurants and coffee bars. The village is situated near the Riserva Biogenetica Poverella-Villaggio Mancuso and the territory of Monaco which is the seat of Centro Visite of Sila National Park. From Villaggio Mancuso it is easy to reach Taverna, the native town to Mattia Preti.

Villaggio Racisi (1.278 m) Villaggio Racisi is a visitor centre situated in the municipality of Taverna, near lake Passante, the Femminamorta mountains and the villages of Gariglione and Mancuso. This centre is a point of reference for those who want to spent their holidays in such a peaceful natural territory surrounded by wonderful Larch Pine woods and Beech woods. The centre offers: hotels, handicrafts shops, restaurants and coffee bars. Villaggio Racisi is situated near: The Riserva Naturale Biogenetica Poverella-Villaggio Mancuso, the territory of Monaco (seat of the Centro Visite of Sila National Park) and the visitor centres of Cicirilla and Tirivolo.

Villaggio Tirivolo (1.587 m) It is a small rural village situated in the plains under the peak of Gariglione Mountain (1,765 m.). The village is characterized by typical wooden cottages. It is a crossroad for the natural beauties of the Sila Piccola, where the routes to the most important cities of Sila start. This territory is characterized by plains, beech woods and monumental trees. River Crocchio, beginning in Colle del Telegrafo Mountain, flows through this territory. At the end of this village there is also a small artificial body of water.

Villaggio Buturo (1.550 m) This visitor centre is situated in the territory of Albi, in the area Sila Piccola in Catanzaro district; it is surrounded by Beech woods and Larch woods. This small village is the seat of the Centro Visite Casa Giulia of National Park of Sila. The visitor centre Casa Giulia is surrounded by Alder woods and White Pine woods; it was built during the first after world war to preserve the natural beauties of this land; actually the centre is going to be restored.

Sporting Centre Tasso-Monte Curcio

the sporting centre Tasso-Monte Curcio is situated near Camigliatello Silano. It is managed by ARSSA. The centre offers a new 8 seats cable car and 52 automatic cables for passengers. The lift starts at an altitude of 1368 m. s.l.m. To reach an altitude of 1765 m. s.l.m., the lenght of the lift is 1809 m., the difference in level is about 397 m., the travel time is about 7 minutes (the running speed is about 50 m/s, and the hourly capacity is about 1800 people. The slopes are opened all round the year from 9 a.m. To 4 p.m. At the departure there is the Tasso Visitor Resort with a coffee bar and a service area; at the arrival there is the Monte Curcio Resort which offers a coffee bar, a fast food restaurant and a service area. There are also wooden cottages, ski schools, ski rental shop and other shops. The centre offers two slopes: the red one which is 2050 m. long, and the blue one which is 2.220 m. long.

Sporting Centre La Pagliara The sporting centre La Pagliara is situated on the S.S. 107 between the municipalities of Fago del Soldato and Montescuro. The centre shows a two seats chair lift which can reach an altitude of 1650 m. s.l.m. The centre offers two slopes: the red one and the blue one. Lifts and slopes are lighted day and night. At the end of slopes there is a typical resort made of wood shaped like a straw rick and a big fireplace showing a copper extractor hood. The resort offers a coffee bar, a restaurant and other services. Near the service area there are small wooden cottages with ski rental shop and ski school.

Sporting Centre Cavaliere-Monte Botte Donato The lifts of Cavaliere-Monte Botte Donato Sporting Centre are situated near lake Arvo in the wonderful territory of Lorica. The centre is managed by ARSSA. There is a 186 cable lift. The lift starts at an altitude of 1405 m. s.l.m. to reach an altitude of 1877 m. s.l.m., the difference in level is 472 m., the length of the lift is about 2,206 m., the running speed is 1,7 m/s and the hourly capacity is about 1140 people. The centre is open during the winter season from 9 a.m. To 4 p.m. everyday and the summer season only on public days. At the departure there is the Cavaliere resort which offers a coffee bar, first aid and a service area. There are also ski rental shops, other shops, fast food restaurant and the access to the bobsleigh slope “Bob Lorica”; there is also a ground with tapis roulant for inexperienced people and an artificial snow slope. At the end of the lift there is the Capriolo Resort which offers a coffee bar, a fast food restaurant and other services. The lift of the blue slope has a lenght of 2,500 m. The red slope is 1000 m. long. The two ski lifts of Valle dell’Inferno travel in the wonderful valley called Valle dell’Inferno. The travel starts at an altitude of 1665 m.s.l.m. To reach an altitude (Codecola di Coppa) of 1877 m. s.l.m., the difference in level is about 212 m., the length of the lift is 773 m. the gradient average is about 27 %, the running speed is 2,8 m/s and 3 m/s. There are two slope in Valle dell’Inferno: The first one (Inferno I) is 810 m. long; the second one (Inferno II) is 950 m. long.

Sporting Centre Montescuro The sporting centre Montescuro is situated in the same name village on the S.S. 107 PaolaCrotone; it offers a cross-country skiing slope. The sporting centre is located under the delays of RAI showing a modern resort with coffee bar, restaurant and ski rental shop. From there it is possible to observe the metal cross which symbolizes the silence of everlasting nights of Silan land, a part of the Silan Plateau and the view of Lake Cecita. Some itineraries open all round the year start in this place. During the winter the path is a snowing road to perform cross-country skiing and many other sports. The slope is located on the Valico di Montescuro at an altitude of 1633 m. s.l.m.; it follows the cold road of Strada delle Vette for about 13 km to reach Botte Donato Mountain 1928m. s.l.m. It is not possible to reach this wonderful road, where the trees are coloured by winter, by car during the winter.

Sporting Centre Carlo Magno The sporting centre Carlo Magno is located between the municipalities of Silvana Mansio and Lorica. The sporting centre takes place in a suggestive landscape made of rings to perform cross-country skiing and trekking in the woods; the rings are from 2,5 to 7,5 km. long and they reach an altitude average of 1.500m. s.l.m. The sporting centre offers a resort a coffee and ski rental shop. This wonderful place is the seat of a sleddog race called Dogs on the Snow: the show is an original race through the Silan Plateau with sleighs carried by beautiful dogs.

Sporting Centre Palumbosila The Palumbosila sporting centre is situated at the foot of Gariglione mountain, on the shores of lake Ampollino. This is one of the most popular sporting centre as regards alpine skiing, cross-country skiing and snowboard. The centre offers: a ski lift and two modern 2/3seats lifts with an hourly capacity of about 3,500 people, a snowpark and a school camping with tapis roulant 120m; it offers also a lot of slopes of different length to an amount of 20 km and an altitude rising from 1350 m. and 1650 m., the difference in level is about397 m. with artificial snow and a night lighted slope which is 2 km long. The centre is opened during both the winter and the summer seasons from 9 a.m. To 4 p.m. At the middle slope there is a resort with coffee bar and service area. The service area offers ski school, ski rental shop, other shops and coffee bars.

Cupone Tour

The aim of this route is to provide a guide to those want to learn more about the natural elements of this land. During the route people will discover a new contact with the territory by living new experiences dealing with the preservation of wild nature and the witness of past activities. The entire visit is also characterised by the presence of protected areas for animal species such as deers, roe deers, wild boars, fallow deers and wolves. The files report all the available informations about the arboreal species of this route.

Beyond the territory of Cupone offering a museum and a visitor centre, this route reaches the wood. Along this itinerary there are some protected areas. Tourists will see monumental Pine trees and some species of Wild Rose plants. The path leads to a small open space where it is possible to enjoy the beautiful view of a Larch wood on the left side. Near the territory of Quattrovie there is a crossroad to another path leading in direction of the municipality of Zarella.

On the Right side of the departure point there is a group of arch trees; instead of the left side of the path there are both pasture and cultivated lands. After walking for few metres there is a path on the left side to span the river Rio Mellaro, then the route leads to a dirt road on the left side. Near Torre Coppo there is a circle downhill route leading to an opposite path which reaches the departure point. After walking on the dirt road, the path reaches the starting point.

Torre Garga to Rovale

From Camigliatello Silano by following the S.S. 107 in direction of the municipality of San Giovanni in Fiore, there is the visitor centre Torre Garga. The departure point is in the Fdc centre of Torre Garga. This itinerary follows the S.S. 108 bis of Lorica in south-west direction to reach the “Valle del fiume Arvo” valley, at the confluence with the river Neto. Without leaving the main path there are a series of crossroads and dirt roads leading to Carlo Magno mountain and other paths leading to Colle Iuri Vetere mountain. Tourists will see Pine woods and rivers surrounded by Alder trees and beautiful valleys full of rural pasture lands. People will also see the slopes of Ramundo mountain, and a landscape rich in monumental Larch woods. From there the road follows the river Arvo to reach the departure point.

Lupo Tour

The path starts from the resort Centro Sportivo Montescuro and it follows the beautiful Strada delle Vette road. After walking on the path where all the trees are coloured by winter, there is the first junction leading to a dirt road in the wood. There people will see suggestive landscapes and when overcast the mountain range of Pollino. By following on the left side there is a ring path surrounding the delays of Rai and leading to the departure point.

The itinerary starts on a path situated near the S.P. 247 next to the resort Agriturismo Fiorella C.da Guzzolini. The route follows the dirt road into cultivate lands. There is a bend on the right side to reach a small stream and then the path turns left. A great part of the road runs on the left side of the Cozzo dei Carbonari wood, then there is a bend on the right side where people will see a group of monumental Maple trees and the well-known casino Percaccianti. Here there is a path on the right side along the S.P. 247 leading to the departure point.

The path starts at the first door on Falcone-Borsellino road near the junction of the S.S. 107. From the first door the path reaches the shore of the river Camigliatello spanning it through a typical wooden bridge; then the road go on to a path surrounded by a Beech wood leading to the ancient water of Fiuggi; maybe the name of this fresh waterfall comes from its own organoleptic properties, the same of the popular water of Fiuggi. From the fountain the path turns back to the first door of the Park; the uphill path on the left side follows the river leading to the centre of Camigliatello. Then the route reaches the second, the third and the fourth door, where some trout fish pounds and two fountains are placed. The last part of this path touches the pic-nic area of Biogenetical Reserve Tasso, the fourth door and, on the left side the Marina Militare holiday village. From there the sixth door can be reached and trough a path on the right side it is possible to arrive at the end of this route.

This itinerary starts at Tasso resort, in direction of Moccone, before the access to the S.S. 107 which is located on a blocked road. Here there is the first door of Candealbero Tour. The dirt road, is hardly to face because it passes trough Beech and Larch woods. Along the path there are the du pecuraru fountain and the ’ndriano fountain, an ancient resort and some fresh waters. Along this route people will enjoy monumental Beech and Larch trees. The last part of the trail follows the piers of the S.S. 107 to reach the asphalted road. Once turned right, the path reaches again the departure point.

The itinerary starts at the first door on the path of Salute which is situated on the second square of Tasso and crossed by the urban road leading to Tasso-Monte Curcio lifts. The route is quite difficult but only in the last part of the path. It is made of ring path and it is placed into the Riserva Biogenetica Tasso. From the highest point the path descends into a Larch wood. At the first junction it turns left in direction of both the fountain and the park, then follows the path on the left side to reach the first door and turns back by the same way. On the left side there is the amusement park of ARSSA and once reached the second door near the market the arrival is next to the ex Colonia Federici.

The path starts at the first door of Percorso Arcobaleno situated on Falcone-Borsellino road, near the S.S. 107. From the first door the path runs along the river Camigliatello just to a typical wooden bridge, then tourists will follow the route just to the Antica Sorgente di Fiuggi. From there the path reaches a stream and the Sette Acque valley leading to a green panel near the Marina Militare Holiday Village. The path runs on the left side by following the third itinerary of the forestry operators to cross the blue slope and the red slope of the sporting centre; there tourists will have to cross the river Curcio and reach the fountain. Once walk about 500 m turn right and follow the path in direction of the sporting centre Monte Curcio, go on to the Marina Militare Village ant take the path on the right side to reach the green panel and turn back to the departure point.

The itinerary starts in Camigliati road in direction of Old Calabria. At the gate turn once right and then turn left by following the dirt road. Go on to the path and turn left three times; then turn right twice. Follow the path on the right side in the subway of S.S. 107 and cross the S.S.107 to turn left and reach the dirt road rising in altitude, turn left and go on to the Giganti di Fallistro. Once reached the fountain turn right in direction of the protected area. Follow the path to reach the Gradoni, turn right and walk on the downhill road. There turn back through the same way on the path, cross again the S.S. 107, take the subway and turn right, cross the territory of Colle del Sagittario and turn left to take the road which lead to the departure point.

This long itinerary starts at the lift departure (at Spiazzo Mariano) which leads to the protected area of Fallistro. By following the road people will find on the left side the way to Magara and on the right side the riding school Croce di Magara. Along the road there is a junction on the right side which leads to the path of the Riserva Biogenetica of “I Giganti della Sila”, where tourists will see a group of ancient Pine trees date back to 1450. Here there is a path on the left side which leads to the protected area, then there is the dirt road where tourists will have to turn once left and then twice right. On the left side people will see the wonderful granite stones in the territory of Spirito Santo where they will find a path. After walking along the road people will have to turn left twice, then once left to cross again the protected area of Fallistro and reach the departure point.

The itinerary starts on the S.S. 107, where on the left side it is possible to observe the FdC bridge of Camigliati. After taking the highway the route follows the S.S. 107 in direction of Croce di Magara where there are some bends and the fountain of Jordanello. Few km later the path reaches Croce di Magara and at the second right road there is the lift leading to a dirt road situated in the protected area of Fallistro. During the winter the lift serves the slope to crosscountry skiing performances and many other sports. Fallistro which was a wild land in the past is nowadays a protected area in which is possible to observe the monumental Larch trees called “I Giganti della Sila” that date back to 1450. The area is managed by the Corpo Forestale dello Stato.

This itinerary starts in San Giovanni XIII square in Moccone and runs along Vittorio Bachelet road. At the first junction the route follows the road on the right side to take the S.S. 107 in direction of Montescuro through the subway under the arches of the Piccirilli bridge of FdC. The road is surrounded by woods and offers a lot of fresh water fountains. This had been the only way to reach Cosenza before the S.S. 107 was built. It links Cosenza-Crotone passing through other villages. After a 5km walk the path reaches a square on the left side of the S.S. 107 in the territory of Fago del Soldato (1450m.). The route continues in direction of Montescuro through a uphill road: here the climate is fresh both in winter and summer. On the left side there is a information panel signalling the territory of La Pagliara. This is the last part of the route. After a series of bends the path reaches the suggestive Valico di Montescuro (1633 m.).

The Panoramic Trail To Lake Arvo cs 80

The itinerary starts on a path situated along the S.S. 108bis near the district of contrada Lorichella. The path crosses at first a small stream and a typical Larch wood. The route is quite easy: it runs along lake Arvo shores offering interesting views of both the lake and the landscape. In the middle part of the route there is a sporting centre on the right side with football grounds. Here there is a road and, after few metres, a bend on the right side running along the “Silavventura” Parco Lorica, an amazing amusement park built by preserving the natural heritage of this land; the park offers a lot of path of different altitude levels built on Larch tree branches. Then the route continues in direction of Mellaro by crossing a small bridge on river Coppo to reach the shore of lake Arvo in the municipality of Righitano.

By walking on the S.S. 179 in direction of the municipality of Cotronei, before reaching the district of Trepidò Sottano, there is a road on the right side with information panels dealing with the features of this path. Tourists will have to walk on the road for 1200m. to reach a square with the information panel dealing with the itinerary. On the right side there is a dirt road. This path is called Purgatorio because of the dialect term Pregatoju which means “a place to pray”. In the past in this place there were many religious buildings, churches and nunneries. The path crosses a territory called Ciciarata, because of a great number of stones with the same shape and the dimensions of a chickpea. The route is also characterized by suggestive views of the Gariglione mountain peak and the suggestive fertile dunes of the Marchesato Crotonese.

Starting from the S.S. 179 at the end of the Trepidò village, on the left side there is a path with a barrier which represents the departure point of this itinerary. There is first an asphalted road and then a dirt road leading to a pine wood. Turn left to reach an amazing landscape which offers the view on lake Ampollino, the fertile valleys of Marchesato Crotonese and a part of the Sila Grande. Along the path there are the delays of ENEL called “Camera Valvole” the last part of a water gallery coming from lake Ampollino. The path continues to reach the territory of Casa Pasquale. In this place there are the ruins of an ancient church of the XIII century, used by the monks of the church of San Marco di Cotronei only during the period of Easter. This is the meaning of the name. From this point it is possible to observe suggestive monolites telling us the story of the tectonic movements of the Silan Plateau. By following the path it is possible to reach again the departure point.

The itinerary starts in the central square of the amazing visitor centre Pino Grande (1150m.) part of the municipality of Savelli (1014m.). from the square starts a downhill road leading to the typical church of the Divino Amore and near the church the path follows a dirt road to reach the river Lese. The River Lese starts flowing on Pettinascura mountain (1708 m.) at the left confluence with the river Neto. The path, quite difficult in its first part, crosses Chestnut woods, groups of Larch trees, Oak woods and Silver fir. The route continues along the dirt road leading to the valley, then there is a uphill road to reach the landscaping peak of Timparello di Gazzera (1249m.) characterized by suggestive views of the cultivate dunes of Marchesato di Cotronei and the green hills of the Silan Plateau of Cosenza. Following the dirt road it is possible to reach the S.P. 28, and then take the road on the right side in direction of Pino Grande Village leading to the departure point.

The itinerary starts in Marconi road in the district of Savelli to follow the S.S. 260 ex 108ter in direction of Campana; the first junction is situated at about 1200 m where there is an uphill road on the left side leading to the territory of Savelli in Pino Grande Village. The road is asphalted in the first part of the route and then changes into a dirt road that could be easily faced. On the path before reaching the village, there are groups of Larch woods and granite stone monoliths. The route crosses Pino Grande and continues on the S.P. 28 for about 1600 m., then the road turns right and (on the right side) leads to beautiful different dirt roads interesting in a natural and landscape point of view. Along this path it is possible to observe big groups of granite stones, fruit trees and age-old oaks in the territory of “Ferrari”. At the end there is a uphill road which leads to the S.S. 260, turns on the right side to reach the district of Savelli.

The path starts at the church of Ardorino Village on the S.S. 179 which leads to Trepidò Sottano. In front of this beauti1207 ful church there is a path which marks the route. The path crosses a Larch wood to reach a road showing further information about this itinerary leading to the Crocifisso della Chiesola. Along the road at the 1451 medium point there is a fresh water fountain which asks for a pause. In the first part of the route there are Larch woods, in the second part instead there are Beech woods. Along the path it is possible to see big granite monoliths, a well-signalled road leading on the right side. The path continues just to reach Radura del Lupo. On the right side of the plain there is the rood and the rests of the church. The route starts on the S.S. 179dir near the Cutura Village in the territory of Sila Piccola of Catanzaro and runs into the protected area of Riserva Naturale Biogenetica Poverella-Villaggio Mancuso. The protected area consists of a wonderful Larch wood with an average age of 100 years. After the first part of the route the path leads to the River Simeri valley. On the opposite bank of the river it is possible to see the waste plains where in ancient times were cultivated the segala jermanu and the wheat majorca. By following the route this path leads to the ruins of an ancient water mill. Here tourists will have the possibility to turn back along the road in the opposite direction, taking the uphill road leading to Colle Poverella. Another possibility is to follow the slope to reach the river Simeri. The path surrounds the land of Roncino-Monaco in direction of the well-known Albergo delle Fate and so it crosses Villaggio Mancuso to turn back to Villaggio Cutura.

This artificial lake shows a surface of about 13 kmq and a capacity of about 108 million cubic metres of water. This lake has been built between 1950 and 1955 on the river Mucone to produce electricity. The lake is a confluent to the rivers Mucone, Vaccarizzi and Cecita. The Lake Arvo (alt.1278) is situated in the territory of Sila Grande, it covers the high valley of the same name river, to Nocelle Soprana, in the municipality of San Giovanni in Fiore (CS); it shows a breakwater which is 2,5m high. This lake has a capacity of about 84 million cubic metres of water, a perimeter of 24 km and a length of about 8,7 km. This lake has been built between 1926 and 1932. It is the confluent to the rivers Arvo, Capalbo ant the streams Melillo, Cavaliere, Pugliese and Rovalicchio. Lake Arvo was inaugurated by Umberto and Maria di Savoia on 28 May 1932. The lake Ampollino (1271) is the most aged lake of Sila, it is situated among the territories of Sila Grande and Sila Piccola in the districts of Cosenza and Crotone. The lake meets the same name river; it is dammed in the territory of Trepidò in the municipality of Cotronei (KR) through a arched breakwater dam 26 m. high. The artificial lake shows a capacity of about 67 million cubic metres of water, a perimeter of about 26 km and a length of about 9 km. The lake has been built from 1923 to 1927 to produce electricity. It is the confluence of the following streams: Tassito, Brigante,

93 Verberano, Petrone, Caprara and Caporosa. The lake was inaugurated by Vittorio Emanuele III on May 1928. The lake AriamĂ cina or Alto Neto (alt. 1311) is situated in the territory of Grande Sila in the district of Cosenza; it belongs to the municipality of Spezzano Piccolo. This lake has been built on the river Neto from 1953 to 1955 to produce electricity. Its basin shows a capacity of 4 million cubic metres of water and it is dammed by a small dam which is 1170 m long and 17 m. high. The lake Alto Savuto (alt.1260) is a small artificial lake situated among the municipality of Poverella, in the territory of Rogliano, and the municipality of Aprigliano in Sila Grande (district of Cosenza). This artificial body of water shows a capacity of about 1 million cubic metres of water, it has been built from 1925 to 1936 to produce electricity. The basin meets the one of Ampollino lake through an artificial pumping way. The lake Votturino (alt.1428) is situated in Sila Grande in the territory of Serra Pedace (District of Cosenza). The Votturino lake is a small artificial lake built in 1964-65; it was used to irrigate the waste lands of Garga, Righio, Sculca and Croce di Magara. The suggestive lake Passante (alt.1100) is situated between the municipalities of Sorbo San Basile and Taverna, in Sila Piccola. The lake meets the same name river which has origin among Colle Bastarda and Serra Calva; it is dammed through a wall dam 71 m. long. The basin is situated in the wonderful mountain landscape of Sila Piccola characterized by Larch woods; it gives birth to the river Alli in the district of Catanzaro.
