LACEY.B FEATURED DESIGNER Photography by Everett Sullivan
In our featured designer interview, Pensacola native Lacey Berry shares what makes her playful, geometric, and art-inspired Lacey.B designs stand out from other brands.
LDD: First things first, what should we know about you and how did you get started in design? Lacey: I am from Pensacola, FL, and I currently reside in San Francisco, CA. Most of my life I was an artist, and fashion was just another means of self expression. I began redesigning my clothing in high school as a response to the limitations of a strict dress code and wanting to show my individuality. I designed and created several of my dresses for dances as well. While I was in college, I started creating jewelry and accessories just for fun and sold them at a local boutique. A friend of mine is also a successful clothing designer (Smith Sinrod of By Smith Collection), and she gave me the push I needed to start my own company. What makes Lacey.B jewelry distinctive? Lacey B. exemplifies a bright and cheerful style. I majored in Graphic Design in college and I think that lets me look at fashion with a different perspective.
Top to bottom: Millard Bib Necklace, Empire Bracelet in Turquoise, Isobel Necklace, Robie Bracelet, & Tali Necklace
My designs are crafted from ribbon and glass beads. The materials allow me to use an array of color, which I think can be limiting for designers who create metal-based jewelry. Eventually, I would like to find a nice balance between the two. What matters to you most as a designer? It is very important to me that my work makes those who wear it feel special. Fashion is a great way to express individuality, and I want my customers to make it their own. What's your favorite part of the design process? The initial idea stage is great because you get to run wild with your ideas: Throwing anything and everything down on paper, and then editing down to the final collection. It's definitely a process! Of course, it all has to come from somewhere, so what inspires you? I get my inspiration from all over the place: art, life, old photographs. When I design, I usually fall in love with a particular time period or artist and go from there. For example, my Fall 2013 collection is influenced by the glamorous 1930s and the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. We definitely see art deco lines in the collection! How about your personal style? My personal style is always changing, but in general I gravitate toward easy pieces and use shoes and accessories to make it feel special. Recently, I have realized that I have a particular weakness for suede pieces. I have about 8 or more pairs of suede shoes. Do you have any special rituals for preparing for shoots, fashion shows, or other big events? I can’t say that I have any special rituals except coffee, coffee, and coffee. My OCD side prepares by making lists upon lists and trying not to forget anything. Inevitably something falls through the cracks, I just try to “hope for the best and prepare for the worst.” I find that a good attitude makes a big difference. Who are some of your favorite fashion designers? My favorite designers at the moment are Isabel Marant, Elie Saab, Stella McCartney, Tom Ford. There are so many talented designers, it is hard to name them all! For aspiring designers, what can they learn from your experience with Lacey.B? My advice would be to find a mentor in someone you respect, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Where can LA DE DA readers learn more about you and your work? All my jewelry is available for purchase on my website, laceybdesigns.com, and the best way to stay up to date on my line and what inspires it are my social media accounts: Pinterest, Facebook, and Instagram especially. We will definitely be following! Thank you for sharing your time and inspirations with us, Lacey! Enjoy the following images from Lacey.B's Fall 2013 collection. 26 | LA DE DA www.ladedamag.com

BALLS
TITS are the new
by TINA KRINHOP
Although the literal translation of
“Balls are the New Tits” via photo essay would be amazing in its social statement −and actually, it was done years ago by Seattle photographer, Kelly O− that’s not what I’m talking about here today. Okay, go ahead and let out that sigh of relief, because we all know that testes ain’t nothin’ pretty to look at. But symbolically, they’re pretty cool.
Women have used their sexuality as a means of power since the beginning of time. Hey, it’s a useful little gadget us ladies are born with. But what really makes a woman powerful? What really makes her sexy? Sure, plunging necklines can conjure up longing looks that yield women a feeling of power in a room. Men’s minds can fall into tree stump mode when faced with our bodily charms propped up and impossible to ignore. And that power isn’t reserved over only men. We all know that women dress more to impress other women, so it could be said that accentuating our “assets” could be interpreted more so as a form of power over other women. Kind of a “I got more than you got” sort of thing. Flaunting the girls is an obvious sort of sexy and a temporary twinge of power that, in the end, isn’t taken all too seriously. 74 | LA DE DA www.ladedamag.com
So I ask again, what is sexy and what is powerful in women? My answer: balls. “Having balls” is slang referring to having courage and boldness. Having balls as a woman is not being afraid to speak her mind or chew out a deserving jerk. Metaphorical balls are hanging proud on a woman that takes chances and isn’t afraid of change. We’ve all got them, we all just need to let them out to play more often, and maybe more often than our tits. Balls can come in all metaphorical shapes and sizes for women. Some women have obvious big hanging ones, and some have ones tucked away from view ready to drop drag-queen-style at unexpected moments. Mine are red with white polka dots and a tiny bow on top; they look so cute and unassuming until the bow drops off and I let them hang at full glory. At that point, they are taking charge of the situation and there’s no mistaking what they are. I’m proud to be a woman with balls. But it suddenly occurs to me that it is quite comical that the term “having balls” in our society means courage and bravery, when in reality balls are quite fragile and easily hurt. They render men utterly helpless, dropping them to their knees when struck. Pause. Do I need to scratch everything I just said about women needing to get balls, seeing as the little suckers are so vulnerable in reality? I’m not going to get into the argument of who is the stronger sex, but technically speaking, tits are stronger and bolder than balls. So is my real statement here that perhaps we need to change what we consider tough? Perhaps we need to think less of power as a male trait, and change the meaning of the phrase, “Man, that gal has a great set of tits.” In my perfect future, that phrase means that the gal is a real go-getter.
Perhaps we need to think less of power as a male trait... The point, when it comes right down to it, is the same as when I started; labeling certain body parts as tough or sexual is ridiculous. True sexy in a woman has little to do with what she physically wears, how she wears it, or the body parts exposed. Sexy in a woman is clear-cut confidence, a driven nature, and a fearlessness to express herself. Our society has labeled strength as a male body part to possibly convince women that it’s not feminine to be bold and strong. Oh, strong is feminine and courage is sexy. And in the year 2014, weʼll rename this piece to “TITS ARE THE NEW BALLS.” We will be telling weak men across the land that they need to toughen up and grow a big set of tits.

PRODUCTS EYES SHADOW SHIELDS MAC PAINTPOT "GROUNDWORK" MAC EYESHADOW MATTE "SWISS CHOCOLATE" POWDER BEN NYE BANANA POWDER OR LAURA MERCIER BRIGHTENING POWDER MAC GOLDEN BRONZE LOOSE POWDER
The Transition
1. Shadow Shields
Remove the adhesive tape from the edge of the shadow shields and place them under your lower eyelids. These shields will allow you to use eyeshadows without having any fallout onto your foundation.
2. Prime
Apply MAC Paintpot "Groundwork" evenly across the eyelid. This will serve as eyeshadow primer, which will allow you to blend any additional eyeshadows easily, but also provide a subtle and pretty shimmer that looks great for the evening.
LIPS MAC LIP LINER "CHERRY" LIME CRIME VELVETINE "RED VELVET"
3. Eye Shadow
Add a darker brown Eyeshadow to the crease. I recommend MAC Matte Eyeshadow in "Swiss Chocolate," or you can even use a bronze color such as "Satin Taupe" also by MAC. You will need to reapply your black eyeliner and mascara once you are finished applying your eyeshadows.
The Breakdown
1. Apply NYX Primer all over your face, except your eyelids. 2. Then, using a brush or sponge, apply Graftobian Foundation,
The first look, with just six steps, is great for women on the go who still want a pretty, polished, and flawless face.
applying the foundation slightly heavier onto problem areas.
3. After blending as needed, use a cloth sponge or large powder brush to apply and blend Graftobian Setting Powder.
4. Next, apply NYX Black Satin Liner on the upper eyelid as close to
the lash line as possible. You can also apply the liner on the waterline on your lower lid. For smaller eyes, you will not need to use the liner on the lower lid.
5. Apply Anastasia Beverly Hills Lash Genius onto your lashes and
then apply the MAC ZoomLash Mascara on top. For a more dramatic effect, repeat this several times.
6. Outline your lips with MAC Lip Liner "Cork" and apply NYX Butter Gloss lightly in the center of your lips. Rub it in and GO!
4. Conceal & Highlight
Gently peel off Shadow Shields and reapply foundation or your concealer of choice right under the eyes. Concealer should not be any more than 2 shades lighter than your complexion. After, I recommend either Banana Powder by Ben Nye or Laura Mercier's Brightening Powder to highlight your features and fresh face look.
5. Glow
Next, I used Golden Bronze loose powder by MAC Cosmetics on the nose and forehead which gives a nice glow to the skin.
6. Lip Color
Nothing says glamour like a bold lip. I recommend MAC Lip Liner in "Cherry" combined with Lime Crime's Velvetine Lip Color in "Red Velvet." Its matte finish also functions as a lip stain ensuring your lips will be fierce ALL night long!
