It’s cold, it’s already been a hard year, and we deserve a break, darn it. Starting on Page 50, LN fashion columnist Katie Yeadon shares the top warm, comfy wardrobe picks for winter 2022 – modeled at none other than downtown’s hippest new coffee shop, Latte Lounge + HG Eatery. And starting on Page 72, LN contributor Frank Cusumano tells you why the Kurt Warner biopic “American Underdog” should be your next movie night. Cusumano interviews the St. Louis Rams legend and his wife about their real-life love story and their reactions to the flick, now in theaters. More than ready for an adventure? We get that, too. Flip to Page 22, where LN regular Drew Gieseke uncovers the details of The Explorers Club St. Louis – the local chapter of the international adventurers club that seeks to better understand the world through scientific exploration. Finally, on a more personal note: Through this job, it’s been an incredible honor to have the chance to work with so many overtly talented writers. Alice Handelman is one of those wonderful writers – and an equally wonderful person. The entire LN team would like to wish Alice a resounding congratulations for the recent St. Louis Press Club announcement of the Alice Handelman Scholarship Fund for Feature Writing. No one deserves this recognition of excellence more! Stay well,

very person’s body differs from other bodies, and so do people’s health goals. With a wide array of services from medical support to nutrition programs, PALM Health strives to serve every member on a personal level. “Our vision is for people to feel their personal best in mind and body,” says CEO Dr. Lauren Dal Farra. “To achieve that, we take a whole-person approach focusing on the health of the body and thoughts, placing importance on each person’s sense of purpose and meaning in life, and helping people cultivate a sense of connectedness to others.” PALM Health offers more than 120 services all under one roof, including personal training, wellness therapies such as acupuncture and saunas, Pilates and other movement courses, medical services and more. The wellness club’s providers form meaningful connections with members and create customized recommendations tailored to members’ specific goals. “We take a whole-person approach because it’s sustainable and makes a lasting impact on both prevention and treatment of illness,” Dr. Dal Farra explains. PALM Health further offers a variety of membership packages based on what each individual needs or wants most out of her or his experience. For those looking to develop better eating habits, improve their nutrition, lose weight – or all of the above – PALM Health has two programs that will help you start 2022 out right.

8

“Our Balanced Living Program helps people lose weight and keep it off,” Dr. Dal Farra says. “This program gives members the tools they need to succeed in long-term goals centered on making healthy lifestyle choices and fostering positive relationships with food and their own body.” This approach incorporates stress reduction and detoxification therapies, exercise and weekly weigh-ins. It’s also supported by a PALM Lite menu in the café with lighter-calorie menu items. “The café uses local and organic produce to create balanced meals,” Dr. Dal Farra adds. “It’s a Mediterranean diet with a focus on fresh veggies, lean proteins, and whole grains.” PALM Health’s second program is the Precision Nutrition Program, designed for people more focused on their digestive health: people experiencing abdominal pain and bloating or fatigue that they think is diet-related or related to food sensitivities. “We have a number of specialty labs that look deeply at their gut health, which can be done in person or virtually,” Dr. Dal Farra says. With PALM Health, you get more than a typical health club or doctor’s office. Through taking a wholeperson approach and offering the best of medicine, fitness, and wellness therapies, PALM Health can help you transform your health today.

INNOVATION HUB

More Than a Store By Brittany Nay | Photos by Eric Nemens

W

hen Sierra Cortazzo had her first baby boy in 2003, she fell in love with breastfeeding and motherhood, and found comfort in Kangaroo Kids, a Glendale children’s boutique and lactation support center. “I attended the lactation support group starting [when my son was] 5 days old and never looked back,” Cortazzo says. Cortazzo and Kangaroo Kids founder Tanya Griffin became fast friends, and in 2005, the former co-owner asked Cortazzo and her husband if they’d be interested in taking over the store, when Cortazzo was 6 months pregnant with the couple’s second son. As a lover of all things resale and a former manager for multiple other businesses – with a desire to run her own – Cortazzo found the perfect way to feed her career aspirations, as well as keep her family together while she worked at Kangaroo Kids. “I found such a place of support and validation at Kangaroo Kids,” Cortazzo recalls. “I wanted to be that support for other mamas … to give back what I received … to keep it going.” So in addition to helming the store, Cortazzo became a Certified Lactation Counselor through the Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice and the Center for Breastfeeding. The Cortazzos have made Kangaroo Kids their own throughout the past 16 years – all while their boys grew up in the shop. Thousands of moms have sought support there as the full-service lactation support center’s

14    January 21, 2022 | LadueNews.com

offerings expanded into twice-weekly lactation support groups, a weekly support group for all parents, and support groups for postpartum depression and anxiety. Cortazzo fondly recalls helping moms and babies connect through nursing, noting some moms have become lactation specialists themselves, while others have simply enjoyed time connecting with other adults – knowing “they are not alone,” she notes. “Supporting the mom and meeting her where she is at is vital for good outcomes for babies … and moms!” The center offers hospital-grade pump rentals and sells Medela and Ameda breast pumps.

“Our team [members] are certified bra-fitters,” Cortazzo says, adding that the business carries nursing bras and tanks by brands including Cake Maternity, as well as lactation support products from Motherlove Herbal Company. In addition to maternity wear and supplies, the bright, colorful resale and retail store’s everchanging inventory is a curated collection of name-brand children’s clothing, shoes, toys, books, baby gear, equipment and furniture in excellent condition, as well as hand-picked new brands like Green Toys and ezpz feeding essentials. More than a boutique, Kangaroo Kids also has a small play area and cozy group space where parents can sit and connect or feed their kiddos, Cortazzo says: “Customers tell us all the time how cute the shop is!”

HEALTH NOTES

Fertility Treatment Innovations By Connie Mitchell

A

bout 12 percent of American women ages 15 to 44 have difficulty getting pregnant or carrying a pregnancy to term, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Many struggling with infertility turn to assisted reproductive technology, and Vios Fertility Institute, at three clinical settings in the metro area, helps patients explore options and receive treatment. Dr. Amber R. Cooper, director of the medical and in vitro fertilization practice at Vios’ Creve Coeur location, says the organization now offers a new technology designed to improve services and outcomes. With the space-age name “cryo-robot,” created by New York-headquartered TMRW Life Sciences Inc., Vios introduced the first “automated cryogenic storage system for the management, identification and storage of frozen eggs and embryos used in IVF treatment and fertility preservation.” (Cryogenic science, often shortened to cryo and loosely synonymous with cryonics, involves producing very low temperatures, generally for

16    January 21, 2022 | LadueNews.com

biochemical and medical purposes.) Prior to the cryo-robot’s addition, the IVF process was entirely manual, Cooper says. “Issues that have plagued fertility clinics through the years include embryo mix-ups, incorrect transfers of embryos and catastrophic failures resulting in the loss of thousands of irreplaceable eggs and embryos,” she continues. “TMRW’s technology automates and digitizes the entire process, which helps reduce the risk for human error and, more importantly, allows the clinic to individually track eggs and embryos 24/7 through remote monitoring, sensors and state-of-the-art software.” Using the new technology, Vios constantly monitors specimens on-site and remotely, while patients can check in on their individual specimens, accessing information on real-time storage conditions. Cooper says the ability to obtain this level of specific information provides “peace of mind for patients as it pertains to their precious cryogenic tissue.” Although the introduction of the cryo-robot is

new, the concept has been building momentum for several years. “One area of great interest, lately, has been how robotics and automation can assist in storing, retrieving and monitoring IVF tissue,” Cooper says. “Typically, cryogenic IVF tissue is monitored using traditional hard-wired systems that rely solely on human observations. When the TMRW company originally approached Vios, it really provided us an opportunity to stop and evaluate how the introduction of this great system would help Vios provide an even greater level of security with our cryogenic storage systems for our ever-growing patient population.” The Creve Coeur clinic, which began transferring patient fertility specimens to the cryorobot on Jan. 26, is only the sixth location in the nation to introduce the cryo-robot, which Cooper refers to as the “gold standard” in cryogenic storage systems. “It is this type of forward-thinking that will help patients achieve their family goals safely and efficiently,” she says.

Nanci Bobrow By Alice Handelman

anci Bobrow has devoted boundless energy and enthusiasm to the advancement of the metro area for 47 years. Her passion and commitment to the health, education and betterment of people is extensive. A graduate of Connecticut College in New London and Saint Louis University (where she received her Ph.D.), Bobrow has provided psychological counseling for children with endocrine disorders as an assistant clinical adjunct professor of pediatrics at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine. In her professional role, she has helped families cope with problems that arise from such disorders. “Everyone knows they can count on Nanci,” says Pam Toder, Women of Achievement president. “We are thrilled that Nanci, a 1996 honoree and past president, continues to devote her time and energy to WOA. Her enthusiastic leadership is contagious.” As a volunteer, Bobrow has held leadership roles with the National Council of Jewish Women-St. Louis and served as its president from 1991 to 1993. Honored for her impact on the lives of those changed by her service and work, she received the organization’s highest award, the Hannah G. Solomon Award. She has also served on the NCJW’s national board. Bobrow’s leadership helped bring the Silent Witness project to St. Louis and Missouri: “My co-chair and I worked tirelessly to bring the idea to reality, starting with the difficult process of identifying women in Missouri who had lost their lives due to domestic violence.” She has lectured, testified and advocated for legislation to identify abusers and protect victims, and belongs to NCJW’s task force on human trafficking. “After years of doing therapy with victims of child sexual abuse, I focus my efforts on prevention,” Bobrow says. As board president of the St. Louis Crisis Nursery, she contributed to its growth and stability. “We have grown from a single site to five sites, providing 24/7 emergency care and shelter for children in crisis in the metro area,” Bobrow says. The SLCN has served 125,000 children and families during its 35-plus-year history. In 2016, Bobrow was presented with the Champion for Families Award by Nurses for Newborns “in recognition of her contributions of time, effort, persuasion, mentoring, advocacy, planning and board leadership.” She also has served on the Board of Victims for Children at Risk since its inception. Bobrow is proud of serving as president of Prevent Child Abuse Missouri, co-chairing the Task Force on Children’s Justice for Missouri and serving on the Missouri Children’s Trust Fund board. She also received the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Commissioner’s Award. Bobrow and her husband, Jim, an ophthalmologist, live in St. Louis’ Central West End neighborhood. “We enjoyed raising our children in our eclectic and diverse neighborhood,” she relates. “We live lives of service and stress the importance of education, as well as giving back to the community. We support many civic and cultural organizations and institutions in St. Louis.” Bobrow adds: “Our children are committed to equity and social justice. They are philanthropic and active in their respective communities, and we leave a proud legacy for future generations.”

Through The Explorers Club, we offer professors, students and those interested in scientific exploration a venue to share their work and findings. – CYNTHIA PETERS

I

n many ways, life is less mysterious now than ever before. With a few taps on a smartphone, a person can discover everything about the known world, from history and culture to science and the arts. Languages can be translated using code, and thousands of high-tech satellites orbit the earth at all times augmenting human intelligence. Despite this, somehow, discoveries still await. Helping lead the charge in this modern hunt for understanding is Explorers Club St. Louis (as well as its international parent). “Through The Explorers Club, we offer professors, students and those interested in scientific exploration a venue to share their work and findings,” says Cynthia Peters, chair of the organization’s St. Louis chapter. “The Explorers Club is an international organization, and our vast network enables researchers and scientists an opportunity to network with others in their field on a global scale.” The club was founded in 1904 in New York City to promote scientific exploration and field study. Throughout its 100-plus-year history, the organization has helped fund and consult on expeditions large and small, with members reaching heights and depths never previously encountered. Past members have arrived first at the North Pole, first at the South Pole, first to the summit of Mount Everest, first to the deepest point in the ocean and first to the surface of the moon. More than 3,500 members trot the globe today – a collection of travelers, researchers and scientists who are dedicated to discovering, recording and sometimes diagnosing what they encounter in their journeys. Take, for example, Peters’ trip to Mount Everest in 2007. There, researchers studied the effects of hypoxia (a drop in oxygen supplied to or used by the body) on 222 participants to better understand how to treat critically ill patients. These endeavors don’t altogether resemble the ones embarked on by the organization’s originators, but the fact remains that the search for understanding never ends. “Our horizons have expanded well beyond what our founding members conceived as exploration when the club was established,” Peters says. “For example, the digital world did not exist in 1904, so consider the impact of technology on what we’ve been able to achieve and discover. It’s remarkable.” Across the world, club chapters host meetings and dinner events for members to learn from experts in a variety of different fields. In

St. Louis – one of only 34 chapters in the world – the local chapter has welcomed distinguished professors, a NASA astronaut and Peter Diamandis, CEO of Florida’s Zero Gravity Corporation, which lets researchers and thrillseekers alike experience weightlessness without going to space. But education isn’t restricted to conference rooms and Zoom interviews. “Many of our St. Louis members have traveled all over the world, so we use local activities as a way to explore and learn more about the history of our region,” says Peters of the trips hosted by the St. Louis chapter. “Over the years, we’ve been to Cahokia Mounds, explored the cave system underneath the Lemp House, and in 2018, all gathered in Pevely, Missouri, for the solar eclipse.” The St. Louis chapter also hosts smaller gatherings for its members to connect and share recent expeditions and findings. One of the organization’s most recent events was held at The Lewis and Clark Boat House and Museum in St. Charles, where the group learned about the famous expedition. While the club remains a global network of intrepid voyagers, Peters and the St. Louis chapter have recently directed efforts toward expanding membership across the metro area. Individuals can fill out an online application to join, but should note that the club seeks people interested in travel beyond tourism. Climbing Everest isn’t a prerequisite, thankfully. Instead, the club simply searches for individuals who want to get their hands dirty, to learn about the world around us and to document scientific data, no matter where that might be. “In today’s world, exploration doesn’t just mean going to remote parts of Earth or traveling to space,” Peters says. “You can be an explorer and make incredibly meaningful contributions in your own community.” The Explorers Club St. Louis, 8423 Kingsbury Blvd., Clayton, explorers-stl.com LadueNews.com | JANuAry 21, 2022

Pregnant metro area women and young mothers can seek substantive assistance in all asPects of their lives through almost home. By Brittany Nay | Photos courtesy of Almost Home

S

t. Louis nonprofit Almost Home has received a well-deserved boost in its mission to educate and empower young mothers. The local residential facility, which provides transitional housing, education, career training and life skills to St. Louis moms ages 16 to 21, was selected by JTC, a publicly listed, global professional services business with expertise in fund, corporate and private client services, as part of its global employee-led fundraising program, Maximizing Potential, to support education. “Almost Home is grateful for the generous gift from JTC,” executive director Reona Wise says of funding from JTC. “When women first come to Almost Home, they are pregnant or have kids under the age of 6. We work with these young moms as they reside at Almost Home and provide them and their children with three nutritious meals and snacks each day.” Along the way, Almost Home offers personalized case management, life skills classes, career training and education, including an on-site GED (General Educational Development) program for moms to complete their high school education. “There is no cookie-cutter approach,” Wise notes. “[For] each mom that comes in, [her] journey will be individual, and education and life skills will be part of that. Through our education and career services and stable living for [moms] and their kids, they are able to be the best parent they can be.” The goal is to empower young moms to become self-sufficient, Wise says. “We work with them until they get to a place to transition … to one of our apartments or another apartment, where we continue to work with them until … they are stable and healthy,” she explains. Through its continuum-of-care model, Almost Home helps 175 families a year, with 95 percent of moms maintaining stable housing after leaving the facility and 90 percent obtaining jobs to provide for their families. “[Moms] start off at the highest need – shelter, clothing, food and support – and as they work their way through our continuum of care, they elevate to the next level of independent living, get to a place where they’re stable and healthy, and can come back and share [their] journey with moms of Almost Home and how they can support them to get where they are.” Michelle Murray, founder and managing director of Sunset Hills-based accounting and finance consulting firm Segue Partners – a JTC company – says: “Almost

We want to break the cycle of lack of Home’s mission of helping young mothers to finish their education, get career training and break the poverty cycle is something that’s extremely dear to my heart. I started Segue Partners, which is now a part of JTC, with the vision of showing women that they can ‘have it all.’ Additionally, education is the key to female independence, and Almost Home serves a need in the community for safe housing for women in need.” Wise says Almost Home depends on corporate funding from companies like JTC. “People don’t realize the need when a mom first comes to us,” she explains. “She needs stable housing, and often an identification or social security card, a medical provider for her and her kids, and sometimes even a birth certificate for her child(ren). These are essential for them to even be able to connect with the community, and all of these have costs.” JTC’s funding has been crucial to Almost Home’s education program, Wise says. “JTC has helped us to be able to ensure our moms’ education experience is where it needs to be and helped cover those necessary costs to get to school and testing,” she says. Wise emphasizes the work of Almost Home impacts all of St. Louis. “We want to break the cycle of lack of education, trauma and poverty two generations at a time as we work with young moms and their children,” she notes. “As these young moms get [local] jobs, become consumers of grocery stores and retail shops, and have their kids in child care and the school system … , it ultimately helps build the wellness of the overall community.”

Although the harmful effects of adverse childhood experiences can be passed on from generation to generation, healing, strength and resilience can also be passed down. That is why I am excited about MHA-EM’s new PEACE (Preventing the Effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences) Initiative. PEACE will provide therapeutic services that strengthen parent-child relationships to give children the best shot at preventing mental health conditions in adulthood. I’m so proud of our deepened commitment to B4Stage4, a philosophy that encourages early intervention to prevent serious mental illness. 20 years of 20 Minutes to Fitness

By Dick Smothers I love 20 Minutes to Fitness. Here’s why. I get special joy from the fact that I’ve done something for myself that I know helped me become a stronger, more fit, 80-plus-year-old. I first came to 20 Minutes to Fitness in 2008, and it was like nothing I had ever experienced in my life. I had been around gyms for many years, and was quite aware of all sorts of workout philosophies, but never this one. In and out in about 20 minutes once a week? This I had to see. I saw it and came back for more. I once embarked on an extended road trip in my RV that took me to the West Coast and points in between, and I couldn’t keep up my workout program. I didn’t pick it up again until the following year. I knew that I had lost some muscle mass and was curious to see how soon I could get it back. I was amazed! With every session I got stronger, which made my life easier and more enjoyable. I like to talk while I’m working out. But that’s just how I do it. It’s not mandatory to be a motor mouth. I’d ask my trainer, an excellent coach, things like, “Did you add weight? How much? How much time did I do last time? How much time have I done so far? Is that all? You’re kidding, I don’t think I can do anymore!” She’d say, “Yes you can, try one more.” So I’d do one more, and it is not easy, but quite often I’d find enough strength to do another one after that. That’s what it’s all about. That’s the genius of this program. You exhaust your muscle groups with a high weight for your ability and a low number of slow repetitions, once a week. You don’t have to do three sets of ten, two to three times a week at the gym. This is a medically based, scientifically proven training program performed on specialized equipment with extremely knowledgeable coaches in a non-gym environment. Over the years, I have biked, swam, danced, meditated, taken naps and more. I live with a great sense of gratitude of the blessings God has given me. I don’t take anything for granted, including my muscles. About the author: Now living in Sarasota, Dick Smothers is best known for being the younger half of the musical comedy team the Smothers Brothers. He began training at 20 Minutes to Fitness in Sarasota in 2008.

Just 20 minutes. Just once a week.

Furniture and lighting with simple painted finishes and casual vintage flair work nicely in country and city abodes alike. Golden Lighting’s four-light Finley pendant is a casual lantern-style fixture with a distressed patina and scalloped trim detail on the metal top hat. It’s available in Burnished Chestnut (shown) or Vintage Sage. (golden-lighting-lights.com)

Jonathan Charles Fine Furniture’s reproduction Saragossa white oak table is distinguished by remarkable carving and a stone top. Part of the William Yeoward Collected collection, the table is perfectly placed behind a sofa or in an entry hall. (brodylamp.com)

Theodore Alexander’s escritoire/bureau is designed with a hinged drop-front writing surface, as well as interior drawers and pigeonholes. It also has three lockable drawers on the bottom and dentil molding detail on the top. (shubertdesign.com)

GROOMING & GLAMOUR

Slow Beauty By Amanda Dahl

A

mong the wide-ranging effects of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, beauty routines for many have transformed to focus on skin care and prioritizing rejuvenation over getting dolled up. Local brand Blissoma, it seems, has always been ahead of this curve. “There’s a renewed interest in self-care,” owner Julie Longyear says. “[People] are doing more for themselves at home than ever before. It is empowering to know that you can do a lot for yourself.” Blissoma’s skin care products are based in plant science, and the brand recently added something new to its arsenal: the gua sha tool. Longyear expounds upon the benefits of using such a stone in your daily routine: “When you build habits around things that feel good in your hand, things that feel good on your face, it incentivizes you to maintain the habit,” she says. “It makes it more enticing to participate in the ritual.” What makes gua sha, a natural therapy of rubbing the skin that is based in traditional Chinese medicine, so effective? “These tools [commonly] have different curved edges,” Longyear details about the stones used for this practice. “There’s usually a concave edge, a convex edge, and one is a more pronounced dip to fit over surfaces like the edge of the chin. “The moonstone tools that we offer have a toothed edge, which allows the tool to grab the skin. You can use that edge to break up adhesions in the tissue underneath the skin. This gives people options to manipulate the skin and stimulate it in new ways.” This simple tool may sound complex to use, but Longyear has done the heavy lifting for you. She provides a how-to video for first time

users, with expert research to back up her methods. “Working with the skin enhances circulation,” Longyear says. “It flushes lymphatic fluids, and it releases tension in the muscles and fascia, [connective tissue that provides internal structure and has nerves]. This helps with nutrient delivery, oxidation of the tissue. It can provide lift to the face, especially when done over time.” To maintain hydration balance this winter, she recommends incorporating the Restore Omega Facial Oil into your routine by adding a dollop in with your daily moisturizer. The Lavish Recovery Beta-Glucan Mask can also work wonders in improving your skin’s hydration balance. Using gua sha techniques to apply these key products can do even more for your skin, which also has a visual benefit, says Longyear.

“The whole idea is to create more movement in the tissue and more vitality,” she says. “The skin looks radiant. If you could encapsulate the idea of slow beauty – doing more with less, valuing the things we have versus having more – that’s always what I’m after.”

LANDSCAPE

Winter

BIRDS

By Pat Raven, Ph.D., with Julie Hess

A

ny cold, gray January day is brightened by activity at the bird feeders right outside the window. We get a colorful assortment of woodpeckers, wrens, chickadees and cardinals, with the occasional junco mixed in. To keep them all happy, we provide water, food and shelter. Water is the easiest part. Our birdbath runs yearround with the aid of an electric birdbath heater in winter. Buy one at Wild Birds Unlimited in Oakville, or order online. Make sure your basin has enough depth to withstand freezing temperatures to protect your pump. If temperatures dip below 25 degrees, I add a kettle of very hot water at bedtime to give it a warm boost during the night. Only when lows dip below 20 degrees do I drain it and turn it off. Food is a bit more complicated. I got tired of safflowers and unknown grasses sprouting below my feeders, and sunflower shells made an unsightly mess. To fix this, I switched to no-mess hulled seed mix. It costs more but involves zero waste and no cleanup time. The mourning doves pick up any spilled seed, so there are no unwanted weeds. Buy it in a 40-pound sack to make it

46    January 21, 2022 | LadueNews.com

more cost effective. In cold weather, birds need more calories, so suet feeders are much appreciated by both resident and migratory birds. Unfortunately, squirrels find suet very attractive, too. This is easily solved by serving only hot-pepper suet. Birds don’t care and squirrels can’t stand it! Earlier this winter, supply chain issues affected availability, so I learned how to make my own. Doing so is fast, easy and fun; check out my recipe to the right. The only unusual ingredient is chick starter, a high- nutrient and vitamin supplement that makes your homemade suet healthier for birds. I saved plastic cartons from previous commercial suet, but you can use a meatloaf pan and cut it to fit after it hardens. The last thing birds need is shelter. Plant a few evergreens to create natural havens for roosting birds. Mine visit their nest boxes in inclement weather, so I defer cleanout of old nesting materials until late winter. Just remember, young chicks get a better start on clean bedding. And while you are cleaning out the basement on a snowy day, watch for fun objects that can be converted into nesting platforms or cavities. One year, an old Easter basket hung in one of my trees housed two clutches of babies. Use your imagination!

Hot Pepper Suet Dough‌ Ingredients   2 cups chick starter   2 cups quick oats   1 cup yellow cornmeal   1 cup flour   ¼ cup cayenne pepper   1 cup peanut butter   1 cup lard Preparation Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl. Microwave peanut butter and lard until liquid. Add melted lard/peanut butter mix to combined dry ingredients, and mix well. Press firmly into molds. Chill. Wash hands carefully to avoid getting cayenne in your eyes.

BASIL INDIA By Mabel Suen

n July, St. Louis’ Tower Grove South neighborhood greeted a new Pan-Asian restaurant featuring Thai, Indian and Indochinese cuisine: Basil India. Basil India plates a unique blend of soups, appetizers, fried rice, noodles and curries. It replaces Basil Spice Thai Cuisine, which opened in 2008. Basil Spice owner Somying Fox joined forces with Turmeric partner Naveen Kumar to bring the melting pot of flavors to the area. “Our plan was to serve three different cuisines in one restaurant,” Kumar says. “We wanted to offer unique Indochinese fusion. It’s very popular in India. I couldn’t find it in St. Louis and wanted to bring that here.” The menu combines elements from each restaurateur’s culinary background and features Thai staples like pad Thai and yellow curry, as well as Indian go-tos including chicken tikka masala and vindaloo. Signature dishes such as Tangra

-style chili paneer – a classic Indochinese dish of paneer tossed in a spicy, sweet-and-savory sauce – round out the diverse offerings. “It’s fresh food, authentic and high-quality,” Fox says. “We have a wonderful chef and are happy to bring his food to the neighborhood.” Highlights from the menu include such appetizers as flash-fried corn cakes and a crispy noodle salad with veggies and tangy bhel sauce. Entrées include Bombay chicken curry with Mumbai-style spices and nasi goreng, Indonesianstyle fried rice with shrimp, tofu and green onions served with a fried egg and pickled veggies. To drink, Basil India visitors can choose from masala chai (classic Indian milk tea made with herbs), South Indian-style coffee, mango lassi, Thai tea and fountain sodas.

SHOW & TELL

Seasons in Review By Mark Bretz | Photo courtesy of Patrick Huber

T

he quantity of local theatrical productions may have plunged in 2020 and 2021 because of pandemic-related delays and cancellations, but quality in no way dropped, as testified by this list, in ascending order, of the top 10 such productions. 10. “The Band’s Visit,” touring company at The Fabulous Fox Theatre. The winner of 10 Tonys, “The Band’s Visit” at The Fox featured both captivating music and a heartfelt story about an Egyptian musical act that accidentally lands in the wrong city while touring Israel – a highly engaging, refreshing, reaffirming and even revelatory presentation. 9. “Now Playing Third Base for the St. Louis Cardinals … Bond, James Bond,” The Midnight Company. Joe Hanrahan, founder and artistic director of The Midnight Company, was enthralling as he narrated and starred in this absorbing yarn, which he also wrote. He and director Shane Signorino made“Now Playing” rewarding and educational, accentuating both the good and the bad of mid-20th century St. Louis and American history. 8. “Songs for Nobodies,” Max & Louie Productions. In this one-woman show, Debby Lennon became almost a force of nature by portraying 10 different characters. She displayed an impressive breadth of talent as both singer and actress in Max & Louie Productions’ richly realized interpretation of Joanna Murray-Smith’s intriguing “Songs for Nobodies.” 7. “Mlima’s Tale,” The Repertory Theatre

of St. Louis. The Rep returned to live theater in 2021 with a fascinating, expertly woven rendition of Pulitzer-winning playwright Lynn Nottage’s drama – an affecting, informative story of modern poaching and the people who variously continue to support that illegal, destructive activity. Shariffa Chelimo Ali’s keenly focused direction astutely emphasized the true tragedy of “Mlima’s Tale.” 6. “Annapurna,” St. Louis Actors’ Studio. Under Annamaria Pileggi’s gripping direction, John Pierson and Laurie McConnell sizzled in a stunning, sobering production of Sharr Wilson’s searing two-character play. The pair gave masterclass acting performances as an alcoholic former English prof and his ex-wife, making “Annapurna,” by turns, amusing and devastating – the epic journey of two people clutching the remnants of a once-proud union. 5. “Chicago,” The Muny. Denis Jones’ frenetic direction let The Muny close its abbreviated 2021 season with a crackerjack musical: composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb’s stylish, sexy and always scintillating “Chicago.” Through Jones’ inspired efforts, The Muny’s interpretation had all the razzle-dazzle one could want – or handle. 4. “Comfort,” SLAS. Again under Pileggi’s meticulous direction, Kari Ely and Spencer Sickmann performed formidably in this taut, provocative world-premiere drama by established playwright Neil LaBute. For viewers, the real “comfort” of SLAS’ “Comfort” involved enjoying important new work given such remarkable life in its debut.

3. “The Thanksgiving Play,” The Rep. In January 2020, The Rep and associate artistic director Amelia Acosta Powell delivered a hilarious holiday treat with an expert rendition of the comedy “The Thanksgiving Play,” a treasure on several levels. In it, Native American playwright Larissa FastHorse took a hysterical yet subtly educational look at so-called manifest destiny, taught in American history books for centuries. 2. “Two Trains Running,” The Black Rep. With The Black Rep’s “Two Trains Running,” set in the late ’60s, director Ed Smith wove a masterpiece of a production through the expert use of his cast and technical staff, including Broadway star James A. Williams, company founder and producing director Ron Himes and J. Samuel Davis. 1. “Dress the Part,” St. Louis Shakespeare Festival. This musical comic romp written by Chicago’s Q Brothers, GQ and JQ, presented a frenzied, hilarious hip-hop take on William Shakespeare’s “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” – set in Verona College Prep high school. Between them, Jordan Moore and Garrett Young, two sensational, manic performers, incredibly played more than a dozen roles. GQ and JQ co-directed, maintaining an incredible pace and consistent high jinks courtesy of Moore’s and Young’s incomparable performances. Kudos to St. Louis Shakespeare Festival artistic director Tom Ridgely et al. for bringing the metro area this phenomenal show.

CHICKEN SANCOCHO Story by Mary Mack | Recipe by Nicholas Zotos of Beets & Bones

C

omfort food cravings are stronger than ever as we burrow in for winter, but after weeks of revelry during the holiday season, many folks are also searching for healthy options. Nick Zotos of Clayton’s Beets & Bones has a dish that can take care of both imperatives. His chicken sancocho, an American take on the traditional Latin American soup sancocho de pollo, brims with flavor and good-for-you vegetables and starches that will keep you satisfied as temperatures drop. “It sticks to your bones,” Zotos says. “It’s really a balanced dish and fills you up. It’s a heritage food and gives you a sense of comfort when you eat it.” The special ingredient that pulls everything together? Culantro. Think of it as a close cousin to cilantro, without the worry of any soapy taste. Zotos finds this herb locally at Global Foods Market in Kirkwood.

ln

CHICKEN SANCOCHO | SERVES 1 Ingredients  8 oz chicken breast  2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil  2 cups orange juice  ¼ cup and 1 tsp cumin  2 Tbsp oregano  1 Tbsp and 1 tsp salt  2 Tbsp fresh minced garlic  1 medium sweet potato  ½ Tbsp chipotle powder  ¹∕8 cup brown sugar  1 cup apple cider vinegar  1 tsp ground pepper  ½ ripe plantain  ¼ cup corn  ¼ cup black beans  ½ cup diced red bell pepper  1 cup quinoa  1 cup lacinato kale  3 cups chicken bone broth  ¼ culantro

Preparation | Marinate chicken overnight in refrigerator in 1 tablespoon of olive oil, orange juice, ¼ cup cumin powder, oregano, salt and fresh minced garlic. Roast in oven at 375 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes. Dice sweet potato and combine with chipotle powder, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, 1 teaspoon of salt and pepper. Roast at 425 degrees until tender for 15 to 18 minutes. Peel and cut plantains on a bias ½-inch thick, and dust with cumin. Lightly oil sauté pan, and heat until oil is slightly sizzling; then add plantain and cook until slightly brown and caramelized. Remove from pan and reserve. Heat remaining ingredients in this order: corn, black beans, plantain, marinated chicken, red bell pepper, roasted sweet potato, quinoa and lacinato kale. Add chicken bone broth and culantro. Once broth warms, serve.

Looking for other ways to kick-start a healthier year? Beets & Bones offers one-, three-, five- and seven-day juice-cleanse packages perfect for newbies. Learn more at beetsbonesjuice.com.

A St. Louis

Legend By Frank Cusumano Photo courtesy of Lionsgate

Kurt Warner and his wife discuss life, marriage and the new movie “American Underdog.”

Q &A

W

hen it was happening, we all said it: “This should be a movie.” Now it is. “American Underdog” was released in theaters Dec. 25. It’s the football story of legendary St. Louis Rams quarterback Kurt Warner and the love story of him and his wife, Brenda. Rams fans had a front row seat for that story here in St. Louis. In fact, after every Rams win at the Edward Jones Dome, before he went into the locker room for interviews, Warner could be seen jogging off the field and running into the stands to give his wife a kiss. Actor Zachary Levi stars as Kurt Warner, and actress Anna Paquin plays the role of Brenda Warner. With the exception of his throwing motion, it’s frightening how similarly Levi looks like Warner, and Paquin adeptly portrays Brenda Warner’s feistiness. The heartwarming true story of the Warners provides more than enough uplifting fodder for the film. Warner sat on the bench for four years at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. He wasn’t drafted. He was cut by the Green Bay Packers. He played in the Arena League. He worked at a grocery store. Then, a few years later, he went on to win the Most Valuable Player award for the 1999 regular season and for Super Bowl XXXIV the following January as a player for the St. Louis Rams. His football career eventually ended in Canton, Ohio, at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Warner has a knack for rising above expectations. Widely considered the NFL’s greatest undrafted player, Warner has consistently inspired those around him, even with his relationship with the love of his life. They met when he was a college student, and she was divorced with two kids, one of whom has special needs. Throughout his career, Warner routinely had TV segments taped at his home, and reporters noticed firsthand how loving the couple’s relationship is. In fact, when they entered the room for this sit-down interview, they walked in holding hands.

So, you watched the movie for the very first time. As soon as it was over, what were your first thoughts?

Brenda Warner: It reminded me how far we have come. It was fascinating to see someone who looks like me and who looks like him. It was weird. Kurt Warner: Wow, it has been an incredible journey we have been on. It’s amazing we have been able to do this journey again. Brenda, did you forget you weren’t looking at Kurt during Levi’s performance?

BW: It’s freaky. It makes me feel weird because I am so attracted to Kurt; it was just a little odd. The most diabolical character in the movie was St. Louis Rams Assistant Coach Mike Martz. Those details were true, correct?

KW: The key to developing me was to ride me. He told me we had to do everything we could to put as much pressure as possible … I told Brenda during training camp that I didn’t think I was going to make it. What attracted you to Brenda?

KW: She helped me to grow into a complete person. She made me realize that there were more important things in life than just football. She made me a complete person.

What did you think of St. Louis as a sports town?

BW: I remember parking the car for Rams games and feeling the sense of community, and they made us a part of it right away. KW: There is no doubt that this is a great sports town, and I would love to see St. Louis get another football team. St. Louis is great at supporting all sports. Kurt, you are in great shape right now. If you played in one game, what do you think your stats would be?

KW: They would be really good. I would probably throw for about 300 yards. BW: I would not let him play in another game. Brenda, were you more nervous watching Kurt play or your two sons playing high school and college football?

BW: Much more nervous watching my sons. They are my babies. Kurt is a grown man. He is tougher. Kurt, you coach in high school. Whose coaching style is more like yours – Dick Vermeil or Mike Martz?

KW: That is a tough one. I am a good mix. I connect with people like Vermeil did, and I push kids like Martz. What is your advice for having a successful marriage?

BW: No backing down; no matter what, we are in this together. KW: There are no options. The only option is to figure this out. LadueNews.com | jaNuary 21, 2022
