Community-building can take so many different forms.
For some, it’s creating a gathering place that fosters celebration and encouragement. For others, it’s crafting art that turns into shared experiences. And for one special local organization, it means helping people in need get back on their feet.
On p. 20, contributing reporter Connie Mitchell talks with the executive director of Keyway Center for Diversion and Reentry. The organization provides supportive services for women reentering the St. Louis community from jail or prison; Mitchell reveals the approach that has led to Keyway’s overwhelming success rate.
And on p. 50, associate editor Charlotte Renner writes about Counterpublic – an outdoor public art exhibition currently on display throughout the St. Louis area conceived from a mission to facilitate access to world-class contemporary art, as well as bring awareness to the stories of St. Louis’ people and places.
With a goal of constructing a physical space to help people through the most vulnerable, nerve-racking and exciting time – early parenthood – The Ellenor is Webster Grove’s newest baby boutique. On p. 31, contributing writer Bethany Christo shares a behindthe-scenes look at the store’s beginnings.
However we build upon it, I’m certainly grateful to call this community my own.

SUN SAFETY
By Dr. Jessica SmithSummer’s on the horizon, and using sunscreen is the best way to ensure safe fun in the sun. With so many sunscreens on the market, it’s hard to know what’s best. There are two types of sunscreen: chemical and mineral.
Mineral sunscreens are either titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. Both form a physical layer on top of the skin and stop the sun from causing skin damage by blocking UVA rays. They are considered safe and effective and are great for people with sensitive skin. However, they can feel chalky and may cause your skin to appear white after it’s applied.
Chemical sunscreen, on the other hand, comes in forms such as avobenzone, oxybenzone, octrocrylene and ecamsule. These sunscreens act more like a sponge and absorb UV before it soaks into the skin, thereby converting the UV rays into heat and then releasing them. However, chemical sunscreens may cause skin irritation and are less ideal for sensitive skin.
Whichever form of sunscreen you choose, here
are some tips:
Apply sunscreen about 15 to 20 minutes before you go outside.
Keep sunscreen by your door and try to make it part of your regular routine.
Apply before you get into the car, whether you’re headed to the pool or any other outdoor activity.
Don’t forget to apply the sunscreen under the swimsuit and onto areas that will later be exposed to the sun, such as under a cover-up.
Use a sunscreen that is SPF 30 or higher. Studies show that there is very little difference in protection between SPF 30 and SPF 50.
Reapply sunscreen. Most sunscreens will need to be reapplied every hour. If you are going to be swimming, use a water-resistant sunscreen. In the U.S., “water resistant” indicates that the sunscreen should be reapplied every 40 minutes, and “very water resistant” indicates that it should be reapplied every 80 minutes.
Even with all the varieties, sunscreen isn’t for everyone. Sunscreen is approved for babies
6 months of age and older. It’s important to keep younger infants out of direct sunlight. Other alternatives include wearing loose, light, longsleeved shirts and pants. Sun hats are also helpful. Rash guards are great for infants and also work well for adults to block the sun.
If a sunburn does occur, it will generally improve in one to three days. You may use acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain as well as topical preparations, such as aloe, for pain relief.
With these tips, your time in the sun can be both fun and safe! Happy Summer! ln

Breaking Barriers
By Brittany NayMore women are choosing the traditionally male-dominated law field than ever before.
The University of Missouri School of Law in Columbia is mirroring a national trend: a more gender diverse first-year class than ever before. Its women’s enrollment spiked to more than 50 percent for the first time in 2020 and continued to climb to a 56 percent female first-year cohort in 2022.
This percentage matched the national average, in which women outnumbered men in law school classrooms across the U.S. and made up 56 percent of all students in American Bar Association-approved law schools, according to a report by Enjuris.
Paul Litton, interim dean of the MU School of Law, says a legal community that mirrors the society it represents ultimately produces better results: “For people to trust the legal system and the rule of law, it’s better that the profession reflects society.”
As MU School of Law cultivates an evergrowing number of successful women lawyers, 138 of 422 judges in Missouri are also females, with three of those women – all Mizzou Law graduates – sitting on the bench of the state’s Supreme Court.
One of those women is Missouri Supreme
Court Judge Mary Russell. When Russell attended Mizzou Law in the early 1980s, the numbers were starkly different – just one-third of her graduating class was women. “I knew that there were considerably fewer women in my class and that being a female lawyer was unusual,” Russell recalls.
Today, female attorneys are more commonplace in law firms, the government and legal education, as law schools focus more recruitment efforts toward enrolling women and hiring female faculty to increase gender diversity, Russell says. “Unlike when I was a law student, there now are many examples of successful women in the legal profession,” she notes. “Women can be whatever they want to be.”
In the 1980s, Russell and fellow females in the law field dealt with strict dress codes, negative responses for taking time off to start a family and being viewed as a minority hire. Russell recalls that there was no point in interviewing at a firm that had a female attorney because it already met the perceived quota.
Although many advancements have been
made for today’s women in law, Russell notes that there are still some unique realities young female attorneys face upon graduation.
“Despite women being in the majority in their classrooms, they will find that, in many situations, men are still in charge; the large majority of managing partners, judges and government leaders are still men,” she explains. “But by working hard, protecting their reputations, listening to mentors and remaining true to professional ethical standards, new lawyers will be successful.”
Russell notes that there is much to learn from today’s new female attorneys. “They are more conscious and successful in balancing family and work obligations,” she notes. “They are not afraid, as my generation was, to speak up when they experience inequalities in the profession. They do not tolerate gender discrimination. I admire and am proud of them.”

Speech Therapy at The Hub
By Connie MitchellMay is Better Speech & Hearing Month, and for some of St. Louis’ youngest citizens who need assistance, better speech is becoming a reality. Nina Mendoza, a speechlanguage pathologist with Maryville University’s Walker Scottish Rite Clinic, is providing free speech therapy to children ages 2 to 6 years old at the clinic’s satellite location in The Hub, a community resource center for residents in the Jeff-Vander-Lou neighborhood.
The clinic offers speech and language services at no charge, regardless of a family’s financial status or insurance coverage. “It can be tough to qualify for state-funded services if the child’s needs are not part of a complex diagnosis,” Mendoza explains. “With the help of our generous donors and grants, the team at the Walker Scottish Rite Clinic has the wonderful opportunity
to help children who may be overlooked. Something I greatly value is parent and caregiver education, which also happens to be a huge part of our approach to therapy at the Walker Clinic.”
To engage this young population, Mendoza takes a playful approach. “I do my best to make activities extremely interactive to maintain motivation and increase participation,” she says. “Sometimes I may need to sneak in articulation drills during turns of a game or get more creative to alter activities to include targets we are focusing on in therapy. For example, my speech kids love going on treasure hunts, so we have fun finding objects I’ve hidden around the room that contain their target sounds. For a toddler with a language delay, we might play in our pretend kitchen or barn while we label objects.”
Mendoza notes that early intervention is very important for children with speech difficulties because speech and language is critical to many developmental milestones. Children
may have subsequent problems with social communication, literacy and academics. She also sees how speech and language problems affect children’s confidence.
By 2 years old, children should be putting two to three words together and following simple, two-step directions, Mendoza says. “Typically, speech sounds develop by certain ages, and there are common errors children will make. Some of the earliest sounds mastered are usually b, p, m, h, t and d, with later sounds developing closer to the age of 5, such as l and s. If you suspect your child is having difficulty with communication, especially if there is avoidance and frustration regarding communication, it is always best to inquire with a speech-language pathologist or your pediatrician for a referral.” ln

DESIGN SPEAK FLOWER POWER
By Madeleine AckerburgNothing says the ’60s and ’70s better than eclectic design and vibrant self-expression, which is exactly what customers find while scrolling through MindFlowers, a St. Louis-based online boutique owned and operated by Olivia Cupp and her partner, Jairo Villa.
The couple first began creating their handmade décor and accessories during Cupp’s senior year of college and moved to Los Angeles with the plan to expand their joint business. They lived there for 2½ years, operating out of their apartment and selling products through Etsy, when the pandemic hit and forced them to change their plans. “We knew we had to leave and we realized we should move to St. Louis, where I’m from,” Cupp says. “St. Louis has had a lot of growth and there’s a lot of potential here. I thought I’d rather be a part of building a community here than in L.A., where it’s competitive and hard to make an impact.”
Cupp and Villa relocated to St. Louis and eventually secured a studio space, which is when MindFlowers really began to take off. At first, the boutique mostly sold handmade acrylic jewelry and standout accessories, such as the mind’s eye stud earrings or daisy necklaces customers can still score on the MindFlowers website. Eventually, the couple dipped their toes into home décor by launching unique and colorful light switch covers, daisythemed coasters and psychedelic wall mirrors, all of which were an instant success.
It’s hard not to fall in love with MindFlowers and even harder to choose just one product. Every item embodies freedom and total selfexpression, and though the ’60s and ’70s were a major inspiration behind Cupp’s earlier designs, MindFlowers’ aesthetic has since evolved to encompass dozens of fun, customizable products that can vibe with anyone’s personal style. “My
main focus is creating things that are unique and that you didn’t necessarily know you needed until you saw it,” Cupp says. “We want people to feel connected, which is partially why we make customizable products that can fit a range of aesthetics, whether your design inspiration is midcentury modern or funky eclectic.”
Under the MindFlowers home décor section, customers can find collections such as Retro Vibes, Art Deco and On Our Mind, featuring everything from retro-themed light switch covers to boldpatterned wall art, groovy disco mushrooms and Magic 8 Ball coasters. On the accessories side of things, an abundance of unique pieces adds flair and funk to anyone’s wardrobe. Customers can choose from jewelry such as statement earrings in fun patterns like cherries and dangling hearts, necklaces, chokers, hair clips and much more – all of which embrace individualism and personal creativity. “The main idea behind MindFlowers was to ‘plant your seeds and let your mind flower,’ – so finding your core values and letting them shape who you are,” Cupp explains. “Our whole goal is owning your self-expression and having the confidence to wear what you want. Even our larger design pieces bring a little joy and happiness into your home, so you can create a space for yourself that represents you.” ln

MARYGROVE
BLOOM GALA
In March, Marygrove held its annual BLOOM Gala at the Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis. This year’s theme, “Pinstripes & Pearls –A Night at the Speakeasy,” had guests decked out in their finest Roaring ’20s attire. During the cocktail reception, guests enjoyed era-inspired drinks while bidding on silent auction items. In the main ballroom, Monseigneur Mark Ullrich offered a blessing before guests enjoyed their dinner of braised short ribs and citrus halibut. Sarah Jane & the Blue Notes provided the dinner music. The emcee for the evening was Margie Ellisor from FOX 2 News, and Fletcher Lane served as auctioneer for the live auction and fund-a-need. Co-chairs for the event were Amber Pook and Erin Rataj. After dinner, guests danced the night away to music by Griffin & the Gargoyles.
Marygrove has faced unprecedented challenges in the last few years, and because of that, events like BLOOM and the generous support of our donors and investors are needed now more than ever. Our mission is simply too important. Frankly, I can think of no holier work than to be entrusted with the care of other people’s children.

FUNDRAISING DINNER AUCTION
Photos and story by Bryan SchraierCelebrating both its annual Fundraising Dinner Auction and 175th anniversary, St. John’s Lutheran School’s parents, alumni, friends and staff gathered at Orlando’s Event Center in South County this March. Guests enjoyed light bites and cocktails while browsing the many silent and live auction items, along with raffle tickets, a wine pull and more. St. John’s Lutheran school provides a challenging academic program that develops fundamental skills expressed through the Christian faith. Students can attend from 2 years of age through middle school.
When I look back at more than 175 years of ministry here at St. John’s, I’m still amazed by the amount of people and the work they put forth. We’ve changed, but one thing that remains steadfast is our growth and love for Jesus Christ and the ministry of these people that continue in our education. Our students continue to grow academically, emotionally and spiritually.

THE CABARET PROJECT OF ST. LOUIS
ANNUAL GALA
In early April, guests gathered at the Sheldon Concert Hall for The Cabaret Project of St. Louis’ annual gala to benefit future performances and education programs. Those in attendance sipped cocktails before enjoying a plated dinner and live auction in which they bid on travel excursions. The concert hall itself was the next stop, where guests were entertained by Tony winner Matt Doyle. The Cabaret Project supports, develops and sustains the art of cabaret and song performance in St. Louis.
[ e gala] strengthens the entire season and is really the engine that drives the entire season. It’s our chance to show ourselves o to the community with the kind of work we do with public performances and our wonderful education programs.

CASA DE TRES REYES
Story and photos by Mabel SuenDes Peres has a new destination for Latin American fare. Casa de Tres Reyes debuted in November with a menu of tacos, grilled meats, margaritas and more.
The concept comes from co-owners Derek Deaver and Ryan Pinkston, who brought on chef Andrew Cisneros of Jalea and Sanguchitos by Brasas to consult on the menu. Chef Marcos Godinez heads up the kitchen and its day-today operations; he brings a diverse culinary background to the table that includes serving as sous chef at Público, working under acclaimed chef Rick Bayless in Chicago and opening restaurants across the country for Pinstripes, a Chicago-based Italian-American bistro brand. Godinez cites his time with family in Mexico as the inspiration for his signature techniques and recipes.
“I was born in the states, but a lot of my childhood was spent with family in Guanajuato, Mexico, tasting food at a young age,” Godinez says. “I cook with inspiration from my family, where I’m from and what I’ve seen.”
The dining area features interior design work by Deaver’s wife, Kasey, who used a vibrant
collection of colorful tile mosaics and plants to complement Casa de Tres Reyes’ bold menu. Choose from a wide selection of food items such as the popular à la carte tacos served on handmade yellow corn tortillas sourced locally from Sureste. Other options include confit pork belly with pico, aji verde, cilantro and house crema, as well as house-smoked brisket with house queso, tomatillo jam, pico and cilantro.
“Even though we do have a lot of heavy-hitting Mexican items, I would love for us to be known as a Latin American restaurant,” Godinez says. “I want to keep integrating and adding things. We’ll be using original tried and true techniques, but the way we put them on the plate may be
different than what people are used to.”
Signature entrées include a la plancha, or grill plates with your choice of marinated chicken, carne asada or blackened shrimp with sautéed bell peppers, red onions, jalapeños, cilantro, lime, chimichurri sauce, black beans, sofrito rice and warm flour tortillas.
Cisneros’ Peruvian influence can be found on the menu in the form of Jalea’s yuca fries, served with aji verde, as well as his signature sanguchitos – smoked chicken salad sandwiches. He also developed an elite appetizer – fire-roasted corn cut from the cob with queso, Tajin, Cotija, cilantro and roasted garlic aïoli.
“One thing I think that will really surprise people is that we have a legit full commercial smoker in our kitchen, so we’ll be having fun with Latin barbecue,” Godinez adds. “I’ll be slowly and strategically pushing more adventurous things on the menu.” ln
Casa de Tres Reyes is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
