LN’s Charity Awards edition is an annual source of gratitude for me – for the compassion and impact made by local nonprofits, for the folks who support them, and for LN’s readers, who selected the five winners with their votes. (Thank you!) This year’s cohort of winning charities is as heartwarming and inspiring as any other. Turn to p. 53 to learn about how these hometown heroes are making St. Louis a happier, healthier place to live.
Summer solstice has finally come and gone, which means it’s officially summertime! If you, like me, never lost the childhood urge to start the season with an ambitious bucket list written in glitter gel pen, copy editor and staff writer Madeleine Ackerburg is here to help. Flip to p. 70 to read about how some of St. Louis’ forefront entrepreneurs and arts enthusiasts plan to spend the coming months.

New Hope for
Alzheimer’s Disease
By Connie Mitchell“Iwould say it’s the beginning of the end,” says Dr. Jorge LlibreGuerra, an assistant professor of neurology at Washington University in St. Louis. He’s talking about recent advances in Alzheimer’s disease research that are bringing clinicians and scientists closer to discovering ways to prevent this common form of dementia. “We’re closer than ever to having a solution. But we are just at the beginning of finding that solution.”
Llibre-Guerra and his colleagues at Washington University’s Knight Alzheimer Disease Research Center are making strides in understanding the disease’s causes, development, chemical blood markers and treatments. Yet much work remains, and clinical trials are underway.
June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, shining a spotlight on Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia that currently affect more than 55 million people worldwide, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Yet despite the attention given to Alzheimer’s disease and numerous educational resources available, many misconceptions remain.
For example, there is little to no scientific evidence supporting many of the rumors about the causes of Alzheimer’s disease. The number one risk factor is something unavoidable: aging. However, researchers haven’t found any conclusive evidence that aluminum, tooth fillings, statin medications or vaccinations contribute to Alzheimer’s disease.
Fears about aluminum have persisted for years, but the studies cited by some proponents of an aluminum-free life were conducted in the 1960s and ’70s, says Dr. Beau Ances, the Daniel J. Brennan MD Professor of Neurology at Washington University. “They gave high concentrations of aluminum to animals, and then they developed some kinds of memory issues. However, people who have very high concentrations of aluminum don’t develop Alzheimer’s disease, so it is proposed to be a link, but there really hasn’t been shown definitive evidence that it causes significant changes,” he says. He adds that the kidneys are capable of removing the insignificant levels of aluminum the average person may absorb from cookware, drinking water or deodorant.
Similarly, no research supports the assertion that statin medications
or vaccines contribute to Alzheimer’s disease. In fact, both may have a protective effect, but more research is needed. “We don’t have the one smoking gun, and it’s probably a combination of factors,” Ances says. Current studies are exploring the potential role of the gut microbiome and inflammation on Alzheimer’s disease risk.
Researchers are also coming closer to developing a diagnostic test based on blood biomarkers that could identify disease development many years before symptoms appear. And newer medications are succeeding in slowing the disease by sweeping the brain of the disease’s telltale amyloid plaques and tau protein tangles when administered to those with mild cognitive impairment.
“Many of us in the field, and I think pretty much all the folks here at Washington University, think that this is enough of a benefit to offer (this medication) to people. We’re very excited that it does change the underlying brain disease, but we also appreciate that it’s not a cure,” says Dr. Joy Snider, professor of neurology. “I think we’re going to see more medications in the next five to 10 years and maybe eventually we’ll have a combination of medications that can really stop this disease from getting worse, which is what we’re all after.”
In the meantime, the physicians agree: a healthy lifestyle is your best defense. Exercise regularly, eat a diet rich in plants and whole grains, manage stress, get regular sleep, and stay socially and mentally active as you age. If you are concerned about noticeable memory changes, talk to your primary-care physician.

Lush Summer Oasis
By Pat Raven, Ph.D. and Julie HessThe Egyptians cherished papyrus thousands of years ago. Growing wild along the banks of the Nile River, it is the rare green swath in an otherwise hot, dry, dusty-beige climate. It was celebrated in art and architecture, given religious and social significance and used to make a multitude of products. Most notably, it was used to create the paper-like material used for scrolls. Some of the world’s earliest written records are preserved on ancient papyrus pith.
The genus Cyperus includes many species and cultivated forms; most are tender perennials. Members of the sedge family, they grow best in wet conditions and are perfect in ponds or damp bogs as annuals. They require constant moisture and grow best in non-draining pots or pools with water above the crown at all times. (Note: to prevent mosquitoes, add Mosquito Dunks or granules to each pot.) These plants are easy to propagate, either from divisions or by sprouting heads that fall into water. Clip aging stems, cut the leaves (filaments) to about 1.5 inches, place them upside down in water and wait for sprouts to appear in about two weeks. This is a fun plant to help children learn about gardening.
Cyperus papyrus, the Egyptian paper plant, is the traditional species used for papermaking. In containers, it may reach 6 feet in height, but in the wild, it may be twice that size. Easily battered by wind, Missouri growers should choose a sheltered, fullsun location, such as next to a wall or in a courtyard.
“King Tut” from Proven Winners is a durable clone of moderate size, growing anywhere from 4 to 6 feet tall. “Prince Tut” is half that size and more wind resistant. “Queen Tut” is the smallest papyrus in this series and makes an excellent container plant with other moisture-loving flowers. “Nile Princess” is a miniature long-filamented cultivar that grows to about 2 feet tall. Similar in size is the “Crown of Pharaoh,” with short filaments instead of long ones, for a clipped look.
Cyperus haspan, another dwarf papyrus, reaches up to 3 feet and features heads crowned with brown tufts of flowers, giving it a more substantial appearance. Cyperus percamenthus, sometimes referred to as compact giant papyrus, grows to about 20 inches. One of my personal favorites is the dwarf umbrella palm (Cyperus alternifolius var. gracilis). Like the other sedges, it prefers constant moisture. Mine grows in my sunroom all winter, then spends the summer outside on the deck. Instead of the thin, filamentous leaves on the heads of paper plants, this one has wider blades, like grass, that look like little umbrellas.
Many varieties are available in St. Louis. I’ve seen umbrella palms tucked into mixed planters and true papyrus at the pond plant store. While many are available on the internet, I’d rather pick my own out in person. Given plenty of sun and water, these easy and tough plants are perfect for creating a beautiful oasis of green in the swelter of our Missouri summers.

Well Met Café
The Shaw neighborhood has a new everyday gathering spot called Well Met Café, named after the classic English greeting “Hail fellow well met.” The corner concept debuted on May 1, featuring paninis, salads, espresso drinks, cocktails and more.
Jonathan Schoen, Brian Schmitz and Travis Hebrank of Be Polite Hospitality – owners of Polite Society, The Bellwether and two concepts at City Foundry: SubDivision Sandwich Co. and Intergalactic Burgers – are behind the new venture. Schoen was inspired to open the café after his real estate developer brother suggested the location, previously a furniture and décor store called Future Ancestor. “He thought it’d be the perfect spot for a coffee shop,” Schoen says. “I came down and fell in love with the neighborhood. The intersection is very vibrant and active.”
The café, occupying approximately 900 square feet, has 16 seats inside and 12 on the front patio. The interior features a midnight blue and white color scheme with gold accents. Repurposed ceiling tiles adorn the front of the ordering counter, framed drawings of Tower Grove Park’s pavilions decorate the walls and potted plants fill the windowsills.
“There’s lots of beautiful natural light from the front, and we wanted to have an austere aesthetic that wasn’t too busy,” Schoen says. “At the Bellwether, we have tons of plants everywhere. We wanted this to be a place to hang out and thought the vibrancy of plants would be a cool look –primarily succulents.”
Be Polite Hospitality’s executive chef, Dan Sammons, developed the menu and named items after pop culture references. Popular paninis include the Ron Swanson (roast beef, ham, turkey, bacon, Swiss and American cheese, dill pickles and Polite sauce) and the Axel Foley (ovenroasted turkey, bacon, caramelized onion, fig aioli, gorgonzola and greens). “It’s been a lot of trial and error going with some classics and putting our
own spin on it,” Schoen says. “Fortunately, we have a very talented chef. We leaned on him quite a bit to come up with unique flavor combinations that would be fun.”
From the drink menu, choose between Goshen Coffee beverages, beer, wine and brunch cocktails including mimosas, Bloody Marys and screwdrivers. Coolers stocked with drinks and grab-and-go goods, as well as shelves with local jams and honey, flank the shop. The fridge offers items like yogurt parfaits, tomato mozzarella salad, potato salad, pasta salad, street corn and deviled eggs.
Future menu additions include dinner entrées, charcuterie boards and “adult Lunchables” with cheese, grapes and crackers. “The idea is that we’re two blocks from the park and we want to have things people can take there,” Schoen says. “We’re seeing what the neighborhood likes and are really leaning into that.”
Soon, the café will offer sidewalk pick-up service from a Dutch door. “You can order your drinks and food on your phone if you’re out walking your dog and come up to the pickup window to grab your beverage,” Schoen says. He adds, “We’re getting such amazing feedback from the neighborhood, and we’re just excited that everyone else is so excited.”
Well Met Café is open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

St. Louis” “Considering
By Madeleine Ackerburg > Photos suppliedWhen it comes to showcasing art, there’s nothing better than uplifting work from local artists.
And this summer, The Luminary, a beacon in the contemporary art scene, is set to do just that with a groundbreaking exhibition that delves deep into the artistic soul of St. Louis. “Considering St. Louis,” curated by Ciera Alyse McKissick, opened its doors on May 31 and will run until July 20, 2024. The exhibition promises to be a profound exploration of St. Louis’ artistic identity, inviting visitors to engage with the complex relationship between the city and its creative community.
Determining what work to showcase from new and existing artists in St. Louis was no easy task. At the heart of the exhibition is a year-long research project undertaken by McKissick, The Luminary’s inaugural curatorial fellow, who examined the symbiotic relationship between St. Louis and its artists by visiting more than 100 arts and cultural spaces, meeting artists and conducting interviews.
“I learned a lot from those interviews and saw a bit of overlap between frustrations I had heard from artists in Chicago, where I live, and Milwaukee, where I’m from,” McKissick says. “Everyone across different spheres wants more –more reach more money, more opportunities to show work, more connection. Everyone wants this, but there isn’t conversation from within to make it happen.”
Prior to her work with The Luminary, McKissick has championed inclusivity and community engagement in the arts, culminating in her founding of AMFM, an organization dedicated to providing a platform for emerging artists and creatives, particularly those from Black and brown communities. “Considering St. Louis” was a natural extension of her passion, resulting in 30 interviews with local creatives across various disciplines who participated in the project.
“I wanted to make sure that I had representation from different communities of artists that I interviewed,” McKissick says. “When
I’m curating, I’m always thinking about different points of entry to engage audiences, artists and the work by including a variety of media, points of view and backgrounds.”
Although The Luminary serves as the central hub for the exhibition, McKissick’s project spans multiple community spaces in St. Louis. By situating the exhibition within various community contexts, “Considering St. Louis” engages audiences from across the metro and fosters dialogue on the role of art in shaping our collective identity, ultimately encouraging a deeper connection to St. Louis’ artistic landscape and making the exhibition accessible to a broader audience.
Visitors to the exhibition will encounter works from a diverse collection of artists, including Charlie Bosco, Marina Peng, Vincent Stemmler, Jen Everett, WORK/PLAY, Jess T. Dugan, Tiff Sutton, Stan Chisholm, Simiya Sudduth, Carrie Gillen, Damon Davis, Taylor Yocom, Dail

Chambers, Yvonne Osei and Cami Thomas. Additional programming will feature artists such as Carmen Ribaudo, Victoria Donaldson, Noel Spiva and Pia Rene.
“If anything, I feel like this exhibition can serve as a moment to see and hear what artists in St. Louis are thinking about and making at this particular moment in time,” McKissick says. “My hope is that the exhibition will shed light on the issues artists are facing in St. Louis and that it further engages a conversation about what resources artists want, need and desire for their practices to thrive.”

Secrets SIDe STReeT
As a reader, you might have questions. What’s a pedestrian walkway? How is it different from a sidewalk? Is it a skybridge that connects buildings above the road? The answer is simple: In St. Louis, a pedestrian walkway is a ground-level path that cuts through neighborhoods, allowing pedestrians to avoid streets and alleys between point A and point B. Unlike sidewalks, which run parallel to streets, these walkways run perpendicular, providing a cross-section view of the neighborhood.
Typically straight, unassuming and wide enough for two people to pass each other, these paths take you on a journey between historic homes and blooming backyards, past tall privacy walls of rustling bamboo, or within earshot of epic pool parties. Go far enough, and you’ll see how the neighborhood aesthetic changes block by block. Paul Sableman notes in his blog “Exploring St. Louis” that the city’s “pedestrian connections” are mapped out on Google Maps in the St. Louis Urban Connections Project. This map highlights various urban passageways and open gates that are easy to miss unless you know where to look. Below are three such pedestrian walkways – the city’s quiet connective tissues.
Limit Walk (Skinker DeBaliviere)
Starting a block south of Delmar Boulevard and ending at Forest Park Parkway, Limit Walk seems initially difficult to access. Historic Parkview, the community it bisects, is closed to cars except for residents and their guests. However, at the intersection of Kingsbury Boulevard and Melville Avenue, a wide metal gate appears, flanked on both sides by doorways. Through the doors lies a richly landscaped, halfloop-shaped subdivision, featuring impressive Arts-and-Crafts-style homes and impossibly tall trees. Walk to the center of the loop, where a metal railing and the sign for Limit Walk mark your path. You can turn north or south to further explore the neighborhood’s architecture and gardens, or stay on the walkway, ducking under wisteria vines and passing tall bamboo forests.
Northampton Walkway (Northampton)
Starting on Pernod Avenue and stretching south, Northampton Walkway spans about four blocks. The clear-cut path appears out
of nowhere, meandering between quiet front porches and pretty landscaping, ending at busy Chippewa Street. The surrounding area is an interesting mix of architecture – from Cape Cod-style houses and bungalows to the pointed brick Gingerbread homes unique to southwest St. Louis City. The walkway, marked by tall yellow poles, crosses land that was heavily mined for clay at the turn of the century, as detailed in the Southwest section of “Neighborhood Histories,” a report by historian Norbury L. Wayman.
Quincy Walk (Princeton Heights)
Starting on Rhodes Avenue and stretching south toward Gresham Avenue, Quincy Walk spans about four city blocks, with alleyways and streets intersecting each one. For a neighborhood that was once called Gardenville, according to its neighborhood association website, Princeton Heights is still in bloom – especially around Quincy Walk. You’ll find small gardens and spearmint bushes in the alleyways. Traveling south on the walkway, you’ll see a mix of Artsand-Crafts-style homes, low-slung bungalows with prominent front porches, and the fairytale Gingerbread homes seen in Northampton.

“Minds in Bloom” Spring Soirée
In April, the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center held its “Minds in Bloom” spring soirée benefitting Miriam School and Learning Center, an educational organization serving children with diverse abilities. Volunteers welcomed guests with a floral-themed cocktail hour, offering fundraising opportunities such as silent auction bids, a golden ticket raffle, wish-granting and a wine pull. During a three-course dinner, emcee Rene Knott took the stage to present awards recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions to Miriam School. Following the ceremony, a live auction and fund-the-future segment rounded out the evening, giving attendees the chance to donate directly toward scholarships for students.
