ThispastNovember,Studebaker,alongwith20otherinteriordesignersfromacross thecountrywereinvitedtodesignaspaceatthe2023KipsBayPalmBeachDecorator ShowHouse,thenation’smostprestigiousdesigneventoftheyear. “Iwasnotified[thatI’dbeeninvited]thedaybefore Thanksgiving,”Studebakersays. “Itwassuchanexcitinghonor,butIhadtoquicklyshiftfromlastminuteholidaydinner preparationstowonderinghowintheworldI’llbeabletodesignaKipsBayshow housequalityguestbedroomandhallwaybytheFebruary16deadline.”
TheentireASDteamimmediatelybegancontactingindustryvendorstohelpturn theirassignedspaceintoStudebaker’svisionofagardenoasiswithafreshtakeonalate 18thcenturyEuropeanaesthetic.SoaneBritain’sLisieuxRose,abeautifulcottonpoplin textilewithasoftwhitebackgroundandlovely floralsinblues,reds,andgreensquickly becamethefocalpointoftheverdantmeadowspace.

OsgoodSchlatter’sisthemostwell-knownformofapophysitis,whichis inflammationinwhichamuscleanditstendonattachestoachild’sgrowth plate.It’stypicallycausedbyrepetitive,overuseactivitiesingrowingchildren andadolescents.Timingcanvarybychild,thoughit’smostcommonwhen kidsaregrowing(inboysages12through18andgirlsages10through16) andactiveinsports.Continuousstressinwhichthetendonandbonecome togetherleadstolocalswellingandpaincausedbyactivitieslikerunning, jumpingorsquatting.

“WithTheDowntownPublicArtInitiative andprojectslikeInSITESTL,we’relookingto re-envisionthewaypeopleinteractwithandsee downtown,”saysRACgrantsandprogrammanager ChloeSmith.“InSITESTLisagreatwayforusto explorehowpublicartcanrevitalizeacommunity.”
OneofInSITESTL’scurrentprojects,“Flora Field,”exploresSt.Louis’richarchitecturalhistory attheWainwrightBuildingdowntown.Digitally designedandcreatedbyKelleyVanDyckMurphy andJonathanMurphyofVanDyckMurphyStudio, thetemporarypublicartinstallationhonorsthe historyoftheWainwrightBuildingwhilealso incorporatingnewelementsofemergingmodern technology.Thesitefor“FloraField”wasa deliberatechoice,KelleyMurphyexplains,asThe WainwrightBuilding,constructedin1891byAdler andSullivan,markedthebeginningofmodern skyscraperdesign.“It’sgenerallyregardedasthe firsttallbuildingtoexpressitsstructureandheight initsform,”shesays.“Thehorizontalportionsof thebuildingareinset,andtheverticalportionsrise freelytothecornice,emphasizingtheverticality ofthebuilding.Mostarchitecturestudentswill studythisbuildingintheirfirstsemesterof architectureschool.”
Wainwright’sterracottaornamentwascreated usingaprocesswherethedesignsweresketched byhandandusedtocreatenegativesthatcould bemeticulouslycraftedintoplastermolds.The terracottawasthenhand-pressedintothemolds toproducetheornamentaltiles.“WhenIthinkof
downtownSt.Louis,Ithinkofterracotta,”Murphy says.“Terracottahassuchanincrediblehistoryin St.Louis,andwehavesomeofthemostbeautiful buildingstockintheworld,butmostpeopletake thatforgranted.”
Murphyspenttwoyearsresearching3Dprinting withclayandhadtwomonthstocompletethe redesignattheWainwrightBuilding.Thefinished structure,whichtookthreemonthstocomplete, iscomprisedofpaintedsteelandconcreteand constructedusingmid-fireredclaythatwastested on-sitetomatchtheterracottausedontheoriginal building.Inadditiontoworkingthroughprototypes forthe3D-printedcomponents,theartistsworked withastructuralengineertodevelopastrategy thatcouldworkwiththeshallowgroundbelowthe sculptureandwithstandSt.Louisweather.
“Inmyresearchandcreativepractice,I’mvery interestedinhowwecanengagetheimmediacyof thedigitalworldwiththeancienthistoryofclay,”

FoundryArtCentretransforms itsgalleriesintoanarcadefor anewexhibition.
Galleriesareofteninastateof metamorphosisasexhibitionschange fromoneseasontothenext,butthe FoundryArtCentreinSt.Charlestookit toawholenewlevelwithitsexhibition“Artofthe Arcade.”Thisexhibitioneffectivelytransformed theFoundry’smaingalleriesintoaninteractive arcadespace,completewitheverythingfrom pinballmachinestoPac-Man.“Bydoingthis,we’re showcasingthehistoryandartistryofarcadesand homegamingsystems,”saysdirectorofartand exhibitionsJessicaMannisi.
Youdon’thavetobeagamingfanatictoenjoy “ArtoftheArcade”–evenMannisiherselfisn’t agamer.Shefirsthadtheideafortheexhibition whiletalkingwithsomeonewhoparticipatedin pinballtournaments,anactivityshedidn’teven knowexisted.Speakingwiththemreminded herofconversationswithherdad,wholoved pinball.“Hewouldexplaintometheintricacy ofhowpinballmachinesaremade[and]allthe circuitryinvideogamesandotherarcades,and therereallyisanartistrytothat,”Mannisisays.“I thoughtthatwouldbeanamazingthingtobring tothecommunityandlettheregionappreciate somethingthatweallloveinsomewayoranother. Weallhavememoriesofit,but[nowwecanfocus] ontheartworkofit.”
Anotherpieceofthepuzzleclickedintoplace whenMannisiconnectedwithTwoPlumbers BreweryandArcadeinSt.Charles,whichhasbeen anintegralpartofmakingthisexhibitioncometo life.OwnerRobertSchowengerdthashelpedby loaningthebulkofthegamesandmemorabiliafor theexhibition.“[Given]thepassionthathehasfor itandthefactthathecanbringthattothewider region,hewastotallydownforit,”Mannisisays.
Guestscanexpecttoseetheclassicgamesof theirchildhoodaswellasgamesthey’venever seenbefore.Forexample,theFoundryArtCentre hasprocuredaJapaneseNeoGeogamesystem, whichwasneverreleasedintheUnitedStates. Italsoshowcasesartworkbasedoncertain games,likelocalartistTraceySnyder’shyperrealistic,close-updepictionsofpinballmachines. There’salsothedesignofthegamingmachines themselvestothinkabout,whichtheFoundryhas paidhomagetobydisplayingmorethan40game marquees(theartthat’splacedrightabovethe

arcadegame’sscreen).Agemoftheexhibitionis acustom-builtpinballmachinecalledapinball painter:Byplayingagameofpinballonit,visitors willcreateone-of-a-kindpiecesofartwork.“The ballisdippedinink,”Mannisiexplains.“Asguests playthepinballgame,theinkdragsacrossthe paperandcreatesthepaintings.”Eventually, thesepaintingswillbeputupasaninstallation inthegallery.Interactivewallprojections,home gamingsystemsandgamingmemorabiliawill alsobeondisplay.
Transformingthegalleryspaceintoanarcade wasnoeasytask,accordingtoMannisi.Aside frombringingincabinetarcadegamesandthe custompinballmachine–whichtooksixpeople totaltocarryintothegallery–Mannisifocused onmakingthespacefeellikeanarcade,downto doingvinyltreatmentsonthefloorandputting gelsoverthelights.“Everythingisgoingtobe blues,purples,greens–reallytransformingthe atmosphereofthegalleryitself,”shesays.
“ArtoftheArcade”isatruedeepdiveinto eachandeveryartfulaspectofgaming.Although it’snotatraditionalexhibition,Mannisisays thegamesthemselvesareartallontheirown. “Everythingaroundusisart–everything.I thinkthatanotherneatthingaboutthisshowis bringingtolightthatartisn’tjustastaticpainting onawallorasculpture.Gamesareverymuchart.”

Wang,aSt.Louis-basedartistwho grewupinNorthernChina,focuseshislatestseries onportraitsexploringthecomplex,andoften complicated,rangeofhumanemotion.Heattributes thestartofhisartisticpassiontohischildhood duringtheChineseCulturalRevolutionwhenhe begancopyingpoliticalcartoonsandcharacters hesawonthestreet.Eventually,Wangtraveledto theUnitedStatesin1987tostudyatWashington UniversityinSt.Louisasavisitingscholarand receivedhisMFAfromFontbonneUniversity.
Inhisrecentcollection,Wangusesportraitsto expresshope,despair,love,griefandotherintrinsic humanemotionsAlthoughmanyofthepaintings reflectsubtledetailsfromhispersonallife,the collectionstillhintsatawiderculturalperspective thatallowsviewerstointerpreteachpiecethrough thelensoftheirownexperiences“Itrytomove betweenpersonalanduniversalperspectives,” Wangsays“Iwanttoinvitetheviewertocomein andfeellikethey’reincludedinthepainting.”
Sunflowers,forexample,areaprevalentmotifin Wang’spaintings.Growingup,hisentirebackyard wasfullofthem–hewouldplayinthefieldsasa child,weavingbetweentheflowerswithhisbrother astheyplayedhideandseek.DuringtheCultural Revolution,however,sunflowerswerealsoused bytheChinesegovernmentasapoliticalsymbol tocontrolthepublic.Wangincludessunflowers inhispaintingsnotonlyasanexpressionofhis ownpersonalidentity,butalsoasatietoagreater culturalperspective.
Theabstractnatureofhisportraitsalso givesWangthefreedomtoincludedetailsthat viewersmightnotimmediatelyseeatfirstglance Immigration,andstoriesfromimmigrants,are alsoathemeheincludesinhispaintings.“Ireally wantedtheportraittoexpressthestorybehind immigration,”Wangsays“Leavingbehindyour cultureandeverythingyouknowtostartoverin anew,strangeplaceisverydifficult.Iwantedto usethepaintingtoshowallthosemixedfeelingsof
hope,frustrationandexcitement.”
Richmond’sexhibition,titled“TheWindow Series,”capturesthebeautyandeleganceoftrees, spaceandlight.Shebeganworkingonthecollection duringthepandemicwhilelivinginVancouver, Canada,andwalkingalongtheSpanishBanksto photographthetreesthere.Ratherthancapturing themfromadistance,Richmondtookpicturesup closetofullyfocusontheintricacyofbranching structuresandlightweavingthroughthetreelimbs.
Inthepast,Richmondtypicallycreated dramaticpieceswithheavytexturesandlotsof detail Forhercurrentcollection,shewantedto trysomethingdifferentbyfocusingonthetrees themselvesusingauniqueprocessofphotography, paintingandtextilework“Iuseatechniqueto burnawaypartofthefabricstructure,andIalso usedanexpandingink,”sheexplains“Whenthe
inkexpands,itmakesatexturedsurface.Then Iremovesomeofthebackgroundwithanacid paste,whichisanoldFrenchtextiletechnique thatdissolvesthecottonbutleavesthesilk.Ithen stiffenandembellishtheimage.”
