“We have this rich history in St. Louis and this focus on strengthening our community and helping our neighbors,” says CEO Michelle Tucker “The funds provide critical support when people are in need When people stumble, they can reach out to United Way, and we can connect them to organizations in our safety net. We can support people who have been hit hard by COVID-19 or the recent flooding, plus the regular challenges of normal times in our community.”

With employment, food and housing insecurities, coupled with the pandemic, the nonprofit is needed now more than ever. United Way of Greater St. Louis supports a wide variety of organizations based on five main priorities: basic needs, early childhood and youth success, jobs and financial mobility, health and wellbeing, and crisis response. This year, Penny Pennington, managing partner of Edward Jones, and Rusty Keeley, CEO of Keeley Companies are chairing United Way’s annual community campaign, along with vice chair Arica Harris, director of payment and banking operations for Edward Jones. Also celebrating 100 years and founded in St. Louis, Edward Jones was a natural fit.
10 AUGUST 19, 2022 | LadueNews.com | A LADUE NEWS SPECIAL PROMOTION
In 1922, St. Louis business leaders came together looking to usher in a new era of charitable giving through offering one gift of support that would benefit multiple nonprofits. Their Community Fund campaign produced $1million for 40 different nonprofit organizations and was the beginning of United Way of Greater St. Louis. Now United Way of Greater St. Louis is celebrating 100 years, supporting more than 160 organizations.
“Our colleagues and clients are thoughtful and concerned about their neighbors,” says Pennington “I have volumes of stories of how these organizatio have helped our colleagues, clients and communities. United Way helps our purpose with agencies that speak to our heart.” The United Way of Greater St. Louis annual campaign is a unique model that connects to the business community and to individuals; it pours into one central campaign that can allocate those funds for achieving a maximum effect in and creating a wraparound approach to assisting those who need help in numerous areas.
“These agencies provide services that no individual nonprofit can provide,” Tucker says. “We’re able to help our neighbors, our colleagues, our family members and friends. You make one gift, and you see it touch so many lives.”

Additionally, United Way’s annual campaign supports the region’s 2-1-1 navigation center and Volunteer Center, which have both been critical resources to local communities and people affected by the recent flooding. “ Whatever your passion is, you can find a way to help through United Way,” Pennington concludes. “Organizations don’t endure for 100 years without being high quality so people can feel really good about combining their talent with United Way and what it does.”

Founded in 2016, Dream Builders 4 Equity seeks to provide workforce development training for people ages 14 to 24 and recently started planning to transform a newly acquired property into its headquarters. The nonprofit’s program helps kids and young adults invest in themselves and their communities while, quite literally, reshaping their surroundings through construction, home repair and landscaping projects in Hyde Park, a predominantly Black neighborhood in St. Louis. “Part of [the program] is just shifting the paradigm in the students’ minds, so the next generation of people growing up and moving into the neighborhood are exposed to a totally different mindset,” says Colin Currie Nelson, construction coordinator for Dream Builders 4 Equity. “They have a mental stake in the community.”

A St. Louis-based nonprofit organization is shifting the way young people think – and investing in the metro area along the way.
Dream Builders 4 Equity teaches participants about construction, real estate investing and personal finance. Their work directly impacts the Hyde Park community: In just six years, nearly 75 participants have completed training and made progress toward the organization’s goal of renovating 50 properties in the community by 2025. When a property sells, trainees who worked on the project receive a portion of the proceeds through a scholarship. The nonprofit also partners with local minority contractors to complete free home repairs and landscaping for local senior citizens. “We’re bridging a gap on a relational level, so the seniors and students get to know one another in the community,” Nelson says. In late June, the nonprofit announced a major donation from Midwest BankCentre, which has locations in the city of St. Louis, plus Jefferson and St. Charles counties in Missouri and St. Clair County in Illinois. According to a press release, the financial institution donated one of its buildings and associated land parcels – valued at $570,000, totaling 1.25 acres and located at 3529 N. Broadway at Mallinckrodt Avenue – to serve as Dream Builders 4 Equity’s new headquarters. Although renovations haven’t yet started, the nonprofit’s leaders look forward to getting into the building sometime next year. Although the bank will still maintain a presence in the building, the finished product will completely reshape how the nonprofit furthers its mission. “The goal is for that to be our new hub in the community but also to have a space for other nonprofits and organizations to have a space in the community,” says Jessica Gaines, Dream Builders 4 Equity project manager. This vision includes constructing a new 15-bed dormitory for program participants to lease – providing the stability that is often needed – and offering financial literacy services, such as homeownership education, to anyone in the“Bycommunity.thetime they graduate, the neighborhood will literally be visibly changing,” says Nelson of the current participants. “To see some of the people in the neighborhood actually gaining from that change, it’s mind-opening. I think that kind of plants the seed of ownership in the students that lets them know you can rise in your neighborhood.” ln

R esearchers at Washington University in St. Louis learned last month that they’d been awarded a $3 million investment from the National Science Foundation to fund a new program designed to boost the metro area’s quantum science workforce. While the win is still fresh, the esteemed institution has big plans for the money – and for the future of science, technology, engineering and math research in the area. “It’s a large grant that’s focused on graduate training,” says Sophia Hayes, vice dean of graduate education and professor of chemistry at Wash U. “Think of it like venture capital for trying out a new way to enhance our Ph.D. candidates.”
Photos by sean garcia at Washington university
“If more companies thought this was a place that had trained scientists and science communicators to talk about this,” Hayes notes, “it can be an economic driver for the region.” ln
Known as Linking Quantum Sensing Technologies across Disciplines (LinQ-STL for short), the five-year program will connect research efforts among Wash U, the University of Missouri-St. Louis, Saint Louis University and Harris-Stowe State University. LinQ-STL is designed to better prepare students to enter and participate in the field of quantum sensing, which requires detailed knowledge of physics, chemistry and engineering, according to a Wash U press release. Researchers use quantum sensor technology that relies on the unique physical properties of nature at the atomic and subatomic levels to detect phenomena that people can’t perceive without specialized equipment. “We know from basic physics that there should be these quantum physics capabilities, but we need chemists and engineers to get everybody there,” Hayes says. “Quantum sensing has the ability to develop new technologies that, even though the physics is known, it takes some smart people to think of different ways to use these new ideas.” Hayes says that around their fourth year, graduate students begin thinking about their next move. Not all of them want to become professors, so LinQ-STL will provide the infrastructure for doctoral candidates to apply for internships in partner research labs and even private businesses to forge interdisciplinary connections that help them leverage their expertise and enhance their research. “We’ve had ideas for ways to better train our students,” Hayes adds. “You can say there’s this idea to do it, but when there’s money behind it, that makes all the difference in the world.”

By Drew Gieseke
The 100 students who are expected to participate in the LinQ-STL project will focus on three areas: “looking out” beyond the Earth and into the universe to develop new observational tools, “looking in” to the microscopic realm and “looking where we cannot yet see” to identify “unmeasured domains” like dark matter. But LinQ-STL’s efforts will reach far beyond the laboratory or classroom. One final component of the program is to identify new ways to diversify the scientific workforce. Hayes and her colleagues see the funding and collaborative approach as an opportunity to train and develop a sophisticated network of researchers and companies in the metro area. The thinking is that as quantum technologies emerge, so too will the workforce behind them.

What began in Boyle’s two-bedroom apartment in 2018 has since blossomed into a storefront located at 4500 S. Kingshighway in Unit 20. And this spring, Boyle acquired about 3,000 square feet of land to grow flowers for Sophia’s Crowns just down the street from the storefront, as well as grow access to fresh food. “The lot is big enough to where we can have one side of solid production for the flower shop, the middle space will be for a greenhouse, then another side will be for fresh fruits and vegetables,” Boyle says. “We’re in the weeding process, which is very tedious, but we’re in the process. We’re going to allow for those fresh fruits and vegetables to be free to residents in the city. It’s about accessibility and being able to teach people the power of growing their own food. There’s definitely a need in communities for people to have access to fresh food, so we’re just really excited to be filling in the gap for that need.” The shop offers build-your-own bouquets on Wednesdays and one-on-one floral design consulting, among other floral goods and services. Event-based offerings include the monthly Flower Crown Class + Sip – “where adults can enjoy complimentary wine while learning how to create their own flower crown,” Boyle says – and Grow & Learn Class for kids 3 to 12 years old. “Everyday options at Sophia’s Crowns Flower Shop include flower crowns, bouquets and vase arrangements,” Boyle details. “We don’t cut down our flower stems till you order to assure a longer shelf life and freshness of our flowers.” ln Sophia’s Crowns Flower Shop,4500 S. Something beautiful is blooming in St. Louis’ Bevo Mill neighborhood – and it’s delightfully dubbed Sophia’s Crowns Flower Shop. “Sophia’s Crowns Flower Shop was inspired by my then 3-year daughter, Sophia,” says Trish Boyle, CEO and lead florist of Sophia’s Crowns Flower Shop. “I had taken Sophia to Tower Grove Park, and at the time, Sophia had a lot of severe eczema, psoriasis, and so her skin was very inflamed from her condition. When I saw her interacting with the flowers at Tower Grove Park, I thought it would be nice to give her a bouquet.”
But when Boyle called a local florist, she was floored by the“Atfee.the time, I was a single mom, and I was working on my master’s degree,” Boyle adds. “I was like, ‘That’s just not in the budget for me.’ Sophia witnessed what was going on, and she suggested that we open our own flower shop so people wouldn’t have to pay as much but still be happy.”

Over the past two-plus years, SLCL has partnered with a variety of local organizations to help bridge the gap for people throughout the metro area, Button describes. In the summer of 2020, the library system received county government funding as a partner in its Digital Equity Initiative, which provided 10,000 hot spots, 6,000 Google Chromebook laptops and virtual tutoring to area students in need. In March 2021, SLCL provided 1,500 GrandPad tablets to help underserved older adults access technology and stay connected to loved ones during the pandemic. A second round (1,500 more tablets) is set to be distributed this month to people who filled out an application. Additionally, the library improved its own facilities to better serve its in-person visitors.

“ The librar y ’ s Wi-Fi network was enhanced inside and outside of the buildings during the pandemic,” Button says. “ The network is accessible 24/7 now, and people may access it outside of the building even after the librar y is closed SLCL also purchased and deployed Cradlepoint router devices on some bookmobiles to create Wi-Fi networks when we are out ser ving the community ”
The St. Louis Community Foundation published a report earlier this year that found “nearly half of all households in St. Louis City and County are affected by some aspect of the digital divide and will require investment to ensure adequate long-term connectivity.” The foundation and the Regional Business Council commissioned this report, which was prepared by the Center for Civic Research and Innovation and global accounting firm Ernst & Young. Its results, which came from research conducted throughout 2021 and into 2022, imply that efforts like those SLCL has implemented are essential but that more needs to be done. Findings show that “the digital divide is best understood by examining and addressing five key components,” including coverage, quality, service affordability, device affordability and digital literacy or mentorship. The report points out that any and all of these factors could impact an individual’s or a family ’ s connectivity. Amelia Bond, the foundation’s president and CEO, says households’ lack of access to devices with internet connectivity is a significant hurdle. “It impacts everything from kids learning to seniors accessing health care to the workforce,” Bond says. “Right now, if you don’t have access to the internet, you aren’t going to find a job. The more components of those five that touch you, the greater the divide.”
g
What the pandemic has done is provide unprecedented funding for us to address this issue. There are a lot of federal funds that are available now that we want to be sure to capture as much of as possible to bring to our region.
Data shows that nearly 55 percent of the population across St. Louis and St. Louis County is “meaning fully impacted” by two or more of these barriers. Likewise, service affordability impacts between 70 and 75 percent of people in the metro area. “Quite frankly, it’s a poverty issue,” Bond adds. “ Where we have poverty, all of these issues impact them.”
The federal government recognizes the divide as well. In 2021, Congress passed a $1 trillion infrastructure package that allotted $14.2 billion to the Affordable Connectivity Program, which subsidizes internet service for lower-income households. The foundation hopes to capture some of this funding as well as other grant money, partnerships with the tech industry and independent funding to roll out the next phase of its plan. The foundation plans to use the data collected in Phase 1 to connect disparate groups, make plans and playbooks for tackling the issue, and implement these ideas in the metro area “This is an enormous issue in our time,” Bond says. “ What the pandemic has done is provide unprecedented funding for us to address this issue. There are a lot of federal funds that are available now that we want to be sure to capture as much of as possible to bring to our region.”

The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated issues that have been present in American communities for years, and the metro area hasn’t been immune to these realities. Amid public health crises and other pandemic-related challenges, the so-called digital divide worsened, emphasizing the disparities between people who can easily access the internet and those who can’t. “Connectivity to the internet is as essential in today ’ s world as power and water,” says Eric Button, deputy director of the St. Louis County Library system

“Dr. Becky takes time to talk to you about your health,” says patient Laura Killmade. “They don’t have just a gynecologist in that office. They have everything to do with a woman’s whole well-being. That’s what drew me to there and to be able to keep my records there. All the services they provide under one roof really helped me.”
In addition, Evora offers primary care, management of peri/menopausal symptoms, sexual health, esthetic services, weight-loss programs, personal training and much more. Evora’s website also includes links to additional resources and educational materials for women interested in learning more about their health. “Evora has truly changed my life,” Killmade concludes. “It’s amazing. I go in about three times a month for all of my appointments, and I love it.”

“I had never talked about it it’s embarrassing,” she says. “Doctors don’t talk about it, but Dr. Becky did and it was huge. It’s easy to talk about here, and that’s such an important thing.”
Killmade met Lynn in a business networking group and was surprised to hear her describe many of the problems she dealt with as a woman in her mid-40s. These were things that her doctors had never brought up, and so when she was due for a checkup, she went to Evora first.
Killmade adds that the massage therapy and acupuncture services offered at Evora have helped with her depression and anxiety and that the pelvic floor therapy has greatly improved her bladder problems, something she was reticent to bring up with her other health care providers.

“This was pre-dry shampoo revolution,” she says. “There were a few products that had been around for years that our grandmothers used, which was like a baby powder formula … I thought, ‘Well, this should come in a color.’” That idea propelled Harriss on a journey – one that led her to launching her own beauty brand, Saving Grace Hair, in 2014, which would change women’s expectations for hair products.
Saving Grace Hair, Glen Carbon, Illinois, savinggracehair.com
Erica Harriss, a mom with a busy schedule like any other, got tired of her dark roots showing in her honey-blond hair and the oiliness that sometimes shone through between hair washes. So she went shopping in hopes to find a solution.
“I don’t have any background in the beauty or hair industry other than being a busy mom who was looking for a solution to make my life easier,” she says. Harriss collaborated with her neighbor, who was a chemist, to determine the final formula for Saving Grace Hair powders that could absorb oil and retain color. When a local hair salon reached out to her about selling her products, Harriss realized this was a useful tool for many people who, like her, Now that dry shampoo and root dyes are more commonly seen on store shelves and at beauty salons, Harriss still feels that Saving Grace Hair rises above the rest. “Ours is … more dimensional than most of the other products that have color in them,” Harriss says. “It really helps to blend easier [on your hair]. We have several shades of mica in our products that make that multidimension possible, whereas most of the other products The two-in-one hair powder washes off, which allows for touch-ups as needed without damaging the hair itself. Saving Grace Hair also offers a retractable brush that provides flexible application of the powder. Harriss notes that many clients with blond or lighter-colored hair prefer to expand the brush, making it bigger, to allow for a less-precise application. Those who have darker-colored hair or who wish to mimic lowlights – hints of color that are darker than the base color –will retract the brush to its tightest point for better“It’sdefinition.likeamakeup for your hair,” Harriss says. “Just like a loose powder that you put on your face to absorb oil and to give yourself a matte complexion, it is like that for your hair.”

StormsSummer
32 August 19, 2022 | LadueNews.com
By Pat Raven, Ph.D., with Julie Hess
The torrential rains in late July magnified every flaw in home landscape drainage and the community’s infrastructure. If you experienced uncontrolled surface runoff, ponding, drain blockage or basement infiltration, it’s time to consider some serious adjustments. This is not the sexy, fun part of gardening, but it’s essential to protect the value of your home and property. The first step in a water-management plan begins by visiting the garden during or shortly after a heavy rain. Don your galoshes and take a big umbrella to walk your property to see where water’s going. Avoid lightning-active storms, though. Look for water sheeting off hard surfaces, gutters overshooting and water pooling and streaming. Take note of where the water leaves yourHereproperty.aresome steps to help your planning: When replacing roof gutters, use oversize troughs to collect more water, which reduces damage to foundation plantings in heavy storms. Remove branches that overhang the roof, and use leaf guards to keep gutters debris-free. Track underground downspout drains to outfall spots, and design garden features to break up and slow the flow. Thick ground covers or gravel aprons work well. Check the soil levels around your foundation. Decades of adding mulch can raise the grade gradually and result in water damage to wooden sills. Garden beds should always slope away from the foundation. If basement infiltration is a problem, consult a professional. Check your sump pump for proper function several times a year. Where water sheets, put obstacles in its path to slow the flow rate. We added swales and outlets to our cobble-lined trail to bleed off rainfall in small bits. Employ a dry-stream to channel water into a retention basin designed for slow release. Where water pools, plan for a rain garden of water-loving plants. Layer plants with beds of trees, shrubs and ground covers to slow the speed of runoff. Reduce lawns and add more trees to help the whole community in many ways. Trees slow the rate of rain reaching the ground and absorb much of the water through their thirsty roots. Making water-management upgrades can cost a fair amount, but as the intensity of local rainfall increases with climate change, take the precaution of preparing sooner rather than later. Missouri records show that heavy rains – more than 3 inches per day – are becoming more frequent statewide. Much of Ladue drains into Deer Creek, a small stream that already has erosion issues. Stormwater improvements are being made at the township level, but you can help by evaluating your property’s water flow as it contributes to the total stream load. An ideal water-management system will keep as much water as possible on your own land by slowing the flow rate to allow deep absorption. More information about community projects can be found at deercreekalliance.org. ln

Fashion
By Brittany Nay | Modeling photos by Danny Reise/Washington University
Shelei Pan, Miku Nambara and Maxine Roeder Photo by Carol Green/Washington University
Students at a local university create apparel for models with diverse abilities.
Emily Moranville Andrew Tollefson Anna Bloom
The models got to know their designers through a series of meetings, learned basic fashion terminology and gained insight into the design process from choosing fabric colors and texture to picking the final looks from design sketches. “Fashion is a really dynamic and tangible part of your appearance that you can experiment with and make yours, ” Pan says. “ The models really were able to connect with their designers and tell their stories through clothing.” The result for model Ella Schafluetzel, who uses a wheelchair, was her ideal “Cinderella dress,” designed in collaboration with student Rebecca Brooks. “Ella’s goal was to dress independently,” Pan says. “Instead of having the dress open up from the back, it opens from the side and shoulder with no zippers. Rebecca and Ella also incorporated magnetic buttons into the dress, which are easier to fasten.”
Model Emily Moranville says that participating in the show “taught me how to overcome my stage fright and be my confident, happy self ! I learned how to professionally pose, more about fashion design and made some new friends.”
Sam Fox School senior lecturer Jennifer Ingram and student Anna Jerdee created an adaptive suit for model Andrew Tollefson. “Traditional button up suits didn’t work well,” Pan explains, adding that his Made to Model suit design had faux buttons on the front and Velcro in back to enable him to put it on while in his wheelchair “ Working together, Andrew, Jennifer and Anna stepped beyond the boundaries of [traditional] suit design to fit Andrew’s functional needs.”
The project also helped its student designers become more aware of the functional needs in fashion that are missing, Pan says. “There are some strides being made [in adaptive apparel], such as Runway of Dreams, and at Target, Zappos and Tommy Hilfiger,” Pan explains, adding that she wants to see this on a local level “ We hope to get local franchises and boutiques to work with our models, who have tons of ideas to adapt items that are currently available to be more functional. We want to use our platform to allow our models’ voices to be heard.”
It was one of many memorable moments for Pan, a student entering her junior year at Washington University in St. Louis, as she launched Made to Model in the spring at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts’ annual fashion show
Made to Model was funded by the Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement, City Studio STL and Women’s Society of Washington University, with fabric donations from Wash U alumna Paula Varsalona. Washington University in St. Louis, 1 Brookings Drive, St. Louis, 314-935-5000, wustl.edu
LadueNews.com | AUGUST 19, 2022 39 SH ELEI PAN
“I had a friend who used a mobility device who said it was hard to find homecoming and prom dresses,” Pan explains, adding that dresses on the market were either too large to fit her friend’s frame or too adolescent in style. Almost a year in the making, Made to Model came together after Pan successfully pitched her idea for an adaptive fashion show to Mary Ruppert-Stroescu, Sam Fox School associate professor and fashion design program director, and young models were recommended by the Special School District of St. Louis County and nonprofits Variety the Children’s Charity of St. Louis and Kids Enjoy Exercise Now
Made to Model shone a spotlight on individuals with disabilities an underrepresented population in the fashion world, Pan notes. “The fashion industry has been moving in the right direction in recent years, ” she explains, noting sizing inclusivity has become more mainstream. “But still, disability representation isn’t on par with that, and hopefully, it will catch up. ”
Shelei Pan will never forget the beaming smile on Anna Bloom’s face as she appeared on the runway in her “dream dress.”
The models really were able to connect with their designers and tell their stories through clothing.
Pan was inspired to design adaptive clothing by a classmate while attending Ladue Horton Watkins High School
EllaSchafuetzel
The project teamed Wash U students from the Sam Fox School and metro area young people with disabilities to create clothes that fit both their personalities and their functional needs.

“The Glennon Gallop supports the Danis Pediatric Center by helping provide services that focus on preventive care that addresses social determinants of health, such as poverty, food insecurity, mental health and language barriers,” explains Sandy Koller, president of SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation. Some services that will benefit from the Glennon Gallop include DanisCARES, which links families with social determinants of health to appropriate resources; FACES, a clinic that addresses the complex medical, emotional and psychosocial needs of internationally adopted, immigrant and refugee children; and parenting and foster care services. “We invite the community to join us at this one-of-a-kind event and invest with us in our mission,” Koller says. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Glennon Gallop, having grown from just one tent on one side of the polo field into a large-scale event that hosts roughly 1,500 people. “We truly feel that this is one of the most unique events in our area we turn a giant field into a little city that offers everything from a great polo match, fine dining, shopping and, of course, sharing the amazing work of the Danis Pediatric Center,” says Koller “We are so grateful each year for the multitude of people that make their way to Defiance to enjoy a day they won’t soon forget.”

“One thing we never want to change is how deeply we want to welcome our guests and make them feel comfortable,” Bahrami says. “It’s almost like a hug from an old friend – familiar, yet entirely new.” ln

“It comes from a Latin phrase commonly used in Rome to say ‘hello’ and to ‘be well,’” he says. “It’s our way of saying welcome to new and old friends.” With Salve, the trio hopes to foster a community dining experience, featuring “harvest-centric” elevated food influenced by central Italian, southern Spanish and North African cuisine. “Natasha and I have always been in love with European drinking and eating culture – going out with a bunch of friends, sitting for a while and ordering the entire menu with aperitivos to start, wine and cocktails throughout the experience and digestivos when you finish,” Fricker says. “The entire idea is for the menu to be fully guest experience-driven, so everyone can sit for a while and have the best time possible.”
The restaurant comes from Cafe Natasha’s namesake, Natasha Bahrami, known as The Gin Girl, partnering with her husband, Michael Fricker, and chef Matt Wynn. “It’s been so wonderful to be able to take this new step in our lives after a celebratory farewell, with one door closing and another opening,” Natasha says. “We’ve had such an embrace, not only from our ‘forevers,’ who really came to support us in this new endeavor, but also from new guests that we hope to make our Salve ‘forevers.’” Fricker, who also owns neighboring retailer Grand Spirits Bottle Co., identifies salve as an Italian greeting essentially meaning “welcome.”
By Mabel Suen In St. Louis’ Tower Grove East neighborhood, Salve Osteria has succeeded Cafe Natasha (which closed this spring following matriarch Hamishe Bahrami’s retirement), heralding a new era of Italian-, Spanish- and Mediterraneaninspired shareable plates alongside the thoughtful beverage program anchored by its renowned resident bar, The Gin Room.

LadueNews.com | August 19, 2022 55 Washington, Missouri, will soon welcome a three-day celebration of ink on paper: the inaugural Missouri Book Festival. Just under 50 miles west of Ladue, that celebration will run from Thursday, Aug. 25, to Saturday, Aug. 27, and feature a ticketed keynote event entitled “Fall and Rise: Conversations With Rick Ankiel and Friends,” wherein the former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher and outfielder will discuss his roller coaster career and his memoir, “The Phenomenon.” Kristy Stoyer chairs the festival committee and says the event “continues to grow as more people become aware and want to be involved.” Stoyer provides insider details for LN readers about the event and its origins. What prompted the creation of the festival? The idea of the festival was inspired by the Family Reading Night event hosted in Washington, which is always a well-attended and fun event that encourages the joy of reading. The first-ever Missouri Book Festival will bring our region’s most exciting and emblematic stories to life. The festival will highlight regional history, food, music, sports, art and more through interactive programs presented by Missouri authors. Our hope is that the Missouri Book Festival will spark passion for reading while inspiring future generations of Missourians to become lifelong learners. What particular age group, if any, is the festival targeting – and how is it doing so? The festival really is [for] people of all ages. We have seven hours of children’s programming taking place in the backyard at Neighborhood Reads bookstore, in addition to other interactive youth activities taking place within the festival. We have dedicated programs that are targeted more to adults. We will have a veterans-focused panel featuring two authors who both wrote about their fathers’ service – “Jumping From Helicopters: A Vietnam Memoir” [by John Stillman with Lori Stillman] and “In the Company of Patriots” [by Virginia Brackett]. There will also be an Ozark-focused panel discussion titled “The Ozarks in Print and Perception: Imagining a Region in Book.”
What will be the major attractions at the festival, the ones that will have attendees both young and old most enthralled? We have nearly 30 different programs planned during the seven-hour festival, with a wide variety of audiences in mind. One attraction that might be more unusual to see at a book festival would include our live wrestling event, tied to [Ed Wheatley’s] “Wrestling at the Chase,” a book about the iconic wrestling events that took place at the Chase Park Plaza [in St. Louis’ Central West EndWe’reneighborhood].alsoplanning a soapbox derby exhibition race as part of the festival, which will be fun for all ages – the last time a soapbox derby race was held in Washington was 1964. The Purina Incredible Dog Team will be at the festival, tied to the book “Lily: A True Story of Courage and the Joplin Tornado” [by Carolyn Mueller], about a service dog who aided the search efforts of the [2011] JoplinWe’lltornado.alsohave a food demonstration stage, where we’ll have a variety of engaging programing throughout the day, including the charismatic Father Dominic [Garramone], author of “Baking Secrets From the Bread Monk.” ln For an up-to-date schedule of events, visit missouribookfestival.com.

“Confederates” will be produced in association with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, with performances from Feb. 10 through March 5.
By Mark Bretz
Closing the mainstage season will be Ken Ludwig’s adaptation of Agatha Christie’s “Murder on the Orient Express,” with the relentless Hercule Poirot seeking the killer of an American tycoon aboard the fabled train. “Murder on the Orient Express” will shuttle audiences on its thrill ride from March 17 through April 16.

SHOW AND TELL
A $1 million campaign in 2019 to endow Studio Theatre programming ensured that The Rep “can continue to provide cutting-edge work in an intimate, black box-style space,” according to the press release. “With a flexible stage and seating, the intimate setting of the studio allows for a more impactful exploration of experimental modes of performance or the staging of new writing.” ln
It begins Aug. 26 with “House of Joy,” an adventure fantasy by Madhuri Shekar “set in some time like 1666, in some place like Delhi, India,” about a guard who joins the emperor’s army in a dazzling utopia, which she discovers is more prison than paradise. “House of Joy” will play Sept. 18 at The Rep’s long-time home, the LorettoHilton Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of Webster University. After that comes a classic comedy of manners, Noel Coward’s “Private Lives,” from Sept. 30 through Oct. 23 at the Berges Theatre. The story follows Amanda and Elyot as they enjoy a romantic honeymoon, until the divorced couple discover they share adjoining hotel balconies with their respective new spouses. Old passions, which led to their marriage and subsequent divorce, are reignited with amusing results. Back at the Loretto-Hilton, The Rep will bring its second annual presentation of Michael Wilson’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” to the mainstage from Nov. 18 through Dec. 30. The Rep will return in the new year with “Putting It Together: A Musical Review” at the Berges Theatre from Jan. 27 through Feb. 19. The revue features nearly 30 of composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim’s best-known Broadway tunes. Next, back at the Loretto-Hilton, will be Dominique Morisseau’s time-bending new drama, “Confederates.” It tells the intertwined stories of an enslaved woman turned Union spy during the Civil War and a modern-day tenured professor at a private university, each battling institutional racism, albeit a century and a half apart.
In April, The Rep will add the Strauss Black Box Theatre at the Kirkwood Performing Arts Center to its list of venues, when it debuts its new Steve Woolf Studio Theatre season with Rajiv Joseph’s “Gruesome Playground Injuries.” The story recounts the accidental adventures, both physical and psychological, of Doug and Kayleen from their initial meeting as 8-year-olds in the school infirmary to 30-something adults years later. “Gruesome Playground Injuries” will run from April 14 through May 7.
The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis added the new Catherine B. Berges Theatre at COCA (Center of Creative Arts) to its list of venues last year and will perform at a third locale in the upcoming season, when it resumes its Studio Theatre series – now renamed the Steve Woolf Studio Series in honor of The Rep’s late artistic director. Woolf, who died last year, helmed the troupe for 35 years before retiring in 2019. The Rep states in a press release that it is “thrilled to welcome audiences back this fall with a season filled with world-class productions, a joyful mix of classics featuring tributes to theatrical icons and new works from powerhouse voices of the 21st century.”

St. Louisan Dr. Amar Shere shares details from his experience on NBC’s new reality competition show, “Dancing With Myself.” Andrea Smith courtesy of Dr Amar Shere
Heart for DANCE
By

How did you get connected with and chosen as a contestant on “Dancing With Myself”?
I guess they saw my TikToks, because I make all of these dance TikToks and educational [heart health] TikToks, and they really loved that and reached out to me, asking me if I would be interested in being on this show. I still had to audition and go through the screening process. I basically said, “OK, sure! I don’t really know how far I’ ll get I’m just a doctor.” How did you prepare to go onstage?
SPOILER ALERT: You didn’t win, but you made it to the final six of your competition group. And you made a fan out of Nick Jonas, considering he repeatedly called you out as someone who caught his eye and as someone who deserved to continue in the competition. Describe that experience and what stands out the most from your time onstage. It was such an exhilarating feeling to dance onstage in front of the judges and the audience. If you watch the show, you knew that I was in the red after the first round I felt like I really gave it my all The red was definitely a surprise, but hearing all the judges’ comments and feedback, I stayed hopeful that maybe I can continue on Some of the clips didn’t get shown on TV, but I definitely pulled out a lot of tricks in my freestyle round [and] different styles of dance. Unfortunately, again, it wasn’t enough [to win the studio audience vote]. At that time, I had no idea I was up against such an amazing dancer, and again the judges gave [positive] feedback and ended up saving me. This experience allowed me to meet some amazing people from all walks of life who share the same passion for dance as I do, which was the biggest win for me. The best part of the experience was dancing with my episode show cast, who became family over a few days. We all cheered each other on and all brought a unique style of dance to the stage. What do you hope people learn from seeing you on TV and through other public platforms? You can be a dancer and be in a different career background I also hope people watching me are inspired to just move more and add a daily dose of dance for a healthier heart! To watch Shere on “Dancing With Myself,” go to nbc. com/dancing-withmyself and play Episode 3. This interview has been condensed and edited according to LN editorial style. In St. Louis, Dr. Amar Shere has danced in front of small crowds as a BollyX dance fitness instructor at the city’s Yes Honey Studio while entertaining much larger virtual audiences on social media, garnering at least 112,500 followers and 1.1 million likes on TikTok alone.
The day of, I was a nervous wreck. Just the thought of dancing in front of, you know, my celebrity crushes and millions of people was obviously making me nervous. But I was super excited. I really thought about how big of an opportunity this was. [It was] the opportunity of a lifetime to be able to share my story, my culture and my passion for dance and not only that, but people actually see me as a doctor, not just as a dancer. I am not a professional dancer, and that’s the whole purpose of this show to show that you don’t have to be a professional dancer to make it on TV, to win or to be part of this competition I told myself even if I just get to round one, I’m going to be happy because this is such a big opportunity.
Shere is a cardiovascular disease fellow at Saint Louis University School of Medicine who spends most of his days treating patients at SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital. But this summer, Shere hit the dance floor on NBC’s new reality dance competition, “Dancing With Myself,” where he sported his white coat and wide smile in front of celebrity judges Nick Jonas, Shakira and Liza Koshy. Here, Shere answers a few questions about his TV debut.
