Get lucky enough to be pulled into Susan Celeslie’s orbit, and you’ll feel the force of her energy through every ounce of marrow in your bones. And if that sounds like hyperbole, be assured, it’s all verified truth. She’s owned and operated an Aveda spa, opened a trendy coffeehouse, and beat transitional cell carcinoma. Today, she uses all that life history to help her design commercial and residential spaces, and while the technical All photos taken en by: b www.joshuam.co

term is “interior designer,” Susan says she’s really in the business of transformation. “The work I do is like a rebrand,” she says. “My clients know that who they were yesterday is not who they are today, and they want their space to match that transformation, but they don’t know how to do it on their own. That’s where I come in.” When she walks into a space, she almost always gets an instant feel for how a space should look. But she doesn’t rely on intuition alone. She discovers how her clients have grown and evolved, and then, she helps them step out of the comfort of their past. “My work is centered on creating a place my clients are proud of,” she says. “Like any great rebranding effort, design should reflect your life journey, but it should also align with all your growth and change throughout the years.”

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

O

ne year ago, my husband and I bought our first house. When I tell you we couldn’t wait to revive that 100-year-old Craftsman, I mean we starting ripping out carpet and picking paint colors the same hour we closed. What can I say? We’re determined to make this house our home – down to every last light fixture. Plus, it’s just so fun. Give me a year of quarantining, and I’ll give you a year’s worth of house projects. Needless to say, over the past year, I’ve learned quite a bit: that every task is harder than it looks, whether it’s laying hardwood floors or staining a front door; that “low-maintenance” landscaping can still break your heart; that I should’ve written “wallpaper application” into my wedding vows; and that I had never known patience until I had to wait for pandemic-related construction delays. Perhaps the No. 1 thing I’ve learned, however, is that making practical look pretty is nothing less than an art form. Enter ABODE’s newest department – Function & Form. In this gorgeously helpful new section of the magazine, you’ll get expert tips and tricks from metro area interior designers on how to make what you need fit into the design you want, from baby must-haves (Page 30) to fur-baby essentials (Page 24). Don’t get me wrong – I’ve found plenty of joy in my homeownership journey as well: the thrill of finally locating that perfect vintage piece that will tie everything together, the satisfaction of a storage solution that makes life easier, the instant Photo by Christina Kling-Garrett impact of a masterpiece finally hung on a blank wall, the heart-tugging feeling of making memories in a space you’ve created. And I am not sorry in the least to say that this edition of ABODE has only fed these new addictions. In these pages, we reveal our favorite local designers’ bestkept local shopping secrets (Page 18), advice on art collecting from those who have it mastered (Page 14) and the most important steps to take your outdoor entertainment space from drab to fab (Page 62). And if you’re anything like me and have adopted the unofficial hobby of scouring social media feeds for design inspiration, check out this season’s Inside Look department (Page 37), where we’ll give you a peek at metro area influencer Arin Jura’s Kirkwood renovation, and follow @laduenews for a video tour of her Insta-famous digs. I hope this issue of ABODE inspires you to make your house a home in all of the biggest and smallest ways … just as it did for me.

Happy living,

Emily Adams, Editor-in-Chief

Q &A

With DYLAN ROBBEN By Alecia Humphreys Photos by Timeless By Taylor Photography

Since his start, Dylan Thomas Robben of Dylan Thomas Interiors has set out to create one-of-a-kind spaces of any style. “One of the reasons why I started my own business was to not be honed in on a specific style,” Robben says. “I wanted to have the openness of being challenged with any style a client would throw my way.” Robben says he accomplishes this goal by catering to clients. “My clients are always the center of a design, not me,” Robben explains. “Their ideas and likes are very important to the design decisions for their home – which, in a way, would make my clients the root to the inspiration for all my designs.”

Must-Have “I think that every space needs one piece to bring everything together, whether it be artwork, a throw pillow or an area rug. I believe that doing so helps with the flow of the design and makes the room feel complete.”

Dylan Thomas Interiors, 618-604-3075, dylanthomasinteriors.com

The Beginning “Throughout my childhood and teen years, I was glued to the computer playing Sims while HGTV was on in the background. Most of my friends who also loved the game were more interested in creating the lives of the characters in the Sims game, while I was more focused on the homes. During my freshman year of high school, I was playing Sims with one of my friends, and she turned and said, ‘You should really think about going into this profession.’ Before that, I was contemplating the idea, but her comment is what fueled the fire to go for it.”

Pro Tip “It is all in the details! Whenever you are updating a space, try not to forget about the details that go along with it. With my projects, I specifically set aside time to look deeper into the details and see what I can tweak that will give a space a little ‘something extra.’ There is always excitement to see the finished project, and sometimes that will lead to feeling the need to rush. Usually, when you rush through things, the details seem to be put by the wayside – thus missing out on details that could bring your update to the next level of awesome. So while updating a room, remember two key things: Pay attention to the details, and do not rush the completion.”

What’s Trending? “I love that maximalism style is on the rise. After years of working with minimalism in designs, it is nice for there to be a change. Personally, I feel like with maximalism, there is more room for customization and personalization, which are both important factors in making a client’s space feel more tailored to them.”

Q &A With NISHA TAILOR

By Alecia Humphreys Photos by Corbie Photography From a young age, Nisha Tailor dreamed of being an artist and having her own exhibition. Today, she uses this creative vision to craft bold and beautiful spaces across St. Louis as part of her company, Nisha Tailor Interior Design. Photo by Danielle Corgan “I love to create spaces that spark conversations, emotions, depth and memories,” Tailor says, “and, of course, have functionality.” For Tailor, this provocative style is often accompanied by a lot of color. “They’re bold, colorful and conversational,” says Tailor of her designs. “My designs are tailored to the client’s needs. Also, as an Indian interior designer, I truly understand my culture’s beliefs, how they host social events, their lifestyle and entertain their guests. I was born and raised in Mumbai, India. I came here when I was 21 years old. So I totally lived and adopted both lifestyles. That’s why I am able to deliver my design that fits into their culture and lifestyle.” Tailor believes she’s selling more than just a design – she’s helping her clients to create a lifestyle, in a space that is equal parts “clean, fearless and alluring.”

Sparking Inspiration “I find inspiration through personal experiences that evoke emotions, things that we love to use or something that is sentimental or meaningful. These are the elements that inspire me the most to integrate into my design – making your own stamp.”

Going Green “My favorite design trend right now is the move toward an eco-friendlier approach, as people are moving toward warm tones, organic and natural elements, like bringing the outdoors indoor. The world has gone through lots of stress during the pandemic, and bringing soothing elements like pottery and green, exotic plants is a stress-buster – especially if you are working from home. Last year, I enjoyed collecting beautiful exotic plants for my office and home. It gives me so much joy and positive energy. I also love uncluttered design, too. Less is better.”

Nisha Tailor Interior Design, 636-866-7601, nishatailorinteriordesign.com

Maverick Maker “Try not to match everything, and don’t be afraid to break rules for designs. I love mixing different elements, patterns, colors and textures.” Photo by AP Photography

Recent Reno “My latest project is to finish a basement with a cool bar and make a stunning, large steam bathroom. I really enjoyed it, since the client had trusted me from the beginning with my bold design. They said, ‘Make it “wow,” and don’t worry about the budget.’ I knew my design was out of their comfort zone, but finally, it all came together just like how we envisioned it. We wanted to make sure family and guests will be enjoying the coming years and make memories.”

Mastering a

Masterpiece By Connie Mitchell | Photos courtesy of Mitchell Wall Architecture & Design

Want to start your art collection off right? Here’s where to begin and what you need to know.

W

here do I find what I’m looking for? Can I mix contemporary pieces with traditional furnishings? How do I know if it’s good quality? How do I work with my existing collection? These are a few of the questions clients ask Rachael Dolan and Marcia Moore. Both Dolan, a lead designer and interior architect with Mitchell Wall Architecture & Design, and Moore, owner and creative director of Marcia Moore Design, help clients create their ideal interiors, and selecting and displaying art are important parts of the process. “Before we begin the design process, we always take existing art into account to make sure it has the proper location that fits within the flow of design,” Dolan says. “This way, everything comes together and doesn’t feel like an afterthought.” While assessing existing pieces, Dolan keeps in mind that taste is completely subjective. She typically provides some preliminary pieces that work well with the overall design aesthetic and provide inspiration for the client. “[Providing those pieces] establishes guidelines so the client can look while on travels, or they have the option to purchase those preliminary pieces where they can feel confident that it goes with the design,” she says. Moore takes a similar approach by gathering a selection of art, presenting it to clients along with information about the specific properties of each piece, and ensuring they understand what pieces work with their design and why. “Once we narrow down the choices, I will draft an elevation of the room with the art sized for the wall it will be on, so my client can visualize the space,” she says. Choosing frames is the final step. In her years of helping people make artistic choices, Moore found that people might regret purchasing trendy items or art 14 | OCTOBER 2021 | ABODE | LADUENEWS.COM

that they don’t really love, even if it fits a space or color scheme. Art, she says, should be “timeless, and you absolutely need to love it.” Dolan agrees. “Buy art that is meaningful to you,” she says. “It will be a part of your daily life and should invoke a feeling, whether that be a fond memory or the cohesiveness of the overall palette. It doesn’t just have to be a particular color or style.” Also, she notes that art doesn’t always have to be a drawing or a painting – it could be a collection of pieces displayed in an artistic way. Dolan adds that bigger isn’t always better when it comes to selecting pieces for a large, blank wall. She emphasizes the importance of proper spacing and “breathing room” – not simply choosing something that will cover the space. “Sometimes, when there is too much art within a room, it can take away from a special vignette or moment,” Dolan says. “Not every wall needs a piece. Negative space is just as important as the art being displayed.” Moore points out that art is so personal, rules don’t really apply. She does recommend learning about the different genres of art and researching the type of art that is most appealing in order to understand what separates quality art from lesser pieces. “So many different pieces will work in one space – one large piece, a grouping, contemporary, traditional, real art or prints – the sky’s the limit,” Moore says. “My two hard-and-fast rules are you need to love it, and framing is critical. The perfect frame will make an inexpensive print look like a masterpiece, or the wrong frame can make a masterpiece look like a cheap print. Framing makes the art sing!” The bottom line, both designers agree, is that each piece of art in your collection should make you feel good when you see it each day – and only you can be the judge of that. Necessities Nook. Pick the perfect place for pet necessities, especially their dishes, Reyes recommends: “Incorporate a JCR Design Group photo by hidden toe-kick drawer with Alise O’Brien Photography their food bowls, [so it’s] still functional, but keeps the mess out of the way and the space looking beautiful.”

Sturdy Surfaces. Start by planning around the animals’ lives, Wyrock advises. “When there’s a plan for everything, it’s easier to keep things tidy,” he says. First, choose durable finishes that will perform well and hold up over time, Wyrock continues, adding: “Hardwood floors show scratches … Pick manmade materials, like LVT [luxury vinyl tile], porcelain products or pet-friendly carpet that can handle aggressive claws.”

Metro area designers share their tips for seamlessly designing around pet necessities. By Brittany Nay

O

ur four-legged friends are part of the family, but the necessities they need to make themselves at home don’t always complement their owners’ desired design. Luckily, local designers Danielle Kalish of Parklyn Interiors, Natalia Reyes of JCR Design Group and Michael Wyrock of Nistenhaus Design are sharing their expert tips for designing around fur-baby essentials that are both pet-tested and parent-approved.

Create a storage spot for furry-friend essentials, from leashes and toys to grooming tools, Kalish says: “I like to add in special details just for the fur babies in my clients’ lives … [such as making] sure the pet’s bed has a similar color palette and look as the rest of the room.”

Pet-Proof Pieces. Animals want to be treated the same as people, Wyrock says. “As soon as you have something with multiple layers, the mo ore interested they are in that particular area,” he h Nistenhaus Design photo by Shelly Goodman explains. “Layer in a bllanket or pillow that you can n throw t in the wash to save a piece of furniture.” And go the extra mile, K e, Kalish adds: “Have a local company put a protectant on as soon a it is delivered and before use. Protecting n as and treating your upho olstered furniture is the key to keeping it looking nice!”

Home Hideout. Bypass big, unsightly crates for a built-in kennel within custom cabinetry in the kitchen or laundry room, Reyes says: “[It’s] hidden, [and] keeps the space open and clean.” JCR Design Group photo by Alise O’Brien Photography

Fail-Safe Fabrics. Next, stay away from fabrics that attract pet hair, like suede or velvet, Reyes notes. “Textured and performance fabrics are a great camouflage to hide pet hair,” she explains. The Sweetest

SPACES By Brittany Nay | C&M Interiors photos by Corey Hogrefe with CH Studios; Karr Bick photos by BLKPhotography

TWO NEW MAMAS, BOTH OF THEM INTERIOR DESIGN MAVENS, REVEAL THEIR SECRETS FOR CREATING A NURSERY THAT PARENTS AND BABY ALIKE WILL LOVE. Two St. Louis designers, Channing Krichevsky of C&M Interiors and Ashley Obradovits of Karr Bick Kitchen + Bath, recently welcomed newborns, so they know firsthand how to make nurseries precious – yet practical. Step inside their infants’ sanctuaries as they share tips for fun, functional décor and adorable, useful organization elements that serve parents and baby alike.

CHANNING KRICHEVSKY, C&M INTERIORS When creating a nursery for her 5-month-old son, Wolf, Channing Krichevsky aimed for a classic, timeless room that fit into the aesthetic of their beloved 1907 Victorian home. “We made selections that felt mature, but also young and fresh for a little boy,” Krichevsky says, noting that her family avoided doing a typical blue, baby-ish boy room. “We used greens and taupes, and the rug is a burnt camel [color].” Because Krichevsky and her spouse steered clear of a literal theme, the jumping-off point for the whimsical but functional nursery was Ralph Lauren’s seaports wallpaper. “My husband is really into sailing,” Krichevsky says, adding that the space’s subtle nautical nods include a mirror with leather-and-brass details similar to a porthole. Making use of every inch of the small space, the C&M Interiors designer thoughtfully hand-picked quality, appropriately sized pieces, from the cute crib, with rope detail, tucked into the beautiful bay window to a compact, gray-painted wooden dresser, a slender vertical metal bookcase, and a felt-and-leather diaper caddy. “We made sure [Wolf] has open floor space to play as he grows,” Krichevsky notes. And for a personal touch, Krichevsky added two framed pieces of sentimental artwork. “One is calligraphy I did in Japan … It is Wolf ’s name in Japanese,” she explains. “The other is a song my dad, who is a musician, wrote for my brother and I when we were kids.” C&M Interiors, 937 Midland Blvd., St. Louis, 314-328-1923, candminteriors.com 32 | OCTOBER 2021 | ABODE | LADUENEWS.COM

ASHLEY OBRADOVITS, KARR BICK KITCHEN + BATH Last spring, Ashley Obradovits designed a sweet space for her second daughter. “Nurseries are so fun to design,” the Karr Bick designer says. “It’s where parents feel they can get outside their design aesthetic and take more chances, and the end results are always rewarding.” For a pretty yet practical nursery, Obradovits and her husband, Michael, desired a design that left room for their 6-month-old, Charlotte, to grow up like her big sister, 3-year-old Piper. “I lean away from the nursery designs with airplanes, zoo animals and large decals because they only last for a few years before you feel you need to update the space,” she explains. Instead, Obradovits started with a lovely chinoiserie wallpaper and added traditional wainscotting, painted pale pink. “My daughter’s nursery is the most envied room in our house at the moment,” she notes. Obradovits advises parents not to overdo, but trickle in themed elements. “The nursery essentials are a crib, rocking chair [and] dresser with changing table essentials,” she explains, noting nursery items can be stored in beautiful ways within your theme, like her little one’s scalloped wicker baskets for soft toys and blankets, wicker hooks on the backs of doors for hanging bows, and short baskets to slide under the crib for extra sheets and diapers. To add character, swap complete furniture sets for mix-and-match new and old pieces, Obradovits says, noting that it’s also charming to incorporate personal heirlooms. “We used a mirror that has been in my family since the ’70s and had it repainted, and [a repainted] ceiling light [that] was in my room growing up. I love designs to evoke emotion and nostalgia.” Karr Bick Kitchen + Bath, 2715 Mercantile Drive, Brentwood, 314-645-6545, karrbick.com

PINK

By Andrea Smith | Photos courtesy of Arin Jura

A nationally renowned local blogger recently unveiled her daughter’s dreamy pink bedroom – the latest triumph in her quest to redesign a 150-year-old Kirkwood home.

W

hen visiting Arin Jura’s Kirkwood home, you’ll notice her signature design style before she even opens the door. Her pale pink front door features charming antique stained-glass windows and recently has been embellished with a rustic gold bumblebee, which coordinates with the gold bumblebee on the mailbox and the bumblebee throw pillow resting on the do-ityourself porch swing. “When we were designing the front porch and kind of picking our design elements, I wanted it to fit the age of the home and the charm, but I also wanted people to kind of know this is an Arin Solange home when they drive by,” she describes. To Jura’s 51,900 Instagram followers and thousands of Arin Solange at Home blog readers, she’s known as a DIY queen with a keen eye for clean, bright and “vintagemodern” interior design. Oh, and she loves pink. “Everyone who follows me knows I love pink,” she affirms. Jura’s current abode is about 150 years old, but it’s only been home to her family for about a year. She had hoped to have redesigned every nook and cranny by now, but she admits this home is still a work in progress. Individual projects keep Jura motivated, though, and they keep her followers hooked on her renovation hashtag, #arinsolangehistorichome, on Instagram. The potential of this older house is what drew her and her husband to it, she says, and it’s allowed her to embrace some

grandmillennial design preferences. “You kind of have to let a space speak to you,” Jura explains. “If you try really hard to work against architectural details of a home, then it’s just never going to look quite right. And the bones of this house are obviously very vintage. I just realized if I lean into that, everything will look so much more cohesive.” Jura’s latest design triumph, completing her 7-year-old daughter’s bedroom, involved working with the unconventional shape of a small, second-floor room with darling bay windows. “I was really adamant about making this both an aesthetically pleasing room but also really functional for her as a little girl – and something that was easy for her to keep clean and orderly so that I didn’t lose my mind on her,” Jura laughs. Jura guided her oldest daughter, Avé, through design decisions and let Avé’s paint choice, a pinkish Valspar Desert Bone, inspire the room’s aesthetic. That color now coats the ceiling and fills the arches painted on the wall behind Avé’s daybed. In a blog post, Jura writes that it’s “still very ‘pink’ but light enough to keep the room feeling tall and open. … I explained that we didn’t want to make the paint too dark and make her room feel like a cave.” Jura describes the curtains as being an ideal shade to complement the paint, and “the added tassel edge broke up the color a bit.” Elegant wall sconces bring a soft glow to the room when lit, and additional light is available overhead thanks to Jura’s DIY, PVC-pipe light fixture. Another DIY success, Avé’s dresser, is a revamped IKEA dresser with a floral, resin-mold design added to the drawers.

Additional practical details include a Beddy’s bedding set with zippers for easy bed-making, velvet floor poufs that double as stuffed-animal storage and a hanging rattan chair for lounging by the windows. Jura details all her décor picks at arinsolangeathome. com/valspar-desert-bone-bedroom. “Watching the kids’ rooms come to lifee h has been really fun over the years,” Jura reflects. cts. “My “ kids get so excited about it, especiallyy my m daughter. Avé really pace was hers again.” appreciated that her spa pa Jura complet eted her 9-year-old son’s bedroom first she’s working her way down the age lineup, and sayss sh her 4-year-old son’s and 2-year-old daughter’s with ith h rooms next in line. Blending home projects and motherhood with her career as a blogger and social media influencer sometimes triggers “mom guilt,” Jura confesses, so she’s working toward better balance in the future – perhaps with a shared full-time gig with her husband, Sam Jura, who thrives with power tools and often helps make her DIY dreams a reality. “I needed something that I had control of in terms of success, where my success wasn’t just how my kids are doing, because I realized sometimes that’s out of your control,” Jura says about why she started blogging. “I just wanted something for me. I thought it was just going to be a hobby, but it’s not a hobby anymore. It’s a full-time job.” Just as her interior design taste has changed over time, her career goals have evolved a bit, too: “I want to look back on how hard I’ve worked, knowing that it was to build a happy home.” Arin Solange at Home, arinsolangeathome.com

JESSIE D. MILLER TRANSFORMED “A GROUP OF ACCIDENTAL FURNISHINGS” INTO A STUNNING LUXURY DESIGN IN THIS DES PERES HOME. By Bethany Christo | Photos by Alise O’Brien

L

uxury is about what you feel, not what you see,” summarizes Jessie D. Miller Interior Design’s namesake on her “Zimmerman House” redesign. The stunning Des Peres home was built in the ’60s, partially burned down in 1983 and then was minorly remodeled following that, by the previous owners. After this recent four-month project wrapped up in July 2020, however, the space was transformed from a mismatched home filled with random inherited and adopted furniture into a curated, cohesive, comfortable space, including select art from Miller’s own collection.

“The homeowners’ stories reminded me of all kinds of cherished treasures I have been saving for years,” Miller says. “The Zimmerman art collection ended up including everything from vintage equestrian paintings and sketches, editorial photography and even an oversized black-and-white abstract that my mother, Janet Miller, painted for me when I first moved into my current apartment.” Miller felt so connected to the stories and backgrounds of the Zimmerman homeowners because of her professional process – as well as a bit of serendipity. After meeting the couple at a Christmas party hosted in the house she’d previously designed for another client, an instant connection was made, and Miller got to work finding out how the couple met, why they selected their house, their cultures and the families they grew up around, the music and restaurants they like and, of course, “a snoop in the closets,” according to Miller. “The homeowners are pretty much my dream clients,” she says. “They are a fun-loving, down-toearth, sporty-yet-fashionable married couple with

three young sons. Working with this family was completely effortless; through the entire process, they were open-minded, adventurous, yet realistic and direct communicators.” The homeowners echo this sentiment right back at Miller: “I am ecstatic with how Jessie transformed our home,” one of the homeowners says. “She really understands what her client is saying, and she was able to incorporate a lot of our heirloom and investment pieces, while giving our home a whole new look that turned out even better than we could have dreamed.” For the Zimmerman redesign, the couple was completely open to Miller’s creative direction and requested only that she incorporate quite a few of their existing pieces into the new design. These included sentimental heirloom pieces, like the entry-room foyer’s antique round side table, which was given a glossy, contemporary makeover in collaboration with the team at The Resplendent Crow in University City, as well as existing statement pieces like a monolithic scaled leather sectional sofa or a pair of paisley upholstered Louis-style club chairs, all of which could have posed a challenge for a less-adept designer. “With some strategic spatial planning and intense textile searching, a group of accidental furnishings found their friends, and a perfect, curated design was created,” Miller says. Miller says that, without a doubt, her favorite aspect of the new design is the hand-painted mural in the main bedroom, with its brushstrokes of white and soft neutrals evoking both movement and calm simultaneously, which was completed by Miller’s friend and colleague, local artist Susan Greene of Paint Imagery. “The result is one of my all-time personal favorite spaces I’ve ever executed,” Miller says. “Client envy is something I rarely experience, but oh, baby, I would love to fall asleep and wake up in that room.” Although the stunning wall mural tops her list, Miller also highlights some of the more subtle design elements as having just as much of an impact in the home – for example, the grasscloth wallcovering in the living room. Miller explains that, though it cost more, it boasts incredible color dimensions with which painted drywall could never compete.

44 | OCTOBER 2021 | ABODE | LADUENEWS.COM

Miller also gave special treatment to the previously lonely entryway and oft-ignored front doors (as most families come in through the garage) that she considers defining moments of the entire home. “They act as an opportunity to welcome visitors with an immediate visual impression of what your family is all about,” she says. The crown jewel of the Zimmerman project is what Miller calls “the big daddy” – the black Calacatta marble fireplace mantel in the living room. “That sexy beast replaced a puny, builder-grade mantel surround that couldn’t hold its own,” Miller says, adding that it serves as a physically and visually heavy architectural element to ground and anchor what was previously a narrow, unorganized room. As for the homeowners’ reaction to the project, it was in line with their laid-back, appreciative and down-to-earth vibe. Genuinely grateful, impressed and proud of the work, “the fun-loving couple was sipping cocktails at the pool while we hustled to finish the install,” Miller says. “When they were allowed to come home for the anticipated reveal, they were still in their bathing suits. How fabulous is that?” Jessie D. Miller Interior Design, jessiedmiller.com

THIS FRONTENAC HOME WAS DESIGNED FOR EMPTY NESTERS WHO WERE READY TO EMBRACE LUXURY IN THEIR LIVES. By Brittany Nay Photos by Alise O’Brien Photography

O

nce two Frontenac doctors became empty nesters, they were ready to turn their outdated home into a luxury abode for the modern era. And after seeing the work of ADJ Interiors, the couple knew the St. Louis high-end residential interior design firm was up to the challenge of reviving their house caught in the ’80s. “They had raised their family there … and it was dated and needed an overhaul,” says April Jensen, firm founder and interior designer. “Since they became empty nesters, their lifestyle has changed so much, and their priorities were different.” While the dated floor plan made the new design difficult, it also gave ADJ possibilities. “It’s always difficult to make [a house with] an older floor plan work,” Jensen explains. “But the homeowners had lived there so long, they realized what they wanted and knew what didn’t work. So, it was a luxury being able to gut a house and implement changes you know [the homeowners have] been wanting.”

With busy work and social lives, the couple needed a long-lasting home renovation that could keep up with their on-the-go lifestyle. “The bones of that house could be in style for many years, and they wanted [the remodel] to have a 10to 15-year span where it was still looking great,” Jensen says. “That’s a minimum of what we shoot for because we know people invest a lot and we want to make them happy.” At the top of the homeowners’ wish list was plenty of beautiful, functional space to entertain guests. “They love to entertain and felt they didn’t have the space for that,” Jensen says. “They wanted to be really proud of their home when they were entertaining.” So ADJ delivered a new airy floor plan featuring a showstopping bar and kitchen, complete with custom cabinetry, an eye-catching backsplash and a massive island ideal for conversation with guests while the homeowners are cooking, all opening to a large living space showcasing a limestone fireplace and an impressive wall of windows looking out on the beautiful backyard and pool area. The firm tied together the spaces with natural wood

elements, including walnut ceiling beams and walnut bar stools from Italy, as well as pieces from the couple’s beloved art collection. While the homeowners desired a streamlined, modern design, they also wanted it to feel cozy for relaxing after long days at work. “They wanted to be able to go relax and sit in the living room and be comfy watching TV [with] a fire and a great view,” Jensen says. “So we [brought in] that American modern feel with great textures and great color.” This serene theme was then carried into the master suite. “They wanted the bedroom to be like a hotel getaway,” Jensen notes, adding it was there that ADJ faced its final hurdle with the former floor plan. “They wanted the bedroom to be on the back of the house, so we had to make an addition for the bathroom they dreamed of,” she says.

It was v very important for this to be a rretreat from their busy lives … and each night when they walk in, they’re really, really eally pleased with the outcome. – APRIL JENSEN

LADUENEWS.COM | ABODE | OCTOBER 2021 | 51

The result was a reimagined retreat boasting spa-like his-and-her marble vanities with ample counter space and a stunning freestanding bathtub beneath striking vaulted ceilings, as well as another important wish list item: expansive closets. As a cook herself, Jensen’s favorite part of the project is the jewel of the house’s hub. “I spend so much time in my kitchen, I’d give anything to have that long island,” she says, adding that any spouse knows you can’t beat having dedicated bathroom counter space separate from your significant other. “Every single design has to function to the capacity the [homeowners] want,” Jensen notes. “You can make anything beautiful, but if they don’t work, so what?” In the end, ADJ made the couple’s longtime home look like a brand-new abode, Jensen says. And months later, the couple is still loving their dream house. “They are very happy and proud of their home,” she notes. “It was very important for this to be a retreat from their busy lives … and each night when they walk in, they’re really, really pleased with the outcome.” ADJ Interiors, 2800 S. What’s

OLD IS By Bethany Christo Photos by Megan Lorenz Photography

B

THANKS TO CAREFUL, INTENTIONAL UPGRADES FROM SAVVY DESIGN GROUP, THIS 1903 CENTRAL WEST END HOME WILL BE ADMIRED FOR CENTURIES TO COME.

uilt 118 years ago, the rich history of the “city mansion” served as an inspiration and a foundation for modernizing and redesigning this home in St. Louis’ Central West End Historic District. Finding that balance between old and new was the focus for the project’s interior designer, Brett Clark, and its project manager, Ellen Lancia, both of Savvy Design Group. “The true aesthetic of the house is a melding of the timeless and the current to create a welcoming and elegant interior,” Clark says. “The new homeowners sought to strike a balance between preserving the home’s original craftsmanship and reimagining an interior that felt current and functional.” A perfect example of this successfully executed is in the kitchen. Much of the structure of the historic 1903 home was unchanged to preserve the integrity of the building. However, the kitchen required a structural modification to relocate the back staircase to make more space and increase functionality, as well as to enhance the connection between the kitchen and adjacent family room in a more-open layout. The final design strikes a balance between traditional, industrial and contemporary elements. The dark double range and overhead hood dominate the center of the space and feature a strong contrast between mixed metal finishes that effortlessly balance with bright white wood cabinets designed in collaboration with Christine Paul of Ladue’s Alspaugh Kitchen & Bath. Another unique cabinet choice was the column of warm wooden walnut-and-glass cabinets and drawers that prominently rest on the kitchen countertop on two solid wooden legs, inspired by original cabinetry found in the butler’s pantry and rediscovered in blueprints of the property.

The rejuvenation of the dark and dated grand foyer and dining room was another standout success in the Savvy team’s vision. “The stained deep-brown wood paneling, although a beautiful original detail, was showing its age,” Clark says. “Our decision to paint the millwork in both spaces truly transformed the first floor. The light wall color that we selected for the millwork in the space brightened the rooms, made the areas feel more expansive and brought even more attention to the ornate and handcrafted

details of the woodwork.” The Savvy team also brought attention to and drew design inspiration from the city mansion’s rich past. For example, the original owner was an aviation enthusiast with a passion for hot air balloons. Clark and company paid this homage in the wallcovering selected for the first-floor powder room, which features a pattern of brightly colored and whimsical hot air balloons situated between the original, structured, Carrera marble sink basin and stained-glass window.

However, sometimes a beautiful structure and historic architecture are not enough – it takes a keen design eye to draw out the full potential, as the team did with the solarium. “We decided to reinforce the solarium’s connection with the outdoor gardens in the backyard,” Clark says. “We commissioned a local artist, Susan Greene with Paint Imagery, to envelop the space with a one-of-a-kind mural that brought breathtaking botanicals into the space. Her paint technique leaves you feeling as if this detail were original to this century-old space.” The biggest challenge with any historically significant home is finding harmony between holding onto original details and providing clients with

updated spaces to fit their modern lifestyle, and Clark’s greatest takeaway was being able to restore and re-imagine the city mansion more than a century after it was built. “The new owners have become the new caretakers of this piece of architecturally significant history in the city of St. Louis,” Clark says. “The homeowners were thrilled that we were able to both highlight the original craftsmanship while also making this expansive home feel inviting, welcoming and up-to-date, and we were honored to put our stamp on a property that will likely be admired a century later.” Savvy Design Group, 9810 Clayton Road, St. Louis, 314-432-7289, savvyladue.com

FALL CREATE THE PERFECT OUTDOOR ENTERTAINMENT SPACE FOR FALL WITH THESE EXPERT TIPS.

By Connie Mitchell | Photos by Alise O’Brien hen last year’s COVID-19 concerns caused people to seek safe outdoor activities well into autumn, many homeowners made a discovery: Outdoor entertaining is delightful. As the trend continues, creating a beautiful, cozy outdoor entertainment space is a priority for many metro area residents. LADUENEWS.COM | ABODE | OCTOBER 2021 | 63

One of the great joys of life is sitting around a burning fire while roasting marshmallows and sipping hot chocolate with friends and loved ones. – Ken Stuckenschneider, principal designer of Stuckenschneider Decoration & Design Before jumping in, take stock of your existing setup, advises Ken Stuckenschneider, principal designer of Stuckenschneider Decoration & Design. Consider which area has the best views, whether the seating area is conveniently near the kitchen, the path guests will take to access the patio or deck, the balance of sun and shade and the landscaping surrounding the space. “The most important element for creating an outdoor fall entertainment space is utilizing an area that overlooks beautiful fall foliage or autumnal flowers,” Stuckenschneider says. “It is also important to have a designated area for the fire pit for warmth. One of the great joys of life is sitting around a burning fire while roasting marshmallows and sipping hot chocolate with friends and loved ones.” Stuckenschneider favors old-fashioned wood fires for their ambiance, warmth and crackle, but he adds that propane fires have become increasingly attractive and popular. “I prefer to custom-design them for the homeowner to create something unique and special,” he says. “My favorite fire-pit materials are stone, brick and hand-forged steel.” In terms of seating and layout, Stuckenschneider recommends surrounding the fire pit with at least six comfortable

chairs that have wide arms. A separate area features a sofa and additional chairs, and a dining table that seats eight is also an important furnishing. With plenty of room to comfortably relax and a warm, atmospheric fire as a focal point, homeowners should then embellish the space with seasonal floral displays and planters. “My favorites are natural Italian terra cotta pots, as well as copper, bronze or zinc planters,” Stuckenschneider says. “Painted Versailles planter boxes are always a classic and timeless choice, as well as Italian marble fragments. As for the foliage, it is important to have something beautiful for you and your guests to see as you gather outside. I recommend chrysanthemums, ornamental cabbage and colorful pansies.” No matter your style for creating an outdoor space, Stuckenschneider advises using natural materials whenever possible, selecting furniture that ages well and will hold up to the elements and using colors that blend with the natural landscape. Then sit back, sip that cocoa and enjoy a crisp, fall evening with friends. Stuckenschneider Decoration & Design, 9785 Clayton Road, Ladue, 314-726-2000, stuckenschneider.com
