I don’t know about you, but it’s always right around this time of year when I want nothing more than to escape for just a bit. Maybe it’s the bitter cold, or the stress of the holiday season, or the early production deadlines for Ladue News due to that holiday season, but nothing sounds better to me in this moment than to just get away. That’s probably why LN contributor Brittany Nay’s feature, starting on Page 20, about a local boutique luxury travel company, which helps area residents plan trips that renew their mind, body and spirit, calls to me this edition. Well Inspired Travels is co-owned by retired St. Louis Blues player Chris Pronger and his wife, Lauren, a multicertified health coach – both of whom became experts in the travel field after years of their own experiences. For an escape closer to home, flip to Page 66, where LN contributor Drew Gieseke reveals the gorgeous speakeasy-inspired private bar and lounge at The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis in Clayton. The Cigar Club was recently honored at the 2021 Hospitality Design Awards – and the photos in this edition show why. Looking for more of a virtual getaway? LN staff writer Amanda Dahl showcases Alexis Austin’s dream home in Kirkwood starting on Page 47. The owner of Curio Press has invited her more than 11,000 Instagram fans along on her new-build journey that has the LN staff more than a little starry-eyed. Wishing you and yours a very happy holiday season,

hether you’re seeking different diamond cuts, colored stones or different colors of metals, when it comes to layering jewelry, the sky is the limit. Genovese Jewelers has everything you need to update your style or find the perfect gift for the special someone on your list. “Most people start with white gold and then go to yellow,” says executive buyer Katie Kelly. Yellow gold has grown more popular in recent years, but Kelly points out that it’s a classic metal throughout history that will never go out of style. Furthermore, the current fashion of stacking allows people to re-create new designs out of older pieces. “It’s timeless; you can take your mother and grandmother’s pieces and mix it in seamlessly,” Kelly says. For the more adventurous fashionista, the trend of rose gold is also popular, and mixing textures with yellow, rose and white gold can create dynamic looks and make diamonds pop even more. “Right now, paperclip chains are extremely popular,” Kelly adds. “Diamond tennis necklaces paired with paperclip chains is a style we’ve seen a lot of people wearing.” Yellow gold has also been a popular metal for Genovese’s NOVIA collection of custom jewelry. And right now is the best time to stop by Genovese to shop for the holiday season. The local, family-owned jewelers strive to make shopping with them as easy as shopping on Amazon – and twice as fun. Saturdays throughout the holidays feature live music and cocktails to create a festive, stress-free atmosphere. If you need something delivered to your house, office or wherever is most convenient for you, you can rest assured knowing Genovese will handle everything. With an expansive collection featuring all the shades of gold, colored stones and the highest quality diamonds – available at any price point – Genovese is ready to make your holiday purchase a gift to remember. KIDS MD
SOCIAL SAVVY By Dr. Joseph Kahn
A
s doctors and parents, we have all seen the negative impact of social media on our kids. It’s become even clearer with recent revelations published in The Wall Street Journal, and testimony given to Congress by a former Facebook employee suggests that the platform may have been aware of possible harmful effects on its young and maturing users for a long time now. Although you see your adolescent children as treasures to be guided into adulthood, Facebook views them as a “valuable but untapped audience.” Facebook might not be the top social media choice of kids these days, but its employee’s recent comments offer a bit of insight into what makes these types of companies tick. For better or worse, social media continues to be a part of many of our lives. The big question is, what can you, as parents and protectors of your kids, do to help kids make the best decisions about social media use, especially when social media sites themselves may be more interested in profit than in your child’s mental health? Social media data shows that these products can adversely affect the body image of vulnerable youths. The focus on appearance by sites such as Instagram can have a powerful negative effect on teens already susceptible to body image issues. Because social media algorithms recognize extreme controversial content, users also need to be aware of possible
misinformation and inappropriate content. The American Academy of Pediatrics’ Council on Communications and Media offers many suggestions and says that opening a dialogue with your kids and teens about their social media use is the first step: Ask them about any challenges they see on social media. Teach them about values and relationships, the important things in life, and talk about how social media supports or conflicts with these lessons. Encourage them to take breaks from social media and interact with friends in other ways. Face-to-face interactions are still critical. Be sure they are comfortable coming to you when disturbing things are seen on social media. For additional information, visit healthychildren.org.

BUSINESS NOTES
Inclusive WORKPLACES By Connie Mitchell
O
n entering three shops in Kirkwood, customers may notice a window sticker that states: “This business fosters a workforce of diverse abilities.” Sammysoap, The Pioneer Bakery Cafe and Schnucks Kirkwood are the first businesses bestowed with the “diverse abilities” recognition, and Kirkwood’s Human Rights Commission plans to identify additional businesses that employ or train people with a variety of physical and cognitive disabilities. Robert Boyd, an HRC member, helped develop the program. He credits two community members, Doug Riggs and Brandie Martine, with originating the idea about seven years ago. “It was really their baby to start with,” Boyd says. Other individuals instrumental in building the program include Anne Carroll, John Hoffmann, Josh Lewis, the late Denis Hart and Verneda Carrier. Program planning took time due to administrative hurdles and the COVID-19 pandemic, which put the brakes on the project just as the commission was about to launch it, but Boyd hopes the program picks up speed during the coming months.

The Human Rights Commission believes that it is important to recognize employers who have already hired those with diverse abilities. GEOFF MORRISON, HRC CHAIRMAN “With Sammysoap, Pioneer Bakery and Schnucks all displaying the ‘diverse abilities’ window sticker, we hope other business owners and customers of businesses that employ people with diverse abilities come forward so we can recognize them, too,” he says. Boyd adds that Kirkwood plans to have a formal recognition ceremony at some point in the future, although a date has not yet been set. “The Human Rights Commission believes that it is important to recognize employers who have already hired those with diverse abilities,” HRC
Chairman Geoff Morrison says. “We also hope this initiative will promote this practice and make those with different abilities more visible and valued.” Boyd invites anyone – business-owner or patron – to contact the HRC with suggestions for other area businesses that would be eligible for the ‘diverse abilities’ recognition. “We’re really eager to identify these important businesses in our community, and we want people to be aware of this recognition for those places,” he says. To nominate a business for recognition, contact the Human Rights Commission through Mary Claire Sorenson at sorensmc@kirkwoodmo.org or through the HRC web page on the Kirkwood municipal website at kirkwoodmo.org/humanrights.

Caroline
is a picture of collaboration. When Caroline was 7 years old, she developed a life-threatening infection — and St. Louis Children’s Hospital was the only place that could save her. One of our own experts, Dr. Remy, traveled with Caroline in the emergency transport to ensure she was ready to be treated immediately. Upon Caroline’s and Dr. Remy’s arrival to St. Louis Children’s, a team of specialists quickly went into action, connecting Caroline to an innovative life support technology that kept her alive for 43 days. Over that time, more than 40 doctors and 70 nurses with different medical expertise worked together with one purpose: treating and rehabilitating Caroline. Today, Caroline is a thriving 11-year-old — a picture of hope. But her story wouldn’t be possible without the support of donations to St. Louis Children’s. We invite you to help more kids like Caroline. Give today and be part of the big picture.

During the program, students develop their public speaking and leadership skills through on- and off-campus coursework and mentorship. Participants also attend an eight-week Dale
Carnegie course, which focuses on building communication skills for businesspeople and students alike. The inaugural Glassman Leaders Program students are Evie Doles (class of 2023) and Dean Warren (class of 2022). “We believe that the Glassman Leaders Program will enrich the leadership curriculum within Whitfield’s Habits of Mind & Heart program,” Edwards adds. “It will further encourage opportunities for students to develop as leaders, allowing them to make a difference, take a stand and become role models for others.”

ROBERT GLASSMAN PHOTO BY BRIAN ZAGER
early two decades after graduating, a Whitfield School alumnus is giving back with an invaluable new opportunity. The Glassman Leaders Program was launched in 2021 by 2002 graduate Robert Glassman. It’s designed to make a difference in the lives of current and future students – as well as the school itself. “Whitfield made me realize my potential – it helped me become confident in who I was and what I was capable of doing,” says Glassman in a press release announcing the program. As a trial attorney in Los Angeles, Glassman litigates large and complex personal injury, wrongful death and product defect cases on behalf of individuals, and this year, he was recognized as one of The Best Lawyers in America by the peer-review service of that name. The alumnus first met with John Delautre, Whitfield’s head of school, to explore how he could make a difference for the school. This initial meeting kicked off conversations among Whitfield’s advancement team, and soon, they’d settled on creating a program that matched Glassman’s passions and philanthropic goals with the priorities of the school. “At the core of our school are people of integrity, vision, humor and generosity,” says Kelly Edwards, director of development at Whitfield. “Our academic program is rooted in character education, delivered through the Habits of Mind & Heart curriculum. This curriculum encourages critical reflection for academic and personal growth, deepens social and emotional intelligence, and shapes the personal strengths of our students so that they have the resilience and moral awareness to be effective citizens and leaders.” The Glassman Leaders Program is designed to supplement and advance these goals. Juniors and seniors who have participated or currently are participating in Whitfield’s Leadership Development Series can apply for the program. ell Inspired Travels wants to make your wildest travel dreams come true. The global luxury travel company is co-owned by retired St. Louis Blues player, Hockey Hall of Famer, Stanley Cup winner and two-time Olympic gold medalist Chris Pronger and his wife, Lauren, a multicertified health coach. Well Inspired Travels tailors each trip with custom wellness experiences for transformative travels at hidden gems and sought-after destinations around the world. “We offer anything from girlfriends’ getaways to immersive wellness retreats to bachelor parties to honeymoons,” says Lauren Pronger, whose certifications include the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, Wellness Tourism Association, Nutritious Life, American Association of Drugless Practitioners, Lagree Fitness and Juvo Board. “We encourage clients to try something new … [to push] yourself out of your comfort zone. If you’re scared of heights, do a ropes course, or for high-stress CEOs and athletes, we can find tranquil properties with wellness offerings.” Whether it’s a mountain adventure, seaside retreat or metropolitan excursion, the boutique travel business offers families, couples and small groups, such as corporate leadership teams, easy access to luxurious VIP amenities and personalized travel, from private plane charters to yacht cruises, all so they can focus on wellness, growth and bonding opportunities that refresh their minds, bodies and spirits. “We want to help people get the most out of their travel experience, whether they’re foodies or adventure junkies,” Chris Pronger says. “Whether you’re an athlete, entertainer, CEO or business owner, we all go through a very similar path and pressure points … It’s about understanding who they are and steering them toward the right destination.” In 2018, the Prongers’ passion for wellness coupled with their travel bug led them to launch Well Inspired Travels. During Chris Pronger’s 18-year NHL career – which included a

decade with the St. Louis Blues, who will retire his No. 44 jersey in January – Lauren Pronger was along for the ride. “Chris always had the pressure to perform and always be the best of the best, so he was regimented in eating a certain way and working out a certain way,” she explains. That gave her an idea: to plan their trips as a couple and later as a family (with three kids, now teens – Jack, George and Lilah) around places that focused on wellness, from healthy cuisine in various dietary styles to physical activities such as different yoga disciplines. Soon, Lauren Pronger says Chris’ fellow professional athletes and their wives were asking her to book similar getaways for their families: “People would start to reach out to me, saying my husband is the same way [in his diet and training regimen] and asking, ‘Can you plan the same trip for us?’” What started as a fun favor for friends organically evolved into Well Inspired Travels, with Lauren Pronger at the creative helm and Chris Pronger handling the business side, while the company’s name emerged from her late father’s wellness travel journey. “When I was a little girl … my father was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer, and he had three young kids with my mom at the time,” she recalls. “Doctors gave him a year or two to live … and he said, ‘I want to go see the world.’” The family fulfilled her dad’s wishes. During the summers when he was off chemotherapy treatment, they traveled abroad throughout Europe, as well as Asia, where her dad learned about Eastern holistic medicine. “He was full of life and had his energy back,” she recalls, “so I looked to travel as almost a magical, healing power and saw the joy it brought to my family.” Lauren’s father went on to live cancer-free to age 70. These days, Lauren is proudly carrying on that wellness travel tradition with her own family and happily helping other families do the same through Well Inspired Travels. The Pronger family’s favorite treks have included horseback riding, mountain biking and fly fishing at adventurous locales such as Brush Creek Ranch in Wyoming, while Chris and Lauren Pronger have recharged at serene hideaways like Hotel Esencia in Mexico. “While you may not be doing your regular cardio or weightlifting routines,” she says, “being active in other ways can balance your mind, body and spirit.” Well Inspired Travels, wellinspiredtravels.com

GATHERINGS & GOODWILL THE NEXT STEP
SCHOLARSHIP CELEBRATION Photos and story by Christina Kling-Garrett
T
he Next Step recently hosted its annual scholarship celebration as a hybrid virtual and in-person event at the Sheraton Westport Chalet Hotel St. Louis. In-person guests enjoyed a social hour, dinner and program that included students sharing their stories of recovery and education. The event was livestreamed for guests at home and raised more than $272,000 to fund scholarships for the 2022-23 academic year. The Next Step, a St. Louis-based nonprofit, seeks “to provide tuition assistance to individuals active in a 12-step recovery program from alcohol or substance abuse who demonstrate financial need and are pursuing an academic or vocational education,” according to its website. Since 2005, The Next Step has awarded more than $1.5 million in scholarships to 695 students pursuing their dreams of education. Just this year, in fact, The Next Step has provided more than $171,000 in scholarships to 71 people in recovery. Visit LADUENEWS.COM to see more fabulous photos from this event!
ln
The Next Step believes education is one of the best ways to rise above addiction. Tonight was a celebration of our scholarship recipients as they continue to work hard to achieve their educational goals while also providing better lives for themselves, their families and the entire St. Louis community.

egardless of your background, art connects people with one another – and helps them find commonality and strengthen their communities. The St. Louis Jewish Community Center works to enrich lives through high-quality art experiences. “We want to provide an opportunity for the St. Louis region to experience, enjoy and be entertained by amazing art,” says Rabbi Brad Horwitz, Director, Jewish Engagement and Adult Programs. The J has an established history of providing high-end arts experiences to the metro area: Its New Jewish Theatre will celebrate its 24th season in 2022, the St. Louis Jewish Book Festival has been around for 43 years, and the St. Louis Jewish Film Festival is 27. While the theatre, as well as the book and film festivals, often incorporates Jewish themes, the J’s mission is to promote inclusivity through inviting the greater St. Louis area to join in any of its programs. “All cultural arts programs have high quality and a loyal audience,” says Eddie Coffield, the Artistic Director of New Jewish Theatre. “What we do is for the entire St. Louis region.” “We have a rich variety of programs that appeal to many people no matter your faith, background or where you’re from,” Horwitz confirms. “We strive to be inclusive and represent different cultures.” The St. Louis Jewish Film Festival
is currently virtual to accommodate COVID-19 restrictions while still retaining its audience. The films are an exploration of Jewish writers, characters and themes, and are not necessarily focused on the Jewish faith. “Our film festival is really an international film festival – maybe two films are from the United States, and the rest are from everywhere,” says Diane Maier, Director of Film and Performing Arts. “There are films of all genres and universal themes.” The book festival went online the same time as its film sibling, but returned this year as a hybrid model of online and inperson – with a negative COVID-19 test needed for the latter. “We’re seeing about even numbers in person and online,” Hilary Gan, Director of Literary Arts, confirms. “It’s difficult but we’ve done well.” Coffield adds that while COVID-19 did cause the New Jewish Theatre to shut down entirely, it is bouncing back and will be ready for a full 2022 season, including the world premiere of The Bee Play by emerging Jewish writer Elizabeth Savage. The J also has a youth theatre program that is open to all children and Theatre Unlimited for adults with disabilities. “The arts are a great place not just to learn but to escape – get immersed in whatever the content is,” Horwitz says. “As a community center, we know people’s lives are enriched when they get to have these experiences and escape from the day-to-day realities.” Cultural arts is just one of five areas of service the J provides to the community, alongside fitness, early childhood education, day/overnight camps and licensed programs for people with disabilities. The center also has a high standard of excellence it adheres to for everything, as well as one of the highest-quality facilities for any operation in the area. Whatever you come for, the J ensures you get the most out of your experience.
The J’s cultural arts offerings are outstanding – the highest quality. Our St. Louis region is quite fortunate to have them as part of our arts scene. I strongly recommend putting them on your must-see list.” – NaNCy KraNzbErg St. LouiS PatroN of thE artS

DESIGN ELEMENTS
A Moody Marvel By Alecia Humphreys

W
hen tasked with creating an elevated space for entertaining, Karen Korn of Karen Korn Interiors crafted this moody escape. “The client loves the menswear aesthetic and wanted the space to feel like an escape from the rest of the house,” Korn explains. “The couple [also] has grown children and wanted to encourage them to come home with a space that feels exciting with all of the things they would enjoy. There is a TV to watch movies and sports, a table to play games and a fully stocked bar.” So stocked, in fact, that Korn says one of the challenges of the design was accommodating the many appliances. “The client wanted to store about 600 bottles of wine in wine refrigerators on one of the walls,” Korn says. “So a lot of the usable
space was taken up with the appliances.” However, Korn managed to disguise the appliances with sophistication. “The bar area houses a sink, dishwasher, two refrigerators and an ice-maker,” Korn says. “All of these appliances are hidden behind panels, so you do not realize so much is packed into this space. We maximized every inch of the space.” The result was rewarding for both Korn and the family involved. “I feel so good that we were able to fit in everything that the client desired,” Korn says. “The family tells me regularly that they use the room every day, and it is their favorite room in the house.”

B
efore Alexis Austin opened her own stationery company, St. Louis-based Curio Press, the lifestyle influencer studied architecture and dreamed of building her own home. Today, she’s putting those lessons to good use, and has invited her more than 11,000 Instagram fans to follow along on every step of the design process. Austin moved into her new build in Kirkwood in December 2020, and has since been designing and curating the home to match her vision. “Having enough room for all the food that we make from scratch was super important,” Austin says of her hunt to find the ideal home for her husband, John, and 7-yearold daughter, Emma. “We decided to build to get exactly what we wanted.” They settled on a double lot in Kirkwood and chose a layout that differed from most area homes, which often appear narrow but run deep through to the backyard. Austin worked with Kirkwood-based NJL Custom Homes for the building process: “We decided to fill the lot width-wise rather than depth-wise. [The main floor is] one room, similar to the more traditional style that you see in places like Europe, where, [historically,] they needed that light to live in spaces.” Ample light flows through a row of paneled windows, trimmed in black and covered by custom-made blinds from A Better View.
“Everything was thought out – all the little details – to make [the home] as efficient and easy to live in as possible,” Austin says. “It was important for us to have a large kitchen, with lots of storage. We wanted a place to gather.” A critical feature of the kitchen is the prep area –a separate room off of the cooking area with extra storage and a second sink. In the main kitchen, the homeowners tucked high-end appliances by SubZero and Wolf behind Amish-styled cabinetry from Kenrose Kitchen Kabinets in Illinois – all of which created a seamless aesthetic. A dining area flanks the kitchen, which faces the living room and limestone fireplace. A walled partition separates a single section of the main floor that houses a wide corridor, which serves as the mudroom, featuring built-in cabinetry and access to the bathroom. In the bathroom, Austin installed a dog bath. “Any space that would be used for an egress, like stairs or hallways, became used in some way or felt like its own independent space,” Austin says. “Most people would think of a foyer as a large entry space, but I incorporated it into the living room because I didn’t want to waste square footage.” This design philosophy is evidenced in the ultrawide staircase, showcasing a wall of windows and a contemporary lantern chandelier from Wilson Lighting. At the top of the staircase, a spacious hallway leads to the bedrooms and offers a nook for an office. Throughout each level, the same eggshell shade of paint coats all the walls, ceilings and trim for a cohesive interior. Soft, light hues can be spotted in every décor piece – a style that Austin defines as “farmhouse meets traditional meets French country.” She adds: “I want everything to be inviting and comfortable, and look like you should plop yourself down. Everything is washable and comfortable and kid-friendly, even though it’s white.” This aesthetic extends into her daughter’s bedroom, which is the largest in the house and intended for Emma to adapt the space as her needs change. But Austin’s favorite space in the home? “I planned our whole house around the master bath,” she says. “It’s the one room that always looks nice because nothing gets left out. It’s perfect the way it is.” A gorgeous tub flanked by dual vanities rests in the center of the room and is topped by a large window and a chandelier. Another window lets in additional light beside the oversize shower. The space flows into the large walk-in closet – complete with a vanity. “My husband does yoga in here in the mornings and his meditations,” Austin says of the dressing room. “It’s a nice retreat for me in my bedroom, away from work and everything else that is going on in my life.” Austin is still discovering new ways to enhance the livability of her dream home, and invites all to follow along as she continually evolves the abode via instagram.com/ alexisandraaustin.

ince 2017, K.Ferrara Color has been dedicated to offering stunning shades of nail polish perfection with a long-lasting formula that’s free from common chemicals. And now, K.Ferrara Color is expanding its offerings even further. “We have been in business just a short four years, and we’ve come a long way,” says Kathy Ferrara, founder of K.Ferrara Color. “We have 30 colors now, six colors for children, and we recently came out with an advanced hand-repair treatment that’s a really luxurious hand cream. Even if you wash your hands throughout the day a couple of times, your hands will still feel moisturized.” In addition to the hand cream, K.Ferrara Color has released a tinted lip conditioner line delightfully dubbed the “I Am” collection. “In the ‘I Am’ collection, we have Grateful, Joyful, Courageous and Powerful,” Ferrara says. “I want to support women in stepping into those things. So when we post about it [on social media], we encourage women when you are putting on this lip conditioner to say to yourself, ‘I am powerful, I am joyful.’ It’s just a little reminder throughout the day for those affirmations that I think remind us of who we are – who we truly are and where we come from.” K.Ferrara Color’s new products continue the company’s goal of creating clean beauty products.

“Everything is very healthy and free of harmful ingredients,” Ferrara says. “I think everybody right now is really starting to be educated on clean beauty products, and I think it’s really started to be important to people. And the more educated you are, the better choices you’re going to make.” That is something Ferrara learned firsthand before even beginning her business. “I had been diagnosed with colon cancer,” Ferrara says. “I started researching about chemicals – the chemicals that we put on our bodies and in our bodies and how that affects us. So when I decided to do this, I knew I needed to be different. I wanted to bring to market something that is not harmful to women.” Ferrara says she found a U.S. manufacturer that developed a 10-free formula, meaning the nail polishes are free from 10 of the most harmful chemicals commonly found in most other polish products. “I didn’t even realize just how toxic nail polish was until I started delving in and really learning about the product,” Ferrara says. “[It’s]
not only the toxins that seep into your nail bed and around your skin, but also the fumes that are so bad to breathe in. So our products take away all of that. It’s the safest choice for pregnant women. It’s the safest choice for children. So it does no harm.” The chic, contemporary, confidence-inducing colors (all named after inspirational women in Ferrara’s life) are another perk of the polishes, which are available locally at Clean Spa, Lusso, Honeycomb, Tints Polish and the K.Ferrara Color website. “A fun thing about K.Ferrara Color is that it is a very family-oriented business,” Ferrara says. “My mom and dad, who are retired, are my shipping department. I have the whole shipping department set up in their lower level. They have it set up on their phone, so when we get orders, their phones ding, and they go downstairs together. My dad does all the shipping labels, and my mom so lovingly packages up the product – and our packaging is really beautiful. You feel like you’re getting a gift every time, even if you’re just ordering something for yourself.” And speaking of presents, Ferrara recommends gifting Anna (which she describes as a true red), Ruth (a more jewel-toned red) and Sigrid (which she describes as the perfect holiday gold) this season. “All my colors lean toward a more sophisticated kind of color palette,” Ferrara says. “For Ladue News readers only, I am offering 15 percent off. Use code LADUE15 at check-out.” K.Ferrara Color, kferraracolor.com Laduenews.com | deCember 3, 2021

Afandi Sweets & Cafe By Mabel Suen

n St. Louis’ Lindenwood Park neighborhood, a third-generation pastry chef crafts Middle Eastern sweets and cuisine based on a century’s worth of family recipes. In July, Jwamer Rasheed opened Afandi Sweets & Cafe, which features baklava, the dessert kenafeh, kebabs and more. Rasheed says his grandfather, Saie, pioneered the family food tradition. In 1918, he opened a bakery in Kurdistan and introduced baklava to his customers in northern Iraq. Each of Saie’s seven sons went on to open their own businesses, including Rasheed’s father, who established his own bakery in 1962 – eventually teaching Rasheed the tools and techniques of the trade. Afandi – which translates to “master” from

Arabic – makes the Rasheeds’ skillfully prepared fare available outside Kurdistan for the first time. Rasheed moved to St. Louis, from which his wife hails, in 2003 after living in San Diego. He trained with his family for half a year in Kurdistan to cap 15 years of baking experience before bringing the concept stateside. “I’m very excited to introduce our delicious sweets, baked goods and recipes from my grandfather to the St. Louis area,” Rasheed says. “We use honey for everything – no sugar is involved, and everything is organic. We make all the baked goods and food from scratch. Everything’s fresh and made in-house.” Afandi fills the 6,900 square feet previously occupied by River’s Edge Social. The space comprises two separate rooms, one given to dining, the other to a long display case gleaming with desserts. A bar lined with hookahs – offered with more than a dozen different flavors – sits
opposite the bakery counter. Rasheed’s scratch-made phyllo takes on many forms and is stuffed with such fillings as roasted pistachios, walnuts, cashews, dried fruit and chocolate. Patrons can purchase flaky, honeysoaked baklava both by the piece and by the pound. Another signature item, kenafeh, comprises melted akkawi cheese topped with shredded phyllo, honey, roasted nuts and, if desired, ice cream. From the food menu, customers can choose from entrées like a mix grill with lamb shish kebab, the chicken dish shish tawook and kofta kebab (skewers of lamb and beef). Appetizers include the ground lamb dish kibbe with the sesame seed-based tahini, and to drink, customers can opt for Arabic coffee or tea, the yogurt drink ayran or pressed juices.

ARTS SPEAK
HAILING BERRY By Bryan A. Hollerbach | Images courtesy of Blueberry Hill, Dualtone Records
“Deep down in Louisiana close to New Orleans – ”
T
hose eight words, the first line of a song turned anthem, conquered the world in 1958, and they and the rest of “Johnny B. Goode” grace a new musical valedictory from the late, great Chuck Berry streeting in two weeks: Live From Blueberry Hill. Nashville’s Dualtone Records will issue the 10-track release on Dec. 17, and “Johnny B. Goode” closes it – likely not by accident. Most, if not all, rock ’n’ roll aficionados, after all, can’t hear the first half of its initial couplet without adding the second half (“Way back up in the woods among the evergreens”), then the remainder of that sonic romp. In fact, in Greil Marcus’ seminal Lipstick Traces, his 1989 “Secret History of the Twentieth Century,” that cultural polymath christens the intro to “Johnny B. Goode” “the most deliciously explosive opening in rock ’n’ roll.”
Berry strutted his last duckwalk less than five years ago, dying at his Wentzville-area home on March 18, 2017 – with The New York Times, in its obituary of him two days later, characterizing the St. Louis native as rock’s “master theorist and conceptual genius.” An October press release devoted to Live From Blueberry Hill notes that its tracks come from gigs between July 2005 and January 2006 at Joe Edwards’ landmark restaurant, lounge and concert venue in the University City sector of the Delmar Loop. The same press release also notes that Berry performed 209 times in 17 years in the Duck Room at Blueberry Hill. Beyond “Johnny B. Goode,” tracks on the forthcoming Dualtone release include such classics as “Roll Over Beethoven,” “Rock and Roll Music,” “Sweet Little Sixteen” and, of course, “Nadine.” In his 1998 Grown Up All Wrong, influential (if often controversial) music critic Robert Christgau dubs Berry “the greatest rock lyricist
this side of Bob Dylan” – before adding “and sometimes I prefer him to Dylan.” Somewhat later in that glorious musical omnium-gatherum, Christgau continues about Berry: “So is he, was he, will he be a great artist? It won’t be us judging, but perhaps we can think of it this way. Maybe the true measure of his greatness was not whether his songs ‘lasted’ – a term that as of now means persisted through centuries instead of decades – but that he was one of the ones to make us understand that the greatest thing about art is the way it happens among people.” In that regard, collectively, Berry fans may find themselves wistfully harking back to the maestro’s 1957 “School Day,” a song (alas) excluded from Live From Blueberry Hill: “Hail, hail rock ’n’ roll.”

here’s a hidden corner of The RitzCarlton, St. Louis in Clayton that transports visitors back in time. For those in the know, all it takes is a handful of steps through a set of alternating arches, and poof – you’ve left the 2020s behind, entering instead into a posh space set 100 years in the past. This is The Cigar Club, a private bar and lounge designed for guests who smoke cigars and prefer to pair them with a glass of finely appointed scotch or expertly crafted fare. It’s the product of a nearly two-year renovation headed by The Johnson Studio at Cooper Carry, a design firm based in Atlanta. It was well worth the wait. In September, the studio won the 2021 Hospitality Design Award for Bar Club + Lounge Design, making The Cigar Club the most recent success story in a long line of projects between the hotel and the firm. “We’ve done a lot of work with Ritz-Carlton through the years and have made lasting friendships,” says Anita Summers, principal at The Johnson Studio at Cooper Carry. “It was through those friendships that we were contacted by the current ownership, for this project. This was a major renovation, so there was a lot of conversation and pre-planning done to be sure we were providing for all needs of both guests and staff.” The team started work on the project in early 2019, The Cigar Club officially opened in October 2020, and the Casa Don Alfonso restaurant followed this past March. Yet the first thing guests notice when they approach the space isn’t the enticing aromas from the kitchen or even the rich waft of cigar smoke – it’s how supremely different it feels from the rest of the hotel. It’s tucked away, private, almost as if you – and only you – are “in the know.” Reservations are required, and visitors must be at least 21 years old. On entry, it’s abundantly clear that Jay Gatsby himself would feel right at home.

“The idea was that the dark and moody space itself evoked a sense that you were in a secret Prohibition hideaway,” Summers explains. “We designed the entrance to the club to be a journey through alternating arches to feel like you are going to a special hidden spot within the hotel. The timeless materials used would have been seen in a posh, secret speakeasy in the 1920s.” Once inside the sleek, plush space, guests are invited to enjoy whiskey and other spirits, must-try bites and good company along with a cigar of their choice. Smoking is allowed in The Cigar Club, despite the rest of the hotel being smoke-free – yet another detail that makes the lounge feel like a place into which you’ve stepped back in time. “There’s a romance about the Roaring ’20s that people relate to and dream about,” Summers says. “It was a time where drinks were forbidden, so hidden from view, glamorous cocktails were invented, and life was a party behind closed doors. The design trends of the time lend themselves
to warm metals, burled woods and extravagant design. Using these materials, we were able to give an authenticity to the speakeasy feel.” Each carefully considered detail adds up to an almost obvious win for the design studio at the 2021 Hospitality Design Awards. A victory with this high of a profile on the international stage only magnifies the metro area’s image – a welcome accomplishment for the team at The Johnson Studio. “Everyone knows the Ritz-Carlton and its high bar of luxury and service, but the new design gives St. Louis a reason to rediscover the hotel’s dining and nightlife, and experience something new,” Summers says. “The Cigar Club, along with the new Casa Don Alfonso restaurant, isn’t your parents’ Ritz-Carlton. The new design is very current, very design-forward, and is bringing a new clientele to the historic hotel.” The Ritz-Carlton Cigar Club, 100 Carondelet Plaza, St. Louis, 314-863-6300, ritzcarlton.com/en/hotels/st-louis

READY READERS
Celebrating Hanukkah By Sheila Oliveri
T
his holiday season, Ready Readers wholeheartedly recommends a heartwarming Hanukkah story, Latke, the Lucky Dog by St. Louis-born writer Ellen Fischer and illustrator Tiphanie Beeke. In the book, the title character recounts his adoption, beginning when the family first meets their furry friend. The dad notices the playfully dancing midsize canine, “golden brown, like a fried latke,” vying for their attention. The family chooses the happy, scruffy pup as their own, naming him after the Hanukkah treat. Welcomed home on the first day of Hanukkah, Latke, on entering the kitchen, is greeted by a wonderful aroma: freshly fried jelly doughnuts for the family’s celebration that night. Latke hungrily hops to the table and eats all the treats. This angers Zoe, the younger daughter, but her older brother Zach rescues the pup. On the second holiday night, Latke rips the wrapping paper from all the presents, thereby triggering Zach’s ire, but this time, Zoe comforts the distraught canine. The third night of
Hanukkah involves Mom’s turn at frustration, as Latke gobbles a plate of fried potato pancakes. “You heard your name, didn’t you boy?” Zach reasons. The troubles continue throughout the Festival of Lights, with Latke chewing dreidels, spilling applesauce and licking the chocolate gelt, causing Dad to muse: “Maybe we picked the wrong dog.” When Latke chews through the menorah candles, the parents rue their adoption decision. Just as the children smoothed over the fuss of Latke’s previous foibles, though, they stand up for their new friend again and again – and on the eighth night of Hanukkah, Latke knows he’s home to stay when he receives a gift meant just for him. Fischer’s story of pet adoption should ring true with readers as the family slowly learns to love their new friend despite his missteps, and Beeke’s illustrations – charming watercolor tableaus – nicely bring the characters to life. Latke, the Lucky Dog could be considered a
ln
cautionary tale for those adding a pet to their crew during the holidays, but it also portrays a lesson in forgiving faults and family unity.
