Perfumes... “A woman without perfume is a woman without future,” quoting Coco Chanel. I must say perfumes are anything but important to me! Don’t get me wrong, I love just one kind of perfume that I haven’t changed for over 10 years now and just one kind of splash that I have been using for eternity… Just one perfume is important to me. Just one scent that makes a difference to my nose! I’m recognized with this scent, no matter how many years pass, everyone knows me for it and they remember me with it. That is how significant your personality should be; no matter how far or apart you are, make people remember you with your special traits… Using one kind of perfume made me loyal to it no matter how expensive it gets, how hard I search for it, but I always keep faithful to it and I feel lost without it! It’s the same way I see the friends and family; no matter how life drifts us apart, we come back in search of each other… Perfumes are flattering; they give you this refreshing feeling of energy renewal, a mood lift and sense of beauty and satisfaction. Be the perfume to the ones around you. Be the source of their positivity and happiness… Perfumes are nostalgic, they bring back memories of your childhood, of your lost love, of your kids, of your grannies, of your old home, of your summer getaway, perfumes always hold a special memory… Create memories everywhere you go, every place you visit and revisit them whenever you feel nostalgic with the scent of your perfume… Perfumes are the most famous gift around the world! Not only because it’s a fashionable gift suitable for almost every age, but because it’s available in various scents to suit various tastes. You should use your words as perfumes; sometimes you need to pick the strong words, the soft ones, the light and the noteworthy according to the situation. Pick smartly and wisely. Perfumes might vary and taste definitely changes, but my scents will always, always remain the same…

1. How can I have a younger looking neck? A healthy lifestyle can help keep your neck looking youthful as you age. Moisturize to keep your skin smooth and supple, exercise to help firm up the neck area, as well as other areas of the body, stay hydrated to keep your skin looking firm and young, eat well balanced meals that are high in fiber, fruits and vegetables, and find a great neck firming cream with quality ingredients. Use: Olay Night Firming Cream for Face and Neck, Clarins Advanced Extra-Firming Neck Cream, Lancôme Rénergie Microlift Neck R.A.R.E. Superior Lifting Neck Cream, or L’Oréal Advanced Revitalift Face and Neck Day Cream. You can also try this exercise: Curl your tongue up and back, pressing it against the roof of your mouth. Hold for a few seconds and repeat. Do this exercise a few times a day, in the car or while you’re at the computer. The contractions will help keep your jaw muscles firm and prevent more sagging.

2

2. What’s your advice for transitioning skin from winter to spring? Skin tends to become oilier when temperatures rise, so switching to an exfoliating cleanser or adding a glycolic acid-based toner will help keep skin healthy and clear. Use: Olay Pro-X Exfoliating Renewal Cleanser, Chanel Mousse Exfoliante Purete Rinse-Off Exfoliating Cleansing Foam, or Clarins One-Step Gentle Exfoliating Facial Cleanser. As we head into summer, swap out heavy foundation for a lightweight tinted moisturizer to give skin a subtle glow, while protecting it from UV damage. Use: Victoria’s Secret Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15, Estée Lauder ‘Daywear Plus’ Multi Protection Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15, or Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 - Oil Free. To control excess shine throughout the day, opt for blotting papers and cleansing wipes. Use: Bobbi Brown Blotting Papers, Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets, Neutrogena Deep Clean Oil-Free Makeup Remover Cleansing Wipes, or Bourjois Express Cleansing Wipes.

Beauty

“Arc De Triomphe” Eyebrow Beauty

I

’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Bold eyebrows are a woman’s number one accessory. At New York Fashion Week it was still all about a defined, tough, bushy brow for spring. These days, skinny brows seem so last decade. How to get the look? Here is everything you need! Monika Chiang

Time To Put The Tweezers Down! Your brows need to be styled like hair does, cut and brushed and parted the right way.

Brush Upward After drawing your desired eyebrow shape, use a spoolie brush to coax hairs up for lift and volume.

The Shape Of Things Full eyebrows are beautiful and exotic-looking. For those not blessed with thickness; having the right shape is most important: You can use makeup to add depth and fill in gaps. Here’s how to use tweezers and pencil to your advantage.

Tweeze Stray Hairs Once you’ve finished filling in and brushing, remove unwanted follicles with slant-tipped tweezers. Unless you’re a professional, only tweeze underneath (not above) the brow: If you accidentally tweeze into the arch, it brings the brow down instead of lifting it up. I also recommend stepping back from the mirror periodically to check your work (When you zero in on the brow too much, you lose perspective on what shape it should actually be). Thinking about threading or waxing? These methods pull and tug on the delicate eyelid area. And they don’t offer the level of precision that tweezing does.

Get A Good Start Visualize your brow shape before you start. The front of the brow should align with the upper bridge of your nose.

Reem Acra 44 |

| April 2013

Marc Jacobs

Tracy Reese

Give Yourself Guidelines Fill in your brows before you pluck. This way, you won’t overdo it. Use a slanted pencil for the front of the brow, the widest part, turn it sideways at the arch for a thinner line at the end. The arch should be three-quarters of the way back from the nose bridge. From there, the tail should taper off and follow the angle of the eye.

A. The starting point of the eyebrow. B. Widest part of the brow. Also is where you remove hair that lies in front of line A. C. The arch, high point of brow. D. Begins to narrow for shape. e. End of brow

brow. Go For A Mirrored Effect Repeat the same techniques on brow number two and keep in mind that for a symmetrical look, you want the tops of the arches to be at the same point. Don’t Forget To Powder Once you’re finished, dust a bit of translucent powder over arches to set the brow pencil. This will help soak up the natural oils on your skin and keep your eyebrows looking freshly groomed.

Close The Gap Use your pencil and add pigment in the area between the front-end and inner arch. I like powdery pencils because it’s mostly powder, with a minimal amount of wax. Overly waxy brow pencils go on dark and heavy, and can stick and clump. Try using: MAC’s “Veluxe brow liner” or “Eye Brows” pencil. SUQQU also has a beautiful brow liner: “The Eyebrow Liquid Pen” (which is water and oil-resistant to last throughout the day) and the waterproof “Eyebrow Pencil” (which is separable Cartridge and Holder). Trim Excess Hairs You don’t want to trim your brows unless you absolutely have to. Feathery eyebrows are full and beautiful, the more you trim, the harsher your hairs will grow in. That said, note that sometimes a little trimming is okay. How to tell if you need it? Use a spoolie brush, comb hairs upward at an angle, in the direction of the brow. If any hairs are noticeably longer than others or hang over the edge, snip sparingly. Retrace Your Steps After you’ve plucked and trimmed, the penciled-in makeup will likely have faded. Go back and fill in where you need to, then begin work on your other

Faces of Egypt handle close encounters with one of the most curious and unpredicted species as the Longimanus Shark. Then the turning point was learning “shark feeding and tonic immobility” technique in 2011 in the Bahamas with my mentor Cristina Zenato; an expert shark handler and one of the top shark feeders in the world. She has developed her practice of tonic immobility to remove hooks from sharks’ mouths and to remove parasites, and she’s dedicated to raising awareness against shark finning and capture. After that I started researching shark behavior to know more about the different species of sharks; from the species we have in the Red Sea, all the way to Miami and the Bahamas, and I have observed the behaviors of Longimanus, Tigers, Lemons, Reefs, and Bulls. What were the pre-dive preparations for your shark-feeding dive? And how did you feel after you did it?

Ahmed Mamdouh

The First Certified Shark Feeder/Immobility in Egypt & the Middle East By: Farah Asfour

A

hmed Mamdouh is a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer (MSDT) and founder of Deco Divers Club in Cairo and Mermaid Safari Fleet in Hurghada.. We met him and had the opportunity of listening to his experience with the sharks.

How was your start in diving? I started diving more than ten years ago, after the first dive I knew I am already addicted. I always like to try new things and that was what happened with diving too. I tried it and after the first dive, I became passionate for it. That passion got bigger by time and I’ve started to dive regularly since then. Then how was this passion directed towards sharks? Watching sharks underwater closely has always been my passion, I was always looking for locations to get a better closer glimpse at those lovely creatures. Then in 2008, I participated in “SharkSchool” course given by Dr. Erich Ritter in Marsa Alam; he’s a shark expert and marine biologist. I learned shark-human interaction, reading the swimming behavior of sharks and how to 46 |

| April 2013

I took a one-to-one course with Cristina where I learned about the biology of sharks and the feeding technique, and I had to wear a chainmail suit for the dive; it’s a special suit against shark bites. I was extremely excited and I enjoyed the experience very much, it was a dream come true. Can you explain to us how you make a shark calm and motionless? Sharks have sensory organs called “Ampullae of Lorenzini,” when those organs or pores are touched, sharks become very calm and in a state of immobility during which you can get closer to them, take samples, do research, or even just enjoy holding and touching them. It’s an amazing feeling. But this has to be done with a very special technique; not anyone can do it or teach it. People always have the idea that if a shark sees us, it will eat us; so how can you swim with a creature that might attack you? It’s a fact that humans are not shark prey. While bil-

lions of people swim in the water, there are only 100150 shark attacks every year; so we can’t say that we are their food. Moreover, sharks can see us, hear us, feel us, smell us, sense the vibrations we produce in the water and detect our heart beats from far away; however, they do nothing to us; again another proof that we are not their prey. I mean sharks are there in the water, they are strong, they are very fast and they feel our presence, so if they want to attack us, what’s stopping them! But still, sharks do bite people. When sharks bite people, most of the time it’s because of “mistaken identity,” where the shark mistakes humans for their normal prey such as fish. Also many incidents occur when sharks taste-bite the unfamiliar object in front of them, which can be a human being. The taste-bite is mild; it’s like human’s bite. But this doesn’t mean that sharks are safe; in fact they are wild, they are the best predators on Earth, and snorkeling or swimming near them is dangerous. The ocean is theirs, and when we go there, we have to respect their place.

The Bright Face in The World of Photography By: Caroline Coussa give us a brief about yourself and tell us how you became a photographer. I am a product designer working at Icecairo. I have recently graduated from the Faculty of Applied Arts at the German University in Cairo where I studied product design. The first camera I ever owned was when I was in fourth grade. It was so exciting, I took it everywhere with me and I specifically remember taking it on a school trip to the Pyramids and I started taking pictures of people rather than the Pyramids itself. I got into the field of fashion photography when I was interning at DEANA SHAABAN. I was still at the beginning of teaching myself the basics of photography. Deana gave me the opportunity to experiment and try out different ideas and she helped give me the push I needed to be able to have confidence in my work and made me realize my infinite potential. So far I have shot about 7 different photo shoots with her. Why did you choose photography? It’s what I like and enjoy doing, whether it’s documenting 48 |

You don’t make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved.

everyday activities, street photography, landscape, architecture, etc. I don’t like the idea of belonging to a genre that is defined by certain aspects, but if we are speaking about fashion photography, then it’s what combines the message or purpose and art. in your opinion, What’s unique about the art of photography? I love photography, seeing the world through a camera lens, to me, is one of the most incredible and exciting things in the world. Photography helps you catch glimpses of the world, that sometimes, might go unnoticed. The power of a photograph is absolutely incredible and it has the capability to move mountains and to tell incredible stories. I hope in my lifetime to be able to tell as many profound stories with my photography as I am able to. What do you like most about photography?

Capturing everyday life, people, and places. If I had a superpower, I would freeze time just to snap some of the pictures I always visualize as I pass by. I am madly in love with film cameras, homographic cameras, Polaroid, digital, and every other type that exists. Taking pictures is like creating your own dream, your own world. what obstacles did you face in your work? Finding the right photography course for me, an inspiring tutor that can do more than just transfer written knowledge, someone who can put me on the right track and inspire me. However, when I was unable to find someone who could teach me the way I needed to be taught, I eventually decided to teach myself, which I believe was a challenge more than being an obstacle. Another obstacle is that photography equipment is quite expensive and sometimes my ability to take pictures is put on hold until finding the right equipment.

Want “sun kissed skin” all year long? Here are the facts about tanning and sun beds: Sun tanning or simply tanning is the process whereby skin color is darkened. The process is most often a result of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or from artificial sources, such as a tanning bed. Sunlight has a positive influence on our mood, gives us a boost of energy and a healthy appearance. It’s an important factor that influences our happiness and self-confidence. Moreover, the sun generates vitamin D, which protects us against bone and muscle problems. There are even strong indications that sunlight and vitamin D are protective against various forms of cancer. Scientists dismissed the myth that solariums/tanning beds are bad for your skin.To tan in a sun bed is the same as tanning in the natural sun. However, you should remember to always tan according to your individual skin type and at all times look out for the warning signals (allergic reactions or burns). Rule of thumb is to avoid over-tanning in both the sun and sun beds. At Kriss, we follow a very strict procedure before a client uses our Alisun tanning bed. By an extensive questionnaire we determine your skin type, give you a tanning plan which consists of 8 sessions that can be covered in 10 days. We always inform our clients that over-tanning is never good for their skin. We believe in sensible tanning, that’s why we specifically chose the Alisun sun bed. Alisun was one of the first companies to initiate the “Sensible Tanning Association.” The main purpose of this foundation is to achieve explicit regulations for healthy and responsible tanning. Before tanning, make sure you use a pre-tanner to help you get the result you want. After tanning sessions you must use a moisturizer to revitalize your skin. Like spending time on the beach, your skin dehydrates so you need to balance that out by using a moisturizer. Experience having sun kissed skin all year long, while maintaining healthy skin for good. We all love keeping souvenirs. We collect birthday cards, children teeth, we keep old jeans although there is no way we’ll fit into them anymore. This brings comfort and a sense of safety. However, keeping to old ways can prevent us from experiencing new things and this is a shame. The best way to get the best of both worlds is to sort out what you need from what you could do without. Spring cleaning of your life, in a way! A great way to start is with your body, through detox. Although it is generally safe, and in general even healthy, you should ask your physician if it is appropriate to your state. For instance, pregnant women, children and people with chronic diseases should avoid such practices. You’ll know you need to go on a detox program when 68 |

| April 2013

you feel you have stocked too much. Storing holiday pictures is fun, fat and kilograms a little less fun… Among the symptoms that could signal toxin accumulation are unexplained fatigue, sluggish elimination, irritated skin, allergies or low-grade infections, bags under the eyes, a distended stomach even if the rest of your body is thin, menstrual difficulties, or mental confusion. As to the how, here are few guidelines you should keep in mind in preparing for your detox program: 1. Reduce your toxin intake: eliminate alcohol, coffee, cigarettes and refined sugars. 2. Avoid toxins in your environment: replace chemical-based cleaning products and personal care products such as cosmetics by natural substitutes such as black soap, organic shampoos, vinegar, etc.

Springtime Detox Tips! 3. Distance yourself from sources of stress: avoid conflicts, do not procrastinate (being comfortable with deadlines and avoiding rushes will make time management more pleasant), put things into perspective, etc. Thing is that stress makes the body release stress hormones into your system. While these hormones can provide the “adrenaline rush to win a race or meet a deadline, in large amounts they create toxins and slow down detoxification enzymes in the liver. 4. Eat right: plenty of fiber, including brown rice and organically-grown fresh fruits and vegetables. Beets, radishes, artichokes, cabbage, broccoli, spirulina, chlorella, and seaweed are excellent detoxifying foods. 5. Cleanse your digestive system: cleanse and protect the liver by taking herbs such as dandelion root, burdock and milk thistle, and drinking green tea.

6. Complement your diet: take vitamin C, which helps the body produce glutathione, a liver compound that drives away toxins. 7. Stay hydrated: especially in fasting phases, drink plenty of water to compensate for the water contained into food. 8. Get air: breathe deeply and make blood bring the oxygen to all your muscles and organs. 9. Work on converting negative emotions into positive ones. No need to be on a detox for that. 10. Stimulate blood circulation: massages, hydrotherapy, exercise. 11. Sweat: toxins are eliminated through skin as well. However, be sure to wash away all the dead cells once done! 12. Be patient: most programs extend over 7 days and this can be explained by the time the body needs, which can be quite long. The digestive system needs to rest and the liver needs to clean the blood.

This is especially beneficial for people who suffer from edema (an accumulation of fluids in the body’s tissues) and those who have high blood pressure or other heart-related diseases. • Asparagus is packed with antioxidants, ranking among the top fruits and vegetables for its ability to neutralize celldamaging free radicals. 5 Word Answer What are the best foods for silky smooth skin?

Raw foods, omega-3 oils, shellfish, pumpkin seeds and zinc

Fix with Food

Do you suffer from spring allergies? Nuts are one good choice. They’re a healthy snack and are high in magnesium and vitamin E. Magnesium protects against the wheezing that accompanies asthma, and vitamin E boosts immunity. An apple a day helps keep your allergies away. In the Crete diet study, researchers found that people whose diets incorporated apples as a staple had greater protection against both allergies and asthma. Omega-3 fatty acids in seafood have natural anti-inflammatory effects that boost the immune system and most allergies happen when your immune system is out of whack.

Discover Torii The Gateway to Sushi and Teppanyaki At The Cairo Marriott Hotel & Omar Khayyam Casino BY: FARAH ASFOUR Being a big sushi and Teppanyaki lovers, we were lucky to be invited to try out the newly introduced Teppanyaki at Torii, and I must say it was beyond luscious! Upon our arrival, we were seated at the Teppanyaki table and we were excited for the Teppanyaki show to start! The Teppanyaki table seats 8 persons and the show lasts for about 90 minutes. As for the menu, it is rich with four Teppanyaki set menus. Each of them includes the flavorsome Torii salad, miso soup, stir-fried or steamed rice, stir-fried vegetables, a main set of your choice that will confuse your taste buds to choose from (Menu #1: prawns, salmon & sea-bass, Menu #2: prime fillet, chicken & prawns, Menu #3: fillet of beef, chicken & seabass, Menu #4: prawns & salmon), and fresh fruit with ice cream. After deep thought we selected the 2nd menu, and after preparing the fresh ingredients needed for our meal, master of Teppanyaki Chef Hussein came, welcomed us and voilà, it was finally show time! While enjoying the live professional Teppanyaki show performed in front of us, we were served the famous Japanese miso soup; with soy bean and tofu, spring onions and wakame. Then we had our scrumptious appetizer; grilled prawns! What else can make a Teppanyaki meal more tasty! The grilled fillet, chicken, and prawns were ready by then, they were cooked in front of us, with only oil, salt and pepper, so you’re guaranteed you’re having a fresh healthy meal like nowhere else. For a touch of flavor, we were given two types of sauces; ginger sauce for seafood and vegetables, and honey mustard sauce for chicken and beef, it was just the perfect addition to the dish! With our main course, we chose stir-fried rice; it was absolutely amazing, especially when eaten with the stir-fried vegetables consisting of mushrooms, onions, Chinese cabbage and red and green peppers. Yum! This is not all what Torii offers! There’s a sushi counter where you can sit and watch sushi and sashimi being handcrafted on the spot. If you’re neither a sushi nor a Teppanyaki person, you have the option of traditional Japanese dishes like Tori Karaage, fried chicken in Japanese style with sweet Soya sauce; Ebi Tempura, crispy deep-fried prawns; to Yaki Udon, stir-fried wheat noodle with seafood and vegetables; and much more… Torii boasts a diversified beverage menu including the signature Japanese drinks: Sake, alcoholic drink made from rice and it’s served warm or hot; and Asahi beer of dry, clean and crisp taste. They are both imported from Japan. Don’t miss all-you-can-eat for the sushi on Monday and Friday. Torii is open for dinner every day from 6pm till midnight. Reservations are required.

ecently one of the girls I am acquainted with at the gym was returning back to her home country and we were having a farewell lunch with her followed by a delicious dessert. While we talked I noticed a young woman at the table who refused to take even a small piece of the cake. She acted as if she was terrified of having the dessert. She said, “it is better to deny myself even a small piece, otherwise the rest of my day would be spoiled. I will lose control and feel that since I have already broken my diet then I will just eat more and more. I am sure we all have had a similar situation. 72 |

When we decide to go for a weight loss program, the first thing we do is stop eating sweets. Nowadays we are under constant pressure from the media that food high in sugar is not good for us and will cause health related problems. Yes, it is correct, but what they are talking about are huge portions, big slices of cake, lots of candies and chocolate. We have all heard “everything is good in moderation.” Following a strict diet all the time is stressful for you. You always have to monitor what to eat, how much and without wavering from that diet. Some people deprive themselves of food in order to lose weight and get in shape. Eating too little food results in loss of vital nutrients and calories. Food deprivation can also lead to loss of energy and cause mental changes. A very strict diet may also lead to depression, anger, sadness and eating disorders. Eating too little food can lead to detrimental effects on body growth and development. So, if you decide to change something in your diet make sure you do it in a right way and with professional help. Going back to the lady from the lunch who wanted to have a piece of the cake, but kept telling herself, “no, no, no.” The word “No” means something negative, something forbidden. It leads to negative thoughts about something that should be pleasurable in our lives. It also leads to intense cravings for the things we are denying ourselves. All strict diets (those eliminating sweets especially) eventually end, and when they do people tend to put back on even more weight than when they started their strict diet, which further adds more agony, guilt and pain.

Any good dietician will tell you how important it is just to loosen up a bit every so often and then go back to your normal routine. Our brain is very smart, but needs conditioning. If we keep telling ourselves no, we are creating a negative circle. What we need is to create a positive lovable habit, one that will help and support us in following and maintaining a healthy way of life. So, convince yourself that it is ok to have that small piece of chocolate cake without feeling guilty (so long as it is in moderation). Eliminate the feelings of guilt because you are trying to create a sustainable diet plan, one you can maintain for your lifetime. Remember it is a choice, if you aren’t craving the cake, then feel good to choose not to eat it. Losing weight is not something that can happen overnight. It is a long term lifestyle change and should be done for right reasons. Tell yourself, “I want to lose weight because it will help me maintain good health, will keep my blood pressure and cholesterol in a normal range and will give me more energy.” These are the right reasons we should be on a diet and what we need to keep in our minds. It will help us to keep the motivation. Always remember to try to stay in a positive state of mind about your diet and love yourself the way you are and the path you are on. Also, remember there is a fine line between being careful about what you eat and being obsessed about it. Keep the right attitude towards your food and you can create healthy habits that are good for you and ones that will last a lifetime.

If you eat healthy but regularly, you will achieve whatever you want to! April 2013 |

10 Valuable Diet Habits For Bikini Model Results!

W BY: Dr. Sameh Mohsen

hile there is no magic formula that will guarantee success in achieving your fitness goals, there are certainly a few key eating habits you can incorporate. The following tips can help. When done habitually, passionately and with patience and dedication, your body will react and respond to your new habits faster than you can say string bikini!

Registered Dietitian and Nutrition Therapist

1. Listen To Your Body Remember, it is your choice how you care for your body - nobody else’s. You can either give it the best fuel available and fine-tune it like a Ferrari or let it rot like an 80s junk car waiting to be made into scrap metal. Get to know your body and focus on what it feels like when you are at your very best and just aim to feel that way every day of your life. 2. Know Your Daily Caloric Intake While you don’t need to be neurotic about every bite you take throughout the day, it’s always in your favor 74 |

| April 2013

to have a ballpark figure of what you need to consume to maintain and/or lose weight. 3. Eat More And More Often Don’t starve yourself ! Your body will go out of whack and go into survival mode by going after your muscle tone (not the fat) and will only leave you feeling weak and “skinny fat.” Eating more often maintains a normal level of blood glucose which promotes steady energy levels throughout the day. Steady energy comes from a steady intake of foods. By eating 3 meals and

2 snacks per day you will boost your metabolism and your body will burn stored fat (provided that you are exercising on a regular basis). Remember, when calories are consumed, there is a thermic effect that takes place, and your metabolism rises in order to process those calories. It is simple; the more often you eat, the more ‘thermic’ effect the body is getting, thus a higher metabolism overall. 4. Be On “Portion Patrol” Who wants to weigh foods to practice portion control? In order to keep portions in check, you can use everyday household items as a mental reference guide. Here are some examples of standard serving sizes: • Cereal = a baseball • Salad Dressing = a shot glass • Nuts = a cupped palm • Cheese = a ping-pong ball • Lean Sirloin Hamburger = a mayo jar lid • Peanut Butter = one die • Beef = a bar of soap • Rice = an ice cream scoop • Potato/Sweet Potato= a computer mouse • Butter = a Scrabble tile • Fruit = a tennis ball • Cooked Pasta = a golf ball • Fish = a checkbook • Chicken = a deck of playing cards 5. Moderation Do not get extreme! Life is short - allow yourself a cheat meal or two. Let’s face it; no one can be perfect all of the time! Even bikini models like to splurge on pizza and ice cream! The key is moderation! Plan one or two meals each week where you reward yourself by indulging in your favorite “cheat” food. Whether it’s pasta, ice cream, or margaritas that you love, if you are “good” the majority of the week you can enjoy one or two of your favorites without the guilt! 6. Nutrition 101 When’s the last time you took some time to truly examine your eating habits and nutritional knowledge? One of the most important things that any future bikini model can do for her health is take some time to understand the importance of nutrition. Sometimes people get so caught up with the exercise aspect of a bikini model regimen that they forget how to supplement properly! Once you learn the power of protein, the best foods to eat and equally as important, what foods you must avoid you will have a much clearer picture of how you can use the power of nutrition to pave your way to flat abs, defined arms and a striking physique that you will be able to maintain for life! For example you should know the difference between

“good” carbohydrates and “bad” carbohydrates. It’s actually pretty simple - stick with fruits, vegetables, sweet potatoes, brown rice, and whole grains. Another easy rule to follow: if it is white (white sugar, white bread, white rice, white potatoes) it just ain’t right! 7. Discover Discipline Many women want a body that looks like it belongs on the cover of a fitness magazine but without discipline it remains a far-fetched dream. Just like any success principal, you must start small to build up your tolerance levels. By making the conscious decision to become more disciplined, you are taking a huge step towards your goal by “Doing” rather than “Dreaming.” It is like a muscle that you must exercise daily and before you know it, you are doing it! Whether you have a weakness for sweets (like me) or just dread the thought of working out, the first step is discovering what is inhibiting you from your success and making daily mental notes and positive changes in your behavior. 8. What Not To Eat You’ve heard it before but I will say it again - if you want to change the way you look and feel, stay away from fatty or overly processed foods. Remember: “If it ain’t on the Food Pyramid then it ain’t food.” Those with a nutrient poor diet or who consume a lot of alcohol or caffeine have more toxin accumulation than those who don’t thus causing their body to hoard onto fat and appear bloated. A diet rich in fresh vegetables and very little red meat could help your reduce your symptoms. 9. Drink Water Like It’s Going Out Of Style Lots of women have a hard time losing weight due to inadequate hydration. Doctors recommend that you take in seven to eight glasses every day, to help flush out toxins and other wastes, so if you are not a “water drinker” and have cellulite dimples you want to get rid of, buy yourself a refillable bottle of water to keep by your desk at work and drink up! 10. Food Journaling Develop a good “food strategy” and keep your cupboards full of the right stuff so you can avoid temptation! If you have struggled with your diet in the past, try food journaling. This simple task can be incorporated into your daily routine and it will help you understand your relationship with food. Use this tool to help you break any bad eating habits you may have developed over the years and also equally as important, to recognize your efforts for a diet gone “right” as you progress on your journey!

Love & Relationships

Would You Be Cheated On Physically Or Emotionally?! By: Caroline Coussa

W

hen you’re in a relationship, ideally you trust your companion fully. So if that trust becomes challenged by an instance (or series of instances) of infidelity, the pain sears much more intensely. The traditional idea of cheating is when one half of a couple engages in physically intimate moments with someone outside of the relationship. But what about when someone engages with someone else in non-physical intimate moments? What if nothing physical ever happens but everything emotionally is there? Some will argue that to have physical intimacy with another person, that means there is an inherent emotional closeness, too. An act of physical intimacy, especially in the taboo, infidelity sense can be an emotionless, animalistic one. It’s to fill an unintelligible urge in which choosiness of a partner is minimal. There probably isn’t much thought to it and it probably happens only once.

However, what about emotional intimacy? It requires a mental connection. Something deeper and less tangible needs to match up. Not just anyone would do. A number of moments need to happen first, leading up to a certain level of seriousness. The words, feelings and secrets shared can’t be flung about willy-nilly. Something sacred is happening. Although nothing physical may happen (no kissing, hands-holding, anything), it’s outside of the relationship one of the half previously committed to. The selective nature of finding a person on the side for this, and the soul-revealing accompanying the bond might make it a more vile form of cheating. 80 |

| April 2013

Not only is emotional cheating as much of cheating as physical indiscretions are, emotional cheating is the much more common form of cheating. This is supported by surveys that show that over half of men and women have formed an emotionally close yet physically platonic relationship with someone other than mate. Emotional affairs seem to be the way out for those who are no longer satisfied with their formal relationship but will not or cannot be physically intimate with another. By creating closeness with someone else the cheater renews the spark of romance and feelings they once had, without the disruption of ending their current relationship or worrying about being caught cheating.

It may be much harder to definitively pin down what makes up emotional cheating, but many are aware of its existence. However, as with physical cheating, partners find ways to excuse emotional infidelity. Many turn a blind eye to emotional cheating with the thought that, “Well, s/he’s still going home with me.” Songs have been written describing this situation, the singer unabashedly proclaiming to the other woman or man that their partner will be with them in the end. All is well, as long as their partner remains with them, physically. But that emotional cheating is as bad or even worse than physical cheating. Neither are preferable, but emotional cheating violates a relationship at the deepest level. By having an emotional affair, a cheater takes away from the intimacy of their relationship and is less emotionally available, if at all. What their partner is left with is the shell of a relationship, little of substance remains. One may say the relationship no longer exists once the cheater checks out emotionally. Relationships may be dealt with in the physical realm, but they are created in the emotional realm.

He Said: For men, physical cheating is more pain-

ful than emotional cheating because we, as a gender, relate to everything in a physical way first. This is our nature. We are possessive and protective of our partners in a way that is reminiscent of cavemen protecting cavewomen with spears and clubs. If we are out, though, we are always watching other men and aware of who is paying attention to you. When we leave you alone at an event, we scan the room to take an inventory of the men who noticed you, speak to you, and come close to you. Does it seem a little silly? Possibly. In our defense, though, we can’t help it; it’s instinctual. The reality is that while we don’t care with whom you talk, eat, or text, we do care deeply about who looks at you, smells your hair, holds your hand, and takes you to bed. For men, the act of learning about our partner’s infidelity is, simply put, emasculating and the rejection that comes with this realization is painful. This pain, in turn, is only magnified by how much we care for our partners. In the end, the reason that physical cheating is so painful is that we can envision it. We can play back the rendezvous in our mind over and over and relive our partner seeking comfort or escape in the arms of another. When you compare this to emotional cheating, it is clear why physical cheating is more painful to deal with, and why physical cheating leads to the end of so many relationships.

A recent study from Penn State has uncovered that more guys than you’d expect find emotional betrayal a bigger deal than sexual infidelity. Yes, you read that right. We are talking about MEN here. I know. It’s hard to believe. But that’s the truth! Popular belief until now was that women suffered the crushing blows of an emotional affair much more than men, who considered you getting it on with someone else a Class A offense. It all goes back to evolution: Men learned that they had to be vigilant about whom you had sex with because they could never really tell if a kid was theirs, while women sought an emotional connection with a guy who’d commit to sticking around and raising them. According to the study, this theory still holds true, but it’s not so black and white. In fact, a man’s personality (rather than his ego) plays a bigger role in how he experiences jealousy. The researchers found that men who were secure in their attachments to women, were more likely to get jealous over emotional infidelity.

She Said: When it comes to cheating, sexual in-

discretions are the lesser of the two evils; not because it’s necessarily easier to forgive a partner’s one-night stand, but because an emotional affair generally means the cheater has already thrown in the towel on your relationship. Whoever makes it, there is no such thing as accidentally getting a little too drunk and carrying on a passionate love affair. There’s no emotional cheating equivalent to a one-night stand. It’s generally quite a calculated and elaborate production to hide one. That’s not to say that physical cheating happens only under those one-night-only inebriated conditions, but purely physically cheating generally does, if you’re having a long-term sexual affair or hooking up with a friend who isn’t your significant other, chances are that it’s either a result of or has resulted in emotional infidelity as well. So the problem isn’t that one kind of cheating is more or less forgivable than the other; it’s that forgiving and forgetting isn’t an option when your partner has emotionally cheated. Your partner wants out but can’t or won’t pull the trigger, consciously or subconsciously forcing their partner to be the one who calls it quits. We can fathom forgiving and moving past a partner’s one-night-stand, but we don’t know a single couple who has been able to continue after an emotional infidelity, especially when, the cheater needs to make a concerted effort to fall back in love with their significant other. Your secound Trimester Pregnancy Guide! All You Need To Know About Your Body & Your Baby!

PART 2

Learn about second trimester visits and tests Check your urine and blood pressure, perform blood tests to check that all are within range, do a multiple marker screening, a blood test to measure the quantity of three or four substances that can give you information about your baby’s risk for Down syndrome.

Find a prenatal exercise class It’s a great way to meet other pregnant women and stay motivated to exercise.

Shop for maternity clothes

Even if you’re not visibly pregnant yet, maternity clothes may be more comfortable now. Eat healthy! You need an additional 300 calories a day for yourself and your growing baby. Make them count!

Plan some adult time Your excitement about your baby is revving up, but take a moment to enjoy this baby-free time.

Get your teeth cleaned Not only is it safe to get your teeth cleaned during pregnancy, but it’s also highly recommended. Recent studies suggest an association between severe gum disease and preterm labor, and regular trips to the dentist can help you avoid this risk. Most injectable anesthetics that dentists use are considered safe. Even tooth X-rays are considered safe, as long as you’re covered with a lead apron.

Check your rings If pregnancy swelling is making your rings feel snug, do yourself a favor and take them off now before they get stuck! 82 |

| April 2013

Write a letter to your baby If writing isn’t your style, put together a collage or a memory box of pregnancy mementos.

Create a baby list Family and friends will soon be wondering what you need or want, particularly if someone’s throwing you a baby shower.

Start sleeping on your side Decide whether you’ll find out the sex of your baby Boy, girl – or big surprise? If you have an ultrasound or an amniocentesis coming up, you’ll need to choose now.

Start moisturizing your belly Slathering on the lotion may not prevent stretch marks, but it will help stop itchiness!

Once you reach mid-pregnancy, it’s wise to snooze on your side, especially your left side – to improve blood flow and reduce swelling.

Think about your maternity leave If you’re planning to take maternity leave, check in with your human resources department or your supervisor now.

Track your weight gain The optimum is gaining 1 to 5 pounds in the first trimester and about 1 pound per week for the rest of your pregnancy for the optimal growth of your baby.

Start doing Kegel exercises Kegels keep your pelvic floor muscles strong through pregnancy and beyond.

Tackle your home improvement projects The nesting instinct may be kicking in. If so, make the most of it!

Dedicate time to your partner and celebrate what makes you love one another! In the midst of all your baby prep, take time to bond with your partner

Crack The Codes Of Your Dreams!

Get The Meanings Of Common Dream Symbols

Death This makes for a sad dream, but death isn’t as ominous a theme as you’d think; it’s more about change on the horizon. If someone you know dies in a dream you have, think about your connection to that person. Is there an aspect of your relationship that needs changing? Or is there something about the person’s life that you’d like to see manifesting itself in your own? Death-related dreams might also be about incoming change or the dreamer’s need to change.

Bugs Creepy-crawlies are the manifestation of problems that we’re not facing. Bugs on your skin mean an unsettling change is taking place in your life. The more bugs you encounter in your dream, the greater your problems and unconscious anxieties.

Hair Hair in our sleep life has multiple meanings, including sensuality, self-image, and strength. If you’re cutting your hair, that symbolizes taking power over your life and letting go of unnecessary burdens. Brushing or fixing your hair alludes to heightened self-consciousness. Hair falling out has to do with fear of getting old and/or physical weakness.

Babies Babies in dreams are symbols of purity, rebirth, and vulnerability. Again, it’s important to recognize what’s happening with the baby to figure out how it relates to your life. A crying or abandoned baby could mean that you’re not paying enough attention to your own needs. Perhaps you feel especially needy and vulnerable right now, or you might have doubts about being able to take care of someone other than yourself. 84 |

Mirrors Mirrors in dreams reflect our inner qualities; both how others perceive us and how we see ourselves. If the mirror is foggy or clouded, however, that means we’re not seeing things accurately and need to figure out why. Shattering a mirror is allegedly bad luck in real life, but in the dream world, it represents breaking away from the inner self.

Your points of view will be firm, you’ll know very well what you’ll have to do and you won’t allow anybody to stand in your way. You’ll accept collaboration relationships, you’ll even want them, but in your own terms. Sometimes you’ll take into consideration the other’s opinion, but only on the condition that there’s some affective motivation or a serious partnership-related interest at stake. Aries in a Nutshell Aries is the first of the zodiac signs. Aries is the sign of the self, people born under this sign strongly project their personalities onto others and can be very self-oriented. Aries tend to venture out into the world and leave impressions on others that they are exciting, vibrant and talkative. Aries tend to live adventurous lives and like to be the center of attention, but rightly so since they are natural, confident leaders. Aries are enthusiastic about their goals and enjoy the thrill of the hunt, “wanting is always better then getting” is a good way to sum it up. Aries are very impulsive and usually do not think before they act or speak. Too often Aries will say whatever pops into their head and usually end up regretting it later! Aries in Love On the positive side, Arians are very passionate, they have a vibrant personality, they are fun loving and not a single moment with them is boring. Arians are spontaneous and not calculative. They make dedicated partners. On the negative side, they are prone to impulsive behavior, they may be very moody at times which can make it hard to cope with them, they are not alien to feelings of jealousy, they never learnt to compromise which can create a lot of tension in relationships. The dominating nature of Arians can also be a huge turn off for some people. Aries and Business Aries are activists. If a business idea comes their way, they tend to plunge right in. Aries are more than willing to take a gamble and follow their dreams and goals. However, if success is not immediate, they tend to lose interest and give up easily. Aries are notorious for not finishing what they have begun. This is due to the low tolerance for boredom and lack of patience. If the excitement is gone from their business idea, they go off and search for it elsewhere. Aries and Friendship Aries are good friends, they always look out for their friends with caring and generosity and will protect them should the need arise and encourage them with their natural optimism. If confronted, Aries can turn to be quite childish, they will fight back with their aggressive nature and are known to have temper tantrums should they not get their way. 90 |
