WOMEN OF TODAY
W
e, women of this age, fight different battles every day. A single mum fighting to prove she’s capable of raising her kids on her own. A divorcee fights being perceived as a notorious woman. A single lady approaching her forties who fights to evade the interrogative questions of “why she’s still not married yet”. The society we live in has never ceased to label women based on their social or employment status. Single or married, working or a stay-at-home mum, every woman finds herself cornered with a pile of judgments and accusations.
Throughout history, women have fought for their rights, for equality, and for their voice to be heard. Despite how far we’ve come and with all the front lines we conquered in this battle, we’re still burdened with so much to deal with, things that the winds of change haven’t swept out of our way. Basically, things that were deeply-rooted in our cultures for decades, and as modern as this age gets, some matters will always remain backwards and rusted. In a society that can be considered patriarchal, we, the women, are not forgiven for the mistakes that men do. We don’t have the freedom to express as much as men do without being judged. And more often than not, we’re looked down as the less competent gender. Addressing the problems and the struggles can go on and on, but right now, all I want to do, is to bow in respect and admiration for the fighter in every woman. Here’s a round of applause for the women who stood their ground in the face of adversity. Here’s to the women who were knocked out several times, yet stood up stronger, more confident, and shining brighter than ever. Here’s to the women who chased their dream and never allowed anyone to bring their spirits down. Here’s to the bold, to the daring, to those who tried and succeeded in winning their battles, and those who are still trying to stand for themselves. It’s because of you, women , that the universe keeps evolving.

STOP MASKING YOUR EMOTIONS
W
e’ve all done that at one point or another in our lives; we hid our real feelings and acted like everything was fine when actually it was not. Why would we every hide the reality of how we feel? Because we are all afraid of breaking; everyone can only bend their backs too far before they snap and break. While nothing is actually wrong with breaking, we are all humans, society has taught us the weakness is unacceptable. However, little do the emotional-maskers know the impacts of hiding the negative emotions.
WHY WE MASK OUR EMOTIONS IN THE FIRST PLACE? Most of the time when we express how we feel, we get told that “It’s not that bad” or people start calling us “Drama queens”. Such phrases make us feel exposed and uncomfortable. Thus, we start shutting down such emotions the next time we encounter them again. Those trapped feelings get exposed when you find yourself uncontrollably yelling when angry or cracking under the slightest pressure. Those symptoms unravel the fact that you need to voice your emotions and let them out. THE IMPLICATIONS OF HIDING OUR FEELINGS Hiding our emotions result in negative impacts psychologically, physically, and mentally. Tiredness and depression result from suppressing your negative 36 | APRIL 2019
emotions. This can reflect on your skin in which makes it look dull and out of glow. The same goes for your hair; you will start losing a plenty of hair strands. Your hair will get thinner and lose its shine. You might realize that your appetite got affected as well; some people tend to skip food and others may binge on unhealthy snacks to forget their pain. Anxiety and depression are the closest buddies to suppressed emotions. You’ll find your mind wandering, feeling constantly stressed, and out of control. The thing about locking away your emotions means that you may start to lock away even the good ones, as well. When you refuse to let yourself feel sadness or grief, you may find that you’re unable to express joy, as well. Destroy the societal barriers of how they perceive expressing as a sign of weakness and start being yourself. Express loudly your sadness, your fears, your joy, and enjoy the little things in life.

Unfortunately nowadays regardless of the personal status, social standards, obligations…etc, almost everyone is feeling constantly stressed or burnt out! WHY? Because for our generation most of us grew up believing that the more we sacrifice and neglect our needs the bigger the reward. Since we were in school, we were brought up to the idea that the more we stay up nights studying, the better our grades will be! Plus a fact that we cannot deny is that we are constantly put under pressure to prove ourselves to others all the time. What will people say? What will they think of that? Am I really capable? Am I good enough? Taking care of yourself is not a luxury like most of people believe it is, it’s crucial. Most people’s mindset overwhelm them with a great feeling of guilt if they thought about going to the gym, or for lunch, or even to hang out for an hour with some friends. CREATING A SIMPLE SELF-CARE ROUTINE WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE UPSIDE DOWN! •Self-care will give you the
ability to take care of your loved ones Do you remember the safety instructions in any air flight if there was a drop in the cabin oxygen levels? You need to put your own oxygen mask first before you can support or help your own kids! Why? Simply because if you couldn’t take care of yourself first, you will never be able to take care of anyone else even if it was your own baby. The equation is as simple as that. •It’s ok to take a BREAK If you are stuck in a problem at work, and you decide to leave your office for 10 minutes and go outside the building for some fresh air, don’t you feel more focused to think about that problem again when you come back in! Of course you do. Why? Because you simply took a BREAK. •Don’t wait till you reach “ Overload Burnout” Whether you are a man or a woman, and regardless of your age, these days everyone is constantly overloaded and overwhelmed with tons of responsibilities, duties and deadlines. We’ve all been there: you push yourself to the point that you can’t take anymore so you just give up. Taking care of yourself will help
you avoid getting to that point where you cry out saying I can’t take this anymore! Throughout my coaching sessions, I hear a lot “ I don’t have time” “I wish I could do that, but I’m so overwhelmed by responsibilities”, “Self-care! Please be realistic in what you ask me to do!”….etc Taking care of yourself by the way is much more simpler than you can imagine. It is simply about finding something that you can do on the regular to make you feel peaceful and relaxed. It’s positive things that you do purposely to get you away from the pressure of your to-do list(s). Yes your own self needs to be taken care of. No you should not feel guilty about it. Yes your happiness should be your number 1 priority. No that doesn’t mean you are selfish. It simply means you that you must be OK to be able to help the ones you love be happy as well.

COLORFUL DESSERTS FOR SPRING CAKE BATTER ICE CREAM BALLS INGREDIENTS: •1 pint vanilla ice cream •4 ounces cream cheese, softened •2/3 cup vanilla cake mix powder •2 tablespoons powdered sugar •3 Cups white chocolate, melted •sprinkles •lollipop sticks, parchment paper, and plastic gloves DIRECTIONS: 1. In a small bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth, add the cake mix powder, and powdered sugar and beat again. 2. Scoop the ice cream into a large bowl then scoop dollops of the cream cheese mixture into the ice cream and swirl together with a knife then quickly place back in the ice cream container and freeze until solid. 3. Put on your gloves. Scoop out 1/3 cup sized balls of ice cream and quickly smoosh into balls with your hands then stick in a lollipop stick. 4. Place onto the parchment paper on a plate and immediately freeze while you quickly repeat with the remaining balls. Freeze for 2 hours or overnight. 5. Place the white chocolate into a measuring cup and sprinkles in another. 6. Remove the ice cream from the freezer and quickly dip in the white chocolate and sprinkles then place back in the freezer. Allow to freeze for 3 hours then serve. 42 | APRIL 2019
MARSHMALLOW SPRINKLE SANDWICHES INGREDIENTS: • 4 egg whites • 1 cup 200 g superfine sugar • 1 tablespoon light corn syrup • Pinch of cream of tartar • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste • 8 ounces 240 g best-quality dark or milk chocolate • 3 tablespoons 45 ml vegetable oil • Homemade cookies and Sprinkles of your choice • Large pastry bag and large plain round pastry tip DIRECTIONS: 1. Wipe the stainless steel bowl and whisk of an electric mixer with a paper towel dampened with lemon juice to eliminate any trace of grease. Put the egg whites, sugar, corn syrup, cream of tartar in the bowl and put it over a saucepan. Whisk constantly but gently until the mixture reaches 130°F (54°C) 2. Transfer the bowl to the mixer. Beat the mixture on low speed for 2 minutes, then increase the speed to medium and beat for 2 more minutes. Increase the speed to high and beat until very thick and glossy. Add the vanilla bean (or extract) and beat well. 3. Line a baking sheet with wax paper and lay 6 of the cookies inside-up on the wax paper. 4. Fill a large pastry bag fitted with a large plain round tip with the prepared Marshmallow Frosting and pipe a big dollop on top. Place another cookie, right side up, on top and repeat with another dollop and cookie. 5. In a double boiler, or in a microwave-safe bowl, melt the chocolate and oil until smooth, stirring occasionally. 6. Carefully dip one end of each sandwich in the chocolate coating and lay back down on the wax paper. Sprinkle the chocolate areas with your favourite sprinkles, tossing the sprinkles to cover the sides. Let them sit to firm up and you’re ready to go.

nce upon a time, men and women stepped into marriage with very clear ideas about the distinct role of each: he would go off to work and she would stay home, cook, clean, and raise the children. Today many husbands and wives perceive the allotment of responsibilities as unfair which ends up with deep conflict and this has led to a significant change of roles.

When you consistently feel as if you are in an endless battle over household responsibilities and roles with your home and children, your relationship begins to feel argumentative. If you and your spouse constantly go from being teammates to opponents, your marriage will quickly start to feel unsafe, and when unresolved power struggles lead to a relational tug-ofwar over who will do what in order to manage the daily life, the result can fracture the bond that holds a couple together. Sometimes marriage becomes so stressful when the man steers full responsibility to his wife. She gets squeezed with time and a long list of chores and duties keep chasing her daily. She reaches a level where she can no longer look after her appearance or even her mood. Then, the woman starts feeling emotionally abused and she might be holding on to the marriage because either she’s scared to walk away or she might be relying on her husband as her sole financial resource. She’s now stuck and helpless! A woman’s independence plays a key role in a long-lasting marriage. Women don’t necessarily need men in their lives in order to survive financially and as a result, expectations should be completely different from marriage vs. the old times of our grandparents.
The working woman is of crucial necessity nowadays; in order to stabilize herself and to secure her future no matter what happens. A financially independent woman brings to a marriage a much different perspective than a freshout-of-college bride. She most likely has a good career that she worked hard to excel in, and, therefore, won’t rely on another half to make ends meet. She wants someone who can share this journey with her, not try to take the spotlight and put her on the backburner. She wants a partner who has similar goals, but who will also support her in her own ambitions. She is looking for someone who makes her even stronger and more empowered as a woman. This woman typically needs some assurance that marriage won’t take away from, but rather enhance, the life she already has and of course she will deal with her husband the same way so that the marriage becomes harmonious. Independence is one of the most important variables that influences a woman’s quality of life, which subsequently impacts the marriage positively. She will earn selfconfidence, she gets empowered to make decisions, she can buy things for herself and she will definitely support the household whenever needed. She will understand and value money a lot more and she will genuinely appreciate how life is for him as he’s the one who has been
working for the long haul. Above all, life will become more peaceful as she will neither have the time nor the energy to argue and fight. Sharing responsibility is of utmost importance between any couple, it means being on the same team. Thriving couples work together to manage everyday responsibilities. They utilize their individual gifts and talents as they negotiate ways to divide household duties fairly; so that both partners feel satisfied with the distribution of responsibility. The reasons people get married may have changed over the years. In ancient times, it was to survive. But modern marriages are mostly about financially independent women who want to do more than just survive. They want to live, and they want to love. They need someone who will be there for them and make their life better. Men need to see women in their lives enjoying their own success. Men should take time to recognize and acknowledge a woman’s strengths and respect her for all that she brings to their relationship. And when it comes to the romantic connection, rest assured that women want the same things men want; but they might just want them in a different order. It goes without saying that parents’ main objective is to bring up their children to know what’s right and what’s wrong. At the very early years of childhood, parents follow strict disciplinary action to reach this objective with their children, often projected in the reward and punishment method. This brings us to a very important question; reward vs. punishment, which is more effective? In order to be able to answer this question, we need a thorough understanding of both.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE PUNISH OUR CHILDREN? One of the biggest misconceptions is thinking that guilt-tripping your child or making them feel bad about something they did can stop a bad behaviour. Using punishment with children focuses on the short term result by stopping the bad behaviour right away or getting a task done right now.s I invite you to think a little deeper starting by the exploration of the long-term effect of punishment on our children. When children are punished they don’t learn self-discipline. That is because punishment is an external factor and self-discipline requires inner motivation. Using this method invites one of the following behaviours. Either your child will comply to avoid punishment and accordingly obey any order given without thinking just to avoid punishment. In this case, gradually the child will grow up adopting the habit of being submissive to anything and everything without questioning the decision or the action. Punishment can also lead to the child developing a sneaky behaviour and to begin thinking of repeating the same mistake, but this time without being caught. Moreover, some may become rebellious resulting in endless power struggles with their parents inviting stubbornness that most parents complain about. As a result, parents begin to complain about their children’s behaviour and begin to wonder
why they’ve stopped responding to this method. Little do the parents know that they are, in a way, responsible for inviting this behaviour by using an ineffective discipline tool. Punishment doesn’t teach our children to solve a problem. CAN REWARDS BE REGARDED AS INCENTIVES? We often hear parents passing promises to their children as “If you finish your homework, I will give u a candy”, “If u pass your test, I will get u a toy.” etc... Here, I will invite you again to dig deeper in the following questions: What skill are they learning when they receive a reward? Is it effective on the long term? What if you can’t keep up with the habit of rewarding them for any reason? Are they going to stay on task or they will lose interest? Rewarding children can teach them the concept of a bribe. By time, no reward will be good enough for them. Rewards are external motivators and they won’t help children develop the desire to succeed based on inner motivation. MISTAKES ARE A GOOD OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN We grew up in a society the pressures everyone to be perfect; mistakes are not allowed or acceptable. Parents prevent their children from making any mistake and argue with anyone who highlights a weakness area that needs improvement. Going through this we forget to teach
our children that there is a positive side of getting it wrong as mistakes are a good opportunity to learn. Learning from mistakes is a part of the child’s development as it encourages them to learn to do things in a different way as they feel they are capable. HOW TO HELP CHILDREN LEARN FROM MISTAKES? FOCUS ON SOLUTIONS. Children are excellent problem solvers and have many creative ideas when given the chance by adults to brainstorm. The solutions you will find together should be following the 3 Rs and H rule; Respectful, Relatable, Reasonable and Helpful. Use the following steps to help train your child to focus more on solutions: • Tell them that you are not expecting them to be perfect and that they are loved despite any mistake. • Provide some examples of your own mistakes, the consequences and how you learned from them. • Encourage them to take responsibility of their actions without blaming anyone else. • Avoid pointing out their previous mistakes; instead focus on what you have in hand. • If the agreed upon solution didn’t work, never give up just reassess the situation and find another solution. Throughout a lifetime, learning from mistakes helps develop wisdom and good judgement. Just have the courage to be imperfect, failure is just a feedback.
