The Editor's Note The day of love is approaching, but true amour can’t last only one day! Unconventional gifts, exorbitant jewelry, flowers and box of chocolates are exchanged among lovers as a sign of love on Valentine’s Day. Exaggerated red decorations loom out, in the memory of Saint Valentine, the patron saint of love, who unfortunately did not envision the possibility of someday to be considered as the International symbol of chocolates and gifts! People who have went through a series of unfortunate failures as well as couples who are going through unstable relationships; find it not amusing to be reminded of how unlucky they are, while they fail to realize that Valentine’s Day is nothing but an illogical fling... and I propose we stop this madness and work on devoting 365 days to love. If we look back to the origin of this occasion, we see that Saint Valentine’s main goal was to encourage sacred marriages between lovey doveys during hard times, knowing that marriage is a life-time commitment act, and that vows were very hard to fulfill. He didn’t see love as easy as people see it nowadays. In fact, the historical circumstances of this specific period demonstrated the hardships and costs of love. Love and suffering are two faces of the same coin. Love is words unsaid, only felt; Love is many things but it is not the sum of them; Love is a series of small acts that happen every single day; Love is easy to experience but hard to describe with satisfaction; Love is a matter of giving not receiving; Love is an affection without any limitations; Love is an open door to forgiveness. It keeps no records of the past; Love is what you want it to be; Love has serenity, neither boastful nor hypocrite; Last but not least, love is not only for one person, but for the entire humanity. The world is full of definitions of love. I have learned in my personal life that with unconditional love comes unconditional suffering. Sometimes I consider my sufferings as a badge of honor, only to remind myself of how much I loved by how much I previously suffered. One must always remind himself/herself that love always triumph. Love gives hope and strength. So put down the expensive roses, the fancy chocolates, and exorbitant jewelry, and make a new resolutions; to make the act of giving, a daily habit, and to nourish your relationship with beloved ones - partner, family member, a friend, or even someone dear to you. For this issue, whether you are looking for some nutrition and fitness tips, mother-and-child relationship information, beauty and fashion advices, or the best romantic getaways to go with your Valentine, we’ve got you covered. This issue is far from cliché, because we want it to be real for you. But above all, we want you to remind yourself everyday of how special you are… because you are loved.

FASHION NEWS Julia Roberts is the New Face Of Givenchy 2015 The Hollywood American actress is fronting Givenchy’s Spring/Summer 2015 ad campaign. The beautiful 47-years old star looks classic and chic in the black and white collection. Sharp suits, belted trousers, leather high waist trousers, collared shirt, and natural look… Roberts is pictured in a serious manner, and still she is a pretty woman. Roberts showcases all facets of that character with a masculine strength and feminine vibe. Givenchy’s creative director Riccardo Tisci new collection portrays women as sexy and powerful, sensual and self-confident. He is also gives strength to his collection by mixing materials, fabrics, and colors, such as: printed chiffon, eyelet on lace, embellished leather, and semi-precious stones. Tisci has earned a reputation for casting unusual stars like Marina Abramovic and Isabelle Huppert in previous campaigns. It seems that Givenchy will earn tremendous profits out of their new face of beauty.

Copying & Cheating 2015 Runway Shows by: Ghadir alAgabany

W

hile the fashion executives are on their tiptoes, preparing for Fall/Winter 2015- 2016 runways and photo-shoots, fashion fans are attentively awaiting the dazzling collection of Spring 2015 fashion trends. Fashion designers and cosmopolitan brands will showcase their latest styles inspired by previous seasons, in many European countries this month! It’s time to clean out your closet, and fill it with new colourful superb spring looks and styles, but don’t get rid of the older ones, because for this season… old is gold.

Colour Palette This season is highly inspired by the colours and shades of rainbow. Sunshine yellow, classic blue, grassy green, strawberry ice, and tomato red… are natural colours with subtle warm tones. The combination of black and white never gets old. Tip of the day: it’s not the amount of colours you have or wear that will make you stand out, it’s how you mix them!

Haute Hippie 70s The most fashionable and memorable era that keeps coming back and forth every several seasons is back! This season’s trends may not so much reflect the 80s and 90s styles, as the 70s, which was the coolest, the hippest and the funkiest era of all times! Flare pants, jumpsuits, disco platforms, floppy hats, huge shades, fringe fiesta, pale blue denim, kimonos, wrap front shirts, headbands and chic bohemian styles.

Prints While strips and gingham are upcoming styles that will invade this season, floral patterns will persistently be a symbol of the coming spring. >>

Denim Dynasty It seems that jeans will never get old-fashioned. I sincerely don’t even think that Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss back in 1873 acknowledged the fact that it will remain almost 150 years later and to be continued. It does not come and go, it’s forever here…. an amazing invention indeed.

In the Army Now Surprisingly, the current global political environment largely affects our fashionable lifestyle. Many nations are becoming extremely economical, social, and politically opinionated, influencing the fashion industry in expressing support or opposition by showcasing related trends. Nothing can beat sexy, smart, and powerful military style clothing.

SPOTTED CELEBS LATEST NEWS & GOSSIP

Eminem Surprises Teenage Fan Hours Before Dying of Cancer The popular superstar paid a visit to the 17-years old teenage fan, Gage Garmo, who has been battling with bone cancer since 2008 during his freshman year in high school. Gage’s last wish was to meet his favorite rap singer, Eminem, face-to-face, and so his friends took the initiative to spread the word out on social media. The Rainbow Connection, a charity organization that aims to fulfill the last wishes of severely ill children, decided to reach Eminem. Gage was flattered and overwhelmed when the superstar stepped into his house.

A Message to Justin Bieber: “You Look Like A Douchebag” It seems that Naya Rivera’s continuous swaggers against celebrities are not going to end… from Kim Kardashian to Justin Bieber, this women deserves an Oscar award! The Glee actress expressed her opinion to ‘The View’ regarding the new Calvin Klein ads that featured Justin Bieber, claiming that it was clearly Photoshopped, since everyone knows Bieber’s real body from topless photos that he shares on social media.

From ‘The Bachelorette’ to a Beautiful Wedding Ceremony On Sunday, January 18th, 2015, Chris Siegfried and Desiree Hartsock finally tied the knot at Palos Verdes in California. The couple, who got engaged on camera during the season finale of The Bachelorette in August, expressed their excitement and wedding plans to the media. Siegfried tweeted “So excited for the big day! And I can’t wait to share with everyone!” three days prior the wedding. The beautiful bride was dressed in a one-shoulder lace dress by Maggie Sottero, and wore her diamond ring that featured more than 200 small diamonds on a rose gold and platinum band. The wedding ceremony was very short, and so the after party… it seems that the couple couldn’t wait any longer. 32 | February 2015

“I could care less about the Photoshopping than the shirtless selfie. It’s annoying and you look like a douchebag. Girls don’t want to date guys that are constantly in a mirror ... Like, stop. Go fix something in the house. That’s hotter.” Rivera said. While she can simply pay less attention to his social media accounts, Rivera is absolutely right… fixing something in the house and making a sandwich is hotter indeed, Bieber!

Are Derma Fillers Good for You?

E

DR. ADEL AMR and DR. SARAH ABDALLAH

34 | February 2015

verybody would love to keep their youthful appearance for their entire life, but as we grow old some changes take place in our bodies, including our skin. It loses its tightness and stretches a bit. It also loses some of its volume. This makes the muscles work closer to the skin, causing the appearance of wrinkles. Hereditary factors, weight loss, prolonged sun exposure, smoking, and not drinking enough water are factors that contribute to our skin changes.

Plastic surgeons have different modalities to ease those changes and make them softer and less apparent. One of the most interesting ways is through dermal fillers, used for augmenting the facial soft tissue. The cheek and the lips are two of the most attractive features of the face. A beautiful cheek should be well defined, full and ovoid with its peek (cheek bone) high and full. The upper lip should be well defined, more protruding than the lower lip while the lower should be fuller. Before thinking of going through with injecting dermal fillers, everybody should have some answers to their questions; like what are they? Are there different types? Who is a good candidate? How will the procedure be performed? Recovery, side effects, and are there other options? Dermal fillers are injectable materials that help to diminish facial lines and restore volume and fullness of the face. They are materials that originally exist in our skin and we lose it by time. They should not be mistaken for a botox injection, as botox is used to treat different deformities that also occur in the skin. Sometimes the combined use of botox and fillers is indicated for some people. We can use the dermal fillers to enhance the lips, augment cheekbones, soften facial wrinkles and fold around the mouth (nasolabial folds) or correct minor nasal deformities. We can also use them in conjunction with facial surgeries. Fillers differ in their composition, longevity, and consistency. Most are temporary which lasts up to nine months. During this time our bodies start absorbing them, which makes them considered very safe. Other fillers are permanent and not absorbed by the body. They last longer and have higher incidence of complications. It is advisable to try out a temporary product first to make sure you are satisfied with the result as once you have had a permanent product injected they can be only removed by surgery. The procedure of injecting dermal fillers is a simple office-based procedure with predictable results and relatively minimal side effects and risks. First, the surgeon examines and evaluates the face, determining the areas that need to be augmented. Those areas are marked and photographs are taken. Then a local anesthetic cream is applied to numb the skin. Sometimes injection of local anesthetics might be needed. The anesthetic is then wiped off and the skin is cleansed with an

antibacterial agent. Each area is then injected with massaging and after evaluation, more filler is added if needed. The procedure usually doesn’t take a long time, depending on the areas injected. Once the patient and the surgeon are satisfied, the markings are cleansed. There is no downtime with dermal fillers. Most of the activities could be resumed right away. Results are clear right away, but minor changes might occur within a couple of days to reach the exact final appearance. There might be mild bruising or numbness, although this is not common and in the rare situations when it happens, it usually resolves in few days and can be decreased by using an icepack. As mentioned before the procedure has minimal risks and side effects. They may include asymmetry, infection at the injection site, lumps, under- or overcorrection. In some cases optimal results cannot be achieved in a single procedure. And as most of the fillers dissipate with time repeated sessions would be needed to maintain the results. Although the use of dermal fillers is a very attractive procedure, we should understand that it is not designed to take the place of surgeries. Restoring volume and smoothing wrinkles still does not reverse the process of aging skin, and in certain situations, deformities can only be corrected surgically. February 2015 | 35

Nail Guide By: HOSSAM EL MARAGHY

N

ail care should be an essential part of everybody’s beauty care routine. In fact, taking care of our nails is one of the first beauty treatments we were taught, where we trim them, file them, or sometimes bite some of them. For some women, nail care can be also fun, where they paint their fingers and toes in colors, and shape them too. You can also tell a lot about people by how they take care of their nails.

Getting ready for foot-care at home: • First, sit somewhere comfortable where you can put your feet within easy reach, and gather your tools and products • Set up your towel near a basin or bathtub and lay out a paper towel for your feet • Remove any old nail polish • Trim your toenails to the desired length • File your nails into even shapes using regular strokes • Use cotton pads to remove any debris • Apply moisturizer to the tops of your nails and cuticles and rub them in circular motions • Soak both feet in this natural footbath and relax • Take your feet out of the soak and use foot scrub to get rid of all the dead cells on the feet, hands and nails • Use a cotton cloth to wipe off your feet and to get those last bits of dead skin • Apply your moisturizer all over your feet in circular motions • Wear a plastic bag, and socks over the bags, for only one hour • Clean with distilled water (warm water is the best) • Pat dry with a cotton towel and use a very light moisturizer afterwards • Admire your beautiful nails

Sweet Milk Foot and Hand Soak Ingredients: 1/2 cup ground brown sugar 2 cups coconut milk 7 cups rose water 36 | February 2015

Directions: In a large saucepan, heat the milk and rose water. When it’s steaming, add sugar. Allow to cool until the mixture is bearable enough for you to place feet in. Pour into a bowl large enough to fit both feet. Soak for 10 minutes. You can either rinse now, or use some extra sugar to scrub your feet. Rinse well, then apply moisturizer.

Hand & Foot scrub Ingredients: 2 table spoon ground sea salt 2 teaspoon of ground oatmeal 1 teaspoon of baking soda Directions: Combine ingredients, and add enough water (rose water works well too) to make a paste. Apply to skin and rub gently. Rinse and gently pat dry. Although the ingredients in these beauty recipes are natural, remember that it is still possible to be allergic to anything applied to the skin. To test ingredients, make only a portion of the recipe you intend to use. Wash and gently dry a small patch of skin inside your elbow. Apply a little of the mix to the skin and leave for 48 hours. If you experience any redness or swelling, discard recipes and don’t use.

Bringing Hair Expertise to Your Doorstep Laetitia Guenauo Trains Egyptian Hair Stylists

W

orld-renowned hairstylist and international L’Oréal Professionnel ambassador, Laetitia Guenauo, who is known for her innovative creations on the fashion and cinema scene, conducted a series of styling sessions last November in Cairo for exclusive professional hair stylists in Egypt, in partnership with L’Oréal Professionnel. The styling sessions took place at the Dusit Thani Lakeview Cairo, where Laetitia transformed three models into stunning stars with just a few touches using special L’Oreal products, and the amazing transformations were showcased thereafter. The Ladybird team had a chance to chat with Laetitia about her work, and took a deeper look into her visions for upcoming fashion trends and also her recommendations regarding products and styles.

38 | February 2015

According to Laetitia, the big trends for this year are ombré, sombré, splash lights, and highlights at the hair-ends. Pixie cuts with a copper or red base is also very ‘in’ this season, as well as tie and dye with the tones of gold, red, and dark brown. There is something to please everyone with their various tastes. When it comes to the styles Laetitia strongly discouraged, she had one word to say – Monotone. “Overall single colors are not a la mode” she says, “and lacks light and modernity.” This is the season to get some color into your tresses, ladies. She also advises that if for any reason you need to wear your hair under a hat, go for the wave. Straight tresses aren’t fashionable this year. Laetitia said that “a good Hairdresser should guide you depending on your hair type, but

you need to take care of your hair as you do for your skin. Skin gets old as well as the hair, but unfortunately you cannot see it on the hair as much.” She recommends the following, which are her top five favorites; • A very good shampoo from L’Oreal Professionnel or Kerastasse • Your conditioner from L’Oreal Professionnel or Kerastasse • Hair Masque Kerastasse • Oil Mythique • Sparay de Brilliance (to hydrate and crystallize the hair) Laetitia also has a rocking 3-yearold e-learning website, designed especially for stylists around the world – and is currently quite popular in over 80 countries, with over 7000 salons worldwide using her online resources which, according to Laetitia, are

available for ‘rent’. “Since some hairdressers live far away and cannot attend trainings, I created the idea of ‘renting a salon’ and do our training videos there to give the hairdressers an opportunity to learn the exact step by step to do creations like chignons, haircuts, latest coloration techniques, and so on. We start from the very basics to the very professional. Now hair training is accessible for everyone through this webside,” Laetitia said. With salons and hair stylist’s time and budget constraints, Laetitia has taken it on herself to deliver her trainings where possible, using the e-learning website as a means through which to get her expertise across to the world, using L’Oreal Professionnel products which she highly recommends. We advise you to check her online tutorials for best hair results.

ho said that Valentine’s Day is only for couples? This year, instead of booking a candlelight dinner in a chic restaurant, invite the gang over for a cheerful, heartwarming celebration.

Many couples suppose that booking a fullcourse dinner in a well-reputed restaurant will reignite the spark and revive feeling that is buried deep, deep down. Truth is, to bring the passion and joy back into your relationships, you should go on double dates and foursomes, to encourage open discussions and revelations. Although dinner for two may sound intimate, amorous, and idealistic, both partners might find that they fake and exaggerate emotions; others may trigger some old problems and end up fighting instead of enjoying that one special night of the year. But when friends are present, the revelations about private lives and personal feelings become more honest, making things move smoothly between each couple. Inviting couples may provide you with some positive views about your own relationship, and having single friends around can also enliven the night. Here are some tips to make the perfect Valentine’s Day dinner party.

42 | February 2015

Invitation: Make a list of all the guests whom you want to invite to the party. Then dedicate an hour to make small homemade cards with a unique messages to your visitors. You can follow the steps below, or add your creative touch. In both cases, make sure to send those cards at least one week ahead, since many people plan their Valentine’s Day in advance. Materials • Blossoms such as daisies, camellias, and lavender • Green and pink card stock • White gouache or ink • Glue • Scissors • Pink or red pen

Steps Cut a mixture of blossoms, and glue them to the front of the folded piece of card stock. Make thin green stems using the green card stock, and then glue them carefully. If you are not talented at drawing, you can instead make hearts, by drawing ‘V’ shape then link the edges with two semi circles. Write a heartwarming message in white gouache or ink, and then seal the envelope with a single lacy bloom.

Home Decorations: Sweet edible decorations can make your home beautiful and cozy. Red, pink, and white decorations will create the perfect ambiance for Valentine’s Day party, but make sure you to make your home decorations. Here are some elegant and easy homemade decorations ideas that will assist you.

Fortune Cookies Cut out 5-inch squares of colored card stock. Use a compass to draw a circle inside the square, then cut out the edges and roll to form a tube. Secure with doublesided tape. Write a fortune on a thin slip of paper and slide into the tube. Place the fortune cookies in a nice glass or crystal bowl. Heart-Shaped Tea Bags Warm your friends up by adding pleasant note to a tea bag. Cut few hearts out of red card stock using a cutter or scissors. Write short notes like “Your are loved,” “You are a dear,” or “Be my friend forever.” Remove the tea bag tag and replace with the red tags using a stapler. Steep each in a hot water and serve.

Scattering Petals Choose a nice spot – could be the dinning table or coffee table – and sprinkle pink and red petals in a heart shape. Save some for your bedroom or private bathroom as an intimate prelude to after-party sex.

Tulip Bouquet Flowers and candy are the international symbols for Valentine’s Day romance. On a small coffee table, put a bouquet of red tulips or any other type of flower, and spread some miniature chocolates to create a lovely floral arrangement. >> February 2015 | 43

Dinner Table: Surprise your beloved one and your friends with an unforgettable dinner table. Whether you are inviting friends or couples, white, red and pink are suitable colors for a festive day at home. If you are not comfortable with romantic color palette, choose any scheme for your table. You can make your own classic designs using simple materials like papers and napkins. Interested‌ It is time to shower you with various dinner table decoration ideas to choose from. To keep it classic, use white table cloth, elegant wine red candles, napkins, white, pink or red petals, fancy table dinner set, a white flower next to each set, and a cute name tag on every set.

Heart Garland Instead of serving juice or wine in standard glasses, cut out hearts using red card and scissors. Make two holes in the middle of the heart and then string the hearts onto a piece of yarn. Cut the string into shorter pieces to use on glass. 44 | February 2015

Handmade Heart Doilies Place a pre-folded square shaped paper napkin, so that the closer corner faces you. Fold right corner towards the left corner and compress, forming a triangle shape. Then fold the left corner towards the triangle’s longest side, flatten, and cut a convex arc near the triangle’s longest side using scissors. Cut off bottom of triangle from the left to right in a semi circle motion. Unfold, and repeat using napkins in several colors.

Party Ideas: Activities Watching a romantic comedy movie is fun with a group of friends. Moulin Rouge is a lovely choice for couples. If you have single friends, pick a comedy movie free of romantic flair.

Food Ask your partner to help you cook a lovely three-course dinner. Serve up a platter of appetizers you master. Stuffed grape-leaves with feta cheese or yogurt, minispanakopita stuffed with marinated minced meat or feta cheese, smoked salmon dip, garlic and cheese bread, baba ghanoush and triangle bread, sausages and dipping, and fresh salads are great options for appetizers. Serve up an intimate meal made with love; smoked salmon with prawns, cream cheese and line vinaigrette, roasted wood pigeon and herbs, fettuccine with seared scallops, tender roast duck with potatoes and carrots, and steak with chips. Embrace and enhance your friend’s mood with a delicious, mouth-watering blueberry cheesecake, red velvet cake, fruit salad, apricot crème brulee tart, or strawberry parfait. February 2015 | 45

Saigon Restaurant and Lounge: The best Asian Fusion Cuisine in Town

A

sian cuisine seems to be on the rise in Cairo, and if you are looking for a memorable and heartening culinary experience, look no further than Saigon Restaurant and lounge. Nestled in Fairmont Nile City, Saigon overlooks a breathtakingly panoramic view of Cairo and the Nile River.

The Saigon Restaurant concept is inspired by the exotic and intriguing interior, as well as contemporary Asian designs. The concept and execution of this restaurant is characterized by elegant simplicity and smart use of lighting, giving a homey and royal atmosphere. The most significant features of the restaurant are the clean minimalist interior walls covered in mother-of-pearl for a glamorous dining experience, classic dining tables that blend flawlessly with the restaurant’s design, the light fixtures which create a cozy and romantic ambiance, and finally, the luxurious view of the remarkable Nile. On the opposite side of the restaurant is a classy private lounge that offers the tastiest cocktails with flair. If you are also looking for the best sushi in town, you’ve come to the right place. The Saigon Restaurant offers an array of fresh and delicious sushi made from the finest ingredients to ensure a mind-blowing taste and flavor. Saigon serves traditional Nigiri selections like salmon, octopus, eel, hamachi and tamago. In addition to a variety of Maki and Temaki rolls, like philadelphia, shrimp tempura, spicy roll, and crispy salmon. The menu offers a variety of popular Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Indonesian, Singaporean, and Malaysian dishes such as Wok Fried Prawn XO, Prawn Red Curry, Pad Thai, Nasi Goreng, and Chicken Sweet and Sour. We opted for the Shrimp Kunafa, Shrimp Sesame Toast, Steamed Shrimp Dumplings, Grilled Beef Tenderloin with assorted mushrooms and young pepper wasabi sauce, Wok Fried Beef Oyster Sauce with shiitake mushroom, bamboo shoots and spring onion, Pan Fried Salmon with wasabi potato purée and teriyaki sauce,

and Sweet and Sour Shrimp with pineapple, onion, capsicum and spring onion. As soon as we placed our orders, our table was garnished with prawn crackers. We instantly started crunching on the crackers; sinking them in three different types of dipping sauces. Around 15 minutes later, a delicious aroma conquered the place. The hot and cold appetizers were served in chic presentation with sweet chili sauce and soy sauce. Frankly, they were above our expectations! For a second, it felt like I had never had kunafa shrimps and steamed dumplings before! Almost everyone on the table agreed that the Shrimp Sesame Toasts are certainly a blast. The Grilled Beef Tenderloin, which came in a generous portion drenched in mouth-watering thick flavored gravy and showered with mushrooms, it was the highlight of the night (at least for me!). The beef was well done as requested and marinated and seasoned well. I enjoyed every piece of it. Although good seafood restaurants are very few in Cairo, Saigon offers a wide selection of seafood appetizers and platters that are made with love. The main dishes seemed soft, succulent, and were marinated with adequate portions of spices, making for an unforgettable dining experience. The Saigon Restaurant satisfied all our Asian cuisine cravings with its quality dishes, extraordinary ambiance, and unusual presentation. We will repeat this experience again indeed, but next time while enjoying Noha, Lana, and Ahmed Harfoush’s amazing performances.

Female Sexual Dysfunction: Lifestyle changes that can help you combat FSD

M

any women have a condition known as FSD, or Female Sexual Dysfunction. Symptoms of this condition include low sexual desire or libido, trouble becoming aroused, trouble having an orgasm, or pain during sex. Sexual dysfunction can be lifelong or temporary. It can happen all the time, only with a certain partner, or only at certain times in life, such as after pregnancy. Health issues, certain prescription medicines, changes in hormone levels, partner or family issues, and psychological concerns can all contribute to FSD. A healthy sex life depends on a complex mix of many factors. Healthy habits and lifestyle changes can increase libido, improve your sex life, and help address FSD. Lets look at lifestyle factors that have a hand in FSD and the changes you can make to rescue your libido and bring back joy and curiosity when it comes to sexual union.

52 | February 2015

5. Limit Alcohol Consumption In excess, alcohol is a drug that is a depressant, and can intensify anxiety. Keeping alcohol consumption to a moderate level is recommended. This means one drink a day for women.

6. Consume Less Caffeine Caffeine is a vasoconstrictor, which means it may have a negative effect on blood flow, especially to the genital regions. While there is no definitive proof linking caffeine to FSD, keeping consumption to moderate levels may be the best practice when it comes to libido and a healthy sex life.

7. Eat Healthfully

1. Quit Smoking The nicotine in tobacco narrows the blood vessels, which can lead to damage in the arteries and veins. The small blood vessels in the clitoris are especially susceptible to damage – thus smoking can have a negative effect on your sex life. Quitting cigarettes can help your libido drastically.

2. Exercise Regular exercise can improve sex life and increase libido. Routine exercise keeps the cardiovascular system healthy, which is important for libido and sexual arousal. Exercise can also increase levels of sex hormones as well as endorphins, since it help women feel better, and improve body image.

3. Reduce Stress Stress is a major libido killer – worse in some ways than heart disease or even cancer, because it is self-induced at gradually ages your body. Stress management techniques such as meditation and yoga can help improve your sex by reducing stress-related hormones - cortisol and adrenaline - that can interfere with sex response hormones.

4. Get More Sleep Lack of sleep has been linked to female sexual response problems and erectile dysfunction in men. As with stress reduction methods, beneficial hormones are released during sleep that improve mood and sex response. Getting enough rest can help increase your libido and improve your sex life.

Eating a diet rich in colorful, antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables is great for good overall health, which in turn can help increase your libido and improve your sex life. Diets based on healthy fruits and vegetables and foods with omega-3 fatty acids, are excellent for good sexual health. Have more libido-boosting foods: lean steak, salmon and fatty-fish, eggs, chocolate, oatmeal, peaches, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, cloves, berries, figs, watermelon, ginger, nuts, seeds, bananas, and avocados. Have less libido-killing foods: oysters, processed baked goods, white flour and sugar products, and dairy.

8. Take Supplements Supplements such as a multivitamin that includes zinc and antioxidants like CoQ10 and lycopene may also help boost libido. Be sure to talk to your doctor about any supplements so you can find the best choices for you.

9. Estrogen Doses Drops in Estrogen levels can easily create vaginal dryness, and prescriptions of the hormone can help and make sex less painful. Estrogen comes in very low doses and is inserted into the vagina as a cream or tablet.

10. Consult your doctor Even if you’re taking a natural approach to boosting your sex drive, it still might be a good idea to consult your doctor to help identify underlying problems. A doctor may suggest proven strategies for enhancing sexual health, such as communicating with your partner, making healthy lifestyle choices, and treating underlying medical conditions. Knowing the root of the problem in your sex life will make it easier to find a solution. February 2015 | 53

Keeping it Clean

The Importance of Good Personal Hygiene

M

aintaining personal hygiene is necessary for many reasons; personal, social, health, psychological or simply as a daily lifestyle. Keeping a good standard of hygiene helps to prevent the development and spread of infections, illnesses and bad odors. Your hygiene also influences your self-esteem, confidence and motivation, weather you are a woman or a man. By being well presented, clean and tidy, you’ll immediately feel more confident, especially in social situations. Our chances of succeeding, either in work or social settings, or especially with the opposite sex, can be altered drastically by maintenance of good hygiene. For your own body image, as well as your physical and social health, personal hygiene is not a matter to be taken lightly or neglected. Lets take a look at area by area:

1.Teeth and Mouth: Your mouth is home to thousands of lurking bacteria. While the grubby teeth are a major turnoff, a whiff of bad breath is by far the worst thing ever – especially in the morning, and after you’ve had coffee, cigarettes, or shortly after a meal. Make sure you visit your dentist regularly to keep a check on plaque buildup or cavities, which also contribute to a smelly mouth. Halitosis (bad breath) can also be a result of gum infection or of dehydration or an empty stomach. Chew gum to keep your breath clean but make sure you incorporate brushing at least twice a day, flossing and antibacterial mouthwash at least once a day.

54 | February 2015

TIP: Eat apples after a meal – they’re known as ‘nature’s toothbrush’ and the fiber in their flesh removes the fuzziness off your teeth after food, as well as fights odors. 2.Hair and Skin-folds: Hair can tend to smell like grease if not washed often or properly, making it a playground for germs, inflammation of the scalp, and also creatures like head-lice! Depending on your hair-type, make sure to wash your hair as often as need be, and dry your hair soon after washing to prevent clamminess and potential odor. Regarding skin – particularly around folds such as armpits or under breasts, which

have a tendency to smell a bit like an old onion salad – make sure you bathe every day and particularly cleanse those odor-prone areas. Armpits can be cleansed with baking soda, lemon, or bath-salts to kill odor-causing bacteria. Invest in the right kind of deodorant. Be sure to wash your clothes often to kill lingering odors as well as bacteria caught in the clothe-fibers. 3.Feet: We’ve all experienced the horror of taking off shoes only to stink out a room with the smell. The feet contain lots of sweat glands. If feet are confined in socks and shoes the sweat has nowhere to ‘evaporate’ and the skin bacteria will in effect

attack to, causing that pungent ‘cheesy’ aroma. To minimize the chances of this happening, be sure to wash feet regularly and dry thoroughly with a soft towel and an anti-bacterial foot powder or a baby talc; allow feet to air when feasible and wear open shoes as much as possible. Change socks more than once a day if needed and make sure they are cotton or other breathable fabric. TIP: If your shoes also smell, you can powder them with baking soda on the inside and leave them overnight. The powder absorbs odors and leaves your shoes smelling neutral. 4.Genital areas: Cleanliness of genitals is primary for both men and women. Genital areas can be prone to bacterial infections and unpleasant aromas if not kept clean – and nothing could be more of a libido-killer for either gender during sex to discover the other smells badly. Note that cleaning genitals also reduces the risk of passing of pathogens and diseases during unprotected sex. Conversely though, too much cleaning with scented products or soaps can cause thrush - a bacterial infection. The best hygiene for all the genital areas is to clean once or twice a day using mild soap and water.

vagina. The anus should be the last part to be cleaned so the bath water or sponge does not become contaminated with bacteria that would be spread to other parts of the body. Note that perfumes and deodorants should not be directly applied to the genital region. If you have your period, change your pads / tampons regularly to avoid buildup of bacteria and odors. Men: The penis, scrotal area and anus, should be cleaned thoroughly but DONT try to clean the inside of the urethra; this can cause serious damage - the penis should be cleaned on the outside only (Special care should be taken by uncircumcised men to make sure the head of the penis is cleaned. Allowing the warm water to act

as a lubricant can do this, and the foreskin should be gently pulled back). Failure to clean this area properly will result in smegma collection, causing bad odors and an increased risk of infection. The area should be cleaned after sex, even if wearing a condom, to prevent bacterial build-up and unpleasant smells arising. Wearing loose fitting cotton underwear can reduce the chance of perspiration build up and subsequent aromas. Do not apply aftershaves or deodorants directly to the genital area. TIP: Hand-washing should be a part of genital hygiene. Always wash hands after using the toilet, and teach it to your kids to become part of their everyday routine.

Women: The inside of the vagina rarely needs cleaning with the use of soap. It has a natural balance of substances that can become disturbed by washing, causing any bacteria to enter and potential infection. Stick to the external part of the vagina, the labia, which should need cleaning using a mild soap and water. The area should also be cleaned following sexual intercourse, and washing should be done using a front to back motion to avoid bacteria around the anus from coming into contact with the February 2015 | 55

Could Aspartame be poisoning you?

E

ver gone to the doctor with real, physical symptoms, but he/she can’t find the cause? Focus on your consumption of so-called ‘sugar-free’ foods for a moment, especially if you are dieting and use sweeteners. You may be suffering from Aspartame poisoning. Aspartame, also known as the ‘sweet poison’, is an artificial sweetener composed of 10% Methanol, 40% Aspartic Acid, and 50% Phenylalanine –Piles of studies have been completed that show these toxic chemicals togethercause for over 95 serious health problems including as cancer, leukemia, headaches, seizures, fibromyalgia, and epilepsy – just to name a few. Aspartame dissolves into any solution and can therefore travel throughout the body and deposit within any tissue. The body digests aspartame unlike saccharin, which does not break down within humans. According to American M.D. Dr. Lendon Smith, there is an enormous population suffering from side effects associated with Aspartame, yet have no idea why drugs, supplements and herbs don’t relieve their symptoms. Then, there are users who don’t ‘appear’ to suffer immediate reactions at all. Aspartame poisoning is commonly misdiagnosed because its symptoms imitate those of several diseases, and has also been linked to depression and fatigue. It is also typical that aspartame symptoms cannot be detected in ordinary lab tests or through on x-rays. Any disorders and diseases, coupled with the consumption of foods containing Aspartame, may actually be a toxic and result in Aspartame poisoning. Always read the labels on whatever you buy, and avoid anything that contains the word ‘artificial flavoring’, 56 | February 2015

Common symptoms of Aspartame poisoning include: • headaches and dizziness • blurred or decreased vision • severe PMS • memory loss • insomnia • brain-fog • rapid heart-rates • depression and irritability • skin rash • intestinal discomfort • chronic fatigue • hunger pangs You may be suffering from slow Aspartame poisoning if you consume a lot of these foods: • diet sodas • diet sweeteners • ‘sugar-free’ anything • anything with artificial flavoring • chewing -gum • flavored waters • cooking sauces • health-bars • muesli and cereals • flavored yogurts TIP: Safe alternatives to Aspartame: • Molasses • Stevia extracts • Agave nectar • Honey • Extracted fructose

•If you experience a burning sensation, puffy eyes, eyelid swelling or sensitivity to light, do not rub your eyes. Instead, take contact lenses out and wash your face and hand. •Protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet rays by wearing sunglasses that block 100% of both UVA and UVB rays. •Smokers are more likely to develop cataracts, uveitis, macular degeneration, and eye diseases that can lead to blindness in the long run. So quit smoking!

Each eye contains arund one million cells, and they are mostly sensitive to the light. Also, the color of the eye can vary according to the lighting conditions. Having a well-balanced diet can help maintain good eye health. How to Maintain Good Eye Health

Did You Know?

Seeing takes a big part of our daily lives, that it requires nearly half of the brain to get involved. Every minute you blink approximately 12 times. Anyone can have blue or green eyes as long as the recessive genes dominate, even if the previous generations did have colored eyes.

Gazing at the computer monitor for too long can trigger blurry vision, dry eyes, headaches, eyestrain, eye irritation, and trouble focusing at distance. To protect your eyes, make sure your glasses or contact lens are adequate for computer use, and position the computer so that your eyes are on the same level of the top of the monitor and 30 cm away. Look away from the screen every 20 minutes, and adjust the brightness, contrast, and font size of the text according to your preference. February 2015 | 57

Family Medicine

I have many open sores and pimples near my vagina. What could it be? Doctor’s Answer:

Genital herpes is more common in women than men, and is caused by Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV). There are two types. Genital herpes is mostly caused by HSV oral to genital contact. These infections can cause pain without a rash, or blisters that burst and form ulcers or what you are describing as open sores. It can be transmitted even without a rash.

Dr. Richard Tholen Plastic Surgery

How do I make my pale skin darker? Doctor’s Answer:

Spray tan is the only way to get darker skin, but if you are pale, then you may burn rather than tan, so you too would be best off getting a spray tan and using a high SPF sunblock at the beach. If you have normal pigmentation and tan easily, then of course this is one way to darken your skin color, but only by increasing your risk of wrinkles and skin cancers.

Dr. Linda Callaghan Geriatric Psychaitry

What can cause cold, smelly feet while wearing socks and shoes?

Please tell me if anti-aging BB cream can be bad for young skin?

Doctor’s Answer:

Doctor’s Answer:

Most foot odor problems are related to moisture issues, which cause bacteria to flourish. In addition to wearing clean socks daily, rotate shoes to allow drying time, powder feet and shoes and dry between toes carefully. If problems persist, a podiatrist can prescribe dying agents. Also in certain instances, antibiotics may reduce bacteria.

58 | February 2015

No, it is important to take care of your skin as early as you can. You don’t necessarily have to use anti-aging cream, but you need to avoid over-exposure to sunlight, smoke, or take drugs that are damaging your skin. You need to keep your skin clean, eat healthy, and sleep 7 hours at night. You can also keep your skin hydrated by drinking lots of water.

5

Dr. J. Lawrence Dohan Dermatology

Why do I get red bumps on my legs after shaving? How do I treat this? Doctor’s Answer:

Irritation of hairs is worse if you press hard or go over the same area too many times. Shave very gently. Change the blade frequently. Use shaving cream. The longer you go between shaves the harder it is, so you may wish to shave more frequently. But spend less time at each shave. You may also consider chemical or electric shaves. Laser can be tried to reduce the number of hairs.

7

Dr. Ilona Gravers Clinical Psychology

How do I manage anxiety? Doctor’s Answer:

There are a number of behavioral techniques to include deep breathing, progress muscle relaxation, and guided imagery. There are a lot of self-help books that show how to practice these techniques. The key is to practice them 20 minutes every day so they become a habit you can easily employ when anxious.

How to dress casual and comfortable for work? Expert’s Answer:

Pants, shirt, and jacket… you can’t really go wrong with this combination. You could make this outfit as casual or smart as you like. It looks dressier and more professional when you tuck your top into your pants. Want a bit more edge? Add a funky necklace or play with asymmetrical elements in your outfit. Scarf adds more professionalism as well as color to the outfit. A dress can be a good casual option. Choose a lose fitting dress in a stretchable fabric for extra comfort. The traditional yet effective push-up: Lie face down on the floor. Move into the plank position – place hands on the floor, where shoulderwidth is equally apart. Stabilize your body and weight between your toes and fingers. It is crucially important that you keep a straight back at all times. Once ready, slowly bow your elbows such that your chest descends to the floor, and then get back to the plank position, with a controlled push of the floor. Make sure to inhale as you get down and exhale as you push your way up.

The dumbbell lifting that wanted to be a bench press: Lie down on your back (ideally on a bench or a step) and hold a dumbbell in each of your hands. Raise your arms to the ceiling, keeping them at shoulder width. Make sure you never bend your back or your elbows. Once all set, slowly bow your elbows to the bench level. This means that your elbows are pointing side-ways, perpendicularly to the rest of your body. Then push the dumbbells back up to your initial position, with a control lift to the ceiling. You should be inhaling going down and exhaling lifting up.

If you are interested in other types of exercising, I won’t blame you. But you have to realize that every move is bound to stretch the ligaments and tissues that form the breast. You should also know that these distortions are irreversible. Thus, whatever exercise you engage in, you should make sure you get enough support.

3. The band should suit your size. Slide a finger under the band that kinks both breasts. You should not be able to pull it more than one inch from your chest. If so, pick a smaller size. 4. The side panel must be adequate. Reach your arms above your head. If the band creeps, it is too big. If so, pick a smaller size.

Indeed, an appropriate sports bras can cut the breast movements by 53% for an A cup to 59% for a D cup. Notice that I did not use the word “good” but “appropriate” because sports bras should be as personal as a medical treatment. What works for someone else may not work for you, or even worse, may have the counter-productive effect of damaging the breast. Now, you should also know that support comes from four strategic parts of the bra: the strap, the cup, the band, and the side panels. 1. The strap tests adjustability. Hold the top of one strap and the center of the corresponding cup, then pull. The less stretchy the front straps, the more motion control they'll provide. 2. The cup should always hold the whole breast. There should never be any spillage. If it does, choose the next larger cup size. This is the number one mistake that women make!

Now that you found your fitness best friend, here is how to take good care of it, so that your relationship lasts as long as possible. 1. Wash in cold water 2. Use only mild detergents 3. Avoid softeners and bleach 4. Dry flat (if you must tumble dry, use the cold cycle only, since it is the heat that breaks the spandex down) With these tips, a quality sports bra should have a lifetime of 15 months of regular use. However, you should make sure to replace it as soon as it shows signs of aging. The rule of thumb is: if the ends of the spandex fibers begin to show or if the fabric no longer springs back into its original shape when pulled, the support is compromised. But remember, being feminine is an attitude before anything else (and this is not sold with the bra). February 2015 | 61

Stomach Crunch Myth: The Right Way to Flatten Your Stomach BY: SAMIRA KHALIL

Myths: • Spot reduction: This myth states that if you do hundreds or thousands of sit-ups or crunches, you will get a defined midsection. • Exercise only: People always think that exercising only is imperative for losing belly fat. • Carbohydrates kill abs: no, carbs is not your enemy. Carbohydrates like whole grains are essential for your body as long as you eat in adequate quantities, to support your body with required fuel. • Males tend to have the same time getting a six-pack as females: Sadly though, women in general need a higher level of body fat to function properly. So women should fight harder to get those six packs. • Certain foods blast belly fat: Food just doesn’t discriminate by body part. Good foods are good for your whole body, not just your abs. • Fast abs repetition is important: speedy repetitions will make you lie on the momentum and will decrease the focus on your core muscles to work in isolation.

Facts to Flatten Your Stomach: • Replace the calorie dense foods like junk food, chocolates, sodas, and chips with nutrient dense foods like whole grains, lean proteins, and fresh fruits and veggies. • Treat your abs as any other muscle in your body. Focus and work it at least three times a week. • Work your whole body and increase the intensity of your training gradually. • Cut your big meals into smaller and lighter ones. • Cut your salt intake to 1500 mg a day and increase your water intake. • Fat accumulates around our midsection due to stress. Either breathe several times to decrease stress, or have a long walk everyday befor or after work. • Add resistance to you abs workout for example: if you are performing crunches and you are too comfortable doing them, raise your legs off the floor to make it more challenging.

In conclusion, abs exercises alone won’t get you a flat stomach. A good diet accompanied with a good conditioning program are the best strategy to reduce your whole body fat percentage including your midsection. 62 | February 2015

De-Stress to Discourage Cravings

I

BY: Noura Hassaballa

t’s all in your head! There is a common misconception among many people that food cravings are related to body needs. In reality, eating chips is not an indicator of salt restrain and eating a scoop of vanilla ice cream also doesn’t imply lack of calcium. The sad thing is that it’s all psychological. Most of the time you crave foods high in sugar and fats, just to fulfill a desire or emotional needs.

The Facts About Food Cravings

According to Christine Gerbstadt, MD, RD, and ADA spokeswoman, "sweet is the first taste humans prefer from birth." Carbohydrates stimulate the release of the feel-good brain chemical serotonin. Sugar is a carbohydrate, but carbohydrates come in other forms, too, such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Many women’s cravings come from stress or a need for comfort, safety, or love. They tend to eat more of the sugary treats like chocolate, cupcakes, cookies, or even table sugar. Because women associate high-fat foods with house chores and cleanup, they tend to want hassle-free snacks. On the other hand, men are more likely to crave pizza, pasta, burgers, or soups because savory foods give them a feeling of comfort and safety; it reminds them of attention from their mothers.

What Causes Food Cravings?

It’s mainly due to dehydration. When there is a deficiency in the body’s water supply, the body sends signals of thirst, which is most likely translated as hunger. The first thing you want to do when you get a craving is to go grab a glass of water.

Skipping Meals

Increasing the intervals between meals can lead you to make unhealthy choices, which is also called ‘impulsive eating’, where you don’t think before you eat. However, eating lots of simple sugars without combing them with proteins or healthy fats can quickly curb hunger and give you a quick energy boost, but they almost as quickly leave you starved again. Eating every 2-3 hours can stabalize blood sugar and limit irrational food choices.

Going Cold Turkey

Cutting out the food you crave all at once may set you up for a relapse. You will hit hard and start indulging without even thinking. Instead, reward yourself with the foods you crave from time to time. Change your lifestyle, one step at a time. Get the taste of what you crave but in small quantities; this way you have satisfied your desire while being conscious of your eating habits.

Stress & Anxiety

Researchers from University of California at San Francisco put rats in a high-stress environment and discovered two key points: the stressed-out rats preferred to eat sugar and fat, and when they did, their brains produced less of the stress-related hormones. If you are feeling stressed or in a bad mood, go for a salmon sandwich on a whole-grain toast. Omega 3 Fatty acid will enhance your mood. If you don’t feel like eating fish, have a piece of dark chocolate. The more you consume cocoa, the higher the rate of antioxidants and flavonoids; an element responsible for releasing serotonin (happy hormone) in the brain, which makes you stress-free.

Love & Relationships

It’s All About Love

The Changing Face of Valentine’s Day

S

o Valentine’s Day is meant to be all about love – But you understand that love is NOT just for couples, right?! Who said that this day should be restricted only to romance and the love of a partner?

No other day can conjure such powerful imagery of chocolate, flowers, romance, and love the way Valentine’s Day can. Despite the history around it, it is a commercially driven day that provokes strongly divided reactions to the blindingly red display of hearts and balloons and flowers all over the place, and starryeyed romance implied on TV and in the shops. For those in stable, loving relationships, the day offers a wonderful opportunity to express or reaffirm their love. But for those who are recently bereaved, divorced, unhappy, or single, this is a day that can trigger feelings of overwhelming loneliness and grief. Without intending to wreck this anticipated “feel-good” day, it’s only fair to suggest that we can all benefit from an expression of love, particularly on a day that is internationally and historically acknowledged as truly a day for love. Not just romantic love between couples (and the blatant exchange of teddy bears and chocolate), but love in all of its forms – the love of friendship, family,

pets, and humanity. Many people who find themselves alone on this day, caught up with past hurts, grief, and feelings of inadequacy. Some even choose to avoid the day by staying at home, just to avoid the onslaught of Valentine’s overbearing red streets – and of course there are definitely those that dread it even if they are in a relationship, because of the gift-bearing implications and expectations to get out of their way. While we are bombarded with images of love-struck happy couples, it is important that we remember that our identity is not defined by our relationship status. A person’s worth comes from who they are, not who they are with. Valentine’s Day offers us a unique opportunity to undertake a new perspective on how we choose to celebrate love, so take initiative and create new traditions. Invite your single friends (or couples – no awkwardness, okay?) over for dinner, spend a night out with the family, take cookies to your neighbor who is always there for you, or dig into a tub of ice-cream with a girlfriend… you get the picture. As with anything in life, being prepared for a challenging situation can make all the difference in the world. Don’t let another Valentine’s Day sneak up on you and leave you feeling depressed or lonely. Take control and plan how you want to spend it – because there’s really no avoiding it. Plan how you can create a day that actually makes you feel good. While the traditional approach with flowers and cards works well, a display of love towards children, parents, or friends can be equally rewarding. What about a perspective change? What if we were to adopt the idea that Valentine’s Day is not just for couples, but for everybody? While your friends and colleagues might be buying flowers for their partners, consider the people in your world that you love, and that love you back. Something special for your mom or dad, for example. A sister, or a brother. Perhaps your daughter would appreciate flowers as much as any lover would. Maybe spending the evening with your son watching a movie would be one way to express your particular brand of love. Random acts of kindness can bring a surprisingly wonderful sense of well-being. For those who struggle with this day, it might be helpful to spend time with friends or family - people with whom you have already established positive, loving relationships. It should be, more than anything really, a time to focus on what you have, rather than on what you feel you’re missing.

A Cloak of Thorns BY: NOHA MAHER

Sitting by myself on a side way aching, For almost all people thought I was faking, It's a scratch they said and it will surely pass, What they didn't see in it was a broken glass. A shadow came along stood there by my side, I didn't know then whether I should stay or hide. He pulled out the glass and threw it all away, Then he moved along continued on his way, Wanting to thank him I followed him to yell, But I was stunned by a site coming from hell. A trail of bloody footsteps was what he left behind, To my at most amazement he didn't seem to mind, For in a cloak of thorns he was tightly wrapped, In that hurtful cover I guessed that he was trapped. He then looked at me his eyes touching my soul, Such kindness they held the most beautiful of all, Approaching him I asked why do you walk in pain, Every wounding move what's in that to gain? That's from trusting unworthy friends and strangers, A lot of backstabs betrayals aches and dangers, So I wear my pains no matter how they char, They scare away people making them stand so far. Oh poor soul that I want to hold so near, Don't startle now from me you'd have no fear, Let me hold you give you the kindness you need, I know it will hurt but for you I am prepared to bleed. Let it flow together our mixed running blood, Irrigate that loveless desert with alive throbbing flood, And instead of thorns roses shall surely sprout, What love is capable of is true I have no doubt. Together we will heal, together we shall stand, So please let me in, just give me your open hand. February 2015 | 79

Don’t Panic! What to Do When Kids Fall in Love

ou’ve changed their diapers and you’ve fed them and cleaned up their vomit and screamed at them and grounded them and helped them with their homework. It’s no surprise that you’ll be tempted to either scream or laugh – or panic! – when you discover your son or daughter has developed feelings for someone. You’re probably at a loss as to how to respond to such a thing, and as parents, we tend to get anxious, possibly overprotective, and in a complete emotional disarray as to how to deal with the situation. The only rule is this: Do. Not. Panic. Consider these tips to help guide you and your kids through the perils and joys of young love.

Tips for all parents:

• Take your child’s feelings seriously. You may not think it’s a big deal for a kid in primary school to fall in love, but it’s a huge deal to him or her. Treat it with the same seriousness as your child does. • Be your child’s friend, so as to not scare them away. Befriend them, listen to them, and do not attack or belittle them or their feelings in any way. Let them share their feelings and thoughts with you so you know what’s going on at all times and to avoid them doing anything remotely crazy behind your back. Remember, you want your kids to talk to you, not avoid you. • Be careful not to overreact (and make it a bigger deal than it is) or under react (by dismissing it). Ask your child questions, such as, “What do you like about this person?” “How does this person make you feel?” • Talk about appropriate ways to express love and care for someone. Society, TV, and social media tend to be sex-obsessed; manifesting itself into everyday life as if it were the norm and our kids can easily imitate what they see. Focus on what a relationship really means, and important things such as getting to know someone, or revealing oneself to them. • Affirm the joy of falling in love—even if your own love life hasn’t always been easy. There’s no need to kill your child’s optimism or traumatize them with your own experiences. Advice for parents with toddlers to children aged 9: • Young children often play with a variety of kids. If your child plays with someone of the opposite sex, don’t start calling their relationship “boyfriend and girlfriend.” Young children need to focus on friendships, not on dating. • Between the ages 3 and 5, young children begin to become aware of their sexuality. They often ask questions about their bodies—and other people’s bodies. Don’t tell them they’re naughty or too young. You should answer their questions correctly and calmly. • If your child plays with his or her genitals, know that it’s normal curiosity and it’s healthy and natural. But be sure to teach your child that sexual play and nudity are not acceptable in public or as ways to play with their friends. Make sure that they understand that their private parts are ‘private’. • Children between the ages 6 and 9 sometimes develop a crush on a classmate or a teacher, which is fine as long as your child doesn’t start acting inappropriately. (Such as stalking the person or not being able to do anything but think about the person.) • Regarding puberty, the average age for girls to go through it now at age 10. (That means some girls are

getting their first menstrual cycles at age 8 or 9). Talk to your child about these changes when they start to happen. Advice for parents with children ages 10–15: • Young teenagers are quick to pick up that sexuality can be a taboo subject. Be open about the topic – remember, you want them to be able to talk to you about anything. Talk about dating and sexuality correctly, and be sure to focus on the relationship aspects. Talk about your values about sexuality and why you have the values that you do. • Encourage your child to go out in groups rather than with individuals. A one-on-one outing or ‘date’ at a young age can be scary and overwhelming. Going out in groups though (where a group of kids all go to the movies together or out to eat) often helps young people feel more comfortable and less stressed about what “others expect them to do.”

TIP:

Find out if your child’s school has a proper sex-education program. If not, you might have to take on this task yourself, and cover everything from puberty to intercourse to childbearing and contraception. There are multiple resources you can consult for this including books, blogs, and videos. It is for your child’s own good to understand everything about this topic. It is as much a part of their lives as is food and breathing, and you cant avoid it. Advice for parents with children ages 16–18: • By this age, teenagers can get into very serious relationships. If this happens, talk about your values and what your hopes are for your teenager. Discuss how a dating relationship can sometimes become so intense that teens forget about their friends and activities. Encourage your teens to develop a balance and not move so quickly. • Find ways to get to know the teenager your teen likes. Invite the person over for pizza or ice cream. Create a fun way to spend some time together to show your teenager that you’re interested in who he or she wants to be with. • Periodically ask your teenager about dating. Be interested—but not overly nosy. Explain that you understand that your teenager may want to keep some things private but that you’re always willing to listen to what your teenager has to say. MEET EMAN EL-HAWARY: RENOWNED EGYPTIAN PHOTOGRAPHER

H

er name is Eman EL-Hawary, or simply “Emma”. While originally an Applied Arts graduate, throughout the past 15 years, Emma has become recognized as a print-shop expert, a graphic designer, a web designer, a crafts and giftwrapping entrepreneur with her own shop, a photographer, and a fashion stylist. She is also the proud mother of 2 kids.

Like many photographers, Emma’s early experimentation with photography goes back as far as her days in collage. While photography was a passion she had always wanted to nourish, her breakthrough came when she moved to Dubai, where she lived and studied photography for three years at one of Dubai’s most prestigious photography institutes. Officially a photographer since 2008, Emma became certified as a pro since 2010. Emma tells us about the trials and tribulations of being a female photographer in Egypt – it is not easy, particularly in oriental societies and also in a profession that is dominated by men. The physical effort, the attire red lines, the places she has to shoot at, and the positions she has to assume while on the job are but a few of the challenges she faces on the job. But she understands that each profession comes with its challenges and opportunities. A passionate person, she always sees the opportunity amidst the challenges - female touch in a male-dominated profession always makes the difference. It is a phenomenon that is prominent in her work, and her clients realize that they don’t just get a simple “photo shot” but rather “a moment captured”.

Emma depends mainly on her artistic vision and imagination to create the perfect impressive photo – especially when it come to fashion photography. The themes she choose or the compositions she create are materialized through mixing different elements, colors and adding fitting accessories to fill in the frame. To establish her own fingerprint in the field, she always asks herself - How can you describe your style? And what makes you unique than other photographers? Adaptation is her key word. In her opinion, a successful photographer should be able to live each job he/she takes and adjust his/her style accordingly. One day, she is an easygoing woman that entertains the kids to create an artful cadre. The next day, she could be stepping into a CEO’s office in high heels and a formal suit to capture the company’s board members’ group

photo. She could be shooting tomatoes and green beans in a plantation in the suburbs of Mansoura in the morning, then quickly get out of her jeans and slacks and into an evening gown for a pre-wedding session in the evening. With regard to her camera, Emma is armed with a full frame 5D Mark 3 camera equipped with variable lenses depending on the job / session. The number of lighting strobes and strobe accessories would also vary. Apart from documentaries and news photography, almost every known photographer would also have to use image-editing software on his or her work. It is essential in order to enhance features and effects in the photo. When she must, Emma uses mainly Photoshop when editing her work. Emma recalls one of the greatest moments in her career, where she

was once was supposed to shoot a bank’s board members, and the only available room for shooting was a large meeting room. The meeting room was equipped with a huge table that almost swallowed all the space available. It was very heavy and almost unremovable and she was reduced standing in front of 8 to 12 senior businessmen from different nationalities, basically frozen in her place. She had to find a quick solution – the only way was to have them stand at one side the table where she had to step over the table and literal jump her way through to get the job done. Emma loves to see people smiling into her lens … she loves to see them happy and comfortable spending time in the studio. When she takes photos, she feels as if she is painting a masterpiece – pausing and living inside the moment that she am capturing.

When you hear his song Budapest, you picture a 50-year-old man with brown hair and classic look from the 20s. In reality, Ezra is only 21 years old singer-songwriter, who went to a musical college in Bristol, and whose song is among the top 1o in most European countries, and in Egypt. From the giddy skiffle of Cassy O’ to the sweet strum of Barcelona and rocky grit of Did You Hear the Rain? Ezra’s debut has charm to spare.

Aquarius January 20 – February 18

Life: You should pay special attention to the relationships within your family this month. It is likely that you have been observing some negative tendencies for a while, the result of which may be an end of relationships between people close to you. You have the ability to stop it and no matter how it sounds, . However, don’t take sides, Let the heart lead you – not the mind. Love: You will finally be capable of reaching absolute harmony with your lover and will come to a set of conceptual resolutions that will fully satisfy you both. If you are alone, then be confident that you will meet your second half in February. Career: A revelation that will occur during the first ten-day period will allow the Aquarius to optimize their resources and raise the results of their work. Diplomacy will become your main weapon. Do not doubt yourself and your efforts or abilities. Fashion Tip: You love expressing yourself through fashion and are a true trendsetter. By mixing pieces from different designers you create fresh looks of your own.

Pisces This is a great time to test yourself and also prove to others what you are worth. Do not worry if something will go astray due to some external influences. Everything will happen the way it should and in the end you will certainly reach your goals. 90 | February 2015

Aries Try to be as unbiased as possible, but do not forget that friendship may be above fairness in some cases. Never forget that life may sometimes be too unpredictable and the simplest decision may not always be the correct one. Taurus You do not have to be afraid of a possibly life-defining choice suddenly arising before you. It may define your life, in part, but the thing is that not a single option will be fully negative. Choose what feels more right to your heart. Gemini Your loved-one will not be in their best mood, so you should not discuss any important topics with them. Be patient and do not try to resolve problems with arguments. Use your charisma. Cancer Your relationships will be harmonious. But pay special attention to your close friends. It is likely that this month all of you will have to overcome some challenges, the results of which will define your future together. Leo Do not rush in head first. Look at the situation, weigh the pros and cons. Maybe you are commanded by a stereotypical mindset? Think about this, and then make the final decisions.

Virgo Believe in yourself and do not give up, no matter what. It is likely that you have lost real opportunities in the past, most likely because of your lack of decisiveness. You cannot let that happen now. Do not turn away, even in the moments of greatest doubts. Libra Be careful with your health, do not let stress overpower you. Work as much as you can, but do not step over the line after which you come home and fall on the bed lifeless. Your health is your priority. Scorpio Careful what you say and to whom – you may very well accidentally offend your best friend. Just put yourself into another person’s shoes. Sagittarius You should not take everything close to heart and act on a hot head. Maybe you are guilty in what is happening, and some of your actions in the past have brought a loss of trust in you. In either case, right now is the prime time to change these perceptions. Capricorn Your biggest task right now is to maintain what you have, not to multiply it. Going into open battle would be a serious mistake, whereas planning your strength and to support yourself – that is the correct decision.
