Caged As we grow older, our happiness keeps reforming with every stage we go through. That slide in the park has turned into a memory; and you can barely recall the sound of applause you got at 4th grade. That new car you once begged your parents to get has turned into an old heavy burden in today’s traffic; and you now dismiss the text that once gave you butterflies. What once got you jumping up and down, now barely put a smile on your face. Whilst it’s normal for one’s priorities to change, not being able to let go of how wwthing used to be isn’t so. I find myself stuck sometimes. It’s like with every phase in my life, part of me stays chained to the previous one; it’s like I am missing out on the past! Sometimes I feel that no matter what joys come my way, things will feel a bit dimmer than before. My preconceived definition of happiness that I’ve been raised to cherish hinders me from enjoying the new flavors of happiness. Escape! Is it the solution? Now that’s a huge meaningful word right there. Don’t we all want to escape somehow? And no, I don’t mean the “Prison Break” kind of escape; I am talking about wanting to escape the feeling of being attached to something that no longer exists. You wake up everyday, dress up, go to work, talk to people, go out with friends. You travel, celebrate happy occasions, cry, laugh, love; you’re as free as you could possibly be, yet no matter what you do, you feel as if you’re stuck; simply caged…And what an awful feeling it is. So whether you choose to live this illusion of escape or decide to move on, you should be reminded that we all have limited predefined time at this fast-paced life we live in. And it’s up to me, as it’s up to you to make the most out of it. I believe it’s time to widen our perspective and embrace the savors of life. No matter where you are, and no matter what you do, be HAPPY! And whether where you at right now matches your idea of happiness or not, again, be happy. Just roll with the punches, let go of the past, and enjoy the present as it is.

Cracking the Dress Code BY: MAHA ABDEL-LATIF

P

icture this: It’s Thursday morning, you have a meeting with your boss in an hour, your cousin’s outdoor engagement party the next morning, and, last but not least, your best friend’s wedding the following evening! Oh, and did I mention, you’re a bridesmaid at that wedding? Now, take a deep breath. We’ve all been through our share of hectic schedules. But we can all agree that being confident and comfortable in how you look is half the battle. And when you have such a diverse set of occasions on your plate, it’s a challenge finding just the right look to suit each individual setting. With this guide, you’ll be able to crack three trickiest dress codes!

Formal Look: It’s 8 am and you’re getting ready for your big meeting. You’ve narrowed down the options to your new orange blazer and white trousers or a black pencil skirt and dark blue top. Which do you choose? Here’s a hint: when putting together an outfit for an important work event, a general rule of thumb is to avoid bright, distracting colors. Shunning away from choices like neon blazers and opting for more subtle (and, if possible, neutral) looks for the office tend to add to the overall impression of being a self-established, mature woman. So put on that pencil skirt and blue top and get ready to impress!

Outdoor Engagement/Wedding: Now, you’re back at home basking in the glory of your fruitful meeting and getting your outfit ready for your cousin’s engagement party she’s having at an outdoor venue. The good news here is an outdoor event allows for a slightly more laid-back spin on the classic formal outfit. Think formal, but comfortable. Remember, you’ll be in an open-air venue, which means a little more exposure to the warm Cairo sun than you’re not typically used to at engagements and weddings. For a morning open-air engagement, stick to light, flowing fabrics that allow a lot of room for movement. Think about which colors look best in natural lighting and what kind of fit would make you the most comfortable in the warmer air. And of course, with less pressure for formality than that of a wedding, here is your chance to have fun and be creative. A knee-length dress, cinched slightly at the waist, in a soft, green pastel is my choice for this kind of occasion.

dolce & gabbana Jane Norman

Bridesmaids: Fast-forward to later that evening and you’re getting ready for none other than your best friend’s big day! As a bridesmaid, many eyes will be on you throughout the night and you want to make sure you are feeling put-together, poised, and picturesque. If (and that’s a big “if ”) the bride gives you the freedom to pick out your own dress, be sure to follow two key rules: • Avoid bright colors or bold prints, as they tend not to photograph well in artificial lighting. • Wear something that is complimentary to the other bridesmaids’ dresses and the overall theme of the wedding. The tradition of bridesmaids sticking to pastel colors is dead and gone. Turn heads in a royal blue gown or try a form-fitting champagne dress with a subtle sparkle for the big day. The sky’s is the..well cross that, the BRIDE’S opinion is the limit!

Airbrush Makeup BY: EMAN ARAFA

T

hough not a new technology, Airbrush makeup is once again in the limelight due to the advent of evolving digital media and HD Television. Airbrush has two main benefits that make it artists’ favorite technique.

The first and great advantage is providing full coverage with sheer texture. It offers high opacity that’s dispersed as sheerly and evenly as possible. The result is perfect looking skin achieved with a minimum amount of product. The second main benefit is the refined pattern it offers. The spray dot pattern the airbrush puts down on the 36 | September 2014

skin registers less on camera than the patterns and trace lines that brushes and sponges leave behind. This is especially noticeable on HD close up or high-resolution digital photo. Add to all these advantages, the speed of application, longevity (it stays on up to 16 hours) and durability of the makeup. It truly gives a flawless natural finish as you can still see through it the natural skin color. Some other factors play a role as well to achieve best results. One of which is the right choice of product and the maintenance of the airbrush gun by thoroughly cleansing after use. Airbrush makeup is also highly hygienic. The fact that its waterproof and does not transfer onto clothing makes it a perfect choice for bridal makeup.

All you Need to Know about the Top Hair removal Techniques

A

Hair removal is one of the beauty routines that every woman has to go through whether she likes it or not. Some hair removal techniques are more painful than the others, yet more effective, other techniques take less time, but might not give you the result that you want. Moreover, methods’ effectiveness varies from one woman to the other depending on hair growth, skin sensitivity, and the frequency of its removal. In this article, we’re going to discuss the top hair removal techniques, to help you out in deciding.

COLD WAX STRIPS: Cold waxing is considered by many to be the easiest and most convenient way for hair removal. Perhaps what makes it so popular is that it’s fast and doesn’t require much effort, unlike hot wax for instance, that requires preheating, and if applied wrong might actually cause burns and bruises. Cold strips are also very handy for various body parts, and can clean out a large area of hair all at once. In addition, according to users testimonies, cold wax strips can reach and pull 38 | September 2014

out very short hairs, and give results that last for as long as a whole month! So even though it could be a bit painful, it’s definitely worth it. Applying method: • Make sure that your skin is fairly dry and moisturefree before applying. Try to exfoliate (remove dead skin) before applying wax. • Rub the strip for few seconds before applying. • Remove the cover then place the strip on the area you want and make sure it’s appropriately and evenly placed. • Remove the strip fast in the opposite direction of hair growth.

SUGARING: Sugaring is the oldest trick in the book. Women have been using this method for ages, whether it’s their own homemade recipes, or those available in the market. The main advantage of using sugaring is that it removes the hair from roots that’s why it’s considered effective as well, which usually makes hair grows back slower and softer. However, sugaring could be really hard to control, painful and could turn really messy

Sponsored by

if not used right, especially when done at home. Also, unlike cold wax stripes, it’s very hard to pull out short hair using sugaring. Tips: • Sugaring is more effective on long hair. • When done at home, a mixture of sugar, water and lemon juice is heated to boiling point. So make sure you know what you’re doing before preparing. • Wait till it’s bearable warm before applying it.

DEPILATORY CREAMS: Depilatory creams have been around for years now, and considered to be effective and less painful than other techniques, as it doesn’t remove hair from the roots. This technique works on dissolving the hair on skin surface using chemicals. The combinations used usually have a distinctive smell; so don’t be surprised, it’s just a part of its formula. Tips: • Make sure you choose a trustworthy brand, preferably recommended by your dermatologist. • Read the instructions listed on the bottle. • It’s always advisable to try it on a small part of your body, because skins react differently to all sorts of chemicals. So test it to avoid any allergic reactions. • Beware not to leave the cream on your skin more than the time instructed, or it may lead to irritation. • Don’t apply body depilatory creams on your face, because they usually contain stronger concentration of chemicals.

SHAVING: Well if you’re in a hurry and looking for a fast way to get the job done, then definitely shaving is your go-to technique. Although shaving is the fastest technique for hair removal, yet it doesn’t guarantee the best outcome. If your skin not moisturized right, shaving might cause serious cuts that would not only be painful, but might attract some unwanted stares from people. Further more, hair usually grows fast after shaving, and might only last for days, which means

that you’ll have to shave on regular bases making your hair particles darker and heavier. Tips: • Make sure you apply a shaving cream (some use shower gel) before shaving, and reapply whenever necessary. • It’s also important that you choose a good quality razor, whether electric or not, don’t go for cheap choices. • If you have sensitive skin, experts recommend that you go for a light three-blade razor to avoid burn feeling and cuts. • Don’t stick to one type of razor; if it’s not working for you try different brand.

ELECTROLYSIS: It’s a technique that involves applying an electric current on hair follicles through thin wire/needle that would destroy it through using chemical or by heat, and it could also be used on face as well as other body parts. Unlike the previously stated methods, electrolysis is the only permanent method of hair removal, but you would have to go for several sessions. Although it’s said to be very effective, it’s much more expensive and time consuming than other methods, as each hair follicle is destroyed individually. Also, depending on your tolerance level, it might be a bit painful. And make sure you pick a good doctor to avoid any unfortunate incidents.

LASER: Laser is relatively similar to electrolysis, in that it targets the hair follicles, but instead of applying an electric current, a laser beam of light is used instead. Laser is becoming very popular nowadays in Egypt with more cosmetic centers offering it, and women finding it more convenient than other traditional methods. Laser however is mistakenly considered to prevent unwanted hair growth permanently, but it rather slows its growth over time and with several pricy sessions. And again, just like electrolysis, with such techniques it’s essential to choose a trustworthy doctor. September 2014 | 39

The Ultimate Anti-aging Techniques

Botox and Fillers BY: Dr. GEORGE GERGES

A

40 | September 2014

ging is difficult in a culture that celebrates youth. Age spots, wrinkles, fine lines and black hallows in your face where they didn’t exist before, are all signs of getting older. To some people it is hard and depressing to look in the mirror at the face you have known all your life and see someone different. However, nowadays such facial changes are not directly related to the age as there are many external factors and life patterns that contribute to such signs.

How do you make them vanish? Botox: It is a substance that is used to block the chemical responsible for starting muscle contraction in our body, acetylcholine, and therefore prevent the appearance of wrinkles during facial expressions in areas such as the forehead, and between the eyebrows and the crow feet, along the outer end of the eyes. Botox simply does this by keeping your body from telling your muscle to contract. It may also be used to slightly elevate the outer end of the eyebrows so to elevate any skin drooping in the upper eyelid that can be irritating to many and greatly improves the facial look.

Fillers: Fillers are substances used to fill already existing wrinkles and lines despite any facial expressions. There are certain areas in the face that benefit from fillers injection including the nasolibial folds around the nose and mouth, the tear trough depression in the lower eyelid that can also be the cause of the black hallows, which therefore improves a lot after injecting this area. They can also be used for the treatment of fine lines around the eyes and lips. Fillers are also used to augment parts of the face such as the cheeks and lips giving them the appropriate volume to maintain a younger, healthy and most importantly a natural look that should be the goal for both the patient and the doctor.

One of the most factors that strongly affect our skin appearance is smoking. The appearance of wrinkles increases by smoking, both through the biochemical damage it does to cells and repetitive facial expression it requires. Other factors that contribute to aging signs include the frequent prolong exposure to sun, continuous daily stress, lack of antioxidant food and lack of exercise.

“

Nature gives you the face you have at twenty; it is up to you to merit the face you have at fifty.

This is pretty simple and straight forward. All you have to do is mix up a single teaspoon of honey into one glass of whole milk then massage it into your hair from root to tip. Leave it on for 15 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water and shampoo. Then, avoid bees! And you’ll see some amazing results in your hair.

42 | September 2014

Coconut Cream Mask This mask is kind of… sticky, sweet and time consuming to say the least. It’s also worth every minute. Take a chunk of coconut cream (raw coconut comes in a solid form, when warmed up in your palms it turns into an oil) and warm it up in your hands. When it is soft and pliable, massage it into your hair. Slowly and carefully, wrap your hair up into a warm towel and let the mask sit on your hair for one hour. Wash out with a mild shampoo and let your hair dry normally.

34

Strawberry Mask

Take a cup of strawberries (the ones that are just a little too mushy to eat work best), one egg yolk, and 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Mix all of these up until the strawberries look more like juice than chunks. Work into your hair and leave it on for 20 minutes. Rinse and wash with a mild shampoo!

Banana and Almond Mask

MayoNNAISE Mask That’s right ladies, it’s not a myth. Mayo and Avocado really are good for your hair. Here’s what you do: take a full jar of full fat mayonnaise and one half of one very mashed up avocado. Mix well and apply to your hair. Pay very special attention to those roots and then after 20 minutes rinse your hair in COLD water. You will see the difference!

5

That’s right, bananas and almonds are good for your hair. Here’s what you do. Mash up one banana and add about 3 drops of almond oil to your gooey concoction. Mix well and massage into your hair. Let it sit for about 25 minutes, rinse and wash your hair and you’re all done, it’s as easy as that! Wash out with a mild shampoo and let your hair dry normally.

Well ladies, I’ve shown you just about all I can show you for this issue. So, next time you stick that head of yours into your refrigerator think about all the things inside that will make your hair look fabulous

Faces of Egypt

First, we would like to know more about you and your background.

Yossra Shabana

CEO of Tamreeni Where Working Out Has Never Been Easier Fitness is turning into a “national movement” nowadays in Egypt, which is great as people are becoming more and more aware of their health and way more alert to what’s going on with their bodies. However, unfortunately this “national movement” is somehow becoming enclosed to a certain social category, and also often associated with a certain body image. So, you’ll find perfectly fit candidates joining all sorts of activities, classes, groups and gyms just to maintain their fitness, while those who are actually in need of getting fit would end up feeling reluctant to join such groups, and even feel a bit intimidated to show up with their not-soperfect form. In an attempt to lessen the gap between the bodybuilders and the lazybones, Tamreeni has surfaced. Tamreeni is a new online project that enables you to exercise in the simplest ways at the comfort of your home. We had a chat with Tamreeni’s CEO, Yossra Shabana to help us understand the story behind it. 44 | September 2014

I graduated from the American University in Cairo in 2012 with a bachelor degree in Finance. I’ve worked at Google, and then tried asset management for a while, but I wasn’t really satisfied with the corporate life. I’ve always been passionate about fitness, and I’ve been playing football since I was four-year-old, and continued playing up till couple of years ago. I’ve always wanted to do something related to health and fitness, and that’s how I thought of Tamreeni.

Kindly explain to our readers the concept behind Tamreeni. Tamreeni is an online platform that supports Arabicspeakers in the Middle East to have a healthy lifestyle. It provides users with workout tutorials that are fast and simple. No equipment needed, our trainers use things like bottles and chairs, among other objects that you can easily find at home. Tamreeni also focuses on the social element, through which people can motivate each other online and track their progress. You don’t have to pay a lot of money and go all the way to a gym to better your fitness and overall lifestyle, which is the core notion behind Tamreeni. You can use what you got at home with the little time available; all you have to do is to register online.

Whom exactly targeting?

are

you

We target those who want to get in shape but can’t go to the gym or join sports for any sort of reason; whether it’s time, money, lack of confidence, or even laziness. Tamreeni offers an alternative that is simple and convenient. Also, the fact that registration is for free makes it even more reachable to anyone who wants to join, because they simply have nothing to lose.

It’s hard to transform an idea to reality; how DID YOU bring Tamreeni to life? I started through Flat6Labs, a startup accelerator that invests and supports regional entrepreneurs. I’ve graduated from my cycle last May, during which I was able to develop a pilot for Tamreeni in a form of a draft website and videos, so that I could see how people would react to the whole concept. Luckily, people were interacting, giving us positive feedback, and most importantly, they were asking questions, through which I was able to fill in the gaps and have a whole complete model ready for people to use.

Getting in shape requires commitment and willpower, that’s one of the main reasons why people pay for classes; it’s because they simply can’t do it alone. How do you tackle such an issue? Having a support system is definitely important, and that’s why we allow our users to share their comments and experiences on Tamreeni. You could think of it as a social fitness platform, where users could support one another, ask questions and celebrate their accomplishments.

Do you offer diets or only workout routines? Right now our main focus is on providing exercises and adding to our workout programs. Once we establish a

solid followers’ base, we could definitely branch out to cover nutrition as well. Also, we will cover various fitness and health-related subjects on Tamreeni’s blog.

when unattended, EXCERCISING could result in various types of injuries. How do you make it safer for your users? In addition to demonstrating movements, our trainers verbally communicate with the users. If a certain movement is known to be hard, or is commonly done wrong, they would state that clearly in the video and explain how to do it right. We choose highly qualified trainers that are cautious with what they deliver to the users.

Are there any collaborations in the cards for Tamreeni? There are literally endless possibilities, especially with the growing fitness and health awareness in Egypt. So definitely collaborations are coming our way soon. September 2014 | 45

Dr. Andrew Shatz Ophthalmology

I am suffering from dry eyes, and I blink a lot! Could it be bad? Doctor’s Answer:

Dry eyes are caused by decreased production of water, oil or mucus by the tear glands. The irritated eye sends feedback to the tears glands to create more tears, and blinks more frequently in order to push more tears onto the eye surface. If you are this dry you should have an eye doctor evaluate you for the cause of your condition, as well as to start a treatment regimen that can greatly help you.

Can a tummy tuck help a postpregnancy belly? I recently gave birth to twin girls. Right now, I am five months postpartum, but none of the exercises that I am doing are helping get rid of my saggy belly skin. Can tummy tucks actually get rid of all this sagginess?

Tennis elbow. The most common cause of elbow pain when gripping comes from lateral epicondytis or tennis elbow. The pain is on the outside part of the elbow right over the prominent bone than can be easily felt there. Usually goes away on its own but can also take several weeks or even months. Simple stretching can help sometimes, and an injection can help with the pain.

Co-Founder and Stylist-in-Chief, Style for Hire

What’s one way to look slimmer in a dress? Expert’s Answer:

Structured fabrics are key; they help suck you in and hide bulges. Heels always help too.

Doctor’s Answer:

Yes. After pregnancy, particularly after twins, the skin and fascia of the abdomen have often been stretched beyond their ability to shrink back. Exercising the muscles will tighten them but won’t remove the excess skin or separation that may exist between the muscles. A tummy tuck is a reliable way to get rid of the skin and tighten the fascia. See a board certified plastic surgeon for a consult.

Keep your Children’s Hands Clean

M

ost of us often neglect the importance of hand washing and don’t realize how crucial it is; simply put, your hands are the perfect transmitter of germs! Think about, how many people have touched that door knop before you do? How many of them might be having the flu? Or simply how many virus-transmitting flies have landed on it? We’re not saying you should turn into a “neat freak” or anything, but we simply want you to be aware of how a simple act like hand washing would prevent many sleepless nights staying by your sick child.

Given that it’s school season, major health instuitions like As-Salam International Hospital, is putting extra emphasis on the importance of that subject. According to the hospital’s Infection Control Department, when we are healthy, our body can fight many contagious diseases. Keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. Many diseases and conditions are spread by not washing hands with soap and clean running water. Maintaining a healthy and hygiene skin is a vaccination-like method that helps us stay healthy. Furthermore, Schools can be a prime place where kids can pick up germs as they are constantly curious seeking things in all kinds of places. Teaching them the importance of washing their hands will help them stay healthy especially in cold and flu season. It will also give them the freedom to play and roam as they wish, without the threat of infection. When to Wash Hands? 58 | September 2014

After play-time After playing with pets Before and after eating After using the toilet After sneezing

The Right Way for Hand Washing Referring to Mayo Clinic’s tips on that matter, hand washing should include using both, a clean running water and soap. • Start by wetting your hands then lather with soap for 20 seconds on average. Always choose a trusted brand of soap, and don’t get fooled by its package or even smell. Also, remember that not all antibacterial soaps are good for you. • Rub all your hand surfaces not just the palms. Make sure to wipe the back of your hands, your wrist, and your finger tips as well as between the fingers. • Wash out the soap well. • Dry with a disposable towel or an air dryer. • If you’re using a public bathroom, try not to touch anything on your way out.

Bulletins/Health

Common Hygiene Mistakes that you probably didn’t know about! • Using antibacterial soap might not be that great after all. Most antibacterial soaps include Triclosan, which according to studies cause damages to skin cells, as well as heart and muscle tissue if used excessively. Perhaps it’s time to go back to your regular soap. • We all hate earwax, right? And many of us use those tiny lifesavers cotton swaps on a daily bases. However, according to several doctors’ testimonials, cotton swaps actually cause more harm than good. It could not only push the earwax more to the inside, but one could easily

punctures his/her eardrum, which could be really disturbing and painful. It’s recommended to use a washcloth instead. • Using a high-quality toothbrush and toothpaste are not sufficient for good tooth hygiene on their own, but it’s more importantly about how you use them. You should brush your teeth for at least two minutes, both in the morning and night, so that 30 seconds are allocated to each quarter of your mouth. And the brushing should be in circular motion not up and down.

Workout Overdose! BY: SAMIRA KHALIL

A

re you suffering from decreased exercise performance? Irregular menstrual periods? Or maybe fatigue, muscles aches or elevated heart rate at rest and during exercise? If yes, you could be at risk of overtraining. The question is: Fitness junkies, are you overtraining?

There is a thin line between Overloading and Overtraining and it’s really important to know the difference. Overloading principle occurs when we put more demands on our bodies to increase endurance or strength. For example, if you lift weights, you may challenge yourself by adding more weights or decreasing the weight and adding more reps. On the contrary, overtraining is when we exercise “too excessively” without giving your body adequate rest and recovery time. Overtraining not only affects our physical health, but also our mental health. Contrary to the popular belief, muscles DO NOT get stronger while you exercise; It’s after the workout that they grow & develop. When I first started getting more serious towards exercising long time ago, I was 60 | September 2014

always reading about how celebrities trained for 6 hours straight a day to get ready for the latest movie or song clip. I started training for more than two hours a day, didn’t have any rest days. This is when I started damaging my muscles and broke it down. Besides, we have lives and we cannot feasibly train for 5-6 hour a day. Overtraining can be counterproductive and can have many damages to the body.

Overtraining Symptoms According to Princeton University, Overtraining symptoms include general fatigue, Insomnia, decreased appetite, Increased Injuries and mood swings. According to my own experience, I encountered general fatigue, muscle soreness, aches, morning headaches and I stayed in bed during weekends.

Simple rule: Do not train a muscle group more than twice a week. For example biceps can be trained on Mondays and Thursdays only. By this rule I am sure that I trained my biceps more than once a week and at the same time I rested between the two training sessions. This is when true progress happens. Do you know what happens when you feel a burning sensation while training your biceps? When we work a muscle, the muscle fibers tear. It’s only when we give it proper rest and recovery that it repairs itself, grows leaner and stronger. But if you kept on training biceps everyday, you will break it down.

There is a thin line between Overloading and Overtraining and it’s really important to know the difference.

What do we do to avoid overtraining?

Have you ever heard body builders saying words like “My muscle is feeding on itself.” Surprisingly this is very true. Overtraining makes our muscles more likely to “Absorb” its own lean muscle for energy.

Recovering from Overtraining If you ever felt the above symptoms, then it’s time to alter and change your exercise routine. Firstly, STOP what you are doing and take a break to allow for muscle and body recovery. I can’t tell you how many days to rest, just listen to your body and how you feel in general. Start with one week and see how you feel. After you feel you are getting better, start slowly and gradually into getting back to your trainings. Secondly, get adequate amount of sleep while ensuring you are eating well. All these steps are interconnected and can influence each other. Eat yourself out of Overtraining! We often ignore food and its great impact on health and exercise. Find your balance and increase your protein intake, add more fresh fruits and veggies to your daily intake. Don’t skip meals and most importantly don’t pack yourself with unhealthy calorie dense foods like chips, cookies and junk food. By eating the right choices of food at the right time, you are speeding up your recovery time As I always tell you how important to move it and not get lazy, it’s as equally important to listen to your body and know when to take a break, so as not to burn out your body. Train smartly, eat clean and RECOVER.

The Dancing , it’s me

Queen

BY: NATASCIA PAOLUCCI

!

Always wanted to steal the dance floor? Could also lose a couple of pounds or tone-up a little? Well, why compromise: have both. Far away from the outdated and narrow-minded image of the strip teasing, pole dancing has become the new fitness rage. In a delicate blend of graceful dancing and perfect control of the body in motion, this intense workout has opened to everyone. Or let’s say, every adventurous one.

If doubt still subsisted, here are eleven reasons to climb the pole:

It burns Calories quickly: Since you are constantly contracting muscles and holding poses, you can burn up to 350 Calories in an hour. This compares to fitness activities and can lead to significant weight loss when practiced regularly. It is a cardio workout: Because you are constantly in motion your heart pumps more blood into your veins. Indeed, pole dancing is considered a moderate to intense aerobic workout. Improved blood flow is especially important for those participants with sedentary lifestyles, as it decreases the risk of cardiovascular diseases and thromboembolic accidents. It is a strength workout: It is true that you won’t be lifting dumbbells or bars, but you will be lifting weights; your own. Because you will be constantly carrying parts of your body, you will build lean muscle. And as we know it, muscles burn more energy than fat, which will further increase weight loss. 62 | September 2014

It is an endurance workout: Once in midair, you cannot simply give up. You must go though the process of raising yourself back into a position that is safe to hold while getting back to the floor. This may be slow and more importantly controlled. Such efforts will increase your endurance, which become interesting beyond the classroom. Indeed, you will be able to walk longer, hold your bags longer, and play with your children longer… It is a flexibility workout: In the same way ballet dancing and yoga increase flexibility, pole dancing will

increase your suppleness. And, as you become limber you will also have fewer problems like back pain, a stiff neck and muscle soreness. You will also minimize the risk of sprains and will be able to move more freely. It is good for bones and joints: Although the physical effort is real, you are not putting huge stress on your joints, as you would if you were running or skipping rope. As such, pole dancing is a very safe form of exercise. For instance, due to the fact that you are constantly strengthening the muscles in your hands by gripping the pole, common repetitive strain injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome can be avoided. In general, developing strong bones and connective tissue, along with increasing joint mobility, helps significantly decrease the risk of osteoporosis in women. It is good for balance: You will find yourself upside down, moving in mid air… and you will have to find your way back. And this will build your sense of kinesthetic awareness. It refers to your brain’s ability to calculate where your body is located in three-dimensional space in relation to other objects around you. As such, when you start performing more complex routines, your kinesthetic awareness increases. This means less chance of injuries due to bumping into stuff. Combined with good balance, increased kinesthetic awareness allows you to avoid nasty common accidents like slipping, falling, and knocking things over and having them fall on your feet, etc. It may ease the pains of child birth: This one may seem farfetched and it definitely does not mean that you should attempt pole dancing during labor… Really, don’t. Instead, one of the lesser-known benefits of pole dancing is that this form of training can be beneficial later on in life when you decide to have a child. Pole dancing develops exceptionally strong back and abdominal muscles, which helps minimize back pain during pregnancy and actually helps you have a smoother and less painful child birth. It is good for self-awareness and self-control: Mistakes when you are in midair or when your head is facing the floor can be disastrous… Gravity will not be helping. This is why it will be absolutely essential to learn to master every inch of your body and control every movement. Do not worry, teachers and coaches are well trained. They should be able to provide you with safety mats and constant supervision. They will also make sure that you have warmed up your muscles enough. More importantly still, they will always make sure that you have perfectly understood what is implied.

It will build self-confidence: As you better understand your body and the environment in which it evolves, you will also realize how well you can navigate the world. You will become ever more confident in your own abilities, and your capacity to overcome fears (of falling or failing) and prejudices (of being able to do as well as others). If you can master a pole and dance around it, it becomes difficult to imagine there is still something you cannot learn to do. It is fun! And this is the secret to a lasting motivation to exercise. Initiate your friends and have fun. Fun is very healthy… September 2014 | 63

Tips to Kiss your Love Handles

Goodbye!

Love handles are among the trickiest parts to put in shape, and not all exercises will help you lose them. Here are some tips to help you out: • Include high-intensity interval training in your workout routine. For instance, jog or run with normal pace for 3 minutes, then do a 1 minute sprint. Such variation will speed up you metabolism and burn fats. • Add a twist to your squats. Hold a dumbbell for some resistance and while in the sitting position of the squat, move the dumbbell with your both hands down to you left hip, and then as you standing up, move it outwards to the right with your torso moving with it. This little twist will help you tighten up your love handles. • Twisting bicycle crunches are also effective for shaping up that part. Twisting crunches differ from the regular one in that you try to touch your knees with your elbows, moving your left knee to your right elbow and vice versa. These twisting movements will tighten the muscles around your waistline. • Circuit training has proven to work well with love handles as well, as it stimulates muscle tissue. • Woodchoppers and side plank hip lifts are also good for shaping your waistline. Exercising is good for tightening up your love handles, but it won’t be enough to burn the fat around your abdomen, so you need to alter your diet first through following these simple steps: • Reduce the over all calories you consume to get rid of the access fat. • Avoid white food, like sugar, salt, and white flour, as they assist in accumulating fat around abdomen. • Packaged snacks bring nothing but bad news! All the artificial ingredients and preservatives would just add calories and won’t fill you up with the fibers you need. • Satisfy your thirst with water instead of sodas and canned beverages. Having a warm glass of water with lemon would get rid of all the unwanted waste in your body.

Why Eat This? • A 2-tablespoon serving of peanut butter contains 7 grams of protein. Your body uses the amino acids found in protein to build and repair muscle tissue. • The protein in peanuts, like other plant proteins, contains an incomplete set of amino acids, so you should have a glass of milk with your peanut butter sandwich to complete the set. • Peanut butter contains the same ratio of saturated to unsaturated fats as olive oil. • A healthy body needs a good supply of healthy fats, and peanut butter is a great source of healthy fats. • The poly and mono-unsaturated fats in the spread lower your risk of

Super Food... Chili Peppers • Chili peppers can provide pain relief for migraine and sinus headaches. Capsaicin, the chemical that makes chili peppers hot, is known to inhibit a key neuropeptide, Substance P, that is the key brain pain transmitter. • Capsaicin not only causes the tongue to burn, it also drives prostate cancer cells to kill themselves. • Eating chili peppers are naturally high in vitamins A and C, and also bioflavonoids. They help strengthen your blood vessels, which makes them more elastic and better able to adjust to blood pressure fluctuations. Chili peppers also can make you sweat, which causes fluid loss, temporarily reducing overall blood volume. 66 | September 2014

• Chili peppers can help you lose fat because they are a thermogenic. Thermogenics stimulate the body’s burning of fat by increasing the metabolism of the body’s adipose tissue, generating heat. • They act as an anti-inflammatory agent. It inhibits Substance P, which is associated with inflammatory processes. • Chili peppers also act as a cure for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Antioxidants in blueberries may help ward off muscle fatigue by mopping up the additional free radicals that muscles produce during exercise. Recently, researchers found that people who drank 1 ounce of concentrated cherry juice twice daily for 10 days bounced back faster from their workout than those who skipped the juice. Ginger is also found to have rich in inflammation-fighting compounds, such as gingerols, which may reduce the aches of osteoarthritis and soothe sore muscles.

Bulletins/Nutrition

Reasons Why you Should Shift to Whole Grains • Shifting to wholegrain reduces the risk for cardiovascular disease, because eating whole instead of refined grains significantly lowers total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, and insulin levels. • Whole grains not only lower cholesterol, but also lower blood pressure, one of the most important risk factors for heart disease. • A good reason to eat whole grains is fiber. Fiber helps you feel fuller longer. It also has several health benefits, such as controlling blood sugar, lowering bad cholesterol and reducing colon cancer risk. Focus on oats, barley and bulgur. • Fiber present in whole grains helps prevent constipation. It also helps prevent diverticular disease (the development of tiny pouches inside the colon that are easily irritated and inflamed) by decreasing pressure in the intestines. • Instead of eating doughnuts and white bread, shift to brown rice and dark bread, because people who eat refined grain are more likely to gain weight than those who eat a lot of whole grains. In short, whole grains keep your weight in check. • One main benefit of whole grains compared to refined grains is that it reduces your risk of type 2 diabetes, as they help keep your blood glucose from spiking. • Whole grains are rich in the B vitamins thiamin, riboflavin and niacin, all of which are involved with metabolism. Another B vitamin, folate (folic acid), helps the body form red blood cells and is critical for preventing birth defects in babies. • Eating whole grains early in life may ward off asthma and other allergic conditions. • Whole grains are also a great source of the minerals our bodies need to stay healthy. These include iron, which transports oxygen throughout the body and helps prevent anemia, magnesium, which builds bones, and selenium, which protects against oxidation. They also contain zinc, necessary to keep your immune system in fighting shape. September 2014 | 67

Toothsome Metabolism-Boosting Recipes BY: DINA A. KARAM

L

et me start by saying that food is my passion; I always need a snack, and I guess I’m not alone. But that’s okay, if you want to lose some weight, then all you have to do is choosing the right snacks that would boost your metabolism. Green Tea If there is one beverage you should always consume with your healthy snacks, make sure it is fresh green tea! Green tea is an amazing fat burning drink, and it works perfectly to speed up your metabolism. Oatmeal Has a very high amount of fiber and slow digesting carbohydrates; the perfect combination to keep you full and satisfied for long periods of time. It is also fairly low in calories. I will have a big bowl of oatmeal in the morning and sprinkle cinnamon on it. One large bowl of plain oatmeal with cinnamon has less than 200 calories and keeps me full for up to three hours! The main benefit of oatmeal is that it also helps to lower insulin levels, meaning that your body will be less likely to store fat. Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast Another amazing muscle builder and fat burner. A typical boneless and skinless chicken breast has less than 200 calories and over 40 grams of protein, making it the perfect lean muscle builder you need after an intense workout. The high amount of lean protein will help to stimulate your metabolism and build lean muscle while burning fat. It is the perfect protein source for lunch or dinner. Canned Tuna It’s extremely high in protein and very low in fat, carbohydrates, and calories. High amount of protein in canned tuna will help you build muscles, which will aid in a healthy metabolism boost. It makes for a perfect late afternoon snack Tuna has been one of my favorite metabolism-boosting foods for quite some time.

inSeason’s wrap is for the days where your stomach can’t handle salads anymore. These wraps will manage to keep your body in shape and healthy too. Now, for all calorie-cautious fellows, cheat meals are bitter sweet delicacies. You no longer have to live with the guilt, because inSeason offers delicious parfaits that are completely low-fat, and, you say it, healthy too. These toothsome deserts contain creamy vanilla Greek yogurt, crunchy home-made maple almond granola, seasonal fresh fruit, and the super power of quinoa and chia seeds sweetened with honey. Another cheat meal you can wave goodbye is potatoes. Try out inSeason’s special baked potato, drenched in some of their yummy sauces. These potatoes are an excellent source of potassium, even more than a banana. If you think you have heard it all, then you’re wrong. inSeason provides you with cold pressed juices. So what are they? When vegetables or fruits are cold pressed, it ensures that all nutrients are contained; however, when blended some nutrients are unfortunately lost. Luckily, we don’t have to worry about that anymore. These juices act as a skin glower, metabolism booster, detox, youth reviver and many more. To cut it short really, inSeason is redefining nutrition in Cairo, educating Egyptians about it, and hopefully, making healthy our new lifestyle.

Love & Relationships

Bettina Knows Best…

Is my Relationship Doomed? Dear Bettina,

I

have been with my boyfriend for about seven months now; I knew there were a couple of traits in me he didn’t like, but one day I exceeded the limits by disrespecting him, and it truly triggered him to confront me with my flaws. He told me that he loved me a lot, but he couldn’t accept some traits in me, which I think I need to work on as well. He continued telling me that if such traits do not change, he wouldn’t be able to continue in such a relationship. I’m glad he’s giving us a chance to work it out, but I just can’t help but feel insecure that at any minute he would walk out and leave. Should I accept this criticism, and start working on my downfalls, or this is a sign of a doomed relationship?

BY: BETTINA HEMMINGSEN

Sincerely,

R.F.

Dear R.F., The first stage of a relationship is where the sparks fly, and love and passion almost turn into intoxication that blurs our sense of judgment. The next stage is where we start to compromise so if you find yourself continually making changes in order to please another person, that is the biggest warning sign that your relationship will eventually self destruct. It becomes especially dangerous when you start compromising your core values. The third phase is when resentment begins. When you start to make changes in order to please another person, it’s often done out of fear of being alone, but eventually you make so many changes that you’re no longer yourself and you start to resent the other person. All of a sudden this person you were initially infatuated with has turned you into a version of yourself that you’re no longer comfortable with. At this point it’s only a matter of time before the relationship will self-destruct, which is the fourth phase. The reason why we hang on when we really should let go is basically because we need the attention. So even though the relationship makes us unhappy, the fear of being alone makes us trying to force square pegs into round holes. If you find yourself headed down this path, it might be time to re-evaluate your relationship.

Best of luck, Bettina

Marriage Cheers, Fat Fears! 101 Physical Exercise, Spiritual Health, and the Aftermaths of Wedding Bliss! BY: LAUREN K. CLARK

78 | September 2014

It’s the moment of joy, bridesmaids’ shopping, the wedding planner, invitations, lunch dates with the mother-inlaw, going over budgets with the perspective groom, the wedding cake, outings with friends, and Sigh. . .the dress! Dun dun dun!!! I can almost hear the orchestra making its grand entrance! The final image of a woman’s dream wedding is how well the bride looks in her dress, and how well they look good together. The final couple photo captures this. There are 2 unions in fact; the bride and groom, tuxedo and gown. Couples seem to make this the final attraction to the grand finale! Spending months and months at the gym, while making sure to trim from the belly, muscle toning, 6-pack abs, a nice derriere, and all the other parts needing to be polished! Many soon-to-be brides and grooms spend months at the gym to ensure that they are fit and create, the image! It becomes more about the outside appeal for others, rather than the needed soul work, and the preparation between two spirits and their union. And this is where the problem after the wedding begins. Those annoying pounds that you worked so hard to get ride of come dancing back onto the belly, hips, and thighs. The highlights of the wedding bliss fade away, and a destructive sentiment begins. One of the partners becomes physically less appealing to the other; one is more active than the other; criticism starts, in addition to frustrations, then less sex, and the list goes on. Pretty soon, you begin to wonder why you decided to even marry your “other half.” The fact remains is this, exercise, meditative practices, and other physically spiritual routines should be more than fuel for an image. These relationship tools are spiritual contracts between the two individuals involved in this union. A coupling that works out together is one that emits the following statement: “I care about your existence.” It initiates the aura that both of you are in tuned, and care about the physical and spiritual health of your partner. Working out together should be conducted prior to, leading up to, and after the wedding. Wokring out is a commitment, ensuring that each of you is the gatekeepers of the other’s health, and therefore, the guardians of this union! Physical exercise, meditations, yoga practices, and other health rituals ensure that you care for each other, encourage each other, and propel each other in times of vulnerabilities, low self-esteem, self-incompetence, and even self-doubt. Physical fitness is a seed, which must be watered, nourished;

it must be treasured. And furthermore, it must not be used as a destructive utensil for wedding showboat imagery, only for it to be unraveled for criticisms, comparisons, ego, psychological, emotional, and spiritual violence. What do these constitute as? Belittling your partner for their weight gain (or weight loss). Using exercise (and the physical outcome) to attract others outside of the union. Comparing your partner to yourself (to others), and seeing yourself as being physically more attractive; therefore, feeling more deserving of something, or someone better. The list goes on and on. These are examples of the spiritual violence, that takes place when the preparation leading up to the wedding focuses on status, and the appeal for others (whom some may only come with destructive intentions and energies). When wedding preparation becomes about everything, but the true objective of the wedding, as a celebration of love, then a destructive aftermath is the end result. Yet, if physical nourishment, weight loss, meditations, are power tools for the growing of a union, then this form of care is sure to last after the show. Exercising together before consummation of the union (the wedding) is practice for the journey ahead. You are able to figure out what works between the two of you. The obstacles and challenges of maintaining physical health can release secrets, exposing you to the inner core of your souls. You become closer. You know more of each other. The practice comes to intertwine the two spirits, becoming mirrors of each other. Seeing the flaws of yourself in your other whole. Physical exercise between each other is also another way of ensuring that both individuals are whole by themselves. Therefore, when coming together on that special day, abundance from both sides is present. That is the nature of physical therapy, exercise, and the nourishment of health between couples. It empowers their union. Becoming a treasure box during times of trial and strife. Lastly, it serves in shaping the core of the marriage-which is the preservation of each other.

Wokring out is a commitment, ensuring that each of you is the gatekeepers of the other’s health, and therefore, the guardians of this union!

AH! WEDDING BLISS!

Mother & Child

Your Guide to a nutritious school comebacK

A

s the summer ends and our children get ready for school, we start planning ahead for clothes, school supplies and books. The important decision however that we must make every day for our children as parents could get confusing: What do they eat for lunch? Studies have shown that the habits we start during childhood and adolescence often carry on into adulthood. So, while we prepare our children to succeed in the classroom, we also need to start to provide them with the appropriate nourishment in the lunchroom. Here are some tips provided by Dr. Enas Mogawer, Professor of Internal Medicine at Cairo University, Consultant Endocrinology, and the Clinical Nutrition and Obesity Department Manager at As-Salam International Hospital:

Feeding Behavior: • You can choose what food to feed your child, but your child chooses how much to eat. • Do not force, bribe, threaten, or punish your child, instead, praise your child for eating well. • Do not punish your child by not feeding him or her.

List of meals that are healthy enough, nutritious and easy to handle: Breakfast: • Grilled cheese sandwiches (you could add: Mustard, Olives, and Lettuce) + 1 boiled egg • Cornflakes with Fruits • 1 cup of milk or Yogurt + 1 Apple + Boiled eggs • Pudding to which slices of bananas, dates or raisins are added. For all, a glass of orange juice is a plus.

School Lunch: • Cold cut sandwich (Turkey breast – Chicken – Roast beef – Ground beef or Tuna) • Cucumber slices, tomato slices and olives. • Dried fruit snacks • Pasta or Tuna salad

Snacks: • • • • •

Dried fruits Yogurt + Fruit Nuts + dried fruits Banana cakes Soups; especially Lentil soup, mushroom soup, vegetable soup.

80 | September 2014

Food Advice: • Train your child not to fill on drinks. Food must come first and limit juices to one can or packet per day. • Don’t worry if your child wants to eat the same food every day. • Offer foods that are easy for your child to handle, French fries, slices of banana, or peas. • Add margarines, mayonnaise, gravies, and grated cheese. • For snacks, use cheese, pudding, bananas, or dried fruit.

Feeding Times: • Children need to eat often, but not all the time. • Offer something every two to three hours, to allow three meals and two to three snacks a day. • Avoid snacks right after an unfinished meal. • Children work well with schedules. Try to keep mealtimes and snacks times about the same each day. • Allow one hour without food or drink (except water) before a meal. • Do not make mealtime too long for your child.

A FAIRYTALES’ GEM BY: NIVINE MUKHTAR

B

eauty, Romance and Royalty, these are the best synonymous words for blue sapphire which is September’s birthstone. Sapphire became a link between modern days and fairytales first when Prince Charles presented a blue sapphire engagement ring to Princess Diana which was the same ring that was presented by Prince William to his beloved Kate Middleton’ for their engagement.

The word Sapphire is derived from the Greek word “sappheiros,” which means blue. Sapphire beauty is not the only reason for its popularity, but it is also valued for its constancy and durability. Sapphires are known for being one of the hardest minerals on earth just after diamonds. The sapphire’s hardness does make it easy to be taken care of and does not require much attention as other gemstones.

Padparadscha comes from the Sinhalese word meaning “lotus color.” Padparadscha sapphires are very rare.

The blue sapphire, the birthstone for September, is a relative of July’s birthstone, ruby, as both are varieties of the same mineral, called corundum. In fact the only difference between a sapphire and a ruby is the color. Red corundum is called the ruby, while all other gem quality forms of corundum are called sapphires.

Good quality blue sapphires are found in Burma, Sri Lanka and India. The finest Indian sapphires come from Kashmir and are ”cornflower blue“ in color, as the cornflower is one of the few flowers said to be purely blue and not violet or purple like most other “blue” flowers. Sapphires are also found in Thailand and Australia, and they are dark blue in color. Blue sapphires also come from Montana in the USA, Brazil, Kenya, Malawi, Colombia and Tanzania.

Contrary to the many peoples’ beliefs, not all sapphires are blue! Sapphire is actually found in a variety of different colors. Fancy sapphires as they are called come in dark gray, pink, orange, green, violet, purple, yellow and black. The most valuable of the fancy sapphires is an orange-pink or pinkish orange called “Padparadscha.”

82 | September 2014

Ancient Persians believed that the world was set upon an enormous sapphire which reflected its color to the sky. Another legend states that Moses was given the Ten Commandments on tablets of sapphire, making it the most holy gemstone.

Blue sapphire is a connotation of elegance, wealth and beauty. When gifted, it is a true symbol of love, commitment and fidelity.

Virgo Fashion Sense Virgos like to wear a tailored outfit made of polyester or any shinny material that always has a proper fitting. They prefer to wear tight patterned clothing. They can never be seen in the absence of accessories. Virgo Hairstyle These perfectionists like neat, buttoned up styles. Think shoulder-length bobs with a very clean line or long super straight, silky locks. Keratin treatments were made for Virgos—every hair should be in its exact proper place! The look is sophisticated, understated and elegant, yet you may not know how much time it took your Virgo to create that simple look—she’ll keep it a secret! What’s it like to date a Virgo woman A Virgo woman is earthly and she may seem cold and detached, but underneath the timid, reserved surface lies the real woman; a strong, passionate woman with a great capacity for strong devoted love. She will play hard to get, she is hard to get for she is worried about exposing her emotional vulnerabilities and getting hurt. She requires patience and you will have to court her and work hard to impress her. Once she is in love, it is for the long term. She will be devoted, loyal and make you very happy and even put a little order in your life. What’s it like to date a Virgo man The Virgo man has a cool exterior with a sensitive interior. He has tremendous respect for a woman and will treat her like an equal. He likes woman who stir his emotions because he is reluctant to express them, and this often causes conflict not just inside himself, but it spills out into the relationship. This man takes patience and understanding. He will not get extremely close so do not try to enter his psyche and become closely entangled, this will make him feel threatened. He needs a classy woman who is not impulsive or unconventional. He leads a predictable life and a predictable woman will make him feel safe. He is perfect for the down to earth, conventional woman. Virgo Erogenous Zone The stomach area is very sensitive to Virgo. Stroke it, circle their belly button with your finger, or give them a light belly massage. This makes them feel warn and will help open them up a little bit. Be gentle, no sudden moves or vicious acts like biting or slapping, this will startle them and cause them to retreat.
