Dear Karma, What’s up? How is the whole “What goes around comes around” working out for you? I hope all is good and that you’re enjoying torturing people for things that they don’t even remember doing when they were 12. I understand, we humans are not exactly saints, and you’re probably having a lot on your plate, but I am writing you hoping you could give me more information regarding the whole process. See I’ve been paying my dues for a while now, and I’ve had my past doings coming around to hunt my present, but I’m not complaining or anything; I’ve seen it coming. Long live you Karma, the queen of justice. You’ve masterfully delivered the message, and I salute your shrewd sense of humor; you got me good. But when is it my turn? You know I’ve seen my fair share of wrong doings as well, and I was wondering, when are those due? Is it like some sort of a waiting list? Do you go alphabetically? Seriously, it’s getting frustrating. Why is it taking you so long to show me your wonders with regards to those who mistreated me? Is it because I called you a b*#% the other day? Well I’m sorry; it

was uncalled-for. The thing that worries me the most is the possibility of you counting on my forgiveness, because I assure you this ain’t gonna happen any time soon. Yes I am aware we’re approaching a new year and believe me I hope I could just let go and start with a clean slate, but it’s just not happening; I’ve never been that good with this whole “forgive and forget” holistic approach. And please don’t get me wrong, I trust you got your ways; and am not going all vendatta or anything. I’m sure you’ve been following the tragedies the world has been recently going through, and you understand that keeping our faith in humanity is getting harder and harder. The thing is that nowadays we desperately need to see a magnification of justice being served for ourselves, rather than just believing in it or hearing about it. Maybe knowing that justice is actually being served would help me and many others practice our forgiveness, because I don’t want to forgive just because it’s my only option! I don’t believe this would even count as forgiveness. So would you do something about that please? Can you push me up to the top of list for a change? I promise I’ll be better this year...

Sincerely,

Noha Kandil 8 | December 2015

Bazarna

The one that took Events Organization to the Next Level

T

here is no doubt that the fashion industry is growing so fast in Egypt, with aspiring local talents rising day after day. With the growing number of local talents, it gets harder to find a sufficient channel to reach customers, and here is where the innovative Bazarna, Events and Exhibitions Organization, jumped to the rescue! Established back in 2010, Bazarna has managed to create a reliable shortcut that connects buyers with sellers in the most creative ways, not only in fashion but in all sorts of diversified fields. Bazarna is one of Cairo’s top organizations specialized in arranging events and exhibitions. It’s a marketing and branding platform for emerging designers, brands and specialized boutiques in Egypt and the Middle East, that wish to introduce their services, designs and products to various audiences. Bazarna is an Arabic word which literally means “Our Bazaar”, a place where you will find all your local daily needs under one roof; And this is indeed what Bazarna organization has been successfully doing over the past 6 years. In time when most business owners were crawling and hiding due to the political and economic instability that the country was facing, Bazarna team stood their ground, adapted, and fulfilled their promise

of supporting entrepreneurs who help shaping our country. The organization itself is grounded on the idea of fostering the skills and creativity of Egyptian and Arab designers. All year-round, Bazarna has been a loyal companion through each and every major occasion; they put us into the festive summer mood, and get us ready for the chilling winter. They offer us the best platform to celebrate Mother’s Day, Ramadan, the Holidays and hook us up with the best supplies for the Back to School season. All of that while making sure that both the sellers/exhibitors and buyers are have a memorable fun shopping experience. And just when we thought that Bazarna has reached its peak, the innovative team proves us wrong and manages to take it to the next level with their most recent project, the 1st edition of the ‘Fashion Talk’ at Capital Business Park, Sheikh Zayed. A first of its kind of event that further shorten the path for young fashion talents to reach their potential, through opening a much needed discussion between experts and beginners; a move that further supports Bazarna’s vision of creating and a friendly interactive community that helps designers connect and inspire each other and reach easily their target clients.

Take a better care of your

Jewelry

With these Tips • It's always better to clean your jewelry frequently at a professional jeweler, but in case you don't have time for it, try to do some research, and check the instructions before cleaning your jewelry, because it differs depending on the material. • For gold, soak a soft toothbrush in a warm soap solution then carefully scrub the piece till it's clean, then rinse in a warm water to wash off the soap and dry it with a soft cloth. • Unlike gold, silver might actually tarnish. For regaining that silver glow, prepare a warm soap solution and rinse (never soak) the silver piece in it; then take it out and dry it using a soft cloth and then rinse it in a cool water and rub it again till its dry using a soft piece of cloth. • For more extreme tarnish cases, there are actually ready silver cleanser that you could purchase, but if you can't find it, use a mix of baking soda with water, then using a soft cloth apply the cleanser to the piece of silver, and keep smoothly rubbing it till it's dry. • Avoid circular rubbing of silver; use an up and down movement. • The best thing to do with pearls, is not to wear or place them with other jewelry, because they are extra delicate and can be easily scratched. Also to preserve the delicacy of pearls, clean them regularly using a clean piece of cloth, because skin acids would damage them otherwise. • Avoid applying lotion and perfume over the jewelry piece; and after applying whatever you want, wait a bit till the lotion/perfume is absorbed by your skin. And wipe your jewelry with a dry piece of soft cloth, just in case it got some chemical residuals on it. • Avoid wearing your jewelry when cleaning the house, because it might get in contact with cleaning chemicals, and might be scratched or lost while moving around. • Don't ever mingle your jewelry together; store every set on its own, and place it on a fabric covered box, or you could cover them up with a soft piece of cloth. 28 | December 2015

SPOTTED CELEBS LATEST NEWS & GOSSIP

Bassem Youssef Stirs a Buzz at the Emmys Egypt’s Jon Steward has stirred quite the buzz during his recent gig hosting the International Emmy Awards. During his opening monologue, the Egyptian “surgeon turned Satirist” addressed the racism issues against Arab Muslims in a clever way referring to himself as an Arab Muslim and the various misconceptions surrounding it. Youssef also tackled the recent terror attacks saying that we beat terrorists through laughter, and went on cursing the people responsible for those acts in a very explicit manner.

Top Hair Styles For

Winter 2015! rachel mcadams julianne hough emma stone "Bob" it Up! For several seasons the bob haircut has been dominant, and this winter is no different. The iconic haircut has been spotted on runways and been embraced by celebrities. Probably what makes the Bob so popular, is that it works for everyone and could be styled in all sorts of ways. The natural messy bob haircut is really in this season; the key however lies in the length. If you have a round shape face go for longer bobs or lobs; and if you have a taller face, Gabrielle Union then go for the shorter sassy look.

gwyneth paltrow cara delevinge

Down to Earth... If we're going to assign numbers, then the "Down to Earth" look comes in 2nd place right after the bob haircut. It's all about the natural bohemian look this season; whether you choose the long wavy cut, or go with a shorter natural style, "messy hair don't care" is the way to go!

Rock these Bangs Bangs are perfect for winter, as the breezy weather and low humidity help keep them in shape without curling up or sticking to the forehead. Bangs give a face a fuller shape, and that's why the taller you face shape, the more blunt is the bangs, and the better they will accentuate your features. However, sharp obvious bangs are not made for round faces; try to be subtle with it and style them sideways. Also, If you're going with bangs and fringes, then you should know you're up for some maintenance fees! Frequent trimming is a must to maintain the look.

ciara

dakota johnson

Kylie Genner

Kim Kardashian

Nicole Richie Straight to the Point The straight sleek hairstyle is a vigorous contender this season. Previously the sleek look was all backward, but now it's all about parting the hair, and it has to be spot on! To master the chic look, avoid blow-drying your hair, airdry instead. Using a detangler will also go a long way to give the complete clean look, and unlike what you might think, applying a high temperature when straightening your hair won't really work; if you see smoke coming out then you're doing wrong. Keep the temperature under control, while some might suggest using a live-in conditioner, we suggest you apply a strong hair spray afterwards. December 2015 | 37

Space: Space is the first thing you have to think about when arranging furniture, and it's usually the major challenge. If you're setting up furniture for a small space, don't let the walls confine you; nobody said you have to align your furniture to the walls. So for instance, if you have a square room, you could arrange you furniture in a creative circular or a triangular way away from the walls, which would give it a more of a roomy appeal.

For a BIGGE R Looking Home... Proportions: Convenience and practicality are two very important factors that you have to think about when you’re dealing with a small space. You have to make a room for people to move without banging into furniture around. The size of furniture might be convenient for the space you got. Don’t put an oversized piece that would take too much space from other elements. 40 | December 2015

Camouflage: Colors serve as an amazing camouflage for small size rooms. The trick here is to let the light into the room as much as possible. If you have a window with a view, don’t cover it up with curtains; let it bring sunrays in. For the wall and floor, choose bright colors as they give a spacious appeal; white is perfect in this case. Also, the higher you go with shelves and other similar elements, the better.

Accents/Decorations: For small spaces, curtains and carpets might not be the greatest ideas. Curtains/drapes cutout light which is necessary for making a room look bigger, and carpets/rugs also take away from the floor space; however, if you really want to use them, stripes patterns might work as they give a longer appeal. To give a small room an accent, you can add statement art pieces and paintings to the wall. Avoid too many small pieces; choose larger fewer pieces instead.

Simplicity: Keep the crazy ideas for the larger rooms. Simplicity is the key for small size rooms. Don't go crazy with color contrasts when choosing your furniture; one colored pieces or different shades of the same color would bring harmony and space to smaller rooms. December 2015 | 41

Christmas on the Beach!

W BY: FADY HANNA

henever we think of Christmas, we start imagining the Christmas tree with the snow as part of its decoration. Christmas songs start playing in the back of our minds and for a reason or another, we start feeling cold. Christmas for so long has been linked in our thoughts, dreams and memories with winter. And don’t get me wrong, it’s awesome. The Weihnachtsmarkt (a.k.a. Christmas Markets) in every German city, the Christmas trees in ChampsÉlysées in Paris, or the lights of Oxford street in London, all are fairytales and absolutely stunning, but how about experiencing a different Christmas? In fact, in some cultures Christmas is the hot season where Santa wears shorts and locals get a tan on the beach! Here are five top destinations where this is possible:

42 | December 2015

1. Cancun, Mexico

Get sun kissed in December in the only and only Cancun. I can’t understand those who say that Cancun is overrated! I guess that there is no other place like Cancun. They’re so confident about this fact to the extent of hanging a big welcoming sign reading “Welcome to Heaven!” upon arrival while you’re still at the airport after an exhausting long flight! However, if you think that Cancun is all about one big awesome beach, you’re mistaken! Cancun has spectacular the Maya Ruins, which includes the Chichen Itza Pyramid along with breathtaking underground caves that will take your breath away! Mexico is accessible with a US Visitor Visa, or you could simple apply for one at the Mexican Embassy in Cairo.

Should my toddler take vitamins?

Doctor’s Answer:

Depends. If your toddler is eating a well balanced diet with sources of protein, green leafy veggies and dairy products, a vitamin is probably not needed. If your water doesn’t have Fluoride your child may need a Fluoride supplement. However if their diet is deficient in a certain area a multivitamin may be a good idea. Talk to your pediatrician about your child’s eating habits.

Yes. Latisse is a prescription medication used to make your eyelashes fuller and longer. You must see your doctor for evaluation to see if you are a candidate for this prescription.

Doctor’s Answer:

Maybe both. That may be a result of both fever and dehydration. Fever, left untreated, will result in dehydration and they both (fever and dehydration) lead to tachycardia (rapid heart rate).

Pain Could be a lot of things but burning pain on one side alerts us to nerve pain so consider shingles especially if rash appears. Other common cause of right upper abdominal pain is gall bladder issues. I’d see a doctor to get some tests done.

Elizabeth Stewart Celebrity Stylist

How do you find the balance between staying chic while keeping yourself warm? Expert’s Answer:

“Well, I’m very tactile this winter—just picked up a couple coats. They’re cashmere and very soft. That’s my tip for this winter. I always think, ‘Have many coats—not as many coats as clothes—but have a range of colors.’ You don’t always just want to wear a black coat. I love to have a great red coat, or a plaid coat, or something. You can bring some color and special-ness to your outerwear. It’s really important.” Stewart stated in a recent interview with InStyle.

Processed meat wide varieties of that we consume on almost daily bases like some kinds of red meat, salami, sausage, hot dogs, bacon, smoked/salted/ flavored meat and cold cuts. The word “processed is due to the fact that it’s been artificially altered with chemicals and preservatives to extend its shelf life.

Bulletins/Health

The Truth About Processed Meat and Cancer

Meat are usually processed with nitrite chemicals that produce N-Nitroso, which is known for usage in cosmetics and other products, but most harmful when ingested. Cooking and grilling processed meat would further ignite the generation of such harmful chemicals. Research proved that those chemicals have been linked directly to certain types of cancer like bowl, pancreatic, colon and stomach cancer.

Sausages, hot dogs, and salami have been classified as Group 1, which indicates that they are carcinogenic , or in other words, causes cancer.

Other red meat, like beef, lamp and pork, has been classified as Group 2A, which indicates the probability of it causing cancer, but with less potential than Group 1 classification. 46 | December 2015

The Lady And Her Bags Introducing

Baggage Into the New Love : Yay or Nay? BY: LAUREN K. CLARK

“B

ag lady, you gonna hurt your back, dragging’ all them bags like that. . .” Yes, the words of Erykah Badu’s “Bag Lady” could not radiate more true for women whose suitcases have overflown. The emotional pain of break-ups, being heartbroken, and experiencing the agony of emotional betrayal. Time heals all wounds. The typical cliché phrase that loved ones surround us use when trying to give their upmost support. Time truly can heal. Yet, only in the right circumstances does it bring forth the necessary essence to truly heal. Circumstances, a different scenery, new people, new hobbies, and a new man may just be the key in getting over Mr. Heart Breaker!

56 | December 2015

Now flash forward to a new chapter, and a new cutie has entered your life. Well, not only is he handsome, but he is intelligent, professional, and all-around just a great guy. Which is why you can’t trust him. Right? You are always calling his phone, checking up on him, and are super defensive should any woman come too close. To you his female “friends,” can’t even be trusted. And a night out with the guys always turns into you frantically checking your watch, and staying up late just so that you can ask him your “Cheater Proof ” questions. So after all of that stress, your tears, him holding and comforting you, you end up repeating those painful moments and memories of how he broke your heart. Did you catch that? HE, the one in the past, who is no longer in your life broke your heart! Yet, the one who hasn’t , is paying for what he did. And the tiny secret of not having gotten over your ex-jerk is becoming more and more obvious in your new relationship. And the bags keep piling up! Yes, you are truly in love with your new man. He loves you back! The chemistry between the two of you is magical, and more intense than what you could have ever expected from a man. And Erykah Badu puts it clearly. . ”one day all them bags gone get in yo’ way.” The simple act of ridding yourself of past pains has become a major burden. It overtakes what you have to offer in your new relationship, and “one day he gone say, you crowdin’ my space.” And the next thing you know, you could be on the verge of losing true love because of it having betrayed you in the past. Yes, breathe. Heartbreak, emotional and psychological pain can hurt like hell! You went through the traumatic experience of not being able to get out of bed, unable to eat, and trying to find some meaning as to what will happen for you in the future. Going through a spiral of circles, you experienced firsthand, what it felt like to have no control over the actions of someone else. The anger, depression, and pain took you months, if not years, to get over. A painful agony, but also part of the healing process. You don’t want to go through that again! Who wants to? But you also want to experience love again. The dilemma. When you got into this new relationship, did you check any of the bags that you brought with you? Or did you even take inventory to the number you carried upstairs?

If the answer is No, then let’s do a brief one. • BAG 1—Do you notice any traces of him, your ex? Have you kept any pictures or objects lingering around? • BAG 2—Do you constantly beat yourself up about what you shoulda’, coulda’, woulda’ done? • BAG 3—Have you blamed yourself ? • BAG 4—Do you continue to hold your new love to the very same standard or expectations as your old one? • BAG 5—Have you shared this pain that you carry with your new love? Have you really sat done and had a serious talk about things? • BAG 6—Have you been willing to build trust, and expose your vulnerabilities to your new love? • BAG 7—Did you ever try, or engage in extensive work in releasing the pain that you are still carrying? • BAG 8—Do you talk to your new partner about certain habits they do, which triggers past pains? • BAG 9—Have you been honest with yourself in your decision to get into a new relationship? • BAG 10—Did you re-imagine a beautiful, new chapter with your new love partner, or do you establish it as a re-living of the old? Now that we have established our inventory list, have all the boxes been checked? After answering that question, do you find that you have too many bags on the list? If that be the case, then it is clear that you have a lot of baggage. And my Dear, it is time to unpack them. It hurt. There is no denying that. So the healing can begin. Slowly, but surely (step-by-step), we can begin to unpack each bag. Just one opening and inspection of the first bag is the first initiative. That’s all it takes, and the rest follows from there. Communication is another vital factor for this new relationship. If your new man is everything that you have ever wanted, then take him. Allow him to see into you, pains and all. Having baggage does not mean that you can’t have a fulfilling relationship. It simply means that you have to work a little harder to connect and get rid of. If he is a caring and sensitive man, then he will understand. There is no such thing as a perfect woman, or “perfect man.” We all come into a relationship with something. Pains, a touch of bitterness, and others. Of course, before getting into any relationship, it is very important to inspect your reasoning for getting into a new love. If it is simply to relieve the pain from the past, then perhaps you need to hold off and check your bags. December 2015 | 57

Mother & Child

H

ey mommies, Christmas is coming in a matter of days, and you probably developed a migraine from your kids’ nagging about what they want as presents. Yes we know that you find joy in seeing them happy and giving them what they want; and deep inside, you’ve been longing to see that look on their faces and that sparkle on Christmas morning while they eagerly unwrap their presents. However, you have to admit that you’re not exactly fond of how materialistic our modern age is becoming. Our kids are raised in a world, where whatsapp texts make more sense than spoken words; where dinner table talks are replaced with emoticons, and where toddlers are having tantrums over you taking your Ipad with you rather than the fact that you’re actually leaving! And God knows how more materialistic and drifted apart the world will get when they’re grownups. So the least we can do is to carve the sentimental values that we have luckily been raised with. We give you some ideas that you could implement this Christmas:

All or Nothing Process

Turn it into a process. From deciding the Christmas tree location, to picking it up, and choosing the ornaments, involve your kids in the whole process. Set a Christmas dinner menu with them, take them shopping for the ingredients and make them help you cook the whole meal. Also you could come up this "no phone allowed" policy during your gatherings; yes kids can be stubborn, especially around their teenage years, and they may see whatever your trying to do here not cool and they'll have this "whatever" attitude towards it. The solution? Ultimatums! They work like magic with kids. For instance, if they don't help in making Christmas dinner, you won't make the side dishes they like! Or if they refuse to put their phone away, you'll cut off the internet through the whole period. It might seem like a punishment to them, but as they grow older they'll understand what you've been trying to do.

Less Materialistic..More Memorable May you have a Very Special Christmas!

58 | December 2015

Sharing is Caring

Talk! Just sit around in your living room or wherever and talk for a change. Take turns and talk about your experiences throughout the year; crack a couple of jokes and have some sincere laughs. You can also turn it into a wedding toast theme, where each one of your family member would prepare this short speech through which you can share your feelings towards the others. It doesn't get more sentimental that that, does it?

Game Time!

If you're not the expressive or talkative type, you can always resort to gaming. Playing fun games and sharing activities is a great way to create unforgettable memories. You can play the traditional card games, board games or even twister, but to make it even more special try to invent your own family game, and turn it into a yearly family tradition.

Pass on the Legacy

Have you heard of the novel "The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants"? Well in case you haven't, it tells the story of a group of close friends who accidently found a "magical" pair of pants that amazingly fit each one of them perfectly, so they decide to share it equally, and as they drift apart during summer, it turns into a mean that brings them together in several ways. So why don't you do something similar for your family? Pick an item, it could be a basic shirt, a bracelet, or an ornament, and every Christmas someone in the family carry it for the whole year, and pass it on to the other and so on.

Keep a Record

Keeping a Christmas family journal could be of a great sentimental value; it's a simple idea for something that the whole family could contribute to. Starting this Christmas, get a journal, better to be a big one so that it would last longer; make every member add something to it, then wait till it runs out of paper to read it years from now. And you don't have to be a writer to add to it; you could simply write a word, draw something funny or whatever.

DECODING EGYPT....

BY: Haidy Zakaria

The Holidays are Coming…Merriment Included.

W

ell, the holiday season is upon us, and with that we celebrate all the holidays that come along with it. So let’s see, we celebrate two Christmases, one prophet’s mouled (PBUH), a thanksgiving, new year’s eve and a partridge in a pear tree. Oh did I forget to mention the Valentine’s day that we decided to have in November? I looove that one. Because we live in sunny Egypt, we take it upon ourselves to celebrate each one of them with fervor. By fervor, I mean the street vendors who start making creepy dolls of Santas, goats, hearts and hats of all shapes and colors. We add our own little umph to each of them, there is always a little “Egyptian” in the mix. There are the shopping malls that explode in (insert holiday color here). Not just this, but the people who decide to all wear the same color on the same day (my eyes!) and the themes we find on the menus in different restaurants. The year-round greeting of “kol sana wenta tayeb” increases ten-fold along with the cute additions of “Habby Falentine” and “Habby new year”. The one thing I like about the holiday season is the amazing amount of days off we get from work (yay sleep). But hold on, isn't the holiday season supposed to be about hanging out with your family? Aren't we supposed to gather around and, I don’t know, sing songs or tell stories and things like that? I always find an abundance of parties, outings and DJs gracing us with their presence by this time of year, but nothing about spending time with our fambam. There isn't even a place to hang out in that’s all nice and quiet or even where people can hear each other speak. I know I sound like a 50 year old guy with a temper, but hey, a girl can like her peace and quiet. So, whether you’re into creepy santa dolls, color coding with the bae (see what I did there?), partying it out with the gang or just chilling somewhere quiet, I hope you have a great holiday season and a "habby" new year. 60 | December 2015

The movie is a mystery thriller that tells the story of a detective’s daughter brutal murder, and her search for revenge and closure with the help of her team.
