Letter Editor’s

Till Seasons Do Us Part

A

nd in the blink of an eye, Winter waved goodbye and Spring saluted us once again, and as every season comes and go, I hop a little and sob a little. Happiness fills every inch of me every time my favorite season, Summer, drives in after a long departure, and with each goodbye a part of me weeps. Although I know we will meet again, but every year it breaks my heart to see my favorite of all, so effortlessly, leave out the door. A season is a division of the year, marked by changes in weather, ecology and hours of daylight. Each and every one of us loves a certain season with all its beauty, changes, ups, downs, flaws, everything. Each one of us feels that they have a certain belonging to one season. Each one of us has a particular season they can’t let go of, and no matter where life takes you, you’ll long for that specific season. Throughout your life, you’ll try all seasons out, without a doubt, and every time you are definite that this is YOUR season, comes along another one afterwards and suddenly you forget the one before, as if it never happened, as if it never existed. And as you meet different seasons and all seasons, you begin to truly know which season’s traits suit you best, and most importantly, you begin to be aware of which weather changes you’ll endure the most, with arms wide open. Even though I might complain about my favorite season, Summer, when its weather changes on me bluntly without further notice and with no reasons, deep inside me I know I’m still in love with it. Although I might scream and shout for another season when I’m angry with Summer, but truth is, if life gives me a whole new fifth season; a better one; a mixture of all seasons together, I would never give up on Summer, because I know for a fact that I cannot stand living without the warmth of my beloved, my one and only season.

Which Range of The ONE Suits You Best? Take Oriflame’s personality test and know what beauty range from The ONE suits you best and which range is relevant to your beauty needs! What do you look for in a guy? 1. He has to give me a challenge, because if I’m better at everything? What do I need him for? 2. Witty and funny. Anyone who can make me laugh. 3. Someone who cares about me and is interested in what I’m interested in.

What’s your favorite day of the week?

What could you improve about yourself ? 1. Nothing! I love myself JUST the way I am- I mean who doesn’t? 2. Nothing I can think of at the moment, but I’m sure there’s always something. 3. A lot of things, but I won’t worry about that now. Life is about living in the moment.

1. I can rock out ANY day! 2. Friday- because that’s the “rest” day, and perfect time to catch up on my home gardening. 3. After work- especially Thursday nights- WHAT a relief!

How do you view yourself as?

What’s your favorite type of pet? (of these)

If most of your answers are ONE:

1. Cat- I can relate to them. 2. Bird- I like to hear them sing when I’m baking. 3. Anything that takes care of itself.

How are you perceived as by others? 1. Crazy when the time’s right...okay just crazy! 2. Down to earth and fun-loving. 3. Sporty and anything’s game- life’s a competition.

Do you like shopping? 1. Of course, especially exciting colors. 2. Not really. A T-shirt and a pair of comfy Khakis will do. 3. Yeah! I’m at the mall ALL the time!

How do you want your guy to treat you? 1. Like a queen. They should be on their hands and knees. 2. Hug me and give me pecks just to be affectionate. 3. As an equal. Life’s too short to play too many games. What’s your favorite type of food? (of these) 1. Celery stalks and water- wouldn’t want to die squeezing into my size 0 jeans! 2. Spaghetti- because it’s yummy, and I’m not afraid to get sauce all over my mouth and chin. 3. Anything good. Fast food when I’m on the run, fine dining when I have time, TV dinners for those latenight “me time” moments.

18 | April 2014

1. Everyone likes me. Mostly because I’m pretty, popular, and oh, did I say pretty already? 2. I consider myself sweet, nice, a good listener. 3. I’m outgoing, loud, and love to laugh.

High Impact: You’re bold, crazy, outspoken and you love it! Some people might feel intimidated by your personality, but with a head turner like you, who cares? The High Impact range is made especially for you to embrace that unique exciting personality of yours.

If most of your answers are TWO: Everyday Beauty: You are the definition of femininity. You are beauty and mind in one package all together. Your inner and outer beauty is always obvious, which is why The Everyday Beauty range is your ultimate choice. You like everything simple, sweet and nice like you.

If most of your answers are THREE: Long Wear: It is without a doubt that this is the perfect range for such a powerful woman as you. You are a busy woman who is working with her glasses on and your life is full of meetings, cocktail parties, dinners and laptops. The Long Wear range will never let you down!

W

e all know that if you give a woman the RIGHT shoes, she will CONQUER the World! Actually most of us get carried away and might own 10 black boots, so if you are planning to make a good investment this season, here's a list that will help! Black Pumps: A woman can never deny the magic vibe of black pumps; it simply adds elegance to any outfit. Wooden Platform Sandals: Designers amazed us this season, with a breath-taking collection of those! Moreover, wedged ones are comfortable and perfect for walking on uneven ground like gardens and pavements. Floral Printed Shoes: Whether it’s heels, wedges or flats; you'll be seeing a lot of floral prints in everything this season including shoes with all designs, so you'd better get yours. Ankle-Strap Heels: Ladies, these will lengthen your legs perfectly and adds a feminine touch to your look. Tip: This could be a little tricky, if the strap is too tight around your ankle it will give the impression that your legs are chubby. Ballet Flats: The best way to describe those is COMFORTABLE! I advise going with a bright color and black basics with a print if you want to add an edge to it.

Metallic-heels: Since we are still hung up on nostalgia, metallic heels are so hot this season; they are perfect for an evening event. Flat Leather Sandals: Those would be perfect if you're heading to a brunch with your friends in an outdoors area, or enjoying the beach this Easter. Wedged Sneakers: We all love wearing high heels, but we don't love the pain it brings us. Thanks to designers, we now have wedged sneakers! Booties: One word "SEXY," Suede Booties can go with jeans or short dresses; for some reason they just make your legs slimmer and more attractive. Short-Stacked Heels: Runways were just full of those! They are practical, fashionable and add an edgy look to your outfit. Casual Sneakers: Spend your weekend with a pair of fashionable comfortable casual sneakers and match your outfit to be giving this "Effortlessly Comfortable Vibe." Statement Work-of-art Shoes: "Statement" has been the theme of all runways and street-styles; I can't define them, because it differs according to your taste and style, choose a pair that will make you feel happy and follow your gut.

Tricks & Tips of a Beauty Queen BY: AYAT SEIF ELNASR

M

akeup can give you a healthy glow and bring out your best features, unless it’s done wrong. If you have been doing any of the mistakes that are mentioned here, there is no shame in that! I’m only giving you tips on how to look your best without looking like you are faking it.

Foundation: Don’t wear darker foundation to look tanned! Don’t wear lighter foundation to look whiter! Foundation mishaps is choosing the wrong foundation shade and not being able to test your foundation in store, or even simply not knowing how to choose your foundation shade. Foundation should match your neck and body. So, before buying a one, swatch it on your neck to make sure it gives you a seamless and natural effect.

Powder: It is again choosing the right shade (warm or cool tone) and it should complement your foundation shade. Also, don’t use powder foundation as powder. Powder foundation is foundation. Pressed powder can be used instead to set your foundation, rather than powder foundation. Powder foundation is meant to be worn on its own, because it has a decent amount of coverage. So packing powder foundation over foundation doesn’t only give you a packed up look, but actually is too heavy coverage for your skin which you don’t need. Its full coverage over full coverage! Powder is made to set your foundation and keep shine at bay. You should not be packing layers of makeup one by one over your face; the trick is to keep everything light and simple to give you maximum perfection. 44 | April 2014

Concealer: It’s a myth that light concealer hides darker circles and bags. If you lighten something you highlight it, so lighter concealer only draws attention to your flaws. Don’t use a lighter concealer if you have severe dark circles, instead, opt for a corrector (pink/peach tone concealer) to neutralize your dark circles, and then apply your right concealer.

Highlighter/blush/bronzer: Over highlighting can actually make your skin look oily and shiny. Don’t over highlight, and don’t apply highlighter in the wrong spots. Only use shimmery highlighter on your cheekbones. Sometimes it’s better to keep it sheer. Highlighter is meant to be used in moderation, so, if you apply it too much, it will look like a thick dense line on your cheek and will get you an “unwanted” type of attention. The over use of bronzer! Don’t apply a whole lot of

bronzer all over your face to look tanned, because overdoing it can make you look muddy. Bronzer can give you a nice alive, sun kissed, and sculpted face, if applied the right way on certain spots. You only apply bronzer underneath your cheekbones to sculpt it out, and a little bit on your forehead will help you frame it if you have a big shape. Bronzer can also define your nose, and there are several techniques to do that which we will be covering in a later stage. Bronzer makes a feature look receded, unlike highlighter, which makes a feature come forward. So here it is, cleared out. Also, you do not apply it as a blush! Using a bronzer can add a glow to the skin, but it can look dark on you, if it’s over applied on your cheeks, under your cheeks and on your cheek bones! WOOH! It’s everywhere. If you apply bronzer far too down to your face it can look like a beard! We don’t want that now, do we?

feminine. Also, you can wear your eyeliner on the upper lash line only, but you NEVER apply your eyeliner only on your lower lash line. It’s not very flattery.

Mascara: You apply a very thin coat on the top and bottom (or only top) lashes. But, do not apply a one thick coat on your eyelashes. If you want to make your lashes dense, apply two thin coats instead of one thick coat, and keep a dry time in between. Also, apply mascara in two different ways for each coat. The first coat, apply your mascara in a wiggly way, taking your brush from side to side, left and right; the second coat, apply your mascara from the roots of your lashes up till the tips of it, and wing your outer lashes out to the sides to give a cat-like, wide-eyed look.

Lips: As for Blush, it should ONLY be applied from the sides of your temples to the apples of your cheek. We wear blush to make us look fresh, flushed, natural, not like a clown having a pink ball on both sides of his face. Moderation is the key.

Don’t wear lipstick too light! There is a difference between nude and nude lips. If the lips are too white, it can wash you out completely and make you look pale and lifeless.

Brows: Brows are personal, each person likes to keep them the way they like and feel comfy with. So, I’m not going to judge you. But there are huge no’s to this. Do not over pluck, very thin brows makes you look older and don’t flatter the eyes. As long they are not too cartoon-ish and aren’t far away from your natural eyebrow shape, you are good to go. Fill them right, shape them right and I promise you it will make you 10 times prettier and complimenting to your face shape.

Eyeshadow: Blending of eyeshadows is the point. You don’t apply lines! Don’t leave any harsh lines. Blend blend blend! Brushes are an amazing investment if you got the right one. Invest in a good blending brush and I promise that you won’t need any other eyeshadow brushes.

Eyeliner: Eyeliner is made to frame your eyes. It looks best if you apply a small line on the top of your lids rather than drawing a thick line up and down your lash lines. Appling eyeliner to the outer corner of your lower lash line can make your eyes look pretty and April 2014 | 45

BY: Reham Khalifa

e all can’t wait for summer to come, but do you think you’re totally ready and prepared? Here are my tips for you to experience a glamorous summer, wearing the trendiest and hottest makeup for SS14, from bright orange to dramatic purple eye shadows!

Lipstick You have to pay attention to lipsticks, wearing bright colors like orange, hot pink, berry, neon is definitely in this season. Earthy and dark colors were trendy for winter, but SS14 is all about bright colors.

Tip: I know orange can be tricky, so choose the right

extending outside the corners of the edge, so spread your eye wings and glam. Liquid liners like blue, green, purple and of course black are going to be a hit in SS14, as we are looking for something really different and new. The most important thing to have is a long lasting gel eyeliner (try gel eyeliner by Mac).

color for your skin, wearing an orange lipstick will certainly get you a glamorous look, with just eyeliner and mascara. Leave your lip-glosses at home; as matte lipsticks are trendier this summer, and bright lipsticks have a fresh summery feel as it pops your face more.

Eyebrows

When it comes to eyeliner, this season they have gone graphic, thick bold lines, angular shapes and lines

The trendy shades this season are the bright colors; shades that brighten up your face like lavender, purple,

electric blue and pastel colors. If you think you look a little bit pale just add some eyeliner or mascara.

Tip: To make your eyes look bigger, apply a

white colored eye pencil to your lower eyelids, and underneath add some black eye shadow (try white eye pencil by Make Up Forever). If you want a classic vintage look, try using a dark red lipstick with black eye shadow or black eyeliner.

Base The most important trend for SS14 is the natural look. Make your face glow by using moisturizer to create a perfect base and for a fresh looking skin. For a glowing face, apply a bronzer on your cheeks and forehead.

Blushers This summer is all about golden brown tan; the tanned look is the key for summer. Give your face a gorgeous and radiant look by applying bronzer to your cheekbones and forehead, add a rosy peachy tone to your apple cheeks.

and so the idea of Fashion Garage was born; to have two departments, one for re-sell and one for brand new items from high-end stores. Most importantly, through out the preparations for our last bazaar event, I decided that Fashion Garage will not only be an online shopping store but also a fashion related company that hosts and organizes fashion events.

Heba Serag

The Woman behind Fashion Garage GIVE US A BRIEF ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND. I hold a BA in political science from AUC and an International Law degree from UCLA. I am an artist; a painter and a photographer. I did a lot of Fashion shoots for several prominent magazines. Being a fashion photographer sets you to appreciate and understand beauty and fashion by default. Recently, as a socialite and owner of Fashion Garage, I was chosen to appear as a judge on a Fashion related TV program on AlHayat Chanel. TELL US MORE ABOUT THE CONCEPT BEHIND FASHION GARAGE. HOW DID IT ALL START? I have always been obsessed with dresses and I am constantly purchasing them, even if I don’t wear them or even if I just wear them once. Like any other mother who wants to get rid of the endless piles of clothes that I have scattered around my bedroom; my mother suggested that I host a garage sale solely to sell my things 48 | April 2014

CHARITY IS NOT EXACTLY THE FIRST THING THAT COMES TO MIND WHEN YOU THINK OF FASHION. WHAT TRIGGERED THAT NOTION OF MIXING BOTH? My family has always been integrated with charity and raising funds, and I have always felt a sense of responsibility towards our community. And like you said, fashion and charity together is not the first thing that comes to mind, so why not change that! Why not become the first person to present this idea into our society. TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR CHARITY CONCEPT. WHERE OR WHO DO YOU DIRECT IT TO? We direct our donations to Lion Club and Hayati Association for women. BEING AN ENTREPRENEUR IN EGYPT IS NOT EASY. WHAT OBSTACLES HAVE YOU FACED WHILE WORKING ON THIS PROJECT? Sadly, some Egyptians still don’t know how to commit to their work and deadlines and they don’t give it their 100%. Also, society here is not very open to innovative ideas and brazen ones. HOW DO YOU PICTURE FASHION GARAGE FIVE YEARS FROM NOW? AND SO FAR, HAS IT SUCCESSFULLY CONVEYED THE MESSAGE YOU WANT TO DELIVER? I see it as a leading successful brand. I think that picture is slowly coming together, as I am constantly expanding our brand and creating new aspects to it, baby steps.

The Four W’s and the How of Accessorizing Your Home BY: Sally El Bardesy

WHAT ARE HOME ACCESSORIES? Home accessories are the main aspect of design, theme or idea of any place. Almost 90% of all houses, for example, have the same items from walls and ceilings to furniture and space. Only 20% of all houses may have different accessories! Home accessories are the bag, shoes, belt, shades and the watch of the house. Yes, it is not the rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Those are just part of accessories’ details. Some furniture is already designed with those details, so you needn’t any details to add, only accessories. Interesting, don’t you think? Home accessories hold everything from the curtains, carpets, wallpaper, lightings, runners and cushions to the vases, ashtrays, candles, frames, mirrors and statues. WHY TO ACCESSORIZE? Yes, that is an important question by the way. You need to know the aim behind home accessories. It’s not only a matter of the overall visual scene. Accessories do the whole scenario and script for the whole place and changing them makes a dramatic effect accordingly.

WHEN TO ACCESSORIZE? Almost 99% of people put it at the end of their list. That’s why it turns out to be more or less useless. Did you ever wonder why some TV series or movies are just so good that you keep watching them over and over again? On the other hand, there are movies that you would just chat on your mobile and only take a glimpse every couple of minutes. It’s all about the accessorizing. Directors present the story in sort of senses and shots. Every shot is directed from the camera’s point of view. Therefore, every color, light background, space movement, etc. is a kind of accessory. >> April 2014 | 53

That’s pretty much what you need to put in mind and imagine when you decorate your place. You need to bear in mind that this carpet you will use has a runner with a certain color on top of a table with a certain material to compete with or enhance. WHICH ACCESSORIES TO ADD? Well, this is the hardest part. This world is full of accessories and it’s getting tougher everyday. Unless you know exactly what you need, why you need it and how to place it, you’ll reach no end in this maze. To try and simplify it a bit, a must-have list should come first. Taking into consideration that you’ll definitely get the carpets, curtains, throws, cushions, lightings; therefore, you’ll need to get them as a second step.

The vases, frames, mirrors, paintings, candles, coasters, clocks and ashtrays are the must-haves. Usually, according to their design, you’ll know which to hang on walls and which to place on tables. HOW TO ACCESSORIZE YOUR PLACE? Now there are a lot of strategies, plans, and tips for this; however, the best and most effective should be as follows: After furnishing, painting the walls and installing main lights, accessories as curtains, carpets and cushions or throws will be your overlapping step, where you’ll actually put your ideas into a theme. These items will be your life savers as well. For example, if your furniture and walls turned out to be so dark or so pale, the curtain and the cushions would save that. Sometimes you just put things together and colors clash at the end, the carpets and cushions will then work as a common harmonic factor. Accessories such as lightings, mirrors and statues or complementary small furniture will need to be planned ahead along with each section. For example, the doorway entrance, a side table and a pouf will need to be planned well according to the size and space. Mostly, hanging a mirror in a certain place needs to be set at a suitable angle for a good lighting, but still to be safe enough not to break.

54 | April 2014

Now comes the small bits and pieces; the vases, candle, etc. Please, beware and strictly know that such accessories should be placed in certain defined places and not all over the place. Spots for accessories should be only for small walls or columns, shelves, corner tables (NOT middle lounge tables), buffets and back sofa tables. Finally, here comes the concept or the strategy behind putting what, where and how. Far spots or high-up ones like shelves or stairs will need big noticeable items. They should be big enough and not detail-oriented. Other spots as corner tables and shelves will need medium to small elements to place and you may go with details as you wish. Beware, placing objects should be either symmetrical or in a group form. For example, a two-flower vase at each side or one lampshade, plus an ashtray and a candle will do the look. One more thing you should know, accessories are there to either enhance the place, add to the details, for visual eye movement or to send a certain message. You don’t only accessorize according to colors and space. Bohemian accessories will twist the look of a contemporary living, while a group of plain bold colors will add a youth fresh effect to a modern space. Dark untraditional objects will show a sense of mystery and power to your guests. Classics are always a matter of taste and nostalgia.

Paintings and frames always set a mood, so take care. A well painted girl sitting alone by the sea always means a lonely bored life. Have fun accessorizing your place and don’t forget the more you give effort doing it, the more it gives back. April 2014 | 55

Breathtaking Gardens from Around the World

Keukenhof Garden, the Netherlands It’s Springtime, and what better way to celebrate it than in the midst of a heaven made of flowers. Keukenhof garden, the world’s largest flower garden, is also known as the Garden of Europe. It is located in an area called Dune and Bublb Region, where it is in South Holland in a small town called Lisse. According to the official website for the Keukenhof Park, approximately seven million flower bulbs are planted annually in the park, which covers an area of 32 hectares. You won’t only find one garden at the Keukenhof, but rather several and different ones too. For example, the English landscape garden with winding paths and unexpected seethrough points. There is a historical garden, an enclosed one where you can see many old types of bulbs. You can visit a nature garden, which consists of a water garden, where shrubs and perennials are combined with bulbous plants. And the Japanese country garden, a playful non-traditional garden in a natural environment. Keukenhof garden is open annually from mid-march to mid-may; however, the best time to view the tulips is around mid-April. Just in time for Spring break! 56 | April 2014

The Garden of Cosmic Speculation, Scotland This incredible garden, known as The Garden of Cosmic Speculation, is what true art by all means looks like. It’s like a museum and garden mixed together; it is based on mathematics and science mixed with nature and man-made lakes. It is a private garden built by Charles Jencks in 1989 and his late wife Maggie. Its design was influenced by Chinese garden philosophy. One of its main features is long snaking curves and waves that both satisfied the couple’s love for Chinese landscape painting and complemented the Scottish hills around them. Jencks makes use of one of the new scientific theories as well, the theory of complexity, which states that everything is “self organizing and harmonic.” >>

Butchart Gardens, Canada Million of visitors head to Butchart Gardens in Brentwood Bay, British Columbia, Canada each year. Not only does it have a group of floral display gardens, but ornamental birds from all over the world as well, such as parrots, ducks, and peacocks. Moreover, several bronze statues are displayed in the garden. Do not miss this chance to wander between nature.

Versailles Chateau Gardens, France France is one of the countries known for the beauty of its landscapes and museums. Something as simple as a walk in Paris makes you happy. If you’re heading to France this Spring break, then you must visit the Versailles Vast Chateau Gardens. They cover 800 hectares, and they are famed for their geometrically aligned terraces, tree-lined paths, ponds and canals. One of the most special aspects of the gardens is the 50 fountains which act as focal points, enhancing the geometrical design. From late spring to early autumn, the fountains come to life as part of the annual Grandes Eaux water spectacles. Garden highlights include the horses and chariot of the Apollo Fountain, the Grand Canal stretching off to the horizon, and the detailed parterres of the Orangerie. Wherever you stroll, you’re bound to come across a grove, colonnade, fountain or sculpture that will surprise, delight and take your breath away.

Villa Lante Garden, Italy This garden is well-known for its perfectly proportioned and richly detained designs: a square terrace subdivided into smaller squares, a water parterre, and a wonderful fountain in a central position. Many people view this garden as the absolute example of the best period in the history of garden design. Nevertheless, the geometry of Villa Lante Garden was inspired by the Belvedere at the Vatican; the use of water by the Villa d’Este; the circular island echoes Hadrian’s ‘marine theatre’ a Tivoli and the isolette at the Boboli. A grotto sits at the summit of the hill, from which flows water which is full of delight. Paths lead to an outdoor dining area with a fountain table, and then to other enclosures. The Water Chain is the best and earliest example of a stepping cascade. The Villa also has a park, now in some disrepair, which had the character of a hunting park, but is too small for a hunt. 58 | April 2014

Takinoue Park, Japan This park should be on each and everyone’s bucket list; it is a must-see! At last, flower season has come to Hokkaido. With its pink and purple flowers all over, Takinoue Park in Takinoue town, Hokkaido, Japan is the highlight of the spring. The flower field covers about 100,000 square meters of the hillside and draws quite the crowd every year. The best time to see the flowers is from mid-May through the beginning of June. Along the walkway, you can stop at the view post to admire all of the flowers, including some tulips. On Honshu, flowers bloom by type according to the season but in Hokkaido, they seem to all bloom at the same time. This flower collaboration makes for a really enjoyable view. People always look forward to Spring in Japan, and so should we! You don’t want to miss these flowers and the sweet smell that they bring to Takinoue. To enthusiast you more, the Shibazakura (Pink Moss) Festival, one of the most unique and colorful festivals on the Hokkaido flower calendar, occurs every first of May to early June.

Nong Nooch Garden, Thailand Each day over 2,000 tourists from all over the world visit Nong Nooch Garden. It is one of Thailand’s most popular attractions, where it is designed to look like a Thai village filled with botanical gardens and orchid nurseries. In addition to the garden itself, the Suan Nong Nooch Tropical Garden also features other attractions like traditional, cultural and elephant performances. The garden also features several touristfriendly amenities like swimming pool, halls, restaurants, villas, cottages and even houses. Due to its popularity, the garden is always improving so even return visitors will have a great time. Of course, the attraction stays true to its original goal – that is to educate the public about the importance of conserving the plants and flowers.

Dr. Lynne Weixel

My baby doesn’t smile very muchcould this be a sign there’s something wrong?

What can be causing my friend’s frequent vivid dreams and nightmares?

Doctor’s Answer:

Doctor’s Answer:

Maybe. Babies generally begin to intentionally smile between 6-8 weeks. Before this, they tend to smile mainly in their sleep. However, remember that babies develop at different rates and there is a wide range of normal. If you are concerned about your baby’s development, bring these concerns up to your pediatrician.

Dr. Maziar Rezvani

Allergy and Immunology

Do food allergies go away if one keeps eating same food over and over in small amounts? Doctor’s Answer: Be careful. There are currently no FDA-approved protocols for oral desensitization to any food. This is still an experimental topic and I would not suggest that you attempt such a procedure.

64 | April 2014

Many things can cause vivid dreams and nightmares. Recently, among the more common causes are medications. Read the warnings for side effects of any prescriptions being used to see if that is a known side effect. Other reasons might also be from things being ingested in some way.

Dr. Sean O Donovan

Is popcorn bad for the digestive system? Doctor’s Answer:

Diverticulosis/diverticulitis may be exacerbated by popcorn, although there is much argument about whether this is really true. The butter added is much worse for you, but there is nothing intrinsically bad about popcorn, but as in everything, moderation is appropriate.

Dr. Gregrory P. Harvey Orthopedic Surgery

Almost everytime I bend my knees, I hear a cracking noise, but with no pain. This has been going on for 4-5 years. I think I’m bow legged. What is causing this? Doctor’s Answer:

You most likely have some wear of the joint surfaces of your knee. This can be called arthritis or chondromalacia. As long as you don’t have pain or swelling there is nothing to do about the noise.

7

Dr. Eric S. Farbman Neurology

I have a bad headache. I get them atleast once or twice per week. They sometimes make me feel a little drowsy and nauseous, but I am never really sick? Doctor’s Answer:

Probably migraines. The most common cause for frequent headache in an otherwise healthy individual is migraine. Oftentimes these can cause nausea, light sensitivity, and fatigue. Although you might think that you are too young to get migraines, many patients have had them even younger than you. There are good treatments available; a neurologist should be able to help you.

Dr. Robert Kent

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

How many calories do you burn when you do 40 minutes on a stepper? Doctor’s Answer:

This depends on how much you weigh and the rate at which you were going. The average male would burn roughly 400-500 calories on a stair machine in an hour. The health benefits however do go far beyond just calories burned. This helps improve cardiovascular fitness, increase metabolism and muscle mass, and fights chronic diseases, including depression.

Tim Gunn Fashion Consultant

What’s the biggest mistake women make when getting dressed? Expert’s Answer:

The biggest mistake a woman can make, in my opinion, is trying too hard. Don’t wear name brand everything or try to layer on a million trends to the point where your outfit is screaming for attention. Whoever you’re meeting, eyes will become like a pingpong ball and they will have no idea where to look.

When Spring/Summer

B

right sunshine, clear air, moderate weather, blossoming flowers, getting ready for the sea, the beach, and even which tanning product you will use this season; that is what commonly comes to mind when Spring/Summer approaches, right? However, this is not the case with everyone, especially those suffering from Reverse Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)/Summer SAD. Why do seasonal changes have such impact on us? Journalist Stephanie Hegarty, from BBC World Service, in her article Reverse Sad: Why springtime can be bad for depression sufferers, referred to Harvard Psychiatrist, John Sharp on explaining this issue. Sharp classifies the impact that seasonal changes have into three main aspects. The first aspect is the physical aspect, which refers to factors such as, sunlight and heat that might physically affect a person’s body and alter body chemicals responsible for people’s feelings. The second aspect is culture/environmentrelated events that might also alter one’s mood, and finally the third aspect is that related to memories or anniversaries; i.e. if a certain time of the year reminds a person of a good/bad memory, it would normally have an effect on his/her mood. 66 | April 2014

Feeling down and depressed; it might be Reverse SAD SAD in general, according to Mayo Clinic definition, is a form of depression that keeps reoccurring to a patient on a yearly basis at the same time. It’s a seasonal disorder that is most regularly associated with Fall/Winter seasons, in which people feel down and depressed. However in some occasions, certain people get it the other way around, and they start feeling gloomy, and even suicidal, during spring and summer instead, and this is why it’s referred to as “Reverse.” What causes it? There are various views concerning the causes of Reverse SAD. Health Journalist Julie Penfold in her Depression Alliance online featured article titled Understanding Summer Sad, quotes Dr. Roger Henderson view on that issue stating that “The exact reason why summer SAD should be triggered remains unclear, though many researchers believe that the increased exposure to sunlight and rising temperature are key causes.” Penfold also adds that according to Henderson, there might be a genetic influence in some cases. Going with Henderson’s argument is Psychiatrist Dr. Norman E. Rosenthal in the New York Times article Seasonal Depression Can Accompany Summer Sun; in which it is stated that whether the trigger is the high temperature or the bright light, the exact reason

is your Worst Enemy...

is yet to be cleared. Other researchers, however, are more specific about what may cause summer SAD. Among those researchers is Professor Thomas Wehr, from the National Institute of Mental Health, as he singles out Thyroid hormone imbalance, which is caused by heat to be among the reasons for the lack of energy for some people during summer. Also, referring to the same article, some experts think that Reverse SAD is more of a psychological state rather than a physical one. Psychologist Dr. David Lewis argues that it’s somehow related to expectations; in other words, it’s generally expected that during spring and summer one has to be happy, so people just feel depressed when they don’t feel as happy, for whatever reason, as they are supposed to be, or like those around them. Consequently, they end up feeling like they are missing something. Watch out for its symptoms! People suffering from Reverse SAD report getting in a bad mood as summer approaches, as well as getting feelings of anxiety and a general sense of restlessness. Patients also commonly suffer from sleep problems that might reach insomnia in some cases. Moreover, increased sex drive is reported in certain cases. Loss of appetite during spring/summer is among the signs of having Reverse SAD as well, unlike winter SAD, which consequently ends up with people losing weight,

and having nutrition-related issues. Furthermore, referring back to Mayo Clinic, sometimes Reverse SAD accompanies people with bipolar disorder; in such cases, spring/summer triggers Mania episodes, hyperactivity, and elevated mood swings. Time for treatment In order to seek treatment, you have to pay attention to the symptoms, and don’t just over look them. In some cases, antidepressants might be subscribed by therapists; however, fortunately, there are other simpler precautions one can take to reduce the symptoms. On the one hand, if what triggers the symptoms is heat/light related then it’s all about staying hydrated, keeping the body cool, and trying to minimize exposure to sun. There are many options through which you can achieve that, such as frequent cold showers, going swimming, wearing shades and bright colors to reduce the heat, etc. On the other hand, if the symptoms are psychologically related, patients should try to get over the thoughts that bring them down. In her previously cited article, Penfold also sheds light on real cases of patients, where the patient states that controlling other stress factors in her life helped her with her case, and also setting fun plans to look forward to in summer helps her stay positive. In all cases, it’s better to reach out to a specialist, and there is absolutely no shame in that. April 2014 | 67

CHEEROBICS® Aerobics + Pompoms = Fat Burning Fun! BY: SAMIRA KHALIL About Cheerobics® Cheerobics® is the latest fitness program that combines aerobics and cheerleading. It is an exercise to a music fitness program with the unique characteristic of using cheerleading inspired moves and techniques, using pompoms! It’s a foremost cardiovascular training program with elements of muscular strength and endurance. With classes appearing in over 20 locations around the world, Cheerobics® started in Egypt in November 2013 by me, Samira Khalil. Cheerobics® is aimed to make cheerleading accessible to every woman regardless of her age, shape, skills and backgrounds, providing a new and colorful way of exercising to music. It’s the only cheerleading workout that is officially recognized as a fitness program. Besides shaking the pompoms and having loads of fun, you will be working your entire body. Cheerobics in Egypt I received my first group fitness instructor certificate in 2009, I didn’t want to be the typical group fitness instructor who would do a regular aerobics/step class. I wanted to be different, to add more fun to my classes; I always wished to be that person who would bring a smile on others’ faces. I had the idea of adding pompoms to my class, and planned on learning some basic cheerleading moves. The minute I searched online, BAM! I found Cheerobics! I fell in love with Cheerobics the minute I watched the video. I emailed the founder of 70 | April 2014

Cheerobics, Jessica Zoo, who was very cooperative. I waited for the study material, flied all the way to London to get a chance to meet her and attend the workshop. Honestly, it was one of the best decisions I have ever taken. The Class What differentiates Cheerobics from any other exercise involving music is that your motor skills are constantly challenged. Unlike any other aerobics class, Cheerobics’ arm motions are the most important technical element that links aerobics with

aspects of cheerleading. During the one hour class Cheerobics targets your cardiovascular fitness, muscle endurance, muscle strength and flexibility, and of course the fun part of cheering! Cheerobics Junior I am planning on having Cheerobics Junior in the near future (Children Aged 4-11 years). Cheerobics Junior is a fitness class for children to improve their fitness levels, motor skills, coordination and confidence in a fun environment.

“

It is never too late to shake your pompoms and have some FUN!

Why Eat This? Herring… Easter’s Favorite Tradition

• Herring is packed with minerals important for skeletal health. It provides you with calcium, magnesium and phosphorus - three nutrients that your body uses to make hydroxyapatite, the mineral complex that makes up your teeth and bones. • A 6-ounce serving of herring contains 141 milligrams of calcium and 388 milligrams of phosphorus, supplying 14% of your recommended daily calcium and 55% of your phosphorus needs. • Eat herring to nourish your nervous system. Each serving offers 2.8 grams of DHA and EPA -- two types of omega-3 fatty acids. Your body uses omega-3s to promote healthy brain function, and low omega-3 fatty acid levels might increase your risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Super Food...

Artichokes • The cyanic properties in the artichoke help the body to excrete bad cholesterol and assist in balanced cholesterol levels that help those with high cholesterol. So it can help prevent some kinds of heart disease. • Artichokes have more antioxidants than any other vegetable. Some of the powerful antioxidants in artichokes are quercertin, rutin, anthocyanins, cynarin, luteolin, and silymarin. • They induce apoptosis (cell death) and reduce cell proliferation in many different forms of cancer, including prostate cancer, leukemia, and breast cancer. A diet rich in flavanoids present in artichokes reduces 72 | April 2014

the risk of breast cancer. • Thanks to cynarin and another antioxidant, silymarin, artichokes are very beneficial to the liver. Studies have found they may even regenerate liver tissue. Artichokes have long been used in folk and alternative medicine as a treatment for liver ailments. • Artichokes help the digestive system. They are a natural diuretic, they aid digestion, improve gallbladder function. • Artichoke can help balance blood glucose levels and help deal with diabetes. Foods on this side of the glycemic index are often prescribed for patients dealing with a blood sugar imbalance.

• Making herring a part of your diet keeps your red blood cells healthy. Red blood cells require hemoglobin; a protein containing chemical complexes, called heme groups -- to function because hemoglobin binds to oxygen so that the cells can transport it throughout your body. Both the iron and vitamin B-12 found in each serving of herring help you make this hemoglobin. • Each 6-ounce portion of herring offers 28 grams of protein as well as 1.9 milligrams of iron and 17 micrograms of vitamin B-12. This makes up your entire daily vitamin B-12 intake requirement, along with 24% and 11% of the daily recommended iron intakes for men and women, respectively.

What are the best foods to eat when you have diarrhea? Banana, Rice, Apples, Yogurt and Jelly

Improve your memory!

Fix with Food

Your brain doesn’t just have neurons, but also neurotransmitters, which are messengers that bring brain signals from one neuron to the next one. Some parts of the neurotransmitters, like the tryptophan, are not able to be made by your body. Thus, you must consume food to get them. The greatest sources of food to boost your alertness, concentration, and energy are dairy products, eggs, seafood and soy. Water is crucial for your memory. You already know that your body is made mostly of water. And you also know how easy it is to not consume much water and become dehydrated. Even a mild case of dehydration can reduce your mental energy.

Your Diet Manual During LENT FASTING BY: NOURA HASSABALLA During Easter lent, Christians change their diets; given that it’s the period of abstaining from certain foods. Many find it hard to make healthy food choices since they have to give up mainly proteins coming from animal sources and dairy products. Usually they get stuck with the same type of food every day. Since they refrain from animal proteins, which give the feeling of satiety, they tend to focus more on high-carbs and fried foods, which cause them to gain weight. Moreover, they don’t get the adequate amounts of fibers, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Now, it’s much easier than before to be able to have a variety of food, including vegetarian proteins, tofu, soy milk, quinoa, almond milk, rice milk, etc… Here are some options on how to eat during Lent, without missing out on any of your essential nutrients: BREAKFAST Soy milk + All bran cereal Or Almond Milk + Granola bar Or Whole wheat bread + Beans + Salad Or Fresh Fruit Salad (Small Bowl) SNACK It can be any low glycemic index fruit that has slow impact on blood sugar level, like grapefruit, cherries, pears, apples, etc. Vegetables can make a very good healthy snack as well, in addition to low-carb cereal bars, or a fresh fruit smoothie. LUNCH Quinoa salad (contains the 9 essential amino acids) Or Tuna Salad Or Barley + any type of your favorite legumes Or Fish and steamed/grilled vegetables Or Stir-fry vegetables with whole-wheat noodles Or Vegetarian Burger with cereal bread DINNER Tomato soup with tofu Or Lentil soup Or Grilled sweet potatoes with salad Or Vegetarian maki Or Grilled or smoked salmon with steamed asparagus

With the options mentioned above, you will still have a wide range of foods to choose from, without gaining weight or causing your blood cholesterol to skyrocket. Finally, keep in mind that you have to control your portion sizes especially when it comes to eating carbs. April 2014 | 73

Welcome to the Middle East’s First Green Kitchen

W

BY: YOSRA SHOHAYEB

hat is your most concern when you dine out? Probably many, varying from hygiene concerns to nutrition concerns. But what if I can guarantee you that from now on at Marriott Cairo Hotel you can eat food that is completely healthy and delicious, produced by a whole eco-friendly kitchen aka green kitchen. Would you believe me? Is there such a thing in Egypt? Yes, there is and it is right near you at Marriott Cairo Hotel. Let me take you on a journey inside the Middle East’s first green kitchen to believe it yourself. So what is the difference between a green kitchen and an ordinary kitchen? There are many differences which we will shed light on here, but the most important one is that the green kitchen serves 100% safe food, whereas the chance of the customer getting poisoned, complaining of a dish due to bacteria, or otherwise is almost impossible. In addition, the environment of a green kitchen is completely different; it is healthier for both the staff and customers, faster, and easier. Everything is different inside a green kitchen from the equipment and water usage to the food and even the floor. Their refrigerators have an ultra-violet lighting system, which helps prevent bacterial growth inside of it. They have different refrigerators for different kinds of foods and drinks in order to avoid cross-contamination. Moreover, all of the refrigerators’ pipes are outside the kitchen to protect the food in case any leakage happens. As for the floor, there is a heater under the floor to defrost, which prevents the formation of ice on the floor in case the refrigerator temperature reduced. All equipments used are high capacity modern ecofriendly ones designed for different usages from food washing and cleaning machines, to food grinding and air frying machines. All of their equipments’ spare parts are sterilized after usage and put in a suitable temperature level, in order to avoid any bacterial growth. Not only that, but they have a machine as well that washes every two hours the drain, which prevents pollution or insects from taking place inside of the kitchen. Nevertheless, they use lava stones instead of coal, which is healthier and gives the same barbeque taste.

Because it is a green kitchen, all light bulbs are lit, which saves a huge amount of energy. Their water on the other side is soft water, which is filtered before using. All their food is purchased from local green houses after inspection, and is free from any chemicals. Not only does Marriott’s kitchen take care of its own environment, but the outside atmosphere as well. According to Badawy Abdel Hamid, Marriott Cairo Hotel’s dir of culinary-executive chef, this kitchen is the only kitchen in Egypt that doesn’t have a chimney, which protects the outside atmosphere, but rather we have modernized equipment that work as a substitute for the chimney. Last but not least, in order to be ensured the healthiest culinary experience, all highly trained staff use antibacterial soap, and all kitchen utensils are sterilized day by day.

And you Wonder Why He Left You?

H

BY: NOHA KANDIL

ow many men have you heard weeping over a woman? One, two, maximum three maybe? Now ask yourself, how many women have you seen gone out of breath (and in some cases turned suicidal), because of all the tears they shed over men, who supposedly “broke their hearts?” Are you done counting? Need more time? Well, the truth is that in many of those cases, WOMEN BREAK THEIR OWN HEARTS. Yes they do! And no, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t some cold-blooded men out there, who are nothing more than a pure waste of oxygen and space. Yet, women play a big role in allowing their hearts to get broken, and this is why: 76 | April 2014

The not-so-special someone From the very beginning, many women are obsessed with the idea of finding the “special someone,” or even just the one, without the “special” part. The question here is what really defines the ONE? Is he the one taller than you? Is he the one with the nice smile and straight white teeth? Or is he the funny cute one? Obviously it differs, but the real problem occurs when women overlook the traits that would literally make or break a relationship. They often get super excited about finally finding that “special” man that they get stuck in the moment, and forget about the future. What they should be asking themselves instead is; would he still be loveable when he loses his temper

Is it worth it to lose a perfectly decent guy just because you can’t get pass all the materialistic stuff you want? If yes, then congratulations, HE IS GOING TO LEAVE YOU. Thank you for NOT loving me back Sadly, this one is quite common. You’ll see this beautiful woman getting out of her ways trying to please her man, and not because he earns it, GOD forbids! It’s disappointedly because he’s not treating her well, and she feels that he might be losing interest in their relationship, so instead of talking about it, and walking away with dignity; for some women, the “logical” thing to do, fascinatingly, becomes making more effort to please him. The truth is that giving more won’t necessarily get your relationship back, but it might actually push him away further. NEEDY IS NOT SEXY! You’re not an object, so stop treating yourself like one, and most importantly, don’t you ever accept it to be treated like one, but if you do, then congratulations, HE IS GOING TO LEAVE YOU. Who needs a friend, when you got a BOYfriend? If you are among the very few women, who end up with their best friend, then LUCKY YOU! Other than that, your boyfriend will never replace your friends. Think about it, does it make any sense to complain about your boyfriend to your boyfriend? It’s not even fun. Not to forget, the daily whining about your weight and having nothing to wear, and the “should I get this red dress or this other EXACTLY SAME red dress?” type of questions. So, if you think your man will solely put up with all that nagging for eternity, then congratulations, HE IS GOING TO LEAVE YOU. or caught cheating? And is a charming smile worth getting dumped for, because he is too afraid to commit? If yes, and you miss those signs, then congratulations, HE IS GOING TO LEAVE YOU. You are the air I breathe, the light I see, the CAR I DRIVE! To all the gold diggers out there, this one is for you. Okay, you may have some sort of feelings for the guy, but is it truly love? And if so, do you feel that love towards him or rather towards his loaded wallet? Every woman needs to be pampered by her man, that is a fact, and yes, pampering needs money, but what is also a fact is that there is a huge difference between getting pampered and feeding on the soul of the poor guy. It’s fine to go out to a fine dine restaurant, but does it have to be every week? And do you have to show off and bring your friends, AND make him pay?

Put a ring on it GOD DAMN IT! There is nothing wrong in wanting to settle down, and start a family; who wouldn’t want that? However, if a woman invests too much focus on the idea of marriage, or to put it more accurately, get distracted by the idea of marriage rather than focusing on assessing the relationship as a whole, then she will most probably end up with someone she doesn’t even know. It’s good to set the record straight from the start, and show that you want something serious out of this relationship, but you need to keep in mind that the man you’re getting involved with might not be exactly there yet; that doesn’t mean he is not committed to you, but it’s just that he needs some time. However, if you are in such hurry and can’t possibly wait, then congratulations, HE IS GOING TO LEAVE YOU. So ladies, please save your hearts and get your brains beating for a change… April 2014 | 77

Bettina Knows Best…

Will your Ex Ever Change his Ways?

I

Dear Bettina,

have been very confused lately. Just when I thought I have forgotten about my ex-boyfriend, I saw him and now we are texting again. I left my boyfriend because he wasn’t willing to change at all; he was unsupportive, always criticized my ways in front of people, made fun of me, etc. Sometimes he was loving, but it never seemed to be enough to cover his ways. I threatened to leave him two times before, where he swore at each time that he would change. However, the third time I decided I had enough and left him. I have been hearing around that he has changed, and I felt it too when we bumped into each other. However, I am scared that if I got back with him, he would still be the same, even worse, what if it shows again on the long run?

BY: BETTINA HEMMINGSEN

Sincerely,

Confused

Dear Confused, In a long-term relationship, you will discover many layers of the person you love. It is usually the top layer we fall in love with, and then when the other less attractive layers start to surface we begin to question our initial feelings. We usually have so many expectations to each other that we fail to realize that we are not having a relationship with our partner but with our expectations -which all comes down to not accepting the reality as it is. The inner dialogue you are experiencing is the familiar voice inside us, which always makes us doubt our disposition. But my feeling is that the voice that was telling you to leave your ex-boyfriend -was your intuition ,which origin from some place deeper than the superficial thought-chatter. Once you become aware of the different origin and nature of these voices, you can begin to observe the different feelings that arise simultaneously without judging or identifying with them. This little practice will help you understand the way your mind work and how all the chatter creates a lot of confusion, doubt, fear, anxiety and mistrust. Always remember the only one you can change is yourself, don´t try to change your partner.

Warm regards, Bettina

Mother & Child

SAVE YOUR MONEY PAPA, WE’RE STAYING IN!

I

t’s Easter time! Congratulations, you made it out of winter gloom, but you have to buckle up, because you’re about to go on a trip down “TAKE US OUT,” “WHY DON’T YOU WANT TO TAKE US THERE,” and “YOU ARE THE WORST PARENT EVER, I HATE YOU!” lane. Yes, it’s that bubbly spring season again, and NO, you can’t get away with the “but sweetie, they said it’s going to rain” excuse. It is a yearly transition routine that families go through, but the real problem occurs when parents can’t take their kids out for whatever reason, or when they can’t afford making travelling plans; that’s when it could turn to a real nightmare. However, the good news here is that there are other alternatives that you can go with in order to make it more fun for your kids at home.

Movie Night It’s not just about picking a good movie, but it’s rather about bringing the whole experience to your kids. Set the date, the hour, and to make it more real, pick a showtime like that at movie theatres (12:00-3:00 pm, 3:00-6:00 pm, etc.); after picking the time, you have to get the snacks ready. Chips, chocolates, and all sorts of candies that you can easily pick from the store next door, or simply ask for home delivery from the accessible Metro Market near you. And don’t forget to get that delicious flavored popcorn. Then finally, for the movie, try to pick a one that YOU will actually enjoy watching, not just the kids. Children love it when they see their parents sharing the same interests with them, without faking it (they can feel it). If you can’t find a clean G-Rated motion picture, you can always go for animated ones; you’ll be surprised by how fun they could be. You can get the latest movies online, but for a high definition picture, you can get the latest DVDs released from virgin Megastore. What’s left now is to lay back, dim the light and ENJOY!

Kitchen Fun Get your kids into the kitchen and get ready for some serious fun. Again, it’s all about giving them the whole experience, so instead of going out for a meal, bring the restaurant home. First, gather around the day before, and put a menu together with some easy recipes that you and your kids can do together. And in case you have nothing in mind, here is what we think would make up a fun menu: 80 | April 2014

Two-Tone Sandwiches: White and brown slices of bread. Letter shaped cookie cutter, and a bit larger one for the heart shape. Cut out the centers of the slices of the bread using the cutters, and then swap the center cutouts. Mini Flatbread Pizza: mini flatbread/sandwich thin, pesto sauce, shredded cheese and tomatoes. For a crispy crust, bake it for 10 minutes at 350° directly in the oven, without baking sheet.

Funny Face Sandwich: Sandwich roll/toast, cold cuts, Ketchup/mayonnaise, raw vegetables, olives, carrots, cheese sticks, and basically any other edible ingredient you can think of. For creating the face, you can use sliced raw vegetables and olives for features, and a cream cheese as glue.

All-Day Games Dress Ups! And no, not in princess and cowboys costumes, but rather in your own wardrobe outfits. Allow your kids to dress up like you for a day; let your little girl get in these oversized heels, blouse, and over the top clownlike makeup, and let your boy wear your suit and tie, with those classic shoes. To make it even more fun, ask them to impersonate you. The way you talk, the way you walk, and even how you discipline them. This won’t just generate a lot of laughs, but might actually help you understand how your kids see you, and allow you to value your communication techniques.

Fluffy Pancakes: 1 cup milk, 1 cup of flour, 2 tablespoons of white sugar, 2 teaspoons of baking powder, ½ teaspoon of salt, 1 large egg, 2 tablespoons of melted butter or vegetable oil, 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil, toppings (butter, jam chocolate, etc.) and cooking spray. Bowls, Spatula and a large pan, are the tools needed.

Puzzles Now that the whole family most probably out of breath, it’s time for some round table fun. Get a set of puzzles that the whole family can collaborate together to do. There are those 1000- piece puzzles that you won’t stand a chance against, unless the whole family work together, and although it’s doubtful that you end it in one night, it still a very good way for some serious family bonding.

And Pause! Kids just love to jump up and down, and go crazy, and what’s a better way to do that than through music. Get a CD ready with some fun beats that the whole family can enjoy. Get the whole family in one area, turn the music on for a while, and then pause all of sudden, and those who are dancing are supposed to freeze at the same pause till the music is back on. Every round the winner gets to control the music button. So turn the music up, and start dancing! Treasure Hunt To wrap up the day, hide some teeny-tiny surprises around the house for the kids to search for and find before they go to bed. Just give it a little thought before getting anything, it doesn’t have to be big, but focus on what would really make them happy.

T

his agreement is entered into by and between Egyptian women as represented by Sekina (hereinafter referred to as the wife) and Egyptian men as represented by Abbass (hereinafter referred to as the husband).

Whereas; the parties wish to enter into a marital contract, the parties herein: 1. Acknowledge that they enter into this contract on equal footing, each of their own free will. 2. Agree that any decision by the wife to be a stay at home mom should be considered a sacrifice. For the avoidance of doubt, such decision should not and cannot be used against the wife at any point in the future. The husband acknowledges that being a stay at home mom entails the following: • Being on call 24/7. • Not having the ability to delay a task, or take that business call later, or pretend to be in a meeting. • Not having the flexibility to go to the gym after work, and consider it part of a long, and hectic day. 3. The parties agree that while the husband generates a steady stream of income, the wife’s stay at home role is invaluable to the sustainability of the marital venture. For the avoidance of doubt, the husband acknowledges the wife’s ability to get a job, and generate income. The parties agree that the wife’s earning ability should be quantified by the following formula: Notional earning ability: AI × (1+30%)^n Whereby: • AI represents annual income at last paying job. • N represents number of years spent out of the workforce and in the service of the family. • The 30% annual factor serves to quantify: * Opportunity cost of foregone promotions, salary increases, per diems, and business trips. * Sleepless nights taking care of teething, insomniac or sick children- children who the husband acknowledges were a joint venture, and NOT a sole proprietorship. 82 | April 2014

* Irreparable damage to the wife’s physique on account of pregnancy, lactation, and other joys of motherhood. * Nights spent revising history tests while husband works hard at consolidating his lead in the playstation league. * Other factors to be listed in schedule A of this agreement. The parties agree that the annual factor is to be doubled in the case of twins and tripled in the case of triplets. The husband forgoes all rights in case number of children exceeds three. Family Account: In consideration of the wife’s job as a cornerstone of the family, the annual income is to be deposited in a joint interest earning account to which the wife has joint signature. The parties acknowledge the need for full time domestic help. Termination: The parties agree that they each have the right to unilaterally terminate this agreement. In case of termination by the husband, the wife is entitled to 50% of the money in the family account, as well as 50% of family assets. Confidentiality: The parties agree that the terms of this agreement should not be kept confidential. Each party agrees to endeavor on a best effort basis to promulgate the terms of this agreement to the best of their ability. Diamonds are April’s Born Best Friends BY: NIVINE MUKHTAR

T

hose who are born in April are the luckiest, as their birthstone is the sheer symbol of love, beauty, rarity and romance which is Diamond. Diamond started its journey billions of years ago deep inside the earth, where carbon, the only element forming it was exposed to extreme pressure and heat, transforming it to fascinating minerals. The volcanic activity of centuries ago delivered these diamond crystals to the earth’s surface. The word Diamond is derived from the Greek word “Adamas,” which means unconquerable. “Only diamonds can cut diamonds;” have you ever wondered what the secret behind that is? Diamonds are the hardest natural substance or mineral on earth, which means it can scratch anything but can be scratched only from another diamond. Many myths and legends surrounded the diamond in different cultures. The ancient Greeks and Romans believed diamonds were tears of the gods and splinters from falling stars. Roman literature stated that Cupid’s irresistible arrows were tipped with diamonds. The Greek philosopher Plato wrote about diamonds as living beings, embodying celestial spirits. The Hindus believed that diamonds were created when bolts of lightning struck rocks. They even placed diamonds in the eyes of some of their statues. Diamond value, quality, durability and appearance 84 | April 2014

depend on many characteristics. The most important ones are called the four Cs which are diamond’s cut, color, clarity and carat weight. Modern gemstones cutting techniques started to improve from the 16th Century that helped to reveal the beauty of the diamond. Prior to this time, it was considered taboo to change the natural state of a diamond. Nowadays the beauty of the diamond depends to a great extent on how skillfully it is cut and polished. The beauty of diamonds lies in its wonderful optical properties, which means simply its stunning ability to sparkle and to react with light compared to other gemstones. A traditional color is associated with diamond as April birthstone is white or near colorless, although diamond comes in every color of the rainbow. Naturally colored diamonds are called fancy diamonds, but they are rare and very expensive. Diamonds are thought to have been first mined in India since at least 400 B.C. Today the main diamond producing countries are Russia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Australia, Botswana, South Africa, Canada, Angola and Namibia. Diamonds are unique just as their wearers; actually no two diamonds are the same. Diamond jewelry can match any outfit from casual to formal events.

The Best, The Top & the must do

must try Kempinski Nile Hotel, Signature Dish-Roasted Quail Since the ancient times of the Pharaohs, quail has been considered the most famous food in Egypt along with pigeons. The Egyptians realized quite early that quail is a brilliant source of protein for their workers, supplying them with energy to help them build the magnificent temples 7000 years ago, so large farms were established for breeding them. It is still a well known tradition and custom in Egypt that an Egyptian groom should eat quail and pigeons for virility on his wedding night, hence our choice for Kempinski Nile Hotel’s signature dish: Boneless quail stuffed with morel and local mushrooms, sautéed herbs with onion, covered with local lamb fat, served with sweet peas, crushed chickpeas and carmalised carrots.

Aries Fashion Sense By far, the favorite color of an Aries is red. However, due to their outgoing personality and fiery disposition, this is probably not a surprise. Whether they use red to accent an outfit or wear an entire style with red, it is not uncommon to find the color in their wardrobe. They are also often seen in black and white. You’ll catch them wearing hats and head accessories–the bolder and more original the better! Aries Hairstyle Aries women see hair styles as something to do. Therefore, they will try out all interesting things to get them to express their identity by large. They may go from long luscious hair to chopped short hair like the guys. These women may also add tons of jewels in their hair as well. Aries women will wear their hair slick back in a pony tail or wrap it around in a bun. On the other hand, other days they may wear it out and relaxed. What’s it like to date an Aries woman An Aries is hot-blooded, and forceful, so you had better be able to handle the heat! The Aries woman is for the person who likes an independent self-driven woman who can fend for herself and is not clingy and needy. An Aries woman requires freedom. For the Aries woman, the best part of the relationship is the beginning, then the spark is there and she is trying to catch you to be hers. She will find happiness in a long-term relationship because she enjoys sharing everything with her partner. She will not only have a romantic partner but a best friend too. She considers her partner to be equal. What’s it like to date an Aries man An Aries man has a lust for adventure so if you are thinking about having a relationship with an Aries man; be prepared for excitement. He is always eager to try new things - including relationships. That is not to say that every Aries man will only provide an exciting and short-lived relationship, but this is usually the case. He might stick around if you are the type of woman that enjoys having the man take the lead and basking in his glory. He enjoys challenge, so if you are the woman to offer challenges to him - like playing hard to get - he might stick around longer. Aries Erogenous Zone The head is Aries’ most powerful erogenous zone. Stroking their hair and rubbing their scalp will make them feel relaxed and heighten their sensations. Nibble the ear, for especially the men, they will not be able to resist this; he will get uncontrollable urges and you will soon be all his. 88 | April 2014

Mr. Mounir Fakhri Abdel-Nour, Minister of Trade and Industry, went to a visit to France, accompanied by the Egyptian side of the French Egyptian Business Council after its re-composition. The importance of this visit lies in the fact that it is the first official Egyptian delegation to Paris after the adoption of a new constitution for Egypt. During the visit, the Minister of Trade and Industry held a series of meetings with French officials, including Minister of Foreign Trade, Nicole Bricq, and the Minister of Industrial Renewal, Arnaud Monteboug, as well as meetings with officials and members of “MEDEF”, which is the largest business organization in France, and a number of senior French businessmen, among them Bruno Lafont, Chairman of the Group “Lafarge.” Moreover, the Minister of Trade and Industry collaborated in the first session of the French Egyptian Business Council, after the re-composition of the Egyptian side recently, which aims to promote mutual cooperation, especially in the sectors of mining, energy, automotive and agricultural industries. French companies were, as other companies, affected by the events that took place in Egypt mainly the deterioration of the security situation, factional demands and strikes done by workers. In spite of all these conditions, those companies still continued to work in Egypt and some even expanded their operations. Economically, France is one of the most important trade partners of Egypt, with trade in 2012 reaching a range of Euros 2.9 billion, of which Egyptian exports are worth Euros 1.2 billion. The Egyptian side of the Business Council is seeking to play an important and pivotal role in accelerating the development of trade relations between Egypt and France, that’s why, the Council has set a target for this year to rebuild the confidence of French companies in the Egyptian economy. The importance of the visit at this time is to convey the true picture about the political and economic situation in Egypt, especially to the business community, and this is very important because of France’s strong political and economic position in Europe, and its influential role in the process of decision-making in the EU.
