For the better Physically, you’re just one person, of course, with one head and one heart. But think about yourself through time and suddenly it looks like “there are many versions of you” There was you as an untroubled care free child, as a high school Goth, the young person with supreme confidence, the confused and dispirited twenty-something, and so on. Details differ among individuals, but take a long enough perspective look and most of us have the uncanny experience of feeling our unitary identity splinter into several very distinct personas. This experience can sometimes be good for forgiving ourselves for past faults. “That was in a different lifetime,” we say of early slipups, but it can also be put to use to improve our current decision-making. GRATITUDE can turn a negative into a positive. Find a way to be thankful for your troubles and they can become your blessings.

Happy New you!

Jourdan Dunn And Naomi Campbell Cuddle Up For New Burberry Campaign

J

ust when you thought no Burberry ad could get more iconic than Kate Moss and Cara Delevingne, Burberry has gone and paired together Naomi Campbell and Jourdann Dunn. The British retailer, who obviously has one of the better casting agents in the industry, recruited Mario Testino for the occasion and, looking at the images, you’ll get a sense of why he’s one of the most famous fashion photographers.

12 | January 2015

The ad series slays. Not only are Naomi and Jourdan giving their fiercest looks, despite the 20 years between them--eternal youth elixir drinker Naomi is 44 while Jourdan is 24—they look more like sisters than a mom and daughter January 2015 | 13

2015 Wardrobe Resolutions BY: Ghadir Al agabany

Shop the Essentials & Buy Smart

Spend the least money on shopping for the most fashionable items that come and go frequently, crazy colours, bizarre styles, funky outfits and fads that don’t last more than a season. However you can spend a fortune on basics that will not go out of fashion soon. Essential basics start from white collar shirts, black classic-cut trousers, denims, black stilettos, designer bags, black leather jacket and another that’s chic and fitted. So to shop smart, you need to have a strategy, a plan consisting of your needs, minimum available budget, good pre-purchase research, attentively watch for magnificent sale bargains and then follow your own individual style and buy. Remember, if you work hard on your styling abilities, you will still be able to impress for less.

Improve Your Styling Skills

The fast, easiest and most efficient way is to hire a personal shopper/stylist. Yes they are available in Egypt and not only for stars and celebrities. Other methods could include reading many various selected fashion magazines, analysing trend publications, reviewing boutique merchandised window vitrines, following trending street styles or now you could even just simply attend saavy stylish sessions and events!!! 26 | January 2015

Comfy & Cool

Make use of it, it’s the years of comfy fashion. Wedges, sneakers, boyfriend jeans, loose collar shirts, denim shirts, A-Line dresses, full pleated skirts and flair pants. The bohomean 70s look mixed with the 50s avantgarde touches definitely will be a lending hand in the coming years. Advantages of wearing comfortable and loose items is beneficial specially when you’re travelling, working or all day running errands and must still look fab. BUT BE-AWARE; always wearing too much comfy clothes might lead to weight gain due to undefined body shape and not seeing the changes in your body contour.

Colour Your Life

Colour your wardrobe up with vibrant tones & prints and take my word for this, it will gradually colour your life, lift your mood and boost your ego. When orange means social communiqué and optimism, blue is trust and peace while green represents balance, then you’ll know the mood of your surroundings and yourself for better communication, bonding and relating. >>

January 2015 | 27

Accessorize to the Next Level

Next level means next level. Go Go Go, accessorize big time. This will make any outfit look fabulous. Never ever underestimate the super power of accessories when complimenting a look. As a matter of fact, sometimes you could even select a centrepiece accessory and then decide what you want to wear with it.

Flatter Your Body & Feel Good

Not everyone should wear anything they want. Well yes they absolutely can, but I mean, everyone should wear what looks great on them or at least what they feel looks good on them. The same exact outfit could look absolutely different on two different people. Therefore, you should acknowledge the fact that your body shape is different from other body shapes, your height, your weight and your sizes will automatically change the look of the outfit. For instance, if you’re very tall with broad shoulders, don’t wear power puffed sleeves, or if you’re an apple shape don’t wear textured balloon skirts. This is the year I will get fit or get fat!!!

Diddy punches Drake in the face!

There sure have been a lot of rumors about this, but here’s what we know so far. Diddy and Drake reportedly got into a fight early Monday morning outside of LIV nightclub in Miami, Florida. At first we were hearing that Diddy punched Drake in the face because of a feud over a lady…but, now it seems as though love had nothing to do with the altercation because the rappers were actually yelling over a money dispute. According to witnesses at the club, Diddy told Drake to never disrespect him, and then promptly clocked him. If they want to take their rivalry to a violent level, that’s their own decision, but we’re pretty sure they’re both rich enough to not be getting into fights over money.

Nick Cannon Confirms It’s Over Between Him & Mariah Carey! Well, we can’t say we’re surprised! While it’s common knowledge that Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey’s marriage ended back in August, Nick revealed the two are officially separated during a Monday morning chat with Good Morning America host, Lara Spencer. Considering the 34-year-old was at GMA to promote his Christmas book, Roc and Roe’s 12 Days of Christmas, based on Monroe and Morocco, we believe he’s sincere about keeping his family together no matter what!

Stevie Wonder got his Christmas present early!

The 64-year-old legendary musician welcomed his ninth child, and second child with girlfriend Tomeeka Robyn Bracy, a baby girl named Nia. The soul singer has eight children with five different women. His children range in age from 12 months to 39 years. And while Wonder may have debunked the triplet reports, the musician did reveal that he was preparing to grow his family.

What should i expect on my wedding night and first time sex?

Why are condoms better than birth control pills?

Before marriage, you have to discuss family planning with your partner. Do a premarital check-up, visit a gynecologist, and read books together. Also, a dental check-up is very important so that you both make sure that your breath is pleasant. Be ready with towels, tissues and perhaps lubricant lotion next to your bed. Do not expect to land on the moon in the wedding night! You both will be exhausted after a long wedding day, and a full sexual intercourse will probably have to wait for another day. Remember to breath deeply whenever you feel confused or anxious. Explore each other’s bodies with your senses.

Condoms are mechanical means to prevent pregnancy, while birth control pills are hormonal methods. They work in different ways. Many people consider condoms as better means to use due to the following reasons: • Condoms are used only during sexual intercourse and do not require an extra effort to remember using them every day like the pills. • Condoms do not affect the hormones of the woman or her feelings. • Condoms do not cause pain during sexual intercourse when used properly. • Condoms are suitable for the breastfeeding mother. • Condoms prevent pregnancy by 98% when used properly. • Condoms do not affect the woman’s fertility. • In some cases, condoms help delay premature ejaculation. • They prevent the transmission of most sexually transmitted diseases.

How do I make my wife enjoy our intercourse session and orgasm fast? The most important thing is patience, and knowing the erogenous zones outside as well as the inside the vagina. Remember that the most sensual point in a woman’s body is the clitoris, which is located outside of the vagina, and usually cannot be stimulated by contact with the penis only. It often requires the use of the mouth and fingers for ultimate pleasure. If the wife is circumcised, you can particularly try to stimulate her body at the breast area and between the thighs, or wherever she likes on her body. Start the foreplay, which includes kissing, hugging, and oral sex.

How do I make my husband more excited during our intercourse?

How do I communicate with my husband concerning my sexual needs?

The first and most important thing you must be consistent with, is to always pay attention to your personal hygiene. Choose a body fragrance that is as light as possible; strong perfumes turn men off. Men love encouragement and praise. Also, try to change locations and positions of sexual intercourse. Men also like receiving light massage on the testicles during the penetration process. I repeat, very gently. You can also press with the back of your fingers on the perineum (the area between the penis and the anus); something that causes stimulation to the internal part of the penis as well as the prostate, which will leave the husband feeling extra pleasure. During full penetration; you can try squeezing your pelvic floor muscles several times (Kegel exercise). Finally, the use of lubricants can facilitate the experience and make it more enjoyable for some couples.

Communication between couples to talk about sex is one of the most difficult aspects of the marriage in the eastern cultures. In order for the husband to please his wife, he needs to hear from her what she likes and what makes her enjoy sex. The woman can start finding out what makes her happy while exploring her own body by touching her own erogenous zones. You must speak with your husband about your wishes and concerns, using a positive and encouraging approach. Not talking about the subject will certainly lead to the failure of this important aspect of marriage. So, do not hesitate to approach your spouse using a friendly and loving attitude. I would also suggest that you buy a couple of sex education books and read them together and to try to apply the information. Commercial pornographic material is the worst source of information you can have, and may even cause several problems, so try to avoid them as an educational guide.

What are the side effects of birth control pills? Birth control pills contain hormones, hence might not be suitable for everyone. There are two types of contraceptive pills; the compound pill that contains estrogen (female hormone) and progestin (pregnancy hormone), and another that contains only progestin (POP). Possible side effects of the birth control pills may be one or more of the following:Headache, dizziness, breast tenderness, nausea, breakthrough bleeding, decreased libido, mood swings and weight gain.

How do I solve premature ejaculation? This often leaves men feeling frustrated to the point that they would be avoiding sexual intimacy as a result. Many men feel embarrassed to talk about premature ejaculation, but it is a common and treatable condition. The causes are mainly due to stress, and having the wrong beliefs and attitudes towards sexuality. Common treatment options for premature ejaculation include behavioral techniques, counseling and psychotherapy, and medications (topical or oral). Keep in mind that it takes time and patience to find the treatment or combination of treatments that will work for you.

I have an IUD. Intercourse makes me get tired so easily and I don't reach my orgasm fast, and the friction causes infections, how do I solve this issue? Feeling exhausted after normal physical exertion like sexual intercourse is often related to deficiency of iron (anemia) or another essential element, such as vitamin D. A general checkup done by an internist can help you find out about other possible causes of fatigue, such as hypothyroidism or diabetes. Not climaxing at the same pace with your husband is a natural phenomenon in women. But it reaching orgasm may be further delayed due to fatigue and stress. The presence of infections may be a sign that the IUD is not suitable for you. Please refer to your gynecologist about this issue and decide together whether there could be a better birth control method for you. It is worth mentioning that vaginal infections may be caused by weak immunity due to malnutrition, particularly when we overindulge in eating sugars, or with the lack of sleep, the use of antibiotics, and the use of soap to clean the genital area. Do not delay seeking medical help to find a solution before the problem gets worse.

How to get perfect

red lipstick BY: kiki ISMAIL

1. Exfoliate: Use any lip scrub 15 minutes before starting, or you could use sugar and coconut oil scrub; Mix sugar with coconut oil and exfoliate your lips.Scrub your lips for about 2-3 minutes and wipe off with a tissue paper. 2. Moisturize your lips: you always have to keep your lips moisturized and before adding anything on your lips make sure they are moist, not cracked or have any wounds that would be a good environment to the bacteria. Don’t forget to drink a lot of water during the day. 3. Lip Liner: Don’t use a darker or a different color; it has to be the same color as your lipstick. Outline your lips with the liner noting the shape of your lips, don’t forget to fill the rest of your lips with the liner. 4. Lipstick color: people with thin lips shouldn’t be using darker colors as their lips look smaller, and should use the liner outside the lips line. Just a line over it not more, otherwise it will look weird. For fuller lips you could use any color, but avoid bright colors.

Tips:

• Pro tip- take a small brush dipped in a tiny bit of concealer and trace around the outside edge of your lip line to act as an eraser and fix any goofs. This makes your lip line look clean and professional. • Avoid getting lipstick on your teeth. After applying, put your finger in your mouth, purse your lips around it, then slowly pull it out to remove excess color. Trick: Repairing Broken Lipstick: This might be my favorite tip! Instead of throwing away a broken lipstick, melt the broken off piece with a lit match. When it has melted a bit (only takes a few seconds), put the broken piece back on top of the base, and swivel it down. Let it harden in the fridge for at least 20 minutes before using.

Now you can apply your lipstick. Fact: If you think it looks wrong, you’re probably right! 40 | January 2015

Tanned Skin in Winter 5 tips to stay bronzed and beautiful without the sun

The lack of sun brings out the worst in our skin-tones, where we often look pale, unhealthy, blotchy, and plain dull. There are a few things you can do during the winter months to keep from looking sallow, without jumping on a plane to the Southern hemisphere into the sunshine – most solutions are right at your fingertips! 1. Use a self-tanning lotion or foam. These are easily found over the counter at any good pharmacy. Exfoliate and moisturize your skin before applying self-tanner to make sure it absorbs evenly. Reapply every few days until you achieve the desired color. Don’t overdo it to avoid an orange tint on your skin. 2. Buy tinted moisturizer. This is commonly used on your face, but you can also buy body lotions that have a slight tint in them. Use these as you would any moisturizers, but make sure you apply to your whole body, so you don’t end up with streaks and uneven coloring. 3. Hello cocoa. This technique gives you a perfectly sun kissed, bronzed look in an instant. Simply mix your favorite lotion with 100% pure cocoa powder and apply to your skin. You can easily adjust for skin tone, by gradually adding more or less cocoa power. But remember, it will only last until your next shower. 4. It’s all in the tea. Seep 3 or 4 bags of black tea in a cup of hot water until dark. Mix the tea with half a cup of sesame or coconut oil and half a cup of cocoa-butter in a blender until smooth, and apply sparingly to your skin for a hint of golden color. The longer the tea is left to brew before adding to your mixture, the darker the pigment will be. TIP: For a red-orange tan, you can add half a teaspoon of henna to your tea mixture. 5. Carrot and sugar solution.Yum. Try not to eat this one – you’ll need half a kilo of carrots (chopped or grated) and 2 cups of brown sugar, which you’ll simmer on low heat for 3 hours in half a gallon of water. Strain the liquid to remove the lumps when it’s cool, and put the liquid into spray bottle. Use solution once a week for a natural bronzed tone.

Or you could always go for the easy way, Head to a Tanning Lounge! Thick Hair

Thick hair screams hair cream! The thick consistency of hair cream ensures that enough moisture is delivered to every hair follicle by coating it from root to tip; this ensures that all the goodness is absorbed into the hair shaft. The trick here is to choose a coconut oil based hair cream and distribute it evenly throughout your hair. For best results apply the cream, cover your hair with a shower cap, cover your head with a warm towel, and rinse your hair after an hour or two.

Fine Hair This is a bit tricky! I have thin hair myself and I always struggle to find the best hair cream that will moisturize my hair without weighing it done. The best routine I have tried is using both hair cream and oil on my hair; surprisingly it does wonders! The drill is to apply hair cream to my hair strands starting from my ears all the way down to my ends and apply warm oil just to my roots. I then cover my hair with a shower cap and a warm towel. I rinse my hair 1 hour later and only use shampoo. This routine will leave your hair nourished, soft, manageable and not oily!

Normal Hair Those with normal hair are blessed! Whether you choose to apply hair cream or hair oil, it really does not matter! My recommendation is to alternate your routine every week. Use a deep nourishing Argan Oil treatment once a week, two weeks in a row and then use a deep moisture cream once a week for two weeks in a row. Look for a hair cream containing bone marrow extract.

Oily Hair (Thick/Fine/Normal) The trickiest hair type ever! Balancing your scalp secretions is key here! You need to start with a good clean base so using a clarifying shampoo is key. After cleansing 42 | January 2015

your hair and scalp properly; I recommend you use either pure almond oil and massage it onto your scalp and take it all the way down to your ends or using a hair cream with almond oil extract. Almond oil contains no fat; therefore, it is great for oily hair! It will nourish your hair without leaving an oily residue. Latest Trends in Skin Care Cleansing

O

BY: BASMA SHAMS

ver the past six months, a new generation of skin cleansers were launched in the market. The new skin cleansers are in the form of natural oils, that are either in liquid or solid form. The cleanser magically turns into a foam once mixed with water. This gives your skin the ultimate hydration and ensures that every little bit of makeup and dirt are removed, revealing naturally healthy and hydrated skin. The cleansing oils do not block your pores nor do they leave your skin greasy; on the contrary, it helps balance the PH balance of your skin. Below are some of my personal favorite cleansing oils that will do wonders for your face!

Boscia Makeup-Breakup Cool Cleansing Oil. This cleanser is formulated with the purest ingredients and is parabens and sulfate free. It will purify and condition your skin while breaking down all makeup and pollutants in your skin. It contains Jojoba oil, Palm oil and Eucalyptus oil.

Rich in vitamin C, rose hip, and virgin cherry oils, this concentrated formula brightens, repairs, and nourishes the skin. Water activated, the unique oil emulsifies to milk that rinses clean, leaving skin refreshed, healthy, and luminous.

Bobbi Brown Soothing Cleansing Oil. This cleanser is made with soothing jasmine flower extract that is sourced directly from France, moisturizing Kukui Nut oil, and a blend of Italian Olives, organic Sunflower and Jojoba oils to dissolve surface impurities and makeup without leaving skin feeling tight or dry.

Josie Maran Argan Cleansing Oil. This cleanser contains pure organic Argan oil, which repairs and replenishes skin cells and Grape Seed oil, which aids in improving elasticity to the skin and Grapefruit oil that energizes and awakens the skin. January 2015 | 43

Carpet Trends 2015

W

BY: Sally El Bardesy

hen speaking about décor or interior design, it’s always a challenge and a mission to put everything into balance. Balance is what drives us and also maintain the visual stability needed. So here comes one of the most important sources of balance and it is the base! Base in furniture is the carpet. 98 % you are never done with a room without a carpet. Just like the pyramid (the most stable shape in geometry) a carpet has the same roll. However a carpet could ruin it all if not chosen properly. Usually people give less attention to rugs, carpets and flooring in general, so here is a quick guide to help.

46 | January 2015

1. Hang small carpets on wall to add pattern, color and statement. It’s always unique! 2. Round carpets are for attention, usually used for entrances, a lobby or waiting areas. 3. Use a colorful one for a neutral interior and furniture, and vise versa 4. Very small patterned carpets makes the space look wider, but if you have very stylish furniture it’s the best choice. 5. Big patterned carpets are either used in wide spaces and rooms or for a wild style. Also if you think your space looks empty it’s a good choice. 6. The classic carpets people refer to are the traditional ones. Mostly Arabian themes and wool material. Usually they are expensive with non changing colors and designs 7. Runners, mats and small carpets should be either neutral or matching. Only bold if it’s a statement 8. Don’t use carpets beside doors or corners. They are not practical. It will also get over used and look ugly.

The Power of Aroma

9 Ways to make your home smell amazing

Y

ou can always go for the store-bought air-fresheners but you risk things like allergies and chemical residue on your furniture and food. Try something different this time, and indulge in the power of aromas by playing with natural ingredients. The beauty of these tips is that they are all easy, allergy-free, and also leave your home smelling clean, cozy, warm, and thriving with happiness.

1) DIY Deoderizer spray: All you need is a spray bottle, some water, a teaspoon of baking soda, and 12 drops of your favorite essential oil (lavender or eucalyptus are good ones). Mix essential oil into the baking soda in a bowl, then pour the mixture through a funnel into the spray bottle. Top the bottle off with distilled water, shake it up, and spray away. Use this on fabric, carpet, upholstery, or in the air for a lovely fresh smell in your home.

2) No More Stinky Fridge: Cut an orange in half. Remove (and eat!) the orange sections and 48 | January 2015

pulp, then fill the orange shell halfway with salt or baking soda. Place shell in a small bowl, and put it in the back of your fridge to freshen things up – the salt or soda absorbs stale, yucky odors while the orange shell infuses the entire fridge with a fresh, citrus scent.

3) Simmering Stovetops: One of the fastest ways to infuse your home with a great smell is from the stovetop. Add cinnamon sticks, vanilla extract, almond extract, apple cider, rosemary, lemons (or any other scented item you desire) to a cup of water in a saucepan on low heat on your

stovetop. Feel free to get creative with the scents, especially when the weather begins to chill in evenings.

4) Burn it: Sugar doesn’t smell like much, but the minute it is burnt, there is an unmistakable delicious toffee smell that kills of the stink of pretty much anything. Quite simply, grab a square piece of foil and gently fold the sides to form a cup-like holder, fill it with two tablespoons of white sugar, and set it on the stove on low heat. As the heat melts the sugar, it’ll bubble away into a blissfully black mass that smells heavenly. Add a touch of vanilla for extra ‘oumph’.

5) Fragrance bowls: To beat stale odors in any room, simply fill a bowl with clean sand and then top it off with peelings from various citrus fruits. You can also add cinnamon sticks, fresh herbs and spices or even aromatic flowers to the bowl. You will get a nice, clean and natural aroma and a beautiful decoration for the room.

6) Homemade Potpourri: You can easily make your own wonderfully smelling potpourri with things that you find outside such as pinecones, acorns and even leaves, or around the house, like pebbles, a drying bouquet of flowers, or dried fruit or herbs. Then just add things like cinnamon or orange peelings with a few drops of essential oil to give it a clean scent and put a little out in every room.

7)Hanging Pouches:

Sachets

and

Cheesecloth (or a pantyhose foot), is perfect for making sachets that can help you to eliminate odors in dresser drawers, closets or entire rooms. Just fill the cloth with fresh, whole spices, herbs or homemade potpourri and a few drops of essential oil and hang them wherever you need a little room freshening. These are great to hide under pillows to make bedrooms smell wonderful or you could use them in any room you want.

8) Hot vapor: You’d be surprised how potent essential oils are. In a small bowl of steaming hot water, add one teaspoon of your favorite essential oils. The vapor will immediately fill the room – quite useful if you have

a cold or congestion, especially if you’re using mint or eucalyptus oils. Wipe down sinks, walls, and floors with the water when it cools down for a long lingering scent in your kitchen, bathroom, or hallways.

9) Throw it in the oven: This technique totally de-stinks your house in minutes, and makes it smell like a bakery in heaven. Put two caps full of vanilla extract (you can use other oils, such as lemon and lavender) in a coffee cup (or oven proof dish), then place it in the oven at 300 degrees for one hour. The smell will start to spread after around twenty minutes and encompass the whole house after the hour duration. Should last for at least a day.

QUIET CAIRO?

Quiet Hideouts in Cairo to Escape to.

Moqattam

On the East side of Cairo, there is a very underrated rocky mountain. There are no tourists, hardly any noise except for something barely audible in the distance, and you can sit in a café right on the edge of the mountain. Smoke shisha if that’s your thing, or drink tea, but moreover, escape the crowds and the pollution from way up above the city. The view of Cairo is glorious from up there, and if the air is clear enough you can spot the Pyramids on the horizon.

S

ometimes you just want to get away, don’t you? You’ve had it with traffic, honking cars, work, your house, and absolutely everything, and the only thing you crave is a bit of time alone, where you can relax and where no one will bother you. Sounds too good to be true? Not anymore! We’ve found the perfect escape places in Cairo where you can spend an afternoon on your own or with a companion, and enjoy some quiet time.

El Sawy Culture Wheel

The Sawy Culture Wheel has grown very popular in recent years. While known for its festivals, concerts, exhibits and events all year round, they happen to have an exceptional cafe that’s located right beneath the 15th of May Bridge. If you sit there, you are literally under the bridge’s pillars and practically immersed in a 5000 m2 area right on the Nile river. The noises are all a far echo from this quiet smoking-free zone that’s a true getaway.

52 | January 2015

The Opera House Grounds

A lot of people overlook this spectacular spot in the heart of Cairo’s hustle and bustle. With perfectly groomed gardens littered with statues and works of art, the Opera House Grounds are just lovely to stroll through. Visit the art museums, attend concerts, or just sit in the public seating areas amidst the greenery. No one will bother you here. Also, if you’re hungry, the Hanager Gallery has an amazing outdoor café. Either way, you’ll be far away from noises, crowds, bothersome people, and given a chance to relax in one of Cairos most prestigious cultural hubs.

The Cave Church

First, you need a car to get there. And you also have to cross through the not so wonderful “Garbage City”, where people literally live in the garbage, separating and recycling it. When you get there however, you’ll be lost for words. The Cave Church is the biggest church in the Middle East (it can seat up to 20,000 people), and is absolutely enchanting. Carved into the rock-formations of the mountain, you can kiss the world goodbye here… if you want to be alone, this is the place to go

Sufi Bookstore

In the heart of Zamalek resides this unique café / restaurant / bookstore that offers you a serious escape from the city. Indulge in some coffee while reading from a selection of new or used books, in an ethereal atmosphere inspired by Sufism and spirituality. You’ll definitely keep coming back here, if you need a place to think or simply pass time.

Other Bookstores

There is a new bookstore culture around Cairo that is emerging. Most stores now have sitting areas where you can quietly work, read, or simply ‘chill’ with a cup of coffee and a donut if you desperately need an escape. All of the Diwan Bookstores (Zamalek, Maadi, and Heliopolis) have seating areas, as does Al-Kotob Khan in Maadi. The AUC Bookstore in Tahrir is also a great escape, especially since it is located in the historical and beautifullybuilt downtown campus, which is an escape in itself. >> January 2015 | 53

The El-Moez Mosques

El-Moez Street is one of the most enchanting streets in Islamic Cairo, dating back to the Fatimid era. The street itself is for pedestrians only, so no cars, and is littered with sitting areas. However, the bigger treasure resides in the mosques – they are gigantic and currently unused architectural wonders, preserved with their glorious stone work, filigree, and colored roofs and arches. You can easily get transported to another place and time in these quiet and airy spaces, open to the public with no restrictions whatsoever.

Harawi Cafe

In old Islamic Cairo and not far from the renowned Khan el Khalili market, you’ll find this lovely and quiet café that seems to be free of beggars and tourists. it’s a great place to simply relax, chill out, smoke shisha and listen to some traditional Egyptian music while you escape the oppression of the city for a while.

Street 9, Maadi

Now completely traffic free on Fridays, you’ll find a vast array of quiet-town cafes and restaurants where no one will bother you – enjoy a cup of tea or coffee in the morning or evening, where most of the cafes and restaurants have outdoor seating. The street is scattered with unique places if you want to do some shopping, but also provides a great place for a quiet stroll. 54 | January 2015

All Alone

The Benefits of Taking Some Time for Yourself

I

t is important every now and then to indulge in some time alone away from the daily grind, whether it’s to pamper yourself or come to terms with your decisions, or just to catch up with the one person that’s really important – you! Do something (or nothing) that completely allows you to let go of responsibilities and releases your mind, allowing you to be alone with your thoughts. Here are some benefits of alone-time:

Allows you to clear your mind: There’ so much clutter in your head, isn’t there? Taking time out to let your mind breath is essential for your mental health, and grants you the ability to ‘switch off ’. The constant turning wheel of your mind is bound to malfunction if you don’t take give it a break. Sweep your mind clean every now and then and let it rest.

Allows you to set your priorities straight and stay focused: Think of clearing your mind in the same way you imagine breathing clean air into your lungs – everything functions better afterwards. When you take time out on your own, you get to remove 58 | January 2015

all of that mental pollution that clouds your judgment and keeps you from making the right decisions, particularly if you’re inundated by stress or anxiety. Clarity is essential and can be achieved if you’re far away from the chatter of the masses.

Helps you maintain an accurate perception: Resting your mind lets you slow your pace and set things straight, particularly if you are at a time in your life where you are overwhelmed by your duties or need to make life-changing decisions. Clarity is quintessential for you to have an accurate perception, and alone-time slows you down long enough to both stop and smell the flowers, and take note of the things you’d otherwise be too busy to notice.

Allows for insight and self awareness: Maybe there’s something you’ve always enjoyed doing but have always been too busy to really give it some thought. Perhaps there are bad habits you’ve picked up along the way because of your highly stressful lifestyle – and perhaps that lifestyle needs some tweaking or major changes. Some alone time lets you take a look at yourself as you are, away from the judgments, opinions, and influences of others that contribute to shaping a ‘you’ that isn’t entirely ‘you’.

Removes you from unnecessary information: Gossip can be a killer, and there are some things out there that you are simple better off not knowing. An

overdose of information can leave you feeling stressed, depressed, or angry, and will inevitably encourage your mind to conjure situations and scenarios that never happened to begin with – leading to more frustration. Time alone is meditative if you use it constructively to ignore unnecessary information or avoid it altogether.

Things you can do on your own: Start Blogging: Writing about things often helps with clarity of thought – and blogging is the perfect arena for this sort of thing. With a multitude of free blogging websites, you can start anything from an online journal, a hobby-related blog such as cooking, arts, or parenting, or an

online community where people like you can pitch-in and share things that relate to each-other. Many incredible things have evolved from blogging, so start checking out what others have done and then begin your own. You won’t regret it.

Take Classes: Learning something new is always beneficial – firstly because you expand your knowledge and secondly, because you will be forced to focus on something else. There are a multitude of online classes that you can choose from, or you can take up something that involves being present, a sport, a language, or jewelry-making – anything that suits your fancy. You’ll meet new people and have the time of your life.

Meditate: Take up yoga or Tai-Chi, or simply settle somewhere quiet and comfortable and let your mind drift, uninterrupted for however long you like. That sort of break is essential to your brain health, where like any machine, you need to switch off and simply rest.

Pamper yourself: Make this a weekly ritual if you can – either go to a day spa and get them to squeeze the stress out of you, or, you can lock yourself in the bathroom with candles, your favorite scented bath oils, and some gentle music – and soak away as you clear your mind. Warn everyone at home not to disturb you though.

It depends on the cause and you may need to see a doctor. But generally, artificial tears for dry eye, antihistamine eye drops for allergy, warm compresses for blepharitis all work fine.

Dr. Monib Zirvi Dermatology

How can I treat a coldsore? Doctor’s Answer:

Initially, the cold sore appears as a cluster or single vesicle or blister on a red base. Over a few days, the blister opens and becomes crusted and then heals over the course of 1-2 weeks. 5

Dr. David Miller Family Medicine

What is the best medication to take for water retention? Doctor’s Answer:

Water retention is a symptom of some underlying problem. The trick is to figure out what that is and treat it. The answer is often diuretics (“water pills”) but the cause will determine what kinds of diuretics or even a different treatment entirely. Definitely need to see your doctor for this

7

Dr. Jennifer Haley

Dermatology

6

Dr. Philip Rosenblum Family Medicine

Is it better to take vitamins in the morning or at night? Doctor’s Answer:

That decision should be based on what you’re taking and eating at that time. Calcium-containing vitamins, including multivitamin tablets, should be taken apart from a meal, particularly a dairy or high calcium meal. My basic advice is that it is probably a waste to take a supplement that is present in high levels in the meal you’re eating.

8

Victoria Sanchez-Lincoln ‘Real Simple Fashion’ Director

My hair is very weak, falls and breaks a lot. I’m 24 and I have some grey hair already, Why? And what can I do to make my hair healthy and strong again?

I’m just starting work, and I’d like to know what is the stylish, classy professional look to wear to the office these days?

Doctor’s Answer:

Expert’s Answer:

There are entire books written on hair loss but a few thoughts without seeing you: take biotin, if you are iron deficient (I’d check ferritin levels), recommend OTC iron with 500 mg vitamin C 3-5 times a week. Also, have your thyroid and ANA (lupus test) checked. A study showed that a small handful of almonds a day can delay grey hair. Avoid heat and chemicals.

Look for materials that are comfortable but have an inherently dressier feel (jersey, chiffon, cashmere). Try pairing, say, a flowy jersey top with relaxed trousers or nice jeans (if your work environment permits) for an outfit that toes the line between office-appropriate and easygoing polish. Chic accessories will make a big difference, too: Tying on a beautiful printed silk scarf will elevate virtually any outfit

The 12 days of Christmas…

that you will have to make up for in the next 12 months!

M

BY: NATASCIA PAOLUCCI agazines have two imperatives in January: Horoscope and Resolutions. We will concentrate on the second option. Indeed the beginning of the year is always a favorable time to reflect on our achievements, our goals, make an honest assessment and take (more or less) honest resolutions. To help you in the first part, here is a short quiz:

Nutrition :

1)How many calories were there in 100g of Christmas pudding? 329 Calories (of which there is 18% fat and 18% carbs). And when you think that a pudding the size of fist weighs about 10 pounds – I may be exaggerating, but not much – let me tell you that a typical service size is not 100g. Fortunately, this happens once a year!

2)How many calories were there in 100g of oven roasted turkey? 115 calories (with only carbs). Rich in protein, this may not be such a bad idea after all!

5)What food is richest in vitamin D (against the decrease in sunlight)? Cod liver oil (100g have 10 000 international units, which represent 1667% of the daily value recommended). Tastes awful, fortunately they exist in supplement pills.

6)What food did Santa want for a snack beside the chimney? Cookies and milk, what else? Now that you think of it, the man has a belly large enough to hide his feet.

FAD DIET BY: Noura Hassaballa

W

eight loss and body image have become the topic of every woman’s gathering. Every now and then I hear about a new diet trend that everyone follows for the season, but what really took me by surprise was hearing a couple of clients telling me about the Lemon & Yogurt Diet. Obviously it’s been going around the internet that if you squeeze half a lemon on your yogurt before bedtime, it will magically melt belly fat!!! Whether it’s Atkins, detox, cabbage soup, south beach, baby food, the juice diet, or you name it, they will all take you to the same path; you will lose the weight so fast, then gain it all back even more.

How Fad Diet’s work: • • • • • •

Following a very low calorie diet that causes loss of fluids You are only allowed certain foods Very low or no carbs Limited amount of fruits per day You are promised to lose X amount of pounds in X amount days It doesn’t specify the weight loss nature (e.g. are you losing fats or losing muscles and water) • Starving yourself • Some warn you about physical activity while doing a specific type of diet Unfortunately these diets have become more popular to the public than being knowledgeable about sensible and mindful eating. Most programs that emphasize the “too good to be true” results will have potential side effects, or the results may only apply to few people. Cutting calories will help you lose weight, but being active is essential for keeping it off. Researches have shown that, people who were successful at keeping their weigh off, got an hour or more of moderate exercise 3-4 times per week. Be careful with diets that don’t promote obvious healthy eating habits and lifestyle changes. Also, if you are asked to invest in supplements, herbs, pills, or patches you should definitely ask your dietitian before consuming such things without knowing the side effects, because it can be deadly. There is no magic formula that makes you drop the extra weight in no time. Just like it took you sometime to gain the weight, it may take you the same amount of time may be more to lose it, so be patient.

How to Avoid Fad Diets • • • • • • • • •

Your body is like an engine, it needs fuel to run efficiently Know the benefits of healthy weight loss and overall health Eat everything in moderation; no food is ever prohibited Form and maintain healthy eating habits Include a wide variety of nutritious food Avoid processed food Make small changes in your eating habits Start packing your lunch and snacks to work Drink 1 cup of water before you eat anything January 2015 | 69

AQUA e LUCE REVIEW

I

f you enjoy a touch of style and sophistication without the large helping of ‘stuffy’, the latest renaissance of Aqua e Luce at the Fairmont Heliopolis and Towers will prove too much of a temptation to resist.

The accent is on Modern European cuisine – with the accent on European rather than just French. After all, the restaurant’s name, meaning ‘Water and Light’, is Italian. Aqua e Luce, open for lunch and dinner, creates an aura of easy-going elegance among the lobby’s radiant natural brightness, water features and greenery. The new concept uses French techniques and principles, but expanded to take in the flexibility of neo-classical European cuisine. Combinations within each dish are creative and imaginative, bordering on the adventurous. The presentation is perfection, showcasing vivid and subtle colors with textures, fragrances and tastes plated in a happy harmony. It is certainly up-market with a strict and solid view of itself … featuring a structured menu where every item has its role. And don’t think you can stumble in with a crowd looking for some quick nosh. Clinton says: “Eight diners to a table will be the max, because the dishes will be prepared and timed to the minute. The dishes taken to the table have to be the best they can possibly be; otherwise we will be sending out the wrong message.” There will be no “Well I like this main dish, but could I have it with this instead of that …” Try that on and chef de cuisine Christian Cilia may come to your table to have a word. “Don’t mess with the chef!” is a jokey warning from Clinton who continues: “Everything is on the plate for a purpose.” Christian and Clinton avoid ingredients that can only make sporadic appearances on the menu. “We use Egyptian and local products wherever possible, as we want sustainability in our selection. We are making the most of what is here and the best of what Europe has to offer,” says Clinton. Each dish has stylishly simplicity, but with a substance that totally satisfies … and yet, as Christian says “I always want my diners to feel they want one more bite, one more taste.”

Christian orchestrated our meal, of course, beginning with white onion and thyme veloute and caviar nestling on its tiny spoon at the side of the dish. Terrine of duck liver and foiegras, a brioche feuilleté (that dissolved on the tongue) and Granny Smith apple butter was followed by tortellini filled with the classic Italian fontina cheese, plus chestnut puree and white truffle foam. The appeal of the menu is in exciting your sense of exploration. Christian’s choices were faultless, but I could as easily have been tempted by the olive oil poached hammour with caviar beurre blanc … butter poached lobster with leek fricassee … glazed saddle of lamb or French poularde chicken. Our main course was a parcel of veal fillet with pan-fried foiegras and the gorgeously crimson-hued red wine braised shallots. The textures and flavours of vegetables adorn the centre piece of the dishes, with subtle sensations on the tongue and surprising blends. Whatever the combination, each distinct flavour reveals its unique quality; no single taste is smothered or overwhelmed by another. Christian says: “For me, less is more. The dish should not be overpowered with excessive ingredients. The magic of food is in its simplicity. I want to share my passion for European culinary art.”

Banoffee Pie

B

anoffee Pie is an English dessert pie made from bananas, cream and toffee from boiled condensed milk, either on a pastry base or one made from crumbled biscuits and butter. Some versions of the recipe also include chocolate, coffee or both. Its name is constructed from the words “banana” and “toffee”.

Ingredients: Serves: 12

For the toffee sauce • 1 (405g) tin of condensed milk Base • 350g of digestives or biscuits of your choice • 150g of butter, melted • 1 (284ml) pot of double cream • 3 bananas, sliced • Instant coffee (optional) • Chocolate shavings for decoration

Directions: Prep:1hr › Cook:2hr › Ready in:3hr • To make the toffee sauce, remove the label of the condensed milk and immerse it in boiling water. Boil the tin for 2 - 3 hours. The longer you boil it, the darker and thicker the toffee will be. Make sure that the tin is FULLY immersed in water, otherwise, the tin will explode. • For the base, crush the digestives and mix it with melted butter. Using a fork, press the digestives onto the pan. Make sure that there are no holes. Chill. Meanwhile, whip the cream until it’s stiff. • There are three ways to arrange: • Simple: Mix toffee and banana then pour onto the base. Sprinkle instant coffee then spread cream on top. • Layer - spread cream onto the base, sprinkle a little bit of instant coffee then arrange the sliced banana, spread toffee then repeat. • Layer 2 - spread cream onto the base, arrange the sliced banana then add another layer of cream. Sprinkle some coffee powder and drizzle it with toffee. January 2015 | 73

8 Sex Cravings All Guys Have

74 | January 2015

W

ant to know the workings of your guy’s mind? We’ve made our efforts to find out what makes him tick and we’re sharing it with you!

1.He wants to watch Men lust after what they see, so make sure to give him an appealing eyeful. Keep some clothes on after a sexy-striptease or wear some sexy lingerie – this is just as arousing as being nude because it builds anticipation. Sometimes men prefer when you leave a little to the imagination.

2.He wants you to be naughty What little tricks can you play? Well, anything that shows him how much you enjoy sex and how much you want it with him. Let him know you’re into him - grab his butt hard when he’s climaxing or gently nip his shoulder. Or, do something unexpected like switching positions or playing with ‘toys’.

3.He wants a ‘wow, what was that?!’ experience Ladies, pull a move so wild, he won’t be able to stop thinking about it the next day. If you’ve mastered one particular technique that’s really hot and different,

the entire erotic memory will stand out in his mind. You can do this by tweaking an old trick or technique - for example, switching between oral sex and intercourse ... with him blindfolded or handcuffed.

4.He wants a woman that can turn herself on Although your man may be more than willing to do what it takes to get you hot, he wouldn’t mind if you gave yourself a running start. A number of women still believe that it’s solely a man’s job to arouse them – but this isn’t true. Give your libido a head-start and draw on the sources of inspiration that turn you on or that you use during solo selfpleasuring.

5.He wants to know what turns you on Face it – your libido is baffling to men. That’s why a guy loves it when you’re able to guide him without being bossy (unless he’s into that!). Also, while giving erotic instruction, throw in some positive reinforcement by telling him how good it feels when he does something right, or remind him of a technique that always makes you ‘happy’.

6.He wants variety Repetition gets boring, so be open to varying things in bed. Any change in speed, pressure, or position will make the act more exciting, interesting, and pleasurable. Variety keeps him guessing and in a heightened state of arousal because he never knows what to expect from you.

7.He wants sex out of nowhere He doesn’t always have to be the one to initiate sex – he wants to be seduced out of nowhere too, and it gives him a huge ego boost by reinforcing the fact that you’re really hot for him. Make it spontaneous and unexpected - ask him to pull over to a deserted spot for some fun as you’re driving home for example.

8.He wants to indulge in his animalistic instincts The best way to bring out the sexy beast in your guy is to let him initiate some take-me-I’m-yours action. He’d love to be raw and animalistic with you, but he needs to know you want it too, as long as you’re comfortable with it. January 2015 | 75

Mother & Child

Working Mothers

Ways to beat the guilt and keep kids from feeling neglected

S

ome people still think that a “good mother” is one who gives up work to stay home with her children. But no scientific evidence says children are harmed when their mothers work. A mother who successfully manages both a job and a home provides a role model for her child. A child’s development is influenced more by the emotional health of the family and the quality of child care. A child who is emotionally well adjusted, well loved, and well cared for, will thrive regardless of whether the mother works outside the home or not. However, it’s never easy being a mom trying to juggle a full-time job with a family life. Being a full-time working mother can lead to feelings of guilt and stress because of divided attention between work and family. The key is to focus on a plan, get organized, and find the right balance between profession and parenthood. Here are a few ways to help make sure both your career and your family flourish.

1. Let the Guilt Go. Rather than panic about how you’re not with your child, think about how your work is benefitting the family. Perhaps you can afford certain classes or educational opportunities for your children or you’re able to put away savings for college. Accept that there will be good and bad days. Mothers should know they are not alone and they should discuss their feelings with partners or support groups. 2. Find Quality Childcare. Ask your network of friends and family for references to nannies, babysitters, and daycare centers. Create a list of criteria that are important and then schedule time to interview qualified childcare providers or to tour local daycares. A good childcare provider should have extensive experience, excellent references, and a record to prove it. A good daycare facility should have flexible hours, outdoor

78 | January 2015

space, up-to-date licenses, and employees who have had their backgrounds checked. 3. Make the Mornings Easier. Avoid a crazy morning by getting organized the night before. Pack the kids’ lunches, lay out their clothes (plus your own), and have everyone shower. You should also decide in advance what to make for breakfast, and repack the diaper bag, backpacks, purses, or work bags to be placed by the door, right next to your keys, so you can grab them and lock up on your way out. Knowing that the chunk of your morning tasks are completed will allow you to spend more time eating breakfast with the kids without rushing out of the house.

4. Create and Organize a Family Calendar. Figure out your family’s priorities. A calendar can include dates when bills are due, a list of school and family events, extracurricular activities, birthdays, and more. Set aside 15 minutes each Saturday night to review and prepare for the upcoming week’s schedule and share it with other family memebers. 5. Communicate with Your Employer. Every employer is different, but most should be aware that you have a child and hence can be called off for emergencies at any given moment. Try to be as open and honest as possible, and be prepared to present alternative solutions, such as a trial period of your projected work schedule so you can show how any arrangement in the benefit of your child won’t restrict productivity. Also, moms seeking maternity leave should ask two questions when speaking with a supervisor: “How much time can I take off ?” and “How much of that time will be paid?” Discuss using short-term vacation/sick time to cover some of your time away from the office. 6. Stay Connected During the Day. Stay connected with your children even when you’re not together. For moms with younger kids, consider recording yourself talking or singing on a video or record your voice reading along to a children’s story. If you’re going to miss or be late to an older child’s event, give him/her something special in the morning, like a good-luck charm or a personal note. Look into options for filming the event so you can watch it later and not miss a moment. During your breaks at work, call your child if possible.

9. Create Special Family Activities. Making time for your kids is crucial, both during the week and on the weekends, to nurture your family dynamic and allow everyone to bond. If you’re pressed for time, have a family breakfast or a family night with board games or movies. Create activities that regularly fit into your schedule so everyone knows what to expect and what to look forward to. During family outings, avoid talking about work or checking your phone. Instead, focus on your child’s interests, friends, classes, and hobbies. With older children, ask for their activity suggestions and try to meet their needs. In the end, it doesn’t really matter what you do as long as you do it together. 10. Create Moments for Yourself. By managing time wisely, you can fit in valuable “me” time regularly. A refreshing break will help you recharge while taking care of personal needs. Lose yourself in a book before you go to sleep, take a bubble bath once a week, or treat yourself to a spa day. Fit in time for exercise (like a yoga class) or focus on a hobby. Remember to eat well and get enough rest -- simple things that even the smartest moms neglect.

7. Kill the TV. Or at least dismember it, especially during meals. The result, not surprisingly, is better table talk and a less circus-like atmosphere at dinner. Sitting down to watch a particular show or video can be a great way for families to relax together, but having the TV on in the background all the time just adds another level of noise and stress. Or consider this: No TV Monday through Thursday nights. More time for homework, reading, talking, playing. Sounds better, doesn’t it? 8. Take a day off every now and then. If you aren’t saving up for a long vacation this year, take off a day a month instead, or use one of your sick-leave days. If school is in session, allow your child to miss the day, so you can spend it together. Sleep in late, cook breakfast together, head to the zoo or park or mall, then go out to eat. At home, you can read together, play a video game, or just chill out on the couch and watch a movie. You don’t have to do anything special or expensive to make your children feel loved. How to keep your kids busy and yourself sane during the holidays

T

he holidays are here! While this might be a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time together, we understand that there will be times when you really wish you could keep them occupied while you did your own thing. We’re here to help you! Ladybird’s maternal staff have put their heads together and come up with sure ways to keep you and the kids sane during the holidays with minimal damage.

Make their own characters You can’t go wrong with arts and crafts. Stock up on paper, material, glue, beads, play-dough, glitter, lace, buttons, anything – even broken gadgets – and have your kids work on making characters out of them. You’ll be surprised at their creative genius, particularly when you ask them to give their characters a name and make up a story about them. You might even want to join in the fun yourself!

Let them make an artsy mess: Kids will be kids – it’s unrealistic to expect they’ll mind the furniture and carpets, so stay ahead of the game and cover your furniture with old bed sheets, newspapers, or plastic – and pull out the art supplies! Invest in large sheets of paper, crayons, pens, markers, and let them go crazy. This will not only occupy them for hours, but will give them the indulgence of expressing themselves without limitation.

TIP Take it a step further and let them design their own t-shirts or keep a ‘creations’ book.

80 | January 2015

Word-search puzzles These are extremely easy to make or buy from a local bookstore, and will not only keep your kids occupied for ages, but will also enhance their observation and determination skills.

Lego Lego bits are only a pain if you accidentally step on them, but otherwise, they’re the most harmless toys ever. Suitable to ages 3 and up, your kids can create worlds with Lego – arches and bridges and buildings and cities. Clear an area where they can spend their time building and working out architectural

Movie Marathon Screen one film after the other – but not just anything! Focus on sequels that have 2, 3 or even 4 parts, or general themes. Ask your kids what they’d like to see and make an age-appropriate selection together. You can set up your viewing area with beanbags and comfy blankets and pillows just to set the scene, and turn up the volume. Have a big supply of popcorn ready though – it might take all day!

Bake together Keep them away from the knives of course, but there’s no harm in inviting them into your kitchen, giving them a bowl with flour and milk and sugar and butter and asking them to help you make a batch of cookies or a cake. Decorating the end product is also a part of the fun.

Work-out video Speaking of videos, there’s actually a lot of fun in having your kids try the latest workout. Pop in a DVD or a downloaded minimal impact aerobics workout and have them follow the moves. This is a fun activity that you can do together or let them do on their own – either way, they physical activity is great for them in the absence of PE classes at school.

Ladybird suggests these movie sequels: • Shrek (1 & 2) • Toy story (1, 2 & 3) • Harry Potter (1, 2, 3, 4 & 5) • Night at the Museum (1 & 2) • The Never Ending Story (1, 2, & 3) • Spiderman (1, 2 & 3)

album

Three years after breaking out with ‘212,’ Banks makes a bold EDM-rap statement After a two-year standoff with Interscope, Azealia Banks triumphs with her self-released debut. She nods to club kids of all ages by infusing elements of jazz, deep house and U.K. garage into tracks like “Desperado” and “Chasing Time.” Her most impressive fusion, “Gimme a Chance,” starts with the bubblegum of Tom Tom Club and turns into a bilingual hip-hop joint brimming with AfroCaribbean tumbao rhythms. This just might be the year’s boldest release.

movie ‘Al-Sefr - A documentary film about the human rights for the poor in egypt Salma Sarhan directed the documentary film ‘Al-Sefr, which she wanted to represent the undermined rights of the unknown and misunderstood who reached rock bottom, and who believe that they’re not rights, they’re just unneeded luxury and that’s why she called the film ‘Al-Sefr where one guy said that he reached rock bottom that he was ‘Al-Sefr. The film focuses on substantive rights, freedom of expression and torture in prison . Salma Sarhan graduated from MIU University and was trained at Sky News Arabia. She then went to the USA where she worked as an assistant director in some of the documentary films.

book How To Be Both: A Novel By Ali Smith There are two published editions of this odd, bifurcated novel. Depending on which copy you end up with, you’ll either start with the story of the artist Francesco del Cossa, a Renaissance Italian fresco painter, or that of George, short for Georgia, a ‘60s teenager who recently lost her mother. Either way you will have the delightful experience of reading something truly innovative. The stories illuminate each other differently based on the order in which you encounter them. And the writing isn’t outpaced by the inventiveness of the structure — it’s vivid and tender and funny. And what a feat! a book so tightly constructed that it contains not just two narratives that themselves explore duality, but two wholly different encounters with the book itself.
