Letter Editor’s
Count your Blessings As the first day of Ramadan was approaching, my mother was head over heels preparing for our family gathering, the kitchen was a mess, phone was ringing insanely, everyone wishing us a happy Ramadan, friends were already sending out gathering invitations; with all this going on, it made me pause and think how blessed I am, and how even though I might be delinquent in thanking God, he never hesitated to offer me but the best. In this letter, I thank God for the inferior before the superior, as the broken roads he presented me with led me to the righteous path. I thank God for the people I lost, the ones whom are alive, and the ones whom are not, for it made me appreciate the people I got. I thank God for the pain, for it has opened my eyes to an endurance and patience I never thought existed. I thank God for the people who wronged me, for I wouldn’t have been strong and brave enough to walk away from them. From deep down my heart, I thank God for the bumps, burdens, sufferings and wrong turns, for if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be certain that after every dark route, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. When you trust in God’s lessons that they aim to raise you up, and never to undermine or destroy you, maybe then you’ll start counting your blessings; the blessings that your tears have blocked you from discerning. For this month, and every month, start showing gratitude for the little things God favored you with, such as a family, a roof above your head, a bed, clothes, food, and the list is endless. Practice this, and I promise your life will never be the same. Happy Ramadan to everyone out there, and always remember, God is merciful, God is graceful.

JUST IN: Pastels are invading our Summer wardrobe once again! by: ALAA EL GARHY
Pastels are back, and they are stronger than ever this season. From accessories to clothes, pastels rocked the runways this season with their different shades. Designers made sure your pastels go everywhere with you; to the office, brunch, or to a night-out with your friends. Pastels are invading our jewelry boxes as well from statement necklaces to rings. Not only that, but you can even integrate them into your makeup and nails. It appears that designers have a sort of “candy crush” this year, as you can clearly see their inspiration translated through all those amazing candy colors. Oscar de la Renta and Marc by Marc Jacobs gave us an inspiring collection, which was seen during New York fashion week. Cropped tops never looked so amazing and interesting as they do in pastels, not to mention that they make you look more tanned than you really are. Printed pastels are also a smart way to add a twist to your wardrobe. Adding patterns and prints to your wardrobe is a bold and stylish move that would be perfect for the summer. Also, you can mix up two of the trends that are hot this season, pastels with black and white. A pastel piece on your black and white outfit, will give your outfit definition and a bright summer look.
Oscar de la Renta
Marc by Marc Jacobs Although it might be unusual to some people, pastels is also making a mark on evening wear, and it’s no longer limited to daytime and casual looks. Zuhair Murad and Elie Saab proved that through offering us an amazing collection incorporating all this season's pastels for evening wear. Tip: You can always flatter your pastels by adding a Pop-of Color to it. Elie Saab 14 | July 2014

The Modest Maxi
D
By: Maha Abdel-Latif
uring the month of Ramadan, many of us try to follow one key rule when it comes to showing skin: less is more. But with the Holy month coinciding with the warmer summer months lately, the challenge is to find ways of keeping cool in the heat whilst still staying modest. Lucky for us, one thing that seems to not be going out of style anytime soon is the good old maxi dress/skirt. Low on skin, high on style – maxi dresses and skirts are perfect for the modest fashionista this Ramadan! What’s even better is there are many ways to wear and style this on-going trend. Keep reading for ideas on how to incorporate the maxi dress/skirt into your wardrobe this coming month.
1.
Belted Maxi Dress
Take that old maxi dress out of the back of your closet, throw a belt on it, put on a pair of strappy sandals, and you’re out the door! Adding a belt to a long summer dress will help define your waist and give your outfit the extra oomph that it needs. Done right, this look is often the perfect mix of femininity and modesty.
2.
High-Waisted Maxi Skirt
Wear your high-waisted maxi skirt with a loose, tucked-in top for an outfit that will have you feeling comfortable, yet very well put together. This low maintenance ensemble will easily take you from a fun night out after Iftar to a family gathering for Suhoor.
3.
Bold Print
Who says dressing modestly means wearing plain and boring pieces? Kick your outfit up a notch by wearing your maxi dress or skirt in a fun pattern. Go for a bohemian style maxi skirt paired with a tuckedin tee for a simple boho-chic look. Or, go for a dress in horizontal or chevron stripes, making sure to play down everything else.
4.
Prim and Proper
In the event of having to throw together a more formal outfit for Ramadan, opting for a pleated maxi skirt or a maxi dress with a chiffon overlay will definitely get the job done. 16 | July 2014
5.
Vibrant Color
Instantly get that California girl look by wearing your maxi skirt in a fun, vibrant color. Opt for a soft, flowing fabric for your vibrant skirt and keep everything else neutral to complete your beachy look.

S
Fashion Brand
herwal is a label for ethnic fashion with a contemporary twist. Authenticity and style lie at the heart of the Sherwal concept. Sherwal began crafting great-fitting, vintage-inspired harem pants in 2011. They made them distinctively unique by using ethnic fabrics with buoyant bold prints to give them true character and soul. Keep your Skin Hydrated during Ramadan
F
ood and water are among the main factors that could enhance your skin or make it look worse. During Ramadan, with long hours of fasting, many of us struggle with following a healthy diet, and some could also go for days without drinking the sufficient amount of water, which affects our overall metabolism and thereby affect our skin texture. Consequently, we are more prone to suffering from skin dehydration during Ramadan, especially with such dusty hot weather. Luckily there are several tips you could follow to rehydrate your skin, but first it‘s necessary that you understand reasons why your skin gets dehydrated, and how to know if your skin is dehydrated in the first place.
Note that dehydrated skin is often mistaken for dry skin, so it’s really important to differentiate between the two in order to look for the proper treatment. Skin dehydration is often referred to as a condition, while dry skin is listed among the several types of skin that one is born with. And while dry skin is characterized by lack of skin oil, dehydrated skin is characterized by lack of water/moisture and could rehydrate with time. 38 | July 2014
HERE ARE THE MAIN SYMPTOMS THAT INDICATE YOU’RE HAVING A DEHYDRATED SKIN: • • • •
Tightness and roughness Obvious skin lines with a dull look General sense of irritation and Itchiness Redness and inflammation
THE MOST COMMON CAUSES OF SKIN DEHYDRATION: • With the natural aging of skin cells dehydration is quite common because the number of skin hydrators declines. • Poor cleansing routines and using insufficient skin products, like harsh soaps, heavy scrubs as well as inadequate moisturizers, could also contribute to skin dehydration. • Environmental factors have a big role in determining the skin condition. Air conditioning and/or increased sun exposure reduces the amount of water on the skin and thereby increases dehydration. • Diet and imbalanced consumption of food and liquid is a major contributing factor to skin dehydration. During fasting, our whole diet routine usually changes as well as our metabolism, which is directly reflected on our skin.
TIPS FOR REHYDRATING YOUR SKIN DURING RAMADAN: • Try to control the mentioned above factors, because if they persist, they will reduce the effectiveness of any precautions/ treatments you’ll take. • Apply adequate moisturizers by night, and not the light milky ones that get absorbed too quickly. By doing so, you maintain a longer fresher look. You can try Oriflam’s latest Love Nature Aloe Vera range that would keep your skin hydrated. • Apply rose water as it’s considered a natural moisturizer. • Take sufficient amount of water. The average adult should take 3 liters of water per day, so try to break that amount between Iftar and Suhoor. • Try to avoid overly salty food, as salt absorbs skin moisture from skin cells. • Take food that is rich in water content. Fruits like mangoes, strawberries, blueberries, apples and peaches would help moisturize your skin. • Vegetables, like cucumber and broccoli would also make your skin look fresh and nourished. • Nuts and dates are very popular during Ramadan, and luckily, both would help rehydrate your skin. • Try to replace sodas with fresh juices during Iftar. • Use the two magical components: Lemon and Honey. You could either use them as a facial mask or enjoy them as a warm drink, or even both. Either way, they will trigger your metabolism, enhance your overall nourishment and freshen your skin.

Hair-Care Tips to Protect your Hair from Humidity
W
e all love summer, but we all suffer from its downfalls starting from sunburns, weird tan lines, to bug bites and most of all, we can’t stand what humid weather does to our hair leaving it… out of control. You go out on a summery day with perfect hair when all of a sudden a mirror passes your path and you look like a character from the Wizard of Oz! Because humid weather causes strands to absorb more moisture, it can actually change the length and look of your hair. And because it’s a problem that most women face, we couldn’t leave you hanging without a solution. Read along and wave goodbye to bad summer hair days.
COLD WATER
One way to lower the effects of humidity on your hair is to ditch warm water in the shower and rinse your hair with cold water. This will help to close down your hair’s cuticle and seal up the pores so that moisture from the 40 | July 2014
air can’t get in and damage your hairstyle. Moreover, it will help your hair lay flat instead of flying upward and out of control. Tip: Hitting your locks with a blast of cold water will also make it look shinier and sleeker.
ALWAYS USE CONDITIONER Planning a bit in advance for a humid day is the key to taming down your hair. In order to protect your hair from the effects of humidity, make sure you deep condition your hair after using shampoo in order to keep your hair hydrated, as dehydrated hair absorbs moisture quickly. Hairstylist Melanie Shelley recommends applying a deep conditioner twice a week in the shower, halfway down the length of hair to the ends. Towel dry, and then add a product designed to prevent frizz and boost shine.
HERE ARE SOME HUMIDITY-PROOF HAIRSTYLE TRICKS: 1. Sleek Chignon 2. Chic Turban 3. Slicked Back 4. Sideswept 5. Braided Updo 6. Short Crop 7. Tight Braid
1
BLOW DRY, BUT KEEP IT A LITTLE DAMP The worst thing you can do is to leave your home with wet hair; however, overdrying as well can result in frizz, so make sure not to blow-dry your hair till the end to keep the frizz down. It is important to use predrying serums and creams before blow-drying such as Bumble and Bumble Straight Blow Dry, as well as before air-drying such as Garnier Fructis Style Full Control AntiHumidity Hairspray to prevent your hair from frizzing and flopping. Nevertheless, to have the best results, air-drying prevents your hair from being dehydrated, which results in having dry locks.

EMBRACE YOUR CURLS Now is the season to set your hair free; for a change, ditch your flat iron and go natural. If your hair is curly or wavy, play with it and show it off. Hair that’s damaged from overdrying or stress is even more prone to frizz.
CHIC HAIRSTYLE TIME When humid weather takes its toll on you (and it will) pull your hair back in a chic style. And lucky you, braids, buns, sideswepts and much more similar hairstyles are IN, so why not make use of this trend and incorporate it in your hairstyle do for a never-again-bad-hair-day.

We are three founders, and we all come from different backgrounds. Dr. Alaa El Gamal comes from a medical background, Karim El Taweel comes from a marketing 42 | July 2014
HOW DID THE IDEA OF BEQALA.COM COME TO YOU? The idea has been present around the world for several years. At first, we just had small businesses, but after the 2011 revolution, the idea of improving an online food & grocery store came to us, because people weren’t able to get down much. Therefore, we thought about means for people to view the supermarket from their homes, and order as well without walking down the store. In May 2013, beqala. com was physically activated. Nevertheless, we wanted to deliver the technology that is present around the world to Egyptians. HOW DOES YOUR ONLINE SUPERMARKET DIFFER FROM A TRADITIONAL STORE? We are easier, faster, and have better promotions. In traditional stores, the customer pays for all benefits s/he is provided with such as the AC, shelves, etc. Why as a customer should you bear all this? We, beqala. com, provide our customers with excellent quality of products, with the market’s same price, if not less, delivered to their door step with good experience. Basically, they are delivered value at their convenient. Moreover, our website, which you can create your own account on, saves your order which you usually don’t change much each month; therefore, you can adjust your order and purchase without going through choosing your items again. Plus, you can choose your payment process, which is either cash or through credit card, which you pay at your door step. Also, the percentage of a missing product or any mistake in your order is 0%, which is something customers face often with traditional stores. WHY SHOULD PEOPLE CHOOSE BEQALA. COM AND NOT SOME OTHER ONLINE GROCERY STORE? Not only were we the first and only online food & grocery store, but the only one with an ERP integrated system, which is a full setup that is easier for the customer. Now, people are following us and
creating online grocery stores, which I personally love. Moreover, Beqala.com has an end to end thing, where we are in control of everything; we have promotions that are tailor made especially to beqala.com, which I’m sure that they are not found elsewhere. We have excellent experience with our customers, which forms our customer loyalty. The percentage of our delivery on time is almost 98%, which we are working on enhancing to 100%. We are always keen on conducting surveys to test and improve our performance. Very soon we will have our own beqala.com booths, where our customer can pick up their delivery if they wish. Nevertheless, we always have ongoing promotions.
to view, so the customer is able to see everything s/he needs. You can also check up on your order through our hotline number.
EGYPTIANS USUALLY HAVE CONCERNS TOWARDS ONLINE PLATFORMS; HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT? Around the world, online stores’ payment process is online; however, because we know that this is a barrier, and still not a habit at Egyptians, we allowed the customer to pay at their door step. Also, we do not sell any products that are not well known, which ensures the customer that our products are of high quality. We have the same products that are available at your traditional store; however, packed and stored in better, healthier conditions. Moreover, we try to deliver full transparency of our products, for example, our products’ photos are real life pictures, as if you are viewing them at a traditional supermarket. We also always have the expiration date available for customers
WHAT ARE THE MAIN OBSTACLES YOU HAVE FACED? Our main obstacle was that small traders took advantage of our promotions and placed orders. As soon as we found out, we called them to apologize, and blocked their account if the incident was repeated. This was an obstacle because the promotions were created for customers to benefit from, and not otherwise. Also, because traders bought products on promotions, for example, if a product had a promotion with a free item, they sold them separately in the market, which was from our point of view unethical; therefore, unaccepted.
RAMADAN IS ANY SUPERMARKET’S HIGH SEASON, WHAT PLANS DOES BEQALA. COM HAS IN STORE FOR ITS CUSTOMERS FOR THIS MONTH? For this Ramadan, we have a promotion called CashBack. All customers who purchased items the two months before can redeem their coupons. This allows our customer to pay much less for their Ramadan purchase.

WHAT IS PATTERN? “A pattern, apart from the term’s use to mean template, is a discernible regularity in the world or in a manmade design. As such, the elements of a pattern repeat in a predictable manner. A geometric pattern is a kind of pattern formed of geometric shapes and typically repeating like a wallpaper.” That was the Wikipedia definition for pattern; however, we definitely have something more to add. Patterns in art reveal a lot of meanings, emotions and mood. It holds within the style and theme or the general ambient of the place. Usually a pattern is a repetition of lines, shapes or drawings. However, very few styles repetition is not how it goes, so maybe a center point oriented pattern is the other choice or alternative.
reflects the overall flair. Places with no patterns or subtle colors usually look boring and cold; it’s said that patterns make the scene. If you are a good observer you will find that hospitals, governmental entities, offices, and libraries barely use patterns in furniture or interior design, that’s because most of the patterns set this informal mood. It also affects peoples taste a lot, so if you don’t like the pattern used in a certain area, it might give you the wrong impression about the whole place. Also, such places avoid patterns because it’s a bit more expensive, time consuming and usually don’t go with all styles. Nevertheless, you don’t want to be like them! I am sure you want to show off what you have from taste, style and art.
Nowadays in fashion, décor and art, patterns have a very effective role in playing the whole style thing. Also new trends are now mostly based on which pattern in which size, colors and wave. IS THERE THAT THING CALLED PATTERN CLASH? If you are not aware of different styles in décor and the patterns they resemble it will always be difficult to come up with strong style identity in your place. That’s why there is something called pattern clash. And that’s where the identity get lost when you try to set a theme; like for example when you add a classic floral print curtain while having a retro room or vice versa. However, only like 3 or 4 kinds of styles a pattern clash is not a sin. For instance, boho patterns are very popular, and clashing too many patterns is actually the style concept itself. Some oriental arts also dictate that the more you add patterns the more it get rich and interesting.

I have been coughing for 8-9 days. Any thoughts on if it’s just a cold or something more serious?
How can I get my baby to take naps in the morning?
Doctor’s Answer:
Babies can adapt just about any schedule but you have to be very methodical and very persistent. If you want a baby to go to sleep at a certain time, keep them awake for as long as possible before that time. But more importantly put them down for that nap at the same time every day. By the clock. Eventually they will adapt and get the idea. It may take a while. Be persistent.
If the cough is improving over time, it could be due to a viral upper respiratory infection. Other possible etiologies include bronchospasm from any etiology, gerd, nasal problem or a combination of factors. If you smoke, you need to quit.

When I’m angry I say whatever I like. It bursts suddenly and it is affecting my relationship a lot. Is there some simple practical way to calm me during that? Doctor’s Answer:
The first step is to become more aware. Try to identify those pre-anger feelings/triggers and practice slowing down. For some that might mean a deep breath, taking a walk, petting a dog, taking a time out, etc. Get your partner on board with your goals because it will be a process. Experiment with calming interventions and see what works for you.

How can I cover up my pimples without using makeup? Doctor’s Answer:
Visine; “it takes the red out” of more than just eyes, by constricting dilated blood vessels that cause redness. Use a q-tip to apply a few drops to your pimple to temporarily decrease redness. Aside from traditional makeup concealers, there are tinted acne spot treatments and green-tinted products (often used for rosacea) for hiding redness. Be sure to use noncomedogenic products.

A Fresh Mouth for
Ramadan
D
BY: Dr. Shady Samir
espite all the happiness and warmth that the holy month of Ramadan brings upon us, there are undeniable factors that fasting people suffer from, including hunger, thirst and the worst out of them all is bad breath. This condition, in medical terms, is called halitosis, which is the noticeable unpleasant odor of the breath. Nevertheless, bad breath can lead to a decrease in self-confidence and insecurity in social and intimate relations.
There are two types of bad breath causes: local causes and systemic causes. Causative factors within the mouth are termed local causes, whereas bad mouth breath may be the result of more serious factors such as diabetes, kidney disease, lung disease and stomach upset, which is known as systemic causes. In this article, we will be limiting our discussion to local causes only. How to avoid halitosis? Sometimes unpleasant smells coming from the mouth can be caused by rotten bits of food caught between the teeth and on the tongue. That is why, it is important to brush your teeth correctly, and most importantly regularly in order to have a fresh smelling breath. However, there are certain foods that create a problem, such as garlic, coffee and onions.
The following are some measures we can do to avoid bad breath: • Maintaining good oral hygiene. This includes brushing twice daily, gently cleaning your tongue with a tongue scraper and flossing to clean food impacted between teeth. • Drinking lots of water or fluids during evenings and suhoor, which prevents dehydration. • Mouthwash is acceptable in Ramadan as well, since you are not actually swallowing anything. However, you should stay away from alcohol-based mouthwashes, since they can dry out the mouth more and worsen the problem. How can my dentist help? If you do have bad breath, you will need to start a routine for keeping your mouth clean and fresh. Regular checkups will allow your dentist to watch out for any areas where plaque is caught between your teeth. Your dentist will be able to clean all those areas that are difficult to reach. S/he will also be able to show you the best way to clean your teeth and gums, and show you any areas you may be missing, including your tongue. Your dentist will also help you in getting treated for conditions like cavities, broken old fillings, spacing between teeth and gum swelling with bleeding. All these go along with preventing halitosis. To summarize, remember to brush your teeth normally during Ramadan, floss, or use mouthwash, and remember to drink plenty of water. Following these tips will help you avoid bad breath during Ramadan or other fasting times.

Eslam Abuali: Egypt’s Next Paralympic Champion
T
yet in a different way; so he joined the differently abled swimming team in Shooting Club. And no surprise with such drive, he conquered every challenge. He received the golden medal in the Egyptian National Swimming Championship in 2013 & 2014 for breast 50 m, silver medal for breast 50 m in the Egyptian Cup in 2013, in addition to bronze medal for back 50 m in the Egyptian National Swimming Championship in 2014.
After a year in rehabilitation, filled with ups and downs, Abuali proudly consider himself a “new man;” a stronger and totally independent man. He was able to find peace with the idea of being differently abled, and he wasn’t willing to let a wheelchair define him, and was definitely not willing for a society to dictate what he could or couldn’t do. After being released from the hospital, he shortly went back to his work as a senior recruiter, with the passion for sports still fired up in his heart; and that passion, he believes, was what’s keeping him alive. Abuali then decided to practice sports again
Now after getting so far ahead, Abuali’s dream is getting bigger and bigger; he is now aiming for the 2016 Paralympics in Brazil. He has been training nonstop, and was able to enhance his performance by 60% with minimal resources and facilities. His time in Breast 50 m was 1.47 minutes, yet in less than a year he managed to reach 1.07 minutes. In addition to the non-stop practice, Abuali believes that with the right support system, in terms of sufficient sponsorship, professional training programs and coaching, setting a clear plan and having international exposure, he will be able to develop his records promptly. With his hard work and hopeful perspective, Abuali has been seeking every opportunity he could get, not just to achieve his goal, but to rather set an example for those in similar situations, and let them know that the right set of mind together with courage and purpose could outweigh any physical capabilities.
he bigger the dream the harder you’ll have to work for it, and the longer it will take to turn it into reality. Sadly, many of us have the habit of giving up with the first bumpy road we face; we have become masters of excuses, but this is definitely not the case with Eslam Abuali; a sports’ savvy, whose passion has been put to the test. A test that left him paralyzed at the age of 23 after getting into a fatal accident back in 2012. And even though he had every reason to give up on life; instead, with a will power of steal, he managed to turn this unfortunate situation into a dream; a dream of being the first Egyptian to win a Paralympics’ medal in swimming in almost 20 years.

Ramadan 2014: Get your BURN ON BY: SAMIRA KHALIL
RAMADAN; the blessed month bringing goodness, spiritual enlightenment and inner peace. Ramadan is the month of social activities and gatherings among all Egyptians and of course FOOD! But let’s not forget about our bodies, health and overall personal goals. Whether it’s fat loss, muscle gain, or even weight maintenance, stay motivated and let’s GO!
66 | July 2014
Exercising during Ramadan A 1987 study affirms, “For any adult who is completely healthy, fasting for a period of 24 to 72 hours may not completely have any effects on the contraction of muscles.” Aim at moderate intensity workouts in Ramadan. Exercising during Ramadan is one of the best ways to maintain your routine. Having fixed working hours helps us all have some time for exercising. I usually exercise for 30-40 minutes one hour before iftar and after taraweeh prayer; I go for a 5-7 km run on a moderate pace. Having fixed time at work, school, etc. helps us maintain a well-balanced routine. Don’t give up and sleep all day! Regardless of your fitness level, make your goals simply to maintain where you are now. Consistency is the most important element in maintaining your fitness level. Combine both Cardio and resistance training during your workouts; I personally go for circuit training that is both enjoyable and time efficient. Example of Circuit Training: • 10-15 Push ups • 1 Minute Jumping rope • 10-15 Squat • 10 Burpees • 30 Sit ups
to nosh on. Head for the veggie platters, lean protein and fruit platters instead. Indulge Responsibly You don’t have to deprive yourself, but you have to earn it! Exercise daily on a moderate intensity at least 5 times a week so that you make sure you burn some calories. Pick only one thing you want to indulge on and go for a limited quantity. Nutrition and Exercise Rules for Ramadan: • Ramadan is not an excuse not to exercise. Exercising will get your metabolism booming and will make you feel more energized. Aim at 45 minutes/day. • Best time to exercise: 1 Hour before iftar or after iftar by 3 hours. • Make sure you eat nutrient dense food and drink a lot of water in sohoor and iftar. • Decrease the spices and strong flavors in your meals. Make it simple and healthy.
Weight Loss Ramadan can be the perfect timing to break any bad eating habits. Let’s accept the challenge and feed the body with high nutrient dense food (wholegrains, lean protien, healthy fats rather than sugars and sweets). When eating healthier foods that are richer in nutrients and less in calories, we will experience less hunger and we will be more active during fasting. Cut down on fats, high saturated processed food and fried dishes. Iftar Food Checklist • 3-5 Dates + skimmed milk • Fresh Salad + Vegetable soup • Lean Protein (Grilled Chicken, Lean beef) • Whole grain bread/pasta/basmati rice (optional) • WATER The Danger ZONE! Family and friends’ gatherings Station yourself far from the konafa bel manga, basbosa and mahshy! At most gatherings, you will find at least a couple of healthy or healthier choices July 2014 | 67

Super Food...
Barley
• You’ll most likely spot two types of barley in your local grocery store: hulled and pearled. Barley health benefits are present in both forms, but pearled barley has, in essence, been “peeled” of multiple layers, and has fewer nutrients than the hulled version. • Barley and other whole grains are rich sources of magnesium, a mineral that acts as a co-factor for more than 300 enzymes, including enzymes involved in the body’s use of glucose and insulin secretion. • One cup of barley has around 6 grams of fiber, which supports good health and some claims suggest 68 | July 2014

promoting a healthy and responsive nervous system, and it also improves the speed and alertness of brain activity. It helps improve the digestive system as it contains soluble and insoluble fibers and different kinds of amino acids. They are rich source of protein, dietary fiber and rich in vitamin B1, B2, B3 and B5 along with vitamin A1 and C. The significant amounts of minerals found in dates make it a super food for strengthening bones and fighting off painful and debilitating diseases like osteoporosis. Studies have shown that dates are even beneficial for increasing sexual stamina.

it can even help prevent colon cancer. • The soluble fiber found in this healthy food dissolves and binds with fatty acids in the body. This can lower total cholesterol levels and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. • Eating foods high in insoluble fiber, such as barley, can help women avoid gallstones. • Copper, another trace mineral supplied by barley, is also necessary for the activity of lysyl oxidase, an enzyme involved in cross-linking collagen and elastin, both of which provide the ground substance and flexibility in blood vessels, bones and joints.
Foods that help you stay full.
Fix with Food
Fill up on fewer calories because low-density foods contain a lot more water, which adds weight and volume to the food, but no calories. Eat more broth-based soups like chicken noodle or vegetable. Eat more leafy greens like lettuce, baby spinach and mixed salad greens. Eat more fruits like apples, blueberries, cantaloupe, grapefruit, oranges, peaches, strawberries and watermelon. Eat more nonstarchy vegetables like asparagus, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, celery, cucumbers, tomatoes and winter squash. Moreover, consuming even a little bit of protein with each of your meals and snacks will help you stay full.

A Problem and Solution Model to
Eating Right this Ramadan BY: Noura Hassaballa
I
t’s midday and you don’t even have the energy to speak, so you decide to make up an excuse at work, tell your boss “sorry, but I have a family emergency and I really need to go.” Are you going to be doing this 90% of the time? Or call in sick every other day, just cause you can’t get out of bed?
It seems that everyone this year is confused and concerned about what to do during this month of Ramadan, especially that it started in such a boiling hot weather. But why do we usually get stuck with the problem and not the solution to just fix it and get it over with? I won’t be ranting much about what you should and shouldn’t eat during this month because you will find it in last year’s issue; rather, I will list common problems and solutions to solve them. Ready? Here we go….
70 | July 2014
PROBLEM: Binge eating; feeling lethargic during the day. SOLUTION: Overeating and stuffing yourself during Iftar is the number one reason why you feel so tired the next day, also the first one to two hours after breaking your fast. First, you are not giving the body enough time to digest and metabolize all this food. Second, the sugar levels in your blood are on a roller coaster ride, where they don’t know when to stabilize. That’s why you should break your fast on something light like soups, dates (3 only), and fluids with no added sugar, to give your tummy a signal to start working correctly and efficiently. Overloading your digestive system suddenly with food with no prior indicator for it to start working after you have been fasting for over 14 hours causes you to feel irritable and causes your -sugar levels to spike suddenly making you feel the way you do everyday.
PROBLEM: Dehydration; because the time is so short between Iftar and Suhoor we usually tend to drink little to no fluids. SOLUTION: Drink plenty of fluids, preferably water to keep your body hydrated during the day. The reason you wake up with severe headaches and migraines is because your body is low on fluids as well as eating foods that are high in sugar the night before. Stay away from foods and drinks that are high in sodium, because it will make you thirsty and cause your body to retain water as well. With the hot weather and over perspiration, your body loses water causing sodium levels to be concentrated leaving you thirsty.
PROBLEM: Lack of sleep.
PROBLEM: Wrong Suhoor or no Suhoor at all.
SOLUTION: When you tamper with your sleeping
SOLUTION: Either you are too lazy to wake up for
time because you sleep past midnight, you are basically messing up your biological clock. Sleeping at the wrong time of the day and not getting enough sleep causes your body to store more fats. Ghrelin is the hormone that signals hunger telling you when to eat. Leptin is the hormone that signals satiety and give you the feeling of fullness. When you are sleep deprived, your body releases ghrelin making you feel hungry while leptin is not being released in adequate amounts to assure you that you are full.
Suhoor, or you are eating the wrong type of food at the wrong time of the night; in both cases you are making the situation worse. Having this meal will prevent fatigue and headaches during daytime. It preserves energy for fasting during the day, prevents muscle loss, and maintains sugar levels while fasting. Your meal should consist of complex carbs, proteins, and veggies with controlled portions. If you don’t feel like having a small meal, try to have at least a snack such as yogurt, unsalted nuts, a fruit, or any light snack. July 2014 | 71

Love & Relationships
Love’s Triple “Treat”
Women’s Entrapment and the Substitutions of Love
L
by: Lauren K. Clark
ove, a word that embodies the essence of the most dynamic, intricate, and alluring flower garden. The feeling of touch, and the ecstasy that runs through our bodies when we are engulfed with the most passionate of kisses. This thing called love is supposedly an embodiment of two spirits, coming together to manifest itself, known as creation. And after all, isn’t love, a scientific concoction of two energy sources, whose very existence brings forth a volcanic eruption to ignite, and spread this massive euphoria to the very existence of others? And yet, the modern world has conflicted the being of this word with qualities that do not truthfully honor its very purpose.
For women, that feeling of being desired, to have our very secrets revealed through intimacy, and for a man to connect with the mystery of the feminine spirit, through the artistry of making love, is one manifestation of God’s love. However, it seems that humanity has removed itself from this once archaic art. The spirit has come to be removed from love, and we have come to be left with false infatuations of its being. And then comes the dependency factor. For in today’s modern age, the expression of love has come in the form of providing the basic essentials of life. Yet, in this regard, the provider has come into a position of authority; whereas the receiver is subjugated. Far from the reigns of equal reciprocity, boundless from power hierarchies, love has come to mean survival and legitimacy of female identity and womanhood. And for many, it is just that. Maintaining the perception of love in a loveless relationship have become too common. The illusion of inclusion; or rather the illusion that one is being in love, as opposed to using its presence to justify an attachment. One of the sheer tragedies is the fact that marriage, or coupledom, has become a matter of convenience. One aspect of convenience is image; it seems that one of the major challenges is for women to appear as if they have everything together. Wanting to appease the approval of family members, friends, and society, while their marriage or partnership is literally, falling apart. The humility of infidelity, and failure at a relationship is one of the most painful realities for women. One of the major aspects of the image is that it provides a false hope of feeling as if you are in control of your partnership. The painstaking reality of having your secrets exposed that you are no longer loved, or can bring back the love, once shared is detrimental to a woman’s femininity and self-esteem. Our second variable of convenience takes us into the
76 | July 2014
world of security. As much as we like to envision a world where love is void of a person’s financial possessions, and monetary worth, we know that is not the reality that we live in. It is not a secret that many women marry, for the financial benefits, and the social status that comes with it. The option of not worrying about life’s basic essentials is one of the key “perks” for many. Simultaneously, it also becomes the entrapment for those women lacking economic and social support. Having no skills, education, or sufficient mechanisms of acquiring income, when the love dies, the prison can begin. For it is only in staying with this person, that a woman can survive economically, or maintain the high-class lifestyle. And finally, loneliness. Yes, that evil, nagging voice returns reminding you that having a man, is better than none at all. In a world, where a woman’s worth is based on her attachment to a male companion, it’s not a surprise that loveless relationships would be tolerated. A “lonely” woman is presumed a stain onto society, because she “could not attract a man.” It is also in her loneliness, where she is presumed defenseless; void of male protection. This adds fear in her being able to survive in a man’s world. It is the opposite for the single man, who is presented to society as the sexy bachelor, and the epitome of woman’s desire. The strains in sustaining a loveless marriage or partnership are all too unbearable for so many women. Yet, the decision in remaining in these circumstances, portrays a greater visibility on the priorities of society. Love has become a luxury, not a necessity. Sadly enough, the authenticity of love has been removed from the ideal of what it means to truly love someone. Few are privy to its pleasures. For if such were false, then the options for women to exit a loveless partnership would be plenty. When the love has gone, survival mode sets in. But maybe, just maybe. . . it was never, really there.

Bettina Knows Best…
Should my Friends have a Say in my Relationships? Dear Bettina,
I
have a group of close friends that are really dear to my heart and whom I blindly trust, and I am used to taking their opinion about almost every decision I make, including my relationships. The problem is that they always criticize my choice especially when it comes to choosing a partner, and because I trust them, I can’t help but being influenced by their views, which consequently affects my relationships and might even be the reason why I ended some of them. So I want to know how could I manage this, and to what extent should they be involved in my relationships in general? Sincerely, L.S.
BY: BETTINA HEMMINGSEN Dear L.S, Thanks a lot for your letter. Your question is very complex but by rephrasing it a bit you could also ask: How do I learn to allow myself to be different from others? Or How do I learn to hold onto myself in an intense emotional relationship whether it’s in love or friendships? To answer this we need to look at the ability to differentiate ourselves. The differentiated person is solid but permeable; this allows you to remain close even when your partner or friends try to mold or manipulate you. When you have a solid core of values and beliefs, you can change without losing your identity. Our basic level of differentiation is established in adolescence by poorly differentiated parents that try to pressure their children for togetherness or distance, which stops children from developing their ability to think, feel and act for themselves. They learn to conduct themselves only in reaction to others. The level of differentiation tends to stay form one generation to another unless a family member is motivated to differentiate her/him-self. We always pick friends and partners who are at the same level of differentiation as we are and if they are not, the relationship usually breaks up early. So I suggest you have a serious talk with your friends about how you can all grow both as individuals and as a group if you become more aware of the quality of differentiating. If you feel you need to explore the issue further you are always welcome to contact me directly on www. bettinahemmingsen.com

Are you RAISING A BULLY
ullying is one of the major ongoing issues that affect kids, teenagers, and even adults around the world. Bullying can take several forms; there is verbal bullying, the more intense physical bullying, and the widely growing cyber bullying. Regardless of its type, bullying will always have its negative outcome on its victims. According to studies, victims of bullying are much more likely to commit suicide as a result of the harassment they face, and generally, people usually focus on the victims’ part rather than the offender. Yet we also find it important to discuss the bullies and the motives behind their acts, because only by understanding such behavior, we could learn how to handle it, treat it, and hopefully prevent it someday.
Parents should know that bullying is not that easy to notice, and that they should pay extra attention for their kid’s behavior and actions in order to discover it; however, there are certain signs that could guide them:
80 | July 2014
• If your child shows increased signs of aggressiveness, whether projected towards you or his/her siblings, there is a great possibility s/he would do the same to his schoolmates and friends. Also, signs might include interest in violent movies or video games. • If your child shows weakness in certain aspects, he could probably cover it up and get over it through humiliating those who are better than him/her. • Studies have also shown that most bullies were/are probably victims of bullying. So the fact that your kid comes crying for you doesn’t necessarily indicate s/he’s the only injured party in the situation. • Peer pressure plays a great factor in that subject as well. If your child’s friends are bullies and harassers, s/he would probably act like them in order to fit in and feel acceptable. • If you notice your kid possessing new items and belongings, it could be an indication of bullying, as he may have taken those things from someone forcefully. • Popularity is always an important issue for bullies. They usually care too much about how they look and if they socially fit with the “cool bunch,” and they would go to extremes to maintain this powerful reputation, even if it means hurting others. • Bullies also find it hard to take responsibility for their actions, and they have the habit of blaming others for their wrong doings. • Studies conducted that children with sleeping problems have more tendencies to show aggression and irritation towards others as well. • Violence at home is also a key indication. Children often copy the acts of their parents outside home. Acts of hostility at home could be transformed into acts of bullying in schoolyards.
Now that you know the signs, here is what you have to do to prevent it: • Don’t fall in the trap of thinking that “kids will be kids,” and that it’s just a phase. Yes, some kids luckily are mature enough to manage their actions, but many others don’t. A child bully could soon be a teenage bully and even an adult bully; keeping in mind that with age the childish teasing could turn into crimes. So rule #1: Never discard it. • Rapid response is a must. You have to communicate and convey the seriousness of bullying. Let them know that what they’re doing is unacceptable and have severe consequences. • After effective communication, put some rules regarding the subject and enforce punishments in case your child breaks them.
• Be a role model. Even if you’re going through trouble at home, and not getting along with your spouse, don’t let your kid listen to your arguments, or catch you name calling or talking down to your partner. • Children at a young age are not fully aware of the magnitude of their actions and its consequences, and that’s why it’s essential that parents clearly explain the scale of bullying to their children. • If your child is acting out through bullying to cover up a certain defect in their behavior, or in their life generally, then it’s important to deal with that first. For instance, if your kid is not good at sports, you need to sit him/her down and let him/her know it’s okay and help him/her figure out other aspects that s/he could excel at. • Teach your child how to act in various situations, and to express their feelings appropriately. Teach them to act right instead of acting out. • Asking for help from school doesn’t make you a bad parent. Go to your child’s teacher, school counselor, coach, or any other figure that would help you out in managing this behavior. • Keep monitoring your kid’s behavior and actions. Make sure you encourage and reward him/her when they do well and improve. Bullying is like a chronic disease. If you don’t discover it early, and do what it takes to confine it, it might spread out through your child’s whole life.

You’ll be wanting to throw the best Iftar in order to impress and have a great time. The number of the people you’re inviting should be on the top of your list, if you’re aiming to do everything on your own. According to Khalil, the maximum number of invitees should be from 15 to 20 persons. If the number exceeds, you’ll need a professional kitchen, and a staff to help you out.
The secret to having a great, yet affordable gathering is to cut down your menu. Khalil says that Egyptians usually fill the table with all types of food at gatherings, which is not correct, neither is it chic to do so. He says that you should have two types of soup, preferably one of them vegetable soup. He also recommends that guests break their fast with soup, rather than dates, as it’s healthier; however, dates and milk to break your fast is nice as another option as well. You should have two types of carbohydrates, maybe pasta and rice. Opt for Basmati rice, as it’s much lighter than Egyptian rice. Choose one or two types of protein, ideally not fish as it makes you very thirsty. Khalil urges to have a pure vegetable plate without any additions on your table. Nevertheless, do not forget your salads; go for green salad, and a chef salad. Also, have a table for kids, where it should have different food, such as pasta, burgers, etc.
The Substitutes However, if you’re aiming to invite a larger number of people, Khalil says that it’s more important than the chef to have substitutes, who are the waiters, and most importantly, stewards in order to take care of all the hassle in the kitchen which usually causes a lot of pressure.
House Setting Ramadan means oriental. That’s why, Khalil advises every woman to decorate her home with different oriental touches from arabesque table napkins to big Ramadan lanterns. Overall, to give it that Ramadan feeling with her simple twist. He also recommends that waiters dress in an oriental custom as well, rather than the normal black and white suit.
Seatings Whether your gathering is in your house or garden, you need to seat people who will automatically click next to each other. Garden table sets should be very elegant. Khalil says that table sets could be rented in order to keep it affordable, as a house won’t have enough tables for a garden gathering.
As for deserts, Khalil says that it’s always better to have two or three types of deserts, if possible one of them should be western, while the others are oriental.
Post Food A Ramadan gathering is not all about food, the sitting after food is where all the memories are formed. Khalil says that you should open your TV for your guests and have reachable coffee and tea at all time for them. When all of this is over, I’m sure your guests will be leaving with wide smiles and satisfied tummies.
Tablewear As you seek to make your guests feel special, you should use fancy tablewear, something impressive. Khalil argues that table napkins must be very chic, simple and of high quality. You should also go for napkins that are made of fabric. He says that usually tablewears come in sets, which is much better and easier.
Lighting In any gathering, lighting is crucial, Khalil says. He recommends opting for lampshades and ditching chandeliers as they give a tense feeling to the place, which is something you should stay away from.

must try Repetto Eau de Parfum Takes the Stage This fragrance expresses intense femininity. Perfume Designer Olivier Polge has kept the sensitive soul of the original formula, a refined, elegant and modern rose softened by comforting vanilla bean, refreshed by crispy pear and a cherry blossom harmony. In the Eau de Parfum, pear is replaced by an even juicier plum top note. The powdery effect of cherry blossom gives a velvety, almond-like aspect to the middle note. Petal after petal, the rose opens on skin and mixes with the scent of orange blossom. But the base notes are the ones which lead this perfume to the oriental family of scents, also known as the ambers. July 2014 | 85

Cancer Fashion Sense By nature, Cancers are conservative. However, don’t let that conservative exterior fool you. Underneath a classical and traditional look, may lie a surprise of luxurious lingerie. they like to keep their look based on their mood of the day. A vintage style is very appealing to a Cancer. Both in clothing and accessories, they enjoy pieces that are sentimental and have meaning. Cancer Hairstyle These girls like to have nice hair that is essentially prim and proper. Straightening their hair might be something that appeals to them, as this makes their hair clean, neat and stand out too. Ultimately, the best hairstyle for Cancer girls would be a bob style, where she would cut it to fit and frame her face to perfection. In addition, a bob hair style is short and bangs are accompanied to the face as well. What’s it like to date a Cancer woman The Cancer woman is a very sensual woman with deep emotions and passion brewing underneath the exterior. To reach these will require time, patience and tenderness. Do not expect to have her open up to you right away and jump into a relationship. She will not make the first move and will not be forward with you, you have to do all the work. Do not try to lead her on because Cancer woman is very in-tune with a person’s motivations and she will see right through you. Trust is the single most important thing to Cancer. If you ever betray her trust, you might as well move on. What’s it like to date a Cancer man The Cancer man will not be direct with you. He will approach you cautiously and slowly. He will be very romantic, flirty and attempt to court you and win your heart with lavish gifts and attention. The reason he will never be direct with you is that he has a strong underlying fear of rejection. If you are interested in a Cancer man, you will probably have to make the first move and ask him on a date. He falls in love easily and will make you his whole world. Once you “belong to him,” he will hold on to you and can become quite jealous and possessive. Cancer Erogenous Zone The greatest erogenous zone for Cancer is the chest and the breasts. Both women and men respond well to light sucking and kissing of the nipples. You must caress these areas delicately and softly. Never be rough. Stroke your fingers through Cancer man’s chest hair, lightly and gently this will ignite the firey passion hidden behind the shell. 90 | July 2014
