Flip-Flops It’s time to show some toes, it’s flip-flop time! Summer is all about exposure, and by exposure I don’t mean showing skin! I mean showing the best in you… The hidden things you have but do not dare to show, the things you long for others to see in you. Take the summer season to work on your flip-flop personality! EXPOSE and don’t be afraid, expose and have fun, expose and remember that truly nothing matters but your happiness... Live this summer as free as flip-flops; as their vibrant colors, as their flexible feeling, and as easy as they are to dig in for almost every occasion! Next time you go summer shopping, buy a new pair of flip-flops and make your resolution to be as practical as them, as radiant, and as easy going… You will live summer time to the fullest! Living like a flip-flop is my resolution for summer 2013! It’s what will make this summer an enjoyable and self-developing season until the next time I dig into my boots! Dedicated to Farah Asfour :)

Two Young Emerging Designers Straight out of FDC
Kashtura by Asmaa El Gameel facebook.com/Kashtura
What does fashion mean to you? Fashion is a lifestyle, culture and trend. Does designing only need talent or education too? Of course designing needs both talent and education. What’s the greatest inspiration that drove you to start your own business? Unfortunately my greatest inspiration was a little bit dramatic and sad. I took my decision to study and work as a fashion designer after l lost my dear parents. Being shocked and depressed, I realized that I must get involved in something I really love and I started my own business then. How was your start in the fashion field? First I graduated from the Faculty of Applied Arts, Graphic Design major, then l worked as an art instructor at a gallery. However, through these years I had a talent and passion for fashion so l decided to use this gift in a practical way so I completed the designing diploma at the Fashion & Design Center. My first collection was in 2010 with a theme about the sculptor Paul Aichele. Do you prefer sketching designs or actually constructing them? I mostly prefer sketching designs but I have practical know-how in pattern making and construction.
How would you define your city’s fashion? I think Egypt was always late to balance out with the newest fashion trends but I feel it’s a little on track now. What irritates you the most? People still don’t believe in the Egyptian fashion designers’ talents, they don’t give them chances and good offers so they usually end up working individually. What tips could you give to the new and young generation of fashion designers? Study fashion and support your talent, research, develop your designs, work at a fashion company to get experience and never lose opportunities and chances.

She by Shereen Elbegermy facebook.com/SHEdesigns How did you start your career? I started my private business back in 2011 with passion for elegant clothing matching modern styles. I have always been into fashion and it has always been a dream for me to pursue a career in the fashion industry. But it wasn’t until December 2008 that this dream started to become a reality when I began my designer/stylist diploma at Istituto di Moda Burgo, FDC, Egypt. Does designing need talent or education? Definitely it needs talent, but that talent must be polished by studying. That’s why I studied fashion design, pattern making and draping techniques to develop my talent. What is the greatest inspiration that drove u to start your own business and what obstacles did you face? I discovered my passion for designing clothes and creating inspired garments through clothes itself and my own concept of mixing and matching items and from people in my circle who used to ask me about anything related to clothes or colours. Since that time I recognized that I have taste and an eye for details. The obstacles were in marketing my collection, finding unique fabrics in the Egyptian market and being able to acquire my needs in small quantities for my small business. How would you define your city’s fashion? There is a big evolution of fashion in Egypt, and now we have lots of new fashion schools and great creative Egyptian designers whose work I admire. What does fashion mean to you? Fashion is a vision to create stylish art pieces that allow everyone to enjoy the beauty of creativity. It helps me to express myself. Fashion and clothing are cultural artefacts, they tell you so much about people at any place. I am constantly coming up with new ideas and being
inspired by my surroundings to create new items which not only make a statement, but also represent the people wearing them. What was the first item of clothing you ever designed? I made my first design ever when I was 10 years old. It was a dress for a wedding, I didn’t draw it, but I described it to the tailor and I told my mom how I want it to look like. It was awesome but of course wasn’t for my age and I assume that I was inspired that time by Disney princesses. However, professionally my first design was in 2008, a double-faced vest and I made it from A to Z. I drew the design, made the pattern and sewed it myself. Do you prefer sketching designs or actually constructing them? I prefer sketching designs because I have passion for drawing and art and I like to spend my time in drawing. When designing, I have a picture in my mind for a woman like myself that I want to reflect my vision of how a beautiful and stylish piece of garment looks like on her. What tips could you give to the new and young generation of fashion designers? Draw your inspiration from anything and expose yourself to as many cultures as you can.
FDC Egypt, @ Berlin Project Launch consultancies within 6 months duration for the young emerging fashion designers of both Burgo Institute and Helwan University. At the 1st quarter of 2013, Fashion & Design Center has announced the launch of this significant Berlin project targeting to promote,
support and educate young talented fashion designers and train trainers by exhibiting and showcasing their creative and innovative Winter’13 collections in the Cairo Fashion Art booth at the Import Shop Berlin Exhibition in Germany in November 2013.

Summer Makeup Trends Are Pure 60’s Inspired!
T
he 60’s is a massive inspiration to fashion for this spring summer, particularly when it comes to makeup. If there’s any update you would do this season to your hair and makeup, make it with this trend. Liner, hollowed out eye sockets and separated lash; definitely a modern day Twiggy. The influence of the Swinging Sixties on spring/summer 2013’s catwalk beauty was apparent everywhere from Louis Vuitton to Chanel. However, this is a youthful and girlish take on 60’s beauty, with pouting nude lips paired with liner in the crease of the eye lids at Marc Jacobs, and silver eyes at Chanel looking like they came straight out of Andy Warhol's Factory. Glossy peach eyes at Louis Vuitton modernized the look, whilst the bold swoops of eye liner at Michael Kors were updated in aquamarine and acid green. And, for full-on sixties style, the Moschino models wore their lips dripping with orange gloss and their eyes framed by Bambi lashes - an undeniable homage to that decade. Judging by the recent autumn/winter 2013-14 shows, this trend looks set to be around for at least another season, so invest in a nude gloss now and prepare to get creative with your liquid liner, 60’s beauty is going nowhere fast!
marc jacobs
Louis Vuitton SS13 show in Paris caused a stir with a completely sixties inspired look. Models wore pretty 60’s makeup with a swipe of orange to compliment the brightly colored, checked clothes. One of the most striking sixties looks of the season, Louis Vuitton makeup centered around glossy peach eyes, pink lips and lots of mascara - the perfect complement to the retro up-dos. Catwalk makeup at the Chanel SS13 was a sixties look with a modern metallic twist for an updated and current beauty look. Heavily-lined eyes were painted with solid silver shadow and offset by peachy pale lips.
Louis Vuitton 38 |
| June 2013
Louis Vuitton
One of my big favorites; at Mary Katrantzou, where lips are treated to a healthy slick of glossy conditioner whilst creating feline eyes with MAC's Pro
Marine Ultra Chromographic Pencil and Pro Blue and Crimson Lipmix for a glossy finish. A subtle and wearable nod to the sixties. Moschino Psychedelic sixties beauty for the girl at town – lips painted a glossy orange and framed eyes with the longest of lashes, the perfect partners for retro back-combed hairstyles. Marc Jacobs, I love this look! Again the sixties look is given an update. Strong brows, a dark socket and pale lips made the beauty look iconic for the season. François Nars based the Marc Jacobs makeup on sixties girl Edie Sedgwick, so eyes were the focus, with black liner drawn into the crease of the lids and lashings of NARS' Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara on both top and bottom lashes. Bold, filled-in brows and pale lips finished the look.
Michael Kors
Michael Kors showed a classic sixties floating line in the crease of models' lids, but updated in bold blue and green. Skin was luminous but not dewy, whilst lashes were treated to a few coats of Shiseido's Perfect Mascara Full Definition (of course there was mascara, this is the sixties we're talking about).

Faces of Egypt
Amina Metwally Makeup Artist
By: Caroline Coussa
Tell us about yourself. Born and raised a proud Egyptian, I graduated from the Faculty of Arts with a Mass Communication degree. My two passions in life are travelling and makeup. What made you think of becoming a makeup artist? I grew up watching my mum who had impeccable sense of style and exotic beauty. I remember I used to watch Sophia Lauren’s movies with her and all I wanted to do was imitate her remarkable eyeliner makeup! That was when I started buying my first makeup kits and experimenting on myself and my friends. As I grew older, I started doing some favors for friends and family whether it was a birthday treat or a prom look. It wasn’t until I was in Sephora in Paris with my two best friends as they watched me willing to spend 5 hours between the makeup isles than touring the Louvre that they said, “You seriously need to do this for a living.” This inspired me to get certified as a freelance makeup artist from the Academy of Freelance Makeup (AOFM) in London where thankfully I got the chance to be taught by the very best in the industry. What’s different about your makeup style? My principle has always been “fresh, radiant and happy.” My work is hugely based on the foundation of skin preparation versus layering 46 |

up to cover and that’s why I manage to give my clients that beautiful natural look. did you face any challenges in your work as a makeup artist? Getting outside my comfort zone and learning a completely new art in a foreign country was definitely hard. Moreover, the makeup business in Egypt is growing and is very competitive. So sometimes it feels like I had to learn freelance makeup, marketing and finance all at the same time. But in fact, those challenges motivated me and helped me achieve my dream. What’s your greatest motivation? There is nothing that motivates me more than a happy customer. Also, feedback in general is the best motivation to anyone. What’s your latest news? I’m starting a makeover course to motivate women and help them feel better about themselves by knowing how to apply makeup on self and show them the Do’s and Don’ts. One-to-one classes are also a work in progress. What are your favorite makeup brands? I love MAC, it’s my number one choice when it comes to makeup, but I also use Make Up For Ever and Maybelline. For creams and primers, I use Benefit; it is like magic! Can you give the readers some makeup tips? Good makeup starts with a good foundation. Take good care of your skin by drinking lots of water, always wear your day cream with sunscreen and starting from age 25 start using anti-aging day/ night cream. When it comes to makeup colors, be daring this summer with bold colored lips from red, orange and pink. Late 60s and 70s cat eye makeup is back so ladies use your eyeliner!

something challenging and creative, I decided to go for it and I took fashion design and pattern making classes. Life is so unpredictable, it’s full of all these twists and turns and you never know where you’ll end up. What’s unique about your pieces? Women who manage to look beautiful seemingly without effort and without looking overly fussed fascinate me. I find simplicity a very effective fashion statement that is often overlooked. My design aesthetic is all about creating pieces that compliment and help to bring out a woman’s unique natural beauty without being too overwhelming or attention seeking.
Noha Ata Fashion Designer By: Caroline Coussa Tell us about yourself and what you do. I graduated from the American University in Cairo in 2010 with a Bachelor’s degree in Integrated Marketing Communication and a minor in Fine Arts. I see fashion as a means of self-expression and a way of opening yourself up to the world by revealing your personality, thoughts, feelings and what inspires you. It shouldn’t be intimidating or inaccessible; it should be fun! What made you think of becoming a fashion designer? I’ve had a passion for the arts for as long as I can remember whether it was painting, photography or graphic design. I took a course called Fashion and Film, which was offered by the Art department at AUC where we basically took a look at fashion history through film. It was one of the most interesting, inspirational classes I’d taken and was in many ways responsible for my passion to pursue fashion design as a career. Sometime after I graduated, I decided to throw ‘practicality’ out the window and dream bigger. Before, fashion always seemed like this unattainable dream to me. When I realized that I needed to do 48 |

Of course, you faced various obstacles in your work, tell us about that. It’s been a learning process and I’ve definitely had my share of speed bumps along the way. It’s one thing to come up with an interesting design and another to turn it into a reality. What’s your greatest motivation? To me there is no greater motivation than to do something that I’m passionate about and that challenges
me. And of course, my extremely supportive family and friends who have been with me every step of the way and who inspire and encourage me everyday. What’s upcoming? My first collection, which is coming out this SS013, is very soft, subtle, sweet, young, and playful. I’m generally very drawn to vintage clothing and classic feminine silhouettes, especially from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. I explored this dream girl concept, which was heavily inspired by the Lisbon sisters from The Virgin Suicides. I wanted that feeling of effortless, ethereal beauty to come across so I used a muted color palette, delicate floral prints, and dainty laces. How would you define the Cairo fashion scene? I actually think it’s a really exciting time for fashion in Cairo. Despite the current political situation, the fashion scene here has really evolved over the last few
years and a new generation of young talents is emerging. I keep hearing about all these new fashion events, schools, competitions, blogs and magazines. More people are interested in studying fashion design and starting their own labels. I am very excited to be a part of it! Who are some of your favorite designers? Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana, Chloe, MiuMiu, Alice McCall, Suno New York, and Free People. What do you believe makes a quality garment? A quality garment is one that brings a sense of joy to both its creator and its owner. What matters to you most as a fashion designer? Attention to detail, quality, consistency, staying true to myself and making women feel beautiful. What inspires you? Art, beautiful and confident women or women in general, old movies, nature, travel, street style, etc.

Mohammed Taha Fashion Designer By: Caroline Coussa Tell us about yourself. My name is Mohammed Taha, I’m 25 years old, I was born in Suez and I studied at the Faculty of Commerce at Suez Canal University. I grew up in a family that loved art and they supported me a lot. I adored fashion design since I was 10. I self-studied fashion design at home because Suez had no fashion schools. Then I participated in a competition at the Fashion & Design Center (FDC) in Cairo where I came in third place and I showcased my designs in Prêt-à-Porter Paris. What made you think of becoming a fashion designer? I realized that I had design ideas in my head when I was 10 and at 11 years old, I started to draw those designs. Many things affected me, like the surrounding environment and my family and their love of art. I had a great interest in clothes, fabrics, thread and needle. Also nature’s beauty in Port Tawfiq where I grew up inspired me and helped me to be an artist with a vision. 50 |

Milene Farid Fashion Designer By: Caroline Coussa Tell us about yourself and what you do. I am an enthusiastic young Egyptian lady, ambitious, self-confident and motivated person. I studied in a French school then I studied commerce and accounting at Ain Shams University. First, I worked in the airline field for few years, but then, I decided to have a complete career change to fulfill my fasciation with fashion and design. I worked as an assistant to one of the most famous designers in Egypt -Marie Louis, Bishara- and during my work with her, I learned a lot about design and fashion industry. I had the chance to attend the fashion week in Paris for four consecutive seasons, then I decided to study fashion design, pattern and draping in the Fashion & Design Center (FDC). Recently, I have been working on developing my own brand name in the fashion design. How did you become a fashion designer? Since I was 14 years old, I’ve used to add my own personal touches on my own clothes... I never wear a costume as it is, I always mix pieces and colors. Also my first career gave me an opportunity to travel to Paris more than eight times a year and I became mad about the big names there in the world of fashion. What’s unique about your brand? My brand reflects simplicity and comfort with a feminine
look. My favorite part is playing with color tones and how to use them in new cuts and shapes to highlight the piece and make it a unique one. have you faced any difficulties in your career in the fashion field. I don’t call them difficulties, I call them opportunities. I believe that creativity has no limits and having to mix that belief with reality can sometimes be difficult. Then comes the pattern making and modifications that need patience and many trials. The last challenge is the finishing that turns a simple piece of cloth to a quality outfit on which I’m proud to put my name. What’s your greatest motivation? Creativity... Creating a collection of more than 30 pieces, same inspiration and different look for each with a brand identity. What’s your latest news? The launching of my Spring/Summer 2013 full resort collection. So I will present fashion for beachwear in a form of sets, swimwear with dresses and bags, in addition to glamorous evening wear. Faces of Egypt
Dalia Naguib Fashion Designer By: Caroline Coussa Why did you choose a career in fashion design? Since I was a child, I used to play around with the items in my wardrobe and mix and match to create different outfit combinations. Later, I used to help my friends with choosing their clothes. Then after I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, I worked as a stylist and then decided to study fashion so I could implement my designs and create my own fashion label. What differentiates your designs from those of other designers? I’ve always been heavily influenced by cultures with
deep rooted origins bringing back culture identity in fashion but in a modern way and mixing more than one style in one outfit like matching oriental patterns with a sporty piece. what’s the most difficult part of your work? Finding quality fabrics here in Egypt and finding skilled workers to bring my designs to life. What inspires you the most? Listening to music, watching other designers’ work and travelling to a place that could give me some inspiration. How would you define your city’s fashion? People are showing a greater interest in fashion and are more concerned with their appearance, but I feel that we live in a very trend-driven age and that we should try to break free from that and find our own unique style as Egyptians that sets us apart from the rest of the world. What are some of your accomplishments as a designer? Professionally I’ve just started my career and working on my first collection.
Who are some of your favorite designers? Dolce & Gabbana, Balmain, and Suno New York. What do you believe makes a quality item of clothing? One with a unique design, comfortable to wear, and of high quality. How would you define your personal style? My style is highly influenced by bohemian and hippy fashion. I love mixing patterns and putting together bold outfit combinations. What other experience do you have in the fashion industry? I worked as a stylist for a while for cinema and advertising. It was a great experience and styling is where I find myself. What are your favorite patterns? I like many patterns but I love paisley prints best. What’s new or upcoming? Now I’m working on my first collection which is inspired by oriental Egyptian patterns with plain fabrics. It is ready-to-wear collection. You can comfortably wear it with a very special unique look. colors of the spectrum.
Apply the character of the coast to your home’s exterior with beach house-style architecture and accents of vibrant color.
Choose White
Crisp whites combined with punches of bright colors immediately transport you to the coast. Aqua accents in pillows, a rug in mimic ocean’s dazzling blues, and the pops of bright orange are magnificent hues of the setting sun.
If color isn’t your thing, take your palette to the other extreme by keeping all of your surfaces, from ceiling to floor, a refreshing white. Details such as painted wood floors and beaded-board cabinet fronts add casual beach house styling. Warm wood accents, a navy tile backsplash, and stainless steel accents add a simple layer of color and texture that gives a sophisticated look.
Keep it Light and Bright
Bring the Outdoors In
Choose a Sunny Palette
Don’t be afraid to use strong color in big, unexpected ways. Plenty of sunlight, additional white cabinetry, and warm wood floors balance the bright aqua.
Be Bold Beach dwellers are never fearful of a little color, so don’t be afraid to try more vibrant hues in order to achieve a coastal feel in your home. A porch is a perfect place to try out some colors you normally would never consider. If painting your woodwork feels like too much, then just incorporate color with your furniture. Adirondack chairs are readily available in all
Create your own serene getaway, wicker lounge chairs surrounded by lush plants and coastal shrubbery transport you to the coast without you ever having to set foot outside your home.
Create a Pretty Garland Using twine, create a garland of seashells, starfish, and any of your other coastal treasures. Attach the shells and starfish to the twine using additional pieces of thinner twine. If needed, use a small drill to make the holes in the shells. Hang your homemade garland to adorn a window. >>

Cairo Marriott Hotel & Omar Khayyam Casino
The Great Escape In Cairo!
An unbeatable getaway that we enjoyed like nothing else! By: Caroline Coussa
We were blessed to be invited over the weekend for a getaway at Cairo Marriott Hotel & Omar Khayyam Casino, and I must say it was everything and anything we needed for a chill-axing weekend break! We had a chance to completely escape for a break in Cairo! YES, you read it right, you can have a blissful weekend at the Cairo Marriott Hotel without any urge to get out of the hotel cause they have EVERYTHING you need! All you have to do is wish and you will find it there! To start with, we arrived at the hotel, which is located in the heart of Cairo overlooking the beautiful scenery of the Nile in Zamalek area, making it the perfect destination for our weekend getaways. We were welcomingly taken to our room, which I must say was heavenly comfortable. The balcony was breathtakingly amazing, as the hotel’s twin towers landmarks 20 storeys high and provide magnificent views of the Nile and six acres of palace gardens, what more can we want for our break! We then got ready for our Japanese meal at Torii. Upon our arrival, we were seated at the new Teppanyaki table and we couldn’t wait for our Teppanyaki show to start! We took bites and pieces of unbelievably luscious and fresh sushi and sashimi, we then ate prime fillet, chicken and prawns Teppanyaki with fresh veggies and jasmine rice! I couldn’t believe food could taste this fresh and tasty! The show was beyond entertaining, the food was mouthwatering, and the service was exquisite! We took our dessert from The Marriott Bakery, and of course, it is like no other bakery in Cairo!
We then took a walk and meandered the gardens while letting the delights of this luxury 5-star hotel surround us with all its splendor. At the Garden Promenade Café, we couldn’t resist the amazing weather so walked through it till we setteled at Egyptian Nights, it was all we needed to finish our day: flavored tea and shisha, while being pampered with everyone’s service and smiles. We went up to our exquisite room, sat at the balcony, and grabbed the beauty of Cairo’s scenery before we went to bed in our heavenly room. We woke up early, keen to start our day! We had breakfast at Omar’s Café open buffet! The buffet included everything I could daydream of for a diet off day! The fresh bakery, the bread variety, the mini croissants, and donuts, selection of cheese, egg and beans corner, honey and homemade jams, and oh my God the fresh juices and tea section made it a wish for meal! The buffet included couscous and feteer as well! We happily ate to the fullest and went up to our room to dress for our tanning time! We then unwound on the pool, one of the largest pools in the city and we tanned like fried potatoes! We enjoyed the sun and service! They was nothing refreshing more than the ice cold orange granita we ordered from Waves Snack Bar. We visited the Splash Health Club for a cooling fitness session, it has cardiovascular equipment, free weights, running machines, rowing machines, steppers, and stationary bikes and it is open 24 hours daily. We enjoyed our fitness trip! By 6pm, we were completely tanned and famished! We went up to the room, had a quick shower and dressed for our second meal, for I must say, we were starving by the time we got there! We headed to Roy’s Country Kitchen, one of Cairo’s must try restaurants! They welcomed us with flavored butter, apple and pepper butter, it was the first time for us to taste in butter more than fat! Amazing! Then with sparkling water and fresh juice, we ordered our hot stone fillet and prawns, and that was the best part of having our meal served hot, done in front of us, and presented with 4 different sauces, fresh shredded vegetables and hot French fries, it was one of the best meals I have ever tasted, it is a must try dish that you don’t want to miss at the Cairo Marriott Hotel. Afterwards came the sweety part! Our desserts! We enjoyed apple strudel with cookies topped with vanilla ice cream, YUMMY! Also we tried the berries cheese cake and flavored tea! It was SUPERB! It was the perfect way to end our cheat meal! Have I mentioned Roy’s Country Kitchen’s salad bar! It is heaven served on a plate! Feeling content and full, we left thanking everyone for their courtesy and of course food! We then packed and were ready to leave, but not before we sat for a relaxing sunset at the balcony… wWe checked out smoothly, went out the gate of Marriott with a promise of visiting them again so soon!
You really don’t want to miss a weekend at the Cairo Marriott Hotel & Omar Khayyam Casino, to enjoy all that Cairo has to offer!
Dr. Richard Tholen Plastic Surgery
Q1: Can scars be permanently removed by laser? Doctor’s answer: There’s no such thing. Lasers can be used to excise, resurface, or lighten scars, but scars are permanent, and no surgeon or technique presently in existence can permanently remove or eliminate scars. Of course, a bad scar can be excised and replaced by a (possibly) better one, or one with improved orientation or appearance.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Q2: Is it necessary to have a cheat day during diet? Doctor’s answer: While it is not necessary, occasionally allowing yourself to have controlled portions of foods that you are not eating can be helpful. However, the best diet is to change your lifestyle because most diets tend to fail after you go back to your old habits. Eat a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, lean protein and healthy fats to lose weight and keep it off. Exercise regularly. Talk to a nutritionist.
Dr. L. Kevin Chapman Clinical Psychology
Q3: What is Avoidant Personality Disorder? Doctor’s answer: Avoidant Personality Disorder (APD) is a persistent pattern of acute discomfort in social interaction that generalizes to most social situations. Research suggests that individuals with APD have more of a general embarrassment response in social situations as opposed to more fear during social situations with specific social phobia (like speaking). However, APD and generalized social phobia are usually diagnosed together.

e have all turned on the A/C a couple of weeks ago… no point waiting for summer. Don’t get me wrong; it makes perfect sense. Heat is uncomfortable and could even become dangerous, when unprepared for it.
Fortunately, the body is well equipped (yes, it has its own cooling device and it does not hum quite as loud as your living room A/C). Indeed, it disperses heat through four main mechanisms. First, by conduction: As physics instructs us, heat is transferred from one solid object (you) to another (another person or object). The transfer is always from the warmer object to the cooler object. Second, by radiation: That is the loss of heat in the form of infrared rays. This is how IR cameras can detect us. Third, by convection: Namely the heat transfer from the body to the surrounding air. Air temperature must be cooler than skin temperature in order for this to occur. Wind does a good job at doing this. Fourth, by evaporation: Generally through sweat (yes, it is useful). Sweating during exercise is very important and a great benefit to body temperature regulation, provided the sweat can evaporate easily. Consequently, do not prevent it from happening (using anti-perspiration cosmetics or tight and nonbreathing fabric. Did you know that the average person has between 2-4 million sweat glands throughout the surface of our bodies?

a few more glasses of water. I cannot stress this enough: do NOT have cold beverages. They may seem more attractive but could potentially cause a thermal shock! Also, nothing hydrates like water. Drink smart. You should replenish your electrolyte and salt intake while exercising. Some drinks are designed for it but I only recommend them if you are performing long-term exercise (90-plus minutes). Stay informed. Follow weather forecasts. If there’s a heat advisory, for instance, it may mean high ozone and air pollution and these pollutants can damage your lungs. Keep others informed. Tell people where you plan to go, for how long and how to reach you. Should you feel dizzy or need help, an emergency contact must be able to locate you and assist you as fast as possible. Don’t let this happen. Listen to your body. Stop immediately if you’re feeling dizzy, faint or nauseous. Postpone when not feeling well. Don’t take it as an excuse for laziness. There are a lot of cool activities to try during summer. Any water based sport, for example, such as water-aerobics, swimming or surfing. Indoor classes may offer a large variety of options as well.
This being said, even the body has its limits. For one thing, it takes time to adjust. Indeed, if the body isn’t accustomed to warm weather exercises, it takes approximately 10-14 days of exercise in those conditions in order to fully acclimate. Be patient and progressive.
Take the following advice seriously: • Don’t expect peak performance: Your heart works harder at higher temperatures for the same level of activity. • Clothing should be loose and absorbent (large cotton, ideally), light in color to reflect heat (that would be white). • Protect yourself from the sun. Wear sunglasses, a cap and sunscreen (not sun oil or suntan products). • Prefer exercising in the early morning or late evening. Definitively avoid the 10 am – 3 pm interval, which is the hottest. • Drink plenty. Before you go out, drink a glass or two of water. Carry a bottle of water or even a hydration pack such as the camel back. Take a drink every 15 minutes, even when you’re not thirsty. When you’re done with your workout, have
Summer does not wait for you to be prepared or take a break when you are tired of it. But you can make sure to be ready when it comes and capable to stand it all the way. No, I did not mean increasing the fan speed…

Why Eat This? Grapes… The colorful circles of health!
• 1 cup of grapes contains average of 62 calories, they are low in saturated fat, no cholesterol, very low in sodium and very high in manganese. • Grapes contain Vitamin K, which helps blood clot properly and is used to help calcium build bones. Also grapes contain Vitamin C, which plays a primary role in cardiovascular health and immunity. • Grapes increase the nitric oxide levels in the blood, which prevents blood clots thereby reducing the chances of heart attacks. In addition, the antioxidant present in grapes prevents the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, which blocks the blood vessels. • Ripe grape juice is an important home remedy for curing migraine. Take it early in the morning, without mixing additional water. • Grapes are very effective in overcoming

constipation. They are considered as a laxative food, as they contain organic acid, sugar and cellulose. They play an important role in indigestion. • Grapes reduce the acidity of the uric acid and helps in the elimination of the acid from the system, thereby reducing the work pressure of kidneys. • Purple colored Concord grape juice helps in preventing breast cancer. • Darker skinned grapes are significantly more valuable in their content of resveratrol; a natural anti-pathogenic compound found on the skin of dark skinned grapes with a reddish pigment. In grapes, those that are deeply purple or black in color contain the highest concentration of resveratrol and thus, darker colored grapes are your top choices for health preservation.

The purple antioxidant bomb! • Eggplant contains a potent antioxidant that protects cell membranes from damage. It protects the lipids or fats of our brain cell membranes. • Eggplant contains certain phytochemicals that help reduce blood cholesterol and improve blood flow. • Eggplant is an excellent source of dietary fiber. It’s a very good source of vitamins B1, B6, folate and potassium. It’s a good source of copper, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, niacin, and folic acid. • Eggplant cell membranes are almost entirely composed of lipids and are responsible for protecting the cell from free radicals, letting nutrients in 74 |

and wastes out. Lipid peroxidation is the process whereby free radicals damage cells by stealing electrons from the lipids in cell membranes. • Mayo Clinic and American Diabetes Association recommend an eggplant based diet as a choice for management of type 2 diabetes. The rationale for this suggestion is the high fiber and low soluble carbohydrate content of eggplant. • A study at the Department of Nutritional Science in Japan showed that nasunin, the antioxidant from eggplant peels, is an angiogenesis inhibitor, and might be useful to prevent angiogenesis-related diseases and cancer.
Do you suffer from excessive sweating?
Fix with Food
Avoiding certain foods and eating the right ones can significantly help control excessive sweating. Foods to avoid include spicy dishes, garlic, onions, processed and high-sugar foods, and foods with a high concentration of hydrogenated oil. These foods stimulate your sweat glands, causing excessive perspiration. Following a healthy diet filled with fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, and moderate amounts of lean meat, can instead help you as these foods make your body produce less sweat.

The SPF Diet
Research suggests that some foods can intensify your body’s sun defenses. The meal plan below, created by Alyse Levine, R.D., of L.A., may help ward off UV damage and help lower your risk for skin cancer. (But, yes, you’ll still need sunscreen.) Breakfast
Recipes that save your skin Garden Veggie Omelet: 1 whole egg and 1 egg white with 1/2 cup mix of tomatoes, green bell peppers, onions and mushrooms; 1 slice lowfat cheese; 1/4 cup salsa Yogurt: Parfait 1 cup fruit salad (sliced guava, watermelon and apricots), 1 cup nonfat plain yogurt, 2 tbsp lowfat granola Smoothie: 1 cup each watermelon, nonfat plain yogurt and strawberries; 1/2 banana; 1 tbsp honey; 1/2 cup crushed ice Why they may protect? The antioxidant lycopene, the red pigment found in some fruit and veggies, does more than add pizzazz to your plate. Research from Newcastle University in England shows that people who ate about 1/4 cup of tomato paste every day suffered from fewer sunburns and increased their skin’s natural sun protection by one third. Why? Lycopene soaks up free radicals and helps prevent DNA damage.
Snack
Recipes that save your skin Tea and crackers: 2 high-fiber crackers topped with a smear of almond butter; 225g green, white or black tea Nonfat latte: 30g of espresso with steamed skim milk, sprinkled with cinnamon and 2 shakes of cocoa Trail mix medley: 15g dark-chocolate chips, 2 tbsp mixed nuts Why they may protect? These treats have flavonols, antioxidants with anticancer perks. Research suggests that downing a cup or more of tea a day may lower risk for squamous cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer, by 30 percent; drinking 2 to 5 cups of coffee a day may lower risk for nonmelanomas by up to 17 percent. And cocoa can make skin up to 25 percent less sun-sensitive.

Lunch
Recipes that save your skin Chicken wrap: High-fiber tortilla; 115g baked rosemary chicken; greens; mustard Tuna salad: 85g water-packed tuna, 1/4 cup each diced green beans and tomatoes; 1 hard-boiled egg; 2 tsp vinaigrette Salmon medley: 115g grilled wild salmon, coated with pistachios; 1 cup spinach, 1/4 cup each carrots and cucumbers; 1/2 cup wild rice Why they may protect? A Mediterranean diet that includes fish packed with inflammationfighting omega-3 fatty acids—as well as citrus, fresh herbs and veggies rife with polyphenols—may slash your melanoma risk in half, the International Journal of Epidemiology reports. These compounds scour the body for potentially cancerous cells and help reverse some DNA defects early on.
Dinner
Recipes that save your skin Seafood salad: 1 cup mixed greens, 115g grilled halibut, 1/4 cup orange slices, 1 tbsp chopped almonds or walnuts Beef/Steak plate: 115g grilled loin; 1 roasted sweet potato sprinkled with 2 tsp olive oil; 1/2 cup steamed spinach Turkey burger: 115g turkey patty; 1 cup mixed greens, 30g feta cheese mixed with 1/4 cup each cucumbers and tomatoes Why they may protect? Turn over a new leaf: People with a history of skin cancer who ate one serving of leafy greens (like spinach and kale) a day lowered their risk of developing subsequent tumors by more than 50 percent, the International Journal of Cancer finds. Dark greens are loaded with antioxidants that seem to scavenge and destroy free radicals.

10 T hings You Don’t KnowAbout Attraction
T
here are some surprising and kinda crazy factors that come into play when choosing a mate. Like his belly button and the color of your clothing. Intrigued? Read on...

| June 2013
1. Your Nose Should Be Part of Foreplay The blend of lavender and pumpkin turns guys on. But, you don’t have to bake a pie and douse yourself in lavender oil. You can create the combination by lighting two candles or spraying these scents on your neck. Oh, and tell your guy to spritz on a cologne with hints of cucumbers or black licorice, since those smells were found to arouse women.
2. Guys Find Women in This Color More Desirable A chick in red is more likely to be asked on a date and have more money spent on her. It’s because men are influenced by cultural symbols - like Valentine’s Day - that associate the color with romance, and primal instincts that link the color with sex. Maybe that’s why the butts of some animals turn red when they are ready to mate.
3. Cocktail Goggles Are for Real When we’re drunk, guys look cuter because we don’t notice the asymmetry of their face. The biological explanation: A symmetric guy is less likely to have genetic defects and makes a better mate.
4. Men Do This When They’re into Someone A man will subconsciously position his belly button toward the woman in the room he is most attracted to even if he’s speaking with someone else.
5. It’s All About Timing One week you might be craving that guy at the gym, but the next week you have the hots for the slender guy. This could be because ovulating women prefer men with masculine features, who would make the strongest, healthiest children. Meanwhile, menstruating women want men with softer, more feminine looks who seem kinder and more cooperative.
ble bridge. The study found that men who crossed the unstable bridge were more likely to ask out the same woman afterward than those men who crossed a steady bridge. It’s because conditions of high stimulation heighten sexual attraction.
7. Size (of His Gut) Matters You can tell a lot about a guy’s sex drive and fertility. Men with broad shoulders and a solid chest have a lesser health risk, making them better mates. Meanwhile, guys with a gut have lower levels of testosterone. Low testosterone leads to a lower sex drive and lower fertility.
8. A Sign It Could Be Long-Term Love If you and your guy’s mom look alike, there’s a good chance it’ll work out between you two. Guys are more likely to pair up with women whose bone structure is similar to their own mothers. It’s called “sexual imprinting.”
9. The 5/15 Rule If a dude touches you 5 times in 15 minutes, you are totally in. A man will find excuses to put his hands on you to see how you respond. He might touch your arm, tuck a piece of hair behind your ear, or play with your necklace. If you tighten up and freeze, he’ll know to back off.
10. This Move Means He’s Smitten When a guy mirrors your moves, he’s subconsciously telling you he’s interested in you. Sitting the same way as you, doing the same hand motions, and leaning his head in the same direction are all subtle cues that he’s attracted.
“
6. Stress Equals Sexual Attraction
A guy in a high-anxiety or stressful situation is more likely to take a chance on you. Researchers set out to see how adrenaline and risk played into attraction by putting a woman on both a shaky and sta-

Mother & Child
Toddler´s Temper Tantrum
S
creaming, crying, kicking, throwing things, we recognize a tantrum when we see one. But did you know that one of the best opportunities for you and your child to learn effective parenting and anger management strategies is when your child gets angry or has a temper tantrum? If you can manage your reaction to temper tantrums, well, you can manage many other parenting situations. So let’s take a look at what causes tantrums, and what we can do about them.
What is a temper tantrum? A temper tantrum is a child’s normal response to a frustrating situation. It seems like your child throws a tantrum just to push your buttons; but in reality, temper tantrums are unintentional and unplanned. Children don’t throw fits to get your attention; they simply feel frustrated and out of control. Everyone has a tantrum once in awhile, but tantrums are most common in children between the ages of one and four years. Studies shows that tantrums occur for about 80% of children in this age group but some children are more likely than others to have temper tantrums. Tantrum Triggers! • Frustration, often due to limited language, or lacking the skills to complete tasks, for example getting stuck with a jumper half-way on, or a piece of puzzle that won’t fit. • Being hungry or tired. 82 |
| June 2013
• Wanting things they can’t have, whether it’s sweets at the checkout counter in the supermarket, one more video, or a friend’s toy. • Wanting independence: to walk, not ride in the buggy, to choose her/his own clothes, or to brush her/his own teeth. • Over-stimulation: common during exciting events like parties or Christmas. • Attention seeking: if previous tantrums got lots of attention, this can become a pattern as kids grow. • Emotional overload: when trying to cope with the world and the many new experiences a toddler has every day just feels like too much. • Feeling out of control: when living in stressful environments. Children learn by watching their parents and it’s important to set a good example by handling your own frustrations appropriately.
10 Tips To Handle A Tantrum Parents can learn how to nurture and discipline effectively by following these steps: 1. Learn to differentiate between the person and the behavior. When parents discipline out of anger or with expectations that are inappropriate for the age of their child, they often make mistakes in the way they react. First of all, it’s important not to judge the person, but the behavior. Ex.: “It makes me really angry when you hit your sister and I will not tolerate that kind of behavior.” Keep the message simple and only focus on the current situation. Avoid labeling, criticizing or generalizing by saying: “How many times have I told you not to hit your sister, you make me so angry, I really don’t know what to do with you.” 2. Distract or redirect the child. When a child is misbehaving, a calm and asserted parent can sometimes re-direct the child’s behavior. Ex.: “Here’s a bowl of warm water. Let’s put it outside where you can splash all you want.” Aim for some happy, relaxed times every day – reading a story, visiting the park, playing a game. 3. Be prompt and brief with discipline. One technique you can use is to remove your small child from the room immediately and isolate him or her for two to five minutes. This also gives you time to get in control of your emotions. Be firm and consistent in enforcing rules, especially with older, school age children. Ex.: “I’m putting you in your room for a ‘time out’ until you calm down and are ready to talk again.” Or “I want you to go to your room now and stay there until you are ready to come out and use words to ask for what you want” 4. Try to discover the reason for your child’s anger or temper tantrum. What does he or she want and not getting? The reasons for children having temper tantrums vary. Let the child know the behavior is unacceptable. Trying to stop the tantrum by giving in to the demand may be tempting, but parents should stick with the limit that was set— no matter how intense the tantrum. Giving in to tantrums may teach children how to use tantrums for manipulation, causing the behavior to continue in the long term. So instead talk calmly. Ex.: “Now that we’re out of the store and we’ve both had a chance to calm down, let’s talk. I think you were mad at me that I said no to buying the candy you wanted, it is OK for you to be angry at me, but kicking, screaming and yelling that you want candy won’t work. It won’t get me to buy you the candy.” 5. Avoid shaming your child about being an-
gry. Children in healthy families are allowed to express all their feelings, whether these are pleasant or unpleasant. They are not criticized or punished for expressing feelings appropriately, including anger. If there is a situation in which the child seems unwilling to relieve his or her distress , help them by putting word to situation. Ex.: “You look and sound angry right now. I’d feel angry too if someone messed up my coloring like she messed up yours.” 6. Teach children about intensity levels of anger. By using different words to describe the intensity of angry feelings (e.g., annoyed, aggravated, irritated, frustrated, angry, furious, enraged), children as young as 2 1/2 can learn to understand that anger is a complex emotion with different levels of energy. Ex: “I was annoyed when I had a hot meal ready and all of you were late for dinner.” “That man was so angry -- I think he was enraged after someone bumped into his car and went away.” 7. Set clear limits and high expectations for anger management, appropriate for your child’s age, abilities, and temperament. As parents, we will be angry all the time if we have too high or unrealistic expectations to our child regardless of age. Ex.: “While I want you to know it’s OK to feel angry, it’s not OK to hit others!” “I expect you to help with chores, control your anger without hitting, biting or spitting. I expect you to be honest and thoughtful of others, ask for what you want, and treat others as you would like to be treated.” 8. Notice, compliment and reward appropriate behavior. Teaching your child to do the right things is better than constantly punishing bad behavior. Children who get a steady diet of attention only for bad behavior tend to repeat those behaviors because they learn that is the best way to get our attention. Ex.: “I really liked the way you asked Grandpa to play ball with you.” “Thanks, for tidying up you room and putting all your toys in their boxes, that was very helpful.”

It is an ideal interval to step outside, keep all your inner worries and go out and fulfill individuals around you. You will be impressed by your own effective capabilities. It is a fantastic 30 days to mix with everyone and start new connections. It is also an amazing interval for entrepreneurs who are willing to present new and impressive techniques to entice clients. Gemini in a Nutshell Geminis are brimming with energy and vitality. They are clever with words. They are intelligent and very adaptable to every situation and every person. Geminis are curious and always want to know what’s going on in the world around them. They are not one to sit back and watch the world go by, they want to be involved. This can sometimes make Geminis nosy; they do not mind their own business. They are the ultimate social butterfly. Geminis are superficial; they will form opinions on matter without diving into them and exploring them fully. Routine and boredom are Gemini’s biggest fears. Gemini in Love The Gemini as a lover can be counted on to give you lots of fun. They are enthusiastic, fun-loving, and have a sharp intellect. The introductory chit-chat is just as important as the actual contact for this sign, and when it comes to wit, this sign holds nothing back. Flirtatious and curious, they will spend time with a lot of different lovers until they find one that can match their intellect and energy level. The Gemini needs to experience excitement, versatility, and stimulation to feel fully satisfied. Once the perfect match is found, though, they can settle into a lifestyle suitable for both for the long term. Gemini and Business Geminis tend to disperse their energy on different tasks and not just focus on one thing thus leaving a trail of unfinished projects in their wake. If they were to focus their energy in one place, their cleverness and intelligence would allow them to complete their project with success and creativity. Gemini makes an excellent manager; they can motivate a team with their enthusiasm and vitality. They also make excellent salespeople because they can persuade and manipulate very well. Gemini and Friendship Geminis make very interesting and exciting friends. If you need any advice, Gemini is the one to ask. They are masters of communication and they can help you get what you need by helping you with persuasion and enthusiasm, and they give good advice too. They are very generous with their friends; they will spend lots of time with you and share everything with you. Even though Gemini is a social butterfly, they always need time for themselves and that should be respected. 92 |

Want “sun kissed skin” all year long? Here are the facts about tanning and sun beds: Sun tanning or simply tanning is the process whereby skin color is darkened. The process is most often a result of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or from artificial sources, such as a tanning bed. Sunlight has a positive influence on our mood, gives us a boost of energy and a healthy appearance. It’s an important factor that influences our happiness and self-confidence. Moreover, the sun generates vitamin D, which protects us against bone and muscle problems. There are even strong indications that sunlight and vitamin D are protective against various forms of cancer. Scientists dismissed the myth that solariums/tanning beds are bad for your skin.To tan in a sun bed is the same as tanning in the natural sun. However, you should remember to always tan according to your individual skin type and at all times look out for the warning signals (allergic reactions or burns). Rule of thumb is to avoid over-tanning in both the sun and sun beds. At Kriss, we follow a very strict procedure before a client uses our Alisun tanning bed. By an extensive questionnaire we determine your skin type, give you a tanning plan which consists of 8 sessions that can be covered in 10 days. We always inform our clients that over-tanning is never good for their skin. We believe in sensible tanning, that’s why we specifically chose the Alisun sun bed. Alisun was one of the first companies to initiate the “Sensible Tanning Association.” The main purpose of this foundation is to achieve explicit regulations for healthy and responsible tanning. Before tanning, make sure you use a pre-tanner to help you get the result you want. After tanning sessions you must use a moisturizer to revitalize your skin. Like spending time on the beach, your skin dehydrates so you need to balance that out by using a moisturizer. Experience having sun kissed skin all year long, while maintaining healthy skin for good.
