Always a Fighter… I am living in a world with diminutive compassion, forgiveness, acceptance, tolerance, and love. A world that is getting more congested, complicated, and burdened with winds, that nothing seems to be going right anymore. Though being strong might be the only option left to survive life’s continuous battles, I feel able to persevere through severe misfortunes with a soul of a warrior. Yes, I am a fighter because my own strength outweighs my greatest weakness. I do not surrender to life’s hardships as I got the guts to do what it takes to taste the sweetness of triumph. But above all, I do not lose faith in humanity. As the holy month of Ramadan approaches and showers us with its spirituality, I find it the right time for all people alike to nurture positive qualities, such as forgiveness, acceptance, compassion, and love. We must watch out for our blind spots and bring them to light, to alternate the wrong actions with better norms and lifestyles and to enlighten the crowd with our light, even in the midst of darkness. Instead of losing hope in our beloved country and escaping to another continent, why don’t we work on ourselves and repay the good deed to others to spread positiveness and morals for the welfare of the community. I believe that we are all fighters and that we can all contribute to the society through small acts of love and gratitude, because we should never stop believing in humanity, hope, and GOD.

BY: Ghadir Al agabany Ramadan is a splashing museum of ethnic wear; a wonderful time of the year where people enjoy a fabulous festivity through refreshing their furniture, wardrobe, and even culinary experiences. It is the annual pre-Ramadan splurge, where people invite their friends over for a wonderful Iftar buffet, attend marvellous nights while listening to oud and enjoying hookah, invest in Islamic home accessories and decorations, and distribute time, happiness, and gifts among the unprivileged.
For the past few years, boutiques and multibrand stores started to create a huge buzz around Ramadan’s capsule collections. This was a reaction call to satisfy the growing demand of a new closet for 30 days of major outings. For an oblivious, unknown reason, we tend to go oriental in our selection of outfits during the holy month of Ramadan. I guess it’s related to our inner cultural belonging. Therefore, going conservative yet cool is absolutely comprehendible and doable. It is possible to look HAUTE not HOT. Although the Abayas are hot sellers this month, it’s good to know that Abayas were, are, and will never be out of fashion. Abaya is a full length, sleeveless outer garment that is worn by some Muslim women, and it presents extreme diversification of the Islamic outfit, the country-side rural costume, the home lounge wear, and all the way to the hippies 70s kaftan style. They are all randomly named under Abayas; however, their literate fashion terminology is otherwise more identifiable. Valentino, Roberto Cavalli, Missoni, and DKNY are some of the few global designers that constantly promote diverse cultural trends, including bohemian, Hispanic, African, oriental, and Bedouin. Benjabi’s long maxi skirts, loose sheer pants, trendy cropped culottes, full pleated skirts, kaftans, kimonos, cardigans with special art and craft creations are also found in many Egyptian designers’ collections this June 2015. Go ahead, dress the character of Ramadan; precious praying, glorious goodness, valued habits, healthy cooking, generous giving, family and friends gatherings, and a closet loaded with outfits for this special occasion.

IT’S OFFICIAL: Mark Wright and Michelle Keegan are FINALLY Pronounced Husband and Wife Mark Wright and Michelle Keegan have finally tied the knot in a stunning £1million ceremony. They were officially pronounced husband and wife in one of the biggest celebrity weddings of the year. The dazzling Michelle Keegan kept her groom and guests waiting for 30 minutes before making her wonderful entrance in a classic white car decorated with white ribbons. Legendary Actor Omar El Sharif is Suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease. In an interview with Spanish newspaper El Mundo, Tarek Omar El Sharif revealed that the 83-year-old actor is struggling with memory problems, which forced him to retire from the acting industry. Tarek expressed his concern about his father’s illness for the past three years; explaining that he keeps on confusing movies and constantly asks for his wife, who passed away this year. It is worth mentioning that Omar El Sharif earned his fame for his role in 1962’s Lawrence of Arabia.

Skin • For a broken blusher, mix powder with salty water and fix it with a knife. • Treat pesky pimples, redness, or inflammation with yogurt and honey mask. • Use coconut oil to remove your make-up instead of commercial products full of chemicals. • Mix a paste of baking soda and water to remove tan stains. • Remove a shiny T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) with hand sanitizer. • Soften hard skin by putting your feet in half a cup of Listerine, half a cup of vinegar, and one cup of warm water for 30 minutes.
Eyes • You can easily re-wet your old mascara with salty water. • Place a spoon over your lid when applying the mascara to avoid any smudges. • Use a credit card over your eyes to get the perfect eyeliner. • For a smoky rock 'n' roll eye, heat the tip of a kohl pencil with a lighter and place it on your eyes. Lips • For dry and cracked lips, either use a teabag or mix your lip gloss with some peppermint oil. • If you want to fake fuller lips, apply light pencil in the center of your lips and slightly blend with your finger. • To make your lipstick last all day, place a tissue over your lips and cover your lips with semi transparent powder.
Nails • Revive your nail polish with hot water. • Fix a broken nail with a teabag instead of trimming it. • Put just-painted nails in cold water to dry them fast. Banana and Honey Smoothie Mask Banana prevents split ends and softens the elasticity of your hair. Mixing banana with nourishing elements like egg, honey, milk, and olive oil can nourish your hair with essential nutrients, leaving it strong and healthy. Ingredients: • 1 banana, mashed • 1 egg • 2 tbsp. milk • 3 tbsp. honey • 5 tbsp. olive oil Blend all ingredients mentioned above in a small bowl. Apply the mask to your hair, leave for about 30 minutes, and then wash with a very mild shampoo.
Almond Milk and Coconut Oil Mask The main cause of dry hair is the lack of moisture and nutrients. Essential oils, such as almond and coconut, can stimulate the sebaceous glands in the scalp, and thereby moisturize the hair and give a beautiful glow. Ingredients: • 5 tbsp. almond milk • 2 tbsp. coconut oil • 1 egg white Blend all ingredients in a bowl, distribute evenly among your hair, and brush with a thick comb. Leave overnight and wash off with mild shampoo. Use thrice a week for optimum results.
Avocado and Banana Mask Avocado contains healing nutrients that will deeply moisture and nourish your hair. Banana and avocado together can hence make a flawless home remedy for damaged hair. Ingredients: • 1 banana, mashed • 1 avocado, mashed • 1 tbsp. wheat germ oil • 1 tbsp. yogurt In a blender, combine all ingredients together until smooth. Massage the tasty smoothie on your hair and leave for 15 minutes. Wash your hair well with mild shampoo.
Aloe Vera and Olive Oil Mask Aloe vera contains ingredients that have miraculous effects on hair, skin, and health. Its terrific moisturizing properties can make your hair soft and lustrous. Ingredients: • 4 tbsp. olive oil • 5 tbsp. aloe vera • 1 egg yolk In a bowl, mix all components together. Smear on your hair and leave for 4 hours or overnight. Wash off with mild shampoo and repeat this treatment every few days.
Henna and Lavender Oil Mask Henna promotes hair growth, reduces hair fall, removes dandruffs, and heals scalp glitches. Henna can also be used as a natural coloring element if mixed with other herbs, such as hibiscus, anise, coffee beans, and turmeric. Ingredients: • 100 grams of henna • 1 cup yogurt • 2 tbsp. lavender oil • 1 capsule vitamin E, mashed • ½ cup water In a bowl, mix henna with water, and gradually add yogurt, lavender oil, and vitamin E. Combine all ingredients well and leave aside for one hour. Using plastic gloves, distribute the mask evenly, cover with a towel, and leave for 4 hours or overnight. Wash with shampoo twice and apply conditioner to facilitate its removal.
Daily Hair Care Tips for Damaged Hair 1. Avoid harsh shampoos and chemical hair dyes that can damage your hair. 2. Trim off split ends to prevent them from spreading up the hair strand. 3. Condition your hair regularly to nourish and moisturize your hair and protect it from splitting. 4. Don’t overexpose your hair to sun, as it will dry it out. Apply protective lotions and serums. 5. In your opinion, how can the art of giving become a lifestyle for Egyptians? In other words, how can Egyptians contribute to the welfare of society? I think that every individual ought to contribute by any means necessary; whether financially by helping out charitable organizations and funding youth projects or emotionally by supporting such organizations and even visiting and promoting places that are charitable related. There are endless of activities to do, you just need to make sure that the effort you exert is invested and channeled in the right direction.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and fashion background? My educational background was quite irrelevant to fashion, as I received a Bachelor degree in Political Science with specialization in International Law and a Minor in Arts from The American University in Cairo. But my passion to the fashion world started at a very young age, when I used to attend fashion shows with my mother. How did the fashion garage all started? Starting up Fashion Funds was inevitable; for I am fond of nothing more than hosting and organizing special events and parties. But Fashion Garage idea came up when I hosted a fashion bazaar for our Fashion Garage designers and thankfully it yielded great success and positive feedback, which enthused me to establish a company solely for fashion and life style events’ management. 36 |June 2015
Tell us more about Fashion Garage’s charity part. Basically we donate a percentage of our outcome to trustable charitable organizations. Last year we donated to Ashmoun Hospital in Al Monefeya district for the Children’s department; whilst this year we donated to The Right to Live organization for the intellectually disabled. How to do it: Position your right hand on the rail in front of you and your left hand on the left railing. Turn out to the left side so that the left railing is now in front of your body. Upper-body strength training: This exercise strengthens your quads, glutes, and calves. How to do it: To do tricep dips, stand on the treadmill. Put your hands on the rails behind you. Lean back onto your heels and bend your arms. Push up returning to the start point.

uices and smoothies both play an imperative role in any healthy program as they nourish the body with nutrients. Each, however, has distinctive advantages; if you need a fresh light drink, juicing is the ultimate way to achieve this and if you seek a snack that can keep you full for a couple of hours, smoothies are suitable for this purpose. Here is a short comparison that explains specific benefits of each.

Juicing is a process, which extracts water and nutrients excluding the complex fibers. Lack of fibers can make your digestion process at ease, since the system has no food to break down. In addition, juices can support you with more nutrients than if you eat fruit or vegetables solely. Juice can be an excellent choice for people with sensitive digestive system or illness, and freshly squeezed vegetable juice is proven to be part of healing and detoxification programs as they provide nutrients mandatory for nurturing and restoring body as a cellular level. Headache A common problem that many people face during fasting in Ramadan is headache; usually caused by dehydration, constipation, long exposure to sunlight, lack of sleep, or absence of caffeine and nicotine. Solution: • Load up on fluids; preferably water or non-sugary drinks (high-sugar drinks may increase headaches) from the minute you break your fast until suhoor (predawn meal) time. • Eat high fiber foods like fruits and veggies, especially the dark green leafy ones as well as whole-grains, such as oats, barely, and brown rice, to prevent constipation and maintain a regular bowl movement. Drink plenty of water with all fiber foods. Water is absorbed by fiber, allowing waste products to move freely through the digestive tract, thus preventing toxins and waste from building up. High amounts of fiber without sufficient water intake can lead to constipation. • A good night sleep keeps you happy and healthy. Make sure you get at least 6 to 8 hours of sleep daily. Sleep on time and don’t go past your bedtime hour to prevent disturbance of your biological clock. Studies have shown that sleep deprivation and late-night sleeps can contribute to weight gain. • If you are hooked on caffeine and nicotine you may be suffering from mild migraines during fasting since you are abstaining from both substances. Decrease the amount of caffeine and nicotine at least two to three weeks before fasting.
Weight Gain
Heartburn Stomach acid decreases while fasting; however, the thought of foods and drinks can trigger the brain to produce more acids in the stomach leaving you with heartburn.
Many people gain weight during the Holy Month of Ramadan while in fact it should be a period of detoxing. To avoid weight gain you should limit your bad habits, particularly binge eating.
Solution: • Take your anti-acid medication before your pre-dawn meal. • Eat meals in small quantities but frequently. • Quit smoking. • Decrease caffeine intake. • Avoid oily, deep-fried, or spicy food. • Never sleep right after eating your meal to prevent acid reflux; wait at least 3 hours after a meal to sleep. • Sleep with your head raised on a few pillows.
Solution: • Eat in moderation; break the fast with a low-fat soup to avoid digestion distress. • Don’t binge on carbs, specifically simple carbs; they turn into fat in no time. • Eat a bowl of salad before eating any high carb meal, such as pasta and rice, because fibers will slow down the absorption of simple sugars.
Ramadan Do’s and Don’ts DO:
1. Break your fast with water and some dates; they are a good source of fiber, magnesium, and potassium. Be careful with quantities. 2. Focus on foods like light soups, salads, yogurt, fruits, and vegetables; they will keep you full and hydrated. 3. Eat your suhoor; it’s as crucial as breakfast. 4. Make your suhoor meal rich in fibers, complex carbs, and proteins. 5. Get your proteins in suhoor from milk, yogurt, or eggs.
Don’t: 1. Drink big quantities of juice and high-sugar drinks; even if it says no sugar added. 2. Indulge in dessert and high fat foods. 3. Eat dessert right after your meal. Wait at least two hours. 4. Eat food that’s high in salt or canned food because it will make you thirsty during fasting hours. 5. Forget to control portion size. Make sure to eat in moderation.

ith Ramadan adorning us with its presence, one cannot deny the gastronomic culinary experience that keeps on exciting us throughout the holy month. Here is a traditional meal to try out for Iftar this month.
Egyptian Fattah Yield: 8 servings Total Time: 60 minutes INGREDIENTS: • • • • • • • • • • •
11⁄2 lbs lamb, boneless lean 2 medium onions 7 cups water 1⁄2 cup rice 1⁄4 cup butter/oil optional 2 tbsp. butter 10 garlic cloves, finely minced 1⁄4 cup vinegar 1 cup tomato puree 2 slices bread, roasted or fried Salt and pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS: • Cut lamb into 1-inch cubes and put with 6 cups water into a stockpot. Add onions, salt, and pepper, and bring to boil slowly for 95 minutes or until meat is tender. Meanwhile, add rice, water, butter, and salt in a pot and boil. Cover and turn the heat low. Let rice simmer for 15-20 minutes until done. With a slotted spoon, get meat out of the broth and drain. • In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of butter, fry drained meat for few minutes, then set aside. • Add 1/4 cup ghee to the skillet and let melt at medium heat, then fry half the garlic. Remove skillet from stove; add vinegar followed by the second half of the garlic. When colored, add tomato puree and 1 tablespoon of vinegar. • Put one slice of roasted/fried bread into a large pot. Top with half of the sautéed garlic and half of the rice. Add some broth, and then top with second slice of bread and remaining rice. Top with tomato sauce, fried meat cubes, and remaining garlic. Pour remaining broth on top and garnish with parsley.
Egyptian Cream of Artichokes Soup {Shorbet Kharshoof}
Yield: 6 bowls Total Time: 45 minutes INGREDIENTS: • 1 tbsp. butter or olive oil • 1 medium onion, chopped • 1 lb (45o grams) artichoke hearts, frozen or fresh • 2 sprigs of thyme • 2 bay (laurel) leaves • 3 cups chicken broth • 1 cup milk Chinese Toffee • Salt and pepper to taste Banana • Optional: 1/4 cup cream or fat free + fried leeks and mini artichoke hearts
DIRECTIONS:
• In a large saucepan, melt the butter or the olive oil over medium heat. Add onions and stir well until softened. Add the artichokes, thyme, bay leaves, broth, and milk. Cover the saucepan, bring to boil, and then lower the heat. Cover the pan and simmer for 30 minutes or until the artichokes are tender. Let the soup cool then remove the bay leaves and thyme. Puree the soup with an immersion blender. You may add cream and reheat the soup without boiling. Season the soup with salt and pepper. • The Garnish: Slice leeks and artichoke hearts into thin julienne strips. In a small pan, heat 2 tablespoons of oil over medium-high heat. Fry the strips in batches. Remove from oil and place on a paper towel to drain. Season with salt immediately.

Expecting identical behavior and learning abilities is among the most common parenting mistakes. Though they do share similarities, they also have various differences. Identical twins have dissimilar personalities, and you must learn to accept each as a one-of-a-kind. For instance, one child may develop learning and speaking skills faster than the other. It is critical not to compare them with one another, instead make them feel treasured and supported.
