It Is Time to Rise‌
A series of unfortunate events and deaths have conquered my world during the past few months, leaving me drained mentally, emotionally, and a little bit spiritually. Why are the people that matter to us the most are being taken away? Thinking deeply and thoroughly about this question made me realize that my analysis was absolutely shallow. Most people feel inner emptiness; a feeling of being clueless for not having a strong purpose in their life, which sometimes lead to death of emotions, spiritual life, or way of thinking. And instead of digging deep to seek a profound analysis of this feeling of emptiness or death, many people tend to fill it with food, drugs, alcohol, relationships, new luxurious goods and services, children, or even computer games. This fervent feeling of hollowness does not come from a lack of something external, but the lack of awareness of the love that is the energy we live in and the lack of having different purposes to fulfill. No matter how life tries to break you down never look down in the dumps and give up, because life on earth is a test and you either win or lose yourself. When you are willing to stop abandoning yourself and your dead feelings and instead open up and learn to love yourself, you will shower yourself with positive energy, whole-hearted attitude, and fresh soul. Instead of always trying to get love and attention, conquering your thoughts with pessimistic and defeating opinions, or turning to other substitutes of different addictions, you must learn to share your love with others, distribute positive ideas among others, and apply a hopeful and pragmatic approach to your daily life. In the end, death is not merely physical. We can be physically alive but mentally dead at the same time. So, are you planning to waist your time on earth surrendering to negative emotions? I believe it is time to rise.

COCO CHANEL: Chance Doesn’t Just Happen. You Make It Happen. It begins with a flutter in the air. A strange sensation - unpredictable and fleeting. As soon as you feel it, everything changes. Your heart rate picks up. A smile forms on your lips. Your feet start to dance, as if they were taking flight. Chance is a whirlwind. A moment to be seized. To hold in your arms. But chance at CHANEL isn’t just serendipity. The six letters of the word have a special resonance here. Surely because the two names differ only by a consonant, creating a phonetic affinity that gives the impression they belong to the same family. Mademoiselle Chanel often said that chance only comes to those who know how to recognize it, carried by a gust of optimism. Celebrating 12 years with CHANEL, the CHANCE fragrance is a joyous olfactory score that has been a fountain of inspiration for the Brand’s Fragrance Laboratory. Its unexpected accord influenced the creation of two other interpretations. 18 | August 2015

Kylie posted the Instagram photo of her cornrows with the caption: “I woke up like disss.” Amandla responded quickly, saying “@novemberskyys when u appropriate black features and culture but fail to use your position of power to help black Americans by directing attention towards your wigs instead of police brutality or racism #whitegirlsdoitbetter.” Kylie replied to Amandla’s comment, “@amandlastenberg Mad if I don’t, Mad if I do. Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert Shocking Split Blake Shelton, 39, and Miranda Lambert’s, 31, divorce was finalized so quickly without all the legal drama on July 20. Sadly, it was their careers that drove a wedge between them. Blake is devastated over his split from Miranda. “Blake was loyal, devoted, and madly in love with Miranda,” a close friend said. “The road took its toll on the relationship. They began to grow apart recently. This is very tough on Blake. She was the love of his life.” 36 | August 2015
Kourtney Kardashian Fights Haters Slamming Her Relationship With Scott Disick Kourtney Kardashian has been understandably down in the dumps since splitting with long-term partner Scott Disick, 32, but she, 36, isn’t a fan of people criticizing her relationship when they aren’t even involved. The reality star shared an interesting Bible verse on Twitter on July 11 that seemed to be her way of telling the haters to back off during this troubling time. “There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor? James 4:12,” Kourtney tweeted on July 11. Not only is Kourtney having to deal with a devastating breakup, she’s having to deal with it publicly. Kourtney ended things with Scott after he was caught canoodling with rumored ex Chloe Bartoli, 25, in Monte Carlo.

The Key to Flawless Foundation
M
Mastering a flawless finish to our foundation is something that every woman wants. Choosing the perfect shade and the right hue can be quite tricky and frustrating if not smartly chosen, but that won’t be the case anymore because this article provides you with everything you need to know to get a fabulous, flawless foundation finish.
To pick the right foundation, you must first identify your skin tone. If your veins on your wrists seem green or your skin color undertone is yellow, look for warm foundations, such as tan, beige, or olive. If your veins look more bluish and your skin tone is pinky, opt for cool foundations, including ivory, fair, or porcelain. TIP: The perfect color match is right around your collarbone, so wear a V t-shirt when picking the right foundation. The key to creating an impeccable finish is having a base to your make-up. Spread on a light primer to fill in fine lines and wrinkles, as well as to keep your make-up last long. It is imperative to pick foundation wisely, meaning that luminous, moist, and matte ones may provide too moist or too pale appearance. Instead, go for light, sheer, or invisible foundations. Now the ultimate technique to apply foundation is to blend thin layers into your skin with few concentrations on the nose, mouth area, inner eye,
center of the face, and center of the forehead, while applying minimum foundation near the hairline for a natural finish. TIP: It is better to apply foundation either using your fingers or sponge. After applying light foundation all over your face, use a solid concealer to diminish any blemishes, zits, or dark circles. If you reverse the steps, you will end up rubbing off the concealer. Contour your face with a dark stick of foundation and trace the temples. To minimize large forehead, draw thick lines on the sides. To have a shorter nose, draw a thin line on the two sides of nose bone. To bring out the cheekbones, find your cheekbones with the tip of your finger and then draw a thick line underneath. Draw extra thick lines at the rear of your chin and jaw. Blend and tap over the area of contour color. Finally, using a fluffy brush, apply loose powder all over your face for a smooth, perfect appearence. August 2015 | 39

Ways To Make Your Manicure and Pedicure Last Longer
E
Every girl loves manicure, it’s a sort of spoiling yourself after a long tiring day, but it drives us crazy if the manicure gets cracked the following day, so here are some few tips to have the perfect long lasting glow for your manicure!
40 | August 2015
1. Use a cotton swab to wipe down your nails with white vinegar before applying basecoat to remove any product buildup on your nail beds. 2. Don't soak your nails before painting them; use cuticle oil instead to retain the nail color. 3. Avoid getting any polish on your cuticles, which lifts the paint from the nail and leads to chipping. 4. Use a sticky basecoat to make the polish last longer. 5. Apply two layers of basecoat to the tips of your nails for a better polish. 6. Instead of shaking your polish up and down, roll it between your hands to avoid air bubbles. 7. Don't skip the "free edge" of your nails; run the basecoat, paint, and topcoat around the edge to let your nail sealed. 8. Dry nails with cool air. Dipping fingertips in ice water for a minute aids in drying. Avoid warm air; try to expose your nails to cold air instead. 9. Re-apply a layer of clear topcoat every two to three days to prevent chipping. 10. Wash your hands with mild soap instead of using hand sanitizer. 11. Apply nail oil daily to prevent your nails from drying out and splitting. 12. Hide a gel manicure that has grown out by covering the base of your nails with glitter, creating an ombrè effect. 13. If the tips of your nails have chipped, add super-thin French tip. 14. Wear gloves when doing the dishes to protect your manicure. 15. If you chip or smudge a nail, smooth the polish ridge with a cotton swap dipped in polish remover.

Creative Ways to Decorate Your House with Plants Succulents Mini cacti and succulents form a captivating look. Mix round, pointy, shiny, and matte plants, unifying them with just two types of neutral pots.
Put a Towering Tree on Wheels The large, leathery leaves of a tall fiddle-leaf fig offer a charming look. All you need is a piece of precut bluestone from a landscaping center set on a wheeled caddie.
Steamy Spot with a HumidityHungry Orchid Think of a phalaenopsis orchid; they are fans of light and humidity, so they do well in a sunny bathroom. They come potted in a fast-draining medium (a mix of peat, charcoal, and bark). To trap moisture, set the pot on gravel in a low glass cylinder; as water evaporates, it will be caught by the glass and reabsorbed by the orchid.
The Grandeur of Topiaries Since these topiaries don’t need direct sunlight, they can live in the middle of a room, away from windows. They look amazing and yet you can place them anywhere to decorate your home with joyful greenery.
Ferns Leafy fern can turn a room into a beautiful forest. Ordinary ferns look majestic when placed in beautiful matte pots and groomed a bit; just trim stray fronds and remove anything brown.
Dendrobium and Phalaenopsis Orchids Orchids rid the air of xylene—a pollutant found in many glues and paints—and create a wonderful
44 | August 2015
atmosphere. Orchids also respire and give off oxygen at night, so they’re great for the bedroom or for a patient.
Palms The palm family of plants, also known as Arecaceae or Palmae, are extremely superb. These hardy houseplants are easy to grow and perfect for lifting people’s spirits, and they’re known to be natural air purifiers. Palms specifically target and remove formaldehyde, benzene, and carbon monoxide.
Anthuriums Anthuriums are lovely because of their exotic-looking blooms! Their large, dark leaves suck up ammonia, formaldehyde, toluene, and xylene.
Peace Lilies The peace lily, a.k.a. spathiphyllum, is an ideal plant to have in your home if you love flowers but don’t want to buy bouquets that die after a few days. Spathiphyllum thrives in the shade in temperatures below 55 degrees F, and removes harmful toxins like acetone, ammonia, benzene, ethyl acetate, formaldehyde, methyl alcohol, trichloroethylene, and xylene.
Schefflera Schefflera have glossy, sturdy-looking oval leaves that almost look unreal because of their waxy shine, they’re also known to soak up nasty toxins like benzene, formaldehyde, and toluene so like palms.

You Are as Unique as the Destination You Decide to Travel to
L
BY: FADY HANNA
Let’s face it; travel makes you rich and unique! The more you travel, the richer and more unique you become. Answering the question of “where shall I travel to?” is sometimes hectic and choosing your destination says a lot about you. There are numerous kinds of travel and since people are different, their preferences are also different. However, some destinations are extremely unique when compared to other destinations. The more extraordinary and unique your destination is, the more extraordinary of a person this would technically make you. So, just be unique and don’t go with the sightseeing multitudes! The world has much more to offer than the ordinary stuff.
Our first highlight is Sri Lanka! Who has ever thought of spending their vacation in Sri Lanka? Not many! Well, Sri Lanka is one of the most exotic destinations in the world. Think of a place that has tropical jungles, breathtaking landscapes, exceptionally rich culture, and some nice palms on a sunny sandy beach and you're automatically picturing Sri Lanka in the back of your mind without knowing it. Don't miss climbing Sigiriya rock to immerse yourself into the history and serenity of Sri Lanka. 46 | August 2015
The second highlight is Nepal, which is probably the best the nature of mother earth has to offer us. Trekking the Himalayas, the highest mountain range in the world, has now became much more accessible than before and surprisingly it’s not that expensive and is organized by many companies in Nepal. You just need to do some research to get a good deal and a convenient program. The scenes of the mountain valleys, waterfalls, rivers, and trees will restore peace to your soul. Fly or take the bus to Pokhara; your gateway to the amazing Himalayas.
Last but definitely not least are the Norwegian Fjords, which are simply considered one of the most amazing spots on earth! Fjords are magical natural settings, which are best seen in the Scandinavian country of Norway where steep mountains (some of them are ice-caped), waterfalls, and narrow water valleys form a perfect harmony and a picturesque view. It is recommended to visit the Sognefjord and ride the Flamsbana (Fjords sightseeing train) from Flam or Myrdal train stations.
When choosing your destination, remember that it’s always more challenging, unique, and inspiring to explore places that many people usually don’t choose to travel to. That’s not because they’re not as good but because they’re still a bit underrated and not fully explored. It’s fine to make a trip or two to take some pictures of you pretending to save the Pisa tower from collapsing or pointing at the Eiffel tower as some clichés are totally worth it, but don’t miss places like Sri Lanka, Nepal, or Norway where real travelers choose to go.

That Are Ruining Your Skin Using Dirty Brushes If you think foundation is ruining your skin, it might be your routine and not the product itself. Generally, brushes are very prone to collect oil, dust, dead skin, and greasy hair, hence, when applying it to your face multiple times without washing, it can generate breakouts, irritation, bacteria accumulation, pinkeye, and allergies. If you are too lazy to wash your brush regularly, buy two or three brushes to stretch time between washings.
Over Exfoliating Exfoliation removes dead skin cells that accumulate on the skin surface to revitalize dull and dry skin and revive a youthful and smooth, healthy look. But over exfoliating can lead to adverse effect like redness, irritation, flaking skin, burning sensation, excessive dryness, and tightness. It is crucial to gently massage skin in circular motions with good scrubs twice a week and apply sunscreen post to exfoliation as the skin becomes more susceptible to sun damage.
Pimple Popping If you wake up on your wedding day and find out a pimple on your nose just as Nia Vardalos in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, DO NOT itch or squeeze your pimple. Basically, a pimple is a little sack that holds oil, acne bacteria, and debris. When you puncture the pustule, the bacteria falls can lead to more pimples if landed in other pores. So let the pimple run through its life span!
Coffee Many of us barely function in the morning without a cup of coffee; however, excessive and prolonged use of coffee can trigger skin problems. When consumed in large quantities, coffee acts as a diuretic causing you to urinate more frequently, which can dehydrate your skin.
Sleeping in Makeup Skipping your skin care routine before sleeping may invite clogged pores, bacterial infections, and acne prone skin. Some even claim that your face would age more than two days for every night that you sleep with makeup on. If you are too exhausted to remove your makeup before sleeping, keep facial wipes near your bed to remove residues. 48 | August 2015
Smoking If you spotted the correlation between skin problems and smoking, you would have kicked this habit long time ago. Well, smoking can spark bags and symptoms of unrest under your eyes, even if you had a good night sleep. Also your risk for psoriasis increases the more your smoke cigarettes, especially during childhood or pregnancy. Nicotine in cigarettes can stain teeth and escalate the cost of tooth whitening. Needless to mention that smoking prompts aging skin, scars, blemishes, and yellow fingers.
Avoiding Sunscreen
Be Aware of Your Pillowcase Have you ever woke up in the morning and discovered inexplicable breakouts? Like anything that transfers dirt and oil to your skin, pillows can build-up dirt from hair and frequent use, which clog pores and cause blemishes. Regardless of your pillowcase’s material, make sure to change it very regularly along with your bed sheets.
Hot Showers During winter, we often feel forced to take a hot shower without being aware of the consequences. First, the heat from the shower makes the skin’s oils soften, which can be removed with soap, yet it may lead to dry and itchy skin. Now once you step out of the shower, you may spot some dry patches due to frequent hot showers. If you have no other option but take a hot shower, make it very short, use gentle cleansers, and apply a good moisturizer when you are done.
If you look at a sunburned skin under a microscope, you would find that the cells and blood vessels have been damaged. With repeated sun damage, the skin starts to look unhealthy and wrinkled and increases your risk of cancer. Try to avoid sun from 10 am to 3 pm and make it a habit to apply sunscreen every few hours during the day to protect your skin against the sun’s harmful effects.
Unhealthy Diet Vitamins and minerals are imperative for a youthful and radiant skin. A poor diet, however, can make your skin prone to wrinkles, aging signs, breakouts, and dryness. Lack of copper and folic acid will compromise your skin tone. Lack of vitamin C can speed aging signs and increase blemishes. If you want to maintain a healthy routine, include veggies, fruits, fish, nuts, grains, and grilled meat in your diet. August 2015 | 49
The mind and body work together all the time. The way your mind control thoughts and attitudes affects the way your body controls pain. Negative feelings and emotions, such as grief and resentment, can worsen your pain in countless areas of the body. We seldom correlate our physical pain to emotions, maybe because we are afraid to bring those negative feelings into light. Ever asked yourself, why your upper back pain is persistent even though you changed the pillows and performed few neck-shoulder workouts? Well, the brain is massively interconnected with the rest of the body, and so with this kind of logic we have listed common areas that experience pain and their emotional reasons.
Right Shoulders: Outer world responsibilities and burdens. Gut: Childhood traumas and trapped emotions can affect the digestion and the menstrual cycle.
Left Shoulders: Inner world responsibilities and burdens.
Heart: Abandonment, lack of attention, and insecurity.
Pelvis: Betrayal by someone trusted or by oneself.
Hip and Spine: Lack of emotional and financial support.
Right Leg: Career and financial struggles.
Left Leg: Old emotional and physical pain as well as lack of support.

Back: Self-expression issues due to lack of trust, support, and inability to speak feelings. Chest: Negative emotions, including lack of love, aloneness, humiliation, genetic memory, cruelty, and disappointment. Liver: Feelings of anger, jealousy, resentment, and rage. Spleen: Guilt responsibility center, including self-judgment, unworthy, failing to accept oneself, and not deserving anything good.

Reasons Why Women Should
Love
Weight Training
54 | August 2015
There is a common misconception among women that lifting weight and gaining loads of muscles may obliterate their feminine and delicate appearance. Lifting weights may not necessarily transform you into a Manish look, as a matter of fact; it could be your ultimate solution to perfectly shape your body while building strength and endurance. Here are few reasons why you should start lifting weight… today! GET THE PERFECT SHAPE Weight training can drastically advance your fitness level. If you want to tone up your flabby arms, lessen cellulite around your buttocks and thighs, stretch your skin, and diminish superfluous fats around the belly, a fitness program that incorporates weight training three times a week can do that for you. “Researchers at Tufts University found that when overweight women lifted heavy weights twice a week, they lost an average of 14.6 pounds of fat and gained 1.4 pounds of muscle.”
SPICE UP YOUR WORKOUT Lifting weights can be amusing more than spinning or running on a treadmill. To spice up your workouts, you may add a variety of trainings with weights into your program. For instance, you may add free weights to workouts such as dumbbells, kettlebells, sandbags, and barbell, or you may use weight machines, such as leg press, lateral pull-down, and hack squat. BUILD STRENGTH Weight training can build strength; which is an aspect that many people take for granted. It goes without saying that we all wish to have the ability to lift our children, lift heavy objects, or hold the big grocery packs without feeling exhausted or experiencing shoulder and back pain. When we build strength we also build a proper body posture and some confidence. STRESS RELIEF Any type of exercise can relieve your daily stress caused by endless responsibilities, work demands, unbearable traffic jam, and children’s non-stop nagging. There is a physiological component of stress relief with exercising, where the body releases endorphins in the brain, which positively alters our mood post to workout. BETTER HEALTH Women can benefit from weight training in the long run. They can offset the risk of osteoporosis earlier in life and keep the bones stronger and healthier for many years. Lifting weights also increases
insulin sensitivity and the body’s overall ability to manage blood sugar levels, hence lessens the risk for type II diabetes. REDUCE INJURIES AND ARTHRITIS Weight lifting improves joint stability, builds stronger ligaments and tendons, and improves physical function within people with arthritis. “A study conducted at the University of Wales in Bangor, United Kingdom, found that mildly disabled participants who lifted weights for 12 weeks increased the frequency and intensity at which they could work with less pain and improved range of movement.” QUALITY SLEEP Strength training greatly augments sleep quality and makes you fall asleep faster and deeper. “A study published in the International SportMed Journal suggests that morning resistance training or high intensity training greatly affects the quality of sleep and lengthens the time of sleep the night after training.” HEART HEALTH The American Heart association has proved that pumping iron is a healthy form of exercise for people who have heart disease and it can reduce their heart problems as well. “A study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning found that those who lift weights are less likely to have heart disease risk factors such as a large waist circumference, high triglycerides, elevated blood pressure, and elevated glucose levels.’’

Foods that Reduce Bone Density Protein: Too much protein may lower bone density. Protein builds strong bones, but when you eat an excessive amount of protein, your body produces a chemical called sulfate that can cause calcium to leach out of the bones. Caffeinated Drinks: “In a recent study of 31,527 Swedish women ages 40 to 76, conducted by the Swedish Department of Toxicology’s National Food Administration, researchers found that women who drink 330 milligrams of caffeine or more a day, the equivalent of about four cups of coffee have an increased risk of bone fractures.” Vitamin A: Too much of the retinol form found in vitamin A interferes with vitamin D absorption, which causes bone loss. The retinol form of vitamin A can be found in such animal-source foods as liver, egg yolks, dairy products, and dietary supplements. Sodium: Too much sodium can cause you to excrete calcium in your urine and perspiration. Sodium is found in table salt and many processed foods. Wheat Bran: It reduces the absorption of calcium when eaten at the same time as calcium. Salt: Found in processed meats, fast food, and processed foods, huge amount of salt intake can contribute in ruining your bone density. Soft Drinks: Many soft drinks and certain other carbonated soft drinks contain phosphoric acid, which can increase calcium excretion in your urine leading to reducing your bone density.
Best Foods for Your Bones: Milk: Calcium is the foundation of strong bones. Adults up to age 50 need 1,000 milligrams per day. A cup of yogurt has at least as much calcium as a 2 cups of milk. Sardines: They build bone mass in our bodies and enhance the overall bone density. Greens: Consume adequate vitamin K, found in green. Go for dark leafy greens such as bok choy, Chinese cabbage, and kale. Calcium Supplements: If you don’t get enough calcium, go for calcium supplements. Salmon: Salmon and other types of fatty fish offer bone-boosting nutrients. They contain vitamin D, which aids in calcium absorption when the skin is exposed to sunlight. They’re also high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are healthy for the bones. Nuts and Seeds: They can boost bones’ health. Walnuts and flaxseeds are packed with omega-3 fatty acids. Peanuts and almonds contain potassium, which protects against the loss of calcium in urine. Nuts also contain protein and other nutrients that build strong bones. Beans (legumes): While beans contain calcium, beans contain magnesium, fiber, and other nutrients; they are also high in substances called phytates, which contributes for a better bone health.
Tip: Getting regular exercise, especially weight-bearing and muscle strengthening exercise can enhance your bone density. 58 | August 2015

Crown Jewel Cake Yield: 6-8 servings Total Time: 7 hours To make this cake you will need a 7” round spring-form pan, an 11x17” jelly roll pan, and a tea towel.
Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • •
1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar for sprinkling tea towel 1 cup almond flour 3/4 cup confectioners’ sugar 1/3 cup all purpose flour 3 large eggs 1 egg yolk 3 egg whites 1/4 cup extra fine granulated sugar 2 tbsp. butter, melted 1/2 tbsp. pink/rose gel food coloring or deep pink gel food coloring (do not use liquid food coloring)
Directions: • To make gelatin cubes: Prepare 3 oz. flavored gelatin packages (I used 3 different colors/flavors of Jello brand) as directed on the box. When set, cut into cubes and store in refrigerator for later use. • Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Prepare tea towel with 1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar. Grease jelly roll pan, line with parchment and grease paper. • Using a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment beat the almond flour, 3/4 cup confectioners’ sugar, flour, and eggs until combined, stopping to scrape down the sides of the bowl as necessary. Add the 1 egg yolk and food coloring, then mix again to combine. • In a separate bowl, whip the egg whites with an electric hand mixer. When foamy, gradually add in the granulated sugar until a white, thick meringue forms. Gently fold the meringue into the almond flour mixture. Add the melted butter and carefully fold again, as to not deflate the batter. • Pour mixture into jelly roll pan and bake for 5-8 minutes. Watch it carefully as it cooks quickly and will burn easily. • Remove cake from oven and turn out onto tea towel. Trim edges and cut one long piece of cake big enough to fit around the inside of the 7” spring form pan. You may have to piece together a bit of the crust. • Using your pan as a guide, cut a circle of cake and press it into the bottom of the pan evenly.
Filling: • • • • • •
1 tbsp. powdered gelatin 1 cup pineapple juice 1/4 cup cold water 1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 1 - 1 1/2 cups reserved gelatin cubes (you will have left-over cubes if making a variety of colors)
• Put the pineapple juice in a small sauce pan and sprinkle powdered gelatin over; let it sit for a few minutes until dissolved. Heat gelatin/pineapple juice mixture on the stovetop until melted. Remove from heat and stir in the cold water. Transfer to a small bowl and let stand on counter-top until it cools slightly. Place in refrigerator until mixture has completely cooled (about 5 minutes) but hasn’t set up - it should still be liquid. • In a large bowl, whip the heavy cream and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form. Whisk the gelatin/ pineapple juice mixture into the cream until combined. Drop the gelatin cubes in the cream randomly. Shake the bowl until the gelatin cubes sink into the cream (stirring them in with a spoon can damage the cubes). Pour the mixture into the sponge-lined pan and chill for at least 6 hours or overnight.

Love & Relationships
Waving Wanders of the Relationship World
Irritating Behaviors and Imperfections of the PERFECT MAN!
L
64 | August 2015
BY: LAUREN K. CLARK LOVE… love, love, love! That is, after all, the ultimate goal of being in any committed relationship. Unconditional love, as a matter of fact. Highlighting the wonderful attributes of your partner, while also coming into terms with those minor, annoying habits that come to irritate you from time-to-time. Now, of course, some are tolerable—I suppose. Yet, then, there are those horrendous mannerisms, making you wish you had a magic wand to magically whisk away all of your partner’s bad habits. Well, newsflash, for you ladies... you don’t have that magic wand; and it seems that those annoying habits won’t be going away anytime soon. So, what’s next?
Alright! So, you get out your pen and paper and create your own personal pros and cons checklist. Sitting on your couch or at your desk, tapping your pen, going back and forth in your head, you question if the relationship is even worth the hassle of putting up with all of those annoying nuances. Time has passed, and the list is complete. Now, when you look at the list, do the pros outweigh the cons? Or is it the reverse? Even if the cons do outnumber the pros, are they really as significant as the most important thing in a relationship-the power of love? And in this “semi-analysis” of your partner, do you want a human robot (in all of their perfection), or a real person-“flaws and all?” Maybe it is time for you to take a look in the mirror and re-evaluate your own habits. Are you perfect? And are there annoying habits about yourself that your partner could be irritated by, but avoids calling them out to you out of compassion for your feelings? Most importantly, their lack of criticism on your annoying, behavior patterns, mainly because they truly love you; realizing that your imperfections are part of who you are, and what they love about YOU! Cut it out, Ms.I-NEED-TO-HAVE-THEPERFECT-MAN and concentrate on appreciating the RIGHT MAN! Do I have your attention now? Good! Because if I do, the first thing you need to do is throw that stupid list away! Now! Right now! If you realize that you are madly and passionately in love with your boyfriend, lover, or husband, why are you creating unnecessary problems that really don’t need to exist? Ok, sure. It can be annoying in always having to remind him to put the toilet seat down! His burps and other unpleasant noises make
you cringe. He leaves his clothes on the floor. Cookie crumbs make their way into the bed. Then last, but definitely not least, his mojo has started to work less and less in the bedroom department. Yes, I understand clearly. However, instead of focusing on what is bad, why not make a more positive list of things that truly matter! • Does he tell you how beautiful you are? • When you arrive home from a hectic day at the office, is he the first to ask you how your day was? (Then kiss you, letting you know that everything will be alright.) • Does he cook for you from time to time? • Is his smile the most gorgeous you have ever seen?
there is room for improvement. Relationships are about evolvement and growth. Just think about it, if you didn’t have those irritating habits, what memories would you have that showed how the two of you worked through them? And how your relationship became stronger at the end? Alright, so is it clear now? YOU HAVE A GREAT MAN! Don’t ruin it over petty stuff ! Now if you want to work through it, here are a few real magic wands that may just help!
WAND #1Talk! Talk! Talk! Convey to your partner about what behaviors are annoying to you. In return, be ready for similar criticism. Both sides have their say, but I promise you that it can do wonders!
WAND #2• When you do make love, is he concerned about your feelings and emotions more than his own? • Does he rub your feet, making sure that you are comfortable when you get home? • When the stresses of the day get too much to handle, does he text you or call just to tell you that he loves you?
If eroticism is missing in the bedroom; perhaps it is time for the two of you to see a therapist, more like a sex therapist! Enjoy the fun in re-discovering your sex life!
WANDS #3Make it a daily activity for the two of you to mention a positive thing about each other. It’s a given that the negative is not as monumental as you are making it.
WAND #4• And those special moments, when it is just the two of you (as he looks into your eyes, proclaiming you as the most beautiful woman in the world), do you feel safe with him in his arms? If the answer is YES to all of these questions, then do those annoying behaviors really matter? Of course
Set relationship goals together, designing a plan for what you would like to work on and how to obtain these goals!
Enjoy this journey, ladies! Keeping in mind that the IMPERFECTIONS in your man are what make THE PERFECT UNION! August 2015 | 65
Mother & Child
How to Deal With Your Disrespectful Teen? If your teen started cursing, yelling, arguing, ignoring you, refusing requests, or name-calling, this is when you should interfere to handle the situation properly and set appropriate limits. This certainly requires some patience; you will play crucial roles as a teacher, coach, and limit setter. Here are some rules to instruct them to behave appropriately. 1. Don’t take your teen’s altitude personally. Don’t take what your teen is saying or doing personally, the behavior is all about having the feel of freedom and doing whatever he wants without any restrictions, this behavior is called ‘independency’. As a parent, be clear and direct with your teen. If they start calling bad names for instance, set some limits and try to build a mutual respect. Attempt to deal with your child’s behavior objectively, don’t over react or under react the situation. So basically, when the adolescent doesn’t obey, the parent feels disrespected. Parents need to understand that their teen’s acts of rebelliousness come from the fact that they want to feel independent. 2. Be prepared for some disrespectful behavior during adolescence period and note that this is normal; all you have to do is to plan ahead for this stage on how you are going to deal with this. Note that, you don’t have to attend every fight your child invites you to. If your child has been extremely disrespectful because you didn’t set any limits around their behavior, talk with them once everybody cools down to set some restrictions. 3. Avoid power struggles. Don’t get involved in power struggle or you will mislay. If your kid is swearing in your face, calling you names, or ignoring you, ask him/her to behave differently. It is not a war. Force a consequence for the behavior and then have a follow-up discussion about that behavior. If you didn’t impart your teen to respect you, he/ she would most probably disrespect other people as well. 4. Be a teacher. It’s your job to teach your kids to behave more respectfully and handle their frustration 66 | August 2015
better. Teach them how to behave, encourage them when they get it right, and set boundaries when they get it wrong. Do not lecture or give long speeches, as your teen will simply tune out. 5. Be calm. When your child talks back to you or refuses to do something you have asked for, stay calm; neither threaten nor yell, as these behaviors can trigger negative results. Simply state the behavior and remind your child of the penalties. If your child is out of control, ignore the situation and initiate a conversation later. 6. Be firm. Do not negotiate with your child or go into an argument about the consequences and rules that you are enforcing, or else it will be expected to witness undesired behaviors later on. 7. Be willing to have discussions rather than arguments about adjusting the rules without giving your teen the chance to be rude. Listen to them and be ready for a discussion. 8. Be a role model. Pay special attention to the way you speak to your child and to others. Are you being sarcastic, rude, or mature? Your child will replicate your tone and the way you treat others. If you commit any verbal mistake, admit that to your teen to make a fruitful difference in terms of communication. 9. Help your teen in making right choices within the boundaries that you set. Let them take charge of their personal behaviors, even if it suggests a series of negative circumstances and outcomes. Make sure to give them options in situations that allow them to build their own opinion, and to force your opinion in situations that allow no room for negotiations.
10. Don’t be vulgar with your teen. Explain your worries about the progress of your relationship and your intention to build a pleasant connection and understanding.
11. Use humor. A shared laugh can lighten the tone of a conversation, while a sarcastic or fake tone may ruin everything. Use descriptive praise with your teenager for positive communication. This lets him know that you value his opinions. August 2015 | 67

movie Fast And Furious 7 Let’s all be honest with ourselves. Everyone who watched this movie, cried at some point. The movie is directed by James Wan and starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker (everyone’s gone sweetheart), Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, and Jordana Brewster. The movie finishes the film to honor Paul Walker legacy, where Deckard Shaw seeks revenge against Dominic Toretto and his family for his comatose brother, which puts them all in danger once again. It is highly recommended to watch this movie.
